His forced departure ends a 20year tenure at the network. It includes a months long battle for control of cbs for the shareholders. In a statement, moonves claims there are untrue allegations made against him and he is deeply saddened to leave the company. We have Cnns Brian Stelter with more. Reporter of all the me too cases in the last year, there is not one like this. Les moonves is the first fortune 500 ceo to leave his post amid harassment allegations in the year of me too. It is remarkable turn of events given six weeks ago when the first harassment allegations came out, he vowed to fight on. Back in late july when ronan farr farrows reporting came out, the cbs board stood by moonves. He wasnt suspended for forced he wasnt suspended or forced to step down. Two law firms were hired to investigate. All of this was going on amid a corporate tugofwar with moonves and shareholder of cbs. Now fast forward six weeks. Farrow heard from more women who were concerned that cbs was not taking action. Not holding moonves accountable. Farrow published a new story on the new yorker web site. Within a few hours, moonves was out. The caveat here is that negotiations for him to leave were already under way at that point. It seems clear the new harassment allegations which included allegations of assault, which were more disturbing than the first set of allegations. All of that is a major factor in the sunday night announcement. Moonves is one of the most powerful men in tv. One of the highest paid executives in the media business. This is leaving a lot of aftershocks. There will be developments for days to come. Including about how much moonves will be paid on the way out the door. Normally he would be paid over 100 million if he just been forced out one day. Because of the allegations against him, it is a more complicated and legal conversation. Moonves has admitted to mistakes in his past, but denies abusing his power and appalling allegations of assault of forcible sex that were detailed in the story on sunday. All of this happening at a time of dramatic change in the broadcast business and now cbs moves into a new era without moonves in charge of the company. More to come on this story, but it is a climactic moment in the me too moment. Brian stet stelter brian stelter, cnn, new york. Thank you, brian. Lets go live to washington and bring in politico reporter rachel. What is your sense of the oped and the woodward book on operations in the white house. How do they get this in their Rearview Mirror . It is devastating. There is a reason they are trying to find the writer of the oped. It is not to oust someone from the white house, but continue to do the work to consult with the president and advise him and have him listen. Republicans right now have tried to walk the president back on a number of issues that his gut instinct runs counter to the party. Russia and nato. And to shut the government down weeks before the midterms. And the ability to trust him and walk him back. If he thinks somebody in the room is out to get him and sort of stifle his agenda or has it out for him, which clearly he does, because he doesnt know theauthor. To get that person out of the room and get them to trust him again. And it is fascinating to listen to the bob woodward book excerpts and then the New York Times article. That was not sourced properly enough for him to have used it. He gives the fascinating real world example in the book where he talks about the president with the tweet and pulling all of the dependents out of south korea. And then that would be seen as an act of aggression by the north. I dropped my pen. That could lead to action. That is a real example of the crisis from the behavior of this president. That is right. The oped would not give a lot of specifics, but Bob Woodwards book would. It is a narrative and what we heard all along. Senator bob corker said im not surprised. I have known about this a long tim time. There are groups who are concerned about the white house and the president. Im curious if this affects the mid terms. The economy is doing well. This is totally drowned out by the drama in the white house. We heard great reporting by the New York Times where mulvaney said if it werent for the president , they could keep majority. He seems to be a drag right now. It will be framed with the midterms as obama versus trump. He was speaking out harshly against donald trump and policies and demeanor and decency in the country. Here is what mike pence said to cbs yesterday about all that. I was very disappointed to see president obama break with tradition of former president s and become so political and rollout the same tired arguments that he and liberals have made over the last eight years. Pretty rich for President Trumps Vice President to speak about past political decorum. Breaking tradition . Yes. Lets try to put that aside for a moment. Clearly president obama is personally popular. Are his policies popular . Will it help . He is revered by liberals and progressives and democrats in general across spectrum. He can drive out the Democratic Base which is what they need to take the house right now. It doesnt hurt to bring him out. It helps them. I think it begs a question going forward. What will they do without obama . We dont have a clear 2020 figure. Nancy pelosi has her issues with the moderates not liking her. Who will lead the Democratic Party . They are looking at fall and obama is the best bet to turn out the base. Rachael bade thank you. 45 minutes past the hour.
