This was a targeted attack on the Capital Gazette. He entered the billsi entered building with a shotgun and looked for his victims as he walked through the lower level. Overnight the police searched the suspects home and were learning more about a possible motive. In 2011 the paper ran a story about the suspects guilty plea to criminally harassing an Old High School classmate. He filed two lawsuits over the story. Both suits dismissed. The suspect is in court this morning. The Capital Gazette reporting hes been charged with five counts of first murder. Brian todd has more from annapolis. Reporter the man who opened fire on the Capital Gazette newspaper on thursday afternoon has been identified by multiple atlanta sources to cnn as Jared Warren Ramos in his late 30s. He did have a complaint with the newspaper that he filed a defamation claim against the Capital Gazette back in 2012 but that claim was dismissed. Police say there were social media threats directed at the newspaper of a general nature. Not directed at any particular person they know of at the moment but there were threats via social media directed at the Capital Gazette some as recently as thursday morning. We have dramatic accounts from witnesses and from survivors of the Police Response and of the gunmans movements when he came into the building. According to phil davis, who is an employee of the newspaper who survived this, the gunman came in, shot his way through the glass doors, and came into a small space there in the newsroom and started opening fire. Mr. Davis could hear him reloading as he was hiding under his desk and as were several other people and described it as a terrifying experience. And we are told the Police Response was rapid. Within 60 seconds, no later than 90 seconds from when the shooting started. One witness said she was on lockdown not too far away from the shootk and she saw police running in their civilian clothes pulling their kevlar bulletproof vests on to the building and they were credited with disrupting this attack with five people dead and two people wounded. The shooter were told has not been cooperating with police. Were told by one source they identified him from facial recognition software. At least initially. Dave and christine. Based on President Trump calling the press the enemy of the people. You remember that. And that is what this is in reference to. Mr. President , can you comment on the shooting . Comment on the shooting in annapolis . The annapolis shooting, sir. In annapolis mr. President , why do you talk about the enemies of the people. This one stood out from jim jordan pressing Rod Rosenstein, listen. I dont know why you wont give us what weve asked for. Sir, i hope your colleagues are not under that impression and that is not accurate, sir it is accurate. Weve caught you hiding mr. Chairman can we allow the witness to answer. Mr. Chairman, point of order. We could go to the press conference to hear from him but we came here to hear the witness. Youre statement that im keeping information from you and concealing information. Youre the boss, mr. Rosenstein. That is correct. And my job is to respond to your concerns and we have, sir. Did you threaten staffers on the House Intelligence Committee . Media reports indicate you did . Media reports are mistaken. Sometimes this is what they said, having the nations number one Law Enforcement officer threatened to subpoena your calls and emails is down right chilling. Did you threaten to subpoena calls and emails. No, sir. And there is no way to subpoena phone calls. Im just saying not sure that jim jordan intended that as a laugh line but the crowd found it humorous and he asked about the documents for the email investigation and trump russia and is this about documents or Something Else. It is not about documents or information. It is about discrediting an investigation. And that is what the republicans are engaged in. And it is working. I think it is been very effective. But the actual substance i dont think is relevant to them. The president of the United States just before announcing that he wont meet with he would meet with Vladimir Putin in helsinki between the two leaders, he said russia continues to say they had nothing to do with meddling in our oelection. Where is the dnc server and why didnt james comey examine it and why isnt hillary russia looking at it and so much corruption and they said either mr. Trump has lost touch with essential u. S. Interests or some other explanation for his kowtowing and the president acting as a spokesperson for the kremlin and saying the kremlin said there is no meddling at odds with his intelligence. Why is he doing this. Hes been doing this consistently. And he sees that as a question about his own presidency. So every time that issue comes out he throws out all kind of disjointed stories. He denies there is any kind of meddling and urges everyone to move on. And he could probably solve this much easier and much earlier if he acknowledged what most agree happened and dealt with it so it doesnt happen again in 2018. Our Fred Pleitgen was saying in russia the story line among the anchors or the banter is about how it is russia that helped elect donald trump and russia gets some credit for elected donald trump. John bolt on who is over there in russia and said it is a true act of war, russia meddling in our election but what is the impact of the president saying russia didnt meddle. Does it invite them back into our election and undermine the intel community. It doesnt create any pushback and it is a serious issue. And even if you take President Trump out of the story, no one should want this kind of interference in our electoral process. It is not something that is desirable or healthy. So if the president takes this stand, it hurts every effort to actually deal with the problem and to create pushback against russia to do it again or for other countries to try the same. A tale of two companies in wisconsin, President Trump praising taiwan fox con and taking another swipe at harleydavidson. He helped them break ground on a 10 billion plant yesterday and the manufacturer is promising 13,000 jobs. Wisconsin wooed fox con with a controversial 4 billion in tax breaks and incentives, one of the richest ever. Costing taxpayers about 200,000 per job. At the event, President Trump had words for a nearby company, harleydavidson. Harleydavidson, please build those beautiful motorcycles in the usa, please. Okay. Dont get cute with us. Dont get cute. Trump has threatened higher taxes on harley if it moved production overseas but they need to avoid steep new tariffs from the e. U. And they are retaliation for trump tariffs on foreign metal which he also defended. We put tariffs on steel and aluminum. Those businesses are through the roof. U. S. Steel called me up and are expanding and opening six plants. U. S. Steel reopening two plants. Not six. But it does credit the metal tariffs. However those same tariffs raise costs for lots of other businesses including harleydavidson. And it cost more for them to produce a bike in the United States because of the first tariffs. Number two, the president pulled out of tpp which means they could have had some very favorable tariff treatment in asia if the president stayed in nttp and then the union tariffs and so you have harleydavidson navigating the president s very own trade policy which hurts the company. And the decision today about opting out of the contract, it doesnt really mean where he will end up next season. The only thing it does is eliminate the Houston Rockets from the conversation because the only way they could obtain lebron is through a trade. So even if he does opt out, cavs and lakers still both in play throughout the weekend. It the interesting. The celtics snuck into this conversation which is i think surprising to a lot of people. They would have to trade for him too. So if he opts out today, the celtics would be eliminated from the lebron sweepstakes. Thank you. There is a risk that the president could meet with nato leaders and have this july 16th meeting with president putin in he helsinki and he will be warmer to an adversary than americas long time allies. This is causing concern in europe. What the president is missing and ultimately if he did want some kind of diplomatic breakthrough with russia or a historic moment, it is important that his allies have confidence in the United States. It is important that we all have confidence that our democratic system is working. That actually would help him create some kind of opportunity with russia. Some kind of diplomatic breakthrough. If he doesnt do all of that, he enters in the weakest position possible. You just cant help but wonder why, when the Intelligence Community has universally agreed russia meddled and his secretary of state, john bolton who is there right now called it a true act of war, russian meddling in our election. And i was looking at the editorial page and it got me right in the gut. They left theiditioral page blank in memory of those lost. They did put the paper out though. That is the true message from the Capital Gazette this morning and what they shood for and stand for still. Were going to get this damn this paper out. They said, the Capital Gazette reporting on itself, the day after an assault on journalism. The day after an assault on that paper. That paper is so integral to the community in annapolis. And you could see that in the response so quickly after this event whether it was government leaders or Community Leaders or First Responders, they all know these people and they work with them.
