Now diplomacy and search of the deal on the Pyongyang Nuclear program. Tensions flare in the middle east. Israel and Iran Exchange rocket fire. We have reports this morning from joint base andrews and seoul and jerusalem and tehran and johannesburg. Welcome to early start. Im christine romans. Im dave briggs. Thursday, may 10th. 5 00 p. M. On the korean peninsula. 4 00 a. M. In the east. Three americans released from north korea back on u. S. Soil. The immediamedical plane touchi at joint base andrews in maryland. The three men greeted by President Trump and first lady and the Vice President and second lady. The preparations are being made for u. S. And north korea summit. Here is what the president said. Proudest achievement will be, this is part of it, will be when we denuke that region. Im honored to have helped the three folks. They are great people. You know, i got to speak to them on the plane. These are great people. They have been through a lot. Its a great honor. The true honor will be if we have a victory in getting rid of Nuclear Weapons. Not at all. We very much appreciate that he allowed them to go before the meeting. It was sort of understood that we would be able to get these three terrific people during the meeting and bring them home after the meeting. He was nice in letting them go before the meeting. Frankly, we did not think this was going to happen and it did. You could say were a little bit it was a very important thing to all of us to be able to get these three great people out. Remarkable moment there with those three coming off the plane. This is protocol. They will have a medical evaluation and debriefed by american officials about what they endured. The president mentioning Otto Warmbiers parents which was important. You remember a college student, American University student who suffered irreparable harm under the regime in north korea and came home and died. The president said i must tell you i pay migray respects the parents of Otto Warmbier. The president called this a positive gesture of good will. Asked about how this changes now he negotiates with kim jongun. He said no, not at all. The president did take time to slam the New York Times and slam the media. He said he expects record tell vit Television Ratings for 3 00 a. M. A major win for President Trump and the United States this morning. Meanwhile, a cnn poll shows a big improvement in americans opinion on how the president dealt with north korea. 53 approval up sharply from last november. With the detainees on american soil, what is next with the relationship with the u. S. And snk north korea . Joining us live from seoul is Paula Hancocks. Paula, good morning. Reporter good morning, dave. We have heard from north korea. State run media has knowledacknd these detainees have been released. When secretary of state mike pompeo was asked to release them and he decided that he would. So we have had that acknowledgment from north korea and acknowledging the north korean u. S. Summit. Talking about mike pompeo and the United States in warm terms. We have seen a radical change in north korean state run media when it comes to talking about the United States. We did hear briefly from one of those three american detainees. Kim dong chul who was arrested in 2015. He was the only one found guilty and sentenced to hard labor camp. Found guilty of espionage, charge we will soon find out, whether or not he was involved in. Clearly in the past, these trials have been questioned, shall we say, when it comes to north korea. He said it is like a dream. Were very, very happy. Saying we were treated in many different ways. Pointing out he was working in a hard labor camp and pointing out that when he did become sick, he was treated by the North Koreans. Clearly it will be interesting to hear some more from him and more from the other two who were both accused of hostile acts. No actual specification on their crimes. From the north korean point of view, they wanted to make sure the u. S. Made sure this did not happen again. They didnt repeat these socalled crimes in North Koreans eyes. Clearly, were hearing from north korea. They have released them. Speaking about the u. S. In warm terms. Dave. Thank you, paula. Breaking overnight. Israel retaliating after rocket fire from syria targeted Israeli Soldiers in the Golan Heights. The rockets fired by the iranians. It marks the direct confrontation to date between israel and iran. Lets go to jerusalem and ian lee is tracking the latest developments. What are you hearing, ian . Reporter good morning, christine. It was a frightening night for residents of the Golan Heights as they scrambled to bomb shelters as sirens blared. The nights sky lit up with over 20 rockets from the iranian battery fired toward israel. Israel hitting several sites in syria. We are hearing there were not casualties on the israel side. We have not heard on the syrian side. Only that the Syrian Government saying they intercepted some of the missiles. Some of the sites targeted include that missile launcher. Also Iranian Intelligence sites and logistics headquarters and military base north of damascus weapons depots and observation points and syrian antiaircraft batteries. We heard from the israeli minister of defense liebermann. He said most of iran infrastructure inside syria was hit. He also gave the warning saying that if it will rain in israel, there will be a biblical flood on the other side. We are hearing from israeli officials they contacted the americans and russians before they carried out the strikes to make sure there wasnt any conflict. Russian president Vladimir Putin said he wants to see both sides deescalate. Israelis have said the same thing. As for right now, christine, on the northern part. It is business as usual. Schools are open and people are encouraged to go back to work. After a frightening night. Ian lee in jerusalem. Thank you. What is iran saying about this . We have Frederik Pleitgen live in tee ran. Fred, this is a different tale told by iran. Reporter there usually is in these situations, dave. Strangely, there has been no official reaction from the iranians. All we are hearing is from iran y media that strikes took place in syria. Israel is pointing the finger at iranians that they are still trying to get any official comment from the iranian side. It is not necessarily something we heard. We heard of skirmishes like this in the past couple of months as the situation has escalated. It takes the iranian government a couple hours or days to acknowledge something took place and acknowledge if any Iranian Military casualties were on the ground. Of course, this coming at an absolutely significant time between the u. S. And iran and israel. Right after President Trump pulled out of the nuclear agreement. Iranians railing at the United States. Then also at the same time firing up diplomatic machine as well. A phone call yesterday with the iranian president Hassan Rouhani and the french president Emmanuel Macron. Where iran wanted to save the deal, but time is of the essence and they want the europeans to do more to stay in the nuclear agreement. Dave. Fred pleitgen, thank you. Three american prisoners touching down at joint andrews base in maryland. The president greeting them at the air base. The first lady and Vice President and his wife and mike pompeo joining them. The president praised kim jongun and the regime for releasing the men ahead of the agreed timetable. We are starting off on a new footing. This is a wonderful thing he released the folks early. That was a big thing. Very important to me. I really think we have a very good chance of doing something meaningful. If anybody would have said that five years ago or ten years ago or a year ago, you would have said thats not possible. You cant argue with that. Big win for the administration. The biggest Foreign Policy win i would say of this presidency. The question is now what happens at the meeting with kim jongun . Will he dismantle permanent verifiable pvid . Thats what the United States wants there. Is there Something Else . That would be disappointment to the president. To your point. Verifiable is the most important part of the negotiation and how we do verify will be difficult. We know very little with north korea. The president asked how this impacts the negotiation with kim jongun. He said no. We expect it later this month or early june in singapore. Up next is may 22nd of president moon at the white house. What happened to these men . That is the big question that needs to be answered. Reporter good morning, christine. That is the big question. Both of the families of the Fallen Soldiers and for the u. S. Military and the public. There is a question. What was the 12 Operations Forces did in conjunction with the niger counterparts, was it authorized . Who authorized it . Was it within the protocols of the u. S. Military in that dangerous region of west africa . When we were on the ground, christine, in niger, and nigerian officials questioned if the u. S. Had the right fire power when they went into the regions given that local forces come under attack under regular basis. This report should detail what happened and the big question will it lead to any policy changes . There is a substantial number of u. S. Boots on the ground in west africa and east africa as well fighting isis and Al Qaedalinked groups. Will there be a change in command control and types of missions and who goes on these missions . That is the key question. A few weeks ago, a Senior Commander said isis and al qaeda in the region is on the rise. The threat is there and how the u. S. Military deals with it is a question. And tensions soaring in the middle east. Israel and iran exchanging rocket fire. We will have live reports this morning from joint base iandrew and tehran. Welcome back to early start. Im dave briggs. Im christine romans. Lets start with the breaking news. Three americans released from north korea back on u. S. Soil. The medical plane carrying the former detainees touching down in maryland. The three men greeted by President Trump and first lady and Vice President pence and secretary of state mike pompeo. Historic release coming as final preparations made for the u. S. north korea summit. Jeff zeleny live from joint base andrews. Jeff, good morning. Reporter good morning, dave and christine. There was a moment of anxiety when the plane landed. You could feel the energy as we stood on the tarmac. The plane rolled to a stop and shortly after that, President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump boarded the plane and spent private moments with the three americans freed and flying overnight. Indeed, 20 hours to get back on u. S. Soil here in washington. This certainly is one step toward more diplomacy. Of course, the potential of that historic summit one month away here was hanging over everything. The president had this to say about kim jongun. Proudest achievement will be, this is part of it, but will be when we denuclearize that peninsula. Nobody thought we would be on this track. Im honored to help these people. These are great people. They have been through a lot. Its a great honor. The true honor is going to be if we have a victory in getting rid of Nuclear Weapons. No, not at all. We very much appreciate he allowed them to go before the meeting. It was sort of understood we would be able to get these terrific people home. He was nice in letting them go before the meeting. Frankly, we didnt think this was going to happen and it did. You could say were a little bit ahead it was a very important thing to all of us to be able to get these three great people out. Reporter it certainly signifies a new development. Heightening in the planning and preparations for that summit with kim jongun which is likely to happen next month. Likely in singapore. That has not been finalized yet. The president saying this clearly puts the discussions on a new footing. The president is back at the white house getting a bit of sleep. Before he left joint base andrews here, he was asked if he would ever visit north korea. The president said it could happen. Of course, much has to happen between now and that point. Now all the planning and preparations are going to be focused on that summit next month. Dave and christine. Not the last time we will hear from the president. He is in indiana for a rally tonight. A long day for the president. Jeff zeleny, thank you. Get a little bit of sleep at the white house. He has an 11 00 meeting. A new cnn poll Shows Improvement in the americans opinion of the president handling north korea. The poll showing 53 approval. Up from 35 last november. With the detainees back on american soil, what is next with the relationship with the u. S. And north korea. Lets go to seoul where Paula Hancocks is right now. This is just the first step and new footing as the president says with what will be a meeting between these two leaders. Reporter thats right, christine. That clearly this was a positive moment for the United States and north korea is treating it as a positive moment. The state run media saying kim jongun met with the u. S. Secretary of state mike pompeo. Talking about him in warm terms which is radical change from what we saw a matter of months ago. Also saying the u. S. President asked for the detainees back and kim jongun decided to grant them amnesty on the promise they would not come back and carry out these alleged crimes they believed they carried out in the first place. What we are seeing here is reaction from the region. We had welcome from south korea and the president moon jaein. There were some who were not released before or after the summit with kim jongun and moon jaein. He said he was meeting with the north Korean Leader and in japan. Hundreds of japanese abducted according to the government and Prime Minister shinzo abe saying they should be released as well. All right. Thank you, paula in seoul for us this morning. More on this. Harry kazianais is joining us live at 4 37. Great to see you. Thank you. It was a year ago that Otto Warmbier was released and essentially killed by north korea. How far have we come from june of 2017 to the release and return of the three americans this morning . We have come a long way. I remember a year ago talking about this and we were, if you fast forward to roughly december or january, we were on the brink of war with north korea. That would be nuclear war where millions of people would have potentially died. The steps are astounding. Looking at the pictures pull at your heart. This is astounding and were walking with history. We need to keep independe mind trica calls us to be skeptical of north korea. We need to remember the North Koreans are still thugs and murderers and we have to keep your guard up. I think that is a good point here. You know, the president made this remark that he thought they would bring the three men back after the meetings with the north Korean Leader. Instead it is before. What does that tell you about the intentions of kim jongun and the regime . I think he wants a successful summit. I dont think there is any way President Trump could have gone into the summit with the North Koreans with hostages hanging over the president s head. It would have soured the summit. There is no way to really do it. Considering the hard work and diplomacy happening now, remember we dont have a summit where you stick them in the room and they hash it out. They are actually working and doing the hard work now to figure out what kim is actually wanting to give up his Nuclear Weapons. You cannot have hostages. We keep hearing permanent verifiable irreversible dismantlin dismantling. How cautious should we be here . Im skeptical. The north korean playbook is clear. What they tried to do is when there is tension, you can go back and look at countless situations over the last 20 years. North koreans will escalate a crisis and will ask for talks and go into months or years of negotiations where the North Koreans continue to build up Nuclear Weapons program. We have to remember that the steps they have gone through so far shutting down the nuclear grounds. They can turn those back on within a few weeks. They can test missiles at anytime. We have to be skeptical. I think we have to try and see what we can accomplish here. It is very important, obviously. As for that relationship between the United States and north korea. Here is what the president said a short time ago about how far we have come and where we are now. Were starting off on a new footing. This is a wonderful thing he released these folks early. That was a big thing. Very important to me. I think we have a very good chance of doing something meaningful and if anybody would have said that five years ago or ten years ago or even a year ago, would you have said thats not possible. It is a hallmark of the president to congratulate himself for what people could not do before him. He took a shot at the New York Times. Im not surprised about that. He talked about the record Television Ratings at 3 00 a. M. It was a trumpian moment. It was a big win. No question. It is a big win. We really need to look forward to what happens. The question Everybody Needs to ask is what does kim want for Nuclear Weapons . It goes further. Kim has 5,000 tons of chemical weapons and biological weapons and over 1,000 missiles. Does the Trump Administration demand he get rid of all of the weapons of mass destruction . He can kill people without Nuclear Weapons. The challenge is they magnify a lot. This is step one. We will see more from the regime from the three men. They are being debriefed. A lot we dont know which makes it hard to trust. They will meet with intel owe efficientlhe intel officialsp to walter reed. And rockets were fired according to israelis were fired by the iranians. It marks the biggest confrontation to date. Good morning, fred. Reporter good morning, christine. The iranians are taking their time with a response. A couple of minutes ago, an iranian general did not manage to say anything about what was going in Golan Heights there overnight. The iranian government hasnt put out any statement. It is interesting. Iranian media is actually talking about what took place. They are only saying that israel conducted strikes on syrian territory. Not saying the iranians were part of it. Israel is blaming firing into the Golan Heights. They are waiting for a statement from the iranian government. Nothing forthcoming. The timing is crucial coming a day after President Trump pulled out of the nuclear agreement. The iranians ramping up the diplomatic machine.
