The signs of some marginal change may be possible. Senator marco rubio, the only republican willing to face his critics. He backs raising the minimum age from 18 to 21. In this country, if you are 18 years of age, you should not be able to buy a rifle. I will support a law. Traditionally i have not looked at looking at magazine clip size. After this and some details i learned, im reconsidering that position and ill tell you why. Ill tell you why. Because while it may not prevent an attack, but it may save lives in an attack. Rubio defended his opposition to broader gun control and violence legislation. Including an assault weapons ban. Here is an exchange with Fred Guttenberg who lost his daughter jaime. If i believed that law would prevent this from happening, i would support it. I will explain to you why its not. Senator rubio, my daughter, running down the hallway at Marjory Stoneman douglas was shot in the back with assault weapon. The weapon of choice. It is too easy to get. It is a weapon of war. The fact that you cannot stand with everybody in the building and say that . Im sorry. Rubio faced tough questions about a big source of his campaign opportunitying. Senator rubio, can you tell me you will not accept a single donation from the nra . The positions i hold on these issues on the Second Amendment are the views i hold as i entered office. The answer is i do support the Second Amendment and right and view of everyone to go to school and be safe. And i do support any law to keep guns out of the hands of any deranged killer. That is why i stood for you will take nra money . That is the wrong way to look first of all, people buy into my agenda. Our goal hold on. In the name of 17 people, you cannot ask the nra to keep their money out of your campaign . I think in the name of 17 people, i will pledge to you i will support a law that im talking nra money. I have told you i support lifting the age from 18 to 21 of buying a rifle. I understand before i walked out here that the organization is not in favor of that. Rubio is right about that. Rubio has an aplus rating from the nra. He is right about that. Before the town hall, the nra says it opposes raising the age to buy an ar15. The group sent a spokeswoman to the town hall. Dana lash. She would not budge on nra priorities and suggest local Law Enforcement missed crucial warning signs. I dont believe this insane monster should have been able to obtain a firearm. He had already taken knives to schools. He assaulted other students. 39 visits. This was known to Law Enforcement. Look, im not saying you can be everywhere at once. You have to followup on the red flags. Cnn town hall followed an entire day of action across the country. At the Florida State capital in tallahassee, busloads of students lobbied lawmakers. A number of lawmakers declined to meet with students. Outside, protesters from around the state demanding lawmakers to curb sales of assault style rifles. Vote them out those are chants of vote them out. Aimed at lawmakers who will not act. I felt supported. I felt he will make a change and he will help us and hopefully provide the safety for all of the other students. Small steps count. Hes really cooperating on participating with the small steps. Students across the country walked out in solidarity in washington and arizona and minnesota and kentucky and colorado and illinois. Students marched out of class defying some school districts. At Coral Springs high, some students formed a heart on the football field to show their support. Amazing. We have tal kopan live from washington, d. C. With more on this. Tal, there was an emotional white house listening session in the state dining room. To his credit, the president invited family members and friends of those killed in the parkland massacre. Some very poignant moments. I want to play sound about how the president responded. Lets take a listen. This was obviously be for people very adept at handling a gun and it would be its called concealed carry where a teacher would have a concealed gun on them. They go for special training and they would be there and you would no longer have a gunfree zone. That was the president s proposal at this listening session that teachers allow to conceal carry a weapon to be prepared if an active shooter situation. Was that the biggest proposal . I dont know it really seemed at the time that the president was sort of coming around to that as his main legislative priority. It was actually fascinating to watch that. There were some folks in the room who contextualize what the president said. There were others with support of security guards in school and there was push back in the room in the president s idea who those who oppose the idea. Parents from sandy hook who said that is not a good idea. It was a very Interesting Exchange to watch the president sort of listen as different sides presented their views. At the end, it was a little bit difficult to see what the president actually took in and took away from that meeting. I think that is the type of thing we have to see in coming days and weeks in terms of actual action from lawmakers and washington. And our cnn town hall which was emotional as well. A really important day, i think, on this discussion. There was a teacher, ashley kerth and senator rubio, to his credit, the only republican to appear at the town hall, and they talked about this idea of Arming Teachers. Am i supposed to get extra training to serve and protect on top of educate these children . Am i supposed to have a kevlar vest and strap it to my leg or on my desk . How am i supposed to go on that way . First, i dont support that. I would admit i would answer that as much as a father as i do a senator. The notion my kids are going to school with teachers armed with a weapon is not something that frankly im comfortable with. Beyond it, i think it has practical problems. It is interesting. I think that was an interesting moment when the president is supporting of Arming Teachers with conceal carry and marco rubio and teachers with the opposite view. That is right, christine. It goes back to the campaign. This is something President Trump has said going back to the campaign and his answer to a lot of public shootings has been perhaps people in the room should have guns. Of course, you know, experts and Law Enforcement professionals say the last thing you want in the situations is a shootout where you cant tell who the original shooter is and bullets flying and perhaps further casualties. A lot of push back to the idea that putting guns, especially when you get into schools. A teacher in the room in the white house who said teachers have enough responsibilities without having to worry about whether or not to use lethal force. There was applause that came from the room out of that. Certainly a discussion the white house is starting. We will see where they actually end up in terms of hearing some of the feedback and push back from teachers and other professionals. Tal, after the town hall, there was a tweet from senator rubio. He wrote banning all semiautomatic weapons may have been popular at the town hall, it was a position well outside the mainstream. Polling and recent poll from queen quinnipiac shows 67 support banning assault weapons. Do we get any sense aside from the emotion there will be any movement that will reflect what the American People are feeling on capitol hill . It is a tough question. On the one hand this feels like a new moment. These students, these young people speaking out are truly incredible. The way they have been able to capture the nations attention and speak so powerfully and eloquently about their own experience is something impressive and new. We had parents of victims before become activists, but the way these individuals who survived the shooting have really found their voice. It is something so powerful and what we saw in some of the town hall and listening session. At the same time, how many times have we been down this road and this is a game changer and this is something new. We did not see that turn into action. Again, it is really hard to say when you are, you know, betting on congress, it is always good to assume that action is going to be tough. Then pleasantly surprised and so far we havent seen them really get over this hill when it comes to common sense gun control. There seems to be a lot of support with the american public. If it were easy, we would have done it. Video games and glorifying violence. Broken boys and Media Coverage of the events. Accessibility of guns. All of it works together. You dont have to be for gun control to be against School Shootings. We can figure out a way to do this. Any idea . Is there a sense this time is different . That was a really compelling moment, christine. It is hard to say whether, you know, this moment will be different. How many times have we seen things we thought would be different . You go back to sandy hook and small, small children who were victims in the case. And you felt if anything, that would be the seminole moment in american history. I found it tragic in the room whose father was killed in columbine which was 20 years ago. To have victims of School Shootings spanning two decades in the room. It is tragic. You know, there was an interesting conversation as we have been listening to and talking about varying degrees of support for having more security in schools and a lot of talk about gun control. There was also a conversation about what one sandy hook mother called mental wellness. The sandy hook parents come together with a program to intervene troubled kids lives and get them help. Not flag them for an issue. Try to help them and students who are suicidal. You know, a lot of really interesting kconversation is happening. The action is tbd. The columbine parents talk about supporting kids in the school. There is bullying and broken boys and how to find them and support them. We talk about Arming Teachers. What about more School Psychologists . People who can intervene and help kids . And looking for Solutions Across the board. Not just gun control. That did strike us. The moment with the father there. Equally passionate are the teachers. Down in sunrise, florida, where the town hall was held. A teacher posed a question to senator rubio, the only republican to show up. Governor rick scott declined the invitation. Listen to the question to senator rubio. Am i supposed to get extra training to serve and protect on top of educate these children . There was push back in the room to the president s suggestion that teachers be arnomed. Very much not entirely in favor of the proposal. There are Law Enforcement professionals opposing this notion. There was a notion of a School Shooting incident to have some sort of shootout in the school. You know, again, it is unclear what actions will actually come out of this white house listening session and what President Trump will actually try to push through congress or propose. There was certainly a lot of twist pu swift push back. There was a radio show yesterday who talked to congresswoman claudia tenney. A gun rights advocate. She said something that got a lot of attention yesterday about who commits these Mass Shootings and who covers it up. Listen. It is interesting that so many of these people commit the mass murders end up being democrats. The media doesnt talk about that. The question was about inner city. Saying that democrats and many of the people that commit mass murders are democrats and the media is covering up. What do you make of that . It its unusual and certainly begs the question how you could make that argument. I dont know that you can make that argument with factual basis. The media typically doesnt report the political leaning of any shooter unless it is relevant. A terrorist action is defined to have political motivation undermining it. Certainly when a terrorist or shooting happens designed for a particular cause, that would be releva relevant. I dont see these mass casualty events that there are political motivations. Especially when you talk about troubled some of the individuals are and a complicated history. It is a stutter stopping moment for a lawmaker to bring that up. She is defending it and trying to explain it. It certainly is a bit unusual to go there for a politician. That Las Vegas Shooting with all of those people. Still no motive declared in that Las Vegas Shooting. No motive. And also no action taken. The one thing that came out of vegas immediately was the talk of bump stock legislation. Nothing changed. Sutherland springs massacre after that and now parkland as well. Tenney drawing stark focus here. Despite the emotion that it will be really tough to get anything done. It is still ugly politics.
