We start with reaction from the state of the union. President trump walking a fine line in his first state of the union speech last night. He held fast to the toughtalking populism he emboldened in year one, while making some effort to reach across the aisle. The hour and 20minute speech, the third longest state of the union ever, behind two bill clinton speeches. The president touting the economy, defending his America First approach, and even taking a bit of a jab at nfl players for not standing during the national anthem. The president pushed for his bipartisan immigration deal that includes a border wall and a path to citizenship for dreamers. As president of the United States, my highest loyalty, my greatest compassion, my constant concern is for americas children, americas struggling workers, and americas forgotten communities. So tonight i am extending an open hand to work with members of both parties, democrats and republicans, to protect our citizens of every background, color, religion, and creed. My duty and the sacred duty of every elected official in this chamber is to defend americans, to protect their safety, their families, their communities, and their right to the American Dream. Americans are dreamers, too. [ applause ] there were emotional tributes. Among those honored, a Police Officer and his wife. They adopted a baby from a mother addicted to heroin. The parents of teenage girls killed by ms13 gang members, and the parents of otto warmbier, the College Student imprisoned by north korea. He fell gravely ill and was released and returned to the u. S. Days before he died. The First Lady Melania Trump broke from tradition, arriving alone at her husbands speech to very loud applause. Shes been out of the spotlight lately since news broke of a reported payoff to a porn star to keep an alleged affair quiet. The president and first lady did return to the white house together after the speech. Democratic congressman joe kennedy of massachusetts gave the democratic response. He called out the president on the russia probe, civil rights, school shootings, and charlottesville. He also said this bullies may land a punch. They may leave a mark, but they have never, not once in the history of our United States, managed to match the strength and spirit of a People United in defense of their future. There were four other democratic reactions, as well, last night. Lets discuss this with deputy online editor of the Weekly Standard. In atlanta, good to see you, sir. Good morning. By and large, it was a pretty standard republican state of the union speech. Solidly delivered. What was the emotional support peacock in the speech . What surprised you . What made you think, wow, i didnt see that coming . Im not even going to try to play off of that, man. Thats a good segue. Well done. I think i think the emotional peacock, if were sticking with the metaphor here of what happened last night, was definitely some of these anecdotal stories. I think one of the things that we have learned about President Trump and i think that hes actually captured this relatively well as far as a messaging aspect goes, we saw it last night, was trying to put a human touch on a lot of what it is that he wants to achieve in terms of his agenda. So when he talks about the baby who was the baby of the heroin addict who was adopted and is singling out how its a cops family that did that and talking about Otto Warmbiers family, hes talking about the north Korean Defector, all of these things are putting a lot of faces on particular policies that he wants to advocate. Its definitely a lesson i think has been taken from democratic playbooks. Theyve been good at this in state of the Union Addresses where they use the human stories to try to relate to what it is the president wants to get out of washington. I think you have to roll those up inside of a larger package of what he accomplished last night. Surveying the response this morning. You know, the new american moment is what he proclaimed. An appeal to unity and bipartisanship. The wall street journal saying this, the president was playing a different role last night, playing the role of optimist. Do you think this helps him in any of his poll numbers . I mean, i know that our polling right after showed the people who watched the speech, 48 , said that it was very positive. 22 said somewhat positive. Can he get a bounce . Can he get momentum from this . All depends on how it translates to legislating translating to legislating. We always hear that state of the unions are laundry lists. First of all, i dont know anyone who keeps a laundry lists that are 5,000 words long. These speeches tend to drag on so long and incorporate so many policies that try to hit them all we saw this last year is borderline impossible. Health care took up almost the entire year. Tax reform, a massive undertaking, pushed across the finish line at the last minute. You want to get to infrastructure, Prescription Drug prices, the opioid crisis, a lot of this requires the passage of bills that meet a 60 passage in the senate. It takes time. Thats where the proof is going to be, in the pudding. The president has a positive economic message to take to the voters. Given that, what do you make of the five different democratic responses last night and this moment where the president talked about the record low black unemployment rate. They cut to the congressal black Congress Congressional black caucus. You see a smattering of applause at best. What do you make of the resistance . Well, i think a lot of members knew what the president was trying to do. I mean, its unfortunate in this time, but so much of what we see when it comes to rhetoric like this is shrouded in politics. Shrouded in partisan messaging. You know, you can say that there are going to be certain wonky economists who make note of a number like it and take it as a positive step in terms of economic progress. If you put it in the robe of politics, its going to be interpreted a different way. Thats kind of the moment of what these state of the Union Addresses are. I think thats where the members are coming from, the democrats giving responses were coming from last night. Dave and i noticed bright and early when we were talking about the speech together, a republican president state of the union, usually you hear something about deficit, debt, fiscal responsibility. Not in this speech. The Washington Post has an editorial about what was missing. Mr. Trump did not mention some of the biggest threats, the fiscal crisis worsened by his tax bill, threatens future generations. The world continues to warn russian meddling poses a threat to u. S. Forces. Sadly the morning after a long speech, none of that is going to look any different. From your perspective, what was missing . I think the debt and deficit thing is a noted absence given the fact that this is still paul ryans house of representatives and a congress that has this policy impell grant all over it. Weve heard for the longest time ryan talking about the entitlement cliff thats going to come. Actuarial warnings coming from, you know, medicare and Social Security trustees for the longest time. The fact the president didnt want to touch that during the campaign and has continued it now definitely a noticeable absence from the speech last night. Especially if you talk about infrastructure where theres disagreement between the president and even members of his party about how to fund an infrastructure, you know, bill. Would the government take on more debt to have some seed money in there . Its unclear. Right. Well check back in about 30 minutes. Thank you. President trump said the u. S. Must modernize and rebuild the nuclear arsenal, public interesting to north korea. Pointing to north korea. Perhaps someday in the future there will be a magical moment when the countries of the world will get together to eliminate their nuclear weapons. Unfortunately, we are not there yet. North koreas reckless pursuit of Nuclear Missiles could very soon threaten our homeland. We are waging a campaign of maximum pressure to prevent that from ever happening. Past experience has taught us that complacency and concessions only invite aggression and provocation. I will not repeat the mistakes of past administration thats got us into this very dangerous position. A north Korean Defector was a guest of honor last night. The president describing how a train ran over his limbs after he collapsed from hunger as a child. The president said he travelled on crutches across china and Southeast Asia to freedom. He brought the crutches with him to washington. Now pyongyang is promising a new show of force. Lets get the latest from will ripley live in seoul, south korea. I just have to imagine that having the north Korean Defector at this important and visible event with the president of the United States certainly sends a message to north korea. Reporter and one that the north korean regime will be very angry about. Keep in mind, this defector has called for a regime change repeatedly and is not somebody that north korea would like to see standing next to the first lady of the United States, getting a standing ovation from members of the house and all of the United States lawmakers who were present in the room. Thats one thing that was going to irritate the north koreans. President trump also being ambiguous about the possibility of a preemptive military strike. Something that the nowformer candidate for u. S. Ambassador to south korea, victor cha, said in an oped for the Washington Post. He told the administration he strongly opposes, thinks it would be disastrous, it could cost tens of thousands, even hundreds of thousands of american lives. And cha believes that may be why he was dropped from consideration consider that post of ambassador and still no ambassador to south korea more than a year into the Trump Administration. Also my sources are telling me next week, north korea planning a huge show of force, allowing up to 100 Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles, 100 missiles and rockets together. This would be a dramatic message on the eve of the Winter Olympics in pyeongchang. He sources saying it is not out of the question that north korea may consider a missile test either before or during the olympics to send the message to the United States that they are unhappy about the tone of the discussions involving the north and south interkorean talks and the fact that there are u. S. Naval assets and military troops that continue to be assembled in the region. A reminder of what a dangerous, tricky, and precarious position it is. Thank you for walking us through it. Thanks. While the russia investigation was not addressed in the state of the union speech, as you might expect, what was the president saying about a controversial memo that could affect the probe . The president done mention russias meddling in the 2016 election. He did label the kremlin as a rival on matters of national security, though. Lets go live to moscow and bring in fred pleitgen. Theres new reaction from moscow this morning . Tell us. Reporter yeah, certainly is. A reaction from the spokesman for vladimir putin, dmitry peskov. We asked if there was a thaw between the u. S. And russia, he said unequivocally that is not the case. He said the word thaw or perspective of a thaw doesnt current bilateral relations between u. S. And the u. S. The russians still angry about the list published yesterday with the name of joligarchs. There were members of the Russian Administration that said yes, it was better that russia was not mentioned more often than it was. Of course all of the issues around the alleged election meddling still going on. Weve found out that apparently last week there was a highlevel delegation from the Russian Intelligence Community actually in the United States meeting with the cia. And of course that has a lot of people in washington asking questions about who exactly went to the meetings and what exactly was said. Especially in light of the fact that one of the members of the russian delegation may have been the head of their Foreign Intelligence Service who has been sanctioned in the u. S. Since 2014. Thank you. When it comes to the war on terror, the president said this in his state of the Union Address our wtroops in afghanistan have new rules of engagement. Along with our heroic afghan partners, our military is no longer undermined by artificial timelines, and we no longer tell our enemies our plans. Those remarks come amid a new surge of violence in afghanistan. In particular in kabul where youll find Senior International correspondent Nick Paton Walsh live for us. I dont think this will transform a difficult task overnight. Weve had a bloody ten days in kabul leaving many insecure. Were seeing the Trump Administration being quite clear that they dont now believe this is the time for peace talks. It was a farfetched prospect but key tenet of the military strategy that you would pummel the insurgency enough that they would seek a political accommodation of sorts. That isnt likely to happen at this point, but its certainly off the table in sellers of u. S. Policy in terms. U. S. Policy now. Stark, dangerous times ahead. Sure are. Thanks. 18 minutes past the hour. President trump touting the economic successes during his first year, soaring stocks, low unemployment, and how some Workers Benefit from Corporate Tax cuts. Roughly three million workers have already gotten tax cut bonuses. Many of them thousands and thousands of dollars per worker. Dozens of companies have given bonuses. A small fraction of the billions in Corporate Tax savings. Trump also credited slashing regulations for rebuilding industry. Now he wants to rebuild infrastructure. We built the Empire State Building in just one year. Isnt it a disgrace that it can now take ten years just to get a minor permit approved for the building of a simple road. The president called on bipartisan support for 1. 5 trillion in infrastructure spending. A planned combination of government and private contributions at home. Abroad, trumps trade talk once again turned tough. We will protect American Workers and American Intellectual property through strong enforcement of our trade rules. Now trump did not specifically name china, but the u. S. Is currently investigating chinese theft of intellectual property that could spell more trade measures. Last week the administration slapped tariffs on chinese solar panels. Theres no crying in football unless your eagles quarterback nick foles. Andy shows what got foles choked up. How did the president do . I mean, our instant reaction was i think 48 said it was well received. 22 negative, 29 . How do you rate it . I dont want to be reductive, but if i was a republican i thought it was fantastic. A democrat, apocalyptic. He did a good job of hitting core points messaging on what it was that made him president in the firchs. This is what i found interesting about the speech. We hear about these state of the Union Addresses being litanies of policies, 5,000 words this was. If we remember year one of the Trump Presidency, it was overrun by tax reform and health care reform, the latter a failed effort. In this speech last night, you heard about immigration and the Border Security and you have and daca compromise. You heard about Prescription Drugs, the minneapolis cri th and national security. Theres an old Robin Williams joke about retracting back to american borders and the statue of liberty shaking her fist particularly lard, and that should be the particularly harksd a hard, and that should be the new foreign policy. I think thats the stuff trump talked about on the campaign trail. Its interesting to see how much hes get to in year two. You mentioned the 5,000 words. Its interesting, by the numbers, yahoo broke it down. Obama first used 7,000 but was 14 minutes shorter than trumps which was an interesting dynamic in terms of the delivery of the speech and applause lines. Pacing was maybe not perfect. You bring up the three reactions. Hes never going to reach the resistance. The base is with him no matter what. Who he needs are those people who dont care so much about the day, drip, drip, drip, the tweets. They care about the economy, they care about some unity. Heres what the president said about americans and here was his most unifying overall message. Listen. Over the last year the world has seen what we always knew that no people on earth are so fearless or daring or determined as americans. If there is a mountain, we climb it. If there is a frontier, we cross it. If theres a challenge, we tame it. If theres an opportunity, we seize it. So lets begin tonight by recognizing that the state of our union is strong. Many pointed out that Nancy Pelosis reaction that we missed there. But in terms of a unifying message, how did he do, and he also said the time for trivial fights is behind us. If in fact that is true in the days ahead, how important is tha that . To tackle the question, aint no mountain high, aint no valley low, aint no river wide enough messaging is always a good thing for a president to hit on in these sorts of speeches. Youre trying to captivate the country here and the idea of trying to bring opposing parties together. A hymn that we hear sung at every one of these speeches. And a lot of president s have a difficult time fulfilling it. Its important to hit upon that. The question of whether hes able to hit on that in the coming year, that depends on his personal demeanor. Politico had a fascinating story this morning about the alternative Trump Presidency that was kind of imagined last night of the president being more dignified, sticking to policy prescriptions, and what would have happened if he didnt tweet his way into political on, bolivian like he has at so many moments in the past 12 months. So well see if theres some sort of pivot. We hear that in terms of temperament, i think thats doubtful. On the policy side, it will be interesting to see how much he can get down because i think there is more bipartisan buyin when it comes to the infrastructure stuff. Its interesting. Theres been reporting from some reporters who follow closely that the president feels like he hit his stride. He looks at the economy and the tax cuts in particular. And he sees that he is winning and that hes doing a great job and really feels that way and is telling people that. When you look at a republican president delivering to their state of the union, there were really republican things that werent this there, no talk about debt and deficits. No talk about fiscal, you know, fiscal restraint. Its almost as if they got their tax cuts, and brian who is also a deficit hawk, you know, they just love their tax cuts so much. Theyre not talking about some of the other things. This is what the Washington Post says in an editorial. Mr. Trump did not mention any of the nations biggest longer term threats, the fiscal crisis worsened by his tax bill threatens future generations. Economic inequality is high. The than meddling in u. S. Elections. Sadly, the morning after a long speech, none of that is going to look any different. What say you . Its an interesting editorial. Depending on the reader, you can interpret that multiple ways. If youre a democrat, youre reading about the Global Warming and the stuff about the russia investigation and saying hear, hear. If you are a republican whos particularly concerned about the past republican message, the economic conservative message, fiscal restraint that has been championed by paul ryan and the like the last decade that talk about no discussion of debt and entitlement spending is going to be resonant. So i definitely think that you cant get to everything in these speeches. Theyre 5,000 words long. Theres a reason some stuff is left out. I have a feeling its not high on the president s checklist. I think the human moments did well. I thought they wove the human stories very, very nicely. I think how that was put together, the moments worked. Did any of this move the ball forward toward the bigger immigration deal . Well see ahead. Thank you, my friend. Nice to see you. President trump also said the u. S. Must modernize and rebuild its nuclear arsenal, pointing to north korea. Reckless pursuit of Nuclear Missiles could threaten our homeland. Reporter we know there are a lot of things in the president s state of the Union Address that are likely going to get the north korean regime very angry. First of all, putting a defactor front and center whos called for a regime change. That will be very infuriating for kim jongun. Also the fact that President Trump didnt talk a lot about diplomacy and left it ambiguous whether the United States maximum pressure strategy could include a preemptive military strike. The former candidate for u. S. Ambassador to south korea, victor cha, a former Bush Administration official and former academy whos highly respected, put an oped in the Washington Post saying that he thinks he was dropped for consideration from that job after he told the Trump Administration he disagrees that a military option is a viable one saying tens if not hundreds of thousands of people could be killed, 200,000plus americans on the korean peninsula, at any given time. Cha saying that as north korea is preparing for a massive military parade. I have two diplomatic sources telling me that up to 100 Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles will be put on display in kim ilsung square. And not ruling out the possibility a north Korean Missile test in the near future, all of it to send a strong message to the Trump Administration and on the eve of the winter games here in south korea. New reaction from moscow to the president s speech. What is it . Reporter yeah, youre absolutely right. One of the things we asked the spokesman for the kremlin for was whether or not the president didnt mentioned alleged meddling in the election in 2016, whether that meant there could be a thaw between moscow and washington. He said at this point in time he does not believe that there is the prospect for a thaw in bilateral relations in their current state. He even went one step further because the russians are still angry about that list that was published by the treasury just yesterday with the names of oligarchs. He says it shows the u. S.
