A new report says the president trying to keep his allies in charge of the russia investigation, probable new proof obstruction of justice by President Trump. If you want to know what its like to live on mar, youre about to get a chance this weekend. Temperatures plunging to levels that will make this past week seem like summer. Good morning. Welcome to early start. Im dave briggs, a bit warmer. You made it to work. Im impressed. I had to stay in the city. Its friday, january 5. 5 00 a. M. In the east. We start with a highly anticipated book about President Trumps first months in the white house. Goes on sale today. Michael wolffs fooir and fury comes out days ahead of schedule. Defying legal threats from mr. Trumps lawyers. Cnn has obtained a copy. Wolff was given extraordinary access to the west wing early in the add administration. The more than two00 interviews. We should note some of the reporting has been corroborated, there are errors identified. Some of the details stunning portray the president as erratic easily distracted. Over night the president himself poked holes in the credibility. He tweeted i authorized zero access to white house actually turned him down many times for author of phony book. Full of lies, misrepresentations and sources that dont exist. Look at this guys past and watch what happens to him and sloppy steve. That, of course, a new trump nickname for steve bannon, who the book quotes saying some harsh things about trumps family and inner circle. Sloppy steve trending on twitter. Thursday, the press secretary sara sanders called the book complete fantasy, sad and pathetic and forced to respond to critics questions about the president s Mental Fitness. Its disgraceful and laughable. If he was unfit, he probably wouldnt be sitting there and have defighted the most qualified group of candidates the Republican Party has ever seen. This is an incredibly strong and good leader. Earlier, she introduced a special guest at the white house briefing. President trump appeared on video to tout the economy. No mention the book. Steps away from the press room, mind you. As for the books direct quotes from bannon so far, bannon has disputed none of them. More on that in a moment. Among the revelations in fire and fury, President Trumps first hand involvement crafting the misleading response to the trump tower meeting with the russian lawyer. The book says quote, the president insisted that the meeting at trump tower was purely and simply about russian adoption policy. Thats what was discussed. Le period. Period. Even though it was likely, if not certain at the time had the incriminating email chain. In fact it was quite possible jared and ivanka at the time had the email chain. The president ordered no one should let on to the more problem mat ix discussion about Hillary Clinton. The New York Times first disclosed the meeting last year reporting was actually to get dirt on Hillary Clinton, not adoption. Washington post later reported it was President Trump himself who dictated the initial misleading statement. At the time Sarah Sanders said President Trump had quote weighed in as any father would. And wolff says it led one of mr. Trumps spokes men to quit. Also this morning new reporting from the New York Times reports President Trump lobbied Jeff Sessions not to recuse himself from the russian probe. That move might be considered in evidence of obstruction of justice by the president. Times reporting special Counsel Robert Mueller is aware that last march trump order the white House Counsel don mcgann to stop sessions from refusing himself from overseeing the investigation. The incident another possible example of trumps influencing. Congressman, top democrat calls mcganns reported conduct completely unacceptable. He says mcgann should make himself available to the commit it. New york times also reporting that four days before then fbi director james comey was fired last may, an aide to attorney general Jeff Sessions asked a congressional staffer whether he had damaging information about comey, a person with knowledge of the meeting tells the times quote, wanted one negative article a day in the news media about mr. Comey. The Justice Departments spokeswoman tells cnn this did not happen. This book also includes President Trumps unflattering description of james comey which apparently came after the president fired him. Comey was a rat, repeated trump. There were rats everywhere. You had to get rid of them. John dean, he repeated. Do you know what he did to nixon . He was a white House Counsel that was fired by nixon and testified against him to the senate water gate committee. A few cautions to offer about the book. Michael wolff has a history of writing splashy stuff. His sources and methods have come under scrutiny. He paints quite a few scenes without direct quotes at all and sources at times is vague but much of what is in the book crosschecks with earlier reports from Credible Media outlets. These challenges have included dealing with off the record or deep background material casually put on the report. Sources who provided accounts in confidence and subsequently shared them widely. The interesting description. Sarah sanders sounds like loose lips. The what she said is hed ask for a request for the president and never was granted that. What he says is he was there hanging around and talking to people. A fix fewer in the white house. White house reporters have seen him around the white house with access. He has tapes of some of these kefrgss. Lets bring inwill we go with brilliant debecket or you really got to step back from all the little elements of this and look at the 30,000foot view. The here is what Michael Wolff writes. In h particular in this Hollywood Reporter story yesterday. Says hoping for the best with their personal futures as well as the countrys future depending on it. My indelible impression of talking to them and observing them through much of the first year is they all, 100 came to believe he was incapable of functioning in his job. That is devastating stuff right there considering he had 200 ontherecord conversations. He has tapes of it. How does this hurt the white house narrative . I think there are big takeaways, but three for me so far are number one im not sure how much i can believe. You add the the caveat which is that some of wolffs reporting in the past has come under fire. Thats for me thats a smaller issue. The big issue is that most of wolffs sources are white house sources, and one of the more unfortunate things about the Trump White House is that he has surrounded himself with known and proven liars, so exactly how much am i supposed to believe if your source is from those people who brought us alternative facts. Wolff can be fine. I can be asked to believe him but i dont know if i can be asked to believe his sources. On top of that, the other issues with the book is that not so much its not unique in telling me anything i dont know. Whats unique about it is telling me so much of what i think many of us have long suspected. Its almost a reverse emperors new clothes. This trump has been trump. Always presented himself as sort of loud im pet twus, sort of having a temper. Reading this book isnt so much i didnt know that about trump. Its okay, this seems to be basically everything weve seen in public. Having sara sanders come out, she didnt really dispute that wolff was there, or that wolff was interviewing people. She was wolff was turned down for some things or he didnt talk to the president. The okay. Wolff already told us that. The thats not really disputing anything here. Let me lets talk about the president did comment about this. The asked about steve bannon any words about him. This is what he said. Steve bannon betray you, mr. President . Any words about steve bannon. I dont know. He called me a great man last night. He obviously changed his tune pretty quick. Thank you all very much. Thank you. I dont talk. Thats just a misnomer. Thank you. The president clearly wanted to get that out there. He called me a great man last night but i dont talk to him. Why hasnt steve bannon disputed any of these comments in this book . Where is bannon in all this now. I think he actually said. I think its accurate and thats why Breitbart News was touting half of his big juicy quotes about treason on the website the other day. He was one of the chief sources. That goes back to my main point about having difficulty believing. All this book could be true, some of it could not be true. If its someone like bannon who apparently fed wolff a lot of this information. Its known political agitator. Someone who interferes in politics, knowingly lying. The thats what bannon does, so why should i believe half of what he says . I believe he said it but whether or not the stuff about ivanka and jared. I got their couple name stuck in my head. Whether any of that is true, how much is accurate or a lot of back stabbing that again, we already knew about this. This is just confirmation. Thats why i want to add the caveat about being careful. So much of this book feels like confirmation of priors. You want to be cynical and skeptical not cynical. Its almost too good to check. I cant deny it. Its the most enter p taining fascinating stuff ive read in a long time. Number one on amazon and why theyre releasing it early on sale. This is the leader of the free world. Were all like oh yeah, people have been talking about how its just it has real ramifications. Not only has steve bannon not denied any of this, the white house was well he clearly knows john boehner and some of the ages of the Staff Members are wrong. Theyve got to do better than that. But another good read you could find is in the New York Times. Because this points to possible obstruction by the president that he urged his don mcgann to get Jeff Sessions no the to recuse himself from the russian investigation. And the view of the attorney general, which is really interesting from this reporting, quote, mr. Trump said he expected his top Law Enforcement officials to safeguard him the way he believed Robby Kennedy as attorney general had done for his brother, and eric holder had done for barack obama he then asked wheres my roy cohn. Whats wrong with that characterization . This is something weve known about trump. The issue is either he doesnt know that the attorney general doesnt exist to protect the president or he doesnt care. All this reminds me a great scene where a slot machine is broken and one of the floor manager firing the character saying you are either too stupid to see it or in on it. Either way you cant be trusted. Either you dont know what the ag does, or you dont care. The either way, thats not exactly president ial behavior i want to see. I want a calvin cool idge. Calvin and the casino in the same. Come back in a half hour. All right . Come back. Were going to talk about a new record high for the dow. North korea officially accepting a proposal from south korea to begin peace talks, the first high level contact in over two years, facetoface negotiations scheduled to begin tuesday, one day after kim jonguns birthday. Cnns will ripley monitoring developments for us live from seoul. You know this region so well. Youve been to north korea many times. Its significant that they are at least answering the hot line and talk ing facetoface. The how significant is this development . Reporter well, its significant just as you said, that theyre discussing after two years of radio silence, countless missile tests, the kind of thing that has been pushing this peninsula closer to war. Now perhaps a turn towards diplomacy. The first step securing the north korean olympic delegation permission to come here to south korea to participate in the Winter Olympics. It can be a win on both sides many here in south korea the president came to power on a platform of engaging with north korea. Which has been difficult. And then kim jongun can say that his athletes are marching on an International Stage that he around his policies have force the United States the and south korea from doing the exercises back to a later date. Once they get the discussions from the olympics out of the way, there are other issues they want to discuss. Talk about divided families and of court the big issue the north Koreas Nuclear program. They perhaps will lead to bigger discussions, perhaps a meeting at some point between north koreas leader and south koreas president. Of the theres a lot of skep tichl as well. In japan the defense minute nisster the world doesnt want to be caught off guard by another nuclear test or missile launch. Dont forget the nukes. That is the most important part of this story. Thank you so much. New report this morning said the president may have obstructed justice by demanding his political allies lead the russia probe. It comes as the president tries to change the conversation from this new book with debic spicti that have critics raising questions about his fitness for office. No mention of the book. And that was from steps away from the press room. Odd . You decide. As for the books direct quotes from bannon, so far he has disputed none of them. Privately he kept trying to ration lies why one would be a member of the kkk. They might not actually believe what the kkk believed and they probably do not believe what it used to believe. Anyway, to really knows what the kkk believes now. It of course represents white supremacy. Trump of course blamed both sides from the deadly Charlottesville Violence walking back and saying it again days later. Bannon fired by the end of that week. A few cautions to offer about the book. Michael wolff has a history of writing that make as splash. His journalistic sources and methods coming under scrutiny. He paints quite a few scenes without direct quotes add all and sources at times vague. But much of whats in the book crosschecks with earlier reports from Credible Media outlets. He was seen on campus. He was a fly on the wall. Heres how wolff explains the credibility issues in the books preface. These challenges have included dealing with offtherecord or deep background material that was later casually put on the record. Sources to provided accounts in confidence and subsequently shared them widely and a frequent inattention to setting any parameters on the use of a conversation. Among the many balancing acts wolff lists in writing this book. Lets bring in detectibecket ad. How the president has not been directing the new cycle over the past few days as he likes to but sort of consumed by it in a different way. This book has overtaken this thing. Sarah huckabee forced to answer questions about the Mental Fitness of her boss. Michael wolff writes this about his impression from 200some interviews. Hoping for the best. With the personal futures as well as the countrys future depending on it, my indelible impression of talking to them and observing them through much of the first year of the presidency is that they all, 100 came to believe he was incapable of functioning in his job. Hes talking about the people around the president. The hes talking about white house aides. That is really a remarkable position to be operating from. What do you make of that . Couple thinkings jump out. First, it seems extremely entertaining. I cant stop reading it. I would be a liar it i said otherwise, but my concerns arent so much with the credible of wolff. He was been criticized and hes but my biggest problem isnt with his credibility. I can the issue i have is the book relies primarily on white house sources and unfortunately President Trump has surrounded himself by known and proven liars. Were asked to believe people who brought us all ternative facts. Were being asked to believe them and the inside scoops they have on their own administration. Putting that aside, let essay the inside sources are accurate, whats so fascinating about this book is that its not giving so much a new look at trump, as its mostly confirming stuff we can see for ourselves with our own eyes during the election. So hes angry, likes to do things his way, impatient. This was all stuff he put out for the world to see during the leak. Disrupter. This is how what it looks like in the white house. Thats part of the reason people voted for him. He said he would literally do. The. You know what else he said he would do . Said he would sue people. Said it throughout the campaign. Throughout his career. An article that 20 times trump threatened to sue someone just during the campaign. Will he follow through with this lawsuit . If he doesnt, what does that tell us. s he not going to follow through with it. The funniest thing about the cease and desist letter dont give this fire any oxygen. Just let it go. Maybe even send out a distracting tweet about north korea or whatever. Instead they came out with angry denunciations which piques everyones interest and now, with this letter, the cease and desist, he guarantees this will be the best selling book of 2018. Who doesnt want to read the juicy tellall . Theres a lot in there about a lot of stories about ivanka trump maybe being the first woman president. She and her husband with some sort of deal or pact if the opportunity arises it would be ivanka who would run for president. A lot of stuff also fuzzy and head line worthy. Ivanka, by the way, she tweeted yesterday about what im sure she would rather we all be talking about, dow up 25,000 points for the first time in history. Layoffs lowest since 1990. The all of that is true, but it just reminds me that the president has not been able to really hold on to his successes, right . Or even what he thinks are his successes, and drive a story line with that. He keeps getting consumed by the personality issues. Right. The biggest problem you saw this during the election. He hasself control issues. Thats the most polite way i can put it. The the fact that its more than likely that steve bannon is the source for most everything in this book is fairly embarrassing for the white house considering the position he was given. Which i might add was against the advice of just about everybody else around trump. So he, again, he has some suc successes. But he undercuts himself with either his own mouth or the inexperienced and unprofessional people he surrounds himself with. Hes his own worst enemy. Thats the problem with republicans as they approach 2018. They want people walking in the booth saying wow, republican policies are leading this economy to altogether new hie heights. Thats not what theyre thinking about right now. Also a new read in the New York Times about the president urging his legal counsel, don mcgann to get Jeff Sessions to not recuse himself from the russia investigation. Its really how he characterizes the role of the attorney general thats interesting. This from the New York Times. Mr. Trump said he expected his top Law Enforcement official to safeguard him the way he believed robert f. Kennedy as attorney general had done for his brother john kennedy. And then mr. Trump asked wheres my roy cohn. This article may be further proof of obstruction of justice but what about that characterization of the role of the attorney general . What does that tell you . It tells me one thing that i think i already knew about trump. And i think a lot of voters knew, which is either he doesnt understand how the United States government works, or he doesnt care. The attorney general isnt the bodyguard for the president. The attorney general doesnt exist to protect the president. Stuff like this reading stuff like this always reminds me of that scene is casino where robert robfiring the floor manager and the argument is either youre too stupid to be in on it or you were in on it, either way you cant be trusted. Im reminded of that scene. Either the president doesnt understand what the attorney general does or he does, and doesnt care. Either way, hes not a person to be trusted. Thats my takeaway. What do you think . Trump supporters, people who may not have been politically active before, the people who voted him into office, do you think that they look at this and say yes, hes blowing up the place. Awesome. I think yeah. There is going to be a healthy contingent, significant number will be supportive of this. Say you know what . It was broken from the inside. He was voted in as a disrupter. He said hell be a bull in a china shop. People are all right. If it it werent a snow day id be going home and watching casino. The kids are home. Get the edited version. Thank you. Steve bannons influence moving forward looking murky. There is a hard push to convince executives at bright part to fire him. Hes executive chairman of the altright website. Heres the white house take. Should bright barts part ways with steve bannon after the book . I certainly think that its something they should look at and consider. In less than three hours the Labor Department will release the fine fall report. Prediction, a total of 2. 1 million jobs in the year. Thats a solid showing, but put that in perspective here. It will be the slowest jobs growth in the past four years, still robust but that puts it in perspective. The Unemployment Rate should hold. Americas hot job market missing strong wage growth. Likely grew about 2. 5 on an annual rate last month. Wage growth has been a weak spot for years. Before the recession annual growth hit 3 or more. But the u. S. Has barely moved ba past 2. 5 . Of theres no one reason why. Congress beamed floeglobalizati. Lets get to cnn meteorologist derek van dam live in the weather center. You are a busiman. It has been a long week. I know how brutal its been. It is take your breath away cold outside. Some interesting statistics. Talking about 75 of u. S. Population dipping below freezing. 30 actually dropping below zero degrees. I credible. Right now we have 130 million americans right now under a windchill warning or a advisory stretching from the great lakes to the midatlantic states. The this is what it feels like on your exposed skin. Negative 8 in the big apple. Pittsburgh negative 18. That is the windchill feel the like factor. Two ways to look at the storm. Its on its way out. But were still going to feel the effects of this noreaster for several days to come in the effect of more cold weather and unfortunately below freezing windchill factors. This is how much snow fell across massachusetts, new jersey, rhode island, new york and krt. Upwards af foot to foot and a half in many locations grounding several flights. We know that and a lot of those Flight Cancellations lasting right into friday. Talking about the deep south. This is impressive. We have hard freeze warnings from mississippi right through the florida pan handle. Look at mobile, 27 degrees, you should be about 40 right now. This cold weather lasts right through the weekend but warms up just in time for mid week next week. Dave . Christine . Okay. Thats good. Thats good. I like the very end of that. I feel so bad for those midwestern snowbirds down in the pan handle thought they were going to escape. They didnt. My parents included. Mine too. Thanks, derek. Now to weed killer as the New York Daily News called it. Attorney general Jeff Sessions reversing federal policy on marijuana. Hes ending the obama administrations handsoff policy. They could pit federal prosecutors against local Law Enforcement. Weed remains illegal under federal law. The shift coming days after california became the eighth state along with washington, d. C. To allow recreational pot. As a reminder, heres what then candidate trump said about legalizing marijuana in 2016. I wouldnt do that, no. So you think colorado should be able to do what its doing. I think its up to the states yeah. Of the i think it should be up to the states many absolutely. Attorney general has a history of railing against the use of recreational marijuana.
