July 2013 giving a sermon. He may have been killed in a russian air strike last month. Cnn correspondent diana magnay live in moscow with the breaking details. What are Russian Media saying about this may 28th air strike, and what kind of evidence are they giving to support the notion that they have killed this guy . Reporter christine, at the moment, it is russian state media who say that the Defense Ministry is investigating information that al baghdadi was killed in a may 28th russian air strike in the Southern Suburbs of raqqah. The information theyre getting is that he was attending a meeting at a command post there with various other isis personnel, trying to work out how to get isis fighters out of the city of raqqah, which, of course, is being squeezed, both by russian and Syrian Forces and by the coalition, and that he may have been killed alongside others in a russian air strike on may 28th. Now, of course, we have heard in the past reports that al baghdadi has been killed, so that is presumably by the russians are caveating this with, we are investigating, we are trying to verify that he may have been killed. But of course, for the russians, if this is true, it would mark a major victory in their campaign against isis, and i think its important to note that if you read the way the Defense Ministry has been couching their campaign against terrorism in syria, they have been saying these last few days that it has been the russians and the air power that they are providing to Syrian Ground troops that have been doing the bulk of the fighting against isis and al nusra in syria, and that, in fact, the coalition, who, of course, have been leading air strikes on raqqah, have been more involved in trying to target Syrian Ground forces than they have terrorism, which is perhaps a line that is not surprising to come from the russians. All of this, of course, comes in the context of isis being squeezed both in iraq and syria, christine. Diana, for those at home wondering why its just this one piece of video youre seeing of al baghdadi, thats the only known video of one of the most dangerous men in the world. It was july of 2014, delivering a sermon in mosul. Prior to that, only two known public pictures had been taken of al baghdadi. If you could give us a little context on why this would be so significant in the war against isis. Reporter well, not only is he a secretive man, but he is one of the most wanted men in the world as the leader of isis, and of course, has built isis into this very, very powerful organization that it is. Mosul was always his base, and that was where that original video of him preaching a sermon came from, the video that is repeated over and over again when we talk about abu bakar al baghdadi. But of course, mosul has been heavily bombarded. We are in the final stages of mosul being taken by iraqi Ground Forces, and that has resulted in isis being pushed out of mosul to, through the border into syria and up towards raqqah. And now that youre seeing the push on raqqah in syria in turn by Coalition Forces, by Syrian Defense forces, members of the Syrian Opposition coming in to push isis out of raqqah, you are also getting a squeeze on them into the south of the city and out to cities like pal meira. And so, it is no surprise that baghdadi may have been up in raqqah, but there is also reports from u. S. Intelligence that he was, perhaps, in anbar province, which is now being pushed by which is fwhow basically dominated by shia militias. So, it is unclear, and of course, we await to see what the russians say, whether they can actually verify that information and what evidence they give us to prove that he was actually killed. The brutality, diana, of this man is well documented on people of the region, no question. I mean, weve seen these beheadings, these, you know, burning people in oil. Any opponents of isis, the brutality is just sickening, no question about that. For americans, they may remember the story of kayla mueller, the young woman who was leaving a Doctors Without Borders hospital in 2013. She was an aide worker for syrian children, and she was kidnapped by isis and tortured, raped, and ultimately killed in isis captivity and brutalized by this man, this very man. This is someone who has been a top target of the americans for some time. If he, indeed, was killed in this air strike, how does it change, one wonders, diana, the leadership of isis . Reporter well, that is the big question, to what extent has he sort of abrogated responsibility to those below him . Is there, to a certain extent, a cult for isis that he has permeated throughout the organization, a culture of brutality that we saw in the attacks on yazidis, in the enslavement of populations that isis captured, and that is a hard sort of culture to eradicate from his many isis fighters, but there is a leadership that is not just controlled by baghdadi but i think you can be sure will perpetuate, even if he has been killed. Al qaeda, too, has managed to continue even with the death of osama bin laden. So, you can be sure that isis will reincarnate in some form, if, indeed, this man has been killed, that his brutality has been sort of perpetuated through the lower ranks. But exactly as to the sort of succession, leadership succession, that is unclear. Christine . Many knew, or know, until this is confirmed, al baghdadi as the invisible sheikh, again, pointing to the point that he has been invisible. Very in stark contrast to al zarqawi, who was killed in 2006 by a u. S. Bombing. If theres success from al baghdadi, it was in recruiting thousands of young jihadis. Any answer to why he was so successful recruiting to the worlds most despicable Terror Organization . Reporter i think he was benefited by the age in which he lived, the era of social media, an incredibly powerful media machine that he generated within isis, and that has been the tool that has made isis stand apart from other terrorist groups in modern times, in comparison to al qaeda. It has managed to recruit through these incredibly powerful recruitment videos and bring in foreign fighters from across the middle east and across the west also, and that is something that al baghdadi clearly understood extremely well, how to make isis not just an incredibly brutal organization in terms of its capabilities on the ground, its capabilities in capturing territory in iraq and syria, but in pushing that message out through social media, through the power of isis incredibly brutal, violent propaganda to willing recruits all around the world. Dave . Let me read to you what sputnik is reporting. Thats englishlanguage, staterun, Russian Media. They say this isis leader may have been killed alongside other leaders of the Extremist Group and 350 terrorists. This was in a Russian Air Force strike in syria, they report, on may 28th. The Defense Ministry saying that it was a military Council South of raqqah in Northern Syria on may 28th they were targeting. They say, again, this leader, Abu Bakr Al Baghdadi, and 330 terrorists. I guess we wont have exact confirmation. This was may 28th was a couple weeks ago twoplus weeks ago, yeah. So, i guess at what point, i wonder, when well get some real confirmation here. It has been, diana, i mean, hoped for that this guy would be taken out for some time. And there had been rumors before that he has been struck. Reporter there have. There have been numerous reports before that al baghdadi has been killed, and thats why the russians are being quite careful before they definitively say that he has. It would make sense for him to be in raqqah. That original video that youre talking about in mosul, that was his home base. Thats where he started out. But mosul, of course, is at the brink of falling as a result of this Long Campaign by iraqi forces. It is no surprise that isis has been pushed out of iraq and towards raqqah, which was always its base in syria. But because of the onslaught on raqqah, they seem to have been squeezed out. And what Russian Media is saying is that this was a meeting at a command post in the south of the city where al baghdadi, apparently, and also other commanders, were trying to work out how to filter the remaining isis fighters out of raqqah as the onslaught from russian airpower and also from Coalition Air strikes continues. So, it would make sense if, perhaps, there was a gathering of highlevel isis leaders. They also say around 300 isis middlemen who were killed in this air strike. If that number of people were killed, it must have been a very, very significant air strike, but it would make sense for them to be there, to be discussing how to get people out of raqqah and down towards darazur and palmira, where theyre escaping from attack by syrian and russian forces. To your great point, that his success in recruiting was because they had used social media, unfortunately, so well. Where would we look for some acknowledgement from isis that this is, in fact, true . Have they been announcing credit for these terrorist activities via twitter, via facebook, or where will we look for some sort of announcement . Reporter there are sites that isis uses to put out its messages, and those are specific sites that isis watchers go to. There is also the beat, which is of course its magazine where it will put announcements out. I imagine that isis, too, will be very hesitant about actually coming out and confirming the death of al baghdadi, if he has, indeed, been killed. It will be a major blow, both in reputational terms, if you will, for isis, and it will be interesting to see whether they do, in fact, come out on one of those platforms and confirm his death, if the russians do end up confirming it. Diana magnay for us this morning. Again, staterun media in russia saying al baghdadi Abu Bakr Al Baghdadi, the leader of isis, may have been killed in an air strike on may 28th. That, of course, does not apply to the man in the oval office, President Trump. He made his views perfectly clear throughout the day on thursday, from morning until evening, going after the investigation, calling it a witch hunt. He called it a phony investigation. And then he went after Hillary Clinton herself in a series of messages on social media, saying what about her dealings with russia . It certainly underscores the challenge here and the frustration in the minds of the president Going Forward as this russia investigation goes forward, and it is widening, indeed. Democrats and republicans putting unity on display at the annual congressional baseball game. It comes in the wake of wednesdays shooting rampage aimed at the Republican Team. How deep unity runs, how long it lasts, well, thats anybodys guess, but lawmakers efforts at last nights yearly congressional game were certainly a good start. Just a day after the shooting that injured six, including Louisiana Republican steve scalise, lawmakers huddled in prayer at second base, the position scolese was playing when he was shot. House Speaker Paul Ryan and Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi both wearing louisiana gear in scalises honor. Speaking to cnn, the Top Republican and democrat tried to project a message of unity. Tonight were all team scalise. What were trying to do is tone down the rhetoric, lead by example, and show people we can disagree with one another, we can have different ideas without being vitriolic, without going to such extremes. The game started with a very special ceremonial first pitch thrown by Capitol Police special agent david bailey, who was injured in that attack. President trump recorded a special video message, shown on the jumbo tron before the game. In washington, we have our disagreements, but we all agree that we are here to serve this nation we love. On this special night, i leave you with three Great American words that for generations have torn down barriers, built bridges of unity, and defied those who have sought to pull us apart. Ladies and gentlemen, lets play ball. As for the game, turned out to be an easy win for democrats, who walked over the gop team, 112, but when democrats were presented with the winning trophy, they turned right around and gave it back to the Republican Team so it could sit in congressman scalises office. Nearly 25,000 tickets were sold to the game, first played in 1909. They raised 1 million for charity. Great. Yeah, thats great. 50,000 of that came in a form of a check presented by ivanka trump and treasury secretary Steve Mnuchin on behalf of the friends in the trump administration. Meantime, doctors say scalise has improved, though he remains in critical condition. He underwent a second surgery thursday to repair internal injuries and a broken bone in his leg. Officials say scalise will require further operations, will remain in the hospital for some time. We wish all of them well as they heal and get past this terrible event. Because the time to think about tomorrow is today. This is cnn breaking news. Breaking this morning has the leader of isis been killed in a russian air strike . Moscow is investigating. We are there live. Major news this morning. Welcome back to early start, everybody. Im dave briggs. And im christine romans. Its 32 minutes past the hour. Breaking news this morning, isis leader Abu Bakr Al Baghdadi may have been killed in a russian air strike. Russian state media says moscow is investigating that possibility. These reports say al baghdadi, seen here in one of the few video clips of him known, hes in mosul in july of 2014 in these pictures. He may have been killed in a russian air strike last month. Our cnn correspondent diana magnay is live in moscow with the breaking details. And i know i mean, im reading some of this on the englishlanguage sputnik news agency. Theyre investigating whether a may 28th news strike targeted him with a lot of other isis leadership. What do we know . Reporter thats right. Well, russian state media is quoting the Defense Ministry as saying that it is investigating with information that suggests that he was killed in a meeting south of raqqah with a lot of other isis operatives are true, and the reports are that al baghdadi was killed in a russian air strike alongside some 330 other isis operatives as they were at a command post talking about creating an escape route, if you will, to the south of the city to darazur and palmira, which is cities where isis has allegedly fled to. They are investigating whether the reports are true. There is no confirmation at this stage. And it will certainly be interesting what evidence the russians come up with to prove 100 that it was al baghdadi who was killed in this air strike, especially if, as is being reported in russian state media, there were another 330 isis operatives killed in the same air strike. And of course, christine, weve had numerous reports of al baghdadi being killed in the past, so that is why the russians are being careful to couch this one and saying we are looking to verify information. So, it will be interesting, as i said, to see what evidence they do come up with, if they can definitively prove that he was killed and it was by their air strike. Diana, christine made mention of this video were seeing on the screen now, the only known video of the man some call the invisible sheikh. Back in july 2014, a sermon he delivered in mosul. Only two photographs have ever been known to have been taken of him. If you could give us some context, though, on just how significant this killing, if confirmed, would be, just why and how he is so dangerous. Reporter well, if you think of how isis was built up under his leadership, he created it into this fighting force that took so much territory through iraq and syria and managed to recruit foreign fighters from across the middle east and across the west into isis ranks and make it into this Formidable Fighting force that has been so hard to counter. That said, isis is now very, very much on the back foot. Mosul is practically its just the last few neighborhoods that iraqi forces are trying to recapture from isis. The majority of isis fighters who havent been killed have fled out of mosul, back into syria, towards raqqah. And actually, the onslaught on raqqah, which started in the last few weeks, has been far more effective than we might have assumed. Isis appears to have been fairly effectively routed from the city, and theyre being pushed south. So, it certainly is in its final stages with quite a few of the top isis leadership killed. But that growth was, you know, of isis as a terrorist force and as a force that was able to occupy a substantial amount of land, that was all baghdadis doing, so he is a major, major figure, the most wanted terrorist in the world, if you will. And if he was killed, that is, of course, a very big deal. And the brutality of his methods have been well documented torture, rape, public executions, crucifixions, i mean, paraded in front of the cameras, broadcast on social media. The american aide worker, kayla mueller, who was kidnapped in 2013 coming out of a Doctors Without Borders hospital, kidnapped, tortured, and ultimately died in captivity. He personally tortured her. This is someone, the yazidi people i mean, the list of atrocities is just too long to recite here, diana. Reporter it is. And it was a culture that he managed to, you know, permeate throughout his fighting forces. And it is a culture of indescribable brutality, torture, as you say, what youve listed was everything that came from his command as well as ordering this kind of horrific killing and torture and brutality against shia muslims, against muslims as well. You know, his brutality really did know no boundaries. In contrast, perhaps, to al qaeda, who shied away from the kind of brutality that isis is known for. And it will be interesting to see what, if he does go, how isis manages to continue. As i said, there has been just a few days ago another senior isis leader, al binali, killed around raqqah, and the organization of this network has been really demolished by the assault on isis in iraq and in syria, and in syria, of course, not just by the coalition, but russian airpower and Syrian Ground forces, too. And i think its important to mention in that context that over the last few weeks, russia has been very much saying we are the ones who are fighting terrorism, we are, our air support is supporting Syrian Ground troops as they battle isis, al nusra and other terrorist groups in syria. And the russians are saying, actually, Coalition Forces have been much more intent on targeting Syrian Ground troops and on waging war against assad than they have in fighting the terrorists. So, if russia does provide evidence to prove that they managed to kill al baghdadi, they win a major propaganda victory. No doubt there. Many have questioned whose side russia is on in the ongoing war in syria. Primarily, was social media the tool by which al baghdadi was able to grow this organization and recruit thousands of jihadis . Reporter i think to a very large extent, if you look at the growth of isis. And at the time when isis was growing when there was an explosion of social media, it absolutely benefited the group, and al baghdadi was quick to recognize how to exploit social media for his own benefit and to create propaganda, outlets within media, branches within isis that put together unbelievably slick propaganda videos, which looked as if they had been done by any kind of professional organization. You know, there is the isis news agency. He wanted to establish isis as a state that was in control of territory, that had its own administrations, that had its own very, very effective media campaign. And the message that he broadcast through social media with these incredibly slick propaganda videos, managed to bring in huge numbers of recruits from across the middle east and from across the world to isis ranks. But that said, isis has been very much on the back foot in the last few months because of the forces battling it in iraq and syria. Again, the news, if youre just tuning in, we are learning the russian state media is saying it is investigating whether that man on your screen, Abu Bakr Al Baghdadi, the leader of isis, has been killed in an air strike, may 28th, by a russian air strike. You know, diana, there have been rumors of his demise before. This sounds like the russians are seriously investigating this. Reporter it does sound as if theyre seriously investigating this. Its possible that he was in the surroundings of raqqah. You know, it is highly likely that isis leaders would have fled iraq, given the state of the battle around mosul, that they would go up to syria, but it is also questionable whether he would have been so close to raqqah. I mean, raqqah is the focus of Coalition Air strikes right now, of Ground Forces onslaught. This supposedly, according to russian state media, happened, the air strike happened at a command post south of the city. And russian state media is also saying that some 330 other isis fighters were killed in these same air strikes. Now, that does raise questions as to what al baghdadi was doing at such a major meeting, which would have been an obvious target. Would he necessarily have been so close to raqqah, although we dont know how close that was, and would he have been in the safer areas that arent so much the focus of the fight right now . So, there are still many questions, and it would depend on what evidence the russians are able to put before the world to prove that they did, indeed, kill this man. Diana magnay live for us in moscow. Thanks so much. Thanks, diana. Well check in with you soon. Always a word of caution with any reports out of russia.
