And im john berman. Great to sigh. Its wednesday, march 12th, 5 00 a. M. In the east. We have new developments and frankly new confusion. The only fact that anyone seems to agree on its missing for five days with 239 people on board. Search crews this morning seem to be fanning out over an even wider area trying to find this jet that simply disappeared. But there is conflicting information about where it went. A senior Malaysian Air force official had told cnn it appeared the plane may have strayed hundreds of miles off course. Others, though, are new refuting this information. Saying its not clear what happened. The latest briefing from officials there is just about to get under way. I want to get to Nic Robertson with the very latest on this investigation. Nic, and what seems to be, again, just flatout conflicting information . Reporter we certainly seem to voluntary a sense of that have the vietnamese. The plane was flying past vietnam, passing through vietnam airspace when it apparently, probably, according to the sources we have, made a turn back towards malaysia. The vietnamese say they have insufficient information from the malaysian authorities. They only had official contact one. That they dont get to talk to senior officials. And right now, theyre scaling back their search which focuses more of the efforts on the Malacca Strait which is where we understand the plane had reached after making that almost uturn in the sky. And flying back across malaysia disappearing at 2 40 a. M. The Prime Minister in malaysia is calling for families to be patient. I understand the government is doing everything to pray to god and to be united and all of this. But it does seem that the military at this stage, the air force in particular, the air force chief, coming out and saying that he hadnt spoken to journalist, and given specifics about how the plane had possibly turned around and gone back. And it does seem that he is pointing to the government to follow their lead on this, as if theres some disagreement within the malaysian authorities about who should take the lead on the information here. Hes lanning the government not the military. And it does seem again when we listen to the vietnamese does highlight the amount of confusion about where this plane is, which is of course exacerbated by the fact nothing has been found so far, john. Nic, theyre asking people including the families to be patient. I imagine its hard to be patient when there is this confusion. And it does raise questions about whether the malaysians simply have their act together in this search . You know, there have certainly been other incidents around the world. And we can think of the westgate terrorist attack, for example in kenya, were there were for a number of days conflicting information coming from the government. A huge apartment of pressure has been placed on the malaysian authorities here. And it does seem internally, they dont appear to have a strong mechanism to get out the information in a way that they want to get it out. The information they provide lags the facts on the ground. The search was under way for several days in the straits of malacca before reporters and the rest of the world were provided information that the flight might have actually turned around and been over the straits of malacca when it disappeared. So it certainly seems that the government at the moment is struggling to get its message out and control whats going on here. And that only leads to this frustration from the families that theyre not getting enough information. But when we hear from people like the vice transport minister in vietnam saying theyre not getting enough information, theyve only had one official contact with malaysian authorities. And they were a major part of the search. Lets remember that in the beginning. It does point up that there is a paucity of useful information for all of those involved. And again, the plane has been missing for five days and the facts are they seem to be no closer to finding where it went. Nic robertson covering the story. Thanks so much, nic. All right. This morning, the drai is denying a shocking allegation that it spied on Senate Staffers and even took documents off of their computers. Senate intelligence chair Dianne Feinstein took to the senate floor on tuesday to make the claim that cia spies went into those computers without authorization. As the staffers worked on a report about the agencys controversial prison interrogation programs. I have grave concerns that the cias search may well have violated the separation of powers principles embodied in the United States constitution. Nothing could be further from the truth. When the facts come out on this, i think a lot of people who are claiming that there has been this tremendous sort of spying and monitoring and hacking will be proved ong. Senator Lindsey Graham says if its proven that the cia has interfered with a congressional investigation, senator Lindsey Graham says someone should go to jail. Happening today on capitol hill, the top u. S. Commander in afghanistan is set to discuss the future of forces in that nation. General dunn is likely to address the upcoming election there and what the u. S. Will do if afghanistan will not sign off in an agreement to keep u. S. Troops in place. Also, canada marks the end of its mission in afghanistan. The last canadian troops are expected to be out of there by the end of the week. New details on who is signing up for obamacare. The government says the enrollment is now 4. 25 Million People and now a quarter of them are younger adults. President obama is doing interviews with zach galifianakis. And looking into a huge General Motors recall and whether the automaker was criminally liable for not disclosing it earlier. Last month, gm declared and recalled 1. 4 million cars. Gm is conducting its own review, as is a senate committee. A guilty plea expected today from a Credit Suisse banker accused of hiding billions of dollars. There is growing confusion over what happened to Malaysia Airlines flight 370. Its missing five days with 239 people on board. No idea where this flight is. Search crews fanning out over a wider area today after a malaysian official told cnn radar shows the 777 was hundreds of miles off course. Hundreds are denying that is true. No one seems to know when that it. Simon is live in kualoala laual. Still no signs of this wreckage or site. Great confusion where it was even last recorded, sima. Reporter yes, absolutely, a lot of confusion from our end. A lot of confusion coming from the officials monitoring our situation. A massive search operation has been expanded. Instead of narrowing it down to a specific carrier where they believe this plane could possibly have been headed to. Theyre now expanding the operation. This press conference getting under way. As a matter of fact, walking past me right now is the head of the Civil Aviation authority here in malaysia. Were expecting him to speak any moment here as well. Were waiting to hear from the defense ministry, too, as to what exactly happened to flight mh370. As you say, not a lot of clarity. Were getting information perhaps a day or two after we believe its been confirmed. First, we had a lot of confusion over these stolen passports. Who were these people. What were they doing on board. There were fears link to terrorism. Thens are of course, we in fact heard they were not connected to that in any kind of way. By the way, that frustration, brimming over into the loved ones, relatives of people on board who are still missing five days on. I went and spoke to some of their family members today. A young man whose brothers, two of them, its elder brother and younger brother on board that plane. He spoke of their sadness. Their deep sadness and their young children, 10 years old, 4 years old, 1yearold, asking wheres daddy . When are they going to come home . One of their wives was there as well, too distraught to talk. Too distraught to speak. She was in tears. Back to you. And they have no clues yet about where that plane went or what happened to their loved ones. Saima, thank you. You keep looking at that plane taking that left turn. That is in dispute. The Administration Says enrollment through february is now 3. 4 million. About a quarter of signups are young adults. The trend is pointing upwards but doesnt seem like its pointing upwards fast enough to reach the 7 Million People the government wanted to have signed up by the end of the march. Stocks are lower in asia. U. S. Futures trying to hold steady this morning. Big losses in hong kong and china led to worldwide selling all week. Stocks in europe the dow down more than 100 points this week. This after two consecutive weeks of gains. We saw more than 2 gain on the dow for those twoks. Backtoback for the s p 500 target seeing a drop in customer traffic following the huge Security Breach at the end of the last year. And then weve seen the bat trying to establish the angle by which the cricket bat hit the door. And what were also seeing is the state trying to prove. Or at the beginning of trying to prove that Oscar Pistorius had his prosthetic legs off. That he was on his stump bhs he was trying to hit this bat against the door. And, of course, this goes against his statement, his affidavit during that bail hearing that he had his legs on. So what were seeing is the beginnings of an understanding of what the states narrative is going to be, around all of this physical evidence of course, remember, this forensic expert hasnt yet been crossexamined. And, of course, pistorius own legal team will interpret the same physical evidence perhaps una different framework and a different way. This is very much the beginning of a long process. For everybody in court, and of course, for the judge, this is the first time weve seen the door and cricket bat. Playing out the forensic case here will be key.
