Every state and territory will have now at least a threeweek window to know how many vaccines are coming to plan appropriately, send it to states so more vaccines get in the peoples arms and expectations met and the second thing we learned is we did not have enough vaccines contracted to give everybody that needs a vaccine a vaccine. Wf taken care of that today. We are still learning as we go along. Supply question. Like three days ago fids pfizer and moderna said they didnt have anymore. What changed . How were they able to ramp up production suddenly . Pfizer announced this morning they will be ahead of schedule. I think they announced to push forward a couple of months so we think theyll beat their initial schedule. Look. Some of this is just plain old daytoday execution and management. This is a daunting task for everybody. For states, for the pharmaceutical companies, for the people distributing the vaccines and most of all for americans who are patiently and growing out of patience waiting to get vaccinated. Getting our hands around this is our first priority. We have just been here a week but we have been able to find some opportunities. Youre not curious how they changed the project in a short period like that . What happened . Did they add workers . Giving a vaccine to america they had for another country . No, i dont think so. I think some of this is planned for in the case of moderna, you know, we have been working with them. They have a planned ramp. They didnt ramp as i think many in the public including me were led to believe and biluilding. Theyre still ramping up. I wish it were different but this is the situation we inherited and we are working with them. And then once it gets to states the states have a job to do. They have to work to get the vaccines out. Help me understand that. Look. It is good that they need more vaccine. Okay . It is bad you cant give it to them right away but you have to do better than before you. I dont understand how the rates dont reflect the urgency for more supply. So the rates are on average i think 53 of what they have. Theyre putting in peoples arms and a range of low 30s. Why do they have more . What am i missing . The states are doing better. This is a new process for them and theres a lot of variability. I think our view unlike the past administration is well try to provide assistance wherever states struggling. There are best practices out there. Not every state is probably using best practices. Another point to make, two other points, the first one is that so essential that the Congress Pass the American Rescue plan which is essentially the money and the resources state need. This is an orchestra. It is not a solo act. And then the final thing ill say is we have an important goal to make sure that the vaccines get into peoples arms equitably and well send vaccines to churches and mobile clinics and may take a couple days longer but people of colors and those in rural areas have access. You know we have vaccine inequality going on just like with covid. We discussed many times, the people most vulnerable were getting the most sick, they still are, the largest percentage of essential workers and now with the vaccine the same people are getting screwed again and i look forward to the steps. It is good to message it that way. Letss see the actions that make it different. So now the federal government is saying we looked at the data. It is good. We should be able to go back to schools. The people that track the data in schools say how do you know that . The federal government has ptd had a system to look at the numbers. So much variability around the states. You get different stories from different communities. How do you know its safe to go back . I think you are referring to a statement from the cdc, yeah. Instead of the just federal government we are used to the federal government being a sort of one entity and the white house controls the messaging. The president is very clear with us and with the country that science is going to dictate what we do and the cdc speaks for itself and the cdcs findings are based on the study i think we saw today that schools actually may be safer than we once thought based on what they have said so giveren that and given the president s goal to be getting americans back to school, kids back to school, k8 in person and 812, as well, as quickly as possible is potentially good news and will wait and let the cdc speak for yooits and i dont want the white house to get into a habit of contradicting or commenting on the science as it comes out and will let them do it. I just want to know what their confidence is coming from because, look, i got three everybody wants the kids back in school. The question has been how. If nothing changed in terms of resources given schools and the able to giver teachers, should teachers be vaccinated sooner . What i do want to do is i want to point back to the congress again because they have the resources to get schools safer, to get testing into schools, to help schools become modernized and up dated. If we want our kids back to school then we need the congress to act on the American Rescue plan. Absolutely. You have to think about the vaccination part. The teachers have to get vaccinated sooner if you will have everybody else back in person, right . No question. Teachers are a high priority and one of the many reasons working to get vaccines into the states and doctors offices as quickly as possible. The states listen to you if they want the vaccine. They have to take care of the people most at risk, deal with minorities where theyre underserviced and let the teachers have a chance not to bring things back to their families. I thought it was a great conversation. Obviously governors across the country want more, more vaccines. What we need the most, though, is predictability and communication and transparency. So this is a welcomed change from where we have been. The fact that there is a plan to ramp up gives me great peace. Of course, it is not as fast as we all want but we are feeling better about where we are headed as a nation that theres a National Strategy to help us as states to get people protected. 16 is not enough. Fair point . You know what . It is welcome information and change and trajectory and i think thats what were craving the most. Its been so sporadic and little information. When we found out there wasnt even vaccines that were being held back, despite what the representations were from the last administration, this is a welcomed change. Transparency and a plan to move forward. Were they able to tell you when it will be more than 16 . Well, they said were going to have three weeks where we can be confident what the numbers are. That helps us with the planning and hope it will continue to ramp up and i believe it will. I know that the administration announced to make purchases of vaccines, that is something we were asking the last administration to do and for some reason they wouldnt do it. It is happening now and i think that gives all of us great confidence and reason to feel hopeful. Your numbers have been going up on the vaccine. You are now at about 67 of doses administered. Two weeks ago it was 45 . What makes the difference in efficiency . Well, we have made incredible strides. We are working closely with the local Health Departments and the hospital systems. Part of the issue is that in the Long Term Care setting those vooebs are administered directly the pharmacies and we dont control those and we have seen the numbers not keeping up with what we are doing as a state but i think it is communication, the ability to plan and so well see the numbers continue to improve. We are seventh best in the country now. Well keep moving to get everyone i knock lated as fast as possible. The thing you need most is the vaccine. You dont need manpower, logistical help. Whats the wants . The vaccine. The administration said theyll fund the National Guard, thats something that was an unknown under the last administration. They funded the guard in some states but not all. We are all going to have that benefit and we are really utilizing our National Guard in terms of manpower on the ground and so thats made a big difference in michigan, too. Controversial issue. Some governors like you said i learned from ppe. Get me get the vaccine myself. Let me cut the deals and assure the flow. The Biden Administration says, no. Do you accept the answer . And why . I do. The reason that we were working so hard to try to purchase vaccines is we werent getting information out of the administration and didnt have confidence they bought the vaccines for the nation. They had not done the work and we saw eventually they came clean and said they didnt have second doses they had been holding back despite what the representations were. This administration is a very different situation. The theyre working with us. Theyre doing the planning. I have great faith in the National Strategy that the Biden Administration is, you know, working and so i dont feel the need to say, let me go buy this because i believe this administration is doing all the right things and im gradeful for it. Do you reserve the right to sue if they do not give you what you need . I believe that the Biden Administration is going to deliver. I know that theyre listening to the same experts that we have been listening to here in michigan. We have some of the best numbers in the country right now in terms of pushing our covid rates down. Because we have been following the science and so this administration i think is going to show they know how to get this under control, get our economy back ramped up, get the kids back in school and what we need as a nation need more than anything. Is it better now that the election is over . What is your level of concern about infiltration of these groups into your officials . Well, i think that this has been a serious issue and we in michigan saw it earlier. When was happening at the nations capitol, this started the first time we saw this was here in this state eight months prior. It ended up culminating in a clash to kidnap and murder me. This is a very real threat. This is domestic terrorism and we all, every one of us who has a platform, needs to take a stand. This is unacceptable and a very real threat that continues. It might not be as scary in this moment. We have seen a lot less of it recently. Hour, it is still there and it is still something that we need to take seriously as a nation. You worry about it in your ranks, how its penetrated into different agencies or peeople wo work around for with you . We are fmindful of the nations lessons. We see that in the Republican Party in michigan, there are leader who is are part of that demonstration and insurrection at the United States capitol and so this is something thats entrenched in certain parts of our society and we need to root it out. It is unacceptable and dangerous and undermines the democracy and that should come before any other allegiance.
