Hello and welcome to our viewers joining us here in the United States and all around the world. You are watching cnn newsroom and im rosemary church. Just ahead, the push to reopen the u. S. Is raising concern inside and outside the white house as staffers test positive for the coronavirus. Parts of europe ease restrictions but already some are seeing infections on the rise and new outbreaks in asia, including the original epicenter. A warning that no one can be too vigilant. Good to have you with us. The numbers look grim. In the u. S. Nearly 80,000 people have died from the coronavirus. That is according to Johns Hopkins university. Thats not stopping u. S. President donald trump from pushing the states to reopen. Take a look at this map. It shows coronavirus cases are still rising in some states and the new university of washington model projects more than 137,000 people will die from covid19 by august. Mr. Trumps personal valet and Vice President mike pences spokeswoman have tested positive for the virus. Three top u. S. Health officials are selfquarantining but pence plans to be at the white house in the coming hours, that is according to his staff. This week europe is starting to emerge from its lockdown. Spain, france, italy, germany are easing some of their harshest restrictions. British Prime MinisterBoris Johnson is changing the slogan from stay at home to stay alert. The new cases are being reported in china and south korea where the outbreaks were thought to be largely under control. White house correspondent Jeremy Diamond has more now on why Vice President pence is not selfquarantining. Reporter well, Vice President mike pences office on sunday saying that the Vice President will not enter selfquarantine after his press secretary tested positive on thursday. Vice president pence will continue to follow the advice of the white house medical unit and is not in quarantine. He has tested negative every single day and plans to be at the white house tomorrow, that is on monday the Vice President is expected, indeed, to be at the white house. Certainly not selfquarantine. His decision is in contrast from what were seeing from three of the doctors on the task force. Dr. Robert redfield, dr. Steven hahn and dr. Anthony fauci, the governments top Infectious Disease expert all three of them entering some form of selfquarantine for the next two weeks after they came into contact with a white house official who tested positive with the coronavirus. Their announcements came within 24 hours of the news that katie miller, the Vice President s press secretary, who was also a spokesperson for the task force had indeed tested positive. Certainly some differences here in the approach and that is kind of the thing that were seeing from the white house, a miss matched piecemeal approach of what they should do. Certainly the Vice President has spent far more time with katie miller than any of these other officials on the task force. The white house declining to say whether any other officials on the task force or any other white house officials in frequent meetings with the Vice President s press secretary, whether they will also work from home and enter some kind of quarantine. What we are also learning is that those three officials who are going into quarantine, they were set to testify before the Senate Health committee on tuesd tuesday. Those officials will go forward with their testimony. Three of them will appear via video. Jeremy diamond, cnn, the white house. Meanwhile, president trumps Economic Advisor said working in the west wing of the white house can be risky for ones health saying the building is a little old and under ventilated. Take a listen. I knew when i was going back in that i would be taking risks that i would be safer sitting at home at my house than going into a west wing that even with all the testing in the world and the best medical team on earth is a relatively cramped place. He said he wears a mask when he feels its appropriate. Joining me now from cambridge, massachusetts, the director of the Harvard Global health institute. Thank you for being with us. Thank you for having me on. Two staffers have tested positive with covid19. Katie millers husband is a Senior Advisor to the president , steven miller, yet neither the president nor the Vice President intend to quarantine themselves. They will be at the white house on monday. Three senior medical professionals on the Coronavirus Task force do intend to quarantine themselves. It is a mixed message for the nation coming from the very top. What are the optics with quarantining and not Wearing Masks . The evidence on this and the guidance on this are very, very clear. The cdc this administrations own cdc has made recommendations based on the evidence and based on that, certainly the Vice President should be quarantining himself and possibly also the president. But both of them should be Wearing Masks. Its a good way to keep each other safe. Its a good way to keep staff safe and its also a very important leadership signal but theyve chosen not to do it. I think its unfortunate. Right. Daily testing is now done at the white house because of this. Im sure the safety of the president and all those around him. Why arent we seeing extensive testing across the nation not on a daily basis but for those who want to get tested or for anyone showing symptoms or not showing symptoms. Asymptomatic cases, just as they they pose just as big a test. Why have it at the white house but not elsewhere in any useful way along with Contact Tracing . Isnt that another mixed message from the top . Yeah, absolutely. This has been stunning to me. The white house has been suggesting we have enough testing in the u. S. , Everybody Knows we do not. They keep saying we need more testing, yet when they face dangers themselves, they have daily testing of all their staff. Now i believe that protecting the president and Vice President are very important. I think frequent testing is good, but its not just good for them, its good for all of us. When theyre telling america we should open up, then to say that you dont need testing but they do is very much a mixed message and a real problem. The key coronavirus model projects 137,000 u. S. Deaths by august as states see a rising ability. Thats the projected death toll. How many more people will likely die beyond that date as this country rushes to get back to business without this sufficient testing in place . Yeah. That model has been consistently wrong in being too conservative. I believe its going to be wrong by being too conservative even by the end of august. Well see more than 130,000 deaths. I hope im wrong. Im worried that thats the case. Of course the epidemic will not be over by the end of august and we are all expecting many more cases into the fall and winter. This i think kind of a real mismanagement by the federal government means that hundreds of thousands of americans will end up dieing. That was unnecessary and badly managed. What hopes and expectations do you have Going Forward tort vaccine and any possible antiviral treatment for covid19 . Yeah. So there i am actually much more optimistic. Even on the testing and tracing which has been such a debacle. Were starting to make Real Progress because states have gotten involved and states are really doing the work that usually we expect from the federal government. But on vaccines, theres a lot of hype. I dont think were going to have a vaccine in 2020. I think that would be extremely unlikely. I can imagine one in 2021. Middle of 2021. That would be great. Between now and then im hoping well have a lot of antiviral therapies that wont stop the pandemic but will make it less deadly and that will be extremely helpful. That is nice to have a positive note there. Its worth pointing out that pandemic warnings from scientific experts go back as far as 15 years ago. Why didnt nations particularly like the u. K. Protect themselves . Why arent they taking it seriously even in the midst of this pandemic . The warnings have been around for quite a long time. Certainly in the last decade the warnings by Public Health experts have gotten louder and louder. Theres this belief that if you ignore t it will never happen, it will go away. Thats been the way that many of the people, many of the leaders in western countries, u. S. , many western European Countries have treated this pandemic hoping it goes away. Pan dem mix dont just go away. They take a while and, second, it kills a lot of people. I think communities in the u. S. , u. K. , other European Countries are starting to take this seriously. Theyve been very slow and unfortunately that has meant a lot of people have gotten sick and died. Always a pleasure to talk with you. Many thanks. Thanks for having me on. British Prime MinisterBoris Johnson laid out his reopening plan in a televised address sunday. He said those who cant work from home should return to their jobs and he loosened restrictions. Johnson said he wants to relieve economic pressure but keep new cases down. I know, you know it would be madness to throw away that achievement by allowing a second spike. We must stay alert. We must continue to control the virus and save lives. So lets get the latest now from london. Phil black is at 10 downing street. Good morning, phil. How is this new plan going to work and whats been the reaction across the u. K. . Reporter yeah. Theres a hunger, i think, for details on this, rosemary, because the british people have been presented with a very broad plan, a very general path forward for taking steps out of lockdown. There is not a clear indication of precisely how this will work, not even in the first tentative steps. Another clear break in policy or clear new direction. As he said himself, its merely a change in emphasis where the rules up until now have been work from home if you can, go to work if you must. Hes saying if you can go to your workplace, well, you should do that. There is an active encouragement to get people back into their workplace. There is no idea precisely how that would work on an industry by industry, sector by sector, workplace by workplace. Thats what people need in order to feel safe to return to their workplace after several months of being told to stay home. This will begin to get the economy moving at least a little to begin with and then perhaps down the track there can be further steps. The Prime Minister talked about at the start of june some School Classes could reopen, some shops could reopen in a phased way. He talked about june and moving into july perhaps some of the Hospitality Industry could open. That is the broader plan but, as i said, we have not yet received the clear instructions from government about how thats going to work on a granular level in each workplace. Thats what people really want to know in order to feel safe. On the positive side, they received some information which i think will improve peoples quality of life. That is, theyre allowed to spend time outdoors. There are no restrictions in terms of exercise, going to the park, the beach, going to a beauty spa. People can do this without any time restrictions or limits as long as they confine themselves to members of their household. If they meet up with other people, social distancing has to be observed. Consolation there. Great deal of uncertainty about how the practical opening of the economy and workplaces is really going to work. Rosemary . Thank you so much. Phil black joining us there from london. And you are watching cnn newsroom. That estimates how many people a sick person infects with the coronavirus. In germ pla aany that has reach indicating infections are on the rise. The federal Public Health agency says its too early to draw conclusions. Chancellor Angela Merkel said restrictions can be imposed if need be. Spain is keeping restrictions. More than half the country can visit restaurants and small stores. The government is easing the strict lockdown. Al goodman is in madrid. Good to see you, al. Good to see the mask. While most of spain starts to lift restrictions gradually, thats not the case yet for madrid and barcelona. What do the numbers look like in those two cities . Reporter hi, rosemary. The numbers are everything. The numbers are the Health Indicators, the regions that are opening up this day, about 50 of the population in territories all over the country have the best Health Indicators according to the Spanish Government and experts. They have the lowest infection rates, their hospitals have enough icu beds and other facilities to handle any sort of second wave. Thats not the case in madrid and in barcelona and a couple of other cities around barcelona. Whats the difference . Over a 40 minute drive from where im standing in the provincial capital, theyre moving to phase one. 10 people who dont live together, people separated to avoid the infections, 10 people who dont live together, that could be relatives, your friends, you could meet. In guadelahara they could sit at an outdoor table like this, have a coffee, a beer. The stores are open. Up to 30 of store capacity. Here in madrid as you can see, no outdoor tables. No Restaurant Service except Takeout Service over here at this place. For stores, you still need an appointment to get Something Like i did on the weekend where i needed a light bulb. I had to make an appointment and they sent a text message so i could go over and pick up a light bulb. Theres a lot of complaints now. Pressures are building. The Prime Minister said the whole country was locked down at the same time, its not going to open up at the same time. The priority is to maintain the health, keep people safe, masked, social distancing so that there is not a second wave. Rosemary . That is critical and being led by the data and not by anything else. Al goodman bringing us that update. Many thanks to you. Well, as countries in europe start to reopen, children are now starting to return to school, but the classrooms will look entirely different once the students return. Melissa bell has more on how countries are doing it. Reporter some of those european citizens hardest hit by stay at home orders are finally getting back to something approaching normal. These teenagers in germany were returning to their School Building one by one. In Denmark Primary School children were the first in europe to get back to their classrooms on april 15th. Some less enthusiastically than others. Teaching staff facing a whole new set of challenges. We have soap, disinfectant all over the place. We have put lines in the floor to indicate two meters so children can see what is two meters. Reporter since the start of europes coronavirus outbreak in late february, italy, then spain, france, many other e. U. Countries gradually put in place stay at home orders and closed schools. Only now are many countries beginning to reopen. And crucial to getting parents back to work is getting their children back into class. In the netherlands the classrooms that will open monday will look very different. Here, as in france, some children have started early. Children of health care workers, for instance. This week other Primary School children will return to class on a voluntary basis and classes will be smaller so priority will be given to the children of essential workers. Translator too many children are deprived of school with no access to digital learning, they cannot be helped in the same way by their parents. Reporter as schools like this one gradually reopen their doors, it will be an important test. The government here has said it will not hesitate to bring in another stay at home order should the covid19 numbers rise once again. Can kids inside schools be kept safe from one another and are parents happy to sending them back . Im looking forward to them going back to school because i have to work. My husband is working also and its very complicated to work at home with kids. Translator we have asked for our children to go back to school but first children from disadvantaged backgrounds. Thats not our case. Since we work remotely, we are not a priority. Reporter many french School Children will have to wait, a reminder that closing down in march is easy but it is reopening that is harder even as the battle of the outbreak continues. President donald trump pushes to reopen states, the coronavirus has reached the white house striking its staff very close to mr. Trump. His personal valet and Vice President mike pepss spokeswoman have tested positive for the virus and three top u. S. Health officials are selfquarantining. His office says pence isnt and he plans to be at the white house over the coming hours. Meanwhile, parts of europe are cautiously reopening again, but in germany Coronavirus Infections are up after restrictions were eased last week. Mainland china is reporting 17 new cases of the coronavirus. Seven were imported cases and 10 were locally transmitted. Fresh lockdown mesh aurs were announced for shulan city. Five new cases are in wuhan, the original epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak. Wuhan had not reported a new case since april 3rd. Speaking of new cases, south korea reported its biggest single day jump in coronavirus cases since early april. At least 86 new cases are believed to be linked to seouls nightclub scene, and specifically one man who visited several establishments. Cnns Paula Hancocks is in seoul. She joins us live. South korea had been hailed a Great Success due to the handling of this pandemic. What more are you learning about the man behind this new spike in cases . Reporter well, rosemary, at this point officials are trying to track all of the people that would have been in this area over a twoweek period. This was a 29yearold man we understand that visited the nightclub district in seoul back on may 2nd and he went to a number of different clubs. Now according to officials, they have 5500 names that they are looking at at this point and they want to test all of those people to make sure that they can try and contain this outbreak. They say theyve tested more than 3,000 so far. Theyre still trying to trace some of the others. So far 86 confirmed cases have been linked to this individual. Now certainly Officials Say they are very concerned about this recent cluster and this recent outbreak. The seoul city mayor says the next two to three days will be critical in trying to contain this new outbreak. If seoul falls, the country falls. This is really the focus of this point. We heard from the south korean president moon jaein spoke about this saying its not over until its over. We cant let our guard down as experts have clearly said, that there will be a second wave. He said that second wave could be in the autumn or the winter according to experts, but there are clearly some concerns that we are seeing a second wave here now, rosemary. It is a wakeup call to all of us. Paula hancocks, thank you for that live update in seoul. Appreciate it. The Trump Administration announced starting this week the u. S. Will purchase 3 billion of dairy, meat, and produce and it couldnt have come at a better time for some communities. Cnns gary tuchman visited a family of hog farmers who are running out of food and money thanks to dwindling demand. Reporter alex haym is a sixth generation farmer. He, his wife and his father are proud hog farmers who are getting ready for a traumatizing experience. I never imagined having to do this. Reporter what they are going to do is a result of the closing of american pork plants. There is no place for these pigs to go. Each of these hogs should have been out of here two to three weeks ago, sent to market, but it looks like they never will. The decision has been made to humanely euthanize most if not all of them and that will happen this week. All of this minnesotas familys pigs go to one place but the smithfield facility was shut down with more than 800 covid cases linked to it. With so many plants closed and such a backlog of pigs, the haym family is desperate. Before covid19 they would typically send off about 700 hogs every week. They have 3500 ready to go and nowhere to send them. And these are the familys baby pigs. About 3,000 of them in an over crowded nursery barn that usually has around 2400. The fully grown pigs being euthanized by gunshot will leave room for the little ones as they get bigger, but the babies could face the same fate in a few months. Doc haym is the patriarch of the family. We put down sick pigs because you feel sorry for them. But to have a healthy pig, take a rifle and shoot it, its unreal. Reporter this family is saddened, but they are also financially stressed. They say whats made this all worse is their government. These trade wars for the last three years have just killed us. Reporter the hayms and many other hog farmers are desperate for assistance. If we dont get help i truly feel we are looking at bankruptcy. This is going to be the end of our family farm. Reporter even if they opened up quickly with all the employees coming back to work, which is not going to happen, including in smithfield where they reopened on monday with less than 1 10 of their original employees, there are many hogs backed up. A lot of people will not survive this. Reporter does this family see any realistic chance . No, but im surviving solely on hope. Reporter that may not be enough. Gary tuchman, cnn, minnesota. Well, after the u. S. Reported a record 20 million jobs lost in april, Trump Officials are warning the unemployment numbers could be even worse in may. Lets take a look at u. S. Futures as we begin a new week. Were seeing positive territory at least there. The dow futures up. 3 . All right. The trading day is wrapping up in asia so lets turn to cnns john deftarios. Hes tracking it live. Good to see you, john, from abu dhabi. Are stock Market Investors discounting the threat of the coronavirus near term and looking perhaps at a longer term recovery . Reporter yeah, i think its best described, rosemary, as dual worlds. Theres the clear and present danger of snap backs. At the same time investors saying, 6 to 9 months down the road whats life going to look like . Thats the predominant theme. We saw that on wall street on friday. We see that with futures. The european markets have opened slightly higher. Lets take a look at what we see in asia. Japan and hong kong seeing gains of 1 to 1. 5 . Not as enthusiastic in shanghai and south korea. China central bank in beijing is suggesting that its time to look more aggressively at a stimulus plan Going Forward. Certainly not the level we see in the United States which is 3 trillion. The debate on capitol hill, should we go back again. Steve mnuchin pushing back, should we go back a few weeks. Overall globally theres been 7 trillion allocated and there will be more to come am what we see in saudi arabia tripling the v. A. T. Or sales tax to 15 . Government subsidies being cut. Some of the major programs being put forward by the crown prince, mohamed bin salman. Because of things slowing down and the price of oil hovering around 30 a barrel. Elon musk is threatening to leave california unless he can reopen his factory quickly. Hows this likely to play out . Reporter i like the way you put that, flexing his muscle. Elon musk is seen as a entrepreneur, job creator and saying to Alameda County youre making a power grab because the governor is saying its time to ease manufacturing facilities back open. Tesla claims it put forward its plan for health and safety to the county and its slow to react and pushing back against tesla. California is very innovative as a state but onerous for regulations for health and safety, environmental regulations. Thats what musk is talking about. Hes suggesting, if you dont come my way, im looking at texas and nevada. He took a case to California Court in San Francisco hoping to push this open. Elon musk might be the beneficiary of a 700 million bonus if he hits targets in 2020. Thats why hes rushing to get his factories reopened, rosemary. Well watch to see what happens. Always a pleasure to chat with you. John deftarios from abu dhabi. Thanks. In china, shanghai disneyland is reopening after being closed for over three months. Its the first of disneys theme parks to reopen in limited capacity. Tickets were listed online on friday and sold out in minutes. Visitors must wear facemasks and follow other strict guidelines before they go in. Cnns david culver has more. Reporter its often referred to as the happiest place on earth, however, some of the leadership hire at shanghai disneyland say they are the most cautious place on earth as of now. They have reopened, albeit in a far limited capacity. Well under 30 which is the cap of capacity they had put. Theyre testing this out in many ways. They have a different procedure for folks coming in. For one, they require you to have the shanghai local qr code which tracks your contacts and prevents exposure to the virus. If you have a green one, they feel that they can assure folks that you are coming in and you are safe. They do temperature screenings. While were on an elevated platform. If you are on the ground going from attraction to attraction, you have to wear a facemask. When you get off they have several different Hand Sanitizer stations. Some staff go around with Hand Sanitizer to pump it into your hands. They are trying to reopen from a business perspective and maintain the health security. We spoke with the senior Vice President of operations at the park, he gave us an idea as to what else is changing here . Noticing that parade go by obviously at a distance but you can still see the characters. Yes. Not the big hug and high fives, right . Exactly. More of a selfie moment and take the moments. It gives the guests the ability to have the emotional emotion. Every other table or so has a table card which asks for the guests understanding for health and safety the table is unavailable. Were asking them not to sit here, sit there. It creates a separation. One of the things stressed there by andrew and some of the other leadership is that shanghai, arguably china is in a different place than the other parts of the world, particularly where the 11 parks are that disney owns and operates. They feel they can cautiously embark on this reopening. It takes a little bit of getting used to and its still that escape to find a little bit of joy in what has been a very dark period. Thats one of the things theyre trying to balance is the celebratory mood while at the same time respecting and acknowledging where the world is at. David culver, cnn, shanghai, disneyland. His death was filmed on cell phone video but no charges were filed for more than two months. Cnns Martin Savidge has all the new developments. We must warn you, his report contains graphic video. Reporter the Georgia Attorney general has now asked for the u. S. Department of justice to formally step in and do a thorough review of the entire case when it comes into the investigation of the death of Ahmaud Arbery. The reason for that is obvious. The fact that it took over two months for local Law Enforcement to look into this case and hardly anything happened and then you have state Law Enforcement officials come in and in less than two days they have made two arrests. The question that has come up in peoples minds is one of those who was arrested is gregory mcmichael. He worked as an investigator in the local office. Did they give some favored treatment to he and his son because of the work he used to do in the d. A. s office. Clearly thats one element that will be investigated. New video thats come to light. Not new to investigators, new to the public. What it essentially shows is Ahmaud Arbery on the day he died in the community where he was killed walking into a home that was under construction. It was captured by security cameras. We know its Ahmaud Arbery and his family has positively ided him. He goes in, walks around and doesnt take anything. Many of us have walked into a home that is under construction and out of curiosity, looked around. The most significant that would be is trespassing. A misdemeanor. It is not any serious offense that would warrant georgias hot pursuit or citizens arrest law being put into effect. Lastly ill point out that there were threats that had been made online. The fw bi was investigating alleging that if there were any future demonstrations in support of Ahmaud Arbery, something bad would happen. They determined who made those threats. They were using someone elses online identity to do it. They have now been taken into custody and it just shows you how even now emotions continue to run very high. Martin savidge, cnn, glen county, georgia. The mayor of atlanta had strong words about arberys death on cnn. She says the killing was similar to those that occurred in the south during segregation. This was a lynching of an africanamerican man and i think that, you know, my heart goes out to his family but i think, again, its part of this bigger issue that we are having in this country. With the rhetoric that we hear coming out of the white house in so many ways i think that many who are prone to being racist are given permission to do it in an overt way that we otherwise would not see in 2020. The mayor also said she did not believe arrests would have been made in the video of arberys death had not come to light. The coronavirus has closed theaters across the United States and the blockbuster set for the summer are getting new release dates. The long awaited sequel to top gun has been pushed back from the june opening to december. It was just days away from opening when theaters around the country, 9500 of them, all closed down because of the coronavirus. Known worldwide for its flashy dance music has gone dark. This is a black swan event for our industry. We have not seen anything of this scale or this intensity hit our business ever. Reporter almost all production has halted. Not just in mumbais baliwood but around the country. Its an industry that normally makes 1200 films a year. Experts say it could at least take two years to get back on track. Im pretty and emotional and upset. Reporter other films are being pushed back like the much anticipated about the world cup winning cricket team. Its unavoidable. Its on stand still so i think watching a film becomes a mode of therapy. Mumbai makes up 1 5 of the countrys coronavirus cases.
