About another wave of infections. Well speak to another nurse helping new york tackle the pandemic. The u. S. Economy slumps. More americans are expected to file Unemployment Benefits. Great to have you along with us this hour. Here in the u. S. There is hope that an experimental drug can soon be used to treat coronavirus infectious. We know that early trial results show that remdesivir has helped patients recover from the virus much faster. It comes as he warns against lifting restrictions though too soon. However, thats what many states are doing. In fact, by the end of the week, 31 states will have partially reopened. Keep in mind though, this is key, the death toll is still rising in some of those areas. The president is keen on restarting the economy. I dont want people to get used to this because this virus is going to be gone and when its gone you want to get back to normal. Youre not going to have a stadium 30 the size of what it was. If i watch alabama versus lsu, i dont want to see 20,000 people versus 120,000 people. We want it to be the way it was. We have to wait until its gone. It will be gone. Weve done a lot to get rid of it. The people want the country open. However, california is taking additional steps to contain the outbreak. The governor plans to close all beaches and parks by friday. Los angeles is now offering free coronavirus tests to all of its residents. So if you think you might have covid19, want the reassurance that you dont, youve been around people that you have seen with symptoms, get a test. We can do it. And i want to remind everybody, these tests are free for the public. No cost at all to you. But you cant put a price on the piece of mind knowing that you cant infect somebody around you. Nick watt has more on how state leaders and Health Officials are trying to fight the pandemic. Nick . What it has proven is that a drug can block this virus. Reporter very early results from trials of remdesivir suggest this antiviral drug actually might treat covid19. The data shows that remdesivir has a clearcut, significant, positive effect in diminishing the time to recovery. This is really quite important. Reporter this is not a cure. In studies tauted by dr. Fauci, it lowered mortality and shortened the duration of the illness. For an antiviral to work in a positive way in these very sick patients to me is, indeed, very good news. Reporter many states in this country now planning to reopen, and soon, despite dire warnings from dr. Fauci. It is more likely than not that we will see this again and again until we really stick the nail in the coffin of this outbreak by a vaccine. Reporter pfizer now says it will begin testing one in the u. S. Shortly and claims it could supply millions by the end of the year. Oxford university in the u. K. Started human trials last week of its own possible vaccine. Still, americas biggest mall operator plans to start opening 49 malls across ten states friday. Parks reopened in miami. Floridas governor, who was late to close, just unveiled his plan for reopening the state. This new phase will start on monday, may 4th, and will for the time being exclude miamida miamidade, broward, palm beach counties. These counties have seen the lions share. We need to focus on facts and not fear. Reporter but theres concern floridas death toll may not be accurate. They stopped releasing their list of coronavirus deaths, which were often higher than official state tallies, after the Health Department intervened. This according to the tampa bay times. They say the list might need to be redacted, hence, the delay. Right now it does not appear that any state meets the vague advisory white house guidelines that call for a downward trajectory of documented cases within a 14day period before any reopening. Hair cuts are already allowed in kroid and georgia. In california were told thats still months away by a governor now feeling pressure from those earlier openers. Theres no question it puts pressure. Id be lying to suggest otherwise. Im worried we can erase all of the gains in a short time. Reporter meanwhile, a marist poll thinks its a bad idea for people to return to work without testing and 91 think we shouldnt be holding large sporting events yet. I hope that theres some form of baseball. I mean, its for the countrys mental health. Reporter 2500 just attended the funeral of a popular rabbi, 12 summonses were issued for violating social distancing and refusing to disburse. The citys mayor called out the entire Jewish Community on twitter and was criticized. I regret if the way i said it in any way gave people a feeling of being treated the wrong way. That was not my intention. It was said with love but it was tough love. It was anger and frustration. Reporter that model often cited by the white house says 74,000 would have died by august 4th could be sooner. One more note on that drug, remdesivir that so many people hope will fight covid19. Right now its not approved for use anywhere in the world for anything, but the fda here in the u. S. Is now in talks ongoing talks with its maker to try to get that drug to patients as quickly as possible. Nick watt, cnn, los angeles. Thanks, nick, for that. I want to talk more about this drug. Elizabeth cohen joins you now and takes a look at the Research Behind it. Elizabeth. Reporter finally, good news about the pandemic. The drug does seem to work. Its not a cure all. Its not going to take care of the problem, but it does seem to fight the virus. Its called remdesivir. Theyve been studying it for a couple of months and its been in the news. Lets take a look at what remdesivir is. Its an experimental drug that was developed for ebola. Its not on the market for any disease. It didnt work well for ebola. In a study of remdesivir, more than 1,000 patients in the United States, spain, germany were assigned to remdesivir and to a placebo. The placebo patients had 15 days to recovery, the remdesivir patients, 11 days to recovery. Thats a fourday difference. Thats important for two reasons. One of them is 4 fewer days in the hospital means 4 fewer days where something might go wrong, on the ventilator, perhaps getting a hospitaladvised campaign. They can take that knowledge, look at what its doing, its actually blocking an enzyme thats needed for replication and try to make other drugs that might do a similar kind of thing or maybe there are other drugs that would go with remdesivir. This is not the end of the road. We are still at the beginning of the road but its good that theyve had this first step. Dr. Anthony fauci, the top Infectious Disease doctor in the u. S. Says this means remdesivir will become the standard of care, it will be standard not experimental to give patients remdesivir. Thank you for that. People are desperate to get back to work, not just in the u. S. Could a tliejt recommemdesivir . I can tell them with 100 certainty remdesivir should not change even with the daily data, with the positive data that we can shorten the time of disease, we can potentially save lives with remdesivir. Remdesivir will not do anything in terms of public health. Remdesivir is going to help people strictly with morbid disease right in the hospital. Just having the remdesivir available, great, it will be great to treat but when it comes to public health, remdesivir is not going to prevent infection, not to be used in somebody with a mild infection who is at home. Remdesivir is for a very specific, patients that get real sick, that have a high risk of death and this is the patient be population who benefit from remdesivir. This should not have any impact in terms of Public Policy and it will not be acknowledged by the buildup of remdesivir. Now on the vaccine front, the u. S. Will launch operation warp speed. Senior trump official said the goal is hundreds of millions of doses by the end of the year. The problem is, theres no vaccine yet but there are more than 80 currently in development around the world. At least seven have reached the Clinical Trial stage, which means theyre approved for testing on humans after successful animal trials. One of those is taking place at Oxford University where human trials started last week. Heres professor andrew pollard, a member of the Group Developing this experimental vaccine. What were hoping with the vaccine is that we can make much better immune responses so that we get longer term protection. We have a little bit of evidence on this. We have been able to see protection or antibody levels that last for a long time. We are in a race but were in a race for a pandemic virus. We need not one vaccine to be successful, we need lots of vaccines to be successful. Now to a developing story from london. The british Prime Minister will be back in the spotlight. Today Boris Johnson will face the Prime Ministers questions on the coronavirus response. The First Time Since he became ill with the coronavirus and became a father again after his partner Carrie Simmons gave birth yesterday. Nick peyton walsh joins me from london. I want to talk about Boris Johnson and the kind of questions hes going to get. A lot of britts needing answers about that initial response. Reporter yes. The key two numbers that will be thrown at him, the revised death toll for the United Kingdom at 26,097 since the virus began. That changed because theyve been counting those who tested positive in the hospital and now theyre counting the figures of all of those who tested positive and have died. There may be others who have not had a test who increase that further in terms of deaths. Even so he, that is deeply chilling. 26,000 is right now the second worst in europe behind italy but only by a matter of 1,000. The u. K. Seems to have 700 or so as of yesterday deaths every day counted, it could be the worst death toll in a week. A week in which Boris Johnson has to make key decisions about whether social restrictions can be lifted. May 7th. Informing that too will be testing. Testing key to the last number i talked about. You cant test if someone has the disease. They wont be part of that original death toll but testing, too, was one of the main key goals that the u. K. Government set itself. It wanted to do 100,000 by today. So the questions he will face will be around that, why that particular goal has been set and why it has not been met. They are tens of thousands set. They claim the idea about its lockdown. Will they extend it . Will they essentially try to bring in the British Population for weeks and months ahead. Then talk about a vaccine, having some good news from one of the oxford studies . Reporter yeah. Great to be part of a story where we can see glimmers of light here and there. This oxford study is still a very limited thing. We are talking about a few hundred people who have been given this experimental vaccine. They hope to see w4r0r7b9 that stops them from getting the disease or certainly reduces its impact upon them. They hope by mid june to be getting results from that. At that stage that doesnt mean suddenly this can be rolled out globally. A vaccine can be very damaging if it doesnt have key tests. Astrazeneca will produce it at bulk at cost. Not for profit and that could be a potential, of course, huge gain for countries struggling to produce the vaccine themselves. Also the United Kingdom doesnt have the mass production capabilities like Oxford University. Important to stretch in the early stages here. The u. S. Governments desire to see warp speed carries with it some risks. Here the enormous efforts being made to get ahead as fast as they can seems to be yielding in a real time way which has a global fascination on what can be done to get out of the pandemic. Thank you, nick peyton walsh. It is no secret the pandemic is taking a huge toll on the u. S. Economy. First quarter gdp shrunk by 4. 8 . The worst performance in 12 years. There are signs of hope. More than two dozen u. S. States already reopening their economies partially. New jersey has one of the highest numbers of coronavirus cases in the country is expected to reopen parks and golf courses this weekend. The governor says the number of new infections is headed in the right direction even as the death toll approaches 6800 people. New york is also looking to begin reopening mid may. The state is almost 300,000 confirmed cases but the daily trend has been mostly downward. We know that more than 23,000 people in new york have died from that virus. Thats almost 40 of the u. S. Total. And the virus certainly remains a threat all over the world. We know experts are warning premature openings really risk a new surge in infections. Because new york city has been so hard hit, hundreds of Health Care Workers from around the u. S. Have actually volunteered to help the city through the crisis. One of them is a registered nurse from georgia who signed up for three weeks in new yorks hospitals. Take a listen. So just feeling really home sick and i am really happy to be here to help. Im still allowed to have feelings of sadness, right . Well, that nurse is rema khalid who joins us from new york. Shes been documenting on instagram. Good to see you. I know youre based here in atlanta. Thanks for all youre doing, all of your colleagues. I know you have a family. You have a young son. Your husband is a doctor. You decided to leave them here in georgia and go up to new york to help out. Why . Hi, robyn. Well, you know, when covid19 first came to the u. S. And we started seeing the death toll raise in new york, you couldnt help but feel the pain in your heart. Not just pain for the patients that were suffering and dying, but pain for the Health Care Providers that were dealing with this crisis. As a Health Care Workers myself, you just watched hopelessly. When i had the opportunity to actually come over here and help, it was hard to say no because you just want to come over here and you want to help out your fellow Health Care Workers in getting a handle on this pandemic. Where are you . You signed up for, what was it, 21 days back to back 12 hour shifts. Yes. Where are you now in that period . Whats it been like . Okay. So im actually currently on day 16 of 21. So im definitely well into my three weeks and all i have to say it is it is definitely absolutely grueling. It is difficult. We knew this when we were coming in. We were focused. We were here to help. Theyre long 12hour days and, you know, we go back to back to back really with no time off. Its very difficult, yes. You walk talk us through the kind of situation you walked into in new york. I know that in one of your posts you said in addition to just nursing, youre doing a lot of macgyvering. This is testing things out day by day, hour by hour. Absolutely. So, you know, the resources are thats the problem here. Were low on resources. You know, were essentially at a war, its a pandemic and were low on resources. Its nobodys fault, its just the way it is. Thats where your Critical Thinking comes into play and you have to get dlefr about getting certain things to work or coming up with something, an alternative if you dont have a resource at hand. Thats kind of what i meant by macgyvering. Give us a sense of what has been your most difficult day. Honestly, i would have to say the most difficult part of this whole experience is seeing the patients sick patients, dying patients without their families. By far i have every Health Care Worker here, theyve all said the same thing. It is really hard to see them, you know, sick without their loved ones at their side, to see them dying without their loved ones at their side. Thats probably what really hits them at their hardest. Hits you as a human being. What have you said to them . How have you comforted them . You know, im a registered nurse and not just me, but actually all of us. Were really a team. You know, the best we can do is we become their family when theyre here. We are there for them. We encourage face time calls with their family. We encourage conversations with their family. We really, you know, sort of become the point person in making sure they feel as connected as possible to the outside world while theyre here. And one of your happiest moments . You know, obviously when our patients do better, you know . Its really nice when instead of a patient decompensating and going downward they start improving and they start actually responding to some of the interventions that were using. Its always a celebratory moment. I know that i work some of the my coworkers and peers that work during the day shift, they often will celebrate their patients discharges, theyll party and have a hug. Its really wonderful to see. How has this changed you, this experience . You know, definitely this experience has already changed me and i imagine when i head back home to my family itll change me even more. Obviously you start to have a you know, you start to have a new respect for essential workers that are out there working and Health Care Workers that are out there working. Really everybody thats doing their part. Not only that, but you start to feel very thankful for your health, for your family, and you just you know, you start feeling even more grateful. Im sure you do and im sure when you give your baby boy a hug when you see him, its going to be a big one. I absolutely cannot wait. Im sure you cant. Im sure he cant as well. You really are so brave and were so proud of you. Thank you so much to all of you and your colleagues. Thank you so much for having me, robyn. All the best. Thank you. Im robyn curnow. Back to more news about potentially promising vaccines. Its not just oxford. Another researcher says they could have a vaccine before the end of the year. Biontech is working with drug giant pfizer. The human trials could begin in the u. S. Next week. Germany, theyve already started. Experts warn even an 18month time line for a vaccine is optimistic. Lets go straight to berlin. Fred pleitgen can tell us more about this. Whats the good news here . Whats the headline . Reporter well, this company, biontech, they say that theyve now completed a milestone really in the first part of the first trial of this vaccine. They say that the first cohort has now been administered those doses of vaccine. Now theyre going to test whether or not those doses have been effective. They want to go on in the second phase of the trial and move it a cohort of new people. What theyre moving to is trying to get more of a glimpse as to how effective a vaccine is. Very important is how safe it is and whether it is safe for human use. So far they are saying that they are making very Good Progress as theyre going along. Youre absolutely right. The u. S. Part of that partnership is the pharma giant pfizer. Theyve been saying that they are pretty much ready to go to trials in the United States as well. Theyre still waiting for Regulatory Approval but they do believe they are on the cusp of receiving that. They say if all of this goes according to the plan, this drug or this vaccine is effective and they do believe that they could get millions of doses out by the end of this year, which obviously it would be extremely good news in the fight against covid19, robyn. Yeah, it certainly would. Thanks, fred pleitgen, thank you. The u. S. Ccusing china of sabotaging his election. Theyll do anything to see him lose and their handling of the coronavirus is part of that. Theyre investigating whether china withheld accurate information. The china state media said the november election is an internal affair and it has no interest in interfering in it. Joining me is david rainy. Good to see you. I would like you to react to this news that the u. S. President is suggesting that china would prefer a biden presidency. Which presidency do you think is in beijings interests if they had to choose . Its a really interesting question and its absolutely not true that china thinks that the American Election is an internal matter for the americans. The Chinese Government is extremely interested in who wins, but it depends on whether you speak to National Security people inside the chinese machine because actually some of them would like to see donald trump win again. I have had them tell me when it comes to human rights, the tradition of american leaders criticizing china on its policies towards continue bet or the Democracy Movement in hong kong, chinese officials have told me they like the fact that donald trump basically doesnt care, as they see it, about any of those issues. It is focused on trade and china buying stuff. Those National Security, hawkish chinese, like donald trump. On the economics side, people who want to smooth business relationships, probably a lot of them would prefer joe biden because he seems like a more familiar figure from the days before trade wars and talk of decoupling. Sort of the old school of making money and having kind of smooth relations. And weve also heard the u. S. , i know the australians, saying that they would want to investigate the source of this virus and criticizing china for not containing it but covering it. In china, what is the perception of all of this criticism . Im afraid its become kind of a propaganda mess because there are legitimate questions which scientists and governments will want to ask one day about how did this start and was there a moment when the chinese authorities did cover it snup even could china have contained it in the city of wuhan and the province of hubei. The problem is in both america and in china that important scientific question is now buried beneath just a torrent of propaganda and very selfinterested finger pointing. Youre seeing the Chinese Government trying to spread the idea that maybe this began in america, maybe the virus was planted in china by the american military. Youre seeing Foreign Ministry spokesmen tweet out conspiracy theories and we have seen members of congress in america and seeing if the trump administration, including this saying that maybe it leaked from a Chinese Laboratory where, frankly, there isnt hard evidence of that. There is suspicion that the propaganda machines are trying to blame the other side for political reasons. Thats a fascinating point. Lets talk about the u. S. I know you also used to be the d. C. Correspondent for the economist, the way the u. S. Has dealt with it. They have a reported higher rates. U. S. President has suggested cleaning products be ingested. States have opened up haphazardly. Were seeing trucks with bodies piling up in streets. No matter where it originated, failures to contain the virus here, how have they played out in china. Youre right, i used to be the Washington Bureau chief before i was the bureau chief. My kids are american. I have to tell you americas views americas reputation right now in china is rock bottom. Even the kind of chinese who dream of sending their kids to u. S. Colleges, used to think of america as a rich country, theyre shaking their heads in disbelief with what looks like total chaos and lack of preparation. The machine is extremely adept at the fact that america has a free press. They love to quote attacks on President Trump questioning whether President Trump is handling this badly. Those are immediately relayed back to the Chinese People with an overlying message, you see, didnt we always tell you that western democracies are inefficient and chaotic . How much safer to be running the public with the communist party looking after you. Its tragic to see how effective that is. Its built on a kernel of truth. Last question before you go. We know china has not been truthful. We know china hasnt been transparent about death tolls. What are the lessons xi jinping will take away from this . What has been the overriding lesson for the chinese leadership . I think the outside world is this was coming up from the beginning because a one party system with no free press doesnt have the right checks and balances. Im afraid the lessons the communist leadership will take from this is local officials will mess up. We need stricter control. If Public Opinion was bumpy, we need more censorship, more nationalism and we will keep pumping out the message americans and others in the west are messing up and we need to stick with what we have. Always fantastic to get your perspective there. Live from beijing. Thank you. Pleasure. A pandemic has gone. Economists expect another 3. 5 million americans will have filed firsttime claims. Lets talk about this with christine romans. Its startling. Ive lost track. You have to tell us if 3. 5 million filed claims, where will we be . Whats the number going to be . Reporter almost 30 Million People over the past six weeks alone. Wow. Reporter robyn, weve never seen that in history. Unemployment rate, well know that next friday, approaching 15 to 30 . Honestly, this was truly an awful month in the american economy, awful month, unlike anything weve ever seen before. The question is does the u. S. Strategy of bailing it out, congresss strategy, the fed unlimited sort of support for the credit markets, does that allow us to recover at the end of the year . At one level the markets are doing pretty well, but the reality is for most americans, people who never thought they would have to wait in a food line or get free food from a food bank are having to do that. It really seems like some of the most vulnerable and also its been a pretty hard choice for workers in how they manage this. Absolutely. Tomorrow is may 1st. In the United States you pay rent, pay your mortgage, you have all of these bills you do. There are people who have been laid off since april 1st when they had bills due who havent been able to get their unemployment checks, right . That has been very frustrating for people. I feel for the people who say stimulus money in unemployment checks, i havent been able to get through. The United States, all of these states manage the unemployment check process and it has been a disaster. Some states are slowly starting to reopen. Theres a question if you are afraid to go to work, say you work at a meat packing plant, you work at a grocery store, you are afraid to go back to work, what happens with your Unemployment Benefits . Listen to the governor of iowa. If you are an employer and you offer to bring your employee back to work and they decide not to, thats a voluntary oh, whats the word im looking for. Pardon . Quit. We dont have that happen very often. Voluntary quit so, therefore, they would not be eligible for the unemployment money. Voluntary quit. Imagine you work for a restaurant, you have someone who lives in your household who maybe has a preexisting condition. The restaurant slowly reopens and youre given your job back. Its interesting to me because the economy is slowly starting to thaw. Just on the edges, right .
