If respiratory therapists, doctors, nurses, front line caregivers are sick, dying, there wont be anyone left to take care of the public. We are demanding to invoke the defense production act so that all of our factories can spinning out ppe for us. Ventilators for us, materials that we need to save people from this pandemic that will only get worse. Yeah, my colleague Elizabeth Cohen got this letter that was sent to the white house about this last night. In some ways, anderson, it makes perfect sense. Weve been talking about asymptomatic spread for some time and what that means is people without symptoms are not actively coughing or sneezing but able to spread this. So it was probably meaning the same thing. People have the virus in their nose, in their mouth. Again, not causing them to have any illness but the virus is there, and just through normal activities, it could potentially spread. Its not clear still just how significant that is. How likely it is to happen or how much its contributing to overall communities. But weve had evidence of that for some time. What do we know about whos getting sick and dying . This is really, we know people with preexisting conditions, elderly people are more at risk, but you and i have talked to countless people now, where theyre younger people, theyre ending up hospitalizing, younger people who are even ending up dying from this and i think its becoming increasingly clear to the medical community that maybe theres Something Else at play here. There may be people who are at increased risk for some reason. You know, i interviewed dr. Fauci yesterday, two days ago, he said something i found extraordinary. Listen to this. This is unusual, im fascinated by what i call the pathog pathogenesis. Some people do well. Others, theyre dead. The dichotomy, theres something there, sanjay, were missing from a pathogenesis. I dont think its only if youre elderly or underlying conditions. Theres Something Else that well ultimately figure out hopefully. Thats really interesting. As you can imagine, yeah, i think medical professionals who are taking care of these patients in the honspitals, is there Something Else that ties these patients together . Especially the ones who dont fit that profile of being vulnerable, anderson. I think this is going to be a big source of, a big area of research. Weve got to figure that out. One treatment proposed by President Trump thats been out there and President Trump was fusive about it was a derivative of chloroquine. A small study said it helped with moderately ill patients. Is the key here though they were not severely ill patients or do we know much about this . You know, its a very early study, anderson. Ive got to tell you, if we werent in the middle of a pandemic like this, this isnt a study we would necessarily report on because its so early and its so small, but youre right, it was mild patients that received the treatment and compared it to other mild patients who did not receive the treatment. The results here, they did see some improvement specifically with things like fever and cough and, you know, the idea that the patients who received the treatment, theyre symptoms sir a stopped a day earlier. And there were patients who became ill in the study but those who became more severely ill were patients who had not received the treatment. Its tough to say, anderson. You know, obviously, with no other options, i think people are going to start placing more emphasis on things. There is a concern about side effects, especially people who have heart rhythm abnormalities, liver problems, kidney problems. Theres lots of things to consider here, but these are unusual times. I think that goes without saying. Theyre going to expand these trials recently, its happening in new york, these trials getting quite large and hopefully well have data soon. It could take a few weeks or a month but hopefully, well have data that proves this out so that Something Else can be offered. I want to play something that brian kemp said about why he issued a stay at home order. Finding out this virus is now transmitting before people, so what weve been telling people, directives from the cdc, if you start feeling bad, stay home. Those individuals who you have been infecting people before they ever felt bad, well, we didnt know that until the last 24 hours and as dr. Toomey told me, she goes, this is a game changer for us. Im really kind of stunned by what he said because weve known that for quite some time, havent we . Anderson, this is inexcusable. I mean, its just inexcusable. He cant be being honest there. My kids who go to school in georgia knew that a month ago, i mean, i cant even believe that. Look, this is serious. There was a paper written back in early february about this. There was significant evidence of this even earlier than that in china that scientists were paying attention to. The scientific community, the cdc who we just referenced in georgia talked about this on a public call on february 4th. Weve known this for a long time. To say we just found out in the last 24 hours, and thats why were doing this this is just not right. Thats an excuse. Maybe he really didnt know that, which means someone didnt tell him, although i find that hard to believe. Everybody in the country i mean, theres no such thing as political malpractice. I dont know if its criminal, but for him, of course, if the governor of a state has not briefed himself on everything about this virus, that is inexcusable. I still dont understand, there is no scientific rationale for the governors who have yet to actually declare stay at home orders for their state. I dont understand how any governor, i understand economic concerns and all that, nevertheless, if we are truly all in this together, which we are, its important that everybody be under the same guidelines, no . Absolutely, anderson. Its essential. I mean, no state can be an island in the middle of all this and if theyre not doing this by now, theyre affecting and risking my health and your health. People they dont even know, in places far away. Its not just about an individual anymore. Its about everybody. I feel like a broken record. Weve said so many times but we are dependent on each other in a way that ive never experienced before. So the fact that this is not happening, it doesnt make sense medically and scientifically. But you and i talked to bill gates. Weve done tons of interviews. Were going to pay a big price in the longer run. Georgia announced it, florida announced it. Not in effect yet. I think it goes into Effect Tomorrow night. And churches, by the way, are exempt, which, large gatherings, churches are exempt, i mean, you know. I understand though, the political reasons for that and the religious reasons for that, but just scientifically, science is what rules the day in a pandemic, and the science says dont gather in large groups. You know, i can understand that people want to lean on each other, faith is really important at this time. The science is clear. Ill just say it again, its knot junot just about you. You do this, and youre going to risk your familys health. Youre going to risk your communitys health. Youre going to risk everyone around you. If youre not doing it for yourself, if you think, im okay, im willing to take the chance, maybe the guy next to you is not willing to take that chance. Canada, i guess like the United States has a complicated or seemingly complicated system of government. Its a series of shared responsibilities, but what weve done here in toronto, including, as you mentioned, by cancelling events is trying to be honest and straightforward and transparent with people. We have imposed all the measures we can, including requiring the isolation of people identified as having by orders, isolation of people as having the virus or people in close contact with them. Thats something thats done by order, which can be done locally. There are other things done by provinces, like states, and that has included declaring essential and nonessential businesses and were certainly in favor of more businesses being declared nonessential, so fewer people will come to work. And with the events, we were just being honest with people and straightforward to say, look, this thing is not over in time for the Easter Egg Hunt or passover. We are going to have to hunker down here. This is from the mayor of Fort Lauderdale saying the coast guard, Homeland SecurityHealth Officials and Broward County have reached a decision to allow the cruise ships to dock at port everglades, ending a journey in which many on board became ill and showed symptoms of covid19. This is great news for these individuals who have been sitting just offshore here in florida waiting for this decision to come down. This is what we know of whats going to happen once they get here from Broward County commissioners and weve been in contact with, they say individuals who are healthy will be allowed to disembark. Individuals who are sick or still have symptoms will be on the ship and they will get treated on the ship. Individuals who need immediate medical attention will be allowed to be taken to hospitals. To avoid Community Spread, were told that the individuals who will be allowed to disembark will be loaded on to private buses and driven to airports. They will not be allowed to linger at the airport. They will board charter planes and then head out towards their destination. Were also learning more from these Broward County commissioners as they were negotiating and debating with the cruise lines more about the passengers on board. We know that 11 people on board who tested for covid19, nine individuals tested positive. We have been reporting that four individuals on board had died but we didnt know causes of death. Now we do, according to the Broward County commissioners, we understand that two individuals tested positive for covid19. An individual had a heart attack and then there was a preexisting condition. On board, 311 americans. 46 states are represented and there are individuals from countries like france, germany, australia, sweden, ireland, mexico, so anderson, were expecting at some point today that on the horizon, were going to see this ship come up to the docks behind me and at least some of these people will be able to disembark. So do we know, will those who dont have symptoms, are they going to be tested or at the very least are people who are sent to airports, are they going to be given masks to wear in order to go home . Because obviously, we know just because somebody doesnt have symptoms doesnt mean theyre not already infected. Reporter youre absolutely right and thats, of course, one of the fears. Asymptomatic individuals who might be spreading the virus. What we understand from the Broward County commissioners that weve been in contact with is the way theyre going to control possible Community Spread here in Broward County is by loading these individuals directly on to private buses. Theyre not going to linger. Theyre not going to stop between here and the airport. Theres already charter flights that are arranged and once these individuals arrive to the airport, theyre not going to linger, theyre not going to be hanging out at the airport. Theyre immediately going to be boarding these flights and heading out to their destinations. We understand that theres at least 200 passengers that would require at least three legs to their flight in order for them to get home. Those arrangements are being made, all the officials weve been talking to are concerned about Community Spread and thats why its taken this long to come up with an agreement with the cruise line because they were wanting to make sure that safety and security was paramount to make sure that the coronavirus didnt spread here in Broward County. White house task forces are worried rural areas could be the next hot spots because they are under estimating their case numbers. I talked to dr. Fauci about this last week during our town hall and he said its essential in states that think they dont have a big problem, its essential that they are doing a lot of testing to do Contact Tracing for anybody who does have the time when they think they dont have a large number of people to prepare and get testing in place. We are testing those who present and were trying to make sure that everybody who exhibits worrisome symptoms do get tested and are isolated and are doing the kinds of things that weve been asking them to do.
