Coming to grips with the damage caused by Tropical Cyclone pam. The storm plowed through lath friday and early saturday. At least six people have died there. The death toll is expected to go up. The storm has made communication between vanuatus 82 islands virtually impossible. The president has pleaded for aid from right around the world. Im speaking with you with a heart that is so heavy. I do not really know what impact cyclone pam has left vanuatu. We have all experienced disaster at one time or another. Today we appeal for your assistance. Aid workers are already on the ground in vanuatu. Search rescue and medical crews are on their way from australia. For more on the relief efforts, im joined by a representative from world vision. Tell us what you have seen in the past 48 hours, the state of devastation in port vila. Reporter caller okay so yesterday near the immediate aftermath of pam, port vila was in complete devastation. There were trees on the road. Bits of roofing twisted like it was tin foil. Houses have been blown away, and villages have pretty much just disappeared. And today ive been able to go out and see the other communities and i, it breaks my heart to say it but i thought id seen the worst of it yesterday. But in the past two hours it has been out in some of the outer villages of port vila and also the main areas of port vila it is absolute catastrophic. I was at a village about 20 minutes out of port vila. And people were showing me their homes. And whats left of them. Often the wind has just blown straight through and gutted them completely. Its ripped the roofs off. Most of the walls are down. These people evacuated to a nearby church. And near that church was a school. Two girls, mimi and suzy showed me what was a classroom. And today it was a pile of rubble. You say youve gone to some of the Outer Islands. If you go to the Outer Islands of the archipelago, thats fear that those people in the Outer Islands have not had the protection. Caller port vila yesterday, we werent able to get around port vila itself. We were able to get more around the island. But we have not had any communication with Outer Islands. So world vision has many staff that are based in these communities that we have not heard from yet, and communications go down. So right now its about 7 00. Im in port vila and i am doing this interview in total darkness. We still dont have power. We are very fortunate, weve managed to have Running Water reconnected. But communication is still very very difficult. And like i said we still have not heard from those Outer Islands, but we will be out to the islands that are more vulnerable to devastation than port vila. And chloe, when you look at these parts that youve gone to what do you need most . Im guessing food clean water, thats clearly a musthave at the moment. Caller yes, i mean food and water is an immediate need but also shelter. And what peoples houses have standing theyre not safe to inhabit. So today people that are still sleeping in their village, theres about 20 to 30 people sleeping in one room. And these, these rooms themselves theyre just very sparse. Around port vila were lucky. We do have some big supermarkets here. And people we had warning with cyclone pam, and i was at the supermarket thursday night before cyclone pam was due to hit on the friday. And it was absolute chaos there. People were stocking up on food and water, and matches. And i mean obviously, with the extensive damage thats been caused and peoples houses flooded, a lot of people have lost these supplies also. Chloe morrison with us with world vision. Thanks very much. As Tropical Cyclone pam continues to churn away from the vanuatu islands, its going towards new zealand. Were mostly rain and some very heavy gusts . Yeah so fortunately this storm is going to move just to the east of the north island of new zealand. But not without lashing parts of the north island with strong winds, very high abnormally high seas and some well gusty winds and rain as well. Here it is Tropical Cyclone pam, just racing south and east of the vanuatu eye landsislands. This is new zealand. This is in fact the new zealand radar coming out of the north island. This is auckland and you can see the shading of blue and yellow indicating the rain bands moving through the area at the moment. This storm is going to continue to move over the next 24 hours through a southeasterly direction but still allowing for the outer bands to lash this area with wind gusts in excess of 100 Kilometers Per Hour in some instances. And it is possible we see rainfall totals in excess of 100 millimeters. So were going to look on for that from auckland to the bay of plenty. Conditions will start to improve by tuesday, but it will be an extremely wet and rather blustery start to the workweek across new zealand. Heres the eye wall just narrowly missing the north island. People in the south island are spared from the full brunt of this storm. This is the forecast for new zealand. 22 degrees to start off the workweek. As we continue to relive some of these images coming out of vanuatu, its incredible to see some of the devastation thats come out of that region. People escaping storm surge, strong winds and rainfall in excess of 200 millimeters in the capital city of port vila. A few showers still is going to hamper the recovery effort across that region isa. If you want to help the people in vanuatu devastated by cyclone pam, you heard from chloe in world vision really still a lot of work. You can go to our website, and you will find a list of organizations that are on the ground there to help. Thats cnn. Com impact. Now we have some breaking news to bring to you. The taliban is claiming responsibility for two suicide blasts in pakistan. The blast hit a church and a school. And im joined on the phone by sophia what can you tell us . Reporter right now there are been more than 40 injured. The attack took place during sunday mass when there were hundreds of people in the church. And in response theres a lot of rage a lot of chaos. Security officials have reached, but at the moment the people who were there are protesting and they are calling against the government as we speak. And the taliban claimed responsibility very shortly after this . How short was it . Reporter it was promptly afterwards. They claimed that they did it in response to the governments lack of sharia in the country. This comes in the wake of the taliban actually reuniting. This is the first attack in pakistan that has taken place after the taliban have reunited as an entity in the country. And sofia explain to us, was this two blasts hitting a church and a school . Caller well there were two blasts. Two attempted suicide blasts in lahore. There were security guards at the gates of the church and prevented them from coming in. So the attack could have been a lot more deadlier than it has been. We do have many people injured and hurt, but this could be as bad as the attack that took place at the peshawar church. It was the deadliest attack on a minority in pakistan. Im seeing as well the dead included a Police Constable and a child. As many as 20 people delivered to a hospital. And when was the last time that Christian Community has been targeted by the taliban . Caller well the last time that the Christian Community itself has been targeted by the taliban on such a scale was in 2013 when there was an attack on the all Saints Church in peshawar in pakistan. There were twin bombs at a church that happened by suicide bombers, however, they were far deadlier than the bunones we are seeing right now. And this comes go ahead. Caller this is a very bloody attack with minorities being attacked. Weve seen attacks on mosques of shia minorities almost every weekend. And its just a wave after wave of attacks and minorities and it explains the rage that were seeing at the moment outside the church. Because people are protesting that the government has not provided Adequate Security to the church. Sophia sigh fee, our reporter in pakistan. The taliban claiming responsibility for attacks in pakistan. As soon as we have more details, well bring it to you. Well, ahead of tuesdays election in israel a rightwing rally is being held in support of Benjamin Netanyahu. Hes trailing in the polls in the final days before the election saturday evening. The threeterm leader participated in a debate. The main focus of the debate is security concerns for jerusalem. Netanyahu is expected to conduct the final parliament session. Lets bring in our middle east correspondent for more analysis on the upcoming israeli election. Thanks very much for joining us. Lets start off with what weve seen the last couple years. Recent years, israels electorate leaning forwards the right of security. Now were seeing them tilt to the left slightly on economic concerns. How much do you think social Economic Issues will influence this election . Reporter well theres no doubt that were seeing a trend that started in the previous elections. Israelis want their politicians talking about social Economic Issues. Its not something new that they want platforms that will guarantee them lower cost of housing, better education for their children. Whats new is that this time around israelis may go and vote on those issues. They said listen ive talked a lot about the economy but when it comes down to it im worried about my security. So im going to vote for netanyahu. I went back to those same families and to no family i think is the security issue more important. And that same family told me enough is enough. Theyve voted for netanyahu election after election and this time theyre going to vote for a different candidate. The rising price of their home has become more of a danger than rockets coming from gaza. In this case many see netanyahu as being stronger on security issues. Weve seen Isaacs Herzog focussing on Economic Issues. Reporter hes now been campaigning a bit more on Economic Issues. Weve seen him mentioning it more in interviews with israeli politicians. Netanyahu is doing interviews with the Israeli Press for the first time in years. So israelis are hearing him speak not just on the security but on the day to day realities of the cost of living here in israel. And staying on the economy, i think this is very important. Are voters from what youve been hearing in the streets intrigued by mr. Herzogs promise to spend more on education, and Affordable Housing . What are you hearing from people on the streets . Reporter what im hearing is that its become an untenable situation here for israelis. The average israeli dponts make enough to buy a house, the price of basic foodstuffs. They like to talk about the price of cottage cheese because cottage cheese is a very popular item. Its gotten to the point where they cant afford to bring that home for their kids. Many young israelis are leaving the country after they get an education for berlin and australia. They need a shift towards more Affordable Housing, higherpaying jobs. Greater Pension Funds for the elderly. And they want to see politicians address those. Theyre sick of elections that address hezbollah and iraq and iron iran. He want to talk about day to day realities. Thanks very much for taking the time to speak to us this morning. But you get a sense of what many feel you say that the writing is on the wall in tel avivs vibrant political art scene. Reporter is there a difference in what this makes, the street art makes . I think for many israelis, they pass in the streets. Not everybody stops to smell the flowers, but sometimes you get it in osmosis. We see the leaders of the politicians today maybe all the map, the whole map of the israeli politics. And then they are standing on what we call in hebrew reporter a plunger. In english. Not very nice in a way the connotation. Reporter this isnt pro or anti any politician. This just looks to be antipoliticians all of them. I think it captures what many israelis feel like were fed up with this wars but also these people selling us dreams and hopes. And in the end, you know it doesnt happen. Were still stuck in this limbo here. And Benjamin Netanyahu is here but is not that prominent in the composition. I dont see that hes like jesus in the last supper or Something Like that. So this is the wife of netanyahu, the israeli Prime Minister. And shes showing things in different places in the city. There were issues about the expenses of their residence.
