The Fatal Shooting of an opposition figure there is prompting speculation from his supporters that he may have been targeted by the kremlin. Officials say Boris Nemtsov was walking across a bridge from the kremlin when a car pulled up and someone opened fire. Flowers mark the spot where he fell dead. Russian president Vladmir Putin condemned his killing and ordered a full investigation into who may be responsible. Fred reporter gunned down in the heart of russias capital. Investigators work the crime scene where Boris Nemtsovs body lay on one of the main bridges. Law enforcement Officials Say nemtsov, one of russias most prominent opposition figures was struck in the back by several bullets. The killing happened right next to the kremlin walls and in the have sinty of the cathedral. He was walking here with a friend when a car stopped and the assailants immediately opened fire. As mourners laid flowers and lit candles, speculation, who did it. Some blamed the government of Vladmir Putin, others disagree. This is a message for all of us you have a guy who works with you bam bam bam. Who ordered it. We have some small part of in russia people who want to break putin. And maybe they make it to show another people and another country, government of country, how bad putin. Reporter its not clear who is behind the killing, but Boris Nemtsov had many enemies. He was Russias DeputyPrime Minister in the late 90s and joined the opposition after Vladmir Putin came into power. He was jailed several times for criticizing the government. Vladmir putin condemned nemtsovs killing and offered the family his condoedances. He launched an investigation into the murder and said it bears all the haul marks of a contract killing, aimed at provoking unrest. This is a friend of nemtsov, he was one of the first at the scene of the murder and criticizes russias president. I dont know who pulled intrigger, he tells me. But i strongly believe its russias government and Vladmir Putin who are responsible for it. Vladmir putin is responsible for creating the atmosphere of hatred in our country. Theyve incited hatred. Nemtsov was said to take part in a opposition rally criticizing russias role in the ukraine conflict this sunday. Instead there will be a march of mourning for one of russias most opposition voices. It was last year that nemtsov was featured in a episode of cnns Anthony Bourdain parts unknown unknown. He said he was aware of what happens to critics of president putin. We were supposed to be dining at another restaurant when they heard you were going to be joining me we were uninvited. Should i be concerned about having dinner with you. This is a country of corruption. When you have business in a very unsafe situation. Everyone can destroy you. The critics of the government, putin, bad things seem to happen to them. Yes. This represents russia of 19th century, not 21st. Critics of putin beware. They another man accused putin of corruption and spent years in labor camps. This man aorganized a coupe. There has been a political crisis of scores of People Killed in the last month and a half in Political Violence that doesnt seem to be directly related to the criticism of islam or islamist exextremism. It does fit a separate trend of violence Political Violence within bangladesh where the father of roy has come out directly accusing Islamist Groups of playing some role in this. The main islamist Political Party in the country has denied any links to this act of violence and has called for justice in the murder of roy. A muslim preacher who has been accused by the college of spreading hate speech in the classrooms he used for teaching arabic and the koran. He is known to security officials. In 2003, police alleges he was an al qaeda sleeper agent who received training in afghanistan. He spent six years being watched by canadian authorities. In 2009 courts determined he was not a security threat. He says he only met one of the missing students on a couple of occasionals. He says he is just trying to influence young muslims. Heres the question many people are asking. Will this investigation be fair and thorough given this is a person who was vocally against the russian president . Well if you look at the history of political killings in putins russia not one of them has been brought to a conclusion including the names of those behind the murders, were ever named even if the actual executers are. There is no doubt that what happened in moscow last night is a act of political terrorism. When the leader of the democratic opposition is shot by a professional killer 200 yards away from putins residence in an area that is closely monitored by security services. This is an act of political terrorism. Last night the kremlin regime has overstepped the mark of a regular dictatorship to a terrorist dictatorship. We should be clear about that. I want to say that Boris Nemtsov was one of the most honest and courageous politicians in russia. And he dedicated his life especially the last 15 years of his life, under the putin regime. In the end he gave his life for a Free Democratic russia. It will become a reality, and when it does nemtsov will be one of the people that made it happen. To pose the question to you, and, you know taking from what youve said here i think i know what you might say, but the question will this be a fair and thorough investigation do you believe in to who was responsible for this . I hope it is a thorough investigation. I hope the authorities defy the past experience and conduct a real thorough detailed investigation and publically name the executers, as well as those who are behind it. I hope so. But, unfortunately, cannot say anything for sure. It is important to point out that we hear from the russian president that he is asking for a task force to look into this. This is not the first time that an opposition member has been targeted and has met similar fate. What can you tell us about just being a member of the Opposition Party in russia especially now at a time where the popularity for president putin seems very high . First of all, i dont think its meaningful to talk about opinion polls in an authoritarian regime. When you have rigged elections and total government control over the of the air waves and television channels. I dont think its meaningful to talk about popularity. The opposition in russia today, the real democratic opposition is very much arofficially driven by the putin regime over the last 15 years. Especially over the last year as putin began his war against ukraine. We saw the escalation of this campaign of hatred and aggression of calling those who oppose putins policies traitors. And the results of that campaign we saw last night here on the bridge when nemtsov was killed. There is no doubt that this atmosphere of hatred and intimidation created by the regime against its opponents is the reason for his death. We appreciate your insight on what happened there in russia. We will stay on top of this story. Earlier my colleague interviewed an expert of russian culture who say nemtsov did not pose much of a threat to the kremlin. Hes not sure why hae was targeted. One thing im sure well hear about is whether the kremlin will be complicit or not. I dont think that makes very little since since it happened right next to the kremlin. The truth about nemtsov, whom ive met personally. I did not know terribly well. He was articulate intelligent, tall and handsome. Over the past decade he has become increasingly irrelevant. So the risk or rather the threat that he posed to the kremlin is virtually nil these days. So you know my initial impression is to direct this to link this to the kremlin or president putin is really a red herring at this point. Presumably he would have had a lot of other enemies. Presumably yes but we dont know who they were. They could have been from business political opponents within russias elite. The liberal movement itself has been fraying all over the place. The reason why its failed to articulate a coherent message that would resonate with the russian voters has been because of the insighting within the liberal movement. Too many bright and intelligent personalities chronically unable to come together and create an organized opposition to the kremlin. Thats why im curious, if im reading too much into this. I dont want to make it sound like a cheap melodrama. It seems like the tragic end of a tragic figure. A man who had a brief window at the very center of the reform window under boris yeltsin. He was pushed into a marginal role by the authorities that replaced him. Yes i would include a caveat in what you said. The russian authorities certainly did have a role in marginalizing political figures. That has been a convenient excuse for the russian liberals to blame their inability to articulate a message that would resonate with ordinary russians and to sort of push all the blame off on to the kremlin. It was such a brazen attack in a busy part of the city on a busy evening. Lots of witnesses presumably. Will we ever know do you think who pulled the trigger and who ordered the killing . Those are two different issues who pulled the trigger. We will probably found out pretty quickly. Who ordered and paid for the killing is always a lot murkier and difficult to follow through for the police. Now, what we know so far is that Vladmir Putin has ordered the Justice Ministry the ministry of interior and the fsb to make this a priority and has ordered their heads to take personal interest in this case. Well see how it unfolds over the next few weeks. I would not expect a clear answer to come until late in the spring at least. That is a different perspective. Reports say president putin has ordered three Law Enforcement agencies to put toort a task force to investigate the shooting. Nemtsov was very critical of russias role in ukraine and planned a march to end Vladmir Putins aggression. Meanwhile, military and rebel forces have started withdrawing their heavy weapons from the front lines in eastern ukraine. One area is donetsk where they still see some fighting. Hotly contested. Some residents say they cant tell the cease fire actually existed. Dianye reporter theres not much life on these trashed streets. Nearly every home has been hit.
