You are watching cnn live coverage. Im natalie allen. Outrage and sorrow continue to pour out of japan in the wake of the latest killing by isis militants. This is the scene in tokyo. A visual for the two japanese nationals murdered by isis over the past two weeks. Late saturday the militant Group Released the latest video showing what appeared to be the decapitated body of journalist kenji goto. He had gone to syria to rescue a colleague who had been taken hostage and was later killed by isis. Japanese Prime Minister abe promises to work with his allies to j bring the killers to justice. The government has tried its best to deal with this matter but we are deeply saddened. By this despicable and horrendous act of terrorism. Will you have been covering this story for sometime now. It just must be a horrendous day for mr. Gotos family. It is and has been that way. Even though this wasnt surprising wasnt surprising to us. We have been following the story from the beginning. More surprising to the japanese people we talked to there was still a real feeling of shock. The video itself which i hope people will never see. Something i wish i had never seen but felt we needed to report about it just appalling. The special edition of the newspapers here they did show as we are, a single still frame of the video. The pictures that i think we need to focus on more are these. Kenji goto as he lived, not as he died. Out in war zones, telling the stories of people whose lives were turned upside down. You see a smile there. Kindness is a word that people keep using when they talk to us about kenji goto his kindness and compassion and courage going to dangerous places. Keep in mind as a japanese journalist many war zone journalists from this country have felt for a long time they were fairly safe or safe aer than most when going to dangerous places like this because japan being a passivist country never got involved. But Prime Minister abe now publicly showing the coalition against isis has changed the dynamic of this. Kenji gotos mother is talking and shes talking about how she wants people to remember her son. Translator im shedding tears of sorrow. I just cant think of any words to say. But i dont want this sorrow to create a chain of hatred. Kenji worked for children who suffered from conflicts and poverty and his goal was to create a Society Without war. I want to pass on his thoughts to people around the world. His wife reported a statement just hours before the final isis deadline where they threatened his life. She said he was a good father an honest man. She hoped their two daughters, 2yearold and newborn would be able to see their father again. Tragically they wont be able to see him again, but you can bet there will be so many people in their lives as they grow up telling them about his father and what he did and his bravery and compassion and they will have they will be shared those stories through the people who knew and loved him and so many people here in japan and around the world have come to know him over this last week and a half or so as this has unfolded which makes the loss so much more devastating. Absolutely. You have reported before will that many people there in the country are questioning the timing of the Prime Ministers visit to the middle east knowing these men were in captivity and announcing support through humanitarian and medical assistance. There are questions being asked. No one is disputing the support is a muchneeded thing. 200 million in military aid but did it need to be announced so publicly . Did there need to be a Big Press Conference at the time there were two japanese citizens in the hands of the terror group. People are asking the question. Political opponents of the Prime Minister and people on the streets of tokyo we are talking to today. Today is about grieving and honoring two lives lost. Because we cant forget a pilot was also murdered by isis. In the coming days and weeks there will be tough questions here about how this happened what could have been done to prevent it and what could have been done to prevent like from this from happening again. Will thank you. The jordanian government just issued a strong condemnation of gotos killing. This while they await word on the fate of a pilot who isis took hostage. Isis threatened to kill him if jordan didnt release a convicted terrorist from iraq. Cnn gets reaction from family and friends as more people wait and hope there in amman. All the family can do is sit and wait for word on the fate of the 26yearold held captive by isis more than a month. The wait is taking its toll. Too hard. Too hard to wait. Circumstances that we make us too nervous. We cant sleep. We cant eat. We cant do anything. Our work is stopped, our life has stopped. Reporter in amman life is normal. Since isis threatened to execute the jordanian pilot it is a mood of unsternty. We saw it on tv and facebook twit wither in fact the government never listened to we just wait. This is the unity of jordan trust our government, trust our king. Reporter he like many jordanians believes the decision to not give isis the female prisoner was the right thing to do. At this bakery a retired air force engineer thinks isiss silence since the deadline passed is part of their strategy. This is not the case. I think the game is understood by everyone here in jordan. Reporter most here realize what happens next is up to the captors. Nothing in our hands. We are praying for him that he will come back to his family and friends and to his job. Reporter theres still no sign if he is alive. Not clear if he will ever come home but for now all this nation can do is wait. Cnn, amman. Isis is also trying right now to overton run the oilrich oil city of kirkuk but Kurdish Forces are fighting back from the air and ground. A kurdish website says at least 30 isis fighters have been killed and 15 captured since the group stormed the city on friday. The two generals have been killed in the past two days. On saturday isis seized an oil field southwest of kirkuk and took 15 workers hostage. Analysts say isis may be attacking kirkuk to detract them from mosul which isis controls. Demonstrators are on the march through hong kong. It is the first mass rally since the occupy campers were cleared out. Well, they are back. Well take you there live and show you what they have to say to the government yet again. Also ahead, the measles continuing its spread in the u. S. The first major demonstration since the government tore down the occupy camp that shut down parts of the city for months. Cnn has a report from there right now. If the government thought this was over today is evidence it is certainly not. Thats exactly what we are hearing from demonstrators on the streets of hong kong. It is a peaceful festive crowd. Give you a look at the tail end of the march. The umbrellas that we had seen the elle yellow umbrellas coming through, theres a few coming through. The numbers dont appear to be what organizers were calling for. Some 50,000 they were calling for to march. Just down here, though behind that screen and in the garden area what is called statue square is where a rally will be take place later this evening. The organizers here have a permit until midnight. There have been some questions whether some demonstrators will choose to stay in the streets beyond their permanent time and perhaps try to occupy some of the road. What we are hearing by and large from protesters is we are here because we want your voice to be heard, we want the Hong Kong Government other congress congers and the International Community to remember this is not over yet and we have a goal and their goal of course is what they have been chanting through the streets, we want true democracy. Natalie . Sending a message. Whats the governments current stance . Any comment . Reporter natalie, no comment on this protest at this point. The government is going through a Public Consultation on this reform process. Remember this is all about the 2017 election for chief executive. Thats the top job here. China has basically said the communist government in and beijing came out in august and said look we will allow one person one vote but candidates have to be screened by a nominating committee. Thats what this has been about. Protesters say thats not true democracy. The Hong Kong Government is asking for input from the government. They are going through a consultation phase the next month or so. Only within that framework and for people on the streets thats not enough. Natalie, the big question is where does the movement go from here . We will wait and see. David, thank you. The tents from the occupy movement are long gone. People who want to experience them still have a chance sort of. A man is renting out tents indoors in what he calls an occupy hotel. Our asiapacific editor Andrew Stevens reports. Reporter it was a few short weeks ago the road behind me here in one of the busiest shopping districts was a mass of tents of the occupy movement. You remember the scene, tens of thousands of mainly students demonstrating for their right for more democracy in the city. Well the occupy movement is now over. It lives on at least in spirit on the 13th floor of this building. Its an occupy hotel. For a few bucks, you can experience a little bit of what it was like. That means sleeping indoors in a tent surrounded by some of the umbrellas that defined this moment occupy paraphernalia collected by Steven Thompson before the protest sites were demolished in december. Id like to keep alive the spirit of the whole Democracy Movement going a bit longer and some informed people in particular young travelers around the world about our fight for democracy here in hong kong. Reporter that fight lasted more than two months. These tents become a symbol of the demonstrators committee though to their cause. Now they take up most of stephens two bedroom small flat. He says people come from all over the world, the u. S. U. K. And even Mainland China to stay. Drawn by a feeling of solidarity with hong kong protesters not to mention an attractive price in an expensive city. 13 a night will get you some of the basic creature comforts you would expect from a hotel and theres no shortage of political statements. Hong kong chief executive featuring in the toilet. Something definitely worth seeing. It is beyond being a hotel it is an exhibition space. I would have been keen to meet steven even if it wasnt a place to stay. Reporter with hong kongs high rent stephen says he is just about breaking even but he will turn guests away if he thinks they are not interested enough in occupy. It is his way of keeping interest in the movement alive. Even as the future becomes less clear. Andrew stevens, cnn, hong kong. Major loss for australian Prime Minister tony abbott and the ruling liberal national party. The government lost 35 seats to the Opposition Labour Party and newman was defeated after one term. Investigators are trying to figure out what caused a massive sevenalarm fire at a brooklyn warehouse. The new York Fire Department says nearly 300 firefighters 300, battled two separate fires at the warehouse early saturday morning. Its unclear if the fires are related and almost 24 hours later the second fire is still burning. The warehouse stored government and hospital records. All that paper fuelled the flames making them extremely hard to extinguish. Those firefighters are battling these flames in just freezing temperatures. Youve got the pictures to show it derek. Yeah. Temperatures were roughly 12 degrees fahrenheit. Oh, goodness. Very, very cold. Well below freezing in terms of celsius. Firefighters jobs perilous ou in its own right but factor in temperatures like that and it is extremely dangerous. What they started to see is their marine unit that helped to back up the fire actually took water from the river, just next to brooklyn which is the east river, and help to extinguish some of these flames. But resulting in the water actually freezing on the protective uniforms that the firefighters actually wear even on their helmets. What an incredibly difficult and challenging job these guys faced. Unbelievable stuff. I was in new york city recently. It is bitterly cold. Look at these temperatures 23 degrees. Even koerld when you factor in the winds, especially across the new england coast, boston actually below freezing at the moment when you factor in the windchill values. Possibly in to upstate new york. Were going to watch for the possibility of upwards of a snow of snow in some locations. Some uncertainty with different computer models. All the parties met on saturday but discussions quickly fell apart. These talks come as more civilians are killed in eastern ukraine. Senior International Correspondent is there. Reporter peace talks set up to fail. Many say it was unclear to both sides when it was supposed to start, friday or was it saturday or who was suppose ed to attend . Were ukrainians supposed to be represented by an exofficial. One diplomate with good knowledge of what happened in the room said the talks lasted two hours. A poisonous atmosphere and no chance of a regime anytime soon. That puts emphasis back on increasing violence here in the eastern ukraine. We saw how separatists seem to be encircling one town and how many civilians had to flee the ongoing violence there. This road is the one lifeline for a key Ukrainian Village separatists are encircling and its been shelled for days. Ukraine says it has thousands of troops here, but we did not see them. Just the dead. And the destruction that took their lives, 12 reported killed here this day. Debaltseve destroyed. You can hear shelling constantly in the background. So many people left here and so many fled for their lives. But some cannot or wont leave and andtousle over food. The elderly and those who cant leave, she says its scary of course. Were poor. Family with a daughter battling leukemia faces a second fight after their family was exposed to measles in the latest outbreak. We will have their story next. I know. This third shift is rough. Its just a few more weeks max what are you doing up . Its late. I just wanted to have breakast wih you. The Measles Outbreak continues to spread across the United States. 14 state have confirmed cases including pennsylvania and new york. It has traveled far from california. Most cases linked to the outbreak in disneyland in california. That state health Department Says its number of cases jumped 54 in just over a week. Now to 91 cases. For one arizona family the danger for measles is even greater because one of their children already has a weakened immune system from battling another disease. Elizabeth cohen has their story. Reporter one family in double danger. Last week 3yearold maggie and her brother eli were exposed to measles at this clinic near phoenix, arizona. Now eli ten months old and too young to be vaccinated is showing signs of the virus which can cause brain damage and even death. Im obviously scared. I send out texts to my family and Facebook Messages and say please pray for my son. Reporter if eli has measles it is quite likely she gave it to his sister and she could be in danger because maggie has leukemia. Her immune system wiped out by chemotherapy that would have wiped out any immunity from her own vaccine. Whats your biggest fear for maggie . My biggest fear is i lose my child. Or short of that she gets a severe case and becomes deaf. I mean my family has been through enough in the last six months. I mean i know theres worse out there but we have had a rough go of it. I dont want her to have to go through anything else. Reporter we talked to the centers for Disease Control and they told us not to get anywhere near eli or maggie. So we asked their parents to take cell phone video for us. Were also not going to get near their father. Because like many adults he has only limited immunity to the measles. We can talk to their mother however, because blood tests show she has full immunity. This is how the children were put in danger. Four members of one arizona family went to disneyland in december. They refused to vaccinate their children and came down with measles and went to the clinic. That family gave measles to a woman at the clinic and she in turn exposed 195 children including maggie and eli. What would you say to that family if you could talk to them. Your children dont live in your little bubble in a big bubble and my children live with your children. If you dont want to vaccinate your children fine. Dont take them to disneyland. An arizona physician refuses to vaccinate his sons because he says vaccines are toxic. Could you live with yourself if your child got another child sick . I mean really sick complications, even death. Could you live with yourself if that happened . I could live with myself easily. It is an unfortunate thing that people die but unfortunately people die. Im not going to put my child at risk to save another child. Im not going to sacrifice the well being of my child. My child is pure. Its not my responsibility to be protecting their child. Reporter jim jacks a pediatrician says the pain is like a double whammy on top of his daughters cancer. It is a big deal emotionally. Looking back it brings to mind some of the same feeling we had when we first got maggies diagnosis. Reporter for now they can just pray their daughter recovers from leukemia and doesnt get measles. Elizabeth cohen with that story for us. The number of new ebola cases in the three worsthit countries fell to its lowest level in seven months. Finally good news there. Thats according to the World Health Organization which also said guinea liberia and sierra leone had a combined total of 99 new cases for the week ending january 25th. The number of cases continue to fall in liberia and sierra leone but infections if guinea rose from the previous week. The w. H. O. Says the focus shifted to ending the epidemic. We are getting an inside look at what it is is like to be quarantined on suspicion of having ebola. It happened to a belgian video journalist who wasnt feeling well following a trip to west africa. Well he filmed everything that happened after that. Here it is. You can tell people keep their distance. There were Police Officers securing the gas stations where i was waiting for the ambulance. They wouldnt get anywhere near 100 meters. So it really, you know taking precautions. And when i arrived at the hospital there was no one in the hallways. There was nobody anywhere. They have locked down everything so that my bed could get through to the room the isolation room where i stayed for three days. Its weird having people look at you, see you and see you as a threat. As i started feeling better, i started feeling ashamed to be there and having nurses dress up and go through all of these procedures. Good morning. Good morning. I think they realized they were putting themselves at risk. That i was putting them at risk. But at the same time they were trying to make it as nice as possible. Even shaking my hands. At least, thanks to them thanks to their behavior i didnt feel as isolated as i could have been since i was in that tiny room all alone. t going to be worse. I knew i was going to survive. I knew that when i was getting out of that isolation room. So it was easy for me. Someone who actually has the virus, it must be really really frightening. He didnt have it but he certainly went through quite an ordeal when he got back there while they waited. All right. We turn down under next. Where a major tennis match is underway. The latest on the Australian Open mens final happening now. And who will clinch the title. If you plan to travel in the u. S. You need to hear this. 1100 flights are cancelled in the midwest. The match started about an hour ago, and right now the score is get this 44 in the first set. Tie breaker. Looks like a duel on hand perhaps. The pressure is high for both men, but especially murray. Fourtime winner djokovic has never been meeting at Melbourne Park in a semi final or final. But get this should murray win, he would be the first british man in 81 years to clench the australian title. We ask some tennis legends who they think could win with it. Reporter im here at the legends luncheon in melbourne which attracts the biggest names sports ever had and i want to know who they think will win the mens final. I think andy has potential. Serving better and hitting the ball harder. First time i have seen that in a long time. We all like to see when it comes down but you know my heart is for andy. On the other side i like novak as well. I think i will stick with djokovic though i have been incredibly impressed with murray the way he played. I think this is the best i have seen him play in a long time. I havent seen him hungry on the court. He looks hungry. I think murrays come to another level. I think hes playing well. I think hes got a little more variety now and hes very fast. Both players are obviously playing very, very well and andy seems to have a little extra fire as was noticed in his last match. I think my telltale will be if murrays second serve drops off a little bit and he doesnt have that confidence to get up there and really keep it back and deep. I think, looking at djokovics return serve it is so much more powerful than the other players. So that to me is a telltale. All righty. Tilting toward murray. They are in a tie breaker in the first set. Look at who won the womens final there. The Australian Open for the 19th time serena takes home a grand slam title.
