Im natalie allen. Our top story hopes of finding survivors in the south korean ferry disaster are growing demmer by the day, but that isnt stopping the massive rescue operation under way in the yellow sea. Poor visible and choppy seas today have hampered efforts by divers to get inside the sunken ferry. The death toll right now stands at 29 with more than 270 people still missing. Meantime the ships captain has been charged with abandoning his ship, causing Bodily Injury and not taking rescue from other ships. About 12 kilometers from the disaster site, family members continue to watch the under water search from big screen tv at a school gymnasium. Today one man desperate for news about loved ones, lunged at security officers, no one, though, was hurt. Following rault all of the progress of the rescue and operations, they still are continuing pauline to give an all out search for anyone. Reporter they r. And theyre not stopping. This is a 24 hour operation, and, natalie, we just got few figures from the coastguard. The death toll increased by 1, now it stands at 30 identified t. Coast guard today said they were going to make 40 attempts at least. Theyve got 600 divers on standby. They got civilian and government divers. Heres what happened in the overnight hours, divers were able to reach the third level of the ferry, the sunken ferry. They saw three bodies floating inside. They saw this through a window i. They tried to break the window with an axe but they couldnt because of the air pressure and also the conditions as well. Now the Maritime Police are also saying another factor in the difficulty is that the ferry has been sinking. Overnight the police say that it sank at least 10 metres. The conditions are very difficult. During the day the waves were as high as 1 meter and visible is very, very low. The divers under water can only see about 30 cms in front of them. Now the divers have said part of the issue is the conditions, but they also need crane, on the site are four cranes ready to work and stabilize the ship. But heres the catch 22. The cranes are ready, but if you try to move this 6,800 ton ferry, it could displace some of the water and destroy any possible air pockets that may be there that could be a lifeline for any potential survivors. So that is what we are dealing with right now, natalie. And if you look over my shoulder, there is a briefing going on right now here at the harbor front of the. Up see that big crowd of journalists as well as families, they are being briefed, updated the sending time this day, earlier, there was anger and frustration, where family members were saying, why hasnt it taken this long for the search operation to get to this point . Why havent the divers been getting into the ship. So, natalie, there is a lot of frustration, a lot of anger. One woman saying earlier today that im ashamed to be living in this country. Well, you can understand their frustration, now with news that the ferry continues to sink further, more complicateing the search, palmin pauline, we know people are watching from that gymnasium. It has to be a painful and frightening thing there to watch. Reporter yeah, they feel so helpless because this accident site is 20 kilometers out at sea from this harbor point. You are right the families are able to watch this under water feed of what the divers are going through. Most of the families are there at this gymnasium. Many of the families are behind me here at the harbourfront. They also have that feed under one of the tents here remember they were watching it all day. They were alsowalk watching local news. But again, they feel that not enough has been done. We are going into the fourth day. We are past that crucial 72hour mark and they feel that the government hasnt pitched in, in fact, natalie, this is a really interesting point relatives today were saying at the earlier news briefing that some of them have gotten together and they hired their own civilian divers. Some of the divers that theyve hired are a part of this 600plus diving team thats out there between civilians and Government Agencies and the divers who found the three floating bodies in that window, inside the window earlier in the early overnight hours were civilian divers. And the families were saying, why are the civilian divers making discoveries and not the government divers . Thats a very good question and all of those divers, so many of them must be frustrated they cant get there and do their work. Pauline, thank you so much for the latest, as she said, the conditions are making it more challenging. Lets go to samantha moore, shes at the International Weather story watch tack part of the story. Reporter yes, the waves and the currents and the visibility here and the concern, you can see we are between two systems. This is satellite number three showing the earlier szish been that moved through earlier today, we are actually if a bit of a break between systems, but the winds are pretty gusty here right now. Out of the southeast at 13 in milan and jeju island, out of the east at 31 kilometers per hour. Temperatures are cooling at 14 in jeju right now. A little further to the north, it is a half of a kilometer at milan, you can see as we move the time ahead here, visible improving slowly as we head later on into today and then once we get into the Early Morning and overnight hours, we should start to see some improvement once we get into sunday. So that is something to look forward to, for sure. You see how visibility has been affecting things here, though, this is one of the cranes and just with the Poor Visibility in the water, some 30 cms or so, can you only see some 30 cms in front of your mask if are you a diver. The winds rather gusty as we were talking about right now. They, too, look like they will be easing into sunday. In the meantime, we will have the 30 to 40 kilometer gusts we are having to deal with. It looks like the waves will be increasing as we head into the evening hours, they look about a meter as we head into the next 12 hours or so. All right. Sa man that, thanks so much. As we heard from pauline chu, they are holding a news briefing there. We will continue to let you know if there is new information that they are telling the families. Other news we are following, malaysias acting minister says the next days are crucial in determine whack to do next in the search for flight 370. They said the under water drone scouring the area of the indian ocean should be finished within a week. The blue fin 21 is on its seventh mission. If no parts of the plane are found, other options will be explored. I can tell you bluefin 21 is giving clear and sharp images while conducting a mission in the under water search area. However, from all six missions conducted, no contacts have been found to date. I have to stress that this is going to stop the operations but to also consider other approaches, which may include widening t widening the scope and utilizing other aspects that could be relevant in the search. The search will always continue. It is just a matter of approach. We are joined now live, its disappointing that they have nothing to report, but it doesnt sound like they have any plans to back off the search . Reporter thats right, malaysian authorities havent had a specific press conference for over a week now. So there is a lot of expectation around this press conference and what exactly will amount. Of course, all main or key people involved in this investigation were there. You have the acting transport minister hussein. You have the defense minister the ceo of malaysian airlines, the Deputy Foreign minister, the head of the Civil Aviation authority here, but, still, no major announce was really made rnths other than t, any the fact that the next two days will be crucial. Hussein saying we are at a very critical juncture. He basically appealed to everyone to pray hard that something will be found. He said that a search area has been narrowed quite a bit and the search efforts in that narrowed area has also been intensified significantly or will be intensified significantly in the next two day, so that the next two day, really, are very crucial, natalie. Right. And he talked about, if nothing is discovered in the next two days, broadening, of course, if search area and bringing in other assets. What would those be . Reporter thats right. He mentioned a specific committee here in malaysian thats been looking into deploying other assets, looking into commercial companies and malaysian elsewhere as well about possibly have some kind of other assets that could be deployed under water. They have identified a few already. But when that will happen, he did not give a time frame. He had tweeted a few days ago that possibly more assets will be deployed, but we know the australians havent asked for any more assets yet, saying just a few days ago that the bluefin 21 was more than adequate for this search. All right. Thank you for following developments for us. Its unfortunate they dont have anything more. The families are so wanting information. Thank you. We have much more on the hunt for flight 370, also coming up here on cnn newsroom, also, washington pressuring moscow as pro russia separatists refuse to lay down their arms and leave occupied buildings in Eastern Ukraine. Right now, pro russia separatists are refusing to lay down their weapons and lead building theyre occupying in Eastern Ukraine cities. But fake a look at this display, protests, not everyone in Eastern Ukraine agreed with the separatists. Supporters of the few government in kiev rallied in doneetsk. Phil black is live in the eastern city of donetsk. Lets begin with you, phil, there have been protests in the street. Not everyone aligning with the pro separatists. Any sign the separatists are backing down . Reporter no, not really, ever since the sign of that geneva agreement, there has been no change on the ground. Those leaders of the pro separatist movements have categorically rejected that deal saying they werent a part of it, they dont have to follow it. They are refusing the key points, notably, packing up and where relevant laying down weapons as well. So no change. But also no change in the sense that these pro russian separatists have not expanded their control in recent days. There have been no occupations of recent buildings or infrastructure. They have stayed contained up until that point him something of a port perhaps in the crisis here in the east at the moment. Really, the next few days have been key. It has been over the weekend that we have seen a spike in activity by the pro russian and separatist groups in terms of action on the streets and the seizure of government buildings and infrastructure as well. In the coming days, the governments in the west and kiev will be looking to see what russia is doing or saying. Not just publicly because russia has signed on public lip to this agreement, which says these groups in the building need to pack up, go home, lay down their weapons. But the belief in walk an certainly kiev is moscow must also urge these groups privately to do so. There is some skepticism in the west and in kiev as to whether or not the russian government has any real intent to encourage these groups to stop what they have been getting up to. Russia, of course, maintained, has no direct ties, no direct links, no influence with these groups. So it really is because of that die fam ec that there is still ongoing skepticism that the deal in geneva. Programs a diplomatic break through may not lead to much on the ground. Natalie. Lets go to moscow, it does seem all eyes are on moss go and the government there to see if it can pressure these groups to stand down. Reporter absolutely. And as phil was saying, russias position is we dont have direct ties or links with these people. It is up to them to leave their buildings, but the diplomatic process has been ongoing. They had another telephone conversation, promised to keep on talking. Russia is emphasizeing its points, which is there must be no use of force there and continuing to put pressure on kiev on walk to look towards a National Dialogue of the various regions in you craven or to sit together and discuss constitutional reform. One interesting thing the kremlin spokesperson said, on the troop levels at the border, which russia always maintained until now, they were there except for training purposes, which for this extended period of time would seem a fawn sense, really. Now, he has admitted that extra troops were added to those already positioned along the border because of the volatility of the situation in ukraine. But no sign from the russians that they intend to withdrawal their troops, which the west has consistently called for as an attempt to deescalate the situation. As phil says, for the sign that those pro russian groups when you crane, within the eastern cities are backing down, irrespective of what russia is or isnt telling them privately. So geneva at this stage doesnt look as though it has achieved all that much and russia certainly is saying to the west because of this continued threat of more sanctions that d. C. Hasnt taken off the table that swaug u washington shouldnt treat russia like a foughty school girl. So russia is very angry, really, at the way it is treated internationally and doesnt team to be saying that it is able to bear much influence over the ground. Well see what happens yet. Not much yet.
