Covid19 pandemic head on calling his administrations undertaking a wartime undertaking. Today, the pandemic is claiming almost 410,000 american lives. Biden is saying that the u. S. Death toll will likely top half a million next month. Also tonight, Senate Minority leader Mitch Mcconnell is seeking to delay the impeachment trial until february, and will the republicans go along if they get some of the demands in return . Joining us, we are joined by two gentlemen john robert ss and jo reimer. How is the president doing . Well, he is trying to through his staff and crisp orders that he is signing on covid in particular, he is creating the pandemic testing board through today, and that is something that he has talked about for some time, and he says that he is going to be using the defense production act to ramp up manufacturer of vaccines to get that program going, and he is going to impose a mask mandate on federal lands, and this is not going to have a dramatic effect, but it can have some incremental effect, but the president is racing against time, because the things that he needs to do to really move the ball forward to make progress on this Vaccine Distribution are, one, to get the covid relief package that he has got through the congress, and he has to figure out if he can get the republican votes for that, and move it through the normal legislative channels or through the democrats only, and do it through a special procedure called reconciliation, and take some time for the defense production act steps that he is taking to get the pandemic under control which is critical to everything that the president wants to do including getting the economy going again as well. Dr. Reiner, lets talk about the cdc updating the covid guidance ashag the people can get their second dose up to six weeks and mix and match the medication and which company they get it from in exceptional situations, and will people be skeptical of that when the vaccines run out of it . I am skeptical of it, and i dont believe that changing the guidelines are going to be potentially looking at the shortages Going Forward. I am not really worried about the Vaccine AvailabilityGoing Forward unless we are surprised in the next couple of weeks. Johnson and johnson is going to apply for the emergency use authorization for the onedose vaccine and this is a big boost to the supply. It is also going to be logistically much easier to administer, and just requires refrigeration of just one shot. And so i am more concerned about our sort of the lastmile infrastructure and of being able to get the arms into the arms and changing the vaccines is into vaccinations, and that is what we need to do. I think that Biden Administration needs to be more ambitious. We are almost giving 1 million shots a day now, and we need to give 2 million shots a day. If you want to get back to normal by summer, you want the economy to improve, and you want to take a bite out of the enormous death toll, do that. Look, things are Getting Better in the country, and the case rates are dropping dramatically in the country, and we spoke about this last week, and they are unequivocally on the way down, and hospitalization rates are dropping now, and there is a sweet spot now, and more contagious variants that are in the country, and we need to get vaccines is into the arms before they are dominant, and now is the time to do it. I am glad, and thank you for saying that. I also want to get your reaction to dr. Anthony fauci and i was surprised by the reaction that he said it out loud of what it is like to work with a new administration and then we will talk. I take no pleasure at all in being in a situation of contradicting the president so it was really something that you didnt feel that you could actually say something, and there would not be any repercussions about it. The idea that you can get up here to talk about what you know, what evidence, what the science is, and that is it, and let the science speak is somewhat of a liberating feeling. It is an extraordinary statement at the first covid briefing in two months. And is there something to see the experts back front and center. First of all, it is refreshing to hear dr. Fauci say it the way it is. And to hear him brief the public, and just, you know, the public can handle the truth. You know, unlike the last administrations feeling that the pub lic could not handle th truth, the public can handle the truth, but what dr. Fauci and the colleagues learned is that if you have said something that veered away from the party line, you could get sidelined. At the end of february, just as the pandemic was starting, there were 14 cases in the United States at the time, and dr. Nancy misognia said that disruptions were likely and Community Spread was likely and we never heard from her again, and we saw it play out again. And dr. Redfield perp walked again and again after veering from the party lines. So this is a breath of fresh air. Gentlemen we will see you soon. Appreciate it. I want to turn to council john dean, and the Senate Majority leader Mitch Mcconnell wants to delay the impeachment to february to give the attorneys more time, and who does this benefit the most . I think the democrats. As time passes, more information is coming out, and what we dont know is the connections of trump, and what he knew about the operation, and the conspiracy for months of where they planned the takeover of the capitol and with time they will find a much more direct tie of the information trump had and he is just out there speak rather generically about rallying the troops and getting them to march down pennsylvania avenue, and it is going to be more incriminating in other words. And the violent mob storming the capitol is fresh in everybodys mind, and if the trial is delayed too long, and do you think that the outrage will fade . I dont. The witnesses are going to be sitting right in the senate. They remember what they went through. And they are the only people who count in the trial are the jury right there in the senate. They are judges and juries in this instance. So they know what happened, and it is the how the case is built as it becomes more damaging for trump, and the stronger the case is going to become. And it is a question of whether there is key witnesses who might be involved, and don, also, the possibility that this trial could be done before it goes to the full senate before a special impeachment committee. This has been done with judges, and we have a former president , and there is no reason that he has to have a full senate trial, so there is room in the rules to do this in a Pretrial Committee level than take it to the full senate. So lets talk about this who trump has hired, butch bowers a lawyer from South Carolina, hired him for his defense, and he is likely going to have to deal with more and more videos like this one emerging daily, and i want to play it, but i want to warn you that there is prof profanity. Here it is. You are outnumber and there is a fucking million here we were invited here. We were invited by the president of the United States. So john, to your point, there is more evidence coming out, and more people being arrested and we start to learn more about the suspects and what have you, and is this going to complicate trumps defense do you believe . It could. Im not sure that he has the right lawyer, and one of the mistakes that nixon made is that he brought in a outsider who didnt know washington. From what i have been able to dig out about mr. Bowers, he does not have any washington experience and he was connected with the department of justice in 2007 and 2008 in the Civil Rights Division for some voting matter, but he does not know his way around washington, and that is going to hurt the president. All right. John dean, thank you. So it seems like Mitch Mcconnell is telling the democrats, i will block you know unless you promise to let me block you later. Is he holding the senate hostage . Its a reason to come together. Its a taste of something good. A taste we all could use right now. So lets make the most of it. And make every sandwich count. With oscar mayer deli fresh i want to break free vo ready to break free . Its time to get away to a place where we can finally be free. ive got to break free plan your future getaway with norwegian. Sail safe. Feel free. So tonight, democrats are technically the Majority Party in the senate and new yorks senator Chuck Schumer is the majority leader, but they dont have control yet thanks for the maneuvering of the gop. And so the analysts plural john avalon and paul barnstein. So far, john, they are buckling to demands and is Mcconnell Holding the senate hostage . What is this . In terms of things Going Forward, yes. Democrats dont want to give away the option if the democrats are going to be as objectionist as they have been. And the senate is not as majority as the house, and you have two in the Center Mansion and kristen sinma who says that it is our intention to keep it the way it is or go back to 50 50 who didnt make a firm commitment, and it is blown up for judgment in the past, and they have to operate in good faith, but they say why would we give this up to Mitch Mcconnell when he is now in the minority. So ron, mcconnell is going to block the control to the dems until they promise to uphold the rule to allow him and the dems to block anything that they want to block do i have that right . Yeah, you do. It is a good way to put it. First of all, the filibuster, as i understand it, there is not a precedent for filibustering in the organizing resolution of the senate as mcconnell is threatening here and blocking the majority from organizing and thus holding it up that way, and second, even if the democrats somehow agreed to this, there is no way to be binding. As mcconnell knows, they could later come back and change it. So why is he doing it . He is doing it to make a statement here to kind of show his power, and to kind of force the democrats to back down, and you know, i was there in 2009 when he said to my colleague at National Journal at the time, Major Garrett that his principle goal, mcconnells, principle legislative goal was the make barack obama a oneterm pr president , and look at this maneuvering and criticizing bidens actions, it is looking at that he is heading down the same road again. Ron, the minority leader Chuck Schumer has not said that he would change the filibuster role, but he does not want to rule it out, and are the democrats thinking back to the days when the republicans as you mentioned obstructed obama at every step, and do they really have any recourse other than to stick to their guns right now . No, no. Certainly, they have no recourse other than, no way they will let Mitch Mcconnell to decide the rules of which the senate operates as the minority, but this decision of the filibuster is not going to be put off two year, but initially, bidens goal and the white house goal on the initial rescue plan on covid is to try to do this through the regular order to get 10 republicans to vote for it in the senate, and break a filibuster, but if they cant, they have the option on something of what is called reconciliation to do it by the majority rule. The problem that they have got is that Everything Else doesnt have that, and where this is really going to come to a head is on the Racial Equity agenda, and a new Voting Rights act, and police reform, and democracy reform, and immigration reform, and this is going to be all of issues to pass in the house, and stack up in the senate if the filibuster is maintained and the pressure within the Democratic Coalition to allow Mitch Mcconnell to use what president obama called the jim crow relic to block a reform, and i dont know how Chuck Schumer and president obiden go back to the Africanamerican Community say, sorry, but you so elect ten more senators to do that. But they say we elected the senate and we get the gavels, but can they wait it out, john . Do they have options here . Look, this is as narrow as it gets and 50 50 and through the tiebreaker of Kamala Harris that gives the democrats the control, and the whole point, and ron is right about reconciliation, and joe biden wants to do it around the regular order and you have a president who has more legislative experience and loyalty to the senate than any president since lyndon johnson, but it is going to take the republicans and the democrats to reason together, and if the republicans do the instinctive obstruction that defined the roles in the obama year, the democrats will throw it out the first thing they get, but the best thing now, especially two democrats who dont quantity to give up the filibuster is to Work Together and dont take it off of the table, but hold it in reserve if they revert, because the filibuster was never to be thrown down for everything like they did for obama to block nominee after nominee, and more were blocked by Mitch Mcconnell and co than it had been in history so we have abuse impulse. Devious. And obama said it was only used once to block people who looked like me. That is sinister stuff. Okay. Thank you, both. I will see you soon. President biden wants to unite the country, but not everybody in washington agrees with what that is. The newly elected dnc chairs weighs in. And now, the newly charged people in the capitol riot. People did aid and abet, there is more than just comments from their colleagues here. There is going to be prosecution, if they aided and abetted an insurrection in which people died. In a year of changes. Dont take chances on your taxes. Be 100 certain with jackson hewitt. Well get your taxes done right, guaranteed. President biden making it clear that addressing racial equality is a priority in the first days of the administrations. And he has rescinded the trump 1776 commission, and also the order that limited diversity training in federal agencies, and also addressed the threat of White Supremacy, and a threat that he says must be eliminated. Jamie hair, thank you for joining us, and congratulations for the chairmanship of the dnc, and now, history was made with Kamala Harris sworn in and two democrats of georgia sworn in, and a black man and jewish man, and progress, and clearly, but we have seen that there is a huge problem with racism, and division, and so what do you see is needed next . Well, we need joe biden. Joe biden, and i was talking with somebody the other day, and they asked, well, do you think that joe biden is going to be a good president . Joe biden didnt win the presidency for a few times, but my grandma always taught me, don, that we have a plan as individuals, and the lord has a plan for us, and that sometimes the plans are not the same, but we need to follow the plan. So i think that this is the moment for joe biden. He was made for this moment. We need somebody who is empathetic who has gone to hell and gone back and someone who understands the power of joy and bringing folks together. Joe biden knows that. He understands that. And that is why he is the president for this moment. But he has to reach the other side who has not been to this point willing to even accept that he is the actual president of the United States. That is a tall order, jamie. Well, it is a tall order. But look at the speech that he gave yesterday. He did not talk about himself or donald trump, but he talked about america and in bringing us altogether, and he has been consistent and almost like a broken record. I remember it when he came here in the president primary in South Carolina and folks said that joe biden is saying the same old thing about unity and folks coming together, and he has been like a broken record time and time again talking about this issue of bringing this country together and healing us. And you are right, that some people dont want to heal at this moment in time. But that is okay. You take the time that you need, but eventually, you are going to have somebody with open arms who is going to say move forward together. Okay. I want you to help me to understand this, and you mentioned the speech and what he talked about and i am not sure how people got this out of the speech, but he is condemning White Supremacy in the speech, but some republicans are twisting the speech into the rebuke of an attack. This is senator rand paul. If you listen to speech, and much of it is thin ly veiled innuendo calling us white supremists, and every name in the book. I did not hear that. If republicans like rand paul cant see that number one, it is a problem, and that is not a personal attack, what is that saying about them . Well, listen, i think that rand paul needs to listen to what joe biden is talking about. Listen, i would hope that every single senator in the United States senate, every single congressman in the u. S. House could all condemn White Supremacy, because that is not who we are as a nation. This is about the greatest asset that we have as a country is our diversity, and we all need to feel like we are a part of this american experiment that is taking place right now. Joe biden is about bringing us together. But, at the same time, he is very clear that if you believe, or if you a white supremist, you have no place in this america. I agree with him. I would hope that all of our leaders could agree with him as well. Now if rand paul is that is excuse me, but is that a coordinated effort and not from just rand paul, but other gop leaders and coming from conservative media as well, do you think that is something they got together as a talking point so they could win over some of the those, the actual people who went to storm the capitol or some of the trump voters who believe that way . Well, it could be a talking point, but this is the things don, and hopefully they have learned this, and another lesson from the grandma, you play with fire, you will be burnt. So stop fanning the flames of the hatred and division in this country. Find ways to bring people together. You know, and these people know joe biden, and they know that what is in his heart, and what he is trying to do as a nation, and what they should all be doing as well bringing us all together to move forward to address the challenges that people are dealing with right now, covid, unemployment, how this economy is craters and how people in the small communities and Rural Communities are struggling with, and i would hope that the senators would stop thinking of running for the next president ial election, and start to protect the people they took the oath to protect and defend and serve and this is what joe biden is trying to do, focusing on the people and not the politics. Jamie, you a man who ran a competitive race in deep south, and what did you learn to make the democrats more competitive in red states and rural states . Well, what i learn and we all learned is that you have to organize, organize, organize. We were able to make history in the last election and this past january and a few weeks ago that when we democrats were able to win not one but two special elections in georgia, and we now have an africanamerican and a jewishamerican senators the both representing georgia and they won convincingly. That is because of stacey abrams, Natasha Brown and so many grass roots organizations and the Georgia Democratic party, and they organized and they went into the communities and they did not parachute in two months before the election, and they stayed there and addressed the issues that people care about. And the success of the Democratic Party that we have to transform from a political organization, and we have to become a community organization, and embedded in the community, and helping people to address with the issues they are dealing with right now. I am glad that you mentioned Natasha Brown, because she does not get the credit she should for organizing and registering a ton of people to get to the polls to vote. Thank you, jamie, and congratulations again. Thank you, my friend. Take care now. And you heard jaime, and to combat racism and i recently wrote a book that i believe could help, this is the fire and it is full of fearless conversations that i have with my friends and family and preorder it wherever you get books, and i hope you will check it out. And now, more capitol arrests that are part of the groups that trump famously told to stand back and standby. We will bring you the latest. As of tonight, more than 120 defendants have been charged with federal crimes in the deadly insurrection at the capitol two weeks ago as as the investigation heats up hundreds more are expected to be charged. Lets discuss with a cybersecurity expert at the university of toronto, and cnns Counter Terrorism philip mudd. And philip, i want to start with you, 120 defendants all facing criminal charges over this capitol riot, and are the investigators strategically going after those with the most serious crimes or those who were Leaders Within the mob . Going after can you hear me, phil . Yeah, i got you clear. Okay. Yeah, a couple of things that id be thinking about here first. There is a ton of Digital Media out there that is stuff from the capitol and the stuff that the fbi has picked up from the capitol that people have sent in from exboyfriends and girlfriends and stuff that was picked up from the peoples facebook pages, and the first stuff is stuff that they can prosecute, and they want people off of the streets as a deterrent to people who might be showing up down the road, and they want them off of the streets. And let me ask you, because i was not sure if you could hear me, but are they going after everybody on the video, and matter the status of what they did or whoever they can get to first . I think they would go to who it is easiest to make a case against first and who they can find. Don, the interesting thing is who they will go after not charged now, but the people they will charge in future for conspiracy for a couple of reasons. It is tough, don, to make a conspiracy case. It is a lot tougher than looking at a video and saying that you went into the capitol, and you tresz pas trespassed and that is a misdemeanor, and you went in with the intent to do what they did is a much different case. That is also a 20year case in federal court, and that is a big deal. The last thing theyd say, don, the most interesting thing that i think is going after these groups like the three percenters and the oath keepers with the conspiracy chargers, because down the road, are they going after these groups before they do something, and say that we see that you are planning. We see that there is a conspiracy and a state or against the federal government, and we are going to make the conspiracy charge before you actually breach the territory in a place like the u. S. Capitol, and that is interesting, because i dont know if that would have happened three weeks ago. John, in florida, the proud boys leaders joseph biggs is now facing charges with organizing groups to be there, and charging on parler to be blending in with what they wore, and the fbi believes he wore an earpiece and he had a wa walkietalkie device there. And yes, you can see that throughout that affidavit. He is interesting, because he is showing up early doing a Group Picture that the proud boys contingent did in front of the capitol and then he later makes an entrance and that is showing up in the affidavit, and he is not wearing the traditional proud boys colors, but he has a walkietalkie and at one point he looks at the cameras and one of the millions of social pieces that says this is awesome. He told a british tabloid that he was just in there to visit the restroom, but i think that we will see about that. It is clear that the fbi is looking at the fact that the proud boys who were wearing squiggly earpieces and Communications Gear is in communication and that is not something that you do for a normal protest or walk in the park. And so he said that he was in there to use the restroom or pushed in with the crowd and he giving order and is that pr premeditation or does that matter in this type of case . It matters, but there is a difference of what you think and know, and what a defense attorney is going to say. If i were them, i would say, look, he went to a demonstration, and that the commander in the chief, the president of the United States organize and he wanted to talk to his friends and they like to talk on walkietalkies, and they are wan thathana be u. S. Marine and so are you concerned that they will have another attack like this without being detected . Yes, and not about the system they used there, but what is encoded or encrypted communications off of the web, and i had problems with those when i was at the bureau years ago and the ability for them to communicate without the bureau to communicate. But once you say that you want to communicate violence and the breach of the security at the capitol, i want to watch you, and don, in the last 15 years i cant, and that makes me nervous as a former investigator. And so, what is next with all of this . Well, this is a good question, and i wanted to respond to the encryption thing, and evidence that there was an issue is long here, and it is not encrypted, because it is all over the internet, and so i am concerned that we will back in an encryption debate before intelligence gather, and what i am trying to get the groups and the organizations that were present, and what is worrying me is if you are looking at the oath keepers as of today, they are going to talk about the leaders to go to ground and bug out, and that kind of thing is making me nervous. And thank you, gentlemen. Confused, duped, letdown, and conspiracy theorists are feeling about leaving qanon and leaving in disarray. Stay with us. Act expressionism. When you start with a better hot dog from oscar mayer, you can do no wrong. Its all for the love of hot dogs. i want to break free vo ready to break free . Its time to get away to a place where we can finally be free. ive got to break free plan your future getaway with norwegian. Sail safe. Feel free. , so President Biden taking the oath of office dealt a blow to qanon with the outlandish theory of a socalled pedophilia and satanic ring would be rounded up and executed. That did not happen, and leaving some to believe they had been duped. Let me read some comments that poured in. Anyone else feeling beyond letdown right now . This is pure hell i am going through. It honestly feels like we were sold out by trump, and robbed and filled with grief and angered, and at the time we needed trump and q the most, they both shut up and left. Joining me is the head of the digital policy and strategy of the institute of strategic dia dialogue, joe biden is president. The storm never came. Now there is a reckoning happening on the q message boards. What are you learning . Yeah, don, it was incredible. Even up until right before biden was inaugurated, a lot of qanon followers still believed that trump was going to implement martial law and was going to use the military to stop biden from being sworn in. And in the early hours of Inauguration Day morning, we were out doing live overnight coverage, and we met a trump supporter who was streaming live on youtube. And he believed that Conspiracy Theory. He believed that biden was not going to be sworn in. And we caught up with him yesterday afternoon, after biden became president. Have a listen. Do you feel like youve been duped, that youve been tricked in some way . No, the way i felt, when i saw i was waiting up until the minute when he said i joe biden im thinking to myself, my life is about to completely change because ive been saying im either a conspiracy theorist or a prophet. Do you think maybe you were wrong with joe biden being sworn in, you might be wrong about the whole election rigging thing . No. Im convinced the election was a fraud. So thats the issue. He can see that he was duped by one Conspiracy Theory, but he insists on continuing the stop the steal, the election rigging conspiracy. And also he believes, by the way, that it wasnt Trump Supporters who were responsible for the violent insurrection, that it was somehow left wing activists. He is either a conspiracy theorist or a prophet. Im not sure which conclusion he came to. Did he ever tell you . He was very confused yesterday. Yeah, im sure. Chloe, this is is this an opportunity to bring some of these people back into the light when truth may be dawning on them . How do you do that, if thats possible . I mean, we can only hope that there is an opportunity for that. As donie mentioned, its a pretty chaotic landscape in terms of reactions to this in the Qanon Community writ large. Inside that group that is disappointed, angry, i think were going to have to watch for two different reactions. One of which you mentioned that people may have a way to potentially exit from this Conspiracy Theory movement that will require enormous patience, a lot of work from friends and family probably, if they still have friends and family around them, to have long, careful conversations, nonjudgmental conversations to help them come out. Part of the problem with that is these kind of movements arent just ideologies. They also become the social structure of these people. By moving out or exiting, they lose all of that. It can be a difficult process. But the other thing we have to worry about is a lot of those people who are angry or disillusioned may turn even more extreme. And there are huge risks of radicalization to extremism, for example, not just conspiracy beliefs. Among these communities, weve seen active recruitment in white supremacist channels in accelerationists channels, militia channel. They target maga types, qanon types and now r now in spaces that are much more connected, these more extreme channels. Let me ask you. Some of these followers are still refusing to see that they have even been conned. Theyre posting things like this. And im going quote here. What would be the point of giving up right now . I agree. Im keeping the faith. Stop crying into your popcorn and keep fighting for the truth. This, this is not the end. And some even threatening violence. The only fighting that matters from here on out is done with a gun. What happens to these people . Is there a real chance that they can resort to violence, chloe . Sadly, i think there is a real chance of that. Were facing very real domestic Terror Threat from here in the u. S. That we need to get ahead of in terms of research, policy, law enforcement. The overlap between qanon and extremism is a fragile one. Its not fair to say thats an exact match. But when weve seen these kind of channels from extremist groups and terrorist groups trying to reach out to potentiallydisillusions qanon audience, who seek to do violence against government or against civilians. So its definitely something were going to have to watch out for very seriously. Donie, lets talk about ron watkins. He wrote this online. He said we need to keep our chins up and go back to our lives as best we are able. We have a president sworn in and it is our responsibility as citizens to respect the constitution regardless of whether or not we agree with the specifics or details. Go back to their lives, respect the constitution . What is the reaction been, donie . These are the people who believe the wildest things. These are the true believers. Yeah, thats a lot of gas lighting there from ron watkins, the guy who has been pushing absolute nonsense, especially since election day about the election being rigged. Look, President Trump has left this town, but a lot of things have not changed, right . There is a lot of people out there who want to believe all of this stuff still. There is still a lot of facebook is still essentially a cesspool of misinformation. There is that whole right wing ecosystem of trump supporting media, the oans, the newsmaxs and certainly elements of fox news. We may have a new administration, but this problem is going to stay. And i do fear that those few qanon supporter, followers that were seeing who realize they have been duped and might see the light, they may be just the minority. Wow. Donie, chloe, always fascinating to talk to both of you. Thank you so much. Thanks. Thanks for watching, everyone. Our coverage continues. Not until im sure.
