Suspects in the deadly capitol riot and making more than 100 arrests. Also tonight, president elect b biden proposing a nearly 2 trillion plan to give relief to millions. We thank them for joining. John, the president , the Trump Presidency is unraveling. Hes vengeful, lashing out, banning any talk of Richard Nixon. What can we expect from trump the final few days in office . I wont have to ask you that question in, what, five days. Look, its a Dumpster Fire and its going to be that way through the end. Youve got aides fleeing, associates fleeing, a very small number of people around trump taxpayer west wing is largely empty. Not. That people showing up, and donald trump is left in the torment of knowing that he has been disgraced in a way no other president has. And its not surprising that he would been mentioned of Richard Nixon. When donald trump came of age as a young man, Richard Nixon was the epitome of a failed president. Watergate forced him to become the only president to resign. And that disgrace is something that donald trump is now in the same league with. In fact, when you look at what donald trump has done, the nature of his presidency, hes worse than Richard Nixon. He makes Richard Nixon look like a titanic statesman sop. So donald trump is in a bad way. Hes looking at financial pressure and trouble when he leaves as epitomized by the loss of that Golf Tournament and legal trouble as well. Whether he tries to pardon himself or not, hes got big big problems and he knows it. Nixon resigned before they impeached him, so he was never officially impeached. Donald trump has been impeached twice so this is beyond Richard Nixon. Ron, were told he doesnt thousands of americans are dying by the day, and this is whats consuming him right now . Thats the point. Thats been the story for months and months now. As we have been living through i think the greatest National Security crisis in the country since world war ii and maybe before that. The death toll is almost unimaginable. I live in l. A. County, which is being taken to its knees by the mag attitude of the virus outbreak, and the president has simply been awol for months from his job. Hes like the navy captain that walked under bridge when the ship was under fire to save himself. Whats striking again, we just come back to the same story for months and months, not a peep of complaint from republicans in congress as he has really abandoned americans at this critical moment. And even the Impeachment Vote yeses ten republican vote to remove him, but you can certainly argue this was the single most egregious act by a president ever. I refer to Doug Brinkley if he can find something else. But i think when liz cheney said no president has his oath of office for thoroughly, i think shes right. To look at only ten republicans think this is worth worthy of sanction, its its head scratching. Were learning the president has been talking to steve bannon of all people in recent weeks. Whats this all about . Well, steve bannon was one of the architects of his campaign in 2016. Hes nuts like donald trump is nuts. Hes facing federal fraud charges, and thats the kind of person thats left for donald trump to be a confidant. Because the more respectable class of advisers hes had around him have been forced out or left of their own accord. Steve bannon has encouraged him in these fantasies about trying to overturn the election, and donald trump is drawn so people who will tell him what we wants to hear. Its instrumental for steve bannon to suck up to donald trump, because donald trump in the final days of the presidency has the power to pardon steve bannon, and it would not surprise anyone if President Trump used that power in that way. Gentleman, always a pleasure. Ill see you soon. Probably tomorrow night. Well see. Thank you. I want to bring in now cnns senior justice correspondent evan perez and cnns counterterrorism analyst philip mudd. Philip, its been a while. You doing good . Thank you. Lets start with you. Daniel hodges is speaking out against his experience in the riots. He was pinned against a door. I want you to listen to what he said. They were trying to rip my mask off. He was able to rip away my baton and beat me with it. He was nearly foaming at the mouth. The absolute zealotry of these people, they 100 believe they were right, and they were the patriots and no one would get in their way. It is stunning that these insurrectionists were willing to do anything to achieve their goal. It is. I got get on an airplane in two weeks and i had a friend text me i double mask when i travel, a paper mask and a fabric mask. My friend said, because youre on cnn, you got wear a hat. That never occurred to me where i go to go into an airport and be concerned. Im not in a capital, im in an airport in charlotte, north carolina. I think to be clear, we are focused too much on donald trump. Donald trump is representative of what is happening in america. Americans are saying, look, civil discourse doesnt matter to me. A country that was built on immigrants doesnt matter to me. Immigrants are not welcome in this country, despite the fact that i came, and myself included, came from a family of immigrants. I think the most disturbing aspect of the last four years in america is not the president , its the president has exposed an america that most of us and i mean more than 50 , are unk uncomfortable with, and that america is showing up at the capitol throwing fire extinguishers at cops saying i want to joey turn the election. Its not about donald trump its about america. Evan perez, hello. If you look at this video, you see him there, hes got his the gear on. He was beaten by rioters. Listen to how he describes what happened. I was just trying to fight as best i could. Guys were stripping me of my gear. These are rioters, pulling my badge off my chest. They ripped my radio. Off of my vest, starting pulling like ammunition magazines from their holder on my belt. And then some guy started getting a hold of my gun and they were screaming out, um,en why, kill him with his own gun. At that point, you know, it was justlfpreservation. You know, how do i survive this situation . I thought about using deadly force. I thought about shooting people. And then i just came to the conclusion that if i was to do that, i might get a few, but im not going to take everybody, and theyll probably take my gun away from me and that will give them the justification they were looking for to kill me if they didnt already made that up in their minds. So the other option i thought of was trying to appeal to somebodys humanity. And i just remember yelling out that i have kids. And it seemed to work. I mean, wow. It goes to what phil just said. Evan, this fits exactly with what you have been reporting. This investigation goes on and on, were going to learn so much more about how bad this could have been. Imagine what were going to learn when that body cam footage comes out, evan. Don, i got tell you that its a Public Service what you just did, playing the clips of these two officers giving us, for the first time, perhaps in their own words, what they went through. This is what i have been hearing from you know, talking to federal Law Enforcement in that building. And they told me that the metropolitan police, the Washington Police and local police here, had to fight their way into the building. They came to the aid of the Capitol Police who were overwhelmed, outnumbered, outgeared by these people who came radicalized. They had been radicalized by the president and stuff the president is saying about a stolen election and hell bent on trying to capture members of congress. Its clear. You can see that in the court papers, including tonight. The prosecutors have said that this is what they wanted to do. So those two officers are describing the hell they went through. Mike sherwin described it as armed combat in that building. What these officers did was they bought time so the security who was protecting the leaders of congress to be able to get out to their hiding place and then get out of the building. They bought important time to save their lives. The officer told me the backup, when they were being called to come in he said hes on the street. He hasnt worn a uniform since picture day. He puts on this uniform. They were all coming in as backup. He said the guys protecting that door, where you see them going heave ho and the car door, he was relieving guys and others who had been doing it for 40 minutes. He said the chemicals they were using, they had more and better than the police. Yeah, they were using bear spray that had a farther reach. Its really unbelievable. Listen, guys good to have you on. See you soon. So many of the rioters at the capitol committed crimes in full view of cameras and were learning more about them tonight. From january 6th alone weve already identified over 200 suspects. So we know who you are if youre out there. And fbi agents are coming to find you. Er deli fresh its not just a sandwich, far from it. The fbi director Christopher Wray confirming tonight they have identified over 200 suspects for the capitol hill attacks. Over 100 arrests have already been made. One of the suspects is Peter Francis sager. Hes seen on this video beating a Police Officer with an american flag. Heres what he had to say the day of the riot. Everybody in there is a disgrace. That entire building is filled with treasonous traitors. Yes, sir death is the only remedy for whats in that building. Every single one of those capitol Law Enforcement officers, death is the remedy. They have to find their own. They have defied their oath. This time the bible wow. Death is the only remedy. Our Senior National correspondent Alex Marquardt jo joins me now. Im so glad youre okay. You were out in the crowd and handled yourself okay. Glad youre around. Thanks for joining us tonight. The video and sound from Peter Francis sayinger is chilling. What are you learning about him . It was disgusting. There were so many Blue Lives Matter flags out there at the same time. The sheer hypocrisy is astounding. You can hear in that video he clearly felt a lot of anger towards the people who work in that building. According to federal prosecutors sager was identified by two confidential informants, including one who admitted to investigators he was in the video of that beating of the Police Officer. You heard in that bite he thought the lawmakers and people working inside the building terror treasonous and needed to be killed. Now hes claiming the person he was beating was a Police Officer. This is from the Court Documents. He thought the person he was striking was antifa. Now, the Court Documents also note the words metropolitan police were clearly visible on the officers uniform. Now he has been charged with civil disconduct. These people stub their toe and go, antifa made me fall. We heard that from lawmaker as well that was antifa. That has been debunked. The authorities said no evidence that was antifa in the crowd. It was all maga. Up next, lets talk about the man seen here with a Confederate Flag in the capitol. Kevin seefried. He was among the first to breach the capitol with his son hunter. Whats the latest on a him . This is one of the most notorious cases. We think its seefried. Hes been one of the biggest target for the fbi since january 6th. He was extremely visible because of the huge flag he was carrying through the halls of congress. Both father and son, they were taken into custody this morning in delaware. They told the fbi they had come to d. C. To hear the president speak and then they followed someone with a bull horn, they said to a capitol, and once they got there, Hunter Seefried punched through the glass of a window, they got through the building walked through the halls with that battle flag, which kevin the father says he flies at his home in delaware. The father son duo were identified after son hunter bragged to a coworker about being in the capitol with his father. Alex, another suspect from chicago, kevin lyons posted a map on instagram of his route to d. C. And a photo of Nancy Pelosis name plate above her office door with the post, whos house . Our house. Wow. What did you dig up on him . Not very subtle, not very discreet, and he was a long way from home ken lyons hes been charged with two federal charges. The feds found him thanks to his Instagram Account you just pointed out. He posted the map saying they was headed to d. C. , as so many people said, to stop the steal. Initially he would not admit he was part of the insurrection, but the fbi showed him a picture he posted himself and then taken down, to which he responded, wow, youre pretty good. That was only up for an hour. Yes, the fbi is pretty good at that. He later emailed the fbi with links to videos that he had taken writing to i guess his point of contact at the fbi, hello, nice fbi lady, here are the links to the videos. Then signed off, let me know if you need anything else. Kevin lyons. So, don, he seems to be more polite and helpful than the others but very much involved in this rioting, which all jokes aside was a horrendous event, a stain on this country. Don . Wow. Okay. Thank you, alex. Again, glad youre safe. Well see you soon. A cybersecurity researcher who was monitoring stop the steal was shocked by what we all saw unfold at the capitol and as he started trying to piece together the events of his twitter feed, thousands of people started chiming in with more information. Hes a senior at the citizens lab and joins me now. Good to see you. We have been talking about the arrests of Peter Francis sager, the man seen in the video beating a Police Officer with that an american flag. What role is online information gathering, saying playing in the apprehension of people like him . Well, i think your reporter alex kind of captured that mixture of absurdity and horror of the events of the 6th. But as mr. Rogers says, look for the helpers. You can find them online. Thousands of people are trying to parse through. There are different groups of folks trying to surface clues and often by processes trying to identify who they are. Let me put up video for to you listen to and then well talk about it. So, here it is. Can we put it on . The bombs bursting in air gave proof through the night that our flag was still there so, its interesting that theyre singing that and theyre, as you see them waving, you hear the crowd singing the National Anthem as a line of people in helmets and what looks like Tactical Gear march up those capitol steps. Its really chilling. What do you know about the people who showed up for this riot . I think what were learning is there are lots of different kind os people. Youve got to folk who are posting it, instagraming it, whose particular vision thought we were going to arrive at the center and the cracken was going happen. Then there were the men trying to move in silence and violence. I think we saw them moving up in the crowd. Those are the ones we have to urgently understand in part because of what they telegraph. We see oath keepers, which is one of the largest antigovernment extremist militias in the United States. Then we see lots of local militia groups like the ohio state regular and other small groups. Anyone around 1995 is hearing an echo right now. As more of the rioters is identified, do you have a warning for people asking them not to broadcast on social media the names of anyone they suspect having been involved. Whats the danger there . Thats right. I think its critically important although people want to help, and they are definitely helping, people sometimes have the instinct to share things they shouldnt, like naming people whose napes are not confirmed. Thats a bad move because it can cause harm that cant be taken back. I think what were seeing is efforts to take these things maturing and moving towards processes that are more considered and careful, which i think is the right way to go. Theres also videos showing rioters discussing the floor plan of the capitol. Im sure youve seen it. Were going to play it. Showing just how determined they were. Lets play some of it and then well talk. Theres also two doors in the other room. One is a and one to the right when you go in. So, people should probably coordinate together if youre going to take the building. Take this building. Thats shocking. Yeah, i mean, this is the weird cross between a pta voice and insurrection. What that comes from is a woman whos leaning in using a mega phone and directing rioters. One of the other things she says is, i have been in this building before. You need to break that window over there. Right now were identifying the people who were visible. You can see their faces. We have a sense of who they are. I think there are a lot of nervous people now who are linked to this, maybe are in d. C. , maybe are hoping they focus on the folks on the ground there. Thank you so much. Really appreciate you joining us. Thanks. Appreciate you, don. Theres no love lost republicans split on whether or not to convict trump. Im going the ask a senator on the Judiciary Committee whether or not they have a chance. Plus, the racist message in the riot. Its a question that has to be asked. Was it something about the way they looked that caused Law Enforcement to look at them differently . I dont know. But there are a few indications of how many of them might vote to convict trump now that hes been impeached by the house for inkroiting the deadly capitol riot. With trump facing a second impeachment trial in the senate, his lawyers are expected to argue that his speech before the riot is protected by the fist amendment. Joining me now, mazie hirono, a member of the Judiciary Committee. Hello, don. Thank you. Good to see you. Youre going to need 17 republicans to convict President Trump. The Majority Leader Mitch Mcconnell is indicating he thinks President Trump committed impeachable offenses. Will the gop fall in line if he votes to convict . I dont think theyll all fall in line. I dont think Mitch Mcconnell is going to flip the caucus. So, the thing is that this impeachment trial, which is very different from the first impeachment trial is this trial, we were all there. We were there. We heard the president. We heard what he said. We saw what happened. And so, yes, we need to decide whether the president in fact incited an insurrection on another branch of government. And i say that happened. The second is to prevent the president from ever Holding Public office again. Its just stunning to me that yet your many colleagues some of your colleagues in the house and senate voted to try to have the election overturned. Yes. Are you worried about the impeachment trial taking away from president elect bidens priorities . He wants the focus to be on covid and the economy. Can you do both . Yes, we can. Thats what happened in the first impeachment trial, which convenes in the afternoon, and we can get this done in the morning. I think its really important that president bidens help our country with additional checks for individuals and a National Vaccination program. These are really important initiatives that we need to pass. And i expect that a demo democratically controlled senate, we set the agenda that these matters will come to the floor for a vote. Senator tom cot ton is sayin he opposed impeachment because hell have left office. Does that matter . No, because theres nothing in the constitution that says the president gets a free pass if he does something impeachable in the last few weeks or days of his term. In addition, tom is missing the second vote that were going to take, which is to prevent the president from ever Holding Public office. I think thats important. Senator, thank you. And im jealous that youre in honolulu and im here. Everyone take care, stay safe, be kind. We will get through this together. I second that. Thank you so much. Appreciate it. See you soon. Aloha. A riot filled Confederate Flags, nooses, nazi symbols. Not everyone carried that, but what did they think when they saw all that. Dr. Cornell west is going to weigh in after this. So, go with me here. I want you to imagine something just for a moment, okay . Imagine this. Imagine you are at the capitol last week. Youre a supporter of the president. Youre in the a white supremacist or antigovernment or interested in being violent. You have been convinced and misled by the president s lies and the conspiracy driven media who have repeated them. But you look around yourself and you see people who do fit into those racist white supremacist groups, okay . Do you stay . You have an opportunity to leave and not associate yourself with that. If you stayed, i just want to show you some photos of the people you were with. We know them by now. This is kevin seefried, leading the charge in the capitol while carrying a Confederate Flag. This is robert keith packer. He is wearing a sweatshirt that says auschwitz with the famous phrase, work brings freedom. This is a gallowed erected outside the capitol with a noose hanging from it. If you were just there to support trump, why would you stick around these people and these symbols of hate, okay . Joining me now to discuss is professor cornell west. Professor, im trying to get people to understand this, me as well. Chris and i have been talking about this. Thank you for joining us. Its possible that many of the people that were at the president s rally in the riot that followed were not proud boys or White Supremacists or neonazis. So we know all of these people were there and front and center. If you see people that are part of those groups and you choose to stay and watch as the capitol is ransacked, what does that mean . It means that youve got to be able to negotiate and navigate the spiritual decay and moral decrepe attitude in your country. Trump is morally decrepit. It mean you have to your own integrity, your own honesty and moral fortitude and spiritual integrity. The thing to keep in mind, brother don, is even though rerightly thoroughly condemn and indict the spiritually decay folk, we dont want to fall into righteousness. We came from a great group of people that created the wounded healers and warriors in the face of it and the best of who we are is not to be pro occupied by evil. We shouldnt be surprised by evil just like were not paralyzed by despair. We dont want any righteousness because theres fascist versions of hate and lies but there could be neoliberal versions of corporate greed or whatever, hatred and lies. Weve got to stay in contact with humanity of folk even when theyre gangsters and thugs. Thats what we talk about when we talk next week about Martin Luther king jr. And John Coltrane and aretha franklin. 400 years of terror and hatred and trauma. We cant lose that in this moment even though where it looks as if it wasnt for black people, President Trump would still be in. 28 of our precious queer folk voted for trump. What was it about this gangster that could appeal to so many of our citizens . There you have to talk about policies unable to deliver basic goods like medicare and jobs with a living wage. People are deeply obsessed with the inability of the u. S. Government, especially in this dominant neoliberal form to deliver, and once you have a legitimation crisis, brother, and the centrist order cant hold, people look for other ways out. They look for obama in 2008 and then they went with trump. We are in a legitimation crisis and im glad to see brother biden looking like hes going to be more like fdr than clinton or obama. Because hes got to be bold, brother. Youre teaching a class here. Were going to have trumpism again. You got let me get in and ask a question. No. I know youre teaching a class here. No, no, no, no. But let me ask you then. But you have to and i agree with you. You cant selfrighteousness, but you have to point out the truth to people. But do you reach out to people . Like, if you see one of those people i dont know if you ever have occasion, what do you do and how do you reach out to the other side . It is your responsibility to try to win someone over who has that mind set . Well, it depends on what the context is, though, you know what i mean . The important thing is weve got to be truth telling and witness bearing with a spirit of compassion and a spirit of embrace. But embrace doesnt mean uncritical deference. It means im here to bear witness to something bigger than me, and i got a fire connected to a struggle for justice thats tied to poor and working people, especially on the chocolate side of town, but all around the city, all around the country, all around the world. Thats what im here to do, thats what im here to focus on. If that includes embracing folk you disagree with, of course, but you dont lose your focus when you do it. Thats the thing. Doctor, will you come back . Im come back any time you want. Not just truth to power, truth to powerless, too. Its a spiritual and moral challenge. The tradition that produced and i is a great moral and spur spiritual and moral achievement. Thats Martin Luther king. You dont get that through osmosis. You got work hard then you can embrace all of the rich humanity, all of the disaster, and all of the wondrousness of who we are as a species, my brother. Thank you, brother. Be well. Pray for me now. All the time. Dont you worry about that. Same here. I receive that, thank you. So, listen, one more person dying every six minutes from coronavirus in l. A. So, tonight, president elect joe biden proposing a nearly 2 trillion plan to pay for a massive nationwide Vaccination Program and to give direct Economic Relief to millions of americans who are struggling because of the covid pandemic. I know its been nearly a year thats tested us beyond measure. For all of you who have lost someone, my heart goes out to you. I know that feeling, looking at an empty chair across the table. All of you have fallen on hard times. I know you can never get back what you lost, but as your president , i know that every day matters and every person matters. So, come wednesday, we begin a new chapter. So, biden speaking as the covid19 crisis rages out of control. I want to bring in dr. Jonathan reiner. Doctor, good to see you. I havent seen you in awhile. Just a week or so. So, were going to get the president elects plan, but lets look at where we are right now. The covid deaths, they are rising. Sharply, in recent months. We set another grim record just this week, nearly 4,500 deaths in one day and the cdc says that we could see another 92,000 deaths in less than a month. Why is this still so out of control . Ah, because weve had two big spikes. We had a postthanksgiving spike and then we had a postchristmas spike. And despite those grim numbers, ill give you one ray of sunshine. Tonight, for the first time in months, we saw a drop in hospitalizations. 1,000 fewer people hospitalized today compared to yesterday. So, we wont start to see a drop in deaths until fewer people are in the hospital and fewer cases are happening. So, starting to see the cases tick down just a notch and literally for the first time in months, fewer people in the hospital today than yesterday, so lets see where that trend goes. Thats that will give us a sense that were getting close to the peak. So, doctor, tonight, president elect joe biden unveiled a sweeping plan to combat the coronavirus pandemic with a focus on testing and vaccine production and delivery, so, break it down for us. Whats different than what we have right now and do you think its going to work . Oh, boy, whats not different. First of all, what were seeing from the Biden Administration is an acknowledgement that what were doing right now really isnt working and a sense of urgency to get vaccines into arms. So, the Biden Administration is proposing 100 million vaccinations in the first 100 days and that is really doable. The last couple of days, we have vaccinated, given people their first shots, 950,000 people have gotten that in the last couple of days, each day. So, i think we can easily achieve that. But we need to be more ambitious. We need to vaccinate probably 2 Million People a day and we can do that, but we have to think different. We have to do we have to take vaccines out into the community. Stacey abrams said that she looked for voters where they are, not where she wanted them to be, and we need to do that with vaccines. We need to take vaccines mo where people are and were going to start seeing that around the country, big events, events at churches, at football stadiums, events at basketball arenas. We need to go into the community and vaccinate large amounts of people very, very quickly. And i see that against of urgency from the Biden Administration. So, biden promised to help elementary and middle schools open to inperson learning within the first three months of his administration, by helping schools stay clean and improve air circulation. We all want to see kids get back to school. Yeah. Do you think this is the way to do it, doctor . Ah, well, there are multiple components to doing this. First thing we need to do, we need to vaccinate all the teachers, because many of the teachers are in higher risk groups. We need to protect the teachers. This will enable them to come to school. Secondly, i think we need to Start Testing children with these cheap rapid antigen tests probably twice a week. Kids who are sick, stay home. Thats how we start to open this up. But everyone agrees we need to get kids back in school. The first step is to vaccinate every teacher in the United States and Start Testing all the kids like crazy. Dr. Reiner, thank you, sir. We begin tonight with the contrast between incoming and outgoing administrations at a point in time unlike any the country has ever seen before. Just moments ago president elect biden outlined his plan to fight covid and boost the economy at the end of a week that saw deaths top 4,000 a day and nearly a million more americans file for unemployment benefits. There is real pain, overwhelming the real economy. One where people rely on paychecks, not their
