This is about civil rights, equality. Human rights. It doesnt always come easy and fast as the president would like to say. We have always struggled. This is always been an experiment. What we have been trying to do here is always hard. The founder knew it would be hard. They were here running for their lives. Different issues. Same idea of letting minority be able to live out on its own terms. And were still fighting for it. But it is not easy. I dont think anybody can really imagine how hard it is. Yeah. The weird thing is that people say i look at interviews and things that happened. I was talking to your wife today. We have had a long conversation. Things from the 60s during the Civil Rights Movement the artists who were out front of the marlen brand o. And sammy davis jr. She said the same conversations these very smart very bright gentlemen were having the same conversations that we have now. Or could have been 2020. We have come a long way. Im not sure in some corners if we have changed enough hearts. And im not sure you can actually do that. If you can change hearts. I dont know. I know you can change legislation. I dont know if you can legislate someones heart. I think what you have to do is appeal to the collective. What we both seen in our lives is that even if people dont get it, when enough people are like them and want to be like, who seem to be getting it, they go along. Theres something adaptive about that. This country has been through that several times. It will be interesting to see who the next generation of great voices are. On this. He wont hear his own four star generals. Denouncing his threat to use act i military to put down protests. He wont hear his republican allies. Who want to take the names of confederate generals off military bases. He wont hear the nfl. Admitting they were wrong not to listen to protesting players. He wont hear nascar banning Confederate Flags. He wont hear his own advisers. White house aids, members of congress. Corporate ceos. Trying to convince him to stop dividing us. Stop stoking division. Like he did as a candidate. And still doing today. The president is convinced dividing america is a winning strategy. He is wrong. Hes out of step with the country on race and policing and how america moves forward. Look at this. 63 of americans disapprove of how this president is handling race relations. He just wont hear them. You can hear him, right . You can hear him comparing himself to president lincoln. Lincoln who freed thousands and thousands of enslaved black people . I think i have done more for the black people than any other president and lets take a pass on lincoln. Because he did good although its always questionable. In other words we are free, mr. President. He did well. You understand what ill mean. Ill take pass on honest abe. Questionable . Lincolns legacy is questionable . Thats pathetic. Really. Pathetic and unworthy of office. I dont know whether this president is questioning the legacy of lincoln or whether he cant admit anybody was a better president. Then theres what the president says about police using choke holds. Atactic that has become a symbol of brutality. Cities and communities across the country including philadelphia, phoenix, l. A. , sacramento. Look on the map. San diego, miami, broward county, chicago, washington d. C. , minneapolis, new york city, denver, houston, and austin. All banning choke holds. And the president said he thinks generally speaking choke holds should be banned but he says this. I think the concept of choke holds sounds so innocent and perfect. You realize if its a one on one. Two on one thats a different story. Depending on the toughness and strength. Were talking about toughness and strength. It really doesnt sound so innocent and perfect to someone who cant breathe. To someone who is having the life choked out of them. Thats why cities across the country are banning theetz. This president says about gassing peaceful protestors. So he could have a law and order tough guy photo op. In front of the the church. I think it was a beautiful picture. I think christians think it was beautiful. Why are you hearing from general milly and secretary of defense and not do you think its significant . No. I dont think so. Nope. He doesnt think its significant that the chairman of the joint chiefs apologized for appearing in fatigues with the president after the peaceful protestors were gassed. He doesnt think its significant his own secretary of defense didnt support his threat to use active duty troops to put the end to protests. And then theres what the president says about his campaign rally. June 19. June teenth. The very day we commemorate the end of slavery in the country. Hes having that rally in tul ta. Where 1921, hundreds of black americans were massacred by a white mob in a part of town known as black wall street. Campaign rally on june teenth in a city where hundreds of black americans were massacred. The president says this. Its going to be really a celebration. And an interesting date. It wasnt done for that reason. Its an interesting date. Its a celebration. Interesting date. Guess its not that meaningful to the president after all. Its a meaningful day to him. Its a day he want tos share the progress made we look forward to what needs to be done. Especially the police reform. Ill tell you what is interesting, its interesting that this president chooses that particular date for his own campaign rally. And interesting that he is accepting the republican nomination in jacksonville, florida. On august 27. Another bloody day in the country history. Whats going on here . What is going on here . Coincidences . Come on, people. Let me tell you about august 27. On that day in 1960, in jacksonville, a mob of several hundred white men attacked protestors who were holding sit ins at segregated lunch counters. Life magazine published this photograph. The Florida Historical society says some in the white mob were allegedly members of the kkk. Violence spread as the mob armed with baseball bats and axes attacked all the black people in sight. That day came to be known as ax handle saturday. And this president is accepting the president ial nomination in jacksonville. On the 60th anniversary of accideax handle saturday. Restarting Campaign Rallies on june teenth in tulsa. You have to wonder, is it all this willful blindness . At the least the president is completely out of step with america. Even the nfl which is announcing a june teenth league holiday. I remind you of what the president said about players peacefully protest lg racial injustice. I think based on what we have heard is that the president is always thought his instincts are better than advice he gets from advisers. Whats different about this time is were hearing from some of the advisers worried that the calculus changed. The nation is moving on and the president himself has been the out liar through this. They have noticed nascar is banning the Confederate Flag. Nfl is apologizing for how it treated players for protesting police brutality. The president himself is still focussed on the culture wars he does think played a role in getting him in office in 2016 and will help him in 2020. The concern among adviser is that were five months from the election. Worried he will hemorrhage the black support he gained over the last few months and worried hes ail ye alien ating suburban women voters they have been trying to capture. She put is exactly right. The president is the out liar. A really good way of saying it. Sticking with what worked for him no 2016. The entire country around him is changing. He sees everything through a political lens. What do you think the calculation is here . I think theres a couple things happening. This is a president who has saw his rise to power as someone that was driven through political base. And overwhelmingly white and conservative base. That is where they have held their administration. Where they have governed for in the interest and thats who he looks to for support and advice. Sometimes over the advice of the unity minded advisers. I think the some of this is not political. This is who he is. Who he has been throughout his life. And some point youre asking someone who has been set in the ways to make a completely different stance than who he has been previously. Lets not go before he ran for president and there was the central park five. The stoking the birtherism. A president and kind of public figure who capitalized on these issues of every turn. At this point to ask him to be Something Different because of the Election Year is a tall order for his advisers and the country. Even if it doesnt make political sense. Even in addition to rebooting his rallies on june teenth in tulsa. The president will give his con vens speech on august 27 in jacksonville. Six decades after racist violence there. Listen, it just seems incredibly i dont know. If not deliberately tone deaf. Thats the question. And argued he has done more for the black community. Saying maybe besides lincoln. They pushed back on that. He writes his own narrative. Confronted with what is actually happening head on. And is resisting to it. Aids are pushing on despite the criticism over that. It will be a celebration when hes there friday. And the question is the president rhetoric hasnt matched the moment were seeing play throughout the country so far. The idea it will change before next friday even to his own advisers doesnt seem to compute. Think about all this coincidence or whatever it is. He has to be aware of how africanamericans feel about this. Especially considering his history with racism. And not even history. His present with racism. What is going on here . Is it just flat out i dont care and understand if he wants to gain voters in the africanamerican community, this aint it. The white house is tried to make the attempts to reach out to black voters. They have seen it as a constituent si they can make inroads for in november. They like to believe these are good faith attempts. And doing so with a best interest of the community in mind. And that is some place they can take people away from joe biden. It is hard to think of these as good faith efforts when repeat td instances of the kind of the backlash. If the president wanted to make in roads that the first level the baseline is to do things that seem like a uniting figure. That show a pivot or change from his most instance of the past. That is not something he has shown a consistent willingness to do. Individual moments there are calling for an investigation into george floyd death. Or a set speech. He says the right thing or does the right thing quote on quote. In his personal moments when its off the cuff, we see the tweets. That always rolls back what we have seen previously. And it makes it hard to believe the president and the administration are taking that type of out reach seriously when they are not doing the kind of baseline levels of respect to black voters and black communities that almost anyone democrat or republican would say you need to do to be able to reach out to folks. We want to keep it that way. In the city of houston for example we have been reporting anywhere between 150 to 200 cases on a daily basis. And if i go back to the end of april, we had flattened the curve and we were in a good position. And didnt have nearly as many deaths as back then. Since things started to reopen, the number of positive cases have been ticking up. We want to try to contain that. And were messaging people u. Put on your mask and engage in social distancing and exercise proper hygiene. Lets talk about preparedness. The stadium in houston is prepped to preopen as a possible Field Hospital if needed. Are you concerned hospitals could be overwhelmed there . If people act as thoi the virus is yesterdays news and as we reopen, resocialize with one another. If people get away from the things that work so well for us and in march and april. We could face a more serious problem. Right now what were doing is that we are putting forth the alert. Saying people were moving and starting to move in the wrong direction. What worked for us successfully in march and april are the things they can work moving forward and reopening. If we dont do that and were wreckless and treat the virus as if its not here. We could face some danger. Dr. Fauci was on we are concerned but were sounding the alarm. Okay. I got you. As well you should. Dr. Fauci was on earlier and talking about the rising hospitalization to get states to rethink reopening. When you start seeing more hospitalization, that is a sure fire sign that youre in a situation where youre going in the wrong direction. More percentage of the tests that are positive and more hospitalization, thats something that should get you to pause and say wait a minute, lets rethink this and stee where were going. Maybe slow down a little. Maybe intensify our capabilities to identify isolating contact trace. We dont want it to get out of hand again. What do you think . Does texas need to reconsider reopening . Are they moving too fast . I have said in the first part of may that i thought we were moving faster than i would like. The reality is that we are reopening. Were reopening at a fast pace. Restaurants today can go to 75 of the occupant. In first week in july will be open. Thats the pace that were on. Having said that, i agree with dr. Fauci. Its important for us precautions that the medical professionals are telling us with need to do. If we reopen at the rate that were doing, and if we dont put on the mask and engage in social distancing and exercise proper hygiene, well face difficult problems. I look at the reports coming from the hospitals every morning. And the number of hospitalizations that number is increasing. If were still way within the ability to handle that, hospitals have ample capacity. In term of general admission and icu beds. I dont like the fact the numbers of people testing positively that this number is going up. Again, were just sounding the alarm. Telling people come on now, since we are reopening and the county the local officials we dont have any authority to close anything down. And just throwing a pity party. As to whether accepting change and understanding why we need this change and why its such a pivot toll moment for our country. So we can see the demographic and who shows up, what shows up. Everybody who shows up i want to see and hear what they have to say. Through social media you get both side. Theres more good than bad. But then another driver who is inspired by you and then released pictures of his car with black lives matter paint on it. And i know you have to be hardened by that. You made the decision to wrap your car with black lives matter. That logo. Partly because you didnt have a sponsor for the race. Do you think companies shied away from you because of this . Because of your stance . Because youre africanamerican . Whats going on . I have no idea. I have been struggling with sponsorship issues for a listening time. Ever since i joined nascar. I was told to go out and win and the sponsors will come. They never did. Im competitive and i go out there and feed off that. And thats where i just go out and love competing against competitors there. With as much positive out reach and as the image in a brand thats changing on a global level making a big impact in the nation. Sponsors are missing the boat. If we didnt thank who we have now on the race car. If you look closely we have the United States air farce on the car. We have worldwide technology. Cocacola. A will the of key partners that help us get to the racetrack and were excited about that. Chevy has been a big partner. They reached out after the race and was givering me high praise. Im excited about the direction were heading with this. I think it was a very important decision. And that im thankful for. Everybody for following through with the black lives matter car. Police confront derek scott in a parking lot after receiving this 911 call. He is pulling a gun on the guy in a parking lot. Reporter at first, scott puts his hands in the air and then beginning to run. Two officers give chase. This body camera footage released by authorities this week. Police catch up with scott, tackle him and struggle to detain him. One of the officers struggling with scott, and in the struggle, scott says, i cant breathe. An officer responds, i dont care. I dont care. Reporter several more times, he repeats, i cant breathe. An officer notices he is no stronger struggling or speaking. He is unconscious. One of the officers removes a gun from scotts pocket as he lies handcuffed on the grass. Officers continue to check on a sigh lint scott. They are all in a recovery position. Allowing for better opportunity to breathe and relax. While they maintain control of the suspect. Stay with us, man. Reporter at nine minutes, paramedics arrive. And scott appears to struggle again with police who e eventually get him on a gurney and into an ambulance. About an hour later, scott is dead. The medical examiner deserves there is no fatal trauma. Other significant conditions including physical restraint, recent meth use. In a statement that was released by the Oklahoma City Police Department, here is what they say. According to District Attorney there is nothing inappropriate by the officers, and there was no evidence of any misconduct by the officers. Therefore, he cleared all involved of wrong doing. Black lives matters held a protest demanding the video made public. So monday, the Oklahoma City Police Department did just that, don . Thank you very much for that. Very, very, very hard. I really cant explain it because its like im reliving his death all over again. Because i did not know the truth from the beginning. And i asked him when he passed away, will they please tell me what was going on . I didnt find out about his death until four days after he passed. And then i waited and i went to the police station, and they told me they didnt know e who he was. And a day after that, there was three detech dives detectives on my couch, and i asked why they didnt contact me as mother. And they said, were sorry. Not only to add misery to the situation. I had to wait altogether four days before i could see my sons body. Oh, my gosh. Its just awful. I want to talk about this video. Because in this video, your son can clearly be heard saying several times, i cant breathe. And officers reply, i dont care. You have been trying to get answers about your sons death for a year now. I know you cant watch the whole thing. But are you getting more information from what you have seen . No, im not. Because believe it or not, don, they sent me e home with a blank tape.
