That black people made whether it was in the military. Or building the society that they all lived in. It was like they were we werent fighting for that. We still didnt have the rights they had. It was a still we lost you. I want to ask you this, you went off on twitter. On the twitter thread about the racial issues that you have seen in the league. Calling out the league itself. Calling them racist. Tell us about some of the issues . Why do you say that . Well, its irresponsible for a head coach to say he doesnt see racism in the nfl. I can hear you. So i think its irresponsible for a head coach to say he doesnt see racism. The whole thing is structured the black player has been the media covers odell beckham. Hes a issue and brady does it hes firing up the team. Both dont get painted in the same way. They paint the false narrative. Around black players throughout the week. They kick them out and i have had white coaches that said im too smart. To not speak in the media. He didnt want to feel lesser than. I see these things happening all throughout the system. It happened to myself. And teams like green bay, they come to me when im protesting and we rather you not do that. Their community will be against me for protest. They tell me these things. This is not the city for it. They know the city is racist. They dont want to deal with the backlash of the blackness i bring to the table. Well, i appreciate you joining us. I wish we had a better connection. I think your message got across. And you are very brave. Many people dont want to hear what you are having to say. As we say you are spitting truth. Telling the truth. Special when you look at whats happening in the nfl. 32 teams only four teams have a minority head coach. And talk about the owners. People dont want to hear that, these are conversations we need to have and change needs to be made. You are on the forefront. Thank you for coming on and using your voice for change. Thank you so much. Thank you. Its been lempb day. Formally charged with aiding and abetting Second Degree murder. The officer who pinned floydss neck to the pavement was in court. In the day since floyd died protests erupted around the world. Protestors reporters and everyone else. Blocks away. Cnn and former chief of police are watching. Joining us this hour from philadelphia. Thank you for taking time. I want to start. The choke hold. Two types. A strangle hold stopping the blood flow to the brain. They pass out and continue to applying pressure to the windpipe. And how george floyd died. His friend in the car at the time. It doesnt sound like a choke hold was necessary. Those two cops they i get i dont know. They were intimidated maybe i dont know what they were thinking. George he did was peaceful form and retreated to his knees saying in so many words i have been hurt. Please, officer. In other words, why are yall detaining or using such force right now. Some departments like minneapolis allow choke hold. Others the strangle hold. Some dont allow either. Is the federal government intervene. Or an out right ban . As far as im concerned it shouldnt been in existence right now. Most departments got rid of the choke hold years ago if not deck dads ago. Minneapolis has it. Apparently. What you saw applied wasnt a choke hold. A knee to the neck i dont know of a Single Police department that trains that its okay to put a knee on ones neck like that on the windpipe. That is totally out of policy. And should never have taken place. The United States is unique it has 18,000 different Police Departments around the country. With that comes 800,000 sworn Law Enforcement officers. A huge number. Theres no National Standard for training and selection. Only those with the most impeccable characters are responsibility of protecting democracy. Is that whats happening . As far as National Standard im not opposed to it. I dont know how it would be implemented. National standards. For example it this were certain basic trainings required in order to be certified as a Police Officer. In order a accreditation that would be required. That would make sense. Every state has a Police Officer standard in training board. Established. And they determine which training is required in that state for their Police Officers. It varies from state to statement the laws vary. It needs to be discussed. Im not opposed to it. What would it look like and implemented. We have to do something. You mention 18,000 Police Departments. Thats far too many. Far too many. There needs to be mergers and regionalization of Police Departments. 18,000 Police Departments theres no way you get a standardization. Its far too large a number. 2014 protest in ferguson. After the shooting of michael brown. Focus on police fire power. Armed in some cases like armies. For years there was a transfer of service to military equipment to local Law Enforcement. New york times president president obama put limits on the program. And high profile cases of Police Officers killing black men inflamed tensions. Fast forward. Trump fully restored. A policy shift towards ensuring officers have tools they need to reduce crime and Keep Community safe. It seems like this debate was over in 2014. Why do police need the Armored Vehicles . And what would be described as weapons of war. To deal with communities. Its not to deal with communities be certain situations should you be confronted with a person who is barricaded for example. Heavily armed. Take for example the situation in las vegas. You had a sniper killing 58 people and wounded many many more than that. Police officers respond to a variety of calls that require a variety of different types of equipment in order to be effective. The issue for me is making sure you have policy in place that really covers when its appropriate to deploy the assets. For the average typical protest, you dont do that. You dont need it to be patrolling the streets. These are specialized situations. The only time you need. To totally have nothing at your disposal is a mistake. To have it in and misuse it is a mistake as well. It needs to be regulated through policy very tightly. And some restrictions on the kinds of military equipment that Police Departments can get nar hands on. It raise tensions. Whats happening in washington. It appears donald trump will get a big beautiful wall. Its being built around the white house. Surrounded by troops and no badges or identification. The speaker of the house wants to know why. This militarization and this proliferation of different groups coming into the capitol city. Of the country. Some without identification and justification. What is it the mission. Whos in charge. Whats the chain of command. We expect an answer. Is there a plausible explanation for the unidentifiable troops and are you concerned the security barrier around the white house will become permanent many some form . I think the president is over reacting. Its inappropriate to have that kind of presence in washington. I served as police chief there nine years. We have had 9 11. Iraq war protests. World bank protests. Some got really dicey on occasion. We never had to resort to that. I can recall a couple of occasions we had the National Guard on standby. They never really had to be deployed. At all. What i see going on now in washington is something that concerns me greatly. Not only have they brought in military, they are bringing in federal Law Enforcement. From around the country. They had correction officers from texas in washington. For what . There is absolutely nothing going on there that requires that number of personnel. Let alone military. Its a terrible message and not necessary. I have no idea what hes thinking. This is coming out of the white house. The Police Department in washington d. C. Is the city police. They are not involved in this. These are federal police and military. That hes calling up to protect the white house that i think is a huge overreaction. I agree with nancy pelosi. It makes no sense. Who is in charge . No one knows. A lot of questions and no answers. Good to see you. Thank you. In a very trump way the president seems to be labeling peaceful protests forced from outside the white house on monday. As terrorists. Sharing a letter from his former lair who argued without evidence the demonstrations were phony and the people were terrorists. Tear gas and flash bangs were used to clear the area. So he could walk to a church and hold a bible upside down for a photo op. Anger and disgust among former military leaders. Also speaking out. I watched this speech in the rose garden, unless you could hear the flash bangs in the background. Watched with horror as those Young Americans gatherng to exercise First Amendment rights protesting massive social ip justice in the country. Sought to make a positive change. Were being driven down the street by riot police. With tear gas and flash bangs. Driven down the street to clear a path for a photo op in front of the church. That is what happens in authoritarian regimes. That is what happens in ill liberal regimes. Not in the United States. We shouldnt tolerate it. Up next, justice for george. In many different languages. Around the world demanding racial equality everywhere. Hong kong this year thousands gather and well explain the message theyre sending to beijing. En ingredients that fuel 5 indicators of brain performance. Memory, focus, accuracy, learning, and concentration. Try neuriva for 30 days and see the difference. No justice, no peace understood and heard. Not just in the United States but around the world. Scenes from a mexico city protest. In solidarity. Australia capitol city. People march and chanted black lives matter. Europeans standing up. George floyd has been a trigger for activists around the world. To highlight racial inequality. Watching the events from paris. Demanding justice for a case they say is similar to george floyd. We have seen over the course of the last week the remarkable resilience of the movement popping up in sustained way in various locations. As countries look on at whats happening in United States with a nerve struck. Tuesday night in paris it was about 2,000 people gathered in his name. The young man killed after being taken into police custody. He had tried to flee a Police Identity check and killed after he was arrested. In dispute whether as the police the lawyers say it was under lying medical conditions that caused his death. Or family claims the violence which he was arrested. That question still in contention here. And the focus of the protests. Also in the protests that sign those signs black lives matter. Really many people inspired in United States. London yesterday as well another protest in the name of black lives matter. Also protest in barcelona. A vigil held there. And outside the American Embassy in warsaw. With the same banners. No justice no peace. Thank you. In paris. For the first time, commemorations in hong kong for the 1989 crack down have been banned. Officially because of the coronavirus. Still thousands gathered anyway on football fields chanting slogans. For greater democracy in hong kong. Live this hour. This is a tricky one. Theres the coronavirus. Hong kong has been the one place 30 years where they have marked the massacre in beijing. With vigil. Thousands turn out year after year. Yesterday what happened last night represented a significant turning point for hong kong. We saw thousands of protestors defy a police ban to turn out and mark the commemoration. 31 years since the crack down. They went to the park here. They pulled down the barriers. They held lit candles and sang songs. Prodemocracy songs sang in 1989. A moving display of public mourning. And added meaning. Last night we saw a number of high profile figures and icons including listen to what he said. There is no room for optimism. I would say that we were always maintain a positive attitude. And continue to fight. That is important. Never give up. Were bound to be a loser. If we fight, theres always a chance. That we will be able to achieve what we have been aiming at. Former chairman of the Democratic Party speaking last night. Something else we noticed that we have not seen previously were the growing calls for independence. Quite a number of protestors bearing slogans and signs saying liberate hong kong. Independence. The only way out. Previously this local list of movement was a fringe movement. The calls for independence having growing louder. The movement is gaining momentum. Belief in a independence is increasingly dangerous because its changing. Right now beijing is hashing out ot details of the new National Security law. Government in beijing and hong kong believe its necessary to fill a security loophole. As well as to prevent the scenes of arrest we saw last year during the protest. Chinese Officials Say those scenes of protest that called for independence is a direct threat to china sovereignty. Its interesting how xi jinping fuelled this demand for independence in a way. Also in a smaller way. The National Anthem bill. Which has been passed by the legislature there. Essentially criminalizes anyone disrespecting the china National Anthem. Another significant event. Lawmakers here voted to pass the controversial National Anthem law. Which would criminalize the mocking or insulting of china National Anthem. Pun ib shl with jail time up to three years. We have seen scuffles. Clashes. People screaming at each other and the use of stink bombs to get in the way of the legislation. It passed. People here in hong kong at Football Games have openly booed the National Anthem. With the law such action would be a crime. Someone needs to lighten up in beijing. Thank you. George floyds life was honored on thursday. In a memorial service. Protestors there is Something Better on the other side of this. In washington, crowds gather near the white house. And the u. S. Capitol. Earlier in the day. Barricades and security fencing around the white house. George floyd will be remembered not for how he lived but how he died. In minneapolis on thursday, they gathered to honor him and his life. The first of many memorials in the coming days. Joined with community leaders. Celebrities and public figures. Among the mourners. Clutching his casket while he kneeled before it. They stood in silence for eight minutes and 46 seconds. The amount of time the officer knelt on his neck ending his life. Reverend said it was rallying cry. What happened to floyd happens every day in this country. And education in Health Services and every area of American Life is time for us to stand up and in georges name and say get your knee off our neck. A professor of history. Study of race and democracy. The university of texas. Joining us from austin. Professor, thank you for taking the time. Thank you for having me. Theres talk after George Floyds death somehow we have reached a Tipping Point in the country. It will be different this time. And it is different. I wonder if its because of simple facts like the pandemic. People being stuck at home and watch the news and had to see the video. Nine minutes pinned to the sidewalk. Before there was floyd there was taylor. Shot in lieu ville. And georgia. Ahmaud arbery. Shot while jogging while black. There has been a string of events. People being forced to watch it and being made aware. Theres a few Different Things happening. Its a crisis thats connected to long standing history of racism and White Supremacy in the United States. Certainly the covid19 the combination of the covid19 pandemic and the Racial Disparity that hit the Africanamerican Community being diagnosed at high rates dying at higher rates. Being more vulnerable. And Nursing Homes and employees. Being more likely to be furloughed and unemployed. Mass unemployment. 40 million americans out of work. And combined with the george floyd really public execution may 26. And then the really out pouring of grief and anger. Also resolve we have seen nationally. And not just among africanamericans. But among large numbers. Whites and las tin and asian people. This is the largest really peaceful mass demonstration for racial justice. Multiracial in character that we have seen. Thats why many people feel it will be different this year. President obama talked about that. When he was talking the other day. About his foundation my brothers keeper. Because of the protests he said it was a real reason for optimism. I know enough about the history to say theres Something Different here. You look at those protests. That was far more representative Cross Section of america. Out on the streets. Peacefully protesting. And who felt moved to do something. Because of the injustices they had seen. Hes making a comparison to 1968 the race riots in the 60s. It was mostly black people protesting. Is this now i guess with something which can be sustained over a period of time and whats the goal . I think that we have a generational opportunity to transform american democracy. To send institutional racism. The end goal is really antiracism and antiracist policy. That pursue racial justice. The criminal Justice System is a gate way to racial and economic oppression and exclusion. We have seen it happen in l. A. The mayor announced 150 million scheduled for the Police Budget will go into communities of color. And disadvantaged communities. City of austin is looking to do the same. Other different cities and city council at the local level. And states will be doing it. Are looking to redirect money to right size the Police Department and use the extra money to invest in everything from early child care and deincarceration. And invest and provide incentives not about tax breaks but racial integration. And gentryification. Theres a lot of policies need to be changed and a will the of new policy that need to be implemented. Thank you so much. Good to speak with you. Good luck with everything. Thank you. Theres also the case of Ahmaud Arbery shot dead jogging in a georgia neighborhood. Charged with his murder. The lead investigator testified after they fatally shot him. He called him the n word. Chances are those are the words he last heard. It was very heartbreaking. I often imagine the last minutes of my sons life. I didnt imagine it would be that harsh. But to learn that statement was made in the last seconds of his life. I get it was heartbreaking. Now the family attorney called the killing an intentional act. Motivated by hate. Both studies rely on data from a company which were unable to verify. Cdc grilled op capitol hill over the response to the pandemic. There was a big focus on faulty test kits which cost the country valuable time in fighting the virus. This is not the first time the cdc chief has come under fire. After months of near silence during the global coronavirus pandemic, the head of americas top Health Agency fulltimely speaking out. We have done 17 million tests. Cdc director testified before congress today. Defending his agency which was criticized for faulty covid19 tests in the early days of the out break. The virus spread unchecked across the country. The cdc developed within ten days a test. That test is not a flawed test. Its perfect. The coronavirus pandemic isnt the first time he has been in a controversy during a National Health crisis. In 1992 the height of the aids epidemic in america. The then army doctor and top aids researcher was involved in another scandal. He presented findings from a study he was doipg on a vaccine treatment for hiv at a aids conference. Dozens of interviews and documents obtained and reviewed reveal fellow researchers accuse him of scientific misconduct. Claiming he over sold the data and cherry picked results. Officials attempted to rerun the numbers but failed to replicate the same results. A military memo calling for investigation shows he continued to publicly tout the data. Despite assurances and private meetings he understood the past presentations to be error. And refrain from repeating that error. After a investigation the army didnt charge him. The then lieutenant was found in violation of army code. For his relationship with a conservative aids organization run by evangelical shepard smith. The organization received information from red field in his lab to a degree that is ip appropriate. The group appeared to be an out let for marketing research. The allegations hung over him until his retirement from the army in 1996. Years before ending up on the short list to become president trumps cdc director. Several former collaborators told cnn they didnt think he was a good fit for the job. Now the covid19 pandemic, some cdc officials describe a deep frustration with red field. Blaming him for the side ling of the agency and not doing more to advocate on its behalf. One doctor who retired in 2019 said that under him the agency had been handicapped and he is not as visible as predecessors. From the outside we dont see him we dont hear him. He often doesnt come to the White House Press conference. When he does its usually as wall paper. Silent. Thanks for that report. Basketball could be back. Not as we know it. Their families here in the u. S. And they are really concerned. This was an extremely hard day for them. Their loved ones are still being wrongfully detained. Up next a state of emergency inside the arctic circle. An oil spill and a russian president on a rant directed at local officials. That fuel 5 indicators of brain performance. Memory, focus, accuracy, learning, and concentration. Try neuriva for 30 days and see the difference. State of emergency has been declared in russia far north. After a major oil spill. 20,000 tons of fuel leaked into a river after technical problems. The russian president blasted local officials who took two days to find out it happened. And then only learned details from social media. A clean up is under way. But the river will take decades to recover. For more on this. With us this hour from london. What are the factors here it make this a decades long clean up effort . I think just the fact its so much diesel fuel thats been spilled. 20,000 tons. Seeped into the earth around the fuel container that ruptured. And a vast majority of that has gone into a local river system that feeds the lake. It provides contamination for the entire area. An area inside the arctic. Its very difficult to access for instance there are no roads to get there. It made the clean up operation more difficult. In term of what this was caused by the company theres an investigation going. The company is suggesting it could have been environmental factors. That led to the rupture of the massive fuel tank. In the sense the frost in the part of the world has been melting because of the climate change. And that led to a catastrophic failure of the structure around the tank. Now the investigation under way to determine exactly who is responsible. I understand one person at the stage has been detained and could face charges. More could face arrest as well. Its that other issue that is most interesting. The fact it took a couple days before the local authorities found out this had taken place. They found out about it because of social media. Vladimir putin furious about that. It gives insight into the kind of country russia is. The fact that people are reluctant to tell superiors about bad news worried about consequences and the preference is cover it up. In this case the swas is so dire, the situation is so dire. Covering it up is not an option. It doesnt just happen in russia. It sounds familiar. What are we looking at in getting this under control . They are. They have people on the ground. They set up booms inside the lake. In the region. Which is inside the arctic near a city. Which is in itself one of the most polluted places in the world. Theyre trying to extra resources in there. There are no roads to the pollution site. All terrain vehicles sp helicopters. It makes people and equipment to the sight to carry out the clean up difficult than it would be in other locations. The logistics sound like a nightmare. Combined with the weather. And Vladimir Putin breathing town your neck. Not a good combination. Thank you. Thank you for watching. Please stay with us.
