Latest on the coronavirus pandemic. Over 1. 6 million cases worldwide. And more than 95,000 deaths around the globe. Here in the u. S. , there are now more than 465,000 confirmed cases and more than 16,000 deaths. Tonight, the director of the cdc robert red field tells us that the u. S. Is nearing the peak of this virus. In new york, the death toll reached a new hi of 800 deaths. A sign of hope in the hardest hit state. The numb of hospitalizations in new york state dropped from 600 to 200 in one day. The director and Vice President pence credited americans vigilance saying social distancing is working. As of to want 97 of the country is under stay at home orders. We bring in cnn White House Correspondent and resident fact checker. President trump keeps talking about opening up the economy. Theres clearly tension between his economic adviser and the medical community. Who do you think hell listen to . If you take the most recent case we have, which is what happened around the easter date that the president was talking about before. You would say that he will ultimately listen to his Health Policy adviser. In this case chaeted he wanted to get the country open and go back to church on easter. Dr. Fauci went to him and said that wont be possible. We have to sustain those social distancing guidelines. And extended them through the end of april. He may walk up to the line again. At the end of april. Flirt with the idea of reopening the economy. At once or stages. And yield to the data at the end. Vice president pence was asked about that today. The president himself is not committed to may 1. Were following the data. Thats the way it reopen the economy put the coronavirus behind us and right now the data suggests they should not reopen the economy on may 1. The president was asked about the country getting back to normal earlier tonight. Take a listen. How could the administration discuss the possibility of reopening the country when the administration doesnt have an adequate nationwide tesing system for this virus in dont you need a testing system for the virus before you reopen we have the best testing system in the world. There are certain sections in the country that are in phenomenal shape already. Other sections are come lg online. Other sections are going down. We in addition are giving out millions of tests and every day were doing it exponentially and picking up. And going to certain areas of the country and do massive testing. Its not necessary but its a good thing to have. Its not necessary . What are the facts . This is matter of opinion. President s opinion is at odds with the opinions of experts around the worltd. That includes dr. Fauci. And a whole bunch of others who say the only way to responsibly safely reopen the economy is massive system of what they call testing and tracing. You need to be able to test at least everyone with symptoms. Ideally many more people than that. And see if they are positive quick will isolate them. And then trace their contact. Go to the people they had contact with. Quickly test those people. Isolate them if necessary. And avoid another wave of infection in the area and around the country. If you dont have that testing in place what you do is risk multiple waves where you keep opening and closing and cant get going economically. The attorney general bill barr is saying that he opposes changing election practices this year. Citing the trump opposition to increasing mail in voting opportunities. While were in a pandemic. Its not the right time to be experimenting with the way elections are conducted. Through mail in and other techniques. By november well be dealing with different circumstances. We can adapt the election practices at the polls to accommodate Public Health concerns. This administration doesnt want vote by mail to happen. Its not an experiment. Many people have been doing it. The president has done it. The country has been adapting towards early voting. Mail in. Absentee voegt for decade. Its sounds like a partisan statement who seems to think changing lt way we do elections is somehow a threat to republicans. This is something that President Trump is uttered as well. Saying you can have levels of voting that no republican could survive. More than 30 states have either all mail in voting. Or no excuse absentee. Really, what i think were talking about in this election is ramping up the process that already exists to make absentee ballots readily available. There are another 18 or 19 states that dont permit no excuse absentee the question would be do you move from no excuse excuse required. Explains why youre away from your polling place on election day. To make it more broadly available. Cant you just write in there is a pandemic . I would rather vote by mail. Isnt that an excuse. Well, you would think. Yes. That could be the answer. It could be simple. Im afraid to go to my polling place. Thats what were talking about. Something which procedures already exist already in very widespread use. That seems like a legitimate excuse to me. Worldwide pandemic that could be harmful to my health. Here is my ballot. And sign it. Thank you both. Appreciate it. Dr. Fauci responding to studies that indicate new york coronavirus cases came from europe saying hes not surprised given travel from italy. Joining me now coauthor of the study. Thank you, doctor. Your research is fascinating. 87 of the viruss that you have studied in new york city are similar to european cases and came not just from one place but many countries . Yes. Essentially what we did is we had a Pathogen Surveillance Program in place. For quite sometime. Normally we apply the program to studying seasonal flu to studying pathogens. And we leverage the resources and look at coronavirus cases. In the initial study that we have done we sequence and look at the genes of the coronavirus for 84 patients and comparing that to a large in Different Countries looking at the cases that they saw there, that basically tells us by looking at those cases and comparing them to ours is the gee gnomes of the viruss here in new york are similar to the cases from present in europe. The cases in New York Group with cases from multiple countries in europe. And indicates that there are multiple origins of the virus coming from europe and shows that the path of the virus as it left asia, spreading around the world, didnt go directly to new york. But it took a detour through europe. And from europe the cases that we saw there through travel this could be people returning from travel to europe. Into new york. Also people visiting new york. And brought the virus into the city. Your team thinks the virus has been circulating in new york city since january. How are we able to determine that . What we can do is look at the diversity of the virus we see here in new york. As the virus spreads as its passed between people and sort of replicating itself. Its accumulates small errors they function as a molecule. The diversity that arises in the virus population can tell us something about the length of time the virus has been circulating in a population. What we saw here for the cases that we identified and examed in new york, we can see in the weeks prior to that there has been on track spread of the virus. Meaning that we do not have sort of the the virus that are present at the moment. Because of the diversity of the virus now, we can say that the virus has been circulating for several weeks prior to the study. Speaking of circulating. I found it interesting your team found a new york coronavirus that was identical to one of the virus found in Washington State by a different team. Does that suggest that the coronavirus was traversing across the United States or just they had the same original origin point in china . It is so both are essentially possible. With we think its probably an indication it may have been local spread. Within the United States. So what we need to do to confirm that is sequence adish cases in new york. And need to fill in some of the blanks in the math were having. Other cities, other states. And start sequencing more cases across the country. So we can identify some of the missi missing links that maybe in the transmission. Thank you so much. I appreciate it. According to new data from the department of labor. When you combine that with the data from the priest two weeks, thats 16. 8 Million People filing. Think about that. Now almost 17 million americans who are now out of work in just a few weeks. Joining many now former secretary of labor and author of the system, who rigged it. How we tfix it. Good evening, sir. What a mess. 6 million americans filing for unemployment. 11 of the labor force out of work. You were labor secretary. How would you describe the emergency . This is unprecedented. Certainly unprecedent ld in anyones lifetime. Today. And i worry that theres no let up here. Were hemorrhaging jobs. Small businesses are closing at a rapid rate. We could easily see 30 of the entire American Work force out of work at this rate. Wow. 30 . Okay, how are these weekly jobless reports even capturing the whole picture of what is happening then . Because they will have to be revisions if youre saying well see 30 of people out of work. They dont capture everyone. Many people are not eligible for unemployment insurance. People cant get through. Because the phone lines are jammed. Long lines. And the web sites are crashing. Beyond that, we are seeing more and more businesses closing. And especially Small Businesses. Small businesses really are the employers of the most of the hourly workers. And im talking about restaurants, retail establishments, hotels, huge numbers of relatively low wage workers are losing their jobs and astounding rate. So, robert, if this is unp s unprecedented and 30 of the work force . Right . How do we quantify this . How do yo put it into perspective . Is there a way to do it . What does this mean for us . For the economy . The worst area the grease depression of the 1930s. 25 of the work force was unemployed. Its important to understand this is not your typical recession or depression. This is a pandemic. This is brought on by a Public Health crisis. Most important thing we can do is have people stay home. The way to stay home for most people is either losing their job or getting furloughed. And the problem is that its a selffulfilling prophesy. Obviously the more people scared, justifiably about the pandemic. The less shopping theyll do and less willing to get out there. Their own incomes are jeopardized. You can see how the interlocking relationship of the Public Health crisis with an economic crisis makes everything worse and worse. We wont be able to do anything about the job problem right now. We have a Public Health problem that takes precedence. Its vitally porimportant to ge money to people to pay bills and buy food. And keep a roof over their heads. Economic funding the rescue package that congress is work on, what do they need to do . What should be in it . Both the Democrats Ask republicans seem to agree there needs to be Small Business funding. One of the problems for Small Businesses is the funding has taken the funding thats there and available is still not actually out the door. It requires the banks get involved and were having trouble with the signal. It seems like someone is calling for you. On that note, well take a break. And well let you go. See you next time. Thank you so much. Thank you. Officials sag today reopening the country wont be a one size fits all solution. Well dig into the different scenarios. Its the small parts that make a big difference. A letter sent saying that the current tests for Coronavirus Infection sometimes miss positive cases. Lets get right to it. With Richard Quest cnn Business Editor at large. And the codirector of the surgical intensive unit at the universe of the chicago. Good evening. I want to start with you, doctor. I want to run this by you. In the letter that the academy cited one study of 51 coronavirus patients found the test missed 16 of the cases. Do we have our doctor . Are you there . Dont have it. Okay. Well ask about that when we get the doctor back. So richard, lets talk about that. Listen, its not a surprise to see that there are sometimes false positives and sometimes false negatives. This seems to be a particularly high rate with 16 out of 51. Well talk about that. Lets talk about the people who are out of work and the unemployment and numbers and so forth. Almost 17 million americans filed for unemployment over the past three weeks. The economic damage done by the virus has been unlike anything that we have seen. How long do you think it will take for the economy to get going again . After things reopen. Do we know the answer . No, we dont. Is the short answer. Because we are in unprecedented times. We do know that its not just like flicking a switch on and off. It was relatively easy. Painful and deeply disturbing when the governors announced they were cloesing restaurants and bars. That was the painful but easy bit relative to starting this whole thing up again. People have to be taken back onto work forces again. You have to reestablish supply chain. You have to physically make sure your premises can open again. It wont be very long. But slowly. And at the back of everybodys mind is this you cant do it too quickly in case the virus resurges. In case theres a second wave. Anybody who thinks that on august 12 or june 14 or whatever date it might be, well all be back to the races. That is not the way it will be. It will be slow and painful. And for businesses it will be bit by bit. And make the economy situation worse to are open and have the virus flare up again. Correct . Lets be clear about this, for us to in some shape or form not continue this stringent social distancing that the governor of new york talks about, would be calamitous. If we open too soon and the virus gets a foothold. The economic pain will last into autumn and possibly beyond. No doubt about this. The short Term Economic calamity gets us over having a long Term Economic catastrophe. Doctor is with us now. I understand. Great. You heard what 16 out of 51 gave a false negative. When they were actually positive. What do you make of this testing situation . You have the false negative test, that its concerning because the patients may think theyre negative when they with positive. By being positive they are infectious and can infect other patients. Which is important. The light switch on and off. We start reopening the country, knowing that the tests may be suspect well need to have it a more robust testing program. Therefore as you get back to the new normal. Not the old normal. We need to track who was infected and who the close contacts are. So theres not another out break. The term hes using for the financial calamity are actually translatable to what can happen as far as Public Health. How can you trust to open the country back up when you cant trust the test theyre use as model to open the country and economy back up . Thats what the Public Health experts are saying. We need to be careful and mindful of how we open up the country. Its not like flipping a switch. We do it gradually and keep a close eye. And monitor for testing. With the population. And since the tests are suspect, that will require a more robust monitoring system. Thank you. I appreciate it. My next guest says death has never felt so close and so far away in the same breath. Remember that you should wear the mask in public, only if you feel like you cant social distance. You dont need to wear it taking a walk by yourself. Some of them harrowing. Chair of the pediatric in school of medicine. He spent weeks battling coronavirus. Doctor, thank you. Im glad that you recovered and doing well. Thank you so much for joining us. You describe what you wont through in the New York Times writing this. For 12 days, i lived with burning lungs. Melees. No appetite and little gusto for life. One night my oxygen saturation dipped. Ment next morning i called colleagues for help. You were in the hospital for several days. Talk about the recovery. It was this is has been obviously the strangest disease i have ever had. And it actually started off where i called friends after two days and said i feel like i have the flu. Im good. Maybe we can play golf thursday or friday. About four days went by thats what you describe. The Burning Sensation just kept building up, building up. And that feeling of you have heard that before, you just dont want to do anything. You dont want to get off the couch. I great friend and relatives that live near me. They were bringing food. Leaving it on the step. It got to the point where i didnt even want to warm it up. So then i had problems after that. And i had been myself. Im a physician. I had a pulse here, which was my wifes who passed a few months ago. I have been monitoring myself. Temperature and oxygen saturation. Go out and buy this. It makes you feel great. You go to sleep as sick as you are you know youre stable. And oxygen levels are fine. And then what happens. Its a friday night, i put it op and rather than reading high 90s on the im in the midlow 90s. 92, 93. So i fell asleep. Slept through the night. Woke up, first thing i did was put the oxygen on. Its reading 88. 87. I knew i was in trouble. I know a lot. I actually have done intensive care on the pediatric side for my entire career. When did you go to the hospital . You knew you were in trouble. That moment. And i called my place. My colleagues. And i said you have to get an ambulance for me im going down. Thats when the fear started. Because i had been talking with people about everything that had been going on, im pretty well versed in the disease. The thought of proceeding to a ventilator and obviously was scaring the wits out of me. And im in the ambulance thinking, well, this could be the last time i see my house potentially. These were things going through my head and given everything that happened to me and my family over the last six, seven months. I didnt have a will the of faith that it wasnt going that route. I got to the Emergency Department and my saturation. I was on oxygen. Saturation had come up. The physicians came in, basically to start to talk about the potential for clinical trial. And i knew the drugs. I originally had titled the article in the times when you know too much. And thats my life. I have been letting you go on because you have such a fascinating story. You lost your wife of 37 years to cancer. Its taken a toll on you and your two sons. You know a lot about it. You have you talk about the dignity trying to maintain. The healthcare workers what they did. About the testing. You wrote so much about in the New York Times article. I want to give you the last word on what you want to talk about most. If you can. In the short time that we have left. Healthcare workers or people getting through this or whatever you want to say. What i want to say i was so grateful you had me on, i just want to let people out there know, here i am im speaking, im off oxygen. I have been off for a day. Im feeling better every day. Im already working by Conference Calls from home. I can be a little breathless as times. But im going back to myself. I feel it. I want to give hope to everyone out there in the hospital, people going into hospitals. And look we know theres a lot of death around us and hardship. I want to give hope to everybody who is teetering to say keep fighting. Keep fighting it. Stay awake, say to yourself im going to make it. I have to get through this. And some of us do. Its not a death warrant necessarily. Thank you so much. We appreciate it. And you continue to get better. Thank you for sharing your story. Well be right back. Com tonight were remembering charlotte. Sanjay gupta has more on her life. For the last 20 years i have straddled the world of medicine and journalism. And in both professions im always reminded stay objective, do your best work, and dont get too close. But with Little Charlotte figgi, that was impossible. She just had this way about her, that smile, that giggle that just got you and captured your heart. Remember me . That was june 2019, the last time i saw charlotte. And she was doing great. I cant imagine back then, imagine she would be 12 years old and seeing her at 12 years old and what that would look like. She was dying. When i first met charlotte, it was 2013 for our first film on medical marijuana, called weed. Pitter patter. Creep crawls in the cave. We had heard about this amazing 6yearold from colorado who had a rare form of epilepsy. She had a seizure every 30 minutes, every one potentially fatal. No treatment had worked. And then one day, desperate, her parents gave her a nonpsychoactive ingreet yent from the cannabis plant called cannabidiol or cbd. She didnt have a seizure that day or that night. Yeah, i thought this is crazy. It was at that moment people started to see that marijuana, which had been considered dangerous, could also be a therapy. She changed my mind and opened my eyes to the possibility this was a legitimate medicine. And in the process, she changed the world. Probably the most important thing ill ever do was to help my own child and then share that information to help others. Charlotte figi was the entire cbd movement wrapped up into a big smile. Her story changed policy about cannabis. States were inspired by the story of charlotte figi and made cbd more accessible around the United States to treat epilepsy. And in turn, scientists around the world wanted to study charlottes special cbd oil, research that before charlotte, no one seemed interested in doing. I was begging researchers and physicians to work with us and help us understand the phenomenon we were seeing and they wouldnt even talk to us. We were laughed out of rooms. Now they beg to research our product. Shes happy being outside. Charlotte lived her short life to the fullest. And while she was almost this mythical miracle, she was also just a little girl who loved to go tandem biking with her mom. And while the last month was not easy, she had symptoms of covid19 while never testing positive, she eventually developed pneumonia which once again unleashed her seizures. Her mother, paige, says charlotte was still smiling and happy until the very end when a seizure became more than her fragile little body could handle. Charlottes life ended just as it began, in her mothers arms, surrounded by family who loved her, cherished her, and protected her, all forever changed by this little girl who forever changed the world. And every, like me, who were caught in her glorious orbit. Please rest in peace, charlotte. You know, don, i was speaking to this reverend today, reverend jen bailey, and she was reminding me that grief is always part of the journey and that if you dont shy away from grief it allows you to actually feel more deeply for people, feel more deeply for chorarlott. Thats what putting together this piece did for me. It allowed me to fully experience that grief. And ill always be thankful. Im going to miss charlotte. Ill always be thankful to charlotte and her mom for letting me be a part of their life. Don. Thank you, sanjay. And thank you for watching. Our coverage continues. N1 solu.
