This is his truth. I was in chicago when he was governor. And when obama was coming coprominence. He did something bad but there are plenty of people on the democratic side that believe what happened to him was he should have gone to jail. His sentence was harsh. The senior senator from illinois thinks the same thing. Im not here i cant say im an anchor. I cant say whether its true or not. Plenty of people on the democratic side i dont know if they thought his sentence should be commuted. But thought it was harsh. Thats just as an aside. Two things. He fought. When you fight the penalties go up. They tried him twice. People may in the like the rule. Dershowitz was argue rg that with stone. If you fight they throw the book at you. Lets say his sentence was too harsh. Heres the problem that remains with the move. Do you know how many people are suffering under too harsh punishments right now . This is who he picks out. You will find no argument there. This is the president s way of getting improper sentencing on the agenda of white Political Class swamp guys from d. C. And elsewhere. Thats how you bring awareness to whats going on with drug sentences over the country and garden variety felonies and misdemeanors . Give me a break. Thats bs. A lot of harsh sentences. Why start w good point. I have to run. Thank you. This is cnn tonighifheres anyt clear on how this administration operates, its simple. People the president didnt change. Donald trump didnt change. You changed. Thats what i say. Its simple. If you cross him this president , your days are numbered. If you are on team trump or if you could be useful to him, the skys the limit. Theres u. S. Ambassador to germany. President confirming hes naming him acting director of National Intelligence. He has zero relevant experience. You think it might be a problem. Some republicans are so out raged the job hes done as ambassador by his really undiplomatic demeanor. Theres no way that he could be confirmed to permanent position. Thats up for them to decide. President is given that position now. Lets see. Thats the reason hes acting. Acting to see how this goes. You have to wonder just how hard the gop would actually push back against a president that they just acquitted in the impeachment trial. Rick is a trump loyalist. Thats no surprise. Who the president has said was his favorite ambassador. Trump likes his tv appearances and his tweets. White house Officials Say in the wake of the impeachment stroirk hes looking for a political who will have his back. Thats a quote. This is the director of National Intelligence. Who is supposed to help prevent a catastrophic attack on the country. We all know how the president feels about his Intelligence Community. Out going acting dni is still in the dog house for saying the whistleblower acted in good faith and followed the law. The president has loyalist at the top of the Intelligence Community. State department and doj. Thats a big deal. He is telling bill barr what to do in spite of barr not very convincing threats to quit. Well have more on all of that in a moment. Reports tonight wikileaks founder was offered a pardon if he said russia was not involved in the dnc email leak. According to ta lawyer for asang who told a court in london a former congressman, putins favorite. Visited asang in 2017. In london. On the instructions of the president to offer a pardon if he would play ball. And the denials are rolling in. Putting out a statement saying at no time did i talk to President Trump about julian asang. Like wise i was not directed by trump or anyone else to meet with asang. Saying in a statement the president barely knows dana other than an excongressman. Hes never spoken to him on this subject. Or almost any subject. It is a complete fabrication and total lie. Probably a never ending hoax and total lie from the dnc. Yes, the old blame the democrats strategy. Except the president met with him in the oval office in 2017 and endorsed him for reelection in 2018. That is the president seems to be on a campaign not just to fill his administration with loyalists but to reward high profile friends of friends and people who cases he has seen on tv. The president tweeting today rob didnt sell obamas seat. Okay. The audio says otherwise. He wanted to. I have got this thing. Its golden. And im not just giving it up for nothing. Okay. President going onto try to hang his prosecution on his arch enemy and perceived arch enemy james comey. Even though heres the fact the fact is comey was in private practice at the time. At that time. Proving today he knows how to stay on the president s good side with this. Im a trump o crat. If i had the ability to vote i would vote for him. The fact is he was a poster boy for corruption. A corrupt former new York Police Department commissioner. The face of insider trading. And all of them got clemency from the president. Like i said before, so much for his claims that he was a great corruption fighter. Ukraine had a tremendous corruption problem. He wants to end corruption in ukraine. Very very strongly looking into all sorts of corruption. Ukraine is known as a corrupt country. One of the most in the world. Shockingly. Were investigating corruption and i heard greg and numerous people the other day say i have an obligation to do that. We have to check corruption. Well Work Together to root out corruption in ukraine. I probably have a legal obligation to report corruption. Then theres the other side of the coin. The latest victim of this president s post impeachment victory purge of anybody who crossed him on ukraine. Now its the pentagon top policy official who warned against with holding military aid. The shake down that got him impeached if the first place resigning today. He said at the pentagons request. The president tweeting his thanks to john rude for his service to the country. Also sharing a story from Bloomberg News reporting that rude quote faced pressure to resign from some who lost confidence in his ability to carry out the trump agenda. Nothing says thank you for your service like pressuring someone to resign. In the wake of this, theres a sentencing tomorrow of long time dirty trickster roger stone. Found guilty of lying to congress and threatening a potential witness. Remember four prosecutors quit that case last week. In protest over barrs intervention. Reducing the sentencing recommendation for the president s friend. Now its all up to u. S. District judge jackson. The president lashing out at her on twitter. There you go. There are the tweets. Unlike his loyalists hes powerless to control her. Now the question is, what will the judge do tomorrow . Seems like all the president is looking for in a director of National Intelligence at this time is someone who will have his back. Putting an unqualified loyalist in the position put all of us at risk . Former director of National IntelligenceJames Clapper weigh in. Next. Acting director of National Intelligence. Announcing he is putting the u. S. Ambassador to germany in the position. He has no intelligence experience. Telling cnn quote hes out of his league. Lets bring in cnn anchor and chief national correspondent. Jim sciutto. You are sounding the warnings on this. Hes going to over see 17 intelligence agencies. Were a couple miles north of the site of the former world trade centers. This position was formed after 9 11. To prevent and coordinate prevent another 9 11. Coordinate among the agencies to share information so it doesnt happen again. Ill read from the act of 2004. Any individual nominated for appointment as dni shall have Extensive National security expertise. Thats the qualification. Lets look at the folks who served in the post before. John, former National Security adviser. Mike mcconnell. Former director of nsa. Dennis blare. Commanded all u. S. Forces in the pacific. David gumper principle deputy. James clapper served as director of two of the intelligence agencies. Mike, 30 years in the cia. Dan coats and joseph mcgir. Thats the resume of the previous occupants. A trump loyalist. The question is do they does he have the knowledge experience to fill this role to protect the American Homeland from threats to the home lan . Does he . No. Based on the compare the resumes. It doesnt fit the law. The law as passed in 2004 for people with experience to coordinate and prevent attacks. The question then is why . What does he need its not like the attorney general that can have his back and protect him legally. How does this help him . We learned he wanted somebody political. How does it help him . The attacks trump has made on the intel agents are public. They dont need to be revealed by private emails, etc. So the president attacked the intel agencies and said theyre not loyal to him. They are part of the deep state. Accused them of being compared to nazi germany. Scum. President s words about his own intelligence agencies. Forget about the president as an american at home these are agencies that are that committed to and the people who work for them to rooting out threats to americans at home and abroad. So, the question is, is the president using these and appointing people to head the agencies to protect americans or protect himself . Right. And compare the resumes of the folks who occupied the posts before. To rick grinl. And acting before, rick will be acting again. Why wont he just put someone in there . A Trump Administration thing. He has loads of acting folks who dont therefore the senate has a right and a role of approving president ial appointments to the positions. But the president own chief of staff is an acting. So senators and elected by people at home watching tonight have not had a voice in deciding whether those folks are up to the role. All right. Stay with me. I want to bripg in James Clapper former director of National Intelligence. I appreciate you joining us. When you saw this pick what went through your head . Well, i think the first thing is that i feel badly for the Intelligence Community and the men and women in it. Notably my former staff. Because this constant turn over is not good for continuity and stability. Of course as jim just spoken about what the intelligence prevention act says about what the qualifications are supposed to be for the incumbent of the position. And ambassador grinl doesnt comport with that. In the letter or spirit of it. So its a bad message. It appears to me this was somewhat of a bargain of a convenience. For the ambassador who from the reporting wanted out of germany. Out of the position and come back to washington. This is perhaps a good interim assignment. And while this does is in my view marginalize the position. And jim very passionately and articulately described why that isnt good and the position is so important. Probably the law would allow this acting to serve another 210 days which Wont Quite Get it up to the election in november. My view is what the president will prefer to do is avoid a confirmation hearing until after the election. This is what our reporting is. That president wants someone who is sufficiently loyal in that role. You say this will have huge repercussions trt intel community. Speaking truth to power. Why do you say na . Exactly that reason. I think its very unlikely that this acting director is going to say neigh con ter veens the world view of President Trump. Thats not good over time when the actual intelligence the assessments are suppressed in favor of a not irritating the president and not his world view. Thats bad for the safety and security of the country. I want to ask about this. The source says some republicans are out raged with the job grenl has done as ambassador. Any chance the president will get push back from gop lawmakers . Maybe on longer term appointment. Until that the president has the authority to appoint this person for 210 days and they will be directs 17 Intelligence Agency ts in the country for that time period. The president used this power for multiple positions. I want to quote for a senior official in reacting to this. They said the dni is not an activist position. If it becomes one the community can fracture as it was pre9 11. That point is important the dni was appointed created as a role because pre9 11 the issue was that intel agencies were not communicating. And sharing information to prevent an attack. Thats an important role. Its not a small role in this environment. We have many beyond terror threats. Russia, china, north korea. You want someone in the role who can coordinate and has the respect of the agencies. And experience analyzing that intelligence. If its a political appointee without the experience, that makes us less safe. Thats something that matters to everybody watching at home. Director, whats the final word . Well, i think jim laid it out extremely well. This is not a position where you learn the abcs of intelligence on the job. And there needs to be a fulltime champion for integration and collaboration and coordination across the Intelligence Community which is not a natural act for the components of the i can attest six and a half years of dni. Thank you. Bloomberg facing accusations of racism because of his support for stop and frisk. Tonight the judge who ruled the policy was unconstitutional is speaking out. [ fastpaced drumming ] bloomberg surging in National Polls but also getting increase scrutiny on the record of mayor of new york city. Especially on his signature policy which is stop and frisk. Joining me now is the former District Court judge who in 2013 ruled it unconstitutional. Judge, thank you so much. I appreciate you joining us. People in new york city can yo help us out. People know what stop and frisk is. For those around the country who dont know the policy. Please explain it and why it was so devastating to minorties in new york. Its actually permitted by the u. S. Supreme court. A major decision. But you have to do it in a constitutional way. What happened here in new york there was racial profiling. Instead of stopping people based on reasonable suspicion, that a crime is about to be committed or being committed. They stop people because they were young, black males between 18 and 25. And thats not a basis for a stop. Just stopping people randomly. Not because there was suspicion or a crime. It wasnt exactly random. They were going into minority neighborhoods and targeting black males. Thats in the random. Stop and frisk say it lowered crime. It didnt. The number of stops plummeted from a peek of nearly 700,000 in 2011 to 11,000 in 2018. The crime rate was essentially stayed the same. Or dropped. What is it . Both. Thats the good news. When i issued my opinion in 2013 the fear according to the mayor was the city was going it blow up. It didnt. Crime rates continue to drop or worse stay steady. To me which shows its not why crime dropped in the first place. There was a lot of reasons. It wasnt because of targeting minority kids. Hes getding hammered for this. Criticized a lot for the policy. He says he has apologized. Only a few days before he wanted to run for president. And his excuse, he is saying that once he realized that it was a terrible policy and affecting minorties that he cut it 90 . Well, thats not so. The reason that it began to drop was because of court opinions. Court rulings. The fact is thats when it really began to drop. As the rulings came out you realize this was going to end. He vowed to appeal it and fight it. He said the city would blow up. Its not true the reason it dropped 95 is because he realized it wasnt good. He defended it in 2015. You have seen, you heard the tape that came out. Thats years later. He was still defending it as the best crime facting tactic. This is from an opinion piece in the new york times. I was the judge in stop and frisk. I dont think bloomberg is racist. You write you think he believed the program was helping to protect communities of color. Writing quote the most i can say is he had a pure heart but empty head. The program was very poorly executed. If hes the best person to head the democratic ticket this fall then his fail policy should not prevent him from assuming the most important role. Why do you think its not disqualifying . First of all i really do not think the man was racist. I think that he believed that he was protecting the victims. And the victims were in minority communities. He had a good heart and empty head. He meant well. He inherited this policy from the previous mayor. Rudy giuliani and his Police Commissioner was committed to it. Commissioner kelly convinced him if you terrorize the kids they are leave the guns at home. He began to believe he became a true believer he was going to reduce crime and protect victims. Who were minority. I dont think hes a racist and i put in that oped that the good things the mayor did for minority communities. There are a lot of them. If you look into the record he did good things for job opportunity and education and economic advancement. I think the man isnt racist. He means well but made one huge error. I called it unforgivable. The error is unforgivable but doesnt mean hes disqualified. If hes the best man to defeat the current president im for it. He also defended the policy during 2016. Hes backing away from it. I remember the first president ial debate he said a very bad judge stopped this thing. Talking about you. Talking about me. Emergency meeting a federal judge to discuss concern over trump intervention in the Justice Department. Postponed today and say they have done anything like this. The federal Judge Association has fought for increase pay for federal judges and has a nice reception the the white house as far as i remember they have never been concerned about policy issue such as the concern they have now. Which is the independence of the judiciary. We have three branchs of government. The judiciary is protect i of the independence. It doesnt want the executive branch or the legislative branch interfering. I think what they saw happen with judge jackson and well know the sentence tomorrow, shes going fard with it. They saw an attack on her personally. Not the first one. But worse than that is interfering with the department of justice recommendation as to what the appropriate sentence would be. Done in every case. The line prosecutor submit a letter typically within the sentencing guidelines. This idea that it was outrageously long recommendation. It wasnt. It was within the guideline range. Thats always what they do. Judges get letters routinely and judges do what they think is right. Theyre not over influenced by the letter. They get a letter from the defense and Probation Department and do what they think is right. It was all unnecessary to interfere. No matter attorney general barr says i believe hes influenced by what the president says he wants to see. It is an honor. I have heard so much about you. Its an honor to meet you. If theres any reason to have you back i would love you to be back and talk about. My pleasure to do so. Sanders has a commanding lead. What happens when more candidates drop out of the race . John kasich will weigh in next. There he is. Wild thing, you make my heart sing. You make everything. Groovy. Done yet . Yeah, yeah, sorry, sorry. You sure . Hmm. Mmm. Come on, come on, wild thing. If you ride, you get it. Geico motorcycle. Fifteen minutes could save you fifteen percent or more. I am totally blind. And non24 can throw my days and nights out of sync, keeping me from the things i love to do. Talk to your doctor, and call 8442142424. Now to the state of the race a pack and insults flying as we get ever closer to the all important nevada caucus days away on saturday. Sanders is the front runner. As the other candidates take aim at him. And bloomberg. Lets discuss now. John kasich is here. So youre out and about the candidates are going after each other. Lashing out. Bloomberg taking a will the of incoming. You talked to people. What are you hearing about bloomberg . Well, i think what were hearing is something i thought for a long time that is when you have 58 billion and you can go on tv and paint a picture of yourself, youll rise. Youll go up in the polls. They have a sophisticated operation. Some of the young people in the offices downtown theyre getting text from the Bloomberg Campaign. They like him. The ones that are telling me they like him. And theyre republican. They like him. So, i think theyll throw everything they can but the kitchen sink at him. As long as it is a prize fight. In the early debate he needs to survive. Get through them. He doesnt have to go out and score a hit a three pointer. He needs to be good and confident and calm and not lose his cool. Which i suspect he will be. And hes going to have a lot of fire power. Look how hes risen in the pole. He has good messages. He has sophisticated people and i think that hes going to get hammered. Hes running a different kind of campaign. Not the traditional kind of campaign. And whats interesting is they say hes trying to buy it. Its his money. If he wants to spend it running for president thats up to him. Its a silly charge. Stupid charge. People will agree with you about that. If you have that much money, why not . He doesnt have to ask. The thing about this, he can spend a couple billion and at the end of the campaign hell have more money than what he started with. Serious. Okay. So maybe youre right. Theres legitimate concerns about money in politics and election that need to be addressed. Sure. Of course. When you get an email i havent got any. I have heard people when you get an email from the Bloomberg Campaign theres no can you give me money. Its talking about policy. The annoy thing ant the other folks you get an email can you give me some money. There you go. The interesting thing is they say we dont want want all this money influence in politics. He isnt taking money from anybody. Hes spending his own. Thats the ultimate independence in politics when you can selffund. Im sure you can selffund if you were running. You have that money. Its difficult for most. Well talk about the guy who is the actual front runner that sand. Well take a break and be right back. Youve been hearing a lot about 5g. But theres 5g. And then theres verizon 5g. Were building the most powerful 5g experience for america. Its more than 10x faster than some other 5g networks. I share your determination to bring this country together to finally make progress for the american people. Bloomberg im mike bloomberg, and i approve this message. howling wind howling wind okay back with me. John kasich the former ohio governor. Governor, theres a cnn poll that shows sanders is the front runner. 28 . The more moderate candidates battle for dominance. If moderate democrats dont get behind a candidate soon could his momentum just take him to the finish line and get him all the way to the nomination . Remember its proportional. I wish in 16 we had proportion. Trump probably wouldnt have gotten enough to be the nominee. In this case it was proportion. As you can see all the democrats, moderate establishment democrats, elected officials. They are want to stop bernie because they believe bernie with the medicare for all and taking insurance away and it seems like he duntd like rich people. And doesnt like corporations. This isnt going to work. It wont sell even with the blue traditional democrats in my opinion. They will see whos the best person to beat trump and not cost them all their seats. It will get down to which moderate survives. Again, if you got 58 billion, you were the mayor of new york, youre in good shape. Look how hes risen. That doesnt mean we count out joe biden or the other buttigieg or count klobuchar out. You look at the resources and start looking at who has the money to compete on supertuesday. It starts to become pretty clear. It would be a two man race. I dont want to count them out. Thats not fair to them. We have a ways to go. Okay. You went through this ruthless 2016 republican primary. You said you wish it was proportional. What lessons should democrats take from that . Everybody tries to get everybody out of the race. Trying to say we should get out because of whatever and i think the lesson that you have to have is who is the person, you have trump. You covered his issues. Whats happening with the Justice Department and state department. The pentagon. Whats happening with the head of intelligence. Why is he bringing his friends and all those questions. All the tweeting and that. What it gets down to in november do you want more of that or a democrat . Thats what it will get down to. If you get a democrat that i believe is still center right or moderate or center left. I think thats the best chance of being able to beat trump. The question is will the sanders people if he doesnt get picked will they vote . Whos the democrat . I think it has to be somebody more moderate. I put in the category is biden, amy. Buttigieg and i put bloomberg. Those are the ones that the most moderate in my opinion have the best chance of not frightening the suburban republicans. Who dont like trump who are looking for another choice. You pick somebody that says ill take your Health Insurance away and give you its not going to work. It has to be somebody more closer to the center. Thats where the americans are. The democrats have to be united and make up their mind they want to win and not just take ball and go home if they didnt get picked. Thank you, sir. Im Bernie Sanders and i approve this message. A lawyer for wikileaks founder Julian Assange telling a london court a former congressman offered him on behalf of President Trump in exchange for denying russian involvement in the dnc email leak. According to assanges attorney, Dana Rohrbacher offered a pardon if he would play ball saying the russians had nothing to do with the leak. Both rohrbacher and the white house are denying a advantages claims with white house Stephanie Grisham saying the president barely knows rohrbacher other than he is an excongressman and he never spoke with him on this subject or almost any subject. Bradley mauser, attorney and deputy executive director of James Madison project. Gentlemen, thank you so much. Good evening. Assanges lawyer said he was offered that pardon to clear russia of hacking the dnc. The white house denies it. What do you think . Well, don, its hard to imagine three more unreliable places to get information. The white house, assange, and congressman rohrbacher. All three of them have terrible credibility records. But there is some contemporary press that has rohrbacher after he did visit with assange at the ecuadorian embassy, made a Public Statement to the effect that he had some dynamite news, that there was talk that he could get a pardon based on this news. And implication being that he would talk to the president about it. So thats where it started and this is just the latest round. I cant imagine his lawyer going into court and making the representation that was made if there isnt something that they have where they believe theres something there. Brad, i want to bring you in. Youre skeptical, but assanges lawyer says they have evidence. We know that the president met with representative rohrbacher and that rohrbacher subsequently met with assange. Yes, we have limited details of what we know has been confirm. All we know is the president met briefly with rohrbacher and there was a separate meeting in the u. K. Between rohrbacher and assange. We dont know anything of what was said in those meetings. We have no confirmation beyond these sources these anonymous sources. All we know is there were discussions. Now, this would fit a pattern for donald trump if this is what happened. We saw this with michael cohen. We saw this with the Mueller Report. And we saw this with the ukraine scandal in terms of how he uses these auxiliaries, subordinates, these helpers to do things and he has plausible deniability. So i believe he would do this, but take this with heaping massfuls of salt until we see something besides assanges lawyers statement to believe this is what happened in as clear a way as it has been described. So, listen, john, the judge in the case ruled that the allegation will be allowed in court. So, well likely learn more in the coming days. If it does turn out to be true, right, is it another example of President Trumps using President Trump using his executive powers to undermine the russia investigation . Hes trying to, you know, reverse what mueller did . I would think he would not want assange to be extradited to the United States where heed face multiple charges. I think there are 18count indictment against him thats sitting under seal or barely revealed. And i just dont think trump wants that to come over. And so what hes doing with this, if its true, he could undercut extradition, which is based in england, if there is some sort of politicalized charge involved, the u. K. Might cut him some slack and not send him to the United States. We know the russia report, Mueller Report said about russia in the 2016 election. Is he trying to rewrite history on this, bradley . Absolutely. Theyve already been talking about the idea of going in, if he wins reelection, if the republicans retake the house, try and basically rewrite how everything went down, expunge the impeachment, try to pretend this neverin on his legacy, he doesnt like the stain on his record. He would like to be able to rewrite some of these details. Some of what john was saying, if assange got extradited and he was ultimately prosecuted here, some of what he knows the president said he couldnt recall about contacts between the campaign, particularly roger stone and donald trump and between them and wikileaks, that could come out and donald trump doesnt want that because hes already kind of buried this once before. He doesnt want it coming back. John, i want to talk about roger stone, okay. Longtime associate roger stone, trump associate roger stone. Hes going to be sentenced tomorrow by judge Amy Berman Jackson. Attorney barr intervened and the justice officials less time than they wanted or recommended and they later resigned. What are you expecting to see tomorrow . Im expecting to see her in the area of about five years. I dont think shell go to the top of the sentencing guideline. Theres been a lot of publicity. If you look at what happened during watergate, one of the longest sentences went to gordon liddy who was the bad actor at the center of it all, and he didnt even get five years because jimmy carter commuted his sentence. So i just think shell be in the fiveyear, maybe sixyear range, but thats just a guess. Listen, shes free to impose whatever she wants. Do you think shes going to be affected by all this politics and everything swirling around this case . No, i think shes more or less she understands whats going on. She knows how the president operates. I do think shes going to dive a little bit into whats gone down at d. O. J. And try to get some answers as to what on earth has happened, try to get some understanding of it. But, look, Amy Berman Jackson is not going to be intimidated by any of this, shes not going to be influenced. Shell make whatever she believes is the best decision. I more or less agree with john. Somewhere in the vicinity of 4 to 5 years is what roger stone will get. Quickly, do you think there will be a pardon, john . After hes finally sentenced . Not before the election. Wow, all right. There is a prediction for you. Thank you, bradley. Thank you, john. I appreciate that. Absolutely. And thank you, everyone, for watching. We appreciate you watching as well. Now we get over to my colleagues chris cuomo and erin burnett for election coverage. D. Lemon, thank you. Hello, everyone. I am chris cuomo special coverage of tonights democratic president ial debate in nevada. Michael bloomberg, welcome to the arena. It was his first night and he felt it. Lets bring in the power players to get a take. Gloria borger, whats the big headline . Bloomberg was awful. Im sorry. This was the moment that the dnc got criticized for, for letting bloomberg in this debate. And now im wondering why the other candidates were criticizing him because he wasn wasnt practiced at debating. He hasnt done this in more than a decade. The notion, even foremike bloomberg, that you can step in and go toe to toe on this stage with people who have been doing it, what, andrew yang,
