Laced tirade by the secretary of state mike pompeo after she repeatedly questioned him about the Trump Administrations policy on ukraine. And the state of the race. With just over a week to go before the Iowa Caucuses, Elizabeth Warren gets a big endorsement tonight and theres also good news for Bernie Sanders. But lets get to President Trumps impeachment trial. His defense team beginning their opening arguments trying to undercut the house managers case that the president abused his office and obstructed congress. Cnns sarah murray has more now. Sarah . Reporter well, don, look, the arguments were brief. I think they were more reserved than a lot of people thought they would be. And at the end of the day the president s defense team pleased President Trump the first day of arguments. The president did absolutely nothing wrong. Reporter President Trumps defense team took to the floor arguing that the democrats have failed to make their case that the president should be we moved from office. Today were going to confront them on the merits of their argument. Now they have the burden of proof and they have not come close to meeting it. Reporter they accused democrats of trying to overturn the last election and preempt the next one. Theyre here to perpetrate the most massive interference in an election in american history, and we cant allow that to happen. Reporter trump team aimed to poke holes claiming the democrats didnt provide context around witness testimony and using clips of witness testimony that bolstered trumps defense. The fact that they came here for 24 hours and hid evidence from you is further evidence that they dont really believe in the facts of their case. Reporter they insisted trump never made a white house meeting and security aid contingent on the ukraine opening investigations into joe biden and the 2016 election, noting trump never expolice sidly asked for such a quid pro quo in the call. The transcript shows that the president did not condition either Security Assistance or a meeting on anything. The paused Security Assistance funds arent even mentioned on the call. Reporter and they raised testimony from some Administration Officials who believe trumps call for investigation was simply a request rather than a demand. Do you believe in your opinion that the president of the United States demanded that president zelensky undertake these investigations . No, sir. Reporter they made the claim that the president is invested in cracking down on ukraine. You will hear that President Trump has a strong record on confronting russia. You will hear that President Trump has a strong record of support for ukraine. Reporter but theres little effort of trumps interest in corruption save for the call of investigation into the bidens which also directly involves the president s personal interests. While the administration has taken steps to crack down on russia, trumps public statements have undermined those efforts. Over the course of their brief two hour arguments, trumps lawyers took shots at democrats lengthy and often repetitive allegations. Were not going to play the clip seven times. He said it, you saw it. Reporter as well as house intelligence chair adam schiff. Do you know who didnt show up in the Judiciary Committee . Chairman schiff. Reporter they wrapped up just afternoon. I thank you for your attention and i look forward to seeing you on monday. Reporter afterward, House Democratic managers argued the president s team did not refute the claim that trumps team solicited assistance. What was striking to me about the president s presentation today is they dont contest the basic architecture of the scheme. They do not contest that the president solicited a foreign nation to interfere in our election to help him cheat. Reporter the president s team has 22 more hours to make its case but says its not planning to use it all. Now, don, the president s team has the run of the floor on monday when they get back. You can bet the democrats are still going to be making their case in press conferences and theyll push any moderate senators that can swing in their direction. They need to see more witnesses and more documents. Sara, stand by. Im going to bring in phillip bump and guy smith, a former clinton impeachment advisor. Welcome to the program, guys. Speaking of the guys, guy, youre going to go first. They said President Trump didnt do anything wrong. Since when is asking a foreign power to investigate a rival okay . When is that right . Its more of the gas lighting that they do all the time and theyre staggering to do it on the floor of the United States senate. And if you or i solicited a foreign person, not just a foreign government, it would be a violation of law. And they are completely ignoring th that. They were lawyerly. Notice they didnt even wear flags on their lapels and they were brief. Thats nice. And then you saw the white House Counsel on the floor of the United States senate propagating a russian spy service propaganda that ukraine was involved in the election. Unbelievable. But even even president clinton admitted that he did something wrong, but, i mean, its not something americans will ever hear from President Trump or even from anyone who is associated with him or your attorneys. Youre right. President clinton did. He apologized repeatedly, not at the beginning, but he did. He did it repeatedly. He was genuinely contrite. Think about if we were at that point in the trial now to where president clinton was at this point in his trial, if President Trump had said, you know, i really i really screwed up here and i shouldnt have said that and let me tell you what i really was trying to do, youre right, well never hear anything like that. Phillip, trumps defense team is trying to assert that the democrats are trying to steal the 2020 election. Will that resonate with Republican Voters . With the senators, i should say. Well, thats a whole different issue. You hit the nail on the head in who hes trying to appeal to right there. The first answer to your question, im sort of fascinated by the sense that theyre trying to reverse the 2016 narrative. Its not that. This is a constitutional procedure for addressing things which can be addressed immediately through elections. This argument about 2020 i think they see as obviously part of what has compelled donald trump to a lot of his base is this fact that hes constantly being embattl embattled. They think they are going to be able to rise to his defense, stand with him, say, no, he deserves to be on the ballot. But at the same time thats who everyone is talking to. The only people that republicans that trumps legal team knows to keep those republicans in line, they just need to keep republicans happy with trump. They are making a case. Donald trump needs you to stand with him. Democrats are trying to keep him off the ballot in 2020. Those people are going to stand with donald trump and therefore the senators are going to stand with trump. Its interesting. Theyre saying hes embattled. Hes always being attacked. Hes always attack willing other people or always counter punching. Its fascinating and to hear the republican senators, especially the ones who are supposed to be, you know, on the fence, right, who are saying theyre so offended. Like, oh, my god, i had to have somebody say a bad word on the senate floor. Have they ever heard this president . Have they met donald trump before . Theyre all vapors. For your viewers, vapors, oh, my god, this is really happening to me from those of you who arent from the south. Whats happening, think of this when they were all upset, this fake being upset about talking about head on a plate, yet when marsha blackburn, when she attacks the patriotism of kournl vendman, not one of them said a word. This is an example of this dichotomy of its just hard to describe. Its really its outrageous. I cant i cant believe it. Listen, democrats are saying, guy, that the trump folks, the lawyers help their case for witnesses today. Yes. Did they . I think they did. The reason was they created more questions and the only way to answer those questions is to hear from mulvaney and pompeo and bolton for sure and the whistleblower. What are we going to do . I just want to say on that point, they specifically said that no one has tied donald trump exactly to these actions except Mick Mulvaney did. It made the case. Lets get Mick Mulvaney in here. What are we going to hear monday . Jek jay sekulow we are going to have witnesses. Okay. We shall see. You heard it here. Thank you, guy. Phillip, youre going to hang around. The new recording that shows President Trump talking at length with lev parnas, the indicted giuliani associate that the president claims he doesnt know. The tape made and sarah murray is rejoining us here. President trump and giuliani associate lev parnas are talking ukraine and talking about firing ambassador Marie Yovonovitch, right . Yes. This is a curious conversation for the president to have with somebody he says he doesnt know. Theres a portion that talks about ukraine and ambassador Marie Yovonovitch. Listen to the president talking to the president about her. The biggest problem there, i think, where you need to start is weve got to get rid of the ambassador. Shes still left over the ambassador of the ukraine . Yeah. Shes basically Walking Around telling everybody, wait, shes going to get impeached. Really. Shell be gone tomorrow. I dont remember his name. Now that we have a secretary of state get rid of her. Get her out. I dont care, get her out of the room. Take her out, okay . Do it. So you hear him say, get her out. Take her out. This is in the spring of 2018. Its long before shes actually removed from her position as the ambassador to ukraine but its telling, don, that you see President Trump there. You hear President Trump there essentially taking the word of lev parnas that Marie Yovonovitch is saying these things about him. Remember, Marie Yovonovitch testified she never said these things but he seems all too willing to take lev parnass word on these issues. And were joined with matt from the New York Times. A donor at a dinner can get the president to dismiss her on the spot. Really . Apparently so. This has got to be great if you are a foreign intelligence, you have a regulatory issue, get the dinner with the president , get a donor maybe you know, tell them to tell the president what you want to hear, hey, maybe theyll get rid of an a. M. Bambassador you. Its so amazing. I want you to listen to them talking about ukraine at this dinner. Here it is. They have everything there. Theyre right now waiting for your support a little bit to make sure because obviously if they go on their own, russia wont let them do it because theyll cut off a lot of their revenue. How long are they going to last in a fight with russia . Not very long. Without us, not very long. Russia, also keep in mind, talks a big game. Theyre not ready to play. Wow. You hear President Trump, he asks how long ukraine would ask without aid a full year before he withheld aid. This is outrageous. I mean, its it is something. Theres a lot in there. Theres another point in which donald trump, theyre talking about oil exploration. Donald trump says ukraine has oil . He asks this random guy, a donor, this is at a separate pact, america with action. Parnas makes these cases. Hes asking for Foreign Policy advice from this random guy who he may have met or has met a couple of times before. I think theres an interesting subtext which goes unnoticed. The next month parnas goes and talks to Pete Sessions and sessions asks for the removal of yovonovitch. We know she got pushed out it was in part because of this ukrainian prosecutor was mad at her, was advocating for it. It goes back a lot farther than we realize. This is where our Foreign Policy is coming from . Back room of the trump hotel from random donors, i guess so. Wow. Okay. So this is crazy. Matt, the fact that parnas associate igor fruman is able to tape this, at the beginning you can see video of what appears to be President Trump. I mean, you can see it, right . There it is right there. Arent there security risks there . Matt . Yeah. You know, of course there are. I think that any kind of ordinary presidency, you know, who gets to bring Electronic Devices into these dinners is limited. This is a casual dinner. The president is not talking about affairs of state with random donors in previous presidencies. Now its kind of a freeforall. Thats where the issue is here. The president doesnt get to behave like the rest of us do. I can go to dinner and complain about things. Thats fine. The president chose this job, ran for it. One of the responsibilities that comes with it is discretion. Minding who your audience is, what they are, what they might be. Minding yourself and not pawing off, deciding youre going to fire an ambassador because some donor you dont know very well told you was a good idea. This is unbelievable. Really, i just i have to play more because this is really, really unbelievable this is happening. Its unbelievable this is not part of whats happening now in washington, this trial. I want to play another big chunk from the recording where they talk about everything from ukraine to the bidens. Listen. Were in the process of purchasing an Energy Company in ukraine right now. That should help cut off how did you do that . Dont ask. They love you though. Great. Great fighters. Great fighters. They love you. I bet they are. Theyre great fighters. Theyve been fighting for so long, they dont know what to do without fighting. Russias had them theyre waiting for direction. Theyre waiting for direction, i can tell you that much. I think theres definitely a good opportunity. But its a problem. Big problem. Javelin missiles. Yes. I read about it today. It must have happened in the past couple of days. Do you think russia ever goes in and gets rid of ukraine . They would love to. They would love to but theyre scared of you. But they got what they wanted. They wanted access to the state. No, they want ukraine. Ukraine is a vast not even the resources in ukraine are tremendous. Like west texas. Absolutely. Not only that, but ukraine is sort of a in terms of supplying the pipeline. Ukraine has oil . A lot. Number one. Ukraine . Yes. How come number one in europe. They dont have any money. Exactly. They why arent Companies Going in there . Too risky . Exactly. They supported clintons for all of these years and hoping th that biden. Yeah, that was a big thing. Okay. Listen, i dont know that that i believe that one of the sons, don jr. , was at this meeting. It sounds like i cant im not sure if it was him, it sounds like him. Theyre discussing javelins, discussing Foreign Policy. He doesnt know him. I take pictures with a lot of people. Why is this not part of the why is this not part of the trial. Hes talking about the bidens, hes the reason its not part of the trial, it just came out. This is the risk for those republican senators. Who knows what can emerge in a month, two months, tomorrow, six hours that impugns donald trump more directly than that . I will say though one of the defenses that his attorneys raised today, donald trump was so strong on ukraine. You hear him in that recording. Donald trump didnt know the javelins had gone to the ukraine. I just read about it. The first time donald trump hears about military aid is from a june 18th message. He sees it in the news. Theres no indication that the state undercuts severely that he was on board with ukraine from the start. Matthew . We know from other officials, previous reporting, that they had to really push to sneak this ukraine aid in. This wasnt something trump wanted to do. To phillips point, he seems oblivious. Arent you flabbergasted by this . Completely. Hes going from javelin missiles, oil hes talking to guys who why is he talking about this to these people who dont have clearance . Theyre just two schmos who just showed up at the white house . On top of that, the way his mind is working. Wait, they have oil. Why arent there Companies Going in . Why arent they rich . Oh, my gosh. This is the secret to wealth. Ive got to go. This is nuts. Thank you both. Thank you. Reporter asks the secretary of state a question about ukraine and he screams obscenities and demands she proves she can find ukraine on an unmarked match. Its conduct unbecoming of the secretary of the United States, but is it the new normal for the Trump Administration . To be honest a little dust it never bothered me. Until i found out what it actually was. Dust mite droppings eeeeeww dead skin cells gross so now, i grab my swiffer sweeper and heavyduty dusters. Duster extends to three feet to get all that gross stuff gotcha and for that nasty dust on my floors, my sweepers on it. The textured cloths grab and hold dirt and hair no matter where dust bunnies hide. No more heebie jeebies. Phew. Glad i stopped cleaning and started swiffering. Tonight a reporter for npr saying secretary of state mike pompeo screamed obscenities at her after she asked him questions about policy on ukraine. Allison stewart and ryan lissa are here. Good evening. Ryan, lets start when Nprs Mary Louise kelly was asking the secretary of state if he owed an apology. Where are you defended Marie Yovonovitch . Ive defended every Single Person on this team. Can you point me towards your remarks where you have defended Marie Yovonovitch . Ive defended her. Ive said all im going to say today to you. Thanks for the repeated opportunity to do so. Appreciate that. We know what happened after that exchange. He called this i mean, i should say highly respected reporter into his office and basically berated her and made her take a pop quiz, which to me is a form of kind of like trying to degrade someone, trying to humiliate them and changed the subject. You know, were talking about this now, were not talking about the fact as much the way as secretary of state he did not defend this ambassador. So i think the questioning was sort of a model of how to be polite and respectful but firm when government officials obfuscate. So it is nice that this is getting a little more attention, but the reasons for it are very disappointing, the way that he treated her is really, really crude and awful. And as a lot of people have said today, its people mirroring the boss. Clearly she got under his skin. This is what the secretary said to kelly in his office after the interview. Watch this. He shouted at me for about the same amount of time as the interview itself had lasted. He was not happy to have been questioned about ukraine. He asked, do you think Americans Care about ukraine . He used the f word in that sentence and many others. Well, alice, listen, she is a respected journalist. Shes doing her job. Npr is standing by her reporting. Is this how a cabinet member should comport themselves when asked a tough question . No. Mary louise has credentials. She has great character. A couple of things come to mind. First of all, from a communications standpoint when youre setting up an interview with your boss who is secretary of state, there are certain ground rules you have. Taking the issue of ukraine off the table is pretty unheard of. He should have gone into that knowing there might be certain ground rules but be prepared to answer that question. Thats a pretty easy question for him to answer straight out. Second of all, theres no reason and no need for him to go off on her and to call her names. He could have very easily answered the question and moved on. Said something nice about yovonovitch and moved on. The other point to what ryan said, the whole thing about giving her a pop quiz, pointing out where is ukraine on the map. Ive heard about doctors without borders, but maps without countries is ridiculous. Where did he get it . To quiz her in such a way i think is really disrespectful. It goes to show she certainly knew what she was talking about and this doesnt happen. The staff failed him and they should have prepped him better. Hes a grown man. He should have known that. Given his position and what his responsibilities are, he should have been certainly prepared to answer the question. It could have very easily been handled with a one sentence answer and moved on. There was no need. The first time she asked that question you could tell he got on edge and got riled up just at the very first mentioning of it. He could have dissolved the question very quickly and unfortunately he is mirroring his boss. Ryan, attacking the press, is this an example of copying the boss . Yeah. We all know this is becoming more and more of something that we deal with in the media, especially in washington, especially with trump officials. We saw it recently with our colleague, manu raju. Im currently being sued by a u. S. Congressman whos, you know, suing a number of other people. So we are just in an environment right now where the press has always been a punching bag. Always been able to score points by beating up on the press. Politicians are getting a little bit more political mileage out of it and, you know, you just have to you just have to do your job, call it out when it sort of crosses a line the way it did with pompeo. We havent spoke about what he did next. I didnt get to it. Ive got to go. Im out of time. You guys are long winded. I love you, but youre long winded. I have to run. Thank you both. I appreciate your time. Senators running for president spent the week stuck in washington with only days to go until the Iowa Caucuses. Well take you to iowa to let you know how senators sanders, klobuchar are trying to make the most of this week end. Im your mother in law. And i like to question your every move. Like this left turn. Its the next one. You always drive this slow . How did you make someone i love . That must be why youre always so late. I do not speed. And thats saving me cash with drivewise. Get published now, call for your free publisher kit today now to the state of the race. The first week of the impeachment trial came to a close. How are they making up for lost time . Joining me is cnns m. J. Lee and hyung law. Braving the elements out there. M. J. , lets start with you. Nine days to go until the Iowa Caucuses. I cant believe im saying that. Its getting pretty close here. The Des Moines Register is endorsing senator Elizabeth Warren. I want you to take a look at her reaction when she found out. How significant look at her. Shes excited about that. This is a significant moment, right . It is. Judging by the little dance that you saw her do there, obviously this is happy news for Elizabeth Warren tonight. You know, this is not to say that the Des Moines Register ed board endorsement predicts who the winner of the caucuses will be, it doesnt really tell the future. It doesnt really crown someone the winner but i think the significance of this for the campaign is that it comes at a moment when i think the campaign was eager to have this kind of good news, right . Theres no question that senator warrens campaign has seen a dip in poll numbers in some of the early states, including iowa, and we are so close to the Iowa Caucuses, as you said, don, so i think this kind of news is going to energize the campaign and the candidate. We saw that tonight in muskatene. You were at her town hall events and what did she talk about . What have voters been telling you . You really cant tell that we are just days away from the Iowa Caucuses. Senator warren at her events today in iowa ended her remarks with a new sort of closing message focused on fighting and fighting back. She said, it is patriotic to want to fight back, and this is not the time to go for small things. Clearly the fact that she is switching up how she is ending her remarks sort of signaled that she wants this to be sort of her closing message as we get closer and closer to the Iowa Caucuses. Just talking to voters here in iowa, both this weekend and last weekend, i am so struck by how many of the voters we still see to say they are so undecided and they are weighing several candidates. We have voters who on one day will go to multiple events. There are candidates who will say this is my third time seeing Elizabeth Warren. Its just another reminder that things are incredibly fluid and there are going to be voters who do not make up their mind until literally the day of the Iowa Caucuses. Now to keyung in bettendorf, ireland. The scott county democrats event this evening, you spoke with senator Amy Klobuchar about how difficult it was for her to juggle campaigning so close to the Iowa Caucuses while the impeachment trial is happening. Listen to this. Did i ever think those last few weeks i wouldnt really be able to be here on the road . And, you know, im not a competitive person at all. Just kidding. You read about your opponents out there doing what you want to be doing, but then you have to step back and think two things. One, its our constitutional duty and its the right thing to do and, second, the people are going to get it. Is she concerned about the lack of face time shes getting in iowa . Well, in a word, yes. I mean, this is a state and every candidate here knows that every voter who they talk to knows it. Iowa is a caucus state that is one face to face. It is handshake by handshake. Theres so many undecided paem here, you have to persuade them one by one to come to your side. Thats what politics are like here. Shes talking about trying to cram in two weeks of campaigning into two days. Shes trying to step back and say, look, she believes that people understand she has a day job, a very important one. Shes trying to focus on the good news that, yes, senator warren may have the Des Moines Register endorsement but she got the New Hampshire union leader endorsement. She has to do well. How is the turnout for Amy Klobuchar . Keyung . Sorry. I just lost you for a second. You just asked about whether what she needs to turn out . How was the turnout at her event . So at this one, this was a number of democrats who are here for a couple of different reasons. This was more of a Group Gathering but at her individual town hall, don, i was surprised at how packed it was. It was packed beyond just the small side room that they had. People were spilling into the larger restaurant. Thats something ive seen as ive been out with her on the trail here in iowa. The places, the rooms the campaign has been booked have been continuously and completely packed when theyve had outflow. Appreciate it. Have fun on the campaign trail. Now i want to bring in any na turner. So good to see you. How are you doing . Good to hear you, don. Im fine. I bet you are after those polls in iowa. Yes. Senator sanders is, of course, one of the president ial candidates who has to be in washington. Hes addressing that tonight. Listen to this. Wonderful to be here especially when i woke up this morning, i wasnt sure i was going to be here. We learned this morning that the senate would adjourn before 1 00. We got on a plane and here we are. Though we have had to radically change our schedule in the last week. Toss that into the garbage can and begin anew. How is he coping with the impeachment schedule . While upholding his duty, he enjoys being out among the people. The beautiful thing about our campaign is that it always has been not me but us. The structure of the campaign is were out there complementing and being in the ready position as he is a juror in the trial. You just heard that the Des Moines Register is endorsing senator warren. Have you got a reaction to that . Well, you know, don, i can tell you as a former elected official, its always a beautiful thing. You feel good when you get those endorsements. The ultimate endorsement will come on election day. As the cnn polls show, New York Times polls show and the synergy, energy and enthusiasm on the ground shows that senator Bernard Sanders is surging and surging strong. Don, i mean, look, we are knocking two doors a second in iowa right now. Thats a whole lot of folks knocking on a whole lot of doors. That was my next question. Listen, he is clearly ahead of the pack. He has a big surge. Clearly. What do you think is behind this . Are you worried he hit the mark too soon . No, we just right. We just right. Right on time, don. The senator has been Holding Steady throughout the entire campaign and he is surging right at the right time. What it shows is his message is resonating. I know youre happy. I have to ask you this. I was on a roll. I have to ask you this joe rogan endorsement. Give me some words on that. What do you say to that . Joe rogan is not running, senator Bernie Sanders is rubbiru running. To have people help you hopefully win over hearts and minds. I certainly as a state senator have had people support me who probably i didnt always agree with, but this is about how do we defeat the worst president in modern history and the way that we do that is by having a big tent. The senator doesnt change his values. He has always been an ally even before it was popular. Yes. He hasnt changed. I wish i had more time to talk to you about it. We will talk soon more about it but ive got to run. Thank you very much. Thank you. Well be right back. Thank you. Not magenta not magenta. Im not going back to the store. The kitchen. It was halftime. Where did that come from . Just over a week to go to the Iowa Caucuses. Many of the top candidates are spending most of their time sitting silently. Is this shaking up the race . Which candidates are poised to snag the first victory of the 2020 primary. Mike mckinley is here of the circus. Good to see you, sir. You talked about some of the candidates. I want to play senator Amy Klobuchar as she is conducting a tele town hall. Hey, everybody. Welcome to tonights tele town hall with senator Amy Klobuchar. Were calling you in iowa from washington, d. C. , where the senate wrapped up impeachment hearings from the night. Sorry this is a little later than we planned, but i think you all understand i have my job and to fulfill my constitutional duty, im going to be there tomorrow and the next day and the next day which is why were doing this public town hall. You have honored me, all of you on the call, that you understand i cant be there in person. How tough is this to do an impeachment how do you pick the lock . So she has this tele town hall conference. She talked to 12,000 people that night. Thats a pretty effective way, if you cant be there, to do it. She did a lot of Satellite Television events. This is how the candidates in the senate are trying to maintain it. Its important for them to have good ground games in iowa . Absolutely. The key here, don, is in the last week in the Campaign Momentum is key. Six out of ten voters are looking for signals of momentum. Who gets the hot hand . Sanders has a hot hand. Warren gets the Des Moines Register endorsement. Thats a big deal. Klobuchar has lots of legislative surrogates. Thats key. All of these add up. The big factor in iowa, the caucus system is, if you dont get 15 , those others that dont get a second vote and the key is who is the second choice. The conventional wisdom is buttigieg and biden are there. Is that playing off for them . Klobuchar is getting satellite interviews from stations that are taking her from the senate. In a weird way, shes getting the best of both worlds. Because of Electronic Media . Because of Electronic Media shys getting satellite feeds. Biden is going to be talked about in the impeachment trial a lot. Will that be positive or negative . Every attack on biden has backfired. Bidens just saying he got him i dont think he wants me talking about hunter biden. Hes been resill jint. I was close. What do you think is going to happen . Listen, i think theres a case to be made for any of the top five that can win this thing and that will be key. Sanders is really hot right now. You ask all of those people whos their second choice, only 6 say hes a second choice. New season of mark mckinnons show, the circus is in it. The voice of gods. I dont think so. Congressman schiff is in the limelight. His background tells you a lot about him. Thats next. snoring whats going on . Its the 3pm slump. Should have had a p3. Oh yeah. Should have had a p3.
