Army officer and expert on ukraine expected to Tell Congress tomorrow that he heard President Trump pressure ukraines president to investigate joe biden. According to his Opening Statement, lieutenant vindman twice reported concerns out of his sense of duty. A major move by House Democrats many this impeachment. The full house will vote thursday on procedures to formalize the investigation. President trump goes to chicago. Rips into the city claiming the crime rate makes it embarrassing to america and less safe than afghanistan. Is there any truth to that. The president getting a chilly reception at the world series. Well, is this the president s own fault . He heard lock him up. Joe biden ramps up attacks on trump calling him an idiot for saying Russian Election interference is a hoax. How concerned are you about foreign interference in the election . Im concerned about foreign interference. Beyond me. Everybody knows whats going on. Trump not only doesnt want to do anything about it hes going out and asking for help. Come help me. Help me from biden being the nominee. He says russian interference is a hoax. Hes an idiot. Everybody knows this. Nobody doubts it. Lets get right to the breaking news. National security counsel top ukraine expert testifying to congress tomorrow. About the president july 25th ukraine call, a call he was listening in on. Joining me now. So glad to have you on. Thank you so much. More bomb shell testimony expected tomorrow by the National Security counselor this time expert ukraine expert. Hes the Opening Statement. I was concerned by the call i did not think it was proper to demand a Foreign Government ngt a u. S. Citizen. And i was worried about the implication for the u. S. Government support of ukraine. President trump argues that this phone call was perfect. Vindman who listened disagrees. Devastating testimony. And over laps with what we have seen from so many other witnesses. Im starting to look at this like the way i would a witness list. For trial. This witness list is a prosecutors dream. Usually when you get a list ready you have some credibility problems maybe baggage. This is a succession of career military and diplomatic nonpartisan public servants. I dont know how hell try to smear these people. Hes already tried today smear bill taylor. That will backfire. And i dont think he has anywhere to turn. Isnt that what you do to people under mine the credibility of a witness . Its hard to do with this. Its what people do when theyre desperate and know the evidence is mounting. New york times reports bolton drafted a memo in august that sought to restart the 391 million and the aid package. Trump refused to sign it. According to documents reviewed be by the time. Could we learn from vindman how the decision to with hold money was made . It sounds like he would have that information. Also the importance of john bolton as a witness. Clearly he knew this was going to be a big issue. He wrote a memo. Hes trying to paper it up and make a record. Bolton by a potentially an explosive witness against trump. Juliette, heres more. I realize if ukraine pursued a an investigation it would be entrepted into a partisan play. This would all under mine u. S. National security. Following the call, i reported my concerns to ncs lead counsel. Hes saying President Trumps pressure cam pan that ukraine investigate the bideens under mines gnash security. Thats remarkable. Its consistent with taylors testimony. Which so eloquently at the end of the testimony talks about this bipartisan support for the ukraine. Because it is an emerging democracy and we needed to support it. Putting it in the National Security realm what i found interesting about the testimony, here is a decorated war hero, someone who is in the military. Who originally went up the chain of command. The idea these people are rogue is ridiculous. Had goes up twice to the National Security counsel lawyers and clearly what they do is not satisfactory. He now has come out with testimony. The other important thing is it does show that transcript that was released originally really something was wrong with that. I dont know if it was edited or paraphrasing. The disconnect between the transcripts was bad enough. About what trump said to ukraine. And what the sort of anger and fear and concern coming out of people like hill. And vind lan and taylor and who else. Theres others down the pike. That disconnect shows the transcript was however bad it was. It was not bad enough. Max, vindman calls himself a patron. 20 years active duty United States officer. I served in a nonpartisan manner with the utmost respect and professionalism for republican and democratic a administrations. Hes credible. Hes driving home this point. This is about country over party. Incredibly powerful witness. Not just because he is a serving military officer and a combat vet of the iraq war. Also because he is an immigrant. I can empathize im an immigrant as well. From the soviet union. They have a starry eyed sense of american idealism and want the country to live up to its best self. He was shocked when he saw what was going on behind closed doors and felt compelled to come forward. I was asked recently when i was giving a survey of whats going on in the world in the u. S. It was a bleak picture. Somebody said isnt there any good news . Something hopeful. This is what i pointed to. Im hopeful there are dedicated public servants. They are not part of a deep state. They are part of the u. S. Government. They are dedicated to the constitution. And serving ideals and doing things that are hard and dangerous for them to do including going against their commander in chief. But they felt they swore that oath and feel the sense of duty and obligation to protect and defend the constitution and that is exactly what vindman is doing. It talks about that he was often sought out because of his background and figured he would be the best expert. He knows ukraine. Also among the least of the things the guy is a purple heart. You know. They can try calling him a deep state scum or whatever. Its not nobody with objectivity could believe that. He didnt just raise concerns about the call. He raised concerns about the july 10 meeting with ukrainian officials that included ambassador sondland, Energy Secretary and National Security adviser bolton. The meeting proceeded well until the ukrainians approached the subject of a meeting between two president s. That saw the meeting important in order to solidify the suppor of the most Important International partner. Sondland started to speak about ukraine delivering specific investigations in order to secure the meeting with the president. At which time ambassador bolton cut the meeting short. Quid pro quo. Yeah. It is. Its two themes we have seen repeated. Number one, the only thing trump wanted and the group shadow pretender forp policy people was investigation of the bideens and democrats. Sondland is in trouble here. He said i knew there was talk about the prosecutor. But i didnt know it had anything to do with the bidens. That was doubtful. This testimony blows that out of the water. In the debriefing vindman says sondland emphasized the importance of ukraine investigating bidens. And told him it was inappropriate. Why is that so important . Yeah. So i think its consistency aspect. Vind land talks about outside influencers. The giuliani and pushing the bidens. Taylor talks about an irregular diplomat lane. You can call it outside influence irregular. Both of them have set up a reality in which the professionals are trying to support ukraine with the bipartisan effort. And theres this thing going on around them they cant control. It has access to the president. That gets to the point of how should we think ant vindman. At this stage we admit that were smoking at this stage and whats important about each of the witnesses they are corroborating each other now. Very specifically. About a quid pro quo about a dereliction ov duty by the president of the United States. About the use of Foreign Government. To influence an american election. And then about abusing and using ukraine a country that was struggling that needed our help against russia. So just putting those together im done looking for a smoking gun. Im looking at all the consistent smoke. And vindman is another piece. Were just smoking now. All right. I dont know what else. This is not smoking. Im nervous at this stage. The people who deny theres evidence of impeachable offense. They are smoking something. Exactly. Thank you all. This isnt a vape this is smoke. Well leave it there. His testimony tomorrow could be a huge turning point. Will republicans be able to dismiss testimony from a decorated war hero . Sure. Sometimes i wish i had legs like you. Yeah, like a regular person. No. Still half bike half man, just the opposite. Oh, so the legs on the bottom and motorcycle on the top . Yeah. Yeah, i could see that. For those who were born to ride, theres progressive. Yeah, i could see that. Sleep this amazing . Thats a zzzquil pure zzzs sleep. Back with the breaking news huge testimony expected in the impeachment inquiry tomorrow. White house ukraine expert lieutenant vind man plans to tell he was so troubled by the july phone call with ukraine president he reported concerns to a superior. Twice. Joining me now. So good to have you on. Thank you so much. Lets bring you in here first, i want to read part of the Opening Statement. And compare to sondland. This is vindman about the july 10 meeting between administration and ukraine officials. Ambassador sondland started to speak about ukraine delivering specific investigations in order to secure the meeting with the president. At dh time boaten cut the meeting short. There was a scheduled debriefing during which ambassador sdand emphasized. The bidens. I stated to ambassador sondland that his statements were inappropriate. That the request to investigate biden and the son had nothing to do with National Security. And that such investigations were not something the ncs was going to get involved in or push. Dr. Hill entered the room and asserted his statements were inappropriate. And sondland testimony about that same meeting goes like this. But if ambassador bolton or hills or other harbor any misgivings about what we were doing they never shared those with me. Then or later. These two statements are opposed. Someone is not telling the truth. What a tangled web we weave. Remember the idea theyre so opposed, so is the policy that was aspoused by the administration with respect to the military aid to ukraine and what happened in this discussion. Thats why this person felt compelled to come forward. There was more than one adult in the room. Hes already said hes not the whistleblower. Who made the under lying complaint that launched the thousand ships here. He is somebody that confronted the issue and addressed it. With more than one superior. Put people on notice in realtime. And it progressed. One thing that was laudable about the statement. Is is he an active duty career military official which means coming forward in defiance of the white house not to show up and already an issue for him. Also he was concerned about the impact of a partisan appearance for ukraine. On the ability to get bipartisan military aid in the future. Even then he was a patriot. Thinking about what would the impact be on ukraine. Which is vulnerable to the extraordinary amount of leverage. Sondland claims his testimony that he didnt know the prosecutor stood for the bidens until after august. Of 2019. Heres what he says. Giuliani did mention the name, in august i understood that he was one of many examples of the Ukraine Companies run by oligarchs and lacking structures. I didnt know until more recent press reports that biden was on the board. Again i recall no discussions with any state department or white house official about former Vice President biden or his son. Nor do i recall taking part in any effort to encourage an investigation into the bidens. So, house investigators dont you think theyll want to talk to sondland again . Hes regretting that 1 million contribution he gave to trump that made him the ambassador. Hes going to brush up with his lawyer and make amendments to his official testimony. He will be under perjury. He has three people that destroyed his narrative. Hill, ambassador taylor. In his 15 page Opening Statement. I recommend everyone read. It tells you why people serve the country. He served for 50 years and cares about the National Security of ukraine and United States and ukrainians who lost thousands of lives thanks to russian invasion. And also now you have tomorrow. Lieutenant vind man a purple heart. Iraq war vet who will testify and corroborate the statements that he confronted ambassador sondland when he made the statements alleging the quid pro quo. They have trump dead to rights. Its smoking its going to smoke. Theres a fire. And trump is going to burn it all down because republicans cannot argue the facts on this. They attack the process. Attack the institution. And i made a prediction on twitter there theyll attack vindman because theres no bottom. And he was attacked as a double agent. Vindman says in Opening Statement hes not the whistleblower. Thats zusuggests how many peop were alarmed. It wasnt just the whistleblower. There were more people. This awareness that this administration was admitting crimes and covering them up. This whole idea that it was a perfect call, that nobody indicated to trump otherwise. That nothing was wrong. Its bogus. Clearly there were people in the room, people on the call who were aware of the great inappropriateness of what was going on. Not only in that call of course. But in all of the other demands that had been made of ukrainian officials. Not to mention of course of chinese officials. And yet were only hearing about this now. It suggests there were a lot of people complicit. Very high up. Not just trump. Not just the people on the call. But you have to imagine some of the other very senior leaders. Mulvaney. Pence. Had to have known. Some of these concerns even if people werent in the room had to have been raised. With people very highest level of the government. Its not just about trump. Make that clear. Its not just about trump. If it were only about trump if there were if it were about trump, our democracy wouldnt be as risk. The reason why is there were so many other people who were complicit. Wow. Thank you all. I appreciate it. The president booed at the world series the crowd chanting something that might have sounded familiar. Well discuss. President trump may not have expected the crowds reaction at the world series when he was shown on the big screen. At nationals parable. Park. So lets discuss now. Ana navarro is here. Alice stewart as well. Good evening. Someone argued even if you dont support trump, you should always respect the office. Of the president. And chanting lock him up was inappropriate. What do you think . Yeah, i afwree that the office is something that should be respected even if you dont like the president. And i dont think saying lock her up or him up is acceptable. Whether its the president saying that about clinton or the fans at the game saying that about the president. Its just not appropriate to say about a political adversary. It was what it is. Its the environment were in and unfortunately this has become common place. I think the president clearly expect ld the crowd to boo him. He handled it in stride. He and everyone in his booth took it with a grain of salt. That is the great thing about america. Baseball, hot dogs and apple pie. Free dm of speech. The lock her up chant about Hillary Clinton is a common fixture at rallies. He laughs about it and encourages it. Is lock him up an acceptable way to opportunity a president under multiple investigations or should americans hold themselves to a higher standard even if the president doesnt. It is in america. Democracy in action is american freedom. The freedom of speech and express yourself. Theres to so many countries. North korea, cuba, venezuela. Something like that could get you in jail at best or killed. And here in america it can happen. Listen, you reap what you sow. This is a chant that was dhamponned and started by trump and his sporters. Something he han doing consistently for four years now. He beat clinton. She is selling books. He is still leading lock her up chants against her. I think its it came back to bite him. It came back to haunt him. Something that he had started and i think alice is right, it is a sign of the times. And as unpopular as other president s have been at times like george w. Bush during the war for example. I dont remember these kinds of chants during baseball games. And you know what was another only in america moment . That a proud immigrant a man who was sued by donald trump for refusing to be part of his hotel. For refusing to have a restaurant at his hoe nel washington. Was the one throwing out the first pitch. Thats an only in america moment. He was also a great humanitarian. His world central kitchen is you tweeted about that. Washington nationals allowing an imfwrant to throw out the first pitch. He everyone thanked the Washington Nationals sgr we have seen him a couple days before. And hes a great friend of mine. And he is so proud. To be an american. And h also such before i run o time. I think she makes a great point to celebrate the chef. Who is a wonderful chef but tuz so much great humanitarian work and charity work. Also gone without saying that at the time the cameras went to the president he was sitting there and tributing honored veterans. And that got lost in this. I watched that video. When the wounded veterans came on. Everybody cheered. Every person cheered. And it went back to the vets it was the veterans and the president. Cheers for the veterans boos for him and back to the veterans and cheers again. They werent being disrespectful to the veterans. In the hoping of the show, you can feel however you want to feel about this. Whether its appropriate or not. He put it out there. And as put it out there and thi where we are. I have to run. President trump speaking in chicago today at the International Association of chiefs of police. Skipped his speech saying the values of the people of chicago will more important than anything he would have to say. And the president was not happy about it. There is one person thats not here today. Were in chicago. I said where is he i want to talk to him. In fact. More than anyone else. This person should be here because maybe he could learn something. Thats the superintendent of Chicago Police. Eddy johnson. So the president continued to go after the superintendent as well as the city of chicago once again comparing it to a war zone. Embarrassing to us as a nation all over the world theyre talking about chicago. Afghanistan is the safe place by comparison. Its true. Wow. Superintendent johnson responded to the words shortly after wards. This president is known for doing a lot of talking about the city of chicago. If hes truly ready to roll up his sleeves to partner with us so are we. Slojs that partnership reflects who we are as chicagoens. The National Narrative that chicago is city on fire is just simply not true. We have our challenges on the south and west side. I want to remind people we have 17 neighborhoods in this city that are safer than manhattan and l. A. With e me now to discuss. Chicago columnist. And Law Enforcement that was the president of the United States. Saying that. Think about that. Let me give you facts. Go ahead. Hes had a long hate affair with chicago and it dates back to the previous president of the United States. Obama. Because of his dislike for obama and everything about obama including his hometown is something that will thot be on his list. Facts. According to Chicago Police since 2016 the number of murders in chicago has been steady declining and declines in crimes like robbery, burglary, aggravated battery. At the same time theres no doubt that chicago has an incredibly serious gun violence problem. The chief eluded to that. Why attack his own citizens . He represents chicago too. You know, he sees chicago we are all americans. But his base are leery of people who live in chicago. People of color. Immigrants. This is a sanctuary city. The president is spent his entire presidency beats up on People Like Us and sees it a way of giving himself advantage. The other issue is the police. He sees policing and police as his friends and you saw he got a receptive audience. This is an opportunity to shore up the base and engage in a lot of race baiting. Why do you say that . I say that because hes be relentless about attacking people of color. Attacking cities lig chicago. Full of people of color. Attacking immigrants and the big question i want to ask him today is what are you going to do to help us . You can attack and criticize but you have all the resources in the world in the federal government and havent offered significant help to chicago. Rather than what have you got to lose . Remember that statement. The president attacked the superintendent local politicians and suggesting that the crime problem could be solved quickly. If it werent for the policies regarding issues like undocumented immigrants and on and on. Similar to her answer. What is your reaction . Its just not that simple. Obviously. Clearly he doesnt know superintendent johnson. He doesnt know chicago. I know both. Eddy johnson is one of the most respected leaders in policing today. Hes done a good job as it was mentioned earlier crime is on the decline. No one is happy about where we are. Obviously you have to continue to push the numbers down. As far as chicago goes, im a native chicagoen. Third generation. Born and raised in this city. The people who live here to people who work here simply do not deserve to be held up to ridicule like the president just did. This is one of the greatest cities in america. And as she said, were all americans. The president s job is to help where ever he sees a need for help. Rather than just criticize. Elected officials here in the United States of the america. If superintendent chose not to attend the event he chose not to atten. We dont bow before elected officials in this country. And so i dont get the fact that we have a president who feels free to just openly criticize and rid dual his citizens. It makes no sense. Before i leave, i want to put this up. Chicago mayor responded to the president on twitter calling the performance ignorant. And writing luckily in the city we know the truth and will not let anyone no matter how high the office denigrate who we are as a people or status as a welcoming city. Thank you both. La la la la la joe biden slamming President Trump saying the successful military strike on isis leader Abu Bakr Albaghdadi happened quote despite his ineptitude about commander in chief. Thats not all hes saying about the president. Hes an idiot. On terms of saying that. Everybody knows this. You want to deal with corruption . Start to act like it. Release tax returns or shut up sfwl wow. Joins me now to discuss. Also matt louis. That was he said how he feels sfwl subtle. Over due. Good evening. Ill start with you. What do you think is behind his ramped up attacks against President Trump and is it working for him . Well, yeah. He had a good day. You cant theres not been a day in the campaign where you said joe biden knocked it out of the park today. What a great speech or debate. That might be the closest hes come to having a really moment. I think he need to do more of it. The knock on joe biden as he lost a step. Maybe hes not as exciting as Elizabeth Warren or sanders. Hes not telling it like it is. He can fix that by having energy and going after trump. Its a good start. Yeah. Biden also jabbed trump over his claim that afghanistan was safer than chicago. Tweeting this. If President Trump had ever visited our troops serving in afghanistan he would know this isnt true. Wow. Hes giving it as good as he gets. Apparently they must have focus group this and told him he better start jabbing back or hell lose the primary. This is the joe biden that people want to see. He prides himself on being middle class joe. Joe from pennsylvania. Scrappy, he can take on trump. And theres a sweet spot that joe biden can fill where he n u he can still maintain his statesmanship, he can still maintain he was the Vice President for eight years and remind people hes ready on day one. But people also need the bully to get smacked in the mouth every once in a while, and thats what joe biden i think is finally starting to do. The line about, you know, this whole corruption deal, you know, then release your taxes or shut up. He should have said that weeks ago as donald trump and his minions were going after biden and his son unfairly and inaccurately about corruption. They should have nipped that in the bud right away. I call it the eightmile strategy. He should have done what eminem did at the end of eight mile where he went after papa doc and listed all the thinks he was going to say in the rap battle and then tell me something we dont already know. Thats how joe biden should have handled this situation with trump and he hasnt done it yet. Im glad to see hes finally starting to do it now. Olivia, your piece is titled the Zombie Campaign joe biden is the least foremidable frontrunner ever. Will it matter . You write that you heard from one of bidens Senior Campaign advisers. It says, theres such reverence for getting to work with the Vice President , that i think for some of these folks, theres a mentality of how could we possibly lose . Hes who he is. I dont think they see that thats not all its gonna take. Okay. So do you think biden the Biden Campaign is cleareyed on what it will take to beat trump . Is this all new strategy that theyre doing now . I think some people internally are. I think others are not. Joe biden, based on my reporting, understands that things have not been going well, would like things to change. But its not clear that there are the right people around him that can tell him what he needs to change and can be honest with him, and in that way hes a little bit like the president. I think what joe biden has wanted this entire time has been a direct fight with donald trump, and thats why it was perplexing when he delayed his response to the whistleblowers story and to all this. But he was saying release your tax returns or shut up during his speech in New Hampshire a few weeks ago, when he first called for impeachment. But he came well after Elizabeth Warren had called for impeachment. He seemed to be kind of late to his own party in some respect. I think that contributes to this narrative that he is not quite e agele, not quite sharp enough. If he keeps performing like he did on that interview with norah odonnell, i think things will perhaps clhange in his favor. Tara, hes leading in the polls. You and i have talked about the trump effect with him, that his supporters dont really care. But the polls have been consistent since he entered even though it was pretty late. Cnns latest polling shows him at 15 ahead of his next challenger, which is senator Elizabeth Warren, ten points higher than it was in early september. Is this exactly where any candidate wants to be right now, you think . Well, yes and no. I mean that was a great poll for joe biden and for those of us who are rooting for him. We were like thank god because he was losing momentum to Elizabeth Warren. But we also have to remember that we dont have a national election. How hes polling in the early states makes a huge difference, and the first three states, hes not polling as well as he is in south carolina, where he has an overwhelming lead. Thats because he has consolidated his nonwhite voter support, which is hugely important in a democratic primary. So he has got to kind of bring that momentum back, and his campaign has got to start putting him in the situations where he flourishes. Olivia, you did an amazing piece on joe biden, and one of the thank you. One of his strong points is his ability to connect with people, his story, and his realness, and people need to see more of that from him. So i hope the campaign is watching and they continue to put him in those circumstances, especially with his wife, because shes an asset too. Matt, let me bring you back in here because biden polls significantly higher than any candidate with nonwhite voters. But hes also a draw for white workingclass voters, a group that trump flipped from obama. Taking a more rough and tumble approach the way to appeal to them, you think . Yeah. I think that it works for everybody actually. I think that just joe biden has been ambling to the white house, right . Hes slouching toward pennsylvania avenue. Hes winning every day, but its not its not exactly vigorous. He does need to step it up. I think that a more aggressive, within reason, a more aggressive, energetic joe biden is a win win. I think he can win with workingclass whites and with minorities. I dont think anybody could do better with either group. Whatever your strategy is, the Obama Coalition or win back some of those workingclass voters from trump, either way biden seems to be your best bet. All right. Thanks, everyone. Appreciate it. See you next time. Thank you. Thanks, don. Thanks for watching. Our coverage continues. Born to be wild. Dad dad can you drive me to jessicas house . At northwestern mutual, this is what our version of Financial Planning looks like. Tomorrow is important, but so is making the most of the house before theyre out of the house. Spend your life living. Find an advisor at northwesternmutual. Com. Good evening. We start with breaking news tonight. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi this afternoon announced the impeachment inquiry is about to enter a new, more public phase trying to at least in part undercut a key republican talking point in the process. The speaker informed her colleagues in a letter that the house will hold a vote on thursday on rules that establish the rights of the public to see the information collected from witnesses during closeddoor testimony and how that information will be transferred to the Judiciary Committee which is responsible for recommending articles of impeachment. It will also establish the rights of the president and his counsel as the Lower Chamber heads toward a final impeachment vote. Much of her letter was not about the process ahead, it was th
