And this assault on the truth is a bad thing for our democracy or any democracy. Well, it started officially as the administration but started long before with donald trump and his whole, you know, Conspiracy Theory about the former president , the lie about where he was born. I mean thats probably the origin of it, you know, when it comes to politics. In his businesses it goes back much longer than that reported. Mr. Clapper, let me just ask you about what Mick Mulvaney said live from the briefing room. I want to play it. To be clear you just described a quid pro quo. It is funding will not flow unless an investigation into the democratic server happened as well. We do that all the time with Foreign Policy. And i have news for everybody, get over it. And this business of trying to impose another alternative reality, alternative facts and then of course to acknowledge it and then have to turn around and walk it back is this is what happens when you get when youre drowning in a sea of lies. And as you call it the truth decay, this truth problem extends to what we heard from the president on syria. Watch this. The kurds are very happy. Turkey is very happy. The United States is very happy. And you know what, civilization is very happy. Its a great thing for civilization. I mean, what on earth is he talking about . Hes pumping himself up, claiming the kurds are happy and this is great day for civilization when it was his rash decision that got us here, a place where turkey is getting everything it wants. Well, this is frankly whats disturbing about President Trump is he has this own reality bubble which bears little resemblance to ground truth. And this was a horrible, reckless, irresponsible and ignorant decision. And with predictable results. And erdogan has played President Trump in the same manner that kim jongun is playing President Trump and trump thinks, you know, hes on top of the world and its just the opposite. Lets talk about general mattis who was at the annual announcement dinner tonight, a funny event. But here he is with a quote from lincoln. Watch this. No, lincoln went on, it was not the press we must fear, it was corrosion from within, the rot, the viciousness, the lassitude, the ignorance. Anarchy is one potential consequence of all this. Knowing jim as i do i thought unlike in previous segments i thought this was a very significant coming out for jim mattis. The occasion called for humor, and i thought he, you know, threw some real jabs at President Trump. And a serious comment, the lincoln quote was clearly directed towards the Current Situation we find ourselves in as a country and specifically at the present. So i thought this was a very significant event, and i think were probably going to hear a lot more from jim mattis. If you thought this was the best venue because listen you know him better than all of us, knowing him as you do, do you think that this was the right venue, that its significant he did it this way and with humor . Yeah, well, if it was natural fit for him. I think he felt comfortable doing it this way. Now, people might take issue with it, that he hasnt come out with some bold statement before. But i think this is hes kind of putting his toe in the public water so to speak. And i think it was done in a venue that he was comfortable making the points the way he made them. Again, i for my part, me personally speaking i thought it was pretty significant. Its interesting at the white house Correspondence Dinner when president obama criticized him, donald trump jokingly, many have said it led him to run for president , and thats part of this disdain for this president. So i mean, look, theyre related. And also the other point is theres no indication that the Justice Department is investigating what happened to the server. The fbi knows exactly what happened in terms of the russian hack. Theyve confirmed it multiple times, the cia, it Intelligence Community confirmed it. This whole idea this is needed as part of a Justice Department conversation just doesnt hold. Were hogging the conversation. Susan, you say this is moment of truth for republicans. Explain why you see it that way. I think it is. I think the way to understand what happened today was that this was a fullon confession and Mick Mulvaney accidently told the truth. And so really this is a moment for republicans to decide whether or not this is tolerable or acceptable. Essentially what the white house has acknowledged here is the absolute worst manifestation of facts, an actual quid pro quo involving the holding of congressionally authorized military aid, you know, to a partner, to sort of stave off russian adepression in exchange for potentially favors to the president of the United States. This is the same thing republicans have spent the past few weeks saying that would be terrible if that happened but it did want happen in this case. I think this is dare from the white house of telling republicans were not going to really deny this. Were going to go on record saying thats exactly what happened and in the words of Mick Mulvaney, get over it. I think this is moment if republicans have to decide whether or not they want to stand for basic fundamental foundational principles in the United States. You know, what their oath of office means or whether or not they think its acceptable to allow the president to continue to get away with this type of behavior. I wonder though if it was a trial balloon to say well see how this flies and then youre shaking your head. Did you think that, too . To some extent. Meaning how it goes over with the public, lands with the media or public and then well go from there. Number one, either admit it and see how it lapds winds with public. This is Something Congress and Congressional Republicans ought to be up in arms about. The president has in effect and admitted to it today usurping their authority. They decided how theyre going to spend money on foreign aid and the president in effect decided theyre not going to do so. Why republicans are not taking the pitchforks right now to the president of the United States for sulting them as a branch of government is beyond all of us. This is just not how the branches of government ought to be interacting and republicans are failing in their core duty. So mulvaney was trying to make this distinction like i said before between cooperating with a Justice Department investigation and the biden thing. The biden thing, theres no conceivable excuse for the president s comments asking for that. They can possibly construct an excuse for cooperating with the u Justice Department investigation if there really is a Justice Department investigation into the ukrainian server. This is violation of the emoluments clause of the constitution which specifically provides that a perp oholding a position of trust in the United States government cannot hold any benefits from foreign governments. And weve had him violating the emoluments clause since day one and now hes going out and openly asking foreign governments to subsidize his resorts in connection with the g7. Hes got his hand out to foreign governments. And if this Congress Puts up with that they are to blame as well. And think about, david, the hypocrisy of all this saying well it doesnt look right, hunter biden was on a board and he was on a board when his dad was doing business in ukraine, so it doesnt look right. And then you have this happening and the former chief of staff said that the president wont profit from this or i should say the acting chief of staff mulvaney says the president wont profit from it at all. Listen to this and then you can answer. Hes not making any money of this just like hes not making any money working here. If you think this is going to help his brand, thats great. But i would suggest he doesnt need any help with his brand. Was that the Perfect Place . In fact, i understand the folks who participated in it hated it and thought it was a miserable place to have to g7. And whos going to pay for that . And overall in 2015 to 2017 the clubs revenue fell to an 18 drop. And again this is report from the Washington Post from may 15th this year. Lets listen. I do stand before as was noted here really having achieved greatness. I mean im not just an overrated general, i am the greatest, the worlds most overrated. And its in no small part i would tell you i owe new york. I owe new york for this because senator schumer have i thanked you for bringing my name up in a rather contentious meet in washington, so i would tell you, too, im honored to be considered that by donald trump because he also called meryl streep an overrated actress. So i guess im the meryl streep of generals and frankly that sounds pretty good to me. And you do have to admit between me and meryl, at least weve had some victories. And some of you were kind in the reception and asked me, you know, if this bothered me to have been rated this way based on what donald trump said, of course not. I earned my spurs on the battlefield, martin, as you pointed out. And donald trump earned his spurs in a letter from a doctor. So im not in the least bit put out by it. And i think the person in the military mr. Trump doesnt think is overrated is who you pointed out, martin, thats colonel sanders. But none of this can diminish the honor i feel tonight of being among all of you in this Great American city. I started working in washington, d. C. And i realized how easy i had it overseas in a combat zone. Now, this wont be news to everyone in this room but were going through a tough highly partisan time here in cur country. And ive never been much for partisanship. The greatinize of our country lies in teamwork. And my record on bipartisanship is clear. After all ive reportedly been fired by president s of both parties. I will stand on that record. As many of you know donald trump nicknamed me mad dog, but these days ive turned over a kinder je gentler leaf and i like to think of myself as less of a mad dog and more of an emotional support animal. In Springfield Lincoln invoked biblical language to describe how the power of this common spirit protects our nation. He said it truly as has been said of the greatest institution, the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. David, good evening to you. So our guests tonight have been divided on general mattis taking on President Trump in this way and in this setting. What do you think . So im kind of mixed on it, don. On the one hand there was that line right there at the end where he said, you know, he referred to our kurdish allies, there was a clear statement that he has a general, as a former secretary of defense sees the kurds as our special operators, brothers in arms and its a comment on whats going on right now with our troops pullic back and with turkey, a formernateo ally but a country working against our interests in the middle east attacking those brothers in arms. On the other hand, i thought a lot of that was platitudes. General mattis is in a position where he could speak out and tell the American People what he really thinks about President Trumps performance in office, some of his inability to take advice from generals, other leaders. And its obviously a light occasion, hes supposed to be telling jokes but i dont think hes taken this moment to really say what he thinks. Do you think this opens the door for further critiques . Up to now he has really said his Resignation Letter speaks for itself. He resigned around that time when President Trump first signaled he was going to pull out of syria and, you know, there were concerns about that policy leading us to sort of allow the resurgence of isis. And it was clear in that message that he didnt agree with that policy. But i dont think he has been full throated, again, about the fact that general excuse me, President Trump talks about loving the generals, listening to the generals, and at the same time he doesnt seem to listen to the general, Foreign Policy experts or really anybody in washington who understands the middle east. The nation is mourning the unexpected loss of congressman Elijah Cummings, the long time democrat from maryland. His office says he passed away early this morning in the hospital after suffering complications from longstanding health challenges. Cummings spent more than two decades in congress. Joining me now is his colleague congressman john lewis of georgia. Im so sorry for your loss. Are you doing okay . Im doing okay. Thank you so much. He was a towering figure, congressman. Talk to me about really about the loss his death leaves for the congress and for the country. We have lost a peaceful warrior for the American People. He was a man of peace, a man that sought justice. He never gave up. He never gave in. He kept the faith. And every day that he came to a Committee Meeting or came to the floor of the house to speak, he was speaking not just for the people of his district in maryland but he was speaking on behalf of the American People. Hes from the generation that you are of civil rights leaders like you, right . Can you tell us about how those roots, fighting for justice, how that shaped him and his lifes work . Well, his family came from south carolina, and they move said to baltimore seeking a better way, a better life. But he was grounded in the church. And i think he was deeply influenced by his attending church and listening to his mother and his father and wonderful preachers. And he could preach. He could inspire people to stand up. He would always say were better than that, were better than that. He saw goodness in all human beings. And it didnt matter whether you were black or white, latino, asianamerican or nativeamerican. He was just a good human being. I want to talk to you more about him. Started out practicing law, served 14 years in the maryland house of delegates and then in 1996 he was elected to congress in a special election with a message of unity. Listen to this. Our world would be a much better world and a much better place if we would only concentrate on the things we have in common instead of concentrating on our differences. Its easy to find differences, very easy. We need to take more time to find common ground. And so my mission is one that comes out of a vision that was created long, long ago. It is a mission and a vision to empower people. Im just going to piggyback what you said. His mission in washington was clear, empower people who might not have a voice and focus on what we have in common. I think its what he tried to do and tried to preach every single day during his service in the congress. He traveled around the nation trying to help people. He was passionate about what this country stands for. This is what he said earlier this year. When were dancing with the angels the question will be asked in 201 what did we do to make sure we kept our democracy intact . Did we stand on the side lines and say nothing . Congressman, everyone was riveted by that moment. He was so central to the matter before the country right now regarding impeachment. What path forward to you do you think he would want you to take or the congress to take or lawmakers in washington or the country to take . He would love to see us continue where he left off. To stand up, speak up, and speak out. Be bold, be courageous and find a way to make a way out of no way.
