It kicked off last night in miami with dueling democrats. The first batch of ten candidates sharing the stage. Things got heated at times, but it was mostly civil and driven by policy. Weve had the laws out there for a long time to be able to fight back. Whats been missing is courage. Pursue legislation so that women are paid equal pay for equal work in this country. When people come to this country they do not leave their human rights at the border. For too long our leaders have failed us, taking us from one regime change war to the next. We are supposed to break up big corporations when theyre not serving our democracy. We need to make sure everyone has a living wage. Ive called for a doubling of the earned income tax credit, raising the minimum wage and creating family leave. I think plans are great, but im a governor. We got to realize the people who brought us the weekend, unions, need to bring us a long overdue raise in america. We need an industrial policy saying were going to dominate building electric vehicles, theres going to be 30 million made in the next ten years. I want half of them made in the United States. Giant corporations have exactly one loyalty, and that is to profit. Donald trump is simply wrong. He says Wind Turbines cause cancer, we know they cause jobs. So, yes, im with bernie on medicare for all. Pharma thinks they own washington. Well, they dont own me. I dont believe only in reproductive freedom, i believe in reproductive justice. I just want to say theres three women up here who have fought pretty hard for a womans right to choose. So ill start with that. Watching that image of oscar and his daughter valeria is heartbreaking, it should also piss us all off. All the american citizens out there who feel youre falling behind, who feel the American Dream is not working for you, the immigrants didnt do that to you. We can do the things that are sensible. We can do the universal background checks. We can ban the weapons of war. But we can also double down on the research and find out what really works. The Mental Health counselor in every Single School in the United States. We need to Start Playing offense. If you need a license to drive a car, you should need a license to buy and own a firearm. Democratic party would stop acting like the party of the elites and be the party of the working people again and go in to states, including red states, to convince people were on their side we are the first generation to feel the sting of climate change, and we are the last that can do something about it. We are not connecting to the working class people in the very states that i represent in ohio, in the industrial midwest. Weve lost all connection. Leaders as disparate as president obama and President Trump have both said that they want to end u. S. Involvement in afghanistan. We must be engaged in this. We must have our state department engaged. We must have our military engaged to the extent they need to be, but the reality of it is, this president doesnt even have people appointed in the state department to deal with these things. As a soldier, i will tell you that answer is unacceptable. We have to bring our troops home. We must begin impeachment now so that we have the facts and the truth and we follow them as far as they go. This is not the number one issue the American People ask us about. Its not. They want to know what were going to do for health care. How were going to lower pharmaceutical prices. Create infrastructure. Perhaps the most explosive moment of the night was pitted was two texans pitted against each other. Julian castro and beto orourke clashing over immigration and the border crisis. Castro wants to decriminalize crossing that border, making it a civil offense instead of a crime. Thats a position orourke opposes. We would not build walls, we would not put kids in cages, we would spare no expense criminalize a lot of these families. Theyre been separated already. We will not criminally prosecute any family fleeing violence and persecution. Some of us on this stage have called to end that section, to terminate it. Some like congressman orourke have not. I want to challenge all of the candidates to do that. In fact i just think its a mistake, beto. I think its a mistake. Youre looking at one small part of this. Im talking about a comprehensive rewrite of our immigration laws. Thats not true. I dont think its asking too much for people to follow our laws when they come to this country. A lot of folks that are coming are not seeking asylum. A lot of them are undocumented immigrants, right . And you said recently that the reason you didnt want to repeal spandex 1325 was because you were concerned about Human Trafficking and drug trafficking. This is a known smuggler or drug trafficker. If you did your homework, you would know we they both have the same goal and that castro is misrepresenting his position. All right. Lets bring in cnn senior political analyst mark preston and ron brownstein. Senior editor for the atlantic. Thank you so much. Mark preston here in studio with us. Your takeaway. What was your surprise . Who came out in that field of ten . So a couple of things. One is i think the Biggest Surprise for me was the manufactured moments. Because these moments were not organic. They were certainly manufactured. They were rehearsed. We saw that with Julian Castro. I do think what we just saw right there, though, when it comes to moments, that exchange is the real debate that we saw. And thats the kind of debate that were going to see play out amongst these democrats, these 20plus democrats over the next few months as they try to position themselves and try to gain bigger ground on their competitors. Ron brownstein, you tweeted this. Bottom line on tonights debate, this is a stage with many more potential cabinet officers than potential president s who among these cabinet officers stepped up . Who to you won this night . Well, i think that is the big point. I think that, you know, we have a democratic race that is tiered to a kind of striking extent early on, and i dont think anything tonight really fundamentally changed that. With a little nuance around the edge. I thought that Julian Castro and cory booker probably did the most to help themselves from where they are. I thought Elizabeth Warren was steady as she goes. And was fine in terms of the primary. Though i think her unequivocally committing to the position of forcing people to give up private insurance and moving into a governmentrun system is a kind of longterm challenge and time bomb in her campaign if she gets to the general election. And i thought that beto orourke and Amy Klobuchar, from people who are kind of in the top grouping, really had a missed opportunity. I think they failed to more clearly delineate why they are in the race. And klobuchar in particular i think ducked the opportunity to differentiate herself from warren on some of the more liberal policies. The other five candidates i thought performed well, but really gave voters no reason to elevate them from the kind of a asterisk and 1 where they are now. Yeah, its warren who is in the heap of last night, right . Who needs to hold on to her position and not sort of mess up. Its interesting, in the beginning of the night it felt like warren it almost felt like the questions were geared toward her. Shes the one with all the policies so they kept asking all the questions. Lets listen to the first questions of the night. Listen to the sound. You have many plans. I do. Free college. Free childcare. Government health care. Cancellation of student debt. New taxes. New regulations. The breakup of major corporations. Some democrats want a margin signal individual tax rate of 70 on the very highest earners, those making more than 10 million a year. Would you support that . There is a debate right now in this party about the role of corporations, as you know. Senator warren in particular put out a plan to break up Tech Companies like facebook, amazon and google. You said we should not be running around pointing at companies and breaking them up with any kind of process. Why do you disagree . Senator warren, i mentioned you. Are you picking winners and losers . So the point of that, guys, and mark preston in particular, is that it seemed early on at least that Elizabeth Warren dominated without even dominating. She even dominated the questions by the questions that were asked. Right. She had the advantage because she was considered the frontrunner on this stage last night, right . So tonight were going to run into four potential frontrunners. Of course joe biden is the frontrunner because hes so far ahead. As we look at the second tier of folks, this is the night that youre looking at. The bernie sanders, the Kamala Harris, the pete buttigieg, you know, even when you get into the kirsten gillibrand, its just a stronger stage tonight. I do think thats for sure. Ron, jimmy fallon actually sang his advice to the Democratic Candidates and it was dont become a meme, and i got to tell you who failed to follow that advice. It was beto orourke in what is the viral moment thus far of the debate season. Lets watch. Some democrats want a marginal individual tax rate of 70 on the very highest earners, those making more than 10 million a year. Would you support that . Its going to take all of us coming together to make sure that it does. [ speaking spanish ] que . What happened there. Why . Did he help himself with that . Well, look, i think in general it was a striking moment how many of the democrats. Yeah. You know, spoke spanish tonight and reflecting kind of the changing of their coalition and the changing of america, but in betos case, beto orourkes case, i mean, i think it felt a little kind of forced and even precious. And kind of, you know, knit in with kind of the larger questions he has faced since entering the race about just seeming just a little too much on the kind of earnest change. I did not think he had a good night. I dont think he kind of, you know, articulated he did talk about kind of changing politics from the bottom up, but he didnt really kind of assert himself into the front here. I thought klobuchar also really missed an opportunity as someone, you know, she let john delaney, who is on the far end of the stage and at 1 caring the case against a singlepayer Health Care System and kind of mumbled her opposition to it without making that clear. Cory booker chose not to differentiate with Elizabeth Warren on antitrust policy. That was striking i think mark would agree, that candidates who have had differences with her in the past did not choose to highlight them tonight and kind of allowed some of the more liberal positions to, you know, basically go unchallenged. Can we listen cory booker also spoke spanish last night. Can we just listen to the samantha bee, the comedian, said, well, when your friend comes back from study abroad, demdebate. Lets listen to some of the other spanish last night. [ speaking spanish ] [ speaking spanish ] [ speaking spanish ] i do not have the qualifications to say whether that was great spanish or okay spanish. Mark preston, politically what does it achieve . Well, a couple of things. One, it was striking that we did see three candidates come out and spoke spanish, or at least some spanish. However, it seemed forced to me. I mean, i do agree with ron. I think it was forced on all of them. They were trying to make a connection. Again, this is a manufactured moment. How can you not be forced when you have ten people on the stage and a minute . You know what i mean . In a way, set up so many candidates. Right. Theres one thing to have an organic moment when its on the fly and you can see it or its canned. All this stuff was canned. Cory booker looked down on his piece of paper as he was saying it. Clearly they were planning for this, as was beto. Can i just say one quick point on that. Sure, ron. Yes, it was canned and kind of forced to put it in, but it is indicative of a real difference that is going to matter over the next year and a half, which is that you have a Democratic Party which is really putting a lot of chips on embracing the changing america and you have a president in donald trump who is defining the Republican Party in a whole series of ways in hostility to the ways that america are changing. Who proposed the largest cuts in Legal Immigration since the 1920s and Everything Else we are seeing in terms of the hardline policies at the border. So, i mean, it was kind of artificial and so forth, but it is indicative of Something Real in the way the parties are realigning around the issue of how america is changing itself in the 21st century. Its something thats going to be a very important part of the general election. Okay. Team no sleep, we appreciate you being here. 3 15 a. M. Thanks, mark. Eastern time. President trump in the air on his way to the g20 in osaka, japan. At a refueling stop in alaska, he greeted the troops. And heres what he said about the democratic debate. So we have a big debate going on. Just started. And i had my choice between you and them. And i chose you. Youre smarter. Youre smarter than they are and better looking. Youre smarter and better looking. The president s oneword take on the policydriven debate, boring. That was it as far as the twitter debate at this moment. Nic robertson live for us in osaka, japan. Nic, good morning to you. What should we look for today at the g20 . Reporter you know, i think President Trumps going to get a taste of what is going to get across the whole of this g20, which is as weve seen before, you know, a fairly hostile crowd to what they view as his America First protectionism. They, of course, believe in multilateralism, free trade. There is already that contest of wills. This evening shortly after he lands, President Trump will have dinner with the australian Prime Minister where were expecting the australian Prime Minister to dial back on his trade war with china because of the concerns about a global recession. Thats going to be a message undoubtedly repeated many times. We will have to wait until saturday, however, for President Trump to have that allimportant meeting with xi jinping, the chinese leader, but before he gets there hes going to be sitting down with Prime Minister abe of japan, who is the host here, who is trying to sort of push a deescalation of tensions between the United States and iran. Even on that here President Trump is quite isolated. Hell meet President Trump will immediate as well with the indian Prime Minister, mowedy, the german chancellor merkel. President putin, trump has said its not clear if hes actually going to talk to president putin about not meddling in the president ial elections next year. But as i say, assert, the big meeting with xi jinping. Is the trade war going on . Is the president going to double down . Or will he put a pause on it as he did at the last g20 . A massively consequential week for the president. Nic robertson live for us at the g20, thank you, sir. U. S. Asylum officers slamming President Trumps policy of forcing migrants to remain in mexico while they await immigration hearings. On wednesday they urged a federal Appeals Court to block the administration from continuing the program. The officers say its threatening the lives of migrants and fundamentally contrary to the moral fabric of our nation. The world still reacting to this heartbreaking image of a father and daughter drowned in the banks of the rio grande. Her arm around her father as they took their last breaths. They had waited two months hoping to receive political asylum in the u. S. Earlier this year, a lower court blocked the remain in mexico policy, but the ninth circuit has allowed it to continue, pending appeal. That horrific photo of the dead father and daughter giving new urgency to lawmakers who move to approve billions of dollars in emergency spending. On wednesday, the Senate Overwhelmingly approved a 4. 6 billion emergency aid bill to help care for migrants detained by the u. S. After crossing the border. The Senate Passing its border aid measure after rejecting the version passed by the house a day earlier. Senate Republican Leaders do not appear to be willing to negotiate over differences with the house. President trump has indicated he supports the senate bill. All right. Public concern about the nations border policy is growing and bank of america is making its position known, announcing it will no longer do business with companies that run Detention Centers at the state and federal levels. Bank of america declined to comment about which companies it has previously worked with after backlash from its employees, wayfair, said it would donate 1 100,000 to the red cross and donate profits of the sale of Broom Furniture to a migrant facility. As you know, employees walked out of wayfairs headquarter wednesday, they were protesting the fact that their company was providing furniture, selling furniture to a detention facility, providing the beds. Wayfair did not say where the funds for the donation would come from and declined cnns request for comment. Clearly employees, two very different companies, a bank and an online retailer, clearly hearing from their employees that they dont want any kind of business being done with the people who profit from these Detention Centers. Employees being heard. As we are in the Summer Travel season, major news. A new flaw discovered in the boeing 737 max. Could that have tilted the planes downward in the two deadly crashes . Im christine romans. It is 34 minutes past the hour. The 2020 president ial debate season now officially here. It kicked off last night in miami with dueling democrats. The first batch of ten candidates sharing the stage. Things heated at times but it was mostly civil and driven by policy. Lets bring back ron brownstein, cnn senior political analyst and Senior Editor for the atlantic. Hey, ron. A lot of folks in the morning analysis is that Elizabeth Warren needed to survive and managed to hold on especially in the first half of the debate. She seemed to command the stage. Then you had these breakaway performances by cory booker and by Julian Castro. Do you sort of agree with that analysis this morning . I do. By the way, just slightly differ. This is still the night of for me. Its not the morning after. So were kind of like in that you know, its interesting, i thought the other candidates chose not to engage Elizabeth Warren. I mean, she kind of ran in her own lane. She delivered kind of diced up versions of her stump speech on her major policy ideas. And when even prompted to challenge her, Amy Klobuchar chose not to do that on really directly on medicare for all or the free college. Only kind of obliquely. And cory booker chose not to on kind of breaking up Big Technology companies. It was really left to john delaney to make the case against the medicare for all. I do think the fact that she embraced so unequivocally the idea that everyone with private health insurance, 180 million people, are going to have to give it up and move into a governmentrun system is something that we have not heard the last of that tonight. Certainly if he makes it to the general election and the primaries. Beyond that, i agree the night was fine for her and castro and booker probably did the most to help themselves. I thought klobuchar and beto orourke probably had the biggest missed opportunity, and for the remaining five, they started in the asterisk 0, 1 , 2 range. Although some of them performed incredibly, i dont see anything that would move them out of that. The health care moment was interesting. Lester holt did a show of hands. Elementary school for a moment. Who would abolish private health care. There are ways to quantify all of this from the first night. Google trends says cory booker had the most google searches during this debate. The other way to quantify it is simply who said the most. That was easily the same answer. Cory booker talked for ten minutes 55 seconds. More than twice as much as jiay inslee and basically twice as much as bill de blasio as well. Cory booker said the most. Did he make the most of those words, though . Well it was interesting. It was kind of a tale of two debates. The first half warren was kind of the central focus. As we said, particularly, they kept asking her more questions. Right. Than the others. In the second half, i thought cory booker picked up a lot of strength. He has been an undervalued stock in this race. Its been a mystery to people why he hasnt struck more of a chord. Hes a dynamic orator. He has a lot of energy. He hasnt really emerged. Well see if this is enough. You would think this performance would get him a second look. And perhaps also castro to some extend a second look from voters. But there is a lot there is a long way to go for these candidates who are kind of trailing in the polls. In part because all of them have somebody in front of them and the lane they want to occupy. You know, if cory booker is going to become a first tier candidate, hes going to have to consolidate a lot of africanamerican support. Hes already got Kamala Harris a few steps ahead of him on that. Same thing with klobuchar. If shes going to make it into the top tier, shes got to consolidate a lot of blue collar older white support. Shes got a guy named joe biden ahead of her in that line that were going to see tonight. The breakaway performances from last night or tonight, depending how long youve been up. Few hours ago. They have today to capitalize on that. In 24 hours were going to be talking about another field of ten and the breakaway moments and who won and who advanced. There was a question asked last night that each candidate had a chance to answer. I think its sort of revealing of the world view of all of these candidates. The greatest geopolitical threat to the United States. Listen. Yeah. The greatest geopolitical threat to the United States right now. Congressman delaney . Well, the biggest geopolitical challenge is china. The biggest geopolitical threat remains nuclear weapons. Okay. So those are i got you. Different questions. Totally get it. Go ahead, governor inslee. The biggest threat to the security of the United States is donald trump. Theres no question. Congresswoman gabbert . The greatest greatest geopolitical threat. The great threat that we face is the fact were at a greater risk of nuclear war today than ever before in history. Two threats. Economic threat, china. But our major threat right now is whats going on in the middle east with iran if we dont get our act together. Try to keep it to one. Slimmer than what weve been going here. Our existential threat is climate change. We have to confront it before its too late. Senator warren . Climate change. Senator booker. Nuclear proliferation and climate change. Secretary castro . China and climate change. Congressman ryan . China without a question. Theyre wiping us around the world economically. And mr. Mayor . Russia. Because theyre trying to undermine our democracy and theyve been doing a pretty damn good job of it and we need to stop them. The china answer actually was interesting to me. That might be add odds what joe biden, the frontrunner tonight, is going to say when he is asked this question, ron. I was surprised more people didnt Say Something along the lines of what governor illnensl did. The democratic nominee is going to say the biggest threat to americas position in the world is Donald Trumps posture of alienating allies and coddling dictators. Nobody really went near that direction in trying to make the case against the president. Dont forget, youre basically calling on the American People to fire someone from their job. Making that case is really job one all of the time for the democratic nominee. Other than that, emphasis on climate really is striking, as a geopolitical threat. As was how Many Democrats basically echoed the trumpian argument that we are now in a position of strategic competition with china as opposed to what both obama and even bush and certainly clinton tried to manage a more nuanced relationship. Interesting. All right. Ron brownstein, thank you so much. In colorado for us tonight. Thanks, ron. And to his point, a headline on the Washington Examiner says donald who . Two candidates didnt even mention donald trump, Elizabeth Warren and bill de blasio. Will that change tonight . Well find out. Threats from iran front and center at last nights democratic president ial debate. So a show of hands, who as president would sign on to the 2015 nuclear deal as it was originally negotiated . This president is literally every single day ten minutes away from going to war, one tweet away from going to war, and i dont think we should conduct Foreign Policy your time is up. In our bath rob e at 5 00 in the morning. Lester holt stepped on her signature line there. In case you missed it, new jersey senator cory booker was the only candidate who said he would not get back in the iran nuclear deal, be he also says he would not have pulled out in the first place. How is all of this playing in iran . Lets ask Fred Pleitgen live in tehran tonight. Fred, good morning to you. Is iran even interested in rejoining that iran deal . The jcpoa. At this point. Reporter thats a very tough question. I think it also depends on who you ask here in iran, whether its the moderates or the hardliners. It was quite interesting because just yesterday irans president Hassan Rouhani said the u. S. Should rejoin the nuclear agreement. It would be in the interest of the u. S. And the International Community as well. On the other hand we canned underestimate how much bad blood there is in iran toward the Trump Administration especially after the Trump Administration sanctioned irans supreme leader. Its something that iranian officials are saying again and again and the Foreign Ministry said right now the doors absolutely closed for negotiations. Also, of course, President Trumps rhetoric about possibly obliterating iran. Not going down well at all. Yesterday i managed to exclusively speak to the countrys foreign minister and heres what he had to say. Well, hes certainly wrong, but that statement indicates that the United States intentions are certainly illegal. The United States is not in a position to obliterate iran. They do not have the capability other than using prohibited weapons. To do this. Reporter so theres the foreign minister of iran. And the iranians today once again with some pretty strong rhetoric coming out earlier today. Senior iranian lawmaker came out and said the shooting down of the u. S. Drone was a lesson that america needed. Showing the u. S. , as they say, that iran will stand up to American Power here in the middle east, dave. All right. 12 17 p. M. There in tehran. Fred, thank you. All right. There have been calls to break up big Tech Companies like amazon, facebook and google. During that debate last night, senator cory booker said there is a problem with corporate consolidation. This is actually an economy that is hurting Small Businesses and not allowing them to compete. I feel very strongly on the need to check the corporate consolidation and let the free market work. He also said this again, i will single out Companies Like haliburton or amazon that pay nothing in taxes. Right. Amazon and haliburtons tax rates are low but not necessarily zero. The wall street journal reported amazons tax right from 2012 to 2018 was 8 . Before the debate, Facebook Ceo Mark Zuckerberg rehash his position on government regulation. He said facebook is selfregulating but wants more governments to step in as it grows around the world. Heres what he said about balancing free speech and what rules to enforce around election advertising. I really dont think that as a society we want private companies to be the final word on making these decisions.
