Will take effect starting monday. He wants to use the tariffs to threaten mexico from stopping immigrants. And mcconnell saying flat out that republicans do not support the move. The president firing back, saying it would be foolish for the republicans to try to block the tariffs. Mike shields will help us along in this discussion. Catherine, going to start with you. You call these mind numbingly idiotic tariffs. Why dont you say how you really feel next tame. So ethere athere are a numbe reasons why its stupid to impose. Multiple studies so that the its being paid by American Consumers and its going to screw up massively american supply chains, the auto oindustry in particular. A lot of stuff going back and forth many times over the border. And its going to hurt our ability to negotiate with the eu, with china. Because we have turned around after signing a new deal. Turning around and slapping terrifes on them. And if we do succeed, what makes trump think thats go doing reduce the number of people trying to cross the border from mexi mexico . On basically everything this is going to backfire. Republicans are not happy with this. Because afterall tariffs are taxes. So why is he doing it . Democrats wont acknowledge theres a crisis. The media doesnt want to admit theres a crisis. If this was a democratic president there would be cameras every day talking about records being set with people whiching to the border. Dangerous for them and the people coming and for our Border Agents and whos getting exasperated. There are cameras there every day and people are reporting especially on the children dying and were acknowledging the humanitarian crisis on the border including the news media. Democrats said there is no crisis. Lets not get side tracked. Even if i say youre right about all off that, is this the fix . It could be because what hes going to try to do is wake the Mexican Government up and say we need help and whos waking americans up to it. I dont think mexico can take care of it. They would still not be good at it and not actually stop this from happening because theyre not capable of it. In theened we have be to responsible for our own borders and this is an issue he keeps bringing up for this reason. Democrats and republicans got to come together and come up with a solution to protect our border. You have new reporting out about why he made this announcement. Heres what you write. You say whenever a negative story whiches around, its kind of like his safety blanket. He knows fox conservative media will coalesce. Aids say the mexico tariff decisions and developments to channel his anxieties and feel in control. Thats a pretty big step to change the subject. Is this a sign of just how troubled trump is by mueller . And its not just by mueller. But one thing we know pretty well at this point he real a is a home body and develops a lot of anxiety ahead of these foreign trips. Aids were quite clear aheadf ohis trip that he was not going to be received warmly in london and that ended up being true before he got there. Mayor khan of london wrote a piece in the observer saying he was essentially the most prominent vehicle of the far right and when trump landed in london that day, fired off tweets immediately about this. So he was feeling quite defensive before this trip. And what they were pretty clear to me about was this is the one issue that trump cares about probably morthan any other going back decades. Was a way for him to feel that he can rest control of the narrative. Its no surprise hes still tweeting about these mexico tariffs. You know immigration and trade, two of the big issues that help to get this president elicateded, maybe a got him elected. So does this strategy make sense to you . Uh, no. It mocks no sense as an American Consumer and taxpayer and someone whos going to end up paying the cost like every other american, whether its china or mexico. It makes no sense as a republican, traditional republican, what used to be a republican. Look, when a baby is born, they say you a boy, you a gaurl. And then they eask the baby. Are you a free trade snr against tariffs . Yes. Lower taxes . Yes. You are a republican. It is part of the dna of republicans to be free traders, to be antitariffs. So for republicans to somehow be rationalusi rationalizing some of them this move from trump, it is like im watching a remake, a bad remake of the political version of invasion of the body snatchers. It is removing the soul, the dna, the spine, the brain, practically every organ that a republican should have is getting removed by donald trump and replaced by straw. I wasnt sure where you were going with the baby thing but you brought it around. Are you a free trader . Yes. Youre a republican. Welfare assisted higher taxes, okay. A democrat. To bend themselves to for tariffs i think most republicans are for Border Security too. Yeah. Uhhuh. Not sure how those things are related. What does one thing have to do with the other . And that was a question i originally asked. What do tariffs have to do with Border Security . I dont know. This is the potentially hundreds of billions of dollars worth of question here. Its not clear how punishing American Consumers and american manufacturers and American Farmers and therist of trump can country, because theyre going to be hurting the worse. Im sure the does i dont know. You say it could be politically risking to confront the president on trade and yeah. Look, if theres one thing republicans are spozed to stand for its lower taxes and free traud and clearly thats not the case if they dont confront trumpen this issue. On the other hand teahes a popr figure, even its the more long term, politically wise thing to do, because they dont want to lose reelection themselves because all their voteers have lost their jobs t could still cause a lot of ire in the short run. And one possibility is trump didnt realize how much pushback he was going to be getting is they offer up relatively meaningless concessions. He says aha, i declare a victory and no confrontation needs to be had. Hes right in realizing he was not going to face back lash from republicans because for two years hes been looking the other way. But in this case youve got republican senators in some of the border states. John cornyn is a majority whip, the second most important senior republican in the senate and he understands how much this is going to enext state of texas and he has an election coming up. Im glad you mention republican senator. Lets play this from rand paul today. I think there may be enough numbers of people who think we shouldnt be allowing one person to make this decision, that we may have enough to override a veto on this. Do you think all are enough republicans that would go against the president to override a veto . I dont know. Theres been reporting of that. I think Mitch Mcconnell is hinting at that. Republicans are for Border Security. This is a frustration that theres something significant happening on the border. And hes not going to get any help and hes looking for things he do to effect change on the border to solve the problem. He has been talking about this for a lot longer than before the london trip. Hes been talking about this for a quite a while and theyve been advising him of the risks and he finally said enough is enough. His brand is to do something. Politicians get to office and go no one likes it. People unmy own party wont like it and thats why donald trump got elected. I understand where youre coming from but is it the right thing to do . Hes bringing light to it. Its an issue to him. I wish he would think of some other way to do it than this. Even the folks in his own part a. On this issue hes not getting help from republicans either. Or he could work with the countries sending all of these refugees to the United States. You say these spontaneous policy proposals are using a shortterm comfort for trump. You sort of eluded to it earlier. Yes. Eshe built off exactly what catherine says. When it comes to trump making these, as you put it, really drastic theyre less. Theyre a person of bond and if he thinks hes getting the short stick from the media. And were no longer even talking about this anymore. And it depends at this point what Jared Kushner and mexican officials can talk about. But again as so often happens with donald trump a week from now we could be on to Something Else entirely. I think your predictions probably pretty good. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi holding the line in spite of growing calls from her party to impeach president trump. How long can she hold that long with more and more democrats ready to move forerward . Allen is the author of the case for impeachment. So two very good people to discuss this. The democrats, the dilemma well summarized. Quite frankly, were beyond talking about this in terms off political implications. We have to do whats right. And people will look back on this years from now and decide whether we ebehaved honorably in the way we should living up to our Constitutional Responsibilities or in a very political way. To be clear, whos only advocating for them to formally look into whether or not impeachment is wanchted. Warranted, not to begin proceedings. In your opinion, is this the right first step . Absolutely. Democrats should not be consulting with political crystal ball to make a decision about whether to investigate a rogue president. Impeachment is the proper moral and constitutional need. But checking a dangerous president and constraining future president s for misdeeds and it strikes at president s power and his legacy. And besides the democratic crystal ball is badly cracked. The democratic leadership is making the same mistake they made in 2016 believing the polls and conventional wisdom and thinking they can easily defeat donald trump. The keys to the white house that correctly forecast Donald Trumps victory tell as different story. The real dynamics of president ial elections by looking at the strength and performance of the party oholding the line. It takes six to count out the white house. Right now donald trump is only down three. Therefore politically it is essential that the democrats nail down through an impeachment investigation and public hearings and i think through articles of impeachment and a public trial regardless of what the senators do, you will have turned the scandal key, just as all the publicity turned it against richard nixon. That would greatly luimit donal trumps cushion and a real contest for his nomination or a real part a. Are democrats so afraid of riling up Donald Trumps base that they are willing to abandoned their own much larger base that wants them to do the right thing . And trumps base is already riled up. Go. I dont think theres a democrat anywhere who doesnt think the base is go tag turn out in the next election. Its about the timing of how you do this. You dont get to start impeachment and stop and start agon. What i think shes doing is trying to build the cases. He doesnt get to tell the caucuses. Most of her caucus is not moving now and with the american public. Theres no guarantee that Mitch Mcconnell will ever even do a trial in the senate. He doesnt have to. Its not constitutionally mandated and whos proven he can make up the rules. Regardless of what the senate does, they have the they should be thaw should at least, the moral progative or reason for doing it. Year talking about moral and constitutional and Mitch Mcconnell in the same sentence. Theres an error in that. Just ask Merrick Garland on that. Fwl whether this happens or not, well find out. None of this oversight would have been happening right now if the democrats hadnt retaken control of the house. If they lose their reelection because theres a backlash against impeachment, were back to no oversight at all. My view is they need get started and quickly. My guess is they will get to the point of impeachment but they ought to do it slowly and carefully and not because activists are pushing it. Activists and some of the more progressive members of the party. Public support is 41 . It is growing, i would imagine. But you said the public needs to be fully einformed. You wont point out when the watereriga watergate hearings began and that number nearly tripled just over a year later. But there was a cable tv, no twitter. There was no social media, russian trolls and on and on. You say theres a moral case here. But you have these other factors that you didnt have. There is not only a moral case built out of fear but i do think there was a political case to be made as well. Let me elaborate. You dont start the process, as we pointed out with nixon. He was at 18 in terms of the public wanting to impeach him. You bring the public along through the investigation. It wont work with scattered investigations in six or seven committees. What is he a master at . Deflection, distraction. When you have a forml aal and focussed inquiry then youre much better positioned to bring them along. Ive rub out of time. And weve had you on before to talk about this. If you look at what happened with the mueller report. If you start impeachment hearings, theyll have have to cover that as well. Even Trump Supporters will learn what was actually in the mueller report. Do you disagree with that . I dont and i agree with what allen is saying. Thesont watergate hearings were not impeachment hearings. Thaw tw they were to investigate you do need to bring the public along. Otherwise well make the mistake the republicans did in 1998 which is try jam this through, which didnt work. Real quick. If you dont have a select committee and youre not going to get. The venue is the house judiciary committee. That is the venue by which you have impeachment inquiry. Nixon start. Because you have focussed hearings first in the senate and through the house judiciary and not messy, just clear, cool, protected. Coppertone sport clear. Proven to protect. House law makers grill federal Law Enforcement officials at hearing on White Supremacy, questioning the level of federal resources and violence by White Supremacists. At the haring, they acknowledged that federal government is not doing enough on domestic terror prevention. We know were not doing that. And we 3rd reason we havent done enough is its bureaucratic and boring. You have to institutionalize it, authorize it through congress or get it in executive order and weve never done in a Previous Administration and now were working to figure out how do we do that so the budget process can work and we can get proper funding for prevention efforts moving forward. Just there she admits theyre not doing it and theyre trying to do more to institutionalize resources to combat extremists violence. Thats a start. But then later she acknowledged the Trump Administration is not going to continue an obamaera Grant Program that directs mill yngz of dollars to organizations working to combat violent extremism. Those grants are expected to expire this summer and will not be renewed. Despite the fact that White Supremacy is a rising threat. So why would the Trump Administration do this, especially when they admit theyre not doing enough . Because it this is a growing threat and there are facts to back it up. The Antidefamation League found that White Supremacists accounted for 78 of the extremists related fatalities in twint 18. Thats up from 59 in 2017. The center for strategic and International Studies says the number of terrorist attacks in the u. S. By far right perpetrators has risen over the past decade and quadrupled over 2016 and 17. And in the past three years we have seen several high profile incidents involving white nationals. There was a deadly unite the right premises march and at pittsburgh tree of life esynagogue that left 11 people dead. Its no secret that hate in america is a serious problem and for many including members of congress at the hearing today, its personal. I want you to listen to a message rasheed received. How is that not enough to fall under domestic terrorism if youre targeting solely based on a good muslim is a dead muslim, obviously directed at me e . Todays hearing the first step unwhat could be a sweeping process to combat white supremacist violence in our own country e . But what is the next step . And are officials acting fast enough . So congress holding a hearing today on the rising threat of White Supremacy. Is enough being done to combat deadly extremists violence . Good evening. An important topic. Im so glad you guys are on to talk about it. Dhs official says theyre not doing teenough. What do you think of this admission . I think its important. I think theres four key areas we need address. Do we want a domestic Terrorism Law and what are the implications of that . The second is bureaucracy, as the dhs person says, its odd they blame the Obama Administration that hasnt been in power for three years. And the fact that we let social media amplify hatred and the fourth is of course donald trump. And the use of leadership and unterms of using our ability to communicate to the american public, not to condone or favor or even in some ways nurture this hatred. But to actually condemn it. Those four things he will go very far in stopping the rise of White Supremacy, which is lupged to the entry of donald trump on to the National Stage in 2016. Does it seem like officials are struggling to address causes and contain this . It does but why . Its difficult to say. A lot of the resources are allocated to and in the past three years i think from 2008 to 2019 theres only bun about 20 of murders internationally. Wheres when you look at demistic its bun about 70 and yet there doesnt seem to be a correlation with resneekt Amount Energy and resources being done towards that. When when we asked if White Supremacy was on the rise. I dont really. I think its a small group of people that have serious problems. If you look at what happened in new zealand, maybe thats a case. Theyre just learning about the person and people involved. But its certainly a terrible thing. Terrible thing. So eif the president doesnt see it as a threat, how does his administration address it . They dont or they do so very poorly. White supremacist attacks are definitely on the rise. In 2017 we saw an increase. In 2018 we saw 182 increase in white supremacist propaganda. And the consistent theme were seeing is donald trump. We started having a trend going back to the Obama Administration. What the president did is they tried to talk that down. Tried to the krj people to reach out, to be unified. Whats happened since that time with trump coming in with the attacks on muslims and mexicans, africanamericans and black athletes, the rhetoric about the shole countries. Its all designed to jin up his base and at the same time it has a detrimental effect and corrosive effect on the discourse in our country and the way people see each other. At this hearing, the fbi official talks about how the fbi is fuelling the threat. I think what youre seeing is what weve seen with the home grown extremists threat. Year seeing individuals self radicalized online in domestic terrorism and theyre engaging in radicalizing and mobilizing to violence fairly quickly and they dont have to be part of a group and can be halfway around the world to do that. And in the response you engz ammed before, you had the internet. Tell us your experience with online radicalization. Lets start with foreign terrorism. We knew for several years the extent to which groups like isis were using platforms to radicalize vinyls in the United States and throughout because it was impossible for them to travel often so you saw this in europe and the United States. The idea that its different in White Supremacy is ridiculous. Of course its the same radicalization process. The platforms were pretty rigorous in getting a lot of the stuff when it came to foreign terrorism and islamic terrorism to be specificic off of their platforms. They are much more reluctant to do that because of First Amendment or concerns it will get in political speech. They have to start treating them same because the tools are the same. These are isolated individuals, willing or able to be radicalized and have access to weapons to kill loss of people. And the more they become frustrated, so to speak. You think of people that have hope in donald trump that now realize life is not changing under him, righting . The coal minors or whoever. That frustration will then be, could be radicalused. These platforms are act as if they have no agency when it comes to the stuff and i think thats starting to be expozed. They have agency in terms of whats on their platform and whats being amplified in their super squirrely met rx on what gets amplified and what doesnt. Just to follow up with resneekt rhetoric that weve heard from donald trump and White Supremacy and hatred and bigotry. I think whats umport tonight point out is its actual violence. We saw during the Campaign Donald trump make many references to violence to people that were in the aubdiance. He said id punch him in the face. He was very specific in seits not just rhetoric. Its actual conversations regarding violence and i think its poim portent to mngz both things. Thank you all. Lets hope something comes of all of this. The Dallas Police Department Investigating a series of deadly attacks against transgender women of color. Three women killed since last fall. Over the weekend, the body of 26yearold Chanel Lindsay was found in a dallas reservoir. On may 18th, 22yearold malaysia booker was shot to death. But police say there is no evidence linking the assault to her murder. And back in october, 29yearold Brittany White was found shot to death in her vehicle, and in addition, 26yearold transgender woman was stabbed just this path april. She survived and was able to give police a description of her attacker. Lets talk about these cases now with Dallas Police chief renee hall and major vincent weddington. We appreciate you coming on to talk about this story and giving it some light. Thank you so much. Chief, im going to start with you. Thank you. What kind of connections do you see with these attacks on transgender women. Are you treating this as a potential serial issue, serial killer . Well, we have not been able to substantiate that at this particular time, and we are actively and aggressively turning over all possible leads relative to these incidents. If we just take you back, you mentioned, as far back as october of 2018, but well take you back to may of 2018, almost a year ago, we also had another transgender female who was latina who was also murdered, as well, and so, what we recognize is that there are individuals in our community who are transgender, predominantly black females and one latina, who have been victims of homicide. And we are doing everything that we possibly can to ensure that we are searching for the individuals that are responsible. Major, what kind of evidence are you looking at . And what should citizens be vigilant about . Well, citizens should be vigilant when it comes to their personal safety. They should not travel alone, they should be cognizant of their surroundings. They should not get into cars with strangers. And they should make sure that theyre around people that they know. So, we want to make sure that the community in dallas, the Transgender Community, is aware of these safety tips and they heed to these safety tips. Yeah. Chief, what led your department to reach out to the fbi for help, after this latest killing . Well, what we wanted to make sure is we tapped into the resourr resources of the bureau. We know they have access to profilers and they also have a National Footprint and platform and they would be able to let us know if this is happening anywhere else throughout the state of texas or throughout the world as a whole, so, we wanted to make sure that we had all hands on deck. You know, just dawned on me that were doing this story, were in pride month, its not the reason we did it, we just wanted to bring particular attention to this story, but it is pride month for the lgbtq community. As part of your outreach, your Police Department is scheduled to hold a town hall on thursday. Some activists in the community and Community Members feel that the rising violence has not been taken seriously. What is your Department Going to do to address that concern . Well, we we really dont want them to feel that way. We want everyone to know, in our community and outside of our community that the Dallas Police department has worked very hard to build relationships. We are working with abounding prosperities, which is a Nonprofit Organization that focuses on transgender women and making sure that they have resources, were working with the Resource Center in dallas to ensure that we are communicating and providing information. We also have an lgbtq liaison in the Police Department who is assigned to our Community Affairs unit, in order to give her a larger platform and give more resources to the lgbtq community. So, we just want everyone to know that we are serious about this crime as we are all crime in the city of dallas. And major, i have 10, 15 seconds left, ill give you the last word here. What are you hoping to hear from the community, how can they help you in these investigations . We need the community to reach out to us. We need the Transgender Community in dallas to reach out to the Dallas Police department. There is no lead that is insignificant. Theres something that you may know that can turn this case and open it wide up, so, reach out to the Dallas Police departments homicide unit with any information that you may have. Chief hall, major weddington, thank you for your time. We really appreciate you coming on and talking about this. Thank you so much. Thank you so much. Thank you. And thanks for watching.
