The system of checks and balances. But it looks like that system is being trampled under the president. Today the white house flatly rejkting the house judiciary kmutys request for documents, prompting jerry nadler to act like a king, as if hes above the law. But theyre increasingly talking actions that a majority of americans disagree with. Hes escalating his trade war with china can which americans dont want. Hitting more and more people in the wallet. And pols show they want everything from sensible gun legislation. Thats a question were going to ask and a lot to talk about. Alice stewart is here. Max is the author of the corrosion of can conservatism. Why i left the right. Let me start with you and ask you what i just said in the intro. Because on so many issues where the majority of americans feel one way and i mention this new banning of abortions in alabama, the latest example. We see the tariffs, on immigration, sensible gun laws. On trump himself. Give us your big picture of this. I think the big picture is donald trump dedoes not give a dam about 60 of the country. He sees himself as being the president of red state america, can which is 40 of the country and thats who he appeals to. Its actually stunning after more than two years hes made no effort to win over anybody else which is why his poll ratings are mired around 40 . Norm ala president with an economy this strong would be 50 . Trump is not because everything out std the economy is alienating a huge portion of the currentry. And some of the examples with tariffs, whos actual hurting his own supporters but it doesnt seem to matter. The great put a reotic farmersads he calls them. Theyre booing wa therabeing waaled by the trade war he started. Hes push their other buttons on immigration, abortion and all that other stuff. But the rest of the country is very much turn said off. Whos not going to get very much approval by the base. Whos clearly in charge of a lawless presidency. Youre a supportive president. If we look at the study from the researchsenter. 58 pr of people feel the abortions should be legal, while 37 say they should beile egal. This is an issue that motivate as republican base. Is that what this comes down to . This is a case that certainly motivates the base. The base supports prolife legislation. And while banning abortion is certainly not popular and not the majority of opinions in ivory towers of new york and the prolife legislation resonates with the red state america just so you know thats a national poll, not just of new york and the coast. Its a national poll. Right. But my point being is this alabama legislation was enacted by newly elected alabama legislators that are prolife and this is an issue that resonates with the people of alabama. Its not a sentiment shared by people in the more blue states and liberal states but this is the way alabama feels and there are 12 other states that have passed strict abortion laws this year alone. I expect men a more to come. This legislation i think should have included can exemptions for race and insist. But that being said these legislators mod the step because they felt the prolife issue is important and this is the first step in a long step of taking this further to the Supreme Court and ultimately evangelicals that supported donald trump. And i want to bring hillary in. I could see youre itching to get in here and if you look at the people who signed this bill, all men. Except for the governor. Nice pick canture. There it is right there. So whats your response . My response to that is not only do they not represent the people of the state of alabama, they dont represent this can country and yes, alice is right that there has been additional abortion bans across the country but to a person, this is just gone way overboard. And i think actually the president and his allies are taking this too far. Look, Brett Cavanaugh and neal gorsuch testified before congress to try and get to the Supreme Court. And they wouldnt say what alice is saying. They wouldnt say we want to overturn roe v wade. They knew that would mean they would not gt the votes in the United States sen toot be confirmed to the Supreme Court. 70 of this country do not want to see this decision overturned. And so i think what we have here is this kind of culture war that donald trump is going to rue the day that he started. It is one thing to talk about the conomy. One thing to mess with epipooals heads on trade and give farmers subsidies while at the same time creatinging a trade war and putting additional tariffs on exports. It is one thing to do that and another to mess with peoples lives and thats what the republicans are doing right now is messing with peoples lives. It wont stand. Ive got to ask you this and just stand by max and alice. Im just wondering if republicans and alice talks about this all the time. Shell say i dont like some of the things he says, behavior, past. But i like his policy and what hes going to do with abortion and thats my issue. Im just wondering are republicans more effective than democrats at championing these issues and getting their people to the polls and not having a litmus test or maturity test for candidates . And realize who their allies are, inemas are and they say this person isnt perfect. This is whos going to get my agenda through. Shouldnt democrats learn something from that . I think its a big less on. Youre right. Democrats have historically not made this place look like the Supreme Court and those kinds of appointments. The number one test of voting. Donald trump didnt win democrat in his election for presidency. He won independent. And i think what we saw with independents in november was that his comments on charlottesville, on immigration, his activities around the divisiveness went too far. I think were going to see that again in this next election. That democrats and independents are going to reject the social war that the president and his alus have started. Go ahead. This whole base strategy has long pedigree going back at least to karl rove and the 2004 Election Campaign where he decided there was no need to enlarge the base of bush support. All you had to do was mobile thiez existing bush sue porters and thats essentially what trump did in 2016. I think theres reason to think that may not continue to work because with this move on abortion, for example 8, theres a real risk the president s supporters are going to mobilize all these women across the country to march in favor of abortion rights. We look at the president himself, 53 of americans disprove of the president. If we look at the 2016 election, nearly 3 million more people voted for hillary clinton. Some of thises to the do with the a way the federal system is set up. Its kind of beyond that, isnt it . That is the entire trump strategy, which is to aneal states that have the electoral votes that can barely put him over the top, even though hes hugely unpopular with therist of the count ra. This could backfire because if you look at the politics of abortion going back to 1973, whichever side is losing is the one thats energized the antiabortion side has been losing. Now youre seeing whats happening in alabama. The possibility of the Supreme Court weighing in. That has the potential to have a huge back lash. You had Something Like this happen in poland a few years ago where they tried to out law abortion and they couldnt do it entirely because all these women marched for their roigtsz. Are you worried about back lash with moderates or centerist women . I think this will more than we saw in 2016. This will mote vaut, certainly the trump base and the social evangelicals that cameute to support him because thaw are es all this issue and the Supreme Court is not just a winning issue for this election but people on the Supreme Court are there for decades and they are es all the significance and umportance oof this. In term oz of theman a moderate women that may or may not vote for trump, this may not be their defining issue. A lot of women, the undecided and those in the middle. They are concerned with pocket book issues. This isnt going to be a deciding factor. And they have jobs. That is a factor. And peoples lives are taken care of o, then maybe they dont float on their lives. Once you ruin their health care, talk away their silver rights, democrats are waking up and theyve gotten weve been complacent over not so much. Thank you all. I appreciate it. Fascinating conversation. Just how worried should americans be . At panera, our salads are uniquely crafted. With peak season berries, creamy avocado. And a dressing fit for a goddess. Well, it lacks like this president may have us on the brink of war, as i should say. His trade war with china and his looming war with iran. The president threatening to send, his words with, a hell of a what are more than 120,000 american troops to the region. Can the chaoticed a mun stragz manage on two fronts . So much to talk about. Thank you for joining us. Its almost unthinkable but the Current Administration seems to be hurdling towards confrontation with iran. Should americans be worried . I think so. The thing with donald trump on china, he is in control of that policy. Its something hes long believed. Its can difficult to know whether its the right strat agor not because the chinese have been bad actors in the International Trade stake. This policy towards iran, it seems almost like were sleep walking into a war. The Trump Administration does not seem to have a plan. They seem to have subcontracted this policy, diplomatic military to john bolton, his National Security advisor who has long believed what the United States needs is an active, aggressive policy of regime change against iran, like regime change uniraq and afghanistan has worked out so well for us. I dont think thats Donald Trumps pall as. Hes very confrontational. And its quite possible that you add to that accidents, mishaps, and signaling that goes badly and we do stumble. But theed a mun stragz admi saying that iranians are threatening americans. People are pointing at john bolton. Another these guys have, for a long time, believed the solution to the problem in iran is not to manage it, not to have diplomatic relations, not to cut deals but to go in and try to replace and theres a fantasy that would get us anywhere. Look at ther record of regime change in the middle east. The signals theyre pointing to, its important to understand are very thin signals that seem to be more manufactured for the United States to take some military action. It reminds me of nothing less than the incident which got us into the vietnam war. The Johnson Administration was looking for something and they were able to manufacture out of a very small incident that turned out historically to be a clear can cut case of aggression. Thaw used it as a pretext to say we got attacked. I think something similar is happening. Theres no evidence the iranians are preparaing. And i had hines on earlier and he said similar things to what youre sawing. There are signs things could be changing. Trump frustrated bya advisors. Seems to insinuate he may be being led on by his advisors. Donald trumps views on Foreign Policy do not seem to be consistent with bolton or pompeo. Trumps problem in Foreign Policy is hes been trying on advisors because hes not quite sure what his own views are, other than as i say on china that hes had a longheld consistency on other things. He tries out these advisors, watches them and discovers, thats not what i think. Pompeii pompeii and bolton are hardlined and believe the path to some kind of durable security is basically to go to war with iraq. Its a highly dangerous strategy. Its very hard to back down without seeming like youre conceding. And donald trump doesnt like to concede. So thats going to be the problem. Theyre going to put in a position the only way out is to seem luke youre backing down. Even the president s usual whisperers steam be thinking out against. Itser laura ingram said it would hurt the president s reelection chances. Do you think that will make him think twice . I would hope theyre thinking twice. Its a really bad idea. It doesnt seem consistent with his own views. This is the problem with a president who is basically subcontracting Foreign Policy because he doesnt really know or care much. Hes subcontracted largely to his will in saudi arabia. Contracted to miami cubans, to senator marco rubio. Most of his latin american policy is immigration policy. So there is no actual american Foreign Policy. Its a sear as of contracted deals to the saudis and israelis in the middle east on immigration interests in central america. The result is we dont know what his instincts are. But he maybe hes realizing when hes confronted with this, i dont believe this should be going to war with iraq. An unprovoked war. It sounds like what i read from Eugene Robinson yesterday about the president just wing withing it. I have to ask you quick laabout this trade war because the president says hes okay. How much damage could this do . It could do a lot of damage. Trump, as i said, i think hes in control and has a consistent vi view which is the chinese have been bad actors. Whos he doesnt seem to understand basic trade economics is were paying the price. He keeps makinging it so when you put tariffs on the chinese, suddenly theyre pawing a lot of money and its going to the u. S. Treasury. Its a tax. And so its worth it if you can get a better deal with china. But its not worth it because of the revenues youre getting. We could raise taxes on americans anytime. And get revenues. A new poll gives joe biden a substantial lead over pennsylvania. Simone sanders joins me now. Good evening to you. The poll puts joe bide within a wide margin over donald trump. 53 with trump at 42 in the key battleground state of pennsylvania. I can know its early but that is the big lead. It is a big lead. And i am always happy to be back. It is a big lead. If you live by the polls, you die by the polls. Youre doing good, when youre not doing good and the polls are ebbing and flowing, you should be responsible for that too. Kind of like the president and the stock market. But look, we won the Vice President is running to be the democratic nominee and eventually in the general election and beat donald trump. And while this absolutely it should make everybody feel good. But we know this is going to be a fight. Were not taking anything for granted. And you saw Vice President biden in New Hampshire just a couple days ago. He well be back on the road soon. We have a big kick off launch rally youre in Campaign Mode. This is Simone Sanders in Campaign Mode instead of democratic analyst or strategist mode. Today Kamala Harris is asked about her interest in serving as joe bidens running mate. It got a lot of attention. I think that sure, people want to speculate about running mates, i encourage that because i think joe biden would be a great running mate as Vice President. Hes proven he knows how to do the job and there are a lot of other candidates that would make a viable and interesting Vice President. What do you think of her response . Look, i think it is very early efor folks to be having conversations about Vice President s. I think Vice President biden is in this race because he wants oo be the democratic nominee and the next president of the United Statesf oamerica. Im sure a number of the other candidates feel the same way so we look forward to seeing all the candidates on the campaign trail but im not going to get bogged down in the fulagss campaign trail gossip of the moment in terms of Vice President ial pucks if you will, don. Were foksed on taking our me message to the american people. He believes we need restore the backbone, and the soul of this country and reunite america. He was asked about the mass incarcerationerates of the crime bill he wrote when he was a senator from delaware. Watch this. 92 out of every 100 prisonersened up behind barsff a state prison, not a federal prison. This idea it generated mass incarceration, it did not. So heres what critics saw that this law disproportionately harmed africanamericans. A former Prosecutor Says this bill did contribute to mass incarceration. Whats your response to that . Well, i think the Vice President was very clear in his staumts. I think were going to continue to have a conversation about the impacts of the 1994 crime bill and i think hes more than willing to have a candid conversation about his role in that and things that that bill did and did not do. To be frank, hes right. A number the disproportionate number of folks who did go to jail one could argue, that goes to something called prosecutorial discretion, district attorneys, attorneygenerals and a conversation were going to have to have on the campaign trail. People are looking at 1994 through a 2019 lens and times were different. But i wonder if had this is it the kind of indorsement he wants. The president performing attorney and former mayor of new york city tweeted this. The 1994 crime bill passed with biden and schumer as leaders in senate and house, helped me and nypd reduce murder to 500 and then under mayor bloomberg, to 350. Thats over 20,000 lives saved. Joe, dont cave. He wants that endorsement . Were not engaging rudy giuliani. The facts speak for themselves. The crime bill, in a number of respects is problematic. There are other things the crime bill did do that the Vice President talks about in term oz of taking on the nra. One of the first times was in that crime bill. I think any legislator will tell you sometimes you pass legislation and you dont get. And no one is worried. We dont want the endorsement of rudy giuliani. Were worried about the american people. Thank you so much. The president s prized miami resort is losing a lot of business and wait until you hear why. Yesss, im doing it all. The water. The exercise. The fiber. President trumps golf resort in florida is one of the prize property oz of the Trump Organization. But the Washington Post is reporting that revenue is down sharply since trump announced he was running for president. Well, it turns out the president is hurting his own brand. Talk about this with Jonathan Oconnell who helped break the story and rick riley is the author of commander and chief how golf explains trump can which is a fascinating read. Im glad to have both of you on. Yesterday it was trump tower. Today is trump doral. Today youre reporting for the first time a representative in the president s own company issedis admitting the trump name is not good for business. The trump family has talked about how much money their brand is worth and how they have the best properties and cities in the world and theyve been unbralkable as a luxury brand. But again behind closed doors. When theyre looking for a tax break in this case in florida. Their attorneys are saying the brain is hurting quite a bit, driving down revenue, turning down customers and causing a big problem. Tell me about the significance of trump doral. That it holds for this president. Its the biggest golf resort. He changed the design complete laand made it just for it big bangers. And then he drilled them so craze ey. It uted to be a great stop on t pga tour but he landed the helicopter that cadillac pulled out. The whole tournament jumped the wall and is now in mex co. And he hacked off all the neighbors bu sawing i can dont like the stuff you do in your backyard, playing rock music, hanging laundry and sued theetds neighbors for 15 grand each and theyre luke im just loving. His immigration stuff doesnt play thatual in miami. Basically that was a convention play. And comp ans can dont want to take their convention with the trump name. I know ive lost a whole lot of money being president but it doesnt matter. Matters to him, doesnt it . Everything is about money, ratings. But the irony is this. His friends told me he did this just to build his brand. And now the brandsduing. Quick story. I went there a year ago today and i spent the whole day. I couldnt find anybody there. I checked out at 1 00. You remember the machine guy shautd up the lobby. No one was hurt because nobody was there. There other things i want to ask. You talk about the Marriott Hotel in miami. You said its crowded and its bustling. But if you look at the lob a, as he mentioned at the newly renovated deral, its just a few people in the lobby. They didnt think it would takes a big a hit as some of the other properties. Why did they think this would be different . I think the pool of customers and customerinis including luxu travellers and corp raugzs that are doing either board meetings or treats or other sort of meetings all of those can customers are thinking about whether they want be to associate would the trump brand and if theyre not closely align would trump politics, what were seeing is theyre saying we dont want and it could be, maybe not a majority of those customers, corporations but even if one Board Members doesnt want to do it, or one member of your golfing foursome doesnt want to, and i think youre seeing that in the numbers and ongoing basis. Its causing a problem for the Trump Organization while many are abandoneding the trump name properties, they continue to draw income from allies, right . They have spent money to hold fund raisers and retreats. Other right leaning groups have become consistent customers at trumps d. C. Hotel and maralagoo hotel in florida. So how big an impact does the influx of money have . The flip side is it the people and the customers and corporations and the lobbyiests and trade assocuations who are aligned with republican politics or adore trump are willing to pay a premium. So you see this particularly at his d. C. Hotel where being associate would the trump name and politics, the trump family, the mystique is really meaningful. And theyre willing to pay a premium to go there. And thats where you see the d. C. Hotel charges some of the highest rates in washington because people feel they want to be there. Whether theyre traveling or trump fans or lobbyists and going to align themselves with the president. Throws the places hes cashing in right now. Across the board in golf, any course open the public, and he needs the public has been terrible. Eric trump said this is great. You cant get a tee time out here. Its amazing. I went online and it was a frooud. I could get any tee time i wanted from 9 00 a. M. To 3 00. Erics just lying. Sawing our business is great. No, scotland, his course unaberdeen. I was there two days. I walked the course two days. People are staying away from this guy like its anthrax. You mention this. He did this, you said to buld his brand. It appears to be doing the exact opposite. M maybe in the calculation he didnt realize his base, that hes appealing to cant afford his property. Or maybe the calculations he didnt think he was going to win. Never thought he was going to win. The fascinating. Thank you, rick, thank you, jonathan. Appreciate it. Saurau sidener has the story. Reporter the deadliest antisemitic attack in it u. S. History last year shocked the world. It also triggered something shocking online. More people in the u. S. Conducted antisemitic google searches the days follow oing the attack than any other time in the preceding 12 months. That is one of the Alarming Trends we found when cnn investigated what happened online after an attack based on hate. There were also a spike in antisemitic searches follow oing the latest synagogue shooting near san diego. While the world mourned the loss of 11 jews who died while praying that tree of life synagogue in pittsburgh, users took to google and searched for jews must die and kill jews and i hate jews. At a much higher rate than on average, cnn found. Chatter on sites like 4 chan and h chan, reveal another trend no sympathy for victims. Hyperfocus on the shooter, either depicted as a saint, give hem a medal, one post reads, or a failure because he didnt kill enough jews. There seems to be a formula. After a massacre, White Supremacists are embracing the attack as someone who has engaged in violence against the system. Do you have any recommendations for what can be done to address the viral hate speech and incitement of violence . Eight chan and gab . For any of you. You all have any suggestions for us . Thats scary. Sir, i would add that we cant make policy without good advisement. Therein lies the problem, the other is funding to fight home grown radicalization. He led the countering extremism Violence Task force at the department of Homeland Security. He worked under president s bush, obama and for a few months president trump. In the first seven months of this administration there continued to be a of people, resources and prioritization placed on federal government programs, specifically at dhs aimed at addressing and intervening in the process of radicalization. Reporter there are tens of millions of dollars in funding to fight domestic terrorism. For the former office at dhs, funding numbers show the budget dropped from more than 21 million in 2017 to 2. 3 million in 2019. Experts say the trend toward violence is being fueled online and more must be done to stop it. Sara sidner joins me now. Sarah, in an environment where we have talked so much about the president s own rhetoric possibly contributing to the uptick in extremist behavior how can the white house not sign on to this International Call to fight online extremism . I know youve mentioned this and this is what theyre saying, that it is a concern about the constitutionality of doing Something Like regulating speech, worried about free speech and the Supreme Court, to be fair, has ruled that hate speech is a part of free speech. The question that were all grappling with, though, is at what point does that speech turn into action when you have violent speech online and then it turns into action as we have seen in a couple of cases, then you have a problem. And we have seen that over and over again in these mass shootings. The one in new zealand, the person using gab or eight chan, the one here at pittsburgh. The person using gab. And talking about their attempts at violence and that theyre going to do something violent. It is a very, very scary situation when you look at all the stuff thats online and we should mention that these are our allies that are signing onto all these. New zealand, france, jordan, canada.
