Another step of being the first black chief executive. We are monitoring the primary results, the race in arizona tonight. Joining us now is mayor gillum, good evening to you and congratulations. Thank you so much, don. I tell you it has been an amazing evening but it has been an incredible 18 months as we move across the states to red and blue and purple areas. It makes the case that working people deserve their seat at the table and we won tonight. Lets talk specifically tonight. It is a huge offset. You were outspent and you ran to the left of the crowd of field including the governors daughter, how did you win . Well, i tell you i think my opponent spent 90 million in this race. My wife refers to me as seabiscuit. We were counted out at many point and people thought that we would not make it. We kept ongoing steady retailing our way all across the state of florida, a state of 20 million people. People did not think we had a chance but we did. Thanks for the out pouring support everyday working people who basically decided that they have had enough of losing, they have had enough of the status quo and they wanted a candidate whos not perfect but one who reflects their values and one reflects the everyday experiences of the people in this state. Thats what we try to deliver and all over the state, that message carried. All right, let me ask you this, van jones a short time ago spoke highly of you. Dont under estimate and dont count you out because if you do, you are out of your mind. Everyone is analyzing this. Saying he won in the population centers, among demographics and among africanamericans. And, you know van said to me just now, he texted me and said obama is black and won florida twice, you need to remind people of that. What do you say to that . I think hes completely right. We had 20 years of losses and five consecutive democratic nominees for governor who have all come up short and again, no offense to any of them. I work for all of them and wanted to see all of them win. But the truth is running with republican light in the state of florida is not a strategy for winning. The strategy for winning is speaking to our voters and giving our voters something to go out and vote for and not against. We got to move more black voters more brown voters, more young voters, and progressive voters to the polls and i have to tell you, don, it has been my experience that whether we are in red parts or purple parts of the states, folks are frustrated and 44 of the people of the florida says they cant make ends meet. Our average pay of teachers rate in florida is the lowest out of 50 states. Thats a same. Every part of the state fills that message and they feel it personally. It hits them at home and in their pocketbooks. If we continue to move around this state and the places where we are welcome and maybe some places that dont feel so comfortable, talking about how well transform this state into one network from the more well connected, thats how we are going to win in november. Be honest with me, i am here in new york and you said when you are going through the red and blue parts of the states, people listen. Are people receptive to your message as you have been out and about in the states . We found people receptive in our messages. I went and campaigned in the villages. People are like what are you doing in the villages, well, there are voters in the village and they understand when theyre getting a bad deal. We had barack obama who tried to send this state 2. 4 billion to build the high speed road across the corridor. It was in my opinion in the best interest of the people of the state of florida to bring that money in the state of florida. We had an opportunity to expand medicaid for over 700,000 of the most medically needed people in our state. What i said to folks again and all parts of the state that it does not have to be a red or blue or purple issues. The job of the governor is doing the interests of all the people of florida. I am a democratic, most importantly i am a floridian who wants to build a state that has room for everybody. That message is what we talked about throughout the primary. Well double down on that into the general and for voters who again will find me not a candidate, they can choose and for superficial reasons, god bless them. We believe that we can do things in the state and thats what gotten us this far and thats going to make us the next governor of the great state of florida. I have to ask, do you think you are riding an antitrump . I didnt talk about trump. We all know hes uniquely unqualified to our country. We talked about everyday issues and confronting people and the truth is for the communities that we got to motivate and the communities that we got to move and inspire, they feel like they had it worse before trump and it has been bad for quite some time for them and what they want to know is what are you going to do for me and how do you make sure that i can work one job as opposed to multiple jobs. What will we do to make sure they have Affordable Health care and affordable housing. Those are the issues that i have tried to concentrate on and thats what allowed us to propel ourselves from victory and come behind candidate and winning this nomination making history of the first person of color to lead the Democratic Party towards the november election. When we get there to the november fixed elections. We fully anticipate that well be able to capture the hearts and the minds and consciousness and everyday floridians who wants a better future. This is Bernie Sanders tried to reach out to congratulate. Have you seen the statement about you . Let me read it to you. It says congratulations to Andrew Gillum on his victory tonight. What made his campaign so powerful is that hes not working hard to win the election, he has laid out a new vision of the course of the state of florida. No one can take on the political leads of their own. Tonight, floridians are joining andrew and demanding change. Andrew gillum is helping to lead it. Wow, i am honored and i am humbled by the support of the senator. He didnt have to do what he did. I mean i literally went out and campaigned for Hillary Clinton and i endorsed her and a circuit for her and in spite of all of that, the senators say i was the best candidate and came into her state and campaign alongside me. He showed a lot of character and strengths and quite frankly there are a lot of comparisons between our message and i think what we showed is that our candidacy has the ability to bring together the hillary wing and the barack obama wing and the Bernie Sanders wing if you will. If you believe in those factions in our party, bring those folks together and honestly, if we win in november, we have to have a nominee that can bring those folks together and bring some others, some republicans right along with us. The way we are going to do it is by giving voters a reason to go out and vote for something. Thats what we offer in november. You are vying to be the first governor of florida, thats a big deal. Can you imagine . Well, i will tell you, i am vying to be the next governor of the state of florida and i just so happens to be black. Nice. I think there is something happening in this country and even in these dark days of donald trump that in the south with candidates like Stacey Abrams and ben and me here in florida that the new south is being recreated and led by the people that help built the south in the first place. I think there is something powerful and poetic about that. The way we are going to win this race is making sure that voters know that i am going to be the governor for everybody and not just some but for all. Thats as good of an answer that i gotten from anyone here on cnn. Thats a perfect way to end it. Congratulations, good luck to you. Please join us here on cnn and especially congratulations. I look forward to it. Thank you, sir. Andrew gillum winning tonight and joining other politicians of color on the ballot in november. I want to bring in chris krill lizciliza. Shimon. Chris, to you, the governor of the state who happens to be black. You come on the program and you talk about what democrats are doing to turn out Younger Voters and progressive voters, is this working . I think it is working. I know Andrew Gillum personally and i supported him. I could not help but smile throughout the interview that he did with you. Those are the types of people that we are putting up, the Andrew Gillum of the world and the laurie underwoods and these are the folks of the future of the Democratic Party. Folks are taking notice and understanding that yes, candidates of color can win all over this country. And thats what the candidacy of Andrew Gillum and Stacey Abrams just to name two. He talked about candidate in the south and the south shall rise again, he says theyre the people who helped build the south. It is interesting. What do you think . No, i think you cant help but think of Andrew Gillum and Stacey Abrams, he mentioned it and maryland. I think you would think of them, you got a really fascinating dynamic in the fall, don. You have in georgia and florida, you dont just have democratic nominee whos trying to be the first black governor in the south. You have on the republican side two loyal Trump Supporters. He got a little bit over shadowed with Andrew Gillum. Rhonda santos nobody thought he would win until donald trump stepped in and saying hes my guy. We talked about this after georgia that you will have a clear choice, you will have a clear choice here too. It speaks to where the two parties are. Well see which one has more power. The right aligned themselves with conspiracy theories and White Supremacists and the agenda thats not for the working america and the left is for the working people. Breaking news tonight, three republicans buying for the chance to fill the senate seat vacated by retiring jeff flake. All three of them, Congress Martha Mcsally and kelly ward and joe arpaio. All are Trump Supporters. Good evening to both of you. Kyong, you are at the frontrunner of Martha Mcsally, whats going on . Reporter you can hear some of the cheering thats going on behind me. This is a packed house tonight, they are feeling very good about the first number that are coming into the secretary of states office. They feel that the very first numbers show that Martha Mcsally will be taking the night tonight. They believe shes the frontrunner of a tough primary. I looked over to her staffer, they give me a big thumbs up. They believe she will be coming out to give a victory speech shortly. Theyre waiting a bit more time and a bit more of a comfortable lead. They think this night is going to be going their way. You can hear it yourself, don. This is a happy room. We certainly can when you put the numbers up on your screen, we heard it. Kyung, i want you to standby, i want to bring in rebecca. Rebecca, you are at kelly ward whats going on there . Reporter its a little subdued at the moment. She addressed the group when the numbers started to trickle in. Make no mistake, don, kelly ward is the under dog tonight. It could have been a different race but a crucial turning point in this senate race was the decision by joe arpaio to toss his hat in the ring leading the vote between kelly ward and Sheriff Joe Arpaio thats what we are seeing in the votes tonight. The other is President Trump, kelly ward has been a supporter of the president , has framed herself as such during the primary and there was some question whether the president as he has in other primaries which is trying to toss his opinion into this race and weigh in on this race either for kelli ward or arpaio which he pardoned previously. The president decided not to weigh in that race, something that ultimately helps make mcsally boosted her and republicans are breathing a sigh of relief in washington. This is a Key Senate Race for them. They believe that kelli ward would have been less electable. They need someone who can win in the general. Thank you, both. Well get back to you as need be here on cnn. Back with us Chris Cillizza and symone. And our congressman having been here. Thank you for being here, it is an interesting contrast here, you have a Bernie Sanders democrat and you have a donald trump republican. Good news for the republicans in arizona tonight that the two french candidates arpaio and ward seems to be defeated. Republicans are as you said earlier breathing a sigh of relief that mcsally is the sk d candidate. Now, she had attack a bit to the right given she was dragged over there by her two opponents. She has to work to try to Better Center herself of the general election. Ward did not do herself any favors this week as it relates to john mccain. Thats correct. Yeah, she mishandled it horribly to speak that way of the wonderful senator, so ungracious. At the end of the day, it is not trending well forward and mcsally looks like she was in good work prior to the senators death. Senator, Martha Mcsally, was praised by donald trump. She embraced that. Heres part of her ad. Watch. My friend, shes the real deal. I am tired of their bs excuses, i am a Fighter Pilot and i talk like one. Thats why i tell republicans, grow a pair of ovaries and get the job done. It is interesting mcsally would not publicly enforce trump. But has she done enough for trumps base . Shes very she can be very direct as she was in that commercial. She struck me as having a pragmatic side. On immigration she probably moves further to the right. She will have to come back on that issue. Overall, i think shes well positioned to be competitive of this election. I want to be clear though. This election cycle is going to be very difficult for republicans. We republicans particularly in the house are playing defense just about everywhere. We know that. So this Arizona Senate seat may be the ultimate bellwether where you have two candidates of each party more or less one. This could be a race and one that could decide the majority. Don, if you look at it. Mcsally won the district thats difficult to win, she won by being able to appeal on both sides. It speaks to the fact that it is impossible to come out in a republican primary and doing anything other than aligning yourself with President Trump. I mean, mcsallys politics and donald trump politics are 180 degrees apart. She runs an ad like that and i remember the moment donald trump said that, it was signing the Defense Authorization bill up in new york. The republican senators were thrilled because they knew that could be used in an ad and that was a good thing for Martha Mcsally. Look at the races around country. I wrote about this today. Donald trump has not been hugely success for many things. He says a lot of stuff thats not true. One thing he says thats true, he moves votes in republican primaries. He definitely symone, i want you to weigh in. Mccain voted for trump, 83 of the time and all of these candidates are running much more conservative than them. Arizona is trumps land now, correct . Well, i would say that arizona is right for democratic, not just a nominee for a senate but a democratic senator from arizona. Chris, the issue of this primary has been much like a lot of the gop primaries, it has been bloody and a fight. The la times wrote this week about all republican candidates hugged on trump so much, will they be able to come out and win the vote they need to win. I think it will be tough. This is not a done deal for the republican nominee for senate. I do believe republicans should be concerned. There was a lot of money spent in this race, i think republicans are going to spend a lot more money because shes a challenger in this race. Thank you, i appreciate your time. Votes are being counted for the primaries on a night of a major offset in florida of the democratic gubernatorial primary. Tom foreman is at the magic wall, tom, as promised well bring you back to talk as is warranted and here you are. I want to check in with you again on tonights primary election results. Where do we stand . In arizona, big wave out there. Martha mcsally is up there while kelli ward and joe arpaio is here. Shes the least trumpy of all three of them and she has support of them. There is no antitrump candidate here. The most vocal is kelli ward. Mcsally going down the middle here. Joe arpaio pardoned by the president only winning down around here. The question is what comes next for them . On the democratic side, 58 reporting that shes almost 82 . She is the democratic hope for tipping one of the arizona seats in to the democratic category in the senate. This is jeff flakes seat. Thats what we are talking about here. Jeff flake has been one of the biggest opponents of donald trumps. There is a certain irony that all three people running to take his seat are people who are different than him and the other seat is john mccain which is appointed by governor doocey. Right now hes cruising ahead here and 58 reporting. Hell then have a challenge of his own. On the democratic side, if you look at david garcia, hes strong of 58 reporting. David garcia is a little bit of what we have seen with gillum down in florida. Hes expanding healthcare and big on education, remember the teacher protest that we had in arizona . Hes hitting the governor on that. At least in the governors race there, we could see what we are talking about elsewhere. Strong left and strong right and not much in the middle of voters there. Theyll have to make up their mind when november comes around. Tom foreman, pro at that magic ball. Thank you, i want to bring in our mr. Harry, good evening to you. Man, a stunning turn of event here. Lets talk about florida. Major victory of the left wing of the Democratic Party. I mean, look, it is a victory for the Democratic Party and it is a victory for young people. It was very much supported by young progresses. The you look at across the map, thats where Andrew Gillum ran up the scores. If you asked him about what made him rise at the end. It was the endorsement. That spurred a lot of money coming in of that campaign. It is a lot of different things, gillum put together a coalition at the end of the day, the question is will this help in the general election . Somebody is going up against Rhonda Santos, what do you think of them . The contrast between an africanamerican candidate running in florida versing a trumps endorsement. I think it makes for an interesting Election Campaign and voters have a real choice of who they want to lead their state. Do you think this makes an impact on how democrat candidates position this fall. Democrats need out to the working class voters and saying that democrats needed to be republicanlike or there is a school of thought that democrats needed to go back to and speak to the people they have spoken before and they felt that those folks have lost them. Look, i would say after the 2012 campaign, you saw a lot of republicans arguing they had to go through with the senate, they went with donald trump. I think that in the fall campaign, it will be interesting to see, who are the groups that actually do turn out in the fall but if democrats are going to take back the house as we head into the fall campaign, there will be turn outs from all of the democratic base, young people and women and College Educated and candidates that can appeal many different groups. Interesting. You probably thought you would be watching this from home and now you are here talking about it. An interesting night and it makes for an interesting november election. It has been a lot of fun. Thank you, harry. When we come back more on our breaking news, votes being counted in arizona. Votes are being counted in arizona tonight where three trump supporter republicans are battling the chance to fill jeff Flakes Senate seat. Thats a huge night in florida where Andrew Gillum has won the seat for governor. Joining me now maria cardona. I am going to start with angela, were you in the room tonight . I was in the room. Talk to me. I have been campaigning for andrew the last three days here in florida, we were in miami and gainesville and we were in orlando and last week in gainesville and of course, jacksonville and tallahassee today and yesterday and the energy has been electrifying. I cant tell you how i felt like this was a done deal yesterday. We were driving up campus yesterday and when we got to the campus, i looked to my left and there is a rainbow in the sky, it is written and over. The energy of the students knowing theyre going to go and support one of their fellow alums and knowing there are someone that looks like them and represents their interests and everyone counted out because he did not raise the same amount of money and everyone counted out because of his age because he was not the person whose turn it was supposed to be. It was his time and thats what we told the students of florida a m yesterday. We told constituents. I was going to give up in 2016 but i got my faith back. Steve, let me ask you, she saw the rainbow and we can all relate to that. I had one of our analysts earlier today. Democrats got the candidate they wanted and republicans got the candidate they wanted, what does it mean . Both on the right and left, what is winning lately is an anty establishment up start mentality. In florida, or whether it is rhonda sandes. The antiestablishment movement preceded donald trump. He did not invent that movement. That movement is very real and global in fact and we have seen it in the right and the left. You see it in the Bernie Sanders crowd and americas first deplorables crowd. We have different prescriptions on how to solve the problem of working class people being abused in this country. We agreed that working class have been abused by our business elites in this country. Our prescription to solve that is a lot more freedom and their prescription is a lot more governor. Maria, let me ask you this. Gillan is going to face trumps ally, Rhonda Santos which you know, which steve just talked about. In the general election for governor, there could be two more different candidates and ideologies. What is florida looking for maria, do you think . Whats great about Andrew Gillum victory is he represents the future of florida and what i mean by that is the coalition that he puts together is the coalition of voters that are growing. You have young people and latinos and africanamericans and you have women and lgbt, you have working class voters and middle class voters and republicans, he spoke to so many people who have believed for a long time and not that the system is not working for them. In that, i agree with steve. The problem is Rhonda Santos represents the actual system thats not working for so many people. What donald trump has done is i think he has definitely made it so that a republican who does not have his blessing cant make it out of the primary. With so many Diverse Communities in that state, i think it is going to be difficult for somebody like rhonda santes to win the gubernatorial. She set you up, matt. Certainly in florida that was the case. What did putnam ever done to donald trump . I dont know, this guy is a rising star. He had all credibility and credentials at a young age and being elected statewide in florida. He was not attacking donald trump, he was not running against donald trump but he got out trump by desantes. When it comes to picking primary winners, donald trump is michael jordan. Where well also talk about and people have heated discussions here on the panels. But, there is never any violence but the president is predicting there will be violence if republicans dont win come november. Well talk about that. Hey allergy muddlers. Are you one sneeze away from being voted out of the carpool . Try zyrtec®. Its starts working hard at hour one. And works twice as hard when you take it again the next day. Warning there would be violence if the democrats take over in the midterms. So, steve, i just want to read some of what the president told a group of pastors and other christian leaders. He said, this november 6 election is very much a referendum on not only me. Its a referendum on your religion. Its a referendum on free speech and the first amendment. Its not a question of like or dislike. It is a question that they will overturn everything that we have done and they will do it quickly and violently. There is violence. When you look at antifa, they are violent people. You have to get out, and that would be the ending of everything that you have gotten. Is it important to get your congregations to vote or there will be violence . Is the president engaging in classic fearmongering here, steve . I dont know why he would say there would be violence because of the democrats winning. I think hes correct that Political Violence is ascendant in america. It only emanates when it comes from the right, like antifa. They act a lot like fascists. They try to intimidate people and harass the police. Many are minorities. Those are the tactics of antifa. He is correct to point that out. Im puzzled why he says if the democrats take the house, that means antifa will rise further or use violence more so. That part, i dont agree with. But i agree that Political Violence is never acceptable. And we hear folks on the left make excuses for antifa, where they will assail the racist thugs in charlottesville. They wont use the same crew of criticism of leftist violence, which is unacceptable, as well. Angela, your face says everything. Television is about sound, too. Speak your mind. Um, wow. I would love to hear from steve how many antifa incidents is he aware of . How many incidents do you know about, steve . Quite a few. You want me to go through the list. No. I want you to give me a rough number. You asked me a question. Yeah. And the question was, can you provide a number . Occupy i. C. E. In portland. One at a time, please. Filibuster my point. Dont ask a question if you dont want to hear the answer. I am sorry you wouldnt answer it honestly. Thats how the left operates. If i way the way you want, youre tired of my view. Otherwise, youre not tall tolerant. Okay. Thats fine. Thats fine. And that you have just exhibited whats wrong with this country right now. We can stand on polar opposites or call for human decency. And what we know, regularly, the one with the bully platform that consistently urges violence, that consistently trolls women of cooler and people of color on twitter, is the one with the bully pulpit, donald trump. Before you go after the ghost and the demonic left, you favor a boogieman. You should chincheck your president on what he is regularly doing. That is, using his language, irresponsibly and calling for violence on people or at least, you know, teasing it out there that violence will there will be a violent uprising. Thats dangerous rhetoric. Hes saying that. When did he call for violence . Im sorry. When he says there will be violence. Steve he called for violence so many times in his campaign rallies. When . Oh, my god, when . Are you serious . I think cnn has a whole b roll of the times that donald trump has said, you know, beat him up. Beat him up. I will pay your lawyer fees. Ill pay the fines. Slap him down. So many times, steven, if you dont know this. I dont know what youve been drinking before you came on this show. But it is laughable when you talk about violence or when the president talks about violence. When he is the one who has been talking about violence at his campaign rallies. What he said, don, to me, what don what the president said during his meeting with the evangelicals, i think betrays a huge fear on his part that democrats are coming in the november elections, that theres so much energy, so much mobilization. We saw it in florida. Were seeing it everywhere. And i think he is scared to death. Matt, its your chance. You will get it. Were almost at the end of the program. I think maria is right. Donald trump is not good as using language and being he size. I think he wanted to scare evangelicals to supporting him. I think he is scared of whats happening, the energy on the left right now.
