Several americans named when they requested were involved in their terms, including a former ambassador of russia. Does President Trump support that idea . The president s going to meet with his team and well let you know. Well have an announcement on that. Is that a topic that came up in their conversation . There was some conversation about it but there wasnt a commitment made on behalf of the United States and the president will work with his team and well let you know if theres an announcement on that front. My reaction is that weve been hearing a lot of jabber walky, a lot of nonsense speak from the president over the last week. Hearing the press secretary say that hed meet with his team and consider it, simply goes against every fiber of any professional diplomats core. The fact that the state Department Says its effectively a nonstarter is the right answer. That in no way should be any equivocalsy between what is a judicial indictment against 12 gru operatives and an ambassador under the convention. Ambassador mccaul tweeted and said i hope the white house corrects a record and announce in terms this ridiculous request from putin. Not doing so creates more equivocalsy between legitimate u. S. Indictment of russian Intelligence Officer and a crazy fabricated story invented by putin. What kind of situation does this put diplomats in around the world, ambassador . The United States never signed on to the treaty of rome, and the icc, the International Criminal court because we never want to be able to put our diplomatic retches or military representatives in the hands of foreign justice. The United States has historically had an outsized international role. We put our government officials in places and in situations where many other countries wouldnt. So as a result, we have to take very seriously the issues of their privileges and immunities. And by the president beginning to entertain such a thought is something that should be very worrisome for all of my former colleagues. Yeah. And ambassador, trump again created a diplomatic mess again today. He said russia is no longer targeting the u. S. His press secretary said, thats not what he men. Russia is actively trying to undermine the u. S. Democracy. How can President Trump keep the country safe from the russian threat if he doesnt believe it exists if. Well, don, i got to be honest, im not sure what he believes anymore. I think what were seeing is that his words dont mean much. I would, i wouldnt, you know, the best moment i gmeme i got a day today was kim jongun standing there with a big smile saying, oh, i meant to say i wouldnt denuclearize. With the president s whiplash, changing of his rhetoric every several hours, i criticized Prime Minister may. No i didnt, i actually praised Prime Minister may. Nobody knows what to believe anymore when the president speaks. That loss of credibility thats a problem. Is enormously worrisome around the world. That is a problem. It very much is. For many of my colleagues still in service attempting to do Honorable Service as diplomats and military officials around the world. You can imagine the work that they have trying to explain when the president said to their counter parts. Its almost an impossible task. I wonder this week how in his own mind, what is going on in his own mind. If hes actually would the real, you know when youre lying in bed at night, you know, if hes thinking, man, maybe i wouldnt cut out for this. I surely screwed that whole russia thing up. Or i just dont know what im talking about when it comes to russia, i should just admit it. I dont know. I feel like this is a moment he screwed this up so royally, admit it and this is not something hes built for. You know, don im not going to go there, i dont know the president personally. What i will say theres a lot of my former colleagues deployed around the world whether theyre in military uniform, pinstripe, or khakis as diplomats. Those people made a commitment, each one of them, 10, 15, 20, 30 years ago to support the president s foreign policy, to support and defend the constitution of the United States. What i know that many of those people is a tremendous sense of disappointment. We all, who serve in government take an oath to fully implement the president s foreign policy. When it is very clear that the president doesnt himself know what hes trying to accomplish, it makes it virtually impossible for those people. And yet, they stay on the job, continue to work and attempt to do the very best they can for u. S. Interests. Those are the folks i think about when i lay in bed at night, not the president. Well, you know what i mean, you know when you screw something up royally. I know when im in deep water. And most people at their core knows. I got to ask you this, you resign resigned in the administration in march. And you wrote trump warped and betrayed the values of the u. S. How would you characterize the president s actions since then and what impact is it having on this country . Well, i have to say, dan don, very sadly, i dont think that anything the president has done since march and today, would lead me to believe that i made the wrong decision. Everybody has to make the decision for themselves. And i would be very clear in saying that only senior level officials, career officials in the government should even entertain the idea. If youre a midlevel official, not at a senior level or a confirmed position, you dont have that responsibility to be the president s personal representative. What i also think is that, the president is seriously miscalculating when he clearly plays to base by saying thing on a world stage that he hopes will be heard by the people who voted for him in 2016, and who will vote for him again if he runs in 2020. And that theyre not heard by the rest of the world. The United States only has about 5 of the worlds population. The rest of the world looks to us. And certainly since the end of the second world war, has looked to the United States for leadership. With his, confusing as i call it, his almost nonsense speak, whiplash back and forth, in terms of the rhetoric as to whether or not russia was meddling in our liberty countys, was not meddling, or i said they would be or wouldnt be, maybe they did not, what hes doing is sewing confusion. Hes an individual that enjoyed an international agreement. He comes home and he has no diplomatic immunity, it makes no sense what so far. The fact of the matter is, its huely unlikely this is even legal if the president were to go ahead on it. And frankly, i think hes going to stand down on it just like he has in the past. And this goes behind not being an eloquent speaker. This is knowing your facts, knowing history. Youre being aware and unning your intelligence briefing. This isnt, oh, hes some joe six pack that the regular guy can understand when he talks that way. This is far beyond that. Words matter, especially when spoken by the president of the United States, whose supposed to be the leader of the free world. I concluded sometime ago that vis relationships with russia and putin, theres some thing thats working here. A, the president has a failure to grasp the significance of what he says and the context in which hes functioning. Number two, Vladimir Putin has completely conned and duped him beyond imagination. Three, hes got the goods on him. You think hes got the goods on him . I dont know that and i dont know that its necessarily one of those three. Why was butina so strongly received . The whole christian right has strongly embraced putin as this model of a strong leader that they admire. Particularly for his lg btq crew said, his values. They believe christian gets it wrong when speaking to every day people. Theyre called to administer to elites like trump and putin who can bring peace together. Thats their vision. I think this is an important point that we sometimes dont talk enough about, which is, theres one thing about trump and putin and questions about whether theres, you know, conspiracy or collusion. Why was the party or elements of the party and the nra so receptive to putin, well before anyone thought trump was going to run . And this white attitude, as putin, the strong man, begins to embrace as a form of their theirtarian rule. That may have nothing to do with whether theres tapesings collusion or elections, it happened well before trumped and the party needs to face that element within them, which is, its essentially a white supremacist element that putin very much is playing on to. Well, his people were receptive to it. Thats what happened. Julia, the court papers. I dont know if you read all of them, heres a part of it about putin. A legal agent of russia whose plan was calculated and collected by a russian official. She even allegedly offered sex in exchange for a position within a special interest organization. So, i think, i mean this is well, anyone who saw the americans, we all miss it because its off the air. This is an asset in russia trying to be an influencer and a connecter between people she views as powerful, although this north dakota guy, i dont know how id rank him. And of course her contacts in russia who are essentially friend of putin. So, that is not a typical. I think the thing thats amazing to me and what we see in the Court Documents is the extent to which she was being followed for this many years. Which has got to get a lot of people very nervous about, not just her and what she was doing, but you couple that with the indictments on friday, of all the russians, and you start to get a picture that there is so much surveillance going on with these people, for good. This is in a good way. That a lot more is known, that its coming out slowly through these Court Documents. Her behavior is not atypical. She just seems very i would say much more press friendly and really desiring, a kardashiantype character than you would expect of an asset that you want to be an influence peddler without being on the equivalent of gq in russia. They cant just pick another judge to sit in their place. You have to have a true conflict of interest. There isnt one. Theres in financial conflict. No close relative. You said the big question is whether he will answer questions about it meaning many the confirmation hearings. Thats right. Its fair game for questioning. I think its fair game for questioning and they should question him on it. He wants to put the final nail in the ruling deeply, deeply troubling, he said. Is it enough to compel him to recuse from the Mueller Probe . I dont think what the democrats are trying to do here and i understand is look for any way they can to derail cavanaughs nomination. The only way they be do that is get to the more centrist minded republican who is are protective of the Mueller Investigation and thinking of collins and some of the others that have been trying to keep the administration from moving against mueller. I do think this is a sort of issue. The independent counsel law thats expired. Once the independent counsel was appointed, nobody could fire the independent counsel. He was a rogue prosecutor only beholden to himself. The special counsel which Robert Mueller is, is a completely different animal. I suspect Brett Cavanaugh will not have an issue with him because theres oversight. You may disagree with the oversight. Not you don, but meaning voters. With an independent counsel if that independent counsel were to go in a direction that the country posed, there was no elected oversight and with a special counsel although theres been a lot of fear that trump would exercise his power to fire mueller through his Deputy Attorney general, the truth is theres oversight. I dont think Brett Cavanaugh will have any issue with the special counsels existence. I want to talk about the fbi director christopher wrey. He was asked about the Mueller Investigation. I do not believe hes on a wimp hunt. Its a man ive known to be straight shooter. I dont think its a kwiwitc hunt. The president calls it a witch hunt. Thats a direct rebuttal. It is. Its consistent with what they have said. Its being carefully supervizzed. Its been well within the mission and mandate and its been very productive. Weve seen this support from the fbi and from doj for the special counsel investigation. Thats a good thing and hopefully it continues to try to rebut some of what the president has been saying. They want to impeach Deputy Attorney general Rod Rosenstein to share russia related document but the House Speaker paul ryan are standing in their way. Whats going on here in . Is this all about politics . Its all about politics. The president s allies on the hill are trying to protect him from the Mueller Probe. That means doing anything they can do to undermine the probe. Ros ros ros rosenstein has become seen as the avatar of the protector of mueller. You try to throw dirt at mueller and try to request document after document. If the house gets its hands on too many documents outside of the house intelligence committee, who knows where the information could end up. Its about trying to turn the russia probe into russia meddling and possible collusion by the president or his associates which may or may not have occurred. We wont know until mueller is finished. Turning that into an investigation into what they believe happened when the fbi during the 2016 campaign was investigating the trump campaign. Thats why theyre not going to let up and theyre based on republican grass roots voters in these ruby red districts like the ones that jordan and mr.
