Grief and Unanswered Questions. An apparent Suicide Attacker killing at least 22 ppeople at the manchester arena. Children are among the dead. At least 59 others were injured. The explosion ripping through a public space just outside the main concert area as everyone was leaving the show. Police are treating the incident as a an act of terrorism. Heres what we can tell you. A male at the scene has been identified as a probable bomber. Police are digging into his background right now. It was a chaotic scene just after that blast with thousands of concert goers all trying to figure out what was happening. Oh, my god. Whats going on . Whats happening . Oh, my gosh. Dave, what you see when you look at these pictures are thousands of young people. You see parents who have brought their teenage daughters, even children to this concert. When you talk to witnesses and survivors they describe the scene of parents waiting outside the venue to pick up their children, about 10 35 local time in manchester where toosh pick up their children from this concert. The targeting of young people just adds to the chilling nature. This one stands out, the particular aura of targeting young teenage goers. The Prime Minister of austral you, he said this is especially vile, especially criminal, especially horrific because it deliberately targeted teenagers. All right some 60 ambulances responded to the scene of the blast, taking victims to hospitals. She is there at the manchester infirmary where some of the wounded are being treated. What are you hearing from officials there, erin . At the scene, this is one of six hospitals that are treating victims from this horrific attack. We have yet to hear from officials on specifics in terms of the types of injuries theyre treating here. But we know theyre very busy in the overnight hours. They actually closed the hospital down to regular patients. It was only urgent patients that were being treated here. Those restricts, though, have since been lifted. Weve been speaking to some eyewitnesses that were here at this hospital. 17yearold ely ward was here. She was inside the arena for that horrendous attack. She described to us the moments that that explosion happened. It was just after Ariana Grande had just finished her last song and left the stage. Thats when the explosion happened. She said she could feel the explosion with her friend inside the arena. Her grandfather was on another level of the arena. He actually sustained a head injury and is being treated at this hospital. That is why ely ward was here. We also spoke to one woman who was here because her mother and sister were there to pick up here nieces at the arena. They sustained blast injuries. So were hearing more and more of these kind of stories of victims sustaining injuries, many of them parents who were there to pick up their kids. As we know as well from that press conference earlier today with the head of police in manchester, children sadly are among the dead. They are still working to try to identify the attacker who perpetrated this attack. All theyre saying publicly at the moment is it was a male seemingly who acted alone who carried an explosive device. Eren, thank you. We will check back with you in the next couple of hours. Ariana grande tweeting i am broken. From the bottom of my heart, i am so, so sorry. We will have hospital reaction there. Donald trump, the president of the United States, will meet with the palestinian president. We expect to see them at 3 40 eastern time, so you would expect a statement ahead of that, if not oncamera comments from the president as well. Authorities working to identify who this male is who they believed had an impvised explosive divisive, perhaps a suicide vest outside this location. It was only a few months ago with the westminster attack and of course in 2015 the attack that killed people. And this concert blast has surpassed that. Watching these develops over night with us, robin, and your First Response here as authorities dig into who this suspected bomber is. Well, it appears as they say it appears to be a Suicide Attack, i think you have to say it looks increasingly clear this is islamist in nature and then you start looking at whether this is isis dedirected, has it managed to smuggle one of its fighters into the the u. K. , has it provided any introduction or has any Foreign Terrorist Group provided any instruction in constructing the device . How did the authorities miss this . Was this person possible on the radar and it was just the case theres so many terror suspects in the u. K. Its not possible it track everyone . Has the person who carried out the attack got any kind of kecks . Has he been on whautsapp, is there an electronic signature there that authorities can begin to trace . These are the things that theyre going to be pouring over in the hours and days to come. Of course what makes it stand out is the targeting of teenage and adles want girls. Does that tell you anything about a potential group that might take responsibility for this terrorist attack. Well, its one that has absolutely no regard for decency of human life. That could be isis. I think isis would be the number one suspected group. Could be al qaeda. But youre almost at a loss for words to know who could target this specific audience there in that venue. And we dont want to speckilate, information changes quickly. There are sometimes leads and angles followed that turn out not to be correct, so were going to try to stick exactly with what we know here. We know 22 dead and children among them. And we know this venue is a little bit different. Westminster, a couple of months ago, that was clearly meant for maximum International Tourism impact, seat of government, tour the heart of luden. The tour system, transportation hub, these are clearly the soft targets that all the Counter Terrorism folks are so concerned about. All of these people in one place with only a few exits, those right there, those are the difficulty in protecting. Yeah, absolutely. And music venues themselves are something that terrorist groups in the past have liked to target. You may remember there was a suicide bombing at a Music Festival in germany last summer. The vatican in paris very specifically targeted by isis. There was a plot back in 2004 to attack in london. So because of the conditions you correctly laid out, it makes it an appealing target for terrorists because youve got high concentration of people, very hard to protect from the kind of attack of people leaving exits and leaving all together at one time, very easy to cause panic. And i think thats what youre seeing take place in manchester last night. Robin, a garn walker told sky news he looked on the ground and saw, quote, metal nuts all over the floor. What does that tell you . Well, again, it suggests potentially some kind of nail bomb, thats the kind of bomb used for maximum impact, cause maximum damage, maximum casuals. Again, it just shows us whoever behind this attack, truly had no regard for human life. They were looking to carry out the most amount of kill the most amount of people possible. I think its a stark reminder of the kind of hateful ideologies that exist that people would be in that venue in amongst those people, see the young people they were with, see the teen canalers, see the parents and think they were a target that deserved to be killed. It boggles the mind really anyone can carry out this kind of attack. But, unfortunately, we see it again and again. How much support, robin, is needed for a lone wolf to get the bomb making materials necessary and pull off Something Like this is or this something that needs coordination and network . I think it would more likely be a network. You do get the lone wolf style terrorists who can have some kind of instruction electronically from abroad. You may get an isis commander encouraging somebody to carry out a knife attack or attack with a car, something thats simple to pull off. But Something Like this where you constructed an irksed, that requires a level of expertise that would push us to fact there may be a Broader Network operating out there. I think these are the kinds of things were going to be the police and authorities in the u. K. Are going to be trying to find out. Robin, the Prime Minister minister theresa may will be holding a cobra meeting with her cabinet today 4 00 a. M. Eastern time here in new york. I want to ask you about the security in the u. K. , in england, in manchester. They were at a severe terror level warning, meaning an attack is highly likely. How secure is the london manchester u. K. Area . Well, the u. K. Has been the Severe Threat level has been there for many years. And u. K. Has been under threat very consistently now for under a decade. You referred in the bombings in the london transport network, dozens of thwarted plots. And the attack in manchester actually came four years to the day that a british soldier was stabbed to death by two radicalized nigerians. So there is very clearly a threat in the u. K. I think the u. K. Has developed a lot of money to Counter Terrorism, but there is a numbers game. And the fact of the matter is there are thousands of terror suspects in the u. K. The u. K. Doesnt have the ability to track all of them. So theyre constantly making an assessment who is the crocodile nearest the boat. Sometimes theyre going to get it wrong. And it appears as if yesterday, it was one of those people that did that. Thank you so much for monitoring this with us and giving your expertise. Ten hours now since that attack. Police are treating the incident as a terrorist attack and are focusing on a male at the scene as the, quote, probable suicide bomber. The blast ripping just outside the show. She went to the concert with her friend, spoke to her just before 10 00, was enjoying herself. And we havent heard anything from her since. Weve phoned hospitals. Weve phoned everywhere we can think. Weve posted on every social net, and theres nothing. Theres no news of her. Shes now registered as a missing person. Were putting her picture up on the screen. People just pushing and trying to get out. And i was screaming at people to stop pushing because my daughter was being pushed. To children to see their idles and then have this impact the rest of their lives is zusing. These people are cowards. Theyre just sick cowards. Who inspired him, and how are Police Responding worldwide . Now complete coverage right now. Im dave, brigs. And im christine romans. It is 10 30 in the morning where grief, outrage, and Unanswered Questions this morning after a deadly bombing in england. An apparent Suicide Attacker killing at least 22 people in the manchester arena. Children are among the dead. You can see these pictures. All of these young people there, some with their parents, some with their parents outside gathered for this concert. At least 60 were injured. This explosion ripping through a public space just outside the concert area when everyone was leaving the show. We can tell you a male at the scene has been identified as the probable bomber. Investigationers are digging into his background as we speak. Certainly a chaotic scene in the moments after this blast with thousands of concert goers all trying to figure out what was happening. Oh, my god. Whats going on . Whats happening . Whats going on . Oh, my god. We begin in manchester with cnns hana gorani with the latest on the investigation. Good morning. Well, we heard from ian, hop kns where the chief constable of Greater Manchester police and confirmed the grim news that the death toll has now risen to 22 up from 15 in the night. 59 people wounded. Six hospitals are attending to those injured. Many people here very concerned about what happened. The police also confirming that this was a possibly a suicide bomb wrg that one individual is responsible for this attack. That that man that mans body was recovered at the scene, and that person detonated an irksed, improvised explosive divisive. The big question now is was he working alone . This was not an unsophisticated attack. It required some pexter tease, putting together the bomb. We understand many of the injuries are shrapnel injuries, and this would in fact fit into the scenario of potentially a bomb with ball bearings and all sorts of other metallic shrapnel pieces designed to cause maximum carnage. It was one of several tour dates for the pop star in the United Kingdom as well as in ireland as well. And this was an attack on children, on 10yearolds, 11yearolds, tweens. A lot of concern, a lot of grief this morning as manchester wakes up to this terrorist attack. Its been many years since this type, this severity of terrorist attack has struck this country since 2005, since a suicide bombing on the 7th of july, 2005, took the lives of dozens of people in london. Back to u. And that attack in 2005 that was a coordinated attack, four different bombs there on the tube and on the train or the bus. That was something that really shook londoners to the core. 52 dead in that attack. And changes to security and surveillance in the city after that. Let me ask you about the response to this terror attack. I mean the roomformanchester as people springing into action and started bringing in frightened children and their parents and helping them get settled and helping them, you know, get settled and get to their family members. Tell us a little bit about the response around the arena. Well, we did see a lot of solidarity in the hours following the attack, people offering rooms, places to sleep, places to stay for parents and their kids. Also taxis were offering free rides for people who need to get from a to b. You can imagine some parents didnt know where their children were. Dozens of them were gathered in the holiday inn hotel, so for several hours you had parents and relative who werent sure their kids were aokay. The police provided emergency numbers and numbers for relatives and friends to check in on loved ones. So you did see a lot of solidarity but right now police and Counter Terrorism agents are scrambling because they need to know as quickly as possible was this person on their radar and also more importantly tat this stage, was this person working alone . Oftentimes in cases like this, you need someone who knows how to build a bomb. This requires a certain level of knowhow. Was the person who knows how to detonate a bomb, did they get the information online, or did they know somebody who knows how to put together this type of bomb . They need answers to those questions very quickly because they want to make sure they catch any plot unfolding before it happens at this time, because this is going to be a huge shock for the u. K. As mentioned its been years since this kind of suicide has struck this country. Ireland, is more isolated and can control who comes in and out. Again, that leads to question is this homegrown or from a person who came in from abroad . The Prime Minister is holding a security meeting called cobra in london. And were expecting her to update us on more what authorities know what happened in manchester around 10 30 p. M. Last night. Back to you. Well check in next hour. We are expecting that cobra meeting, as she said local time in london. We are expecting to see and hear from the president of the United States any moment now. No official white house statement yet. Sean spicer, the president s spokesperson said hes getting debriefed. He kept uptodate with his National Security team. She is intimimately aware of the issues and challenges of the United Kingdom. Some 60 blanks responded to the blast at the manchester arena. Our Erin Mclaughlin joins us live. Have you been briefed . Are doctors there, officials there telling you about the extent or the types of injuries here . Not at the moment, christine. Right now Authorities Say their priority is very much treating the victims that were admitted to the hospital in the wake of that horrific explosion. We know that some 59 victims in total were administered to some six hospitals throughout the manchester area. Were still waiting from authorities to hear what kinds of injuries theyre currently treating. It was very much an all hands on deck situation, especially when you consider in the over night hours they closed this hospital to normal patients. They were only treating urgent cases. So that just gives you a sense of the magnitude of the emergency that authorities here were facing. I spoke to one eyewitness, 17yearold ellie ward. She was here. She was actually inside the arena when the explosion took place. She said that Ariana Grande had just finished up her last song on stage when she her friend heard this explosion. They said they felt the explosion inside. Her grandfather was nearby and sustained head injuries and brought to this hospital. So youre starting to get a sense of not only children involved in this horrendous attack but parents, grant parents who were there to pick them up. Thank you, so much. Erin mclaughlin there. Keep us up to speed with any new information you get from doctors. Again, 22 dead and some 50 or 60 injured there. So were going to be watching closely as the day wears on. You check on twitter and there are parents, loved ones searching for their children, have not yet been reconnected with them. Just a deplorable depickable act of terror in manchester. The british Prime Minister called this an appalling terrorist attack. We a also heard from australian Prime MinisterMalcolm Turnbull who perhaps best characterized what he saw in manchester. As parents we keenly feel the anxiety of those waiting to learn of their childrens safety on this terrible night. And mr. Speaker, this incident, this attack is especially vile, especially criminal, especially horrific because it appears to have been deliberately directed at teenagers. This is an attack on innocents. Surely there is no crime more r reprehensible than the murder of children. Now, as we await remarks, you can see that screen in the lower right corner. Thank you for joining us. Robin, needless to say, we will jump out to join the president as soon as they begin speaking. But from what youve seen about this attack, whether it be the style of attack, who was targeted, what do you believe . Well, obviously we dont know the particulars yet, we dont know for sure which Group Carried this out, and theres a lot we still need to learn. But the fact its a Suicide Attack, the fact it was targeting civilians with such impunity, the fact there appears to be some kind of nail bomb and shrapnal suggests of course we dont the identity of the perpetrator. But everything im seeing from the police, the statements that are coming out, hearing from intelligence officials, it looks to me thats the direction this is heading in. It is the ultimate soft target. The bomber was not inside the vepue but outside we are told from reports from law enforcement. These children, these teenagers, parents, and grandparents walking out of the facility. So you have just all of this mew manatee coming out of the facility. What does the choice of this location tell you about potential strategies or how many people it would have taken to pull smk like this off . Well, i think if it was a suicide bomb, an irksed, i dont think thats the sort of thing thats easy for someone whos been radicalized over the internet to instruct. I think it requires a bit of expertise. So then youre essentially asking, well, is there a Broader Network surrounding the suicide bomber . Where did he get the expertise from . Did he have any training abroad . Could he have possibly been to syria or yemen or afghanistan . If its the case it was a Suicide Attack sw and there are indications pointing that way, that would suggest to me there is a Broader Network. And theyre not only going to be trying to find out who the perpetrator of the bopb is but who is in his phone list, who has been been contacting . He he been using encrypted message apps . And these are the things authorities are going to are have to try to find out in the days ahead. Investigation underway. You can see that screen, lower portion. Still no official comment from the white house. Lets now put up a tweet from the 23yearold pop singer Ariana Grande who was pfrping at the concert. She reacted in these words. Broken. At the bottom of my heart, im sorry so sorry. I dont have words. She is fine. We were told from her manager, was not injured in this attack. Robin, lets get back to you. The Terror Threat level in the u. K. Was at a severe. Some would ask how would this happen . Is there any way to guard against attacks like this regarding a suicide bomber . Is it impossible . Well, its certainly not possible to stop every terrorist attack, thats for sure. Theres around 3,000 people in the u. K. Mi5 believes are terror spects. Its constantly making assessments, who are the people who just talk a good game but dont actually are willing to go through and carry out an attack . So its not an exact science. Youre going to get it wrong on occasion. But the fact it was an irksed and so the vest, the suicide bomb was construcked in the u. K. , constructed under the nose of authorities. None of their Informant Networks picked this up, none of their electronic locations picked this up. Because this isnt like going to buy and seeking out civilians. It doesnt look like that happen. Theresa may, the Prime Minister used to be the homeland secretary, so shes aware of protecting the homeland there for the United Kingdom. Just two months ago there was this car rammic knife wielding attack in westminster. It was testififying right there in the heart of london. What kind of pressure does this put on the government in terms of immigration policy, in terms of Security Policy here . Well, immigration is a subject never far from the minds of british people. Its been a very important subject in recent months and years, and partially helps explain why britain voted to leave the european union. But, of course, it may be the almost three quarters of people who are involved in instances in the u. K. Are related to nationals. So the homegrown terrorism and also homegrown terrorists that carried out the suicide bombings in the transport network back in 2005. So the identity of the perpetrator will go some way in informing the discussion in the weeks and months ahead. I think were going to see a renewed conversation around immigration, refugee flows, for example, and related issues or were going to be asking why does this homegrown rad clization happen in the u. K. Time and time again . What can we possibly do to divert this kind of attack in the future . So either way theres going to be hard questions for the u. K. Robin, i want to read a statement we got from the state department. We are closely monitoring the tragic incident atman chester arena. We stand reddy to provide all possible consular assistance should we become aware of any affected usa citizens. We urge citizens in manchester to contact family members and loved ones that you are safe. I guess officials in big cities around the world, i know in the United States and new york monitoring allf its security procedures from a Counter Terrorism perspective whats sneks. I think you have to question are there going oo be many copycat attacks . Has this provided some inspiration for others to think this is how these are the soft targets, this is how i can carry out my plot, this is how i can do my bit, if we work under the assumption theres some kind of isis inspired motive . So theres going to be lots of concern across europe. I think when youve had a spate of vehicles being used as weapons in europe in recent months after taking the lead from the niece truck attacker back in 2016. But ultimately the problem is there are venues like the one in manchester in cities all over the u. K. , in leads, nottingham, lots of them in london. And this is the situation across europe. So really theres no way you can have any kind of Police Capacity to be able to safeguard all of these venue. Ultimately this comes down to having the best intelligence possible. And europe has different quality levels of intelligence service. The british are actually about the highest level you can get in europe, but it wasnt enough. Yeah, mi5 when they track the people on their list, critics have said the french authorities should take a page out of mi5 book for how they track there its 3 51 eastern time. In nine minutes theresa may expected to hold a cobra meeting. We had expected to have already heard from President Donald Trump along with the palestinian president. That was slated for around 3 40 eastern time, which is 10 40 there. We will get to it as soon as they begin. But now we want to hear from some of the victims, some of the victims families, some of the parents still waiting to be connected with their children after this deadly, gruesome terror attack last night in manchester. She went to the concert with her friend. Spoke to her just before 10 00. She was enjoying herself. And weve not heard anything from her since. Weve phoned hospitals. Weve phoned everywhere we can think. Weve posted on every social network, and theres nothing. Theres no news of her. Shes now registered as a missing person. Were putting her picture up on the screen for our viewers to see. What do you want people to know about what parents like you are dealing with tonight. I dont know if you can even put it into the words . I can. Its the most horrible feeling ever to know if your daughter is dead or alive. And i dont know how people can do this to innocent children. Shes just pechified that whoever did this would come to the house or would go to her school. Shes just shes devastated. For her 10yearolds to witness Something Like that, its horrific. People pushing and trying to get out. And i was screaming at people to stop pushing because my daughter was being pushed. To children to see their idles and then have this impact the rest of their lives is disgusting. These people are cowards. Theyre just sick cowards. And to target children, to target preteens. This is the point of terror attacks like this, to find a soft target and maximum Public Relations value. Yes, so obviously this is going to get huge amounts of high sale. Well, we know the terrorist Group Responsible for this is able to recruit in the future. But let me offer an alternative possibility, this attack which is so clearly focused on young girls, teenagers pop color. Pop color. I wonder if theres such a possibility this is such an agregious attack it may just turn people away. Because this isnt attacking the military sore some arm of the government. This is very clearly something above and beyond what weve seen in the u. K. Before. And so i do my only possible hope from such a horrendous incident is that maybe this will finally force a reappraisal from some of those people who are perhaps on the periphery of radicalized movements to see this is what these people, this is what these idelogs, this is what these fanatics truly want to do. They want to blow up young girls, people who couldnt possibly be in any way involved in any of the grievances you hear terrorist groups push forward about why they carryout these kind of attacks. Its perhaps a forlen hope, but perhaps anything i can offer with any kind of optism tonight. A little optimism ten hours into this, 11 hours into this is something sorely needed. Were waiting for remarks from President Trump and the palestinian president. Before we let you go, one quick question. Youve seen all of these pictures of young people running out of the stadium. Is there a need for need procedures and policies, do you think here . I mean this was an explosion outside of the main area, in a public area. Does there need to be maybe a perimeter or do we need to do things differently or was this just the one that got through . I tend to think it was the one that got through because of the scale you would have to do if you were going to change the way we concerts take place across the u. K. All the time of a similar size, a similar scale. And so do the police have to change the security getting into the concert or establishing a perimeter, possibly so. But then if its not concert halls its football matches or its restaurants. You then end up being at the stage where theres always going to be another soft target. So where does it possible end . Now, it may be there are some changes that need to be in context of whats happened tonight. But i think we also need to except as long as theres hateful ideologies out there willing to kill innocents theres only so much we can really expect government to be able to do to fix that. Robin, so great to have your perspective here almost 11 hours after this attack being treateds a terrorist attack in man chest rer. On top of all thats happening, theres a long list of important developments into the investigation of Michael Flynn and the Trump Campaign ties to russia. First, President Trump called two top intelligence officials sg them to publicly deny or push back this evidence of collusion between his campaign and russia during the election. That story first reported by the washington post. Current officials tell cnn that the National Intelligence director dan coates and nsa director were both uncomfortable with the president s dws and refused to comply. They called publicly revealed in march the bureau was investigating possible collusion with russian. Also the special counsel has now been briefed on memos comey wrote documenting conversations he had with President Trump. In one memo comey wrote that the president asked him to end the fbi probe into formal National Security advisor Michael Flynn. People familiar with the matter say mueller has also visited fbi headquarters to meet Counter Intelligence agents who have been working on the case for nearly a year. We have also learned Michael Flynn will not comply with the subpoena and will invoke his fifth amendment right not to testify. Richard bur and mike warner say immunity for flynn is off the table. They say theyre veviewing options to contend flynns testimony. And now saying Michael Flynn lied to investigators who vetted him for his 2016 renewal. Elijah comings said flynn claims his foreign trips were paid for by u. S. Companies and did not receive any benefit from a foreign country. But in fact including a 2015 event where he received 45,000 to speak were paid for by rt, a propaganda arm of the russian government. We will speak with david drucker, shortly on all of this.
