Director comey was very unpopular with most people. I got a very very strong prot t recommendation from rosenstein. Recently received that is simply not true. He happened to be widely respected. Keeping him honest, to sum up how the deputy described it, he wrote a memo. He read it and was persuaded to fire director comey. That is his account today, yet so is this just seven days ago. I was going to fire comey. Theres no good time to do it. I was gieng to fire regardless. Rewind to a couple days before that to the day mr. Comey was fired. On that day according to the Vice President himself it wasnt President Trumps idea. It was all rosenstein. As you can see, all rosenstein all the time. President trump made the right decision at the right time to dep the recommendation of the Deputy Attorney general. He took the recommendation of Deputy Attorney general. He brought the recommendation to the president that he should be removed. I think when you receive a report that is so clear and a recommendation by someone like the Deputy Attorney general you have no choice but to act. He provided strong leadership and to act on the recommendation of the Deputy Attorney general. He is taking the recommendation of his Deputy Attorney general. I am grateful that we have a president that has the to take the recommendation of the Deputy Attorney general and the attorney general to remove an f fbi. Today he readopted that narrative that he spoke against. Where the news comes full circle little did we know one day it actually. Perhaps one day it might not matter that much. This time it does. It is a focus of a probe as to whether anybody obstructed justice. Its not our only story. More now from the white house and sarah murray. Lets start with todays News Conference. What can you tell us . Well, the president certainly was not hiding his displeasure. He compared this investigation to a witch hunt. I respect the move but the whole thing has been a witch hunt. I can speak for myselv i can speak for myselmyself and russians zero. Reporter and a very different tone in that press conference than the statement we got under the president s name last night ensz shlly saying there would be no collusion but he would wait to see how this went forward. As you reported, the president felt blind sided by his appointment. Some feel it could be positive for the president. They do. They see this as sort of an opportunity, a way for the president to move beyond questions and for his staff toers say when they are asked about russia related questions, look, a special council overseeing an investigation, well wait to see what happened and to pivot back to the things that people elected him to do in washington. They are sort of looking to the trip as an opportunity to do that, to sort of reset, to help President Trump appear president ial and get back to sort of their main message. Of course, anderson, this only works if they adopt some kind of message discipline. It has been difficult for trumps team and also difficult for the president when he is frustrated. Its not so much his team because they teem to execute them pretty well. Its the president himself keeps reversing everything, all of their hard work. They skirted the cameras when they need to and the next day the president tweets. Today he didnt need to tweet calling this a witch hunt. He continued to talk about his legislative agenda. He is looking back. Its worth noting that one of his friends basically said the more we are reacting the worse this is going to get for us. We need to leave this alone and talk about other things. As you said, its very difficult for the president to do that when he feels like he is under attack. Thats how he feels in the wake of that news about the council. Thanks. More now from 1,600 president ial avenue tonight. You have been digging in this, what do you know . Anderson, throughout the day a small circle of advisers of the president have been talking about who they should hire for outside legal representation here. I mean this is an entirely new horizon that is about to happen here. A special prosecutor can look into everything esz essential l. They are going to present a plan to him to hire some type of lawyers, a team of lawyers to help represent him. I mean plenty of legal scholars say the president should absolutely do this but are surprised he hasnt already. Thats a good question. I mean its certainly typical for a president who is under this type of scrutiny to have someone from the outside. They are handling the work of his current job. This is about a private action, something that happened during the president ial campaign. You know, we know President Trump is slow to sort of accept new people, new advisers. So he is being presented a plan of who he can trust here. Its up tho him to sign off on that. Some want him do that before he signs off. Unclear if he will do that or not. Thats where there is a meelting today at the white house. They are presenting him that plan if they havent already. Thanks for that reporting. Deputy attorney general was on capitol Hill Briefing senators behind closed doors. He also potentially said something that throwing a Monkey Wrench into the white house. Several senators came out and made clear it was their understanding rosenstein was comey was aware he was going to be fired after they repeatedly sited as the reason and the president himself sited a the reason for the firing himself today. Now, here is what im told happened. Ros rosenstein staled he was aware the day before that the firing was likely to happen then he decided to write the memo. It is clear kind of at the crux tooz why this happened and why it occurred rob was aware before the memo was actually written. He didnt answer just about every other question related to the firing. They felt more answers should have been given. He will have another opportunity tomorrow wile he brie while bs the house. And what would have been the response . Most of the members up here worked with him when he was fbi director. There are multiple dongal probes going on and a lot of concern tooz what his investigation of special council will do. Take a listen to what lindsay gram had to say. But the take away i have is that everything he said was that you need to treat this investigation as if it may be a criminal investigation. So i think the biggest legal change will proceed forward with the ie dell of an investigation. And senators point here is this. They dont want to bump into a criminal investigation. They dont want to be subpoenaing documents that could get in the way. John cornyn said he believed this was the recipe for a train wreck. What they are trying to figure out wliegt now is how to kind of grasp onto a single point of contact. I asked paul ryan about this today. Does all of this undercut what youre trying to do . He said the drama doesnt help but we can walk and chew gum at the same time. This house has passed but the reality is when you talk to republican aids, these are huge items they are trying to actually move through. If you want to do that you need the white house outselling those issues. They havent gotten that up to this point. There is a lot of concern while there is relief that all this is going to do is tie the white house up even more in the days, weeks and months and years ah d ahead. It draws a lot of concern about the items they had planned. All of congressional committees in capitol hill and congress and the senate that are investigating, all of those will continue to move forward despite i mean regardless of muller. Thats exactly right. House intelligence requested the comey memos today. They have requested the memos from jim comey. They have made very clear, pelosi wants him to testify. I think the big question is as it moves forward, will anything run into anything else . Will they get in the way of bob muller as the special council in what he is trying to do . Most importantly, are these investigations going to be surface based . Will they be undercut by everything thats going on or will they come to a real conclusion . Im told when you look at what they are trying to do, think of it as a counter intelligence, that will be a focus. Thanks very much. The New York Times has a new article just out. President trump weeks after he took office and asked him when federal authorities were going to put out word that mr. Trump wasnt investigation. This is reporting by the New York Times. He told the president if he wanted to know details about the investigations he should not contact him directly but follow proper procedures and have them send inquiries to the justice department. Goes on, after explaining to mr. Trump how communications should work mr. Comey believes he effectively drawn the line that he felt jeopardized of the fbis indet independence. Jeff, this is fascinating stuff, the ideal there would be this direct contact which goes against protocol. More reporting from michael schmidt. I think what it speaks to is the president s mind set. He seemed obsessed by someone clearing him of any wrong doing in any of this. Thats why he started those conversations with the fbi director. Its so clear based on this rorgt at least that james comey has a deep paper trail. He said look, these conversations didnt happen. Thats really all they have done. Hay have not refuted it in any serious way in terms of specifics about this. James comey is known as being very me titiculous. He said no. Next question. What this shows is theres more to hear from the james comey side that will come out either in congressional testimony or with the special down sichlt im also struck by remembering that day in january when the fbi director who stands 68. He is a towering figure. The president called him up and brought him yeah. We are looking at it. And that according to this story made the fbi director so uncomfortable at the moment. Now we know why. You know e having a private conversation with the fbi which is white house is now refuting. I dont know why anyone would believe what the white house says because that conversation between comey and the president never happened. The only way they would know that is depending what the president of the United States told them. They have told them things which are not true or that he refutes a day later. The credibility to tennessee to line. Every story that has come out. The instant response is to say that did not happen. It is not true. The Communications People only know what they are told, quite frankly. All of this emanates from the white house. He also said Something Else that im just remembering now at that News Conference today. He said even my enemies have said im not implicated in this at all. Thats just not true. The fact of the matter is that people across the board have said we dont know if there is collusion. Thats why there needs to be an investigation. We are getting more and more of this. It must be frustrating to the white house. As of yet we have not seen the president refuting any of these very detailed recollections. Thanks very much. Coming up next, the president s insisting he is the real and late wlahat a special council is investigating. For my constipation, my doctor recommended i switch laxatives. Roundup for lawns is formulated to kill lawn weeds to the root without harming a single blade of grass. Draw the line with roundup for lawns. I want to remark the New York Times. Calling the president had called him earlier to ask to be cleared in essence on russia. The president kicked off the day with a tweet or two. Homes later he tweeted with all of the illegal acts that took place in the clinton campaign. There was the petraeus affair, the fbi investigatining Hillary Clinton and found no wrong doing. As for the whole witch hunt aspect, the president was already on a roll from that the day before. Here is his commencement speech. Look at the way i have been treated lately, especially by the media. No politician in history, and i say this with great, has been treated worse or more unfairly. Can you imagine if that was your commencement address . Joining jeffrey, is it helpful for the president to portray himself as the greatest victim of all what he is saying i was in the white house. Ronald reagan stood up and i think refer today Lawrence Taylor and all of a sudden he stopped and said i dont have any fans anymore. President s think this way when they are under assault. I would make the point that the media insisted that he had personal responsibility. It turned out he didnt. But every single night on the news there was that finger pointing at the president saying he was responsible. I understand what he is going about. I guess theres a difference between an off thanned report and giving a commencement address and constantly talking and tweeting. Every expert has said the best thing he can do is just be quiet. He clearly sees a double standard. You would agree its not wise for him to continue to tweet and talk about this. But he should do that. He should move the agenda forward. This is an opportunity. You can look at it as an opportunity to say theres an investigation. We give it our pleblessing. We are moving forward and be done with it. Absolutely. He is going to investigate this aggressi aggressively. He will be uncomfortable for aids who will have to answer questions. In the short term it really is a blessing in diskbiguise for two reasons. He does hiswork methodically and quietly. There is not going to be leaking because thats how he operates. It gives them the chance to duck questions and focus on their agen agenda. I think it might quiet jim comey. She a longtime friend and he will be to start leaking out memos and perhaps not want to testify knowing it would undercut the investigation. It could be in that if he finds no actual legal behavior, but no actual illegality he may not make a report about it. The full story might not actually be known. As we know, the president seems to be his own worst enemy. He tweets he is the one who invited the russians into the oval Office Without the american press. He said in an interview, oh, i fired him over the russians. The question is whether or not the president can control him. In fact the more he talk it is deeper he gets in. He reversed himself going back to the memo. He said i knew what i was going to do before that. He talked himself into the presidency before that. I think thats what he is referring to. He said this has worked so far. I dont think it will work. He cant see where he has an opportunity to say theres an investigation going on. This guy is well respected and we cant comment on it right now. Now let me turn to what im talking about. He is on safe political ground. Thats certainly true and its true of any president. He is also safe framing it as a media fight versus real america. He could speak about it in that way. Once you go beyond that and contradicting all of your aids along the way it makes things more complicated and messy for you. The white house has also reached a point, and i say this with no glee at all. I think everyone want to trust the word coming out. You want to believe it is real. They are making a statement that this conversation between comey and the president , it didnt happen. It didnt happen the way its being reported. The only two people who know are the two people who were in the room at the time. The president has a history of saying thin things to his aids which turn out not to be true. We saw this when he was briefed. He didnt tell his aids and his aids went out there and attacked cnn. We were right. He was briefed. It later came out. And i think it causes more problems for him. I think in part because he was und undermined a week earlier. So you get this situation where he built a situation for many many years and need to make sure he is preserving it as an honest broker. And theres also a credibility problem as well. You can see time and time again his aid is trying to defentd him and they are throwing him under the bus. A lot of his aids are coming to his defense. You wont see it much coming from the president s aids. There is a question here that im sure the Trump White House is aware of. If you go back to the obama interview with chris wallice in which he says that Hillary Clinton didnt intentionally have her email problem and it wasnt intended then a couple months later comby using almost exactly that same language. This is where i want you to go. That is where and i remember a lot of questions being asked at the time the feeling is out there i mean i have seen this in print that the fire storm that is following this isnt there and wasnt there for president obama. I do remember raising that issue. I think there seems to be a lot more evidence here. I mean he looked at the evidence. He appointed the special council. He was singing his praises. I think the smoke gets billowing and billowing and youre not really seeing the facts that clearly. And having a clear plan here and he is a very methodical guy could help distinguishing what is smoke and what is fire do you have the sense that the white house has a credibility problem . Sure. Most here know they have a credibility problem. They can tell it in the questions that are asked of them. They can of course read newspapers. Its here and they have a credibility problem. This is coming from surround sound from across washington, from friendlier places, conservative voices and other things saying they have a credibility problem. They hear it from capitol hill. It manifests itself. If you talk to people in leader mcconnels office they reminded them the credibility is essential here because they are trying to get on the same page. What the white house is trying to do, i noticed a couple of changes over the last week or ten days or so in this sort of fire storm of whiplash of stories is that they are saying more and more saying i dont know. Let me ask about that. I dont know the answer to that. The reality is because the president changes his mind and sort of gives a different thing. They know they have a credibility problem. The question is how to fix it. Proenl probably it will be a change and they are hoping this changes the subject. Its certainly a high wire act. Just ahead, President Trump aid he can only speak for himself, not the campaign. Should campaign be concerned . Thats ahead. Rosen stein gave a to oversee the investigation into possible coordination. Here is what lindsay gram said after the briefing. A lot of confidence in mr. Muller. I think the shot to the body is its now considered a criminal investigation and congresss ability to conduct investigations of all things russia has been severely limited, probably in an appropriate fashion. It was counter intelligence. It seems to be an investigation. The naming of a special prosecutor has implications for how they will proceed. A lot to discuss. You know, for the last two days you have been daying the president should lawyer up and stop tweeting and here he is saying this is a witch hunt. How many clients have we all had as lawyers who havent listen today what we advised them to do . What he said is so foolish, anybody who lived through the age where so many other kinds of witch hunts really occurred to say that he has so much information and fox news basically on his side and other media on his side. I dont feel sorry for him saying that this is a subject of a witch hunt. It has been levelled at the Trump Administration that advice is the do you think bob muller is going to really judge him more harshly . He is a politician. He is attacking the investigation. This is how he got elected president. I dont think it will hurt him at all. It did hurt him when he tried to put the blame on rosenstein. People are heros. They all want themselves to immerge well. He put his own dignity in front of the interest of the country. I think Rob Rosenstein was thinking about what his reputation will be. People care deeply calling it a witch hunt is consistent how he blasted the Russian Investigation in the bas. The irony is that it was made by rosenste rosenstein. He has been praising in the days after comey was fired. Lets cut to the exactly what the cover up has been about, what it is that the president of the United States does not want us to know, what it is the president of the United States thought he needed to impede an investigation; to undermine it, to dismiss it, to treat it with disdain we dont know yet the specifics. We know he feels very threatened by this investigation and what Rob Rosenstein has said enough already. This president try today use me, manipulate me. I have to choice but to make sure the rule of law prevails. Trump is threatened by this. The idea of selfpity is part of his ammo. It has been part of his ammo throughout his adult life, throughout his dam pacampaign. What we are seeing in the Trump Presidency is all of the things that worked so brilliantly in the campaign are working to undermine him as president of the United States. Im not prepared to agree with that. He is still the president. He is supported by his party. All of this talk of republicans abandoning him is just a couple of politicians saying they are concerned. Let the president kind of suggested he was more comfortable speaking only for himself. There is no solution between certainly myself and my campaign, but i can only speak for myself and russians zero. How significant do you think that is . If i were Michael Flynn i would be uncomfortable listening to that because he seems to be setting up, well, these other people were talking to the russians. Lets aseem thats true. Show me the criminal statute. I still sit here. I dont want us ever to become what russia became when he was told show me the man and ill find you the crime. What is the crime . Well, what the president has said is there was no collusion period. I understand that. Theres a difference between there was no illegal i agree with you, but it doesnt give muller jurisdiction. He has no jurisdiction to explore whether he did terrible things, engaged in wrong doing, only aiding and abetting. Exactly. Aiding abetting. It requires more than knowledge. It is an extraordinary situation we need to know about. The first threshold, you seem to convinced there has been no criminal violation. Let it proceed and then well find can i finish, please . You will never find can i it should be a special Investigative Committee which everything was done in the open. Even nancy pelosi called nfor. Ill call for it again. We dont have it in a black box of a grand jury that will never know. Well only hear selective leaks. You dont like grand juries, they have been around since the 18th century. They were in the bill of lights. Right. They were in a bill of rights as a protection. If you put 100 and ask how many would abolish the grand jury, 101 would abolish the grand jury. All right. Well leave it there. Thank you all. Coming up, multiple red flag ts about Michael Flynn coming back to thaunt Vice President. There is a report he told the Transition Team that he was under investigation for his tieing to turkey, what the white house is now saying. Tect it. At legalzoom, our network of attorneys can help you every step of the way. With an estate plan including wills or a living trust that grows along with you and your family. Legalzoom. Legal help is here. Questions tonight not only about the president but also the role the Vice President plays in the ever changing narrative. He came out with talking toints. It could be happening again. As the head of the Transition Team he is facing new scrutiny as the time line of warnings snaps into sharper focus. They tell cnn this is all taking a toll on the Vice President. We have more. Reporter the white house is deanyi denying a New York Times report that Michael Flynn told the trump Transition Team he was under investigation. The report puts renewed focus on mike pence. He maintained the first time he learned of my investigation was months later in march when the retired general registered as a foreign agent, a move that se seemed to surprise the Vice President at the time. Well, let me say hearing that story today was the first i heard of it. I fully support the decision trump made to act. The Vice President fully supports the president s deigs is to ask for flynns resignation. Also receiving a warning about foreign ties in a letter last november from dem krocratic congressman. Zb zbli sent him a letter warning him of it. Reporter the payment he received for a speech in moscow that was highly critical of the United States. During the height of the president ial campaignful cummin said he had no recollection of receiving the document. When i asked him later on he said he had a fog and he doesnt remember getting it. Reporter pence who was often acted as a trump trance later is facing a growing credibility problem. Just last week after the sudden firing of james comey pence repeated the white house line seven times stating that the decision the fire comey was based on a recommendation from rob rose enstein. Provided strong leadership. Only to be contradicted by the president hours later. I was going to fire comey. I was going to fire regardless. Back here with the panel now. Let start with you. So on your reporting that the Transition Team knew fly gnn wa under investigation. Was pence have known flynn was under investigation since he was overseeing the Transition Team . The white house is welcomed to deny this. They had the opportunity to do this. They chose not to comment. Today they decided i guess they are going to comment. I dont know what went on inside that transition. If the warnings they were given were not communicated to Vice President pence who was running that transition, thats a another story. At what point does this become an investigation. I think there are serious questionings about the velting and why they went forward and knowing what they did about general flynn. It is also fascinating the sheer volume of people who have been around the president or candidate trump who end up getting thrown under the bus or mislead and they put their reputation only to be undercut by the president in an Early Morning tweet storm. I know. Mike pence is perhaps the best example. He looks like he was either out of the loop or he was lied to or he was dis none of those are particularly good. I spoke with a Senior Administration adviser particularly about mike pence. He said to me he has enormous peace about this role in this administration. He said it kind of washes off his back in a way and that he also believes that next week youll see pence while the president is abroad. Hell be up on capitol hill talking about tax reform and health care. You have to think although pence is so stone faced about it you have to think this is a man who has got to be worried about his reputation. This is a guy who was, you know, the white house was inform that had flynn no only is under investigation but lied to the Vice President about you know, what the Vice President went out and wasnt let go for 18 days and its not clear when the Vice President was told he had been lied to. Yeah. And i think this is the challenge with trump. I think many of these folks are people whereputations who went o the situation thinking i will do my best for my country and that doesnt mean they are not ambitious people but you also end up in a situation where you have to serve somebody that requires a lot of loyalty but doesnt give you loyalty and consistency in return. It could put you in a really bad position. I think pence wants to do the best for his country. Im not sure how much influence he has had and that transition was incredibly chaotic. It is unclear what anyone knew at any given time. And pence and trump, you wouldnt find more total opposite people. Who you can say were close is the president and Michael Flynn for many reasons, economic support, Foreign Policy support. I remember reading that oped he wrote in november strongly supporting erdogan. Wonder why would he write this. Now we know he was paid by the turkish government. When it comes down to the president about what he said today wanting to bring the country together, something needs to be said about that video of erdogans bodyguards really attacking the kurdish protesters and if the president wanted to bring the president together, remind the country of what this country really is about. The freedom of protest. He should have said something about that today. Not overseas protests here in the United States. His guards are beating people up on the streets of washington, d. C. You see video of erdogan watching this, some reports he actually ordered this to take place. Yet the president rewards him by bringing him to the oval office. I think this is an opportunity the Trump White House does not see to have a really good moment in a really natural trump moment of strength to say you dont do this on our soil. Contrast a bit with obama, something similar happened under his administration, there was no strong response. But he has a tendency to like hold that thought, gloria, well come right back to you. Were going to continue the conversation. After a quick break, were going to hear what sally yates told me about her warning to the white house about Michael Flynn, next. Since i came to know you baibe ive been telling you how sweet youre. Ive been telling you how good youre. Please tell me how i look. You look so good, fantastic man. Vice president is standing by his comments in march he didnt know about fired National Security adviser Michael Flynns ties to turkey despite a New York Times report he told him two weeks before the inauguration he was under investigations for secretly working as a paid lobbyist. Thats the turkey side. Of course, its the russia side. Acting attorney general sally yates warned the white house about before she was fired. She warned that flynn could be open to blackmail by russia. Heres what sally yates told me this week. Was the conduct illegal . Was it illegality involved . Theres certainly a criminal statute that was implicated by his conduct. Do you agree there was no legal issue with flynns underlying behavior . I dont know how the white house reached the conclusion that there was no legal issue. It certainly wasnt from my discussion with them. Back now with the panel. Matt, do we know how Vice President pence factored into that warning from yates on flynn . Because we know the white House Counsel informed the president the day of their first meeting with sally yates right away. Was the Vice President in the loop as well that hed been lied to . I dont believe he was. Im not entirely clear on the timeline here, but i dont believe he was, and i mean, this is at what point do we kind of just say, okay, what is it . Are you just completely out of the loop and you have no role in this or do you know and youre not being straightforward with the American Public . The Vice President cant have it both ways. This is a white house that wants to continually do that and the case with flynn where the president is going on and still has praised him recently, yet even kind of they whisper and they talk, oh, you know, he really betrayed us, lied to us. Its all done under the cloak of anonymity and have to wonder whats going on here. It goes to your point earlier about, you know, the president expects a tremendous amount of loyalty from people around him, but he doesnt offer much in return. Gloria, i mean, sally yates said very likely there was a case to be made that there was il ileegality there, and thats what she informed the white house of. Sure. The white house even after flynn was let go said he was let because he lied, not that there was anything inherently illegal about what he had done. Clearly sally yates disagrees. She does disagree. She went over there with her hair on fire and said i cant talk to you, don mcgahn, white House Counsel, about this, over the phone, its so important that i have to go over to the white house and i have to let you know and she let him know and then we dont know what happened after that. And so i would i would argue that there is no loop in the white house to be out of. I think theres only one person in the white house. And thats donald trump. And he has, ive been told by sources close to him, that hes been complaining an awful lot about his white House Counsel, don mcgahn. I dont know what the reason is, maybe its because he the president felt he was out of this loop. I just, you know, i dont have any idea, but its hard for me to think of any other white house in which, you know, she would go down to the white house, tell the white House Counsel these issues that she had with the National Security adviser, you know, being subject potentially to blackmail and that a white house wouldnt act on that very, very quickly. Its stunning. It is incredible, though, to have the president of the United States, you know, basically seeming to blame all the people around him constantly without any selfrealization that at a certain point, its not everybody around you who is making errors. Is the president also i mean, when it comes to flynn, i think glorias right, he might have been the loop. He likes this guy, he seemed invested in protecting him even when he was firing him, he was effusive in his praise of him and i think when donald trump likes you, even if its for a brief period of time, thats the force that theres another view of it, which is whether he likes him or not, he knows something that flynn knows and wants to keep him close for that reason. Keep him loyal. Theyre in it for the long run. My colleague mike isikoff say they found out theyre still exchanging text messages. The president was textish Michael Flynn just a few weeks ago, telehim to stay strong. Is it because hes attached to him personally or something thats a bit more nefarious . I always go with incompetence than nefarious with donald trump. That doesnt mean there isnt nefariousness. But i tend to i do think theres another issue with this white house which is, like, their blacklist is so large of people they dont trust that it includes so many republicans and conservatives that theyre having trouble staffing so a yates or an Elijah Cummings coming to them, i can imagine theyre immediately discarded and sometimes there might be some reasons for being suspicious about information brought to you but not all the time. Sorry, go ahead, gloria. No, i was going to say, look, this is all about loyalty with donald trump. He was warned about flynn by his first Transition Team. He saw flynn misbehave at their original briefing when they got their first briefing, and he said, yeah, i know, but im told he said, yeah, i know, but, you know, he was loyal to me and he was the first person with brass on his shoulders that came out and supported me.
