What is going on here . Couldnt have two more different people. Angela merkel is this east german daughter of minister, physicist, deeply analytic and also somebody deeply committed to the western values of liberty. Born in communist dictatorship and while all of that is going on trump doing what he was doing in new york in the 1980s and going on howard stern and boasting about infidelities. Two very different people but philosophical difference is she deeply believes in the western project, the idea that the west has created institutions of liberty and democracy and kind of politically cohesive stand up to dictatorships like russia. With trump you dont get that sense. I think that tension is probably at the heart of it. Also doesnt help that donald trump was extraordinarily uncharitable toward Angela Merkel last year when she took in a million refugees from mostly syria and she was starting to hemorrhage in popularity, trump did something he often does, kicked her when she was down.
