President s trump tough talk on iran. This is cnn tonight. Im don lemon. President refusing to rule out military action against iran saying quote nothing is off the table and how worried are World Leaders about this. Plus free speech under fire. Uc berkeley explodes in violent protest. Will President Trump punish the university. Get to david rhodes, Michelle Kozinski and jim sciutto. In yemen, in scrutiny after the death of owens. What is the latest . Youve heard the Trump Administration in the last couple of days say this was an operation signed off by Obama Administration but ive spoken to Obama Administration officials and some have now spoken out publicly saying thats just not true. Second of all, thats just notice the way things are done. Would knnot sign off on operati in late january weeks or months before. There are many issues on the ground. Could only make a judgment at the last minute. Also learned today that President Trump himself was involved, directly, personally, in the final deliberations leading up to the moment just a few days before the mission, that he gave the final order to go ahead. Obama administration passed officials there disputing this idea this was a joint operation as it were between the Outgoing Administration and incoming administration. David get to you. Tough words flying around. President saying nothing is off the table in response to irans Ballistic Missile testing. What are your National Security sources telling you . That line that nothing is off the table, lot of president s have said that. But this is critical area, persian gulf with oil supplies. Iran has had speed boats coming close to American Warships in the past and Obama Administration would fire flares on the boats. If u. S. Were to fire on the boats would be escalation on both sides and during the campaign President Trump said was going to tear up iran deal and back israel to the hilt. Does this sound Like Administration now softening . Sounding like Obama Administration, at least these policies. Separate signal today calling on israel not to build new settlements and tough talk on russia from nikki haley. We dont know but give President Trump credit. You think its a good turn rather than being so hard line. To most experts yes. Coming in early and having disputes with mexico, australia and china, its a better few days and give Administration Credit for stepping back from the bellicose rhetoric. What about the building of new israeli settlements. Issued statement. While we dont believe existence of settlements is impediment to piece, the building of new settlements beyond current borders may not be helpful in achieving that goal. Different policy . Its different from President Trump on the campaign trail. Strongly aligning himself with netanyahu, criticizing Obama Administration, for condemning settlements. Now we see this statement. Speak out against the settlements comparably to the Obama Administration its soft statement. Saying it may not be helpful. Part of the statement from the press secretary today says that President Trump really doesnt have a position on this yet. Going to wait to talk to netanyahu facetoface this month. Compare this statement to what the Obama Administration said about settlements just in december. They said it undermines pursuit of peace and this is not how good friends talk to each other. For trump himself seems to be a change there but quite a soft dont call it condemnation but soft criticism when compared to the prior administration. Lets talk about ukraine. Russia threatening them for years, took crimea by force. Trump administration said nothing until today. Nikki haley with tough words. I must condemn the aggressive actions of russia. It is unfortunate because replay of far too many instances over many years in which United States representatives have needed to do that. It should not have to be that way. We do want to better our relations with russia. However, the dire situation in Eastern Ukraine is one that demands clear and strong condemnation of russian actions. Close our eyes or reading on paper, sounds like samantha powers. President obama also condemns the action in ukraine. No question. Is nikki haley speaking for the administration or herself . You have to balance her Statement Today very much in line with the Obama Administration view. It does sound like powers in the chair there. Balance against the public statements from the campaign and since the inauguration from President Trump, praising russia and refusing to criticize them for ukraine and also interference in the u. S. Election. Keep in mind nikki haleys comments are in response to grave escalation in the violence over the last several days and couple of weeks. Its an open question. As david roed was saying, must gift Administration Credit for moving to the center as it were on some positions but we have to balance against the previous weeks and months from the president himself and senior advisers. Is it a real change . Representation or demonstration of a dispute within the administration . Different camps there. Own choices for senior cabinet positions are contradicting him on policy decisions. Where is the direction . Dont know yet. Michelle, are some of the actions by President Trump a realization of how difficult the problems are . Is that the realities on the ground overtake Campaign Rhetoric . Thats the question. Thats why talking about it now. Everybody trying to mine sources within the administration to find out what exactly does this mean right now and what does it portend for the future. But i think there are many out there who feel like theres tempering of the message, theres a broader message. President obama, many, many times even after the election said that reality has a way of creeping in and governing is not nearly the same thing as campaigning. Maybe that is whats happening now. When we heard the new secretary of state Rex Tillerson today on first day ot state department with humble message acknowledging dissent within the department, i think that made a lot of state Department Employees feel like okay, still problems out there and differences of opinion, but theres plenty of room for workability. Don, at the same time, you have nearly 1,000 state Department American dpoiplomats sign a dissent letter on the travel ban for muslim majority countries. With this administration weve had so many swings that we have to be careful about overestimating the swing towards the center if thats whats happening here. Its certainly plausible and many administrations of different parties have done this. Campaign one way and when in the actual seat of power you have to lead differently. But keep in mind, you know, we have weeks and months and even the last several days major raucous public disputes with close u. S. Allies, whether mexico or australia. Its hard to say is it substantive or symbolic or representation of a dispute within the administration. We dont know yet. Former president obama went around visiting allies to calm their jittery nerves but now members of congress are speaking out now. John mccain, senator ryan and corker, sending reassuring messages to australia today. What do leaders make of this . Does it reassure them . No. There are a lot of anxiety out there. Colleagues at reuters and other hear about this. Real concern is steve bannon, seen as provocative person who pushed this ban and well see where we are in a week. Good couple of days according to experts. I sped senator ryan. Speaker ryan. Sorry about that. Coming back, flood the streets of brooklyn, protesting the president s travel ban. Audi pilotless vehicles have conquered highways, mountains, and racetracks. And now much of that same advanced technology is found in the audi a4. With one notable difference. The highly advanced audi a4, with available traffic jam assist. Real concern is steve bannon, the president s travel ban. Since President Trumps first day in office, americans are making their voisz heard in ways they havent in a long time if ever. Ceo of uber drops out of the council because of the immigration order. Nordstrom will stop selling ivanka trumps clothing line due to boycott and bombarded this week. And protest at uc berkeley turning violent forcing cancellation of a speech by rightwing commentator. With me a panel. And robert reich, saving capitalism. I wanted to have this discussion. This is a big issue. The violence at berkeley ultimately plays right into the hands of the rightwing, white supremacist, somebody like milo yiannopoulos. It absolutely. Does i want to be cleefrmtar. I was there part of the time. I know what i saw. Werent berkeley students. Outside agitators. Theres rumors they were rightwingers, part of a group that were organized and ready to create the tumult and danger you saw that forced police to cancel the event. So donald trump when he says berkeley doesnt respect free speech rights, thats a complete distortion of the truth. I mean berkeley opened its biggest auditorium to this rightwing Brietbart News character, hateful odious person. But said free speech is most important thing we stand for and it was these outsiders who caused police to come in and cancel it. You think its strategy by yiannopoulos or rightwingers, put this on in effort to show theres no free speech on a College Campus iek uc berkeley . I wouldnt bet against it don. Again i saw these people. They all looked almost paramilitary. Not from the campus. And ive heard again i dont know want to say factually but heard theres some relationship there between these people and the right wing. And the movement that is affiliated with Brietbart News. It is interesting because have been protests but nothing this violent, havent seen anything to this level. Berkeley College Republicans posted saying Free Speech Movement is dead. Protesters success is to defeat for Civilized Society and Free Exchange of ideas on College Campuses across america. This is where the Free Speech Movement was born. Is this a betrayal . Many of the leaders of the Free Speech Movement among us wrote open letter saying we believe in free speech. Hes detestable. His views are rancid. Really believe in free speech. Want to show up, show up. If you want to yell, yell. But this kind of thing that we saw not at all what people have in mind. What do you think of what robert said. Could have been paid actors . With all due respect to robert its absurd to think those on the right had any part in these the violence that ensued last night. And i think its insulting to protesters to call these people protesters. These are violent leftwing vandals. Vandals, yeah. Wait a minute for them to throw things at stores and set fires and mace people wearing trump hats, thats violence and criminal behavior and not protesting in any way shape or form. Lets all agree, stipulate this is bad. I also want to stipulate that berkeley as university opened its doors wide to yiannopoulos and said we dont agree with you, some of us but doesnt matter. Free speech comes first. When you say these are leftwingers who did this, i dont know thats true. And you say its absurd to summarize it might be other group that really wanted to incite create impression there was no free speech and give substance to claims that free speech doesnt matter. I dont know. We just simply dont know. It jumps to conclusion on both sides. These were outsiders, i can tell you that. I was there, i know the students and these people had nothing to do. Quick response and then todd. You have to give it to berkeley. Birthplace of the Free Speech Movement, opening up its doors to this speaker. Someone with alternative views to many of those on the campus. You have to hand it to them for that. But to follow up on what todd said about the leaders of the Free Speech Movement and letter they wrote, also written into oped in the paper. Wasnt necessarily calling attention to the difference in tone of his speech but called him out and out a racist. Thats simply not true. The speech and context of the speech was not racist comments whatsoever. It was simply from right leaning perspective. You dont think yiannopoulos is racist or makes racist comments . Absolutely not. I think when hes talking about cultural appropriateness, when you adapt. Appropriation. Thats not racist but its the way its become phrased and looked upon but thats not racist. Thats the tone of the speech. Yiannopoulos is a bomb thrower. The folks wearing the balaclavas so we dont see faces and dont know who they were are bomb throwers. Like steve bannon have declared total war. If that black bloc could be taken at face value, declared war on banks and smashed starbucks like its revolutionary act. Bannon wants to declare total war on islam. Theyre equivalent. Behind the mask is steven bannon. Extreme comment to make and dangerous to be talking like that. Dangerous . Its metaphorical. Behind the masks are violent people trying to shut down free speech and no place for that but like robt said. We dont know. Everyone assuming students who didnt want free speech for someone i hate to call him far right wing because hes on the fringe. Didnt check Voter Registration cards, i dont know who was arrested and if its proven they were uc berkeley students. I think theres a larger context. Donald trump and since the beginning of the republican primaries and other republicans in the primaries are not completely innocent, but donald trump has released, legitimizes and given permission for a certain degree of hatefulness and hatred speech and acts in this country ive never seen before. People who are Jewish Community centers threatened. Many more acts according to the fbi, hate crimes like weve not seen before, particularly against muslims. What is going on here . The context of what were seeing is unacceptable. To say that donald trump has nothing aud it with and steve bannon has nothing to do with it is itself a factfree comment. I think alice deserves a response. I think its easy scapegoat to blame everything like this on donald trump. Thats what happens every time we have this type of behavior. But what we saw with a lot of this, womens march here, lot of people protesting against donald trump. A lot of these are people frustrated they lost the election and its their freedom to come out and speak but seeing at berkeley is clearly violent people exercising not the right to speech but the right uncalled for. Largest demonstration in American History took place not on behalf of the minority of the vote but those who won the majority of the vote. Theyre not frustrated, theyre angry and disgraced and disgusted and embarrassed that this regime of knownothing bomb throwers, unreliable, falsehood speaking clowns are driving americas generations, driving americas history into the dirt. They are angry about that. Why shouldnt they be. You can call them names, call him a clown but hes president of the United States. And people out here burning windows and throwing fireworks into a starbucks store. Actually part of the left. Theyre like him. Him with bricks in their hands. Ive got to go. Out of time. Thank you. Well be right back. Wait a minute. Hey. Hold on, i can explain. You better have a good answer. Switch to geico and you could save a ton of money on your Car Insurance. Why didnt you say so in the first place . I thought yous was wearing a wire. Haha, what . Why would i wear a wire . Geico. Because saving fifteen percent or more on Car Insurance is always a great answer. It should be no surprise that President Trump called for prayers at National Prayer breakfast but he wanted those prayer foz someone you might not expect. Kayleigh mcenany and charles and hilary rosen and paris dennard. Good evening to all of you. Hilary the president turned a few heads this morning at National Prayer breakfast when he asked a room full of lawmakers, foreign dignitaries and leaders to pray for Arnold Swa Schwarzenegger for ratings to go up. I dont think its that interesting. Too many washington institutions end up being too somber and my guess the Prayer Breakfast that way too. I dont want people writing that im sackra ligs but the fact made a joke doesnt bug me that much. Write this down. Charles have at me. They were funny and lighthearted. We know that President Trump talks about his ratings and was a joke that i think was in good taste. Consensus. What bothers me more is the presumption that we take the full force of government and all of our leaders go to a christian Prayer Breakfast and have a conversation really about in some respects this kind of christian oppression. Really bothered me more he was talking about destroying the Johnson Amendment and that there were rumors about how they couldnt wait to get out there and let loose religious freedoms which to so many of us end up feeling like a cheer for zrim na discrimination. Thats not true. I know personally several pastors had sermon notes subpoenaed, doctor in georgia was fired from his job because the government took his sermon, scrutinized hem and because he professed traditional views fired him from job and its not discrimination. Its freedom of speech. Happening en masse level . All across the country. Mass stories of sermon notes subpoenaed and people fighting back. I think its a little causes a Chilling Effect across pulpits where that should be something sacred. We should look to religious leaders to give us spiritual guidance and talk about morals and values. Never want the government to come in and be oppressive of any religion, especially in United States of america. This Prayer Breakfast is important for the country to see and district of columbia. This is not just republican thing. President obama and other president s on both sides of the aisle attend this breakfast gladly. I think its interesting having this conversation when there are people who say that the u. S. With this ban is being oppressive of religion, muslim. One thing about it. Maybe you can look at it as kind of a joke in a way, but theres something a bis disconcerting and a bit makes you ill at ease to have him constantly make things about him all the time. There is a point at which diplomacy dictates, whether domestically or whatever space youre in, figure out how to go into that space and respect the people in that space. Doesnt mean that you have to put them on a pedestal or cant make jokes or whatever, but its not really always about you. Theres a quirk in the man thats odd, that it truly is always about him and about his i mean the fact that yeah. Bandwidth in any human being is kind of limited commodity. It has brakes on it. Theres a lot he could be talking about and thinking about. Fact hes constantly talking about him and ratings does throw you a little bit. It just says its inappropriate. Since you said that, back to the subject. Arnold schwarzenegger has his old job on Celebrity Apprentice and he said this. I have a great idea. You take over tv because youre expert in ratings, and i take over your job and people with finally sleep comfortably again. Yeah the funny thing about that of course is earlier before schwarzenegger posted video he put out a statement that said my ratings are a lot higher than yours are since the majority are disaproving of you right now. Which is true. I do think charles makes interesting point, the lack of grace that the president exhibits in moments where you think more would be called for. But go back to the substantive point about discrimination versus Political Correctness versus religion can we take a break first . Well be right back. Introducing otezla, apremilast. [ girl screaming ] [ laughter ] back now, Kayleigh Mcenany is here. Charles below. Hilary rosen and paris dennard. You wanted to make a point about discrimination. Kayleigh raised earlier pastors and religious figures feel they dont have free speech. Im all for free speech but seen with sean spicer at podium and rumors from the white house, administration is considering executive order to declare socalled religious liberty for certain things but its really a code word for allowing businesses and organizations to discriminate against people whose views they dont agree with, particularly gay and trans people. Thats where you take free speech and turn it against people. Thats unamerican, where we want to draw the line. President didnt go there today but they hinted at it at white house for the last two days and i think we all have to draw the line at that next step. Paris youve been at white house. Whats your response . I disagree with the assumption about what the administration is wanting to do and how she characterizes religious freedoms and liberties based upon what a religious leader or business wants to do on tenets of the space. He also said we have seen peace loving muslims victimized and threats of extermination against jewish people and all nations have a duty to speak out about that and Work Together and confront viciously if we have to. Its important to make it clear not just oppression of christians but muslims and jewish people at this faith meeting held today. Its great to hear President Trump talk about these issues in relation to religious freedom and liberty in america. Thats right. And comes down to not just christian but separate spheres of government and religion. Not just organized religion but church truly being separate. Synagogue, mosque. And to not have the government like houston mayor saying that five pastors had to turn over notes, rescinded request because the people rose up. Charles . You cant have it both ways. If you want to truly have a separation, if youre going to have tax exemption, that means what comes along with that is truly being separate from the state. And not getting involved in becoming a political organ. The moment that you do that you have mixed the two yourself. So you cant say i want the church to be separate from the state when i want to say something, and then i want to be able to introduce myself into the mix of church and state when i want to be involved in politics. February is black history month. That means youll be hearing a lot of speeches and conversations about how far weve come in this country and how far we still have to go. Next guests have a lot to say about that. Parents of Trayvon Martin, unarmed when shot to death years ago. Reaching a fever pitch when zimmerman found not guilty. I spoke to coauthors of a new book about their son. Rest in power enduring life of Trayvon Martin beautiful cover. Cant wait to read it. How are you doing . Very well. Busy with the book. Remember former president barack obama, spring of 2012 reacting to the death of your son. My main message is to the parents of Trayvon Martin. If i had a son, hed look like trayvon. And, you know, i think they are right to expect that all of us as americans are going to take this with the seriousness it deserves and that were going to get to the bottom of exactly what happened. I think many people remember where they were when that happened. Even with all the protests around the country demanding justice for your son, you felt there were major injustices in the acquittal. You wrote about it in the book. We felt as family we didnt get justice at all. Felt as though the state of florida doesnt prosecute as they should have prosecuted. We also felt as though they had the evidence but it wasnt laid out how it should have been laid out. Sabrina, in the book you write that somehow you felt that your son was on trial too. Youve talked about it but its interesting in the book how you write about it. Tell us about what you wrote. That was my first trial and as i sat through the trial, it seemed that trayvon had shot and killed someone and not george zimmerman. It just seemed like more focus should have been placed on who trayvon was and his character. I mean even if his family and friends should have been able to be brought in to be character witness for him. That he has friends and he has family and people that knew him, and we should be able to say who travyon was. It didnt feel like they portrayed him as a human, as a 17yearold child. He became a symbol. That must be tough when you are obviously having to deal with the death of your son and your son becoming a symbol and not even human to some people. What that was like . Well, it started back when it first happened. You had a 17yearold that was dead on the ground, and yet the police and Stanford Police department did not even knock on doors in the neighborhood to find out whose child that was. And when tracy went to the Police Station and called the Police Station several times to try to get information, they would not give him information. You know, any parent would want information on their 17yearold child. We felt it was so unfair what was going on and we just felt like there was nothing we could do. We felt so hopeless, like there was not anything to be done. So, you know, we are not feeling anything. We are not asking for anything that any parent would not have wanted, which are answers for what happened to their child. When i mentioned the movement, it sparked your sons death sparked a movement called black lives matter. Do you think you have made progress . I think that there is a small portion of progress being made. But overall i dont think we have gone far enough, especially when we talk about black lives matter, we talk about in the context of i cant walk down the street or i cant walk away from the police with my hands up. I am still getting shot in the back. I am driving in my vehicle, my hands are on the dash board and i still get killed in front of my child or i am choked out on the streets in front of a store. So, when we speak of black lives matter, these are the lives being taken away in those instances and no other nationality is being taken away from us like that. We know all lives matter. But black lives are being affected by the Police Brutality and by the killings going on. You see what happens with the police officers. The difference is when people say crime happens in the black community. Police officers are sworn to uphold justice. They are supposed to be the ones keeping justice and peace on the streets and deescalating situations. Too many times you see that not happening. You campaigned with Hillary Clinton with a group of mothers. And then it did not turn out the way you wanted it to turn out. You became friends with her. Do you think the country can come together under a trum Trump Presidency . I think the country is divided, but if we have a common goal. And that is what the womens march on washington was. We were there for womens rights. Regardless of if it was if you were republican or democrat or independent, black, white or latino. It didnt matter. We came together for a common goal, and i certainly believe that can happen again. You are willing to give the president a chance . I have listened to some of the things he has said. It doesnt seem like he is trying to bring the country together. Seems like he is dividing the country even more. I dont know what plans he has and what plans he has laid out to his administration, but from what he has said it does not seem like he is bringing the country closer together. That is a very honest answer. Would you run for office . You say you would like to. One of the things i did say is that i was exploring the idea. I certainly believe that if you want to be part of the change, you know, if you want to make change you have to be a part of the change. That is just something we are taking a look at to see what position, you know, that we can apply for. What position that we can be a candidate for. Run for. Once we get all of the information we need we will determine if we are go to run or not. It will be interest to watch. Can you tell me about the foundation . The foundation has been here for since 2012. What we did, we have mentoring programs. We have a Scholarship Program for our children. We give two scholarships away every year to children that attended the same school that travyon attended. We have out reach programs to mothers who have lost children to senseless gun violence and fathers alike. What we do, we get out in the community. We stay involved. We stay engaged. We try to educate. We try to continue progress in our pursuit for justice. I have to ask you, was it tough . Absolutely it was. Absolutely it was. It is like by writing the book we had to retell the story. We had to live the story again. So many feelings came up. So many emotions. But that is why the book is so real. That is why the book is so emotional for some people because we want them to kind of experience what we went through. The book is called rest in power, a parents story of love and justice and the birth of a movement. Thank you so much. Thank you. Appreciate it. You guys have handled yourself with nothing but dignity and class. Thank you so much. Thats it for us tonight. Thanks for watching. I will see you right back here tomorrow.
