In rampage shooting at ft. Lauderdalehollywood airport. Suspect is esteban santiago, picked up bag on arrival. Goes into bathroom, comes out firing. Taken into custody almost immediately. Sources saying that he claimed several months ago he was hearing voices telling him to watch isis videos. And breaking news out of washington, Intelligence Community concluding in just released report that Vladimir Putin himself ordered hacking to hurt Hillary Clintons campaign and to help donald trump. Get right to the latest on the shooting at ft. Lauderdale airport today. Good evening to both of you. Boris, the fbi held a News Conference earlier. What did they say . Reporter essentially this would be a complex and difficult investigation because of the scope of this. You have to imagine how many people were affected by the shooting today. Just learned about betwe10,000 e removed from the airport and still people being evacuated from all the terminals. Stuck here since about 1 00 p. M. When all of this unfolded shortly before that. Sources telling us gunman arrived on flight. Went into restroom after retrieved his bag. Pulled out weapon, a hand gun it appears, and opened fire on people waiting in the baggage claim area of terminal two right behind me. We learned later today that he had purchased two weapons recently. Two glocks. Glock 9 and glock 43 but its unclear if those were the weapons he used in this attack. I asked spokesperson for the fbi if when he visited the Alaska Office of the fbi if they asked him about firearms . Said they couldnt answer that question at the moment but said would be a difficult investigation. Listen to more of what they said at the press briefing. As you can imagine with this type of investigation and this type of incident, it is a longterm very difficult, complex investigation that requires us to pursue all leads and avenues. Conducting investigation not only here in south florida but several other states as we try to pursue the suspects activities leading up to todays horrific incident. In custody, long interview conducted of the individual by fbi and broward sheriffs office. Will be charged federally and most likely have initial appearance in broward on monday. As you heard, don, a very difficult and complex investigation ahead because of the Law Enforcement presence we still see here, its clear its going to take some time. We know hes being integrated in federal custody. Talk to us about terrorism. Said they werent ruling it out at this press conference. Very important to point out. As you said, not ruling it out right now. Also very important to know that fbi still has jurisdiction over this case, if there was indication it wasnt terrorism would likely be stateled investigation perhaps. But when you have someone who goes to fbi office and confesses to hearing voices that he believes are from a National Intelligence agency that are telling him to watch isis videos, that raises red flags. Were told that agents at that Alaska Office referred him to local Law Enforcement. He apparently told those agents he never had intent to hurt anyone so they referred to local Law Enforcement who had him evaluated. Mental evaluation in november. Obviously didnt turn into anything, he was able to get on the flight, come here and carry out this attack. Hold on, i want to bring on rene. What are they saying happened . We know the ticktock, the shooter arrived at airport, traveled from the top to second floor, lower level and retrieved his bag and opened fire. We also know that the fbi is looking into other states that he may have traveled to besides alaska. We know he originated in alaska and traveled from there to ft. Lauderdale but they want to know where else he traveled. So looking into travel in the past as well, hoping to maybe perhaps get a better picture of other connections to other individuals he may have who have other information about motive or persons state of mind in the last couple of weeks or months. And were hearing conflicting reports about an alleged fight on the airplane. Somebody said maybe it did happen but not bad enough to have people meet them at the gate. What went on . Weve been hearing reports about possibly some sort of altercation on board this delta flight and perhaps that is what angered him and caused him to retrieve the firearm. However investigators followed up on that and havent found vacation th anything that suggests that happened. Usually if Something Like that rises to that level crew radios in for backup to meet the aircraft. Would be Law Enforcement meeting them as it pulled up to the gate. Didnt happen in this case so one might believe even if there was some sort of dispute, wasnt something that rose to the level of concern for the flight crew, didnt see that presence when the aircraft arrived. Thank you very much rene. Talk to you soon. Go to Dwayne Dickerson now, he was at airport today when shooting started and joins me now by phone. How are you doing . Good evening don, good to be with you but wish it was under better circumstances. Thank you for joining us, wish it were too. Walk us through what happened . What did you see and hear . I arrived at airport around 12 45 and i was at front of the line, next in line to check my bag in to the flight. And then i heard a very loud bang. And i was upstairs in terminal two at delta ticketing counter. And i heard the loud bang so i looked next to me at other passengers and we all kind of looked like wow that sounds a little weird. But we werent ready to say its trouble or a gun shot. Then just as fast as that thought went through our minds we heard second, third, fourth shots and said to each other out loud, somebody is shooting in the airport. So i ran and jumped over the delta counter and encountered a ticketing agent and i was frantic at this point, tell us where the exits are, theyre shooting, need to get people to exits, where are they . She was just gone, in shock and mortified. So she couldnt even articulate a response. So instead of running out the door you were checking in bag at departures . Ticketing. Second level. Rather than arrivals. Upstairs. Instead of running out the door you jumped behind the counter to hide. Thats correct because the shooting from the door area, if youve been to the airport, closer to the door theres escalators, open air area between the second and first floor. So way those gun shots were echoing and bangs, coming from that area so seemed like running towards ticketing counter would be saver and further from the danger. Behind the counter or in a room. So led you into a room normally reserved for employees correct . We kept asking for exits. Asking her and didnt get a response. So two doors off the to left. Kept saying are these exits . Finally passengers going in there. Asking if those were exits. Answer was no. Actually a storage closet. Probably 30 for 40 of us piled into this storage closet. Looking at your video now. How many people in there . At any given time probably at least 40 people in there and area was no bigger than a regular home closet. Really small. How long were you in there. About 30 minutes. Not knowing what is going on. And that was the toughest decision, right before i went in there, i said to myself, do i want to go into this area that one way in, one way out, and wait to be a sitting duck or take my chances and run through the terminal to try to find an exit. But from the perception of where the gun shots were coming from, danger was more so towards the exits than going into the storage room. So we piled in. And then you realized after a while, you took the chance of going out or did someone tell you it was okay . No, no. We took the chance. It was unsaid situation but at some point i think we all felt like are we sitting ducks . So we would peek out and see what was going on. And at some point it seemed to calm down, maybe 30 minutes later we left the storage room and ventured out by ticketing and no more than five or ten minutes after that we saw the Police Officers and sheriffs officers, running, yelling, pointing guns. And then over the intercom, i believe it was one of the first if not first announcement, shelter in place, stay calm. All of that led us to believe, and rumors coming, getting Text Messages and everybody else was that there was second active shooter in the parking lot by terminal two. What was going on in your mind . Tirifying, didnt know where to run, how many shooters there were and where it was coming from and what would be the safest place to hide. Most terrifying thing and most of us made the decision this storage closet was the safest place to hide. Only place we knew that the shooter was not. Where are you now . Ft. Lauderdale . Finally released after multiple interviews with fbi agents and Police Officers. I was released around 8 00 p. M. And at home. In florida . Im at home in florida. Yeah. Dwayne dickerson, thank you. Glad youre okay. Thank you so much. I appreciate it. Coming back, more breaking news. Deadly rampage shooting at ft. Lauderdale, new details. For only 10 per month. Like the Samsung Galaxy s7. Now to discuss it with my panel of analysts. We certainly have a knowledgeable panel to talk about this. Juliette start with you. Heard from eyewitness moments ago. Did you hear the scene he described. People didnt know where to go, felt they might be sitting ducks. Jumped over the counter into employee only areas . Yes. Tand sounds familiar. Will be Lessons Learned from this. Theres a lot of praise which is understandable because of the tremendous work that was done today. But every jurisdiction has an obligation to determine what they can do better. Communication to the public is one of the most challenging aspects of real time disasters like these. Active shooter cases people should know you run first, hide second, engage what is happening third. So the fact that communications were not clear or in a timely fashion is just something that every juirisdiction has to lear. Its one of the things in midst of the crisis what to do with the large amounts of people what to do. First reports were multiple shooters and doesnt know where it was occurring. We talk about this a lot whenever something happens like this, terror or whatnot. And some of the areas, some of the soft target areas, its really hard to protect. As we say in free and open society. And sadly there are going to be incidents like this. Should not be but going to be. Just so much that you can do. Really is, and unfortunately security and safety is biltd on these things, as juliette said you learn from each event and each makes security bem better. But youre giving up freedom, having soft areas. People complaining about the time through security lines, all freedoms given up in the sake of security and famous quote is those who think you can give up freedom to get security will have neither. So we have to be cautious all the time. Comes down to personal vigilance and ability to understand our own safety and how we might be affe affecting others but so tragic to find a place to hide and no idea where its coming from and how many shooters there were. Traumatic time for folks. Bobby were getting new details about the suspect. Heard voices telling him to join isis, teeld the fbi about it. Iraq war veteran and discharged for unsatisfactory. Is this ptsd . Im not expert in that but sounds like lingering issues could have been exacerbated by military service. Hard to say. Definitely had Mental Health issues and fbi office in anchorage seems to have referred him to the proper authorities there, fbi doesnt have jurisdiction in tohese issues. What happened there, that will be interesting, i always like to know about the status of the Mental Health facilities and what we do with people and all of that. Theyre into the ruling out terrorism, investigating to see if it is in fact that. People want to go out in blaze of glory but this suspect taken into custody without incident. Does that tell you anything . Didnt do suicide by cop which we often refer to. No demonstration of terrorist activity and terrorists dont normally walk into the fbi office and tell them im thinking of becoming a terrorism. I dont think its terrorism in the traditional sense, by definition of the word possibly but i think it was isolated event by mentally unstable individual. Meaning islamic terrorism or jihad. Thats right. So stewart talk about what investigators are doing right now. Its all motive, why, why, why. What are they doing . Right now its exhaustive search to try to connect the dots. Keep in mind the magnitude and mass of evidence now left behind by the carnage, forensic evidence, just trying to consider how many eyewitnesses have to be interviewed is undaunting and every time it leads to another dot in the equation to connect all the dots, this is going to be an investigation thats going to take many days if not weeks if not months to finally put together the complete puzzle. Keep in mind this is one of the unique scenarios where we have someone in custody that is going to face judicial process and going to be prosecuted. We cant forget the evidence thats going to have to be put forward to secure a conviction in this case. I know it sounds ridiculous but keep in mind hes afforded due process rights. So local and federal Law Enforcement want to make sure get enough evidence to ensure a conviction or plea of guilty to go to jail for rest of his life. Thats the american system. Due process. Continuing to look at live pictures. What are the investigators looking at now . Weve talked about everything. Theyre peeling back this individuals life and getting under his skin and trying to figure out exactly what the motivation was, was there anybody out there to help him. But stuart is correct. Usually dont have live perpetrator so they have to take the time to put the evidence together for presentation in court. Takes a lot of time. You have to make sure to dot the is and cross the ts and get the search warrants. Theres a lot going into the investigation. Eventually well see this individual come to trial. Another key point don, on the after action side, when i first saw this occurring, i was wondering why they didnt shut down the whole airport. I know this incident doccurred t one particular terminal but we heard the witness talk about getting texts about what was going on and they turned out to be incorrect. Snapchat and all the social immedia media texting between terminals and had a false positive reaction to possible shooter in the garage area which pulled Law Enforcement away from the active crime scene. This is one of the things we have to look at in large venues that hold a lot of people, should they shut down whole thing and get people out of there . Weigh in quickly. Put this picture up. Picture of the suspected shooter. There he is. Esteban santiago. And people have been reading into his finger and that. Art what does this say to you if anything . Could be some peripheral involvement here with terrorist group. Its hard to say right now. But definitely iekological issues. And psychological issues and terrorist acts not mutually exclusive. We tend to put something in a particular bucket to label it. This is this. But one is not mutually exclusive of the other. I think well find terrorism was peripheral issue but this individual this psychological issues. We tend to think of isis directed, Something Like paris, isis planned or inspired attacked like people inspired online or told to do something. And then theres third category. We dont know if were there with this case but isis justified. Someone has a lot going on, mental illness, other issues, propensity towards violence. And isis becomes thing they will grab on to. They will be scrubbing his social Media Presence right now to determine if there was direct contact or if he was passive participant, seeing things online or on Television Shows that gives him justification for a violent act. Well have more on the deadly rampage shooting in ft. Lauderdale next. But next, intelligence agencies concluding that russians ordered the hacking of americas election. But then i realized there was. So, i finally broke the silence with my doctor about what i was experiencing. He said humira is for people like me who have tried other medications but still experience the symptoms of moderate to severe crohns disease. In clinical studies, the majority of patients on humira saw significant symptom relief. And many achieved remission. Humira can lower your ability to fight infections, including tuberculosis. Give yourself some credit. North americas intelligence agencies concluding in report out today that russian president Vladimir Putin, directly ordered campaign to influence the u. S. Election. Bring in jim sciutto and bob baer. Jim you first. Today president elect donald trump received briefing on the russian hacking. What are the key findings . The headline issue here delivered in stark terms by the most Senior Intelligence officials in the country, directly facetoface with donald trump, russia interfered in the election, the intent being to help you mr. Trump win the election. Thats the headline finding of this report. We knew that before but this has been released and see in the starkest terms. Thats one. Second, the cyberattacks targeted both parties, democrats and republicans but the releases of the stolen information only targeted one of those parties. Thats the democrats, democratic candidate hillary clinton, and effort finds the u. S. Intelligence community, to denigrate her and reduce her chances of winning and increase Donald Trumps chances of winning the presidency. Bob to you now. Intl intel chiefs say they have high confidence but donald trump said today while these are consistently trying to break through the infrastructure, including the Democratic National committee there was no effect on the voting and no at the moment pirg with the Voting Machines but the report says they didnt make that assessment. U. S. Intelligence community is charged with man tiring and assessing the actions of foreign actors but not analyzing u. S. Processes and public opinion. Why would he put that statement out . Don this report, this assessment is more than assessment, frankly never seen anything stronger, more conclusive than the japanese attacked pearl harbor, just said this happened. We can trace it. Left little or no doubt. And trump understands the implications of this, russians may have helped him to win the presidency. I cant read it any other way. And youre right, the Intelligence Community is not going to assess how much effect this russian covert action had on the elections. They cant. Cia doesnt have the ability, neither does the fbi. But i think this report undermines the legitimacy of the trump presidency. He knows it, thats why talking about the chinese and iranians and all these people. Hes trying to deflect the implications but i think its devastating for him. Jim do you agree . Think it june mines the legitimacy of the presidency . Its not a judgment for me to make. I can read from his comments from his perspective he believes it raises questions and apparently from his perspective unfairly does so about the legitimacy of his win. But interesting just in the last few minutes saw donald trump tweet again, this time taking aim, in effect blaming the Democratic Party for this. Saying gross negligence by the Democratic National committee allowed hacking to take place. Republican National Committee had strong defense. This is spin its not the truth. Rnc was hacked as well. Its misleading. What the report found is both parties were targeted. We previously reported that republican lawmakers were successfully hacked, think tanks and thought leaders and party organizations. We know that republican organizations and individuals were successfully hacked and we know that only one tranche of information was released to the public, that of the democrats. Thats a key finding thats one thing that led the Intelligence Community to conclude that the intention was to damage the democrats and help the republicans. I think don we have to stop expecting an honest conversation about this from the president elect. Because his point of view appears to be that it is unfairly undermining his victory. But as bob says, its very rare that you have the Intelligence Community say stuff with this level of certainty. Intelligence by its nature is nuanced and often hear qualifiers and alternative minority reports as it were. This didnt have it. Came out and said this happened. Dnc was hacked, rnc wasnt but republicans were hacked but didnt release the information to americans for republicans. Get that right. Bob, give us the button. What is the takeaway . This was an act of war. I agree with mccain. Its continuing apparently. And what are we going to do about it . Its now up to trump. Theres no point going after his presidency based on this. He is going to be the president of the United States. What he needs to do is sit down and figure out how we get this stopped and if need be retaliate against russia with covert action. This cannot stand as it is, and i look to trump for leadership on this to go after putin. Thank you gentlemen. Appreciate it. President elect donald trump met for over an hour today with this countrys intelligence chiefs but he doesnt seem to be buying their conclusion that Vladimir Putin ordered russian hacking. Here to discuss Timothy Naftali staff wriert and cnn contributor and douglas brinkley. Start with you. Russian hacking report pointed finger straight at russian Vladimir Putin for hacking but donald trump isnt going there. What do you make of his response . Well that is he is very worried hell be seen as illegitimate accidental president and at all costs doesnt want that. Hes in denial mode. All he can be. Inauguration day cant come quickly enough to put this behind him. Today made a positive step saying once hes president hes going to do huge cyber review of cyberwar and tactics going on. But hes like insect in jar right now shook up on this issue. Hes afraid if he says yes russia did that, delegitimizing him in some way. Timothy most find it it alarming that decades long enemy doing this. He hasnt even condemned it. If you were president elect, wouldnt you say i really want to know the truth regardless of what it means. Im still president of the United States. He put himself in a box by denigrating the intelligence before he even read it. Right now he would have to admit that he was impulsive and doesnt want to admit it. Guess what, not having another election, hes going to be president no matter what the report finds. Don, don, one of the things fascinating about president ial history, you come across president s who have won who are still insecure. Donald trump is not the first. But his Statement Today was amazing. Starts by saying that russia, china, other states, individuals, may have hacked. Doesnt even admit the basic argument of the report that russia had a systematic approach to influencing our election. His denial is huge. Huge. So im wondering, does this fit a pattern for donald trump, whether its business, his children, never backs down or admits hes wrong emily. Thats true. Think it has a lot to do with the insecurity. If you have nothing to hide here you say sure, check everything, check it all, i won, i definitely deserve to be in this position, you dont sit there defensively denying things or go on the offense. Look at what he tweeted this morning with the apprentice stuff. Incoming president of the United States two weeks from inauguration feel the need to tweet with ratings for a show youre not connected with anymore except as ap. If hes worried about asterisk next to his name about president , wouldnt you be more worried about tweeting about the apprentice, at least possible hacking as heft to it. Involves National Security, history books will be crueler for that than stance on russian hacking. Am i wrong douglas . He does frivolous tweets all the time. Im afraid well get a regular diet of it. But this is a big moment in American History what putin has done to try to interfere with the american election. Its gigantic, and trump doesnt have a good position. He should to what youre suggesting, step out, ive now looked at intelligence and it is russian fingerprints and going to get to the bottom of this and become more ardent. Looking a bit like a fool to put it mildly. But he does know the media cycle at cnn and elsewhere, we may forget about it in one or two months, so often he tries to buy time knowing that people will lose interest in the story at some junction. No when he has press conference well all come out. Need nt worry about that. Yes. Hit the press conference but now have inaugural coverage and all the new Supreme Court justice picks and cabinet appointments and going to be raining news. And terror attacks and world at large problems that he thinks eventually this story might become old hat and people wont remember it. Weve got four years but go on. Hes going to have to have a policy about russia and moment he says putins name, going to come back. And he was adamant, no effect on the outcome of the election, including no tampering whatsoever with Voting Machines. No one said that. In fact what the report actually says, ive been reading it all evening, and its been to be kind or not exactly the truth to be kind. We did not make assessment of the impact, this is from the report, that russian activities had on the outcome of the 2016 electionment the u. S. Intelligence community is charged with monitoring and assessing the intentions, capabilities and actions of foreign actors, it doesnt analyze u. S. Political processes or u. S. Public opinion. It has not said whether or not there was an esktd on the outcome. Thats according to the report and i read it. He keeps saying that its not. Why is he telling this lie . We could ask that about any number of things that happened throughout the campaign. Donald trump has a different relationship to the truth than maybe you or i have. He lives in factfree universe and its extension of the behavior weve seen for 18 months now. Look, he doesnt understand what the u. S. Intelligence community does. Of course doesnt analyze our own leksz. Would be in violation of the law. Fact of the matter is he has managed to pursue his own agenda successfully despite all the odds and predictions and he figures he can get away with it. Thats the only explanation i can have for the fact that he came out with a statement that said things about the report that werent true. He has gotten away with it. He gets away with a lot of things that people ordinarily wouldnt be able to get away with. Associated press, donald trump spoke with him about the meeting. It was a really great meeting. I really liked those people a lot. I learned a lot and i think they did also. What did you do on your Summer Vacation . I had fun in the summer. It was a great summer. I liked everybody a lot. What do you make of that . Hes trying to say im not anticia, or antiintelligence, just suspicious of the obama crowd and going to have a new head of cia and National Security adviser and other intelligence will come. He doesnt like the wrap hes getting that hes opposed to the Intelligence Community and trying to heal it a little bit with mealymouthed language there. He said they learned something too. Think thats important. Thats typical donald trump right . He has to always be the center of attention, and believes that he taught them something today. Im afraid that what hes going to do is take this and say look im going to meet with putin, talk about it, do some cybersecurity pact with putin, go to mars with russia. I dont think hes backing away. I think he sees putin as collaborator. As president elect he has the right to change whatever relationship we have with putin. But anyway. President elect donald trump met with magazine editors who havent been his fans in the past. The same never quit attitude. Thats why i asked his doctor about onceaday namzaric. avo namzaric is approved for moderate to severe alzheimers disease in patients who are taking donepezil. The top editors at vanity fair, the new yorker, and vogue. Back with me now is timothy and james brinkley. Sounds like were back to the 90s. So he paid a visit to the editor in chief of vogue, ana wintor. Editor Grayden Carter from vanity fair. Carter by the way is the man who dubbed him shortfingered in 1998. What was this meeting about and have you heard how it went . The meeting was actually off the record and everyone in the meeting has stayed really tight lipped. I have no new information about what they talked about for you. But i know this is a meeting with the top editors at condi nast, the top digital editors. And donald came all the way down to the world trade center. Security was super tight and everyone had to use one entrance and the elevators were shut down for a period. Youre in that building . Yeah. So Grayden Carter dubbed him the shortfingered vul gainer and in 1998, hes Still Holding on to that . I think this is a man who cares deeply about whats written about him. This is something that he cares about. This you see this time and time again, where he reacts to what is said about him in the press and what is written about him in the press. Thats the kind of guy he is. And that gets him, what is written about him and what is said about him in the media. I was a senior in college then and i cant even remember, you know, anyways. Thats why youre not thats why im not douglas, what were you going to say . Just, im a contributing editor at vante fair and i know grayden quite well and hes been in a real vicious feud with donald trump. And the problem that trump has is hes actually a consumer of cnn, as you know, ngoc times, and vanity fair and he likes saturday night live. And the fact that those four entities constantly seem to be, you know, punching him or criticizing him, it goads him, because he watches or reads those particular programs or periodicals. Its been great for vanity fair, is all i can say to you, is this attitude towards us has been great for subscriptions and great for traffic. So we welcome it. But the thing is that i think you realize, when there are certain institutions in society, that are touchstones in our iconic, cnn being one of them, vanity fair being one of them, and vogue, as well. And donald trump, you know, knows that. You know, no matter what he says about us, he knows. Why was it off the record . The old thats interesting. The way it used to be, these would be off the record before an election. So the editorial boards and newspapers could decide who to support. But its oafter the election. I could see it being off the record. But if youre going to meet with a news organization, that may be a little bit different. Do you disagree . Thats just the way it was set up. Soy hear that Grayden Carter and donald trump shook hands afterwards. Thats what the New York Post is reporting. Anyone surprised by that . I wonder if grayden is going to write an article about the hand shake, considering what he said. Well, thats right, don, grayden famously once took a picture of Donald Trumps hand and they had a mailing back and forth of how small trumps hands were. And trump took that photo and put it put his own hand in gold and mailed it to Grayden Carter. Grayden now regrets he didnt save it. So this donald trump has small hands thing has been an ongoing schmick between grayden and trump for a while. Thank you, appreciate it. Much more on our breaking news tonight.
