Sitting down with president barack obama behind closed doors at the white house tomorrow morning. That should be interesting. The campaigner in chief telling nbcs jimmy fallon this. My hope is, is that over the next couple of weeks, were able to pull things together, and what happens during primaries, you get a little ouchie. Everybody does. A little ouchie. Who better to talk about getting a little ouchie and other things than cnns mark preston and dana bash. Good evening to both of you. We miss you here in washington, d. C. , mark preston. But im going to start with you since youre the odd man out. Youre not in studio with dana and me here. Lets talk about Hillary Clinton and her historic night. We know she has called Bernie Sanders. She called last night. Whats her next step . A couple things. One, i do think that Hillary Clinton and her campaign has really deftly handled the Bernie Sanders situation very well over the last 48 hours. She was very gracious in her speech last night. She did reach out to his supporters. I think right now whats best for them is to step back, allow Bernie Sanders to get out of the race on his own doing. He is very committed to trying to allow the district of columbia, which votes next week that is actually the final contest have its say. There are a lot of supporters in the district of columbia that supported with their checkbooks. I think thats important. I also think that Bernie Sanders is going to be looking, don, for some influence over the platform. The Platform Committee for the Democratic National committee met for the first time today. I think that if Bernie Sanders is able to have some influence over that as well as having a significant speaking role at the convention, i think these are things that are all doable right now for Hillary Clinton. President barack obama weighed in on this race tonight with jimmy fallon. Take a look at this. Is bernie going to endorse hillary . Well, im sure theyre going to have a conversation. Is he ever going to drop out . Or hes going to stay in . Im going to be talking to him tomorrow. Hes going to be coming to the white house. The main role im going to be playing in this process is to remind the American People that this is a serious job. You know, this is not reality tv. Do you think the republicans are happy with their choice . Um, we are. But i dont know how [ laughter ] i dont know how theyre feeling. Actually, you know what . That was too easy. Sorry. The truth is actually i am worried about the Republican Party, and i know that sounds, you know yeah. You know what it sounds like. He really held his tongue there, but he stopped short of endorsing, mark, Hillary Clinton. But you can tell that he is ready to get out on the campaign trail, right . Yeah, theres no doubt he is. We could go all the way back to iowa where he virtually endorsed Hillary Clinton in an interview with politico at that time. I think that president barack obama had some very, very strong things to say about Hillary Clinton and how he was close to her. He hasnt officially come out and said it, but youre absolutely right. Whats interesting there too is he deftly dodged it when asked that question. He said hes going to focus on how talking about how important the job is. Clearly a jab at donald trump, who of course was a Reality Television star for many years. So, dana, lets talk about this meeting, shall we . I want to talk about hes smiling, whatever, there. Is he going to have a come to jesus with Bernie Sanders . Probably some version of one, yes. And, look, thats why Bernie SandersBernie Sanders knows whats coming, not just in the meeting hes going to have with the president tomorrow, but maybe more importantly or as importantly, in the meeting that he will have with the Senate Democratic leader, harry reid, whom he has worked with for decades now and knows very well. Maybe that could be a more candid conversation. But at the end of the day, to marks point, its the question of what do you need . What can we do . How can we help you so that you get behind Hillary Clinton and, more importantly, much more importantly, get your supporters actively, vocally say to your supporters, get behind her in a way that he seemed pretty reluctant to do last night even and especially after Hillary Clinton clearly got not just the superdelegates but the pledged delegates. Do you think he stands a chance to become her running mate at all just quickly because i want to get to this sound bite. Look, hes 74 years old. Theyve had a tough time, and at the end of the day, i think its highly unlikely. All right. Here is Hillary Clinton speaking to Anderson Cooper about a potential running mate. Listen to this. Im looking at the most qualified people, and that includes women, of course, because i want to be sure that whoever i pick could be president immediately if something were to happen. Thats the most important qualification. So if you have as high an ufr favorability number as both of our presumptive nominees here, the second person on the ticket, the v. P. , is a very important choice, correct . I think it is in that you dont want to pick somebody who is, you know, incredibly unpopular. Thats kind of a nobrainer. The last time historically it has mattered who a nominee put on the ticket was lbj. That was a long time ago. So, you know, i think certainly its do no harm, and as Hillary Clinton said, which we cannot lose sight of, can this person step into the presidency . But biden did help president obama. His choice helped. Look because similar criticism of donald trump. You want a complement. You want somebody who is going to complement the nominee. I mean look at what happened back in 1992. Everybody sort of took a step back when bill clinton picked al gore because it was like two peas in the same pod. I remember that. Everyone in the newsroom was calling it the cute ticket because they were so young. Right, because they were so young. But at the end of the day, it was a good moment and something that provided a real contrast with george h. W. Bush because it was the youth ticket. So certainly you want somebody who can complement. But i do think one thing i will say is that what she could do if she really sees that shes in trouble with getting the Bernie Sanders supporters behind her is pick somebody who is very clearly appealing to them because of their issue set. Donald trump stuck to his script last night. He was more toned down. Now is he promising an anticlinton speech next week. Is he getting the hint that he needs to stay on message here . Don, if i answer this question definitively, id be lying to you and to everyone who is watching tonight. We dont know. We dont know. Weve seen this play before. Heres the deal with donald trump. And to go back to what barack obama said when he was asked about having to face him in the general election, barack obama said, oh, were happy that were facing him. Thats actually not true. If you talk to democrats who are involved in the process, they would have preferred to run against someone like ted cruz because they knew the book. They dont have a playbook to run against donald trump right now, and donald trump is a very formidable general election candidate if hes able to stay to script. Now, earlier this evening, erin burnett interviewed mitch mcconnell, the Senate Minority leader. He said over and over again that donald trump would be better off if he stayed to the script and did not go off and say things that are controversial. And quite frankly, you know, can anger people because they are so out of the mainstream. Yeah, and speaking of that, i mean even members of his own party, they dont have a playbook for him as well. Theyre chastising hip. They want him to stick to script. Heres republican senator jeff flake. What he told my colleague, jake tapper. I can tell you we wont have any republican in the white house that takes these kind of positions and makes these kind of statements. To make the statements that he made about the judge, to espouse a muslim ban, to espouse the conspiracy theories that hes s espous espoused. Cant see that person winning the white house. Senator kirk of illinois retracted his endorsement yesterday. Do they have any leverage when it comes to donald trump . Sure, they have some leverage in that they he, donald trump, showed in his speech last night that he gets that hes got to be in some way, shape, or form a different kind of candidate. And he does care what the leadership and what elected officials in congress believe about him as that person. Do they believe that, though, from one speech . No, no. Absolutely not. I mean from the perspective of donald trump. Yeah. So, yeah, i mean i think that they have a bit more leverage than they did during the primaries. Okay. But not much. I just want to say one thing, let our viewers in on a little secret. You asked the right person to get into Donald Trumps head because you know who played donald trump during our debate. I was there. Mark preston. It was mark preston. I sat in on some of those debate mock debate practices, mark was really good. He did a great job. Thanks to both of you. I appreciate it. Mark, see you in person soon. Thank you. When we come back, a new more president ial donald trump weve been talking about here. But is that what his voter want, and can he keep it up . House Speaker Paul Ryan is calling on his republican colleagues to come together and unite behind donald trump. Lets discuss now. Matt lewis is here. Hes a cnn political commentator and a senior contributor to the daily caller. Seni senior, thats a big deal. Matt schlapp, a big deal as well. Last night we saw a more subdued donald trump. Lets take a listen. I understand the responsibility of carrying the mantle, and i will never, ever let you down. Too much work, too many people, blood, sweat, and tears. Never going to let you down. I will make you proud of your party and our movement. So i would venture a guess, matt, that this is the donald trump that people in washington wanted to see, right . The big leagues. Is that enough to quail the criticism . No. Look, were at a i think its a critical moment of the campaign for donald trump. I think he had a bad week, a terrible week, and i think the party and the Party Leaders want to see him back on message. Focused on why hes running for president , what his message is, and take on Hillary Clinton. And remind people Hillary Clinton has been involved in a series of scandals, and shes being investigated by the fbi as we speak. That is the donald trump that republicans want to see. So it is i mean they may be reassured by last night, but his supporters i dont think his supporters really liked it. I dont think he really liked it. Maybe you do. I likened it to when you see kids, right, having a tantrum in public and their legs fall out. Have you seen my children . I dont want to use a teleprompter, right . How many times have we seen him in crowds like mocking the president and mocking Hillary Clinton . Watch this. We dont want teleprompters, right . No teleprompters. We ought to have a law that if youre running for president , youre not allowed to use teleprompters. Its too easy. Look what we got the last time. We got a teleprompter guy. We dont need that. I dont do the teleprompter thing, which would be so easy. Wouldnt that be easy . I have two teleprompters. I watched hillary the other day. She has the biggest teleprompters ive ever seen. In fact, if youre sitting on that side of the room or that side of the room, you cant even see her because when theyre outside, theyre painted black, so you cant even see her. I mean teleprompters for trump now, and hes using them. Heres what he told time magazine, though. It was because he had a lot of detail in the speech. But if he keeps this up, do you think hes going to lose his appeal, the thing that makes him authentic . Thats where hes in a real bind right now because its a catch 22. So he can either be authentic and say stupid, controversial things, or he can be scripted and sound robotic and not be authentic. And so what does he do . And i think just clearly what he did last night did not work. It seemed awkward. Maybe he could get used to reading a teleprompter, but its a different skill set, and hes not used to it. Who are you telling . To make it seem like you are not reading, matt, schlapp, we know trump needs to expand his base. But the question is are people going to buy this new donald trump, this new more come on, there is nobody who has run for president who has been more off the cuff and more unscripted than donald trump. For these critical moments for him to actually go through a well thought out speech is the smart thing for him to do, and he ought to keep doing it. I think you know what his supporters love, and i am supporting hip. What his supporters love is he was back on message. He wasnt talking about this judge and the case and all these other things that are extraneous to the president ial campaign. He was talking about his message. If he stays on his message, hes got a chance in this race. If he repeats that performance he had last night for a week or two, then its really over for him. Hey, matt, no offense. When have you been right on donald trump . I wrote a book called too dumb to fail thats basically the definition of his campaign. Was that about donald trump, or was that about the party . You should read the book. In fact, i have read it and so has my wife. The point is this. Donald trump matches the times for our party in many ways, and i know people continue to be critical about how hes going about doing it. If he stays on message like he was throughout the primaries, he is going to be formidable for Hillary Clinton. You mentioned the judge, and you mentioned staying on point and all of that and keeping to message. But trump says that his republican colleagues need to, quote, get over it when it comes to his comments about judge curiel. Lets listen to that. Theres a lot of anxiety there. Theres a lot of you know, theres a lot of anger. I guess anger. They just cant come back. They cant get over it. So they have to get over it ideally. As to whether or not they endorse me, its okay if they dont. But they have to get over it. They shouldnt be so angry for so long. Do they have to get over it . I mean how long will he be able to continue to ignore it . Do they have to get over it . I think the problem is that donald trump keeps doing this. This isnt weve had a year of him basically picking fights with different types of people. And so i dont think this is an anomaly. I think this is whats going to be next . Whats the next shoe to drop . I think what id like donald trump and his campaign to understand is that voters move closer to you, and they move further away from you according to what you say and what you do. And there are all kinds of never trump people in the Republican Party who dont want to support him. But as they watch his campaign go forward, they could get closer to him. As a matter of fact, they could even, as we get closer to election day, they might pull that lever if they realize how bad a president Hillary Clinton will be. Its all about courting them. To my question, do they have to get over it . Absolutely not. People ought to follow their conscience and do what they think is right. If republicans thing the right thing to do is not support him, we ought to respect that and we ought to try to court them. What the Campaign Needs to do is court them. Theyve seen a president clinton and they didnt like it, don. They dont like the idea of Hillary Clinton being president and they have this krikcontradin inside their own brain where they might not like donald trump but they hate the idea of Hillary Clinton being present. You can see it happening inside them. Theyre saying his comment was racist. I dont appreciate it, whatever. But hes better than Hillary Clinton. I dont know how much sense that makes because it makes a lot of sense. Well, it doesnt make sense when youre the speaker of the house, and you can say, he said something racist, and im still endorsing him. He said something awful. But, you know, to still endorse it doesnt mean that if you dont support him, that you necessarily support Hillary Clinton, i guess. Yes, it does. In america, lets face it. We elect either democrats or republicans in america. And for all these people who have the fantasies or idea there will be a Third Party Person or gary johnson is going to be the president , get over it. Its illogical. Its either going to be donald trump or Hillary Clinton. The republican nominee or the democratic nominee it could be mitt romney. I wish mitt romney would just run because this pseudorunning in the background is really wearing us out. New york times is reporting donald trump aides are discussing ways to keep him focused and, quote, more president ial on the campaign trail over the next few weeks. One option they said is to have his children and his soninlaw with him more on the campaign trail. Someone with him at all times. I think he needs he needs supervision. Is that going to work . I would say ivanka, ivanka, ivanka. She needs to be everywhere. In fact, maybe we could find a way to make her run for president. Do we have video of ivanka behind him last night . And melania, right . Theyre basically but they looked like they were saying, please, just dont just dont go off script. Dont go off script. If you look at them, ivanka is like, dad, dont do it. You know, at some point, your kids do start, you know the roles reverse, right . Im looking forward to the days when my kids can, like, be my designated driver and take me to baseball games and i can behave like donald trump. I think his kids are his biggest asset. I think he ought to be out there with his family. I dont think its because he needs supervision. I think they bring out the best in him. If you have a wonderful family like that, you ought to showcase it. But also listen to him because all of them tell him to be more president ial. All of them say he doesnt listen to them when they tell him that. But thats the candor that people love. Oh, boy. He listens for 24 hours and then its like that matt, you just dont like the guy, do you . I dont like him, but its like the construction site with the sign, x number of days since the last major accident. Yeah. And how long can he stay on script . Hes like snapchat. It goes away in 24 hours. I thought you were talking about Hillary Clinton and scandals. Stay with me. Up next, Hillary Clinton wasting no time slamming trump, but will it work . To lifesaving medications. In fact, it kills. One hepatitis c pill. Cant get it. Thats obscene greed. They found out whos been hacking into our network. Who . Guess. I dont know, some kids in a basement . You watch too many movies. Who . A Small Business in china. A business . They work nine to five. They take lunch hours. Like a job . Like a job. We tracked them. How did we do that . We have some new guys defending our network. New guys . Well, theyre not that new. Theyve been defending things for a long time. [ digital typewriting ] its not just security. Its defense. Bae systems. Primary election season is over and now the countdown to the republican and Democratic Convention is next month, where the parties officially nominate their candidates. Back with me, matt and matt. Matt squared. Lewis and schlapp. Thats a good show right there, right . I like it. So the presumptive nominee of course is Hillary Clinton, wasting no time turning her attention right to donald trump. She sat down with our Anderson Cooper. She did an interview with Anderson Cooper today. Listen to this. And contrast that with donald trump, who set up a fake university, Trump University that committed fraud on people, who doesnt want to raise the minimum wage, who wants to go backwards when it comes to universal health care, who has proposed a tax plan that would just be great for billionaires and terrible for everybody else. So as we reach out and we talk about whats at stake in this election, i really believe a lot of senator sanders supporters will join us in making sure donald trump doesnt get anywhere near the white house. So it looks like shes finding her footing when it comes to attacking trump, matt lewis, but do you think shes going to be successful where others have not been because no one has been able to penetrate that trump armor . The general electorate is dramatically different than the republican primary electorate. I think the media has shifted. I really do. Its hard to prove because its sort of like the definition of pornography, you know it when you see it. Stop right there. Yeah, i was like where are you going with that . Theres no doubt that you can find incidents of those of us in the media who have been hard on trump all along. But it does feel like in the past week, something has changed, and the scrutiny and the attention paid to donald trump doou think thats a general, or do you think its because of his comments, or what do you think . Well, i think there are a lot of conservatives who would say this is conspiratorial, that the media is liberal and that they sort of help prop up donald trump, this, you know, sort of flawed nominee. Once he gets the nomination essentially that is the biggest conspiracy theory. Come on. I dont buy that. I think its more organic. I think this is more a case of, you know, there were 17 candidates at one point. Trump now being essentially the nominee, it makes sense to focus. But look, the Washington Post has like 20 reporters covering him. Theres going to be a lot of stuff thats going to come out. Also theres something shiny, right . What does this guy have to say . After a while, hes serious, he is the presumptive nominee. Now he must be vetted like every other it would have been awesome if they did this back in january. Im not one that blames the press and bashes the press for their treatment of donald trump. The bottom line is i think the more scrutiny and the more time these candidates have on shows like this, i think its a positive thing. And i think the American People are smart, and they gave donald trump the most votes of any republican who has ever run in the primary. And for Hillary Clinton, in the interview shes had today, to say shes going to run an issuebased campaign, and the next thing out of her mouth is that he is fundamentally unfit to be the president of the United States, he perpetrated a fraud with Trump University, i mean she is on message. Its about issues, and those issues are all about attacks on donald trump. So this is going to be one humdinger of a campaign where they both go after each other. Its just the beginning. I give the edge to trump in that kind of a fight. Hes good at this. Shes not. You remember last night in his speech, he said im going to give a speech on Hillary Clinton, talk all about her and her husband and their dealings. So we have to get to that. But lets talk about this was scathing. Calling out a number of republicans who have been standing by trump in the new york times. Heres what he said. He said, et tu, john mccain. You didnt break under torture from the north vietnamese, but your hunger for reelection is so great that you dont dare raise your voice against trump . I hope you lose. You deserve to. Marco rubio, you called trump a con man. He insulted your very being and you endorse him. Chris christie, have you not an ounce of selfrespect . Youre serving as a valet to a man who claimed faullsely on 9 in jersey city, thousands and thousands of people were cheering as that building was coming down. Christie is backing a man who made up a boldfaced lie about residents of his own state so that maybe he can be his vice president. Contemptible. What do you guys think of these examples . I think going after john mccain was a pretty scummy thing to do. Otherwise, i think theres some valid donald trump did say some pretty nasty things about john mccain. I would have probably edited that part out. But i dont have a pulitzer prize. I think the larger point he makes is valid. I mean republicans right now are having to choose between, you know donald trump puts them in a bind. I mean on one hand you could certainly make the argument that Hillary Clinton is going to appoint three Lifetime Supreme Court justice whos are going to radically change for a generation america. And so you have to be a good partisan soldier and just sort of go with the nominee, you know, the public has spoken. The bastards, lets go with the republican nominee. But the other side is principle and character, and donald trump has said things that ought to be disqualifying. First of all, to Thomas Freeman to write about giving advice to the conservative movement i think is pretty much absurd. Basically hes saying the Republican Party should start over. He says the grand old party needs a grand new party. What hed like is for donald trump to lose and Hillary Clinton to win. But hes trying to exploit the situation to his own benefit. By the way, don, while theyre still in the midst of a complete civil war where poll after poll shows that up to 30 of Bernie Sanders supporters dont want to support Hillary Clinton. New York Daily News says to paul ryan. Shameful. I dont think this influences them. Im with racist . Look, i do think that heres the problem. So conservatives for my whole lifetime and longer than that have had this problem where they have been attacked for being racist. And i think most of those attacks have been unfair, and we have seen many, many examples where people but this time . This time theres some validity to it. The problem is do you have this sort of muscle memory reflex that says this is what the left calls real mainstream conservatives. We must defend our guy. Or do you actually say, you know, some of this stuff is at the very minimum race baiting. I have to run, but how do you defend that . How do you defend that comment . How do you defend the comment about the judge . I dont defend the comment about the judge. You think it was a racist comment . I think it was incredibly disparaging. You think it was a racist comment . I think he ment it against the judge. I dont think. Answer my question directly. I dont think it was an attack on mexicans. I think he was incredibly inartful. I think he used terrible terminology. Why wont you say that . Because i think injecting race cavalierly into politics is a disaster. But why doesnt he say it was inartful . I dont have to own everything he says, don. Im going to vote for him. No. Im asking you why doesnt he say that . He wont apologize. He wont address it. All he would have to do for many people is to say, i miss spoke. My advice would be to ruse words like that. But i think all he meant is this judge is a bad judge and i think this judge has given me a bad deal. If thats what his comments were aimed at, hes got a right to make those comments. Thank you very much. Coming up, Hillary Clinton made history last night, so why is Bernie Sanders insisting hell stay in the race . Every ingredient is the main ingredient. Whether its big. Or small. First to go. Or best for last. Sweet. Or not so sweet. Whether its tossed. Or twirled. If its easy prey. Or plays hard to get. Every last crunch, sprinkle and drip. Should be as clean as it is delicious. Panera. Food as it should be. The struggle continues. Thats what Bernie Sanders told his cheering supporters last night, late last night really in a speech that was definitely not a concession to presumptive nominee Hillary Clinton. Joining me now, kayleigh mcen y mcena mcenany, bob cusack, editor in chief of the hill, Maria Cardona, and cnn political commentator bob beckel. Hi, bob, how are you . Hi, don. Hello, everyone. Then we have kayleigh in another location. Theres really going to be conspiracy theories all over social media right now. No conspiracy here. No conspiracy. You just happen to be in new york for election coverage. So, maria, despite a disappointing evening last night, Bernie Sanders vowed to continue campaigning through the convention. Is getting out the right thing for him to do at this point, you think . I think that day will come. Its not going to be tonight. Its not going to be tomorrow. Probably not going to be the day after tomorrow. But should he get out now, you think, or should he have conceded last night . I think he needs to do this in a way that will bring his supporters along, and, you know, a lot of people do believe that he should get out. I mean it wasnt close, right . She won by quite a large margin in terms of states delegates and raw votes. But lets be real and i can say this from personal experience because i was a supporter from Hillary Clinton the last time around. She got out. Yes, but not immediately. It was tough. It was really hard. Its heartwrenching. You have to go through a period of mourning. I think he deserves this time. His supporters deserve this time. We need to come out of philly united. Hes got to go through the stages. I forget how many. Bob cusack, is he coming off as an angry guy who lost the primary and well, it is a tough loss, no doubt about it. But, you know, on saturday he said theres going to be a contested convention. And now then he talked to president obama. I think obama has handled this very well. Hes really dialed it back, and i think d. C. Is going to vote next tuesday, and then right after that, hes going to get out. Bernie sanders is, what, 74 years old. Hes been in politics a long time. Quite a long time. Hes a big boy. Yeah. Come on. I mean but he also wants to get the concessions. Lets keep a couple things in mind. It is tough to lose, and when Hillary Clinton conceded, just remember that most of her base of support was democrat. In his case, its democrat and independents. And to bring them along for Hillary Clinton, the democrat also fall in line. I dont know of a contested race where you ask the supporters of the loser they come around. In bernies case, hes got a lot of young, independent voters. Thats going to take a little time. Look, its worth a week or two or three weeks to build it up right. Plus the fact obama is going to say to him on thursday, look, bernie, lets try to figure out dont read ahead in the textbook, bob. I mean i asked earlier, dana bash, if they were going to have a come to jesus, and i think most people think youre right. Kayleigh, clinton congratulated sanders on an extraordinary campaign. Would you have liked to see Bernie Sanders acknowledge clintons historic victory last night as well . I think he did shortly into the speech. He doesnt want to concede theres a victory because he still thinks hes in this. I think hes in this maybe not in terms of getting pledged delegates. I thought he handled it well. I think he created a movement. Hes very passionate about that movement. Hes very authentic when it comes to supporting that movement so he did just what he should. I want to point out the real irony here that when donald trump, it appeared he was going to be short of the 1,237 delegates, however he would win the popular vote, everyone was saying, these are the rules. The rules are such that it doesnt happen till the convention, till enough delegates get on your side. Bernie sanders is technically in the exact same situation. Hes lost the popular vote, but technically it does not end until people vote on the day of the convention. Were not having the same discussion i think its different in that we were saying 1,237. When donald trump got to the 1,237 it was done. We said presumptive nominee. No one said, oh, hes not the presumptive nominee. Its going to go all the way to the convention. They said thats what everyone is saying, and all of his other opponents said byebye, go and have it. Bernie sanders is not saying that. As a matter of fact, i want to play something from this is Jeffrey Toobin earlier today regarding Bernie Sanders. She won. I mean, you know, all this talk about Bernie Sanders and how nice you have to be. You know, theres a word for what happened to Bernie Sanders. He lost. You know, and the idea that she has to spend the next several weeks, you know, coddling him and being nice to him, you know, someone is going to say to him maybe the president of the United States on thursday, maybe harry reid when he sees him cut the you know what. You want donald trump to be president . Then fine. Go be off in a petulant snit. But i dont think Bernie Sanders wants donald trump to be president , and i think this incredible sort of coddling and worrying about Bernie Sanders is just outrageous. He ought to just get in line just like Hillary Clinton did eight years ago. Maria, i was getting dressed to come in here, and i watched that, and i said, go Jeffrey Toobin, not because of any affinity for Hillary Clinton or Bernie Sanders. Its because thats how we operate in the real world. When i go into my bosss office, he says, stop it. Right. This is whats happening. If you dont like it, you know what you can do. Thats how it works in the real world, correct . Am i wrong . Thats right. Absolutely. I would love to be a fly on the wall in the meeting tomorrow with president obama and Bernie Sanders. But is he right . Well, hes right in the context that he did lose. But where i think we have to sort of broaden out the context is that the coddling is not of Bernie Sanders, right . Hillary clinton and the democrats are not doing this for Bernie Sanders. For the voters. Theyre doing this for his supporters, acknowledging that his supporters are important. They are an important part of the obama coalition. We want to do this in a manner where they feel like Hillary Clinton is also going to be fighting for them. We cant disparage that. I dont think that would be good for the party. At the end of the day, we have to be strong to focus on defeating ive got to come back for both of you. A question, and im going to let you answer this question on the other side of the break as it relates to this, all right . So stand by for that. Well be right back. Dont go anywhere, anyone. Dont tour tokyo. And please, dont do tokyo. Live in tokyo. Airbnb a place in shinagawa, or a loft in ebisu. Try toro. Try this. Be polite and slurp. Have yoshi tell you about the time he rode an ostrich. Act like youve done this before. Wherever you go. Dont go there. Live there. Even if its just for a night. Weinto a new american century. Born with a hunger to fly and a passion to build something better. And what an amazing time its been, decade after decade of innovation, inspiration and wonder. So, we say thank you america for a century of trust, for the privilege of flying higher and higher, together. Were going to talk about the electoral map. Because it takes 270 electoral votes to make it to the white house, okay . There you go. 270 electoral votes to make it to the white house. What does that path look like for donald trump . Back with me now, kayleigh inco mcenany, bob cusack, Maria Cardona and bob beckel. Kayleigh, you remember when we all had these big panels and we were talking about the sanders people and whether Bernie Sanders was setting his people up with false expectations because months ago, people were saying that it was virtually impossible. The math just wasnt there. Bernie sanders just kept going on and on and on, and saying, we can do it. Were going to do it. Were going to do it. And now look what happened. So what happened last night, whose fault is it . Is it Bernie Sanders fault for setting up false expectations . I think theres certainly part of that. Ive talked about this before. People didnt want to hear this. They were saying you guys in the media are just exactly. But youre reading the map that you read every election cycle. As a clinton supporter, i was attacked by all these bernie supporters because they were saying that, you know, the system was rigged. And thats another thing that i think is not healthy for the process. You know, when Bernie Sanders talks about a rigged system, he is talking about hes talking down the Democratic Party, and the Democratic Party infrastructure. He hasnt talked about that as much lately, which i think is great. But i think when he does finally come out and say, look, people, we have to figure out how we come together because the last thing we want to do is give an opportunity for donald trump to step foot in the white house. Hes going to have to talk about how Hillary Clinton won this fair and square. All right. But, kayleigh, what was different about it when it came to donald trump saying, you know, we can make it even though everyone is saying its going to be a contested convention. Is that at that point donald trump was the frontrunner. Bernie sanders was not the frontrunner when he was giving people these expectations. But heres the thing. Hillary clinton does not have 2,383 delegates until the convention. The pledged delegates do not get her over the line. Theoretically if shes, lets say, indicted tomorrow, its not going to happen. Lets say it happens tomorrow. There is a theoretical chance Bernie Sanders could be the nominee, and when all of the people stop right there. Theres a very easy solution for that. If Bernie Sanders said and this is what i thought was going to happen last night, and most people thought was going to happen last night. We have fought a great fight. We have a movement. Its a revolution. We still have a very strong voice. Were going to have a voice at the convention. We have set up a platform for the Democratic Party. But i need you to get behind me because we dont want donald trump in the white house. Or im going to suspend my campaign and we need to get behind Hillary Clinton who won fair and square. So i thought i think hell do that next week when its done, when the voting is done. So hang on, bob. So, kayleigh, ill let you finish your point. There was a solution for that. All he has to do is say i suspended my campaign. If she gets indicted, he goes here i am, im your knight in shining arm. Im back. This is much bigger than all of that for Bernie Sanders because hes felt slighted from the very beginning in this process. When this process began, Hillary Clinton had 495 delegates behind her before a Single Person voted. It was 495 to zero. Moreover, you look at the dnc debate schedule. They had six debates in contrast to eight years ago where they had 28 debates. They felt slighted from the beginning. When van jones points out this is a process that needs to be addressed in addition to policies, i think thats as much of the slight that Bernie Sanders feels. He feels it pligmight have been different had the process been set up in a way that was fair from the beginning. Bob beckel. Bernie sanders has not been a democrat. Its only been the last year. He has no loyalty to the Democratic Party. Hes not with the Democratic Party. He has no nationwide fundraising base. Heres a guy from a little state in vermont who everybody laughed at when he started, sort of like donald trump, and all of a sudden the guy is out there getting these huge numbers. It is very difficult when youre in a president ial race believe me, its difficult to get a candidate to finally concede that its over. Who was it who said, did he just hand the race over to donald trump . Who was that who said it . Im not sure. The head of the dnc. Howard dean. He asked that question if he just handed it over. I think Bernie Sanders has to get some policy stuff. He has said that he needs to get policy on fracking, on minimum wage, or the supporters hes not going to be able to just snap his fingers and his supporters are going to back Hillary Clinton. I think this is a process. I think they will get there. But at the same time, there has to be these discussions. There has to be a deal between hillary and bernie. We started this by saying 270, you know, electoral votes. Thats what you need to get to the white house. Its not going to be as easy for donald trump as they might think it is, right . Especially when it comes to the demographics. Are you concerned about that, Kayleigh Mcenany . Im not concerned because unlike the 16 candidates who stood alongside him on the stage, donald trump is someone who appeals to some of these rust belt states, some of these places where manufacturing jobs have been obliterated. He puts into play states like pennsylvania. He listed the 15 states he thinks he can turn. I think that thats beared out by polling. The quinnipiac poll showed him winning in ohio just yesterday. The florida poll shows him up by one. How many of these blue states he think he can turn red . I think he could turn five or six red, which if theyre the right states, it could be enough to win. I think he is a very strong candidate. But thats going to mean, don, turning to the issues and really painting a policy contrast. Here is where Hillary Clinton and i differ on jobs and on foreign policy. So i think he does need to move in that direction, and i think well start to see that. Do you think its realistic that he can turn five or six states, any of you . No, absolutely not. From blue to red. California and new york, if he thinks he can turn those states red, i think hes drinking too much the general is about addition, and even people in his own party are saying so far, except for the speech last night, this is not about addition. This is about subtraction because hes not speaking to a general. Lets cut through this stuff about Blue Collar Workers in pennsylvania and ohio. Theyve been discounted a long time ago. Theyve been with the Republican Party and there are not enough of them. Hell be lucky hell be lucky to hold on to even the base my only fear right now is somehow they figure out a way to get rid of trump before the convention. Thats my fear. And these white collar because hes going to lose republican states. He is going to lose republican states. Bob cusack, youve got to jump in there. I think antitrade message, hes got to shot to in some of these states. Theres one poll in utah hes up by three. In these rust belt states, shes actually ahead. She is ahead. So that argument doesnt hold any water. Thank you, everyone. Thank you, kayleigh in new york. See you soon in person. Appreciate you joining us.
