He is a nice guy. I have a lot of good relationships you wouldnt even believe. And last night standing on that stage people you think we dont get along with, we have some pretty good relationships. It would be surprising to people. So athena, donald trump being so nice right there. Was he that nice at the debate last night . It is interesting to hear him say such kind words about his rivals. I guess we did see a somewhat nicer donald trump. It because was a substantive and policy driven debate. We didnt hear as many personal attacks. But he still get digs in. He seemed to suggest that governor kasichs success came from the oil industry. He also seemed to be taunting governor bush when he said let jeb speak. While we saw a kinder, gentler trump, he was still trump. You have been with jeb bush all day. How does he think he did last night . He felt like he did well. I talked about that this morning [ inaudible ] with those longer response times. Yeah. I thought it was fine. I did well. Talked about issues that are important to people. We have to think about who is the person that can beat Hillary Clinton rather than small differences between each campaign. Joining me now, hugh hewitt. I know that title by heart now. I have seen you everywhere. On this show, on the sunday shows. I know you were watching closely. Who are the winners and the losers . The big two winners are marco rubio and ted cruz i dont want to forget Chris Christie. And i dont want to overlook benefit of the sharpest jabs at Hillary Clinton and great breaks. When they go to break after a great answer that allows twitter to explode with a lot of affirmations. Lets talk about minimum wage and immigration. They were front and center. Lets listen to jeb bushs response to the exchange that they had about Illegal Immigrants. What happened to my question . Im going to have my back. First of all governor you should let jeb speak. Thank you, donald for letting me speak at the debate. Really nice of you. What a generous man you are. 12 million Illegal Immigrants, to send them back, 500,000 a month is just not possible. What do you make of that dynamic between the three candidates there . It was a great exchange. The only misstep i thought among the debate panelists was gerard baker. He is an old bbc hand. He ought to have let that gone on a little more. Because trump and cruise cruz tag teaming kasich and bush. I was fwluglued to my tv set. But jeb bush had great moments using humor. And i talked to him on my friday radio show. I want to know, clintons team says they were high fiving last night. Do you think they are right when they talk about deporting the illegals who are already here . I think its interesting. Kasich and bush are right that how you talk about this is very important. And ted cruz is importantly hitting the note we have to be a rule of law nation. And donald trump won that round. This is a complicated, very, very interesting issue for 2016 that i think will go through a few iterations. But heres what they were not high fiving about last night. A number of the candidates took direct aim at hillarys foreign policy. And that trailer for 13 hours, the michael bay movie, that is devastating for Hillary Clinton. I think that the loser, i wrote this for cnn opinion this morning, hillary was the loser last night because she looked at that stage and she said i dont want to face a half dozen or seven or eight of these people. They will take me to pieces. Let me read part of your column. She was mentioned 25 times last night. But you said hillary is every republicans target. Thought by many rank and file average americans to be protected by the media and a dreadful candidates 25 years or more older than her possible competitors. Do you think their ages are significant . We see the inversion of 2008. 2008 an old but serious john mccain was blown out by barack obama because americans assess president ial candidates on a variety of basis one of them who can be in my living room for four or eight years and president obama won that over senator mccain. If you Flash Forward and you have marco rubio or ted cruz up against Hillary Clinton, Hillary Clinton is afraid of that matchup. Lets talk about the democrats without the republicans. Talk about what you think is going to happen at the democratic debate . I think they will have a tough time for the hillary and bernie show. Its not very interesting. She is 68 and he is 71. They are living in the 70s. People dont know that they Chris Christie last night talked about the cyberattacks that china launched against us. Im not an ageist but i think that marco rubio pointed out were in a generational change election where a lot of people have grown up in a mobile world which is completely social media drenched. He went on about china and the tpp and the trade agreement and how they exploited it so much and all that. And paul looked down stage and said, don, chinas not in that trade agreement. That agreement is put together because of china and it shows that he has no substance whatsoever. But hes good. I wont take that away from him. But he is not going to be able to get away with this Bumper Sticker mentality for the rest of the campaign. Are you referring to last night, you said it exposed the split between right wingers and the establishment. How is that . What do you mean by that . That split has been getting bigger and bigger all the time. It goes back to barry goldwater. What it means is that if you take the 15 lets take immigration for a second. The Commerce Department that ted cruz wants to do away with twice, you look at the people who take these jobs who are undocumented workers they are not taking jobs of people in the United States. They are getting 6, 7 an hour. Im going to have Michelle Malcolm on and she will beg to differ with you. Nothing new about that. But truth be told they like Illegal Immigrants. So does jeb bush. In texas, no one argued about it. They came in, did the picking and left. Mindy, do you agree that Illegal Immigrants are not taking these jobs . I think that marco rubio had one of the best lines on this yesterday. The issue, if you are somebody who really needs a job, ted cruz had a good point too and you are having trouble finding a job, you believe that Illegal Immigrants are taking those jumps. There are two sides to the story there. But in some states, i mean, there is a real feeling among the population that are struggling to find jobs and they are citizens and they are seeing the trouble with immigration in terms of crime. Did you see, bob cusack that this immigration issue would play such a role in the campaign for the republicans . Yes, absolutely. Because it played a huge role in 2008. Mitt romney moved way to the right on immigration and went after rick perry. That is part of the reason he won the republican nomination and for some reason didnt move back to the middle for the general election. Part of the reason he lost and lost kind of big. So its not a surprise. The minimum wage, carson said a few months ago that he supported raising the minimum wage. I think it was a win for rubio and cruz. And Establishment Republicans dont want trump, carson or cruz. They are starting to think that rubio is our hope. Because there are so many doubts about jeb bush. And what about ben carson . I think he had an okay night. I also think trump had his weakest debate but nothing i think is going to be plummeting his numbers or carsons. I think you get a bounce for rubio and you are going to get a bounce for cruz. The senators are going well in this race, the former governors, not so much. Mindy, do you think that ben carson proved he can be president last night . No. I dont think it was a terrible debate for him. But it was a meh debate. The other candidates didnt really attack him. They dont see him as a threat, as someone who will go the distance. You know, i think rubio did get a ten. I would put cruz and fiorina at a nine. I think the thing we have to remember though is this is not political gymnastics based on content and style, it is the popular vote and the popular vote, trump and carson continue to do well. The consensus is that rubio did well last night. This is a new superpac ad from rubio. A world gone out of control and getting worse. A shaky economy leaves millions behind while washington, d. C. And wall street are doing just fine and they wonder why were angry. So when we started to make this ad we had to decide which conservative candidate for president to support. Ted cruz . Donald trump, a leader in business and media. Ben carson, world renowned neurosurgeon . Its a tough choice. So you know who we asked, Hillary Clinton and the democrats. For once, they told the truth. They admitted there is one candidate who scares Hillary Clinton and that is senator marco rubio. What is your reaction to that . Does marco rubio scare the democrats and Hillary Clinton the most . Sure. The republicans have permanently alienated the hispanics. His finances wont be a weakness for him . Listen, the hispanic piece of it is there, he is a good debater. I tell you what scares me is a combination of rubio and kasich. Then you have florida and ohio and we have to win one of those. We cant win democrats without winning one of those two states. He got on base but he is pulling solo and while he had a better night than usual i think other candidates were more forceful. There were a number of times he said something and someone else rushed in and said it more crisply. He hired a media adviser and training for the debates. It didnt pay off . Somewhat. This is not his natural habitat. This is not where he excels. It comes across. There lets watch this moment. I want to talk to you about it. Ronald reagan was strong. And Ronald Reagan walked away at can i finish can i finish my time . Why does she keep interrupting everybody . Id like to finish my response. It didnt go over well. He was booed and he was booed when he made a mean remark about kasich. You said that his bullying is getting as old as his bell kosity is wearing thin and this debate, the Fourth Meeting of republican candidates made that abundantly clear. Do we know if voters think that . Were not going to see the polls for a couple of days. I do think that people are getting tired of his bullying. He is a thinskinned bully. Why did he say that about fiorina, she has been critical of him. There was that moment with kasich. It plays very small. But he is still at the top. For now. Been there for a while. But i think the debates change things. He will wear out his welcome. Now, on to the other person who is at the top of the polls, ben carson, he has been feuding with the media. As you know. He showed up at Liberty University today and urged students to stand up against what he calls secular progressives and he blamed them for criticizing his theory that joseph stored grain in the egyptian pyramids. So many in the media wanting to bring me down because i represent something that they cant stand. But the fact of the matter is, in romans chapter 8, it said if god be for you who could be against you . That went over well. Is the media disdainful of religious candidates . Candidates who appeal to religious folks . I dont think we are disdainful. We are wary with candidates who lead with religion and make religion the center of everything they do and say. You are not running for pastor in chief. I saw a comment where he was defended his honesty. He said im honest because im a godfearing christian. I dont like when people hide behind religion like that. We have had a lot of people who are goode fearing who are plenty dishonest. Your religion is not the case for your candidacy. But religion is a part of being a republican for evangelicals. A large part of the voting block. Republicans genuflect before them. And that is a tension that has to be resolved. Chris christie said last night, talking about democrats are letting lawlessness reign. He followed up on that today. Here it is. No president of the United States should dignify a group like that by saying anything positive like them and no candidate for president of the United States like Hillary Clinton should give them credibility by meeting with them. I want the black lives matter people to understand. Dont call and ask for a meeting. Youre not getting one. There are reasons to be critical of the people in the black lives matter movement. But saying you will not meet with them is crazy. You cannot dismiss an entire group that was born for real grievances. You cannot dismiss them out of hand like that. But it will be popular with the conservative base. You said there are reasons to be critical everyone is open to criticism. Absolutely. Which is why you should meet with them. There is an ongoing dialogue about race. The university of missouri has been the center of the upheaval with the protesters. They ousted the University President and chancellor and expressed anger at the media for violating the idea of safe spaces. Some people understand it and believe it in. And others dont understand what that means. We have to be careful when we are using the adjective safe every student deserves to be physically safe and safe from intimidation. The notion that you should be safe from uncomfortable ideas and from discussions that displease you. We have to be careful and nuanced here where we are drawing the lines. Im going beyond missouri here. The students have very, very real complaints. I like the fact that students you know, get together and speak out and use their free speech to effect change. But looking beyond that university we have to be careful we dont turn colleges which are supposed to be provocative places that we dont turn them into cuddling rooms. You are supposed to get Life Experiences there. This is from yale and they were in an assembly and to promote free speech. A student interrupted. Im wondering, this sort of thing has been brewing on College Campuses for a while. Its a little disturbing. I think youre right about dont coddle people. Everyone has the right to speak out about their ideas. You should not intimidate people or threaten them. But we have to careful as students say i dont want to listen to this speaker. I have been in the conservative movement for about a quarter century now and reporting on immigration issues. My first book was invasion in 2002 talking about all these things that people are talking about now. And i think its healthy to have this internal debate about ha the priorities should be, what the limitations should be. What kind of triage the federal government should be doing. Everybody agrees that something is broke and what we disagree on is where we should start fixing it and who should get favorite favored treatment and preference. Are you surprised it is at this level now . It could decide the election. But donald trump is saying no one would be talking about it as much as we are talking about it now if it had not been for him. Would you agree with that . I think he has pushed it into the forefront in a way that standard politicians have not been able to. But the fact is that it has always been an issue in g. O. P. Primaries with pat buchanan and a lot of people in the conservative movement who are reporting on the impact not only on National Security and public safety. I havent had a chance to read but i read the cliff notes to be honest and you talk about what illegal immigration does for workers here. Bob beckel was saying they dont take jobs from americans. Of all of these hightech, high skilled workers which all the candidates say they are for. Are being replaced and forced to train their cheap substitutes from india. It has come up in the gop debates and there was a dust up on whether starbucks, those are the red cups with the new red cups whether they are too pc. And even we were able to buy a ton of christmas stuff at starbucks, is too much being made of this . Its a tempest in a starbucks cup. A tempest in a coffee cup. Christians are not going to be offended by a silly cup and probably not drinking at starbucks anyway. But talking about pc, the fact is that we need to defuse this idea of whether its on a College Campus where safe spaces where Everyone Wants to be protected from dissident speech. And ted cruz is right, if you voice policy views that are different you are a nativist or antiimmigrant it is ridiculous. We all care about our country and want it to be around for our kids and grandkids. Frank bruni said we have to be careful about that. Just because you disagree with someone you want to stop them from speaking. Can we talk about this book now . Sold out. So who or what is a crap weasel . They are politicians that say one thing to get elected and then do the opposite pocketing money from special interests when they get to washington. Which includes just about everybody on capitol hill who becomes an enstretched incumbent and beltway barnacle. That is the case with many politicians on both sides of the aisle. Tonight, newly released Surveillance Video shows a virginia man being tasered by police multiple times. He is outside an emergency room. He was handcuffed and being taken to the hospital for evaluation. But after tasing him, officers dont bring him inside. They return him to a squad car. Lambert goes into cardiac arrest and dies later in the hospital. The medical examiner says that the cause of death is cocaine intoxication but his family is filing suit for wrongful death. Joining me now, riva march is here to talk about it. And also a retired new York City Police detective. Thank you for coming on. Heres the thing, this video looks terrible. There is no reason for this man to have lost his life. If the coroner saw this video while conducting the investigation do you think that that would have impacted the findings . The taser marks are not in that report. The corer is a medical examiner and in the civil case you should expect that the family will have its own independent medical expert who will testify about the cause of death and they are contesting that the cause of death was the small amount of cocaine found in his system and that the cause was really the 20 times that he was tazed. I think the numbers break down to somewhere between 87 seconds of being tazed. I think its also important to note in this case this started with the police going to help a man who was having a psychotic break or Mental Health issues were going on. And things were going okay until this man acknowledged he had used cocaine and all of a sudden we see this really ugly turn of events and this aggressive conduct by these officers that seems to be in violation of their own policies with represerespect to using a taser when someone is contained. It look like the officers are just drunk with power. Thats all that i can say about this troubling video. I have to say the 20 times, that is part of the lawsuit thats filed against the police department. Cnn has not been able to independently verify that claim. But it does look excessive. Harry, he was taken to a hospital for mental evaluation and he kicked the police car and kicked the door. Why would they take him away from the hospital . I think thats where they made a mistake. Im agreeing with you on this caper. All right, harry. Let me tell you something, the officers were fine up to where they got the gentleman, you know, they wrapped his feet. Shackle. I said this earlier, once they shackled his feet they could have called medical help in the hospital to come out and sedate him and put him on a gurney, right . What we do in the nypd is have a gurney come out and strap him up and let the doctors take care of him. They are shackling his feet right there. You want to arrest him for the use of cocaine or kicking out the window, you can do that when the man is in the hospital. They made a mistake trying to bring him back. It was very evident to me and everyone that he was suffering from some kind of psychotic event. He didnt commit an Armed Robbery and try to escape police. They acted properly until they tazed him. And the reason they didnt want to take him in they didnt know how he was going to act inside the hospital. But still we go through that all the time. Strap him to the gurney and sedate him. You said when you were an officer you had the ambulance come to the scene. We had an emotionally disturbed person, the fact is that we would wait on the scene and have the ambulance show up and shackle him to a chair or to a gurney and bring him to the hospital and guard him at the hospital and the doctors would calm him down and give him whatever he needed. Its clear that he needed some kind of Mental Health care. Do Police Officers need to be better trained when it comes to these cases . Absolutely. And they need to use Additional Resources. I think in so many of these videotapes we are asking how come they didnt request Additional Resources and no one is talking to a supervisor or someone who has Mental Health training to figure out how best to deal with a man that is combative that this man is. He ran into a glass door. Obviously something is going on with him. Could that have to do that and again i dont know the full story but they did not call for additional backup, that is a resource issue . Maybe its a budget issue or just bad training . Were just hearing too many of these stories. You talk about a resource issue, think about the millions of dollars paid in these civil lawsuits. There is a 25 million lawsuit pending. That is the number contained in the complaint. We dont know if a jury will reach a verdict in favor of the family or how much nay will award. But across the country hundreds of millions of dollars are being paid in civil lawsuits. As a lawyer, thats one of the ways that we use to change systems. We File Lawsuits and hopefully it sends a message to Police Departments that you have to change. You have to train officers differently. But the damages could be use for the resources and training that were needed in a case like this. Do you think they should have been disciplined because they had been investigated and cleared and promoted after this happened . I think the taser in the backseat should have there is no doubt. There is a sergeant on the scene here. This looks to me like a lack of experience. The sergeant on the scene should have said get that man on a gurney and get him inside the hospital. That is the problem here. Maybe they didnt have a protocol for Something Like that. We are here in new york city and a lot of large cities. Maybe theyre not.
