Who won the debate . Meanwhile, one viewer on the democratic side was, shall we say, underwhelmed. You would have been better off watching the world series because in my opinion it was a swing and a mass. Brianna keilar, you have breaking news about information about an upcoming meeting the campaigns are holding as a result of last nights debate. What do you have . So as you know, the republicans, nearly all of them, have been really frustrated with how last nights debate went down and now are taking the matters into their own hand. They are going to hold representatives from several of the campaigns are going to hold a meeting at 6 00 p. M. Sunday night in washington, d. C. , to sort of come up with a way that they can gain more control of the debate process, of the debate formats away from the national committee. They think the whole debate process has gotten out of happened under the control of the rnc and want to bring that back under their control. So earlier today, members from the ben carson, donald trump, Lindsey Graham and job bee jindal campaigns started talking and will meet together on sunday. You said trump, graham, who else . Trump, graham, carson and jindal were the architects of this meeting but theyve also brought in other candidates. So marco rubio, rick santorum, carly fiorina, rand paul is tentative, jeb bush is tentative. We spoke to a Chris Christie spokesman who said they were not part of the discussion which says that christies campaign will not be there. The key player who will not be there. So the question is, was this part of the reason for Reince Priebus remarks after the debate last night . Maybe he knew something was brewing because he came out and made the comment about the questions being too pointed or not fair. What do they want exactly . When Reince Priebus came out and made those remarks, it sort of seemed like he was in the same camp as the republican candidates who went after the cnbc moderators and now it seems like he was preparing for this backlash from the campaigns which frustrated them. Reince priebus and the rnc were frustrated with cnbc but also frustrated with the way the whole process has gone out of the control. They were trying to rein it in from 2012 but they havent been able to do that. Do you know what specifics they want . Or is that not out there yet . They have certain points they want to touch on. They want the whole debate to be more focused on the issues. They want the debates are broken up to be more focused and coherent. They dont want the moderators asking gotcha questions or pit the candidates against one another and make sure that they are all getting equal time. Of course, jeb bushs Campaign Strategists were very upset about the little amount of time that he got in wednesday nights debate. One of his Campaign Aide workers were being noiknocking doors of the control room. Thats right. After last nights performance, a lot of people are talking about Campaign Death watch. Whats he saying about it . Reporter hes saying thats absolutely not the case. In fact, he was asked the question, what do you say to the criticisms that your campaign is on life support . Thats when he answered its not on life support. At the same time, don, hes very aware of the disappointment and concern that some of the donors are feeling. In fact, we understand from sources who talked to cnns john king and dana bash that he actually had a donor call today and it wasnt something that he did on the fly. He didnt do this on the run. He sat down, one source tells dana bash, and made this call very deliberately a. Conference call with donors to assure them that his strategy is sound. He also, were told, acknowledged that he could have done better. He tried to assure donors that things are okay. He wasnt necessrily very upbeat. I think he was somber about it but certainly trying to project some cautious confidence that the strategy of his campaign is sound. Brianna, there is an internal Bush Campaign document leaked to u. S. World and news report showing that bush is ready to invest heavily in New Hampshire. 5. 6 million in ads after the first of the year. What does he tell you about his strategy . Reporter you know, thats something that is in line with something that im hearing from bush backers. Look, is this ideal . No. They say there are many other debates and the important thing is not necessarily for him to be popping right now in october and november. The important thing is for him to be popping in january ahead of these key february dates of the Iowa Caucuses of the New Hampshire primary and point back to 2012 when Newt Gingrich was really flying high, outperforming the field and those backing mitt romney spent a lot of money on ads and Newt Gingrich saw his poll numbers fall. Ultimately, he didnt do very well, as you know. So they are saying to look at this document and this is a signal to that. To dylans breaking news, people were bashing cnbc and their handling of the debate. Listen to this. Maybe every moderator should show that they vote republican because why should we have these people that hate everything we stand for and i wont mention his name but the questions were so nasty. What its turned into is a gotcha and thats not helpful to anybody. Im not going to allow them to ask stupid questions and let them continue to have their bias show like the show last night. That may have been the only consensus they came to on the stage last night. Reporter look, theres been a lot of criticism and youve heard that from a number of the candidates. Do keep this in mind to add to what dylan said, when they are criticizing the media, they are in a very safe space with their constituents. Consider that as they are certainly hoping that there are going to be changes and they are also taking aim at the rnc on this. Brianna keilar and dylan byers, thank you. Barry bennett is joining me right now. We can turn these reports that the republican candidates are meeting in washington to strategize how to cut the debates and cut the rnc out of the process. Is this is an insurgency and why is it even necessary . Theres a lot of frustration coming out of boulder. A lot of us were angry about not just the moderators questions but there were a lot of problems. Were not interesting in letting news media organizations choose who our nominee is. We all have to get together and worry about the brand of the party and speak to republican parties. How are news organizations choosing who the nominee will be . Don, if you let anchors ask questions, gotcha questions and they go after bush and that kind of stuff, we dont need. Weve got plenty of ideas to talk about. Weve got plenty of solutions to talk about. Barry, with all due respect, if one is going to be the president of the united states, youre going to face questions from conservatives, moderates, from liberals, everyone. Even if its a gotcha question, ill give you that, sbt this sort of a test of what kind of candidate or president they will be in front of the media, in front of foreign leaders, how they are going to answer particular questions . Not every question, especially after you sit in the chair of the oval office, its not going to be an i love you question. I understand that but this is the republican primary first, right . So we dont need people who are not republicans who express hostility towards republicans to host our debates. Thats crazy. Okay. Im not sure most people in america will agree with you but ill give that you. I think a lot of republicans do. Okay. This is what your candidate had to say about the debate. Take a listen. Specific things were looking for are, first of all, moderators who are interested in actually getting the facts and not and gotcha questions and were looking for an opportunity to actually be able to explain what your program is. What your philosophy for leadership is and then be questioned about it. Okay. So only conservatives or republicans are able to understand republican candidates. Is that are able to question republican in the republican primary and only liberals can question and understand liberal candidates . Im going to vote in the republican primary. I dont know what youre voting in. How do you know the questioners on that stage are liberals . Have you seen their Voter Registration card . I think that, you know i dont think it take as great deal of research to figure that out. Im sorry. I didnt hear you. I dont think it takes a great deal of research to figure that out. Okay. So in order to win, youre going to have to win over some moderates and some liberals as well. Correct. In the general election . Right. Not in the primary. Okay. Lets move on. Last night dr. Carson was also asked about his relationship to a dietary supplement maker called manitech. Does your Campaign Want to clarify anything about his connection to them . No. He gave a paid speech to this group, a couple paid speeches. One they paid to for charity he doesnt run the company or publicly endorse the company and hes not a spokesman for the company. Okay. Barry bennett, thank you, sir, always appreciate you coming on and answering the questions. An odd couple. Why bill maher actually agrees with something that ted cruz says. Here to discuss this is an adviser to jeb bush during his 1994 campaign for governor. Here also, keep the promise, one pat, which is a supporting ted cruz and carly is here, author and former navy s. E. A. L. You saw our breaking news this morning. Several of the republican president ial candidates plan on holdsing a meeting in washington on sunday according to dylan byers saying that they are trying to talk about the debate separating from the rnc. Do you think donald trump should take part in this meeting . He got them to cut the debate from 3 1 2 hours down to two. This is the guy you want in that room negotiating what might go down with the next debate. Kelly, is this a good idea . Not necessarily. I would ask carl, what are you negotiating . What would be the negotiation . Control the content of the questions or scrub the ideologic ideological predelictions of the moderators . Are you going to come in with a list of question that moderator is not allowed to ask . You deal with the hand youre dealt. And your candidate is masterful and being able to turn around how many times has he been called left for dead and this is the comment that is going to sink him and hes still high up in the polls. Im not sure thats a good idea. What the focus should be, don, lets make all of these debates, these forms of pure democracy, work for the voters because it allows people to turn on the computers or tvs and get access to candidates, people who go and meet the candidates. This is their opportnity to hear substance and that was the point of senator cruz last night. Lets talk about substance. Mack, i see you shaking your head. I think jeb bush is not part of this. Hes on the fence. Is this a good idea . Well, i dont think its particularly a good idea. Youre not going to be able to pick the panelists or pick the questions. Im not sure america bringing questions to the table is a good idea, then. You would just turn a zoo into a circus. It is what it is and you have to power your way through it. Thats part of the testing process. Okay. Well, i think thats what i said. So lets move on and talk specifically about the candidates. I know you think donald trump won the debate, carl, hes your guy. Some say guys like marco rubio shined. People have been screaming for months that trump needs to act more president ial. He held back, only attacked kasich when kasich attacked him and went after the moderators and was generally polite. He really took the fight to the people who needed it to be taken to and this is a show of president ial attitude by him. Kellyanne, lets talk about ted cruz. Bill maher tweeted this, oh, my god, did i just hear ted cruz something that i agree with . Yes. The media is even stupider than the polls. Whos on first . Don, we may use part of that tweet in an upcoming ad, our super pac. I think maher taps into something important, which is get on with it and talk substance. Ted cruz will be remembred for repeating in this audio memory way that he does exactly what was just asked, given the litany of questions that were just asked of the others and saying cant we talk about substance and then talking about substance. People may have missed that part. He came out with his plat tax plan on the wall street journal. The point that bill maher is making also, if youre going to watch these, you want to learn something from them. We dont want to comment on something that people are learning or saying. He got that point across last night, kellyanne, but he was supposed to be answering a question about Something Else and he didnt and it was supposed to be about the debt ceiling and he didnt get there. We know where he is. He said if you pass this youre giving president obama a dimeencrusted card. 14 Million People arent watching to hear you say that and didnt get to hear him say this either. Don, they want back a few minutes later and said if youd question about the debt ceiling question, but he was able to get that out. And i think what we need are people to maybe you can just ignore the question and sop of the candidates dont need to show up. Wouldnt that be something . If a candidate who qualifies gets all of the press attention, don, because they go and hold a press conference, writing open ped, coming to a show like yours, that would be i dont think they will. I think they should. Its interesting because last night i had all of the monitors up and i was watching and at one point donald trump was on all four cable channels. Thats what he does. He commands the media. Mac, without all of the candidates, jeb bush spoke the least. His Campaign Manager actually confronted the cnbc producer to get jeb bush to give more time. He was on the campaign trail and tried to clean it up. Listen. Look, there are two types of politicians. There are the talkers and there are the doers. I wish i could talk as well as some of the people on the stage, the big personalities on the stage. But im a doer. So hes a doer and says his campaign he actually said the word terminal today. You dont want to be saying that about your campaign. He wasnt a doer on the stage, though. Lets get that straight. Yall hold up here a second. If you were listening to my colleagues here on the show or many of the National Pundits today, youd have to wonder why jeb hasnt killed himself by now. You know, he had an exchange with marco where he came off second best clearly, kind of like when carly harpooned trump in the last debate. I think were overstating the importance of these debates, frankly. If doing a terrible job would get you out of the race, then well, its always, yeah, but. Make your point, mac, because ive got to go. Ben carson doesnt hardly say anything. But ben carson now is a frontrunner. Thank you, guys. Thats my point. Thats my point. Nothing in the debate is affecting carson status, trump status or carly fiorina. It affected marco rubios status. Will it reshape the race . Thats next. Complicate things. Like limiting where you earn bonus cash back. Why put up with that . But the quicksilver card from capital one likes to keep it simple. Real simple. Im talking easy likea walkinthepark, nothingtoworryabout, manthatfeelsgood simple. Quicksilver earns you unlimited 1. 5 cash back on every purchase, everywhere. Its a simple question. Whats in your wallet . Can a a subconscious. Mind . A knack for predicting the future. Reflexes faster than the speed of thought. Can a business have a spirit . Can a business have a soul . Its free and you can see what your score is right now. I just got my free credit score credit karma. Really free. Marco rubio getting praised for his Strong Performance and jeb bush, not so much. Listen to what he said today. You said that you were going to get better at this. What are you going to do to get better at this . Look, we have eight more debates. Im going to have to do whatever candidates do which is rudely interrupt, not answer the questions that are asked and hopefully the debate moderators will ask more substantive questions. Its going fine. Are you having fun . Oh, yeah. You saw it. Lots of fun. Republican strategist Mercedes Schell and contributor van jones, a former Obama Administration officials. Do you feel a little sorry for everybody is hitting jeb bush. Poor guy. Its terrible. First of all, you know, all of these candidates go through these testing periods. I remember when john kerry was written off for dead and Hillary Clinton was written off for dead. They go through these periods but its horrible to see him pretending, im having fun and it looks like hes at a funeral. To help him come out with his donors listen, i think this is a testing period for him. Youre going to see a little bit of his character. Can he push through. Its not over. Lft night he looked like the nerd at a party trying to hang out with the cool kids and failing. Yeah, but robert, could he have a john mccain moment where all of a sudden hes lugging his own luggage and rolling through the airport and next he is a nominee . I have spoken with several people close to governor bush today and they said theyd like to see mike murphy, his longtime strategist, come back from the super pac supporting bush and helping out bush and maybe narrowing the team and helping them out in miami. Its a long race. Its only late october. Hes certainly in a tough position and wondered did he pick the wrong battle . They thought it was better going after the outsiders than pretty shai marco rubio. Does this change anything in the race . You heard that these debates dont really change anything. Do they change anything . Certainly it changed the entire dynamic in the 2016 contest because that exchange became a defining one really in that establishment lane theres been intense dcompetition. Kasich, bush, rubio. Now it looks like rubio has momentum. Trump had a solid performance and shows that hes in it for the long run. Mercedes, i want to ask you about the john harwood tweet, talking about the debate and how tough it is. He said moderating tone rich my understanding of challenges and speakerboehner has faced and paulryan will face. First of all, he should not be giving any sort of an opinion. It was a disgrace how they managed this. This is not just pundits saying this. They just mishandled this debate. Take note here. Remember, who is hosting the next democratic debate . Its msnbc rachel maddow. Right along where the democrats are. I think whats missing it would have been much more powerful having a larry kudlow there for cnbc who understands the conservative issues and can ask the questions. Thats the part missing, having the conservative hosts out there able to have the discussion because, youre right, its becoming more about this personality conflict as opposed to talking about the substance. That was the unified factor last night on that stage. Republicans always blame the media. The democrats are not having a debate with fox. Why . I think you have a very hard time, mercedes, saying that cnbc, a Financial News network is republican or democrat. Don, the way they managed calling Donald Trumps campaign a comic campaign and just the way the questions were asked let me say a couple things. They had wrong research. Listen, i have great sympathy for you on this because ive seen some tough questions come our way as well. The problem i have with what they did at cnbc is that they did put themselves in a position where the conservatives can just attack the media and rev up their base and i agree it would have been much better if they had taken some of those questions. Put larry kudlow there. That would not have happened. I agree with you. There were some gotcha questions there. Yes. Thats true. But i stick by the point that i made in the first block of our show, that thats part of the challenge when running for president. Part of the game. Is how you answer every single question. Thats right. At the same time, you also have to realize in the same way that the democrats have set it up, msnbc, Certain Networks in deciding to exclude fox, for example, you have the moderator very liberal so is Debbie Wasserman schultz doing a better jonathan Reince Priebus is . Youll have to ask Reince Priebus that question. Robert, ill ask you, then. Its a real problem for the Republican National committee because they want to change the amount of debates but in doing so they seeded some of the power they have normally had over the process to the television networks. What were seeing unfold right now is a brewing, simmering frustration going on for months. Among these campaign who is believe the networks have too much power to prove the moderators, decide the formats. Thats why they are going to try to huddle on sunday and try to bring the power to the campaign. I want to say one thing. To compare msnbc to cnbc, i think its not fair to them. Honestly, cnbc is straight down the middle on most of this stuff. The moderators certainly didnt do a good job. I let you talk. I let you talk. Theyve been straight. I dont think its fair to say that cnbc is in the same category as fox or msnbc is very partisan and i think beating up on the refs, youre not winning the game. They are winning the Republican Base over this because they are angry. They are angry with mou they have treated republicans. Another time. Thank you. Its not just the republicans upset about the questions. Liberals can, too. Well get into that when we come back. Has three cold symptom fighters to relieve your tough symptoms. A college sophomore, an iraq war vet, writes an oped for his newspaper about black lives matter and that set off a firestorm. That student is brian and he joins me now. Also with me now is bakari sellers, a former member of the house of representatives. Brian, you wrote a conservative o oped for your College Newspaper which is a very liberal campus. Tell us what happened then. Immediately or a day after the article was published, there was a negative backlash against the paper, students call for it to be recycled. And after a few days of getting yelled at and being called racist on campus, the College President put out a blog post and defended my right to state my opinion and since then the attitude has turned around thanks to the media and also to students on campus. So the Student Government voted that they were going to cut the funding but it wouldnt have taken effect until 2016. Youre a little older. You got a scholarship that they offer at wesley for veterans. You knew the school was liberal and saw that as a good thing. You told the Washington Post why you choose that and said, i i knew i wouldnt experience any growth. If im around, people with extremely liberal ideas ill constantly challenge ill be constantly challenge and counter and my views will either change or become sharpened. Thats one of the smartest things, in my estimation, that ive ever heard, and thats how it should be for everyone. So what was the problem with that . Well, students werent looking to engage, which really shocked me. I thought when i wrote it id get about a dozen to a dozen and a half critiques and instead students were even trying to do that. They were just saying, dont ever publish again, which was not good. Bakari, is it impossible to have productive conversations anymore . I actually brians oped piece based on false premises. Even more importantly, what you do about the defensive speech is you dont shut it down. A dialogue is necessary. We have to have this dialogue back and forth so, as brian said, his views can become sharper. Some people abuse that notion. Dont get me wrong. Some people are racist and im not calling brian that by any stretch. Sometimes people stretch over that line. I just thought it was offensive and wrong. We have a problem with Political Correctness here. My only problem with these colleges and universities is you have to have the free flow of information. Bob Jones University invited me to speak but we have to have the free flow of communication. Brian, do you want to respond to that . Absolutely. People have disagreed with the article left and right and up and down. If the opinion is that its wrong, thats an opinion and valid. Ive learned a lot more about the movement and issues behind it. Like what . What have you learned . Well, ive learned that that it is unfair to put these this movement next to the violence so closely because the moderate portion of the movement does have a good message. I still believe the quickest ways to lose Popular Support is to not have control over your more extreme elements. That being said, the movement should succeed and get its moderate ideas passed. Bakari, you heard the republican candidates up on the stage last night and said, listen, they felt railroaded by the moderators. Do you think progressives are becoming too politically correct or too intolerant or maybe more intolerant than conservatives in some ways . Not at all. I find it ironic that were having a discussion about Political Correctness about the don lemon. I think its a notion that we have to look at as an entire country. One thing is for certain, not many republicans are on that stage that are politically correct. The one who i hope is not in the next debate who i dont think will make the next debate, governor Chris Christie, is probably the most offensive and least politically correct person ive ever met and able to watch politics throughout the country. I think bryan is right. He lumped black lives matter with Police Violence or not per se the death of Police Officers. Maybe were able to change some hearts and minds. By the way, you can be politically incorrect, as they say, and not be offensive as well. The two dont have to be both. Okay. Thank you, guys. Appreciate it. Don, before we go, i just want to thank bryan for his service to our country and having the freedom of the press and everything else. Thank you so much for your service. Its my pleasure. During a drug investigation that was targeting zacharys date, not him. Joining me now are paul and angie hammond, zacharys parents. Also with us is eric bland, the hammonds family attorney. We asked you guys to show that video in the introduction because we didnt want to be rude or insulting or insensitive and you said you want people to know, to see what happened to your son to see all of it, angie, correct . Well, yes, i dont want to see it, frankly, but i feel its necessary to show it to people so they know what happened. Again, were sorry for your loss. How are you guys doing today . Were coping. Were doing okay. Its been a hard three months. Were you surprised at this decision, paul . No charges . General rly from what you se in South Carolina, no, i really wasnt surprised. I think we see it way too much. And angie . No, really i wasnt. It needs to change, but i wasnt surprised. You sort of expected this. I know it doesnt make it any easier but you sort of expected it . Yeah. Eric, lieutenant mark tiller has stood by his claim that he acted in selfdefense. You dont think that that is what we see, do you . Oh, absolutely not. He put himself in harms way and now hes claiming that it was in selfdefense. Its clear that the car was not ever directed towards him and was arcing to leave the parking lot. Theres no academy that would teach an officer to do what lieutenant tiller did. He came in and didnt identify himself as police. He drew his gun and immediately tell had he graphed what he was going to do when he said i will blow your fing a. He used profanity. A crime did not even occur and he used deadly force. It would be akin, don, to me starting a fire and then i put it out and get to call myself a hero. Lieutenant till letter murdered Zachary Hammond and, quite frankly, i was surprised there were not criminal charges after i saw the video. Its just clear, theres no just cause for what he did. Youre saying his behavior was excessive, the entirety of his actions, his speech and what he did, you think that was excessive. The officer approached your sons car with his gun drawn. Zachary was unarmed. He drove off. Why do you think he drove off . Do you think he was in fear . I think he was scared. I mean sorry. Continue, angie. I do think he was scared. You know, tiller wasnt even in a regular police uniform. He was in a cammo or army green jump suit. So and didnt even identify himself. All zach knew was someone was running up to the car with their guns drawn and im sure he was scared. He was just scared. Eric, you wanted to jump in. What did you want to say . Yeah. I mean, he just whether zachary felt it was a Police Officer or not, you cant use Excessive Deadly force in that situation and lieutenant tiller didnt tell him, hey, keep your hands up, dont put your hands down. He said, stop, stop, i will blow your fing head off. So thats telling him that he is going to shoot him for a crime that never had been committed. It was supposed to be a drug transaction where they were going to do a drug buy from the passenger. They never even let that materialize. So zacharys life was taken over a potential 60 drug transaction that he was not even involved with. Its outrageous. Eric, i want to ask you about the one factor that seems to have been zacharys Text Messages between may 26th and july 29th, theres talk about selling drugs and being an outlaw. How significant do you think those were in the decision . I think it probably played a role in the solicitors mind in saying am i going to take down a Police Officer for someone like zachary. But those Text Messages would have never been admitted in court because lieutenant tiller didnt know who Zachary Hammond was. His actions have to be judged. Any charges that are brought against him, its the actor who you have to judge. Not the victim. I mean, its simply like a rape case. In this situation, they are blaming the they are trying to blame the victim. They didnt know who zachary was. Whatever zachary may have done or didnt do beforehand is irrelevant and white noise and never should have been disclosed. I have to ask you, do you think some justice will come of this . The Justice Department is continuing the civil rights investigation. I hope so. I hope so. Were very hopeful that the federal justice will do something. Yeah. Eric, paul, angie, thank you so much.
