With all attention on child abuse we have been having a lively candid debate about the line between discipline and abuse. Chris cuomo will join don and me in the hour. We will let you in on the conversations we have been having offcamera. Begin with breaking news, Arizona Cardinals backup running back, Jonathan Dwyer arrested in connection with Domestic Abuse allegations. Ted, another arrest in the nfl for Domestic Violence. Why was Arizona Cardinals backup running back Jonathan Dwyer arrested . Well, don, alyison, two incidents, july 21 and 22nd. According to Phoenix Police, the two victims in this case, a 27yearold female, and an 18monthold minor. According to police they were called to the house where dwyer was living, on the 27th of july. But left after the female victim came to the door and said he was not at home. He was. They now believe, hiding in the bathroom at the time. She didnt report this until, september 11th. And since then they had been investigating it. If you look at the charges that he is facing now. Arrested to day and in Maricopa County gentlela y jail tonight. Look at the charges. He is facing one aggravated assault, charge, causing a fracture. One count of aggravated assault involving minor. Two counts of criminal damage. Preventing the use of a phone in an emergency. And another assault charge. Police say that, on the second incident, that, dwyer, apparently threw a shoe in the direction of the 18monthold. And it was during that incident that he apparently threw the cell phone of the 27yearold victim out of a window. So that she could not call police. The reaction from the cardinals and league, ted . The cardinals immediately issued a statement. They also say they have been cooperating with police soon as they found out about it. The statement says we became aware of these allegations thifs afternoon when notified by Phoenix Police and are cooperating. Given serious nature of allegations we have taken the step to deactivate jonathan from all team activities. We will continue to closely monitor this as the it develops and evaluate Additional Information as the it becomes available. All right, ted rowlands, thank you very much. Appreciate that. All of this is tragic. Terrible news. For the nfl. So has the league lost its credibility . The question . Lets talk about all that. Joined by lanny davis, legal specialist, former special counsel to president clinton, columnist for the hill a celebrity branding expert, and lee steinberg, agent with steinberg sports and entertainment. Gentlemen. Thank you for joining us. You heard the breaking news, Jonathan Dwyer, greg hardy benched. Adrian peterson out, ray rice suspended all in just the past couple week. Can we blame Roger Goodell for not instituting some sort of coherent policy . Lee, let me ask you . First of all the commissioner sets the tone. We should have had a Domestic Violence policy some years ago. He could have acted decisively. He had all the facts when the rice case came up. There was no need to wait for the tape. There have been 56 incidents under his watch. Does that mean he should go . So many people are calling for his head. Others are saying give the guy a chance. Which one is it . I think we have an opportunity now to institute programs, that first of all will train young men not to do this. The nfl has a great opportunity because it is a sport so popular. I had lennox lewis, the heavyweight champion, cut a Public Service announcement said real men dont hit women. Athletes can really lead the way here. Can Roger Goodell lead the way . Or is he too tarnished as a result . I dont think he is too tarnished. I think that they need to move very rapidly here to speak out. There is no reason to delay in any of these cases under the personal conduct policy. You dont have to be convicted. An arrest is enough to go ahead and move. Okay. I want to jump in. Leigh. Should Roger Goodell go or not . I dont think he, he has a whole lot of credibility. The owners will never fire him. Lanny, should he go or not . No, i dont think he should go. He owned up to an egregious mistake trying to rectify it. Which is the right way to go. And make the mistake into a teaching moment. Let me get, our next guest in here, i will continue on. Do you think he should go or not . I think he has, the leadership of the nfl. Look at the culture of the league. Wanted to get you all on that. Lany, a question, despite what the nfl and teams have done or not done to tamp this down. A never ending stream of bad news. So, what does he do now . You heard what leigh said and believes. What should he do now . If you read the statement that he put out. Trying to correct what he admitted to, to the mistake. It is a strong new policy of six games at least, suspension, and banishment for a second incident. He can now implement that policy for, incidents that he wasnt aware of or sensitive to the terrible stain of Domestic Violence in the country not just in the nfl but nba and other walks of live. And now this now is a teaching moment. Maybe Roger Goodell can turn something terrible and mistaken that he did. If you read his statement. I think he is trying to make this into a teaching moment. Domestic violence in america. As he said unacceptable under all circumstances. The statement he put out. Maybe people say it ties late. Maybe people say it is too late. The Tipping Point would come if sponsors start pulling out. If viewers started turning away, which we havent seen happen from the nfl yet. The ceo of pepsico put out this statement tonight. I am a mother. A wife and passionate football fan. I am deeply disturbed by the repugnant behavior of a few players and the nfl mishandling is casting a cloud over the integrity of the league and the reputations of the majority of players who dedicate their lives to a career they love. When it come to child abuse and Domestic Violence, there is no middle ground, the behaviors are disgustable, unacceptable, and fly in the face of the values we at pepsico believe in and cherish. Given our long standing relationship with the nfl. I know Roger Goodell, we worked together for years, a man of integrity. I am confident he will do the right thing for the league in light of the serious, use he is facing. That is a vote of confidence, jeetendr, do you think he is worthy of that . Seems to be a vote of confidence. Not what the consumers are thinking. 48 of 3,000 americans consider the nfl league to be sleazy, i think that is very telling in terms of how they perceive the organization to be. I think the nfl, you know, has a multitude of different challenges. Certainly in crisis mode. We need to not only look at the leadership. We need to look at what theyre doing inside the organization. What sort of culture they have. What are their procedures and practices . And they also have to look at how the nfl have become more transparent. And more open. It is really a caustic entry into u. S. Teens and millenials. Transparency, authenticity. Telling us what is going on is a first step toward correcting the nfl brand. Leigh, this is what Adrian Petersons teammates said today. One of his teammates said today. I dont think it is fair at all. I think he should be able to play. He hasnt been convicted of nothing. Growing up, that was nothing, man. My mom, she always whipped me up. And things like that. Man. Just, just, you know, in my pull chur, thpull culture thats how i was raised, look at me now. In the nfl. There is a whole lot to discuss with that. But, just, leigh, seems to be common defense that many people have raised the type of treatment. Does it hurt the nfl that players speak out and defend their teammate . I dont think there are many doing that. One of the dangers here. These players are so physically strong that they can hurt some one the specter of a 4yearold being hit with a tree branch by someone who is so physically strong is daunting. But the players will get this right. The league will get this right. And, well see a Program Just Like what they did with breast cancer. They will take over a leadership role. Theyll become a leader here in a dynamic way. Make no mistake. Yours saying that it, they will get it right. What took so long. To get it right in the first place. Whether it took long or not. By 21, the nations most popular sport. People are going in droves to games. Its got that power. Its, both the most popular tv show and most popular sport. It will come through. We like your optimism this is a teachable moment. Has start aid conversation among us in the office and offices around the country. But lanny, so many people when something goes wrong. Kneejerk reaction is that we want the boss head on a platter. So do you think it is belt tire have Roger Goodell stay and fix it . Well, first of all he is not going to stay if robert mueller, former head of the fbi, a man of integrity finds he lied about not seeing the videotape. Any one who saw the second individually tape who didnt suspend ray rice doesnt deserve off to be commissioner. I happen to admire her statement. Giving somebody the benefit of the doubt until investigated. Then we will see. I would like twhilwhile i have chance, this is not confined to the nfl, it is nba, nhl, in nonprofessional sport, women are beaten all the time and kids are abecause e abused and beaten all the time. The attitude, my mother whipped me. It is okay. This is about vif lense. Not just confined to the nfl. What Roger Goodell said unacc t unacceptable in all circumstances. Applies to more than nfl everyone in sports and jut side of sports. Can i jump in. We have got to go for time. So sorry, jeetendr. Thank you, leigh, lanny davis. We have much, much more on all of this and the question raised by the child abuse allegations. What is discipline versus abuse . Talking about that a lot. Absolutely. The allnew cclass. At the very touch point of performance and innovation. Just a few hours ago the house voted 273 to 156 to approve the president s plan to arm Syrian Rebels. The senate will vote tomorrow. Tonight there are lots of voices cautioning that this is a bad plan. Absolutely. Joining us, two people who disagrae on what the u. S. Should do. A former chairman of the house intelligence committee, and michael weiss, contributor to Politico Magazine and columnist for now lebanon. Folks on capitol hill are concerned about whether to arm the moderate rebels. Lets listen in and talk. Will not support arming or training the Syrian Opposition forces. In iraq alone we spent the better part of eight years, training, training iraq, police, military forces, 280,000 person army at the cost of 20 billion to the american people. 20 billion. And the first time they had to step up and defend their country, their people, and their way of life, what did they do . They folded in the face of isis, abandoning equipment and facilities to the enemy. So, representative hoekstr achoekstra, you say we should be cautious about that, why is senate athat . America has been fighting the threat from radical islam over 20 years, successes and failures under democrat and republican president s. But the problem still persists. Maybe it is as grit eat today an 20 years. As we look at this, there has been no discussion about what happened in libya. Not that long ago. We made the decision to align ourselves with the moderates. We found out moderates were not as moderate as what we thought they were. Once gadhafi was gone, they turned, we took northern africa, stable, fighting radical jihadists with us, and turned it into a haven and a playground for radical jihadists that now threaten the underbelly of western europe and the rest of northern africa. The last time we did this, we failed miserably. We havent had a discussion about what we learned from that misadventure in libya. Michael, why would this be a good idea to arm the Syrian Rebels . Well, i think the current Obama Administration policy, as the it is, is not a good idea. Let me tell you why. Three reasons. First and foremost. Free syrian army was founded not to fight isis. Founded to fight an, eventually overthrow the assad regime. The administration has been quite clear. That is not the priority. Not the policy here. We are helping them become agents to the United States and prosecuting the war on terror. The Free Syrian Army is being attacked not by isis, but the assad regime. The New York Times had a article saying moderate rebels, we are currently supporting, arming, training, the cia not the pentagon, had been attacked mercilessly around the clock. The only group in syria not bombarded, isis. The regime wants an end state, only two solutions are itself and these radical transnational jihadists. Third, i think there is a fundamental problem in terms of long term strategy, winning hearts and mind in this part of the world. A necessary political component to any military campaign. That is to say we are saying to arab revolutioners, sarin gas, scud missiles dropped on their head for three years, prompting no u. S. Intervention to rescue them. Now you are going to do our bidding for us. Rather than dupe who what you h claimed is necessary, a fundamental role for your revolution, overthrowing this barbaric regime, responsible according to the state department for atrocities what would you have the administration do . First, pour 500 million into it and not protect them. At a fundamental realist level, i think the representative agrees. A waste of money. The president is not being forth right with the american people. If you are going to do this and dupe this successfully it is going to require more, not less intervention. You have to let representative hoekstra get in. Do you agree with that . If you are going to seriously attack i sichlt l, you have to have a larger u. S. Alignment, and align yourself with friend proven to be friends in the region for a long time. Who are they . Very clear. Doing some work with the kurds, the Regional Government have been our friend and allies for a long time. They are the only one that have confronted isil and hatch defeated isil, it is time to n engage with the kurdistan government. Have an effective impact in iraq. Also have an effective impact in syria. So align with our friends. People we know and have proven themselves. Lets not find new friends we dont know much about. In my book faterror tunnels they purposely put their fighters in their tunnels near civilians so israel was put to the choice dont fight back or kill civilians. Ready to show civilians on television. Dead baby strategy. It hurts israel terribly. Isis has taken it to the next step. Use the media. First to recruit. Beheadings are recruiting. Second, to frighten and scare. Now the government should never ever stop the media from doing anything it wants. Free speech is more important than anything. I think the media has to put things in context. Shouldnt so the dead baby, beheading. How much of this is propaganda . Them scaring people . Many wonder where do they get their power from . Is this, indeed astro turf. Have this much power in a year . They were al qaeda before. Sort of, you believe. They have the power. There is a report in todays newspaper that Israeli Intelligence has been working very closely with the United States. On its attack on isis. Israeli intelligence has told them they have access to 60 oil wells. Hundreds of millions of dollars the they have control over property. This is really dangerous. Theyve done it amazingly quickly. Taken a little more than ape year. Use aid lot d a lot of resource. Gave the iraqi army. Combination. Effective propaganda. And also substance. We have to be concerned. We are not going to beat isis. So easily. Any more than israel is able to beat ma mass. They use the media. Once they hide their fighters among the is civilians they will do it. The United States will be put to the same challenge. Israel is put to. Dont attack them. If you attack, you will kill civilians. In terror tunnels i compare isis to hamas. We ought to be learning lessons from the way israel has done this. Hope we can do better. They have a lot of resources and made great stride. What we heard, there are not that many, 20,000, 30 t are we giving them too much power. Should we be reporting on them every hour . Reporting is one thing. Glorg t glor fiifying their trailers. Theyre quite strong. They do pose a threat. Adrian peterson child abuse case is creating a debate about where to draw the line between discipline and abuse. Who gets to decide . Even if you didnt have kids you probably have an opinion based on how your parents raised you. I know you do, don. And we have been having spirited conversations around the office about all of this. So, we invited new day anchor chris cuomo to join us for a no holds bar conversation. Thank you for joining us. What a pleasure to be with you two. Its Corporal Punishment. Do you spank your children . Im not allowed. Would you look ike to spank children . Most parents think about wanting to hit their kids. It is about you and about your anger. The hitting of the child is only sats fisfying and useful to you. Thats something that i am not saying. That is something that is fact ive dont do it. Because it doesnt work. I am married to a more sophisticated person. She dent waidnt want that. I did an hour on this with yale behavioral, google it, adam kazden, no question that hitting a kid, doesnt make them learn better. I dont believe that. Why . Because i think, i think we tend to sort of get polarize add but this. We go to extremes. If you spank some one, my gosh, people say it is aabuse. I think there is a happy medium. Had this conversation with my mother last night. She said when i was raising you, sometimes, as a single mother, after my dad died, some times you just wouldnt listen. If i yelled. If i gave you positive reinfo e reinforceme reinforcement, the only thing that would get your attention, hey. I am trying to tell you to do something that is going to hurt you. You are running up and down the stairs. Eventually that running up and down the stairs will hurt you m more than me spanking you. Spanking and Corporal Punishment worked on you. Despite. I want to training, i hate to do this, with, with my dog. And, fear is the same thing. The dog is in south carolina, another story. But, it doesnt matter whether it is fear or what have you. Im saying this because it stops you from doing it. The same thing, when my nephew was running, about to run in traffic. Yelling at him, getting his attention. He is thinking you are running behind him. You say dent do ont do it agai. In that moment. Does it teach you in the lorng term. A good stern talking to, also send a message from your parents. You actually learn the lesson. I dont disagree. You can be scared of your parent. Yelling or talking in a stern voice. Some kids listen to that. Other kids dont. I dont think there is a bible. Each individual, thats why it is called individuals. Because we are all different. Definitely all different. We can hold hand and pray on it later on. What i am trying to say is this. This is not a matter of opinion. You teach a kid when you hit them, oh, well that got my attention. No it scared you. But i love my mother and wound up being fine. You were fine despite that. Despite that happening to you. You were fine. The research is clear. 80 of preschoolers in the country are spanked. It is easier for the parent. Its cultural. Satisfaction. Your parents did it to you. You are arguing. That you do what you learn. My parents didnt beat me. Didnt abuse me. It was to get my attention. People say you should talk to your kids. Give positive reinforcement. Why cant you say, guess what, little chris, i didnt want to hit you . Didnt want to spank you, but that was the own thing that, the only way that got your attention. That is a great rationale. It is teaching a child that violence has a necessity some times in life. I dont think it is violence. You are hitting some one. Spanking. This is not violent. Thats not violent. What is it then . What is it . Other than an invitation to a butt kicking. More violent if i get hit by a car, more violent, fall down the stairs and break my had. If you have to grab a child at moment of crisis. I would say what i think is interesting, parents dont realize is that as parents you hold all the cards. You have all of the power. You tell your kid when theyre going to eat. You tell your kid when theyre going to go to bed. Starve our kids. Sleep deep priprive. You dont have to hit them. You hold all of the you can take away something. You can take away a privilege. Send them to their room. Tell them no more television. Whatever it is. You didnt have to rely on hitting. I want to make this perfectly clear. Im not saying. That should be a last resort. Over the last couple days of watching what is going on and doing research and looking at pictures from Adrian Peterson i evolved. Hey, you can spank your kid. We as society need to reexamine that. It is not something, in all cases you shouldnt do it. We shoe not do thuld not do tha. You evolved, means what . My initial reaction. I was a kid this is how i was treated. I saw the evidence for at least, from my own personal, experience is, this. But, i think that we need to reexamine that. For me as an africanamerican. The question is where did you learn that from . Learned from the slave master . Getting the switch . Being beaten . Is that how is that a rationale . It is. I keep hearing this. Well, maybe it was passed down from slave culture. Why would that be a rationale to continue a practice like this . Isnt that the last thing you would want to continue . Some people had to go get the whip. Why not break the cycle . Thats what i am saying. Telling you. I keep hearing that as justification. Dont think justification. Part of the story. Part of the narrative now. Part of something. Not a justification. It was part of the culture maybe and that by now saying we shouldnt do it it indicts your grandma and your mother in a way that you dont want to do. True, not just the south. It is everywhere. How do we know . The law recognizes one ability to hit outside of self defense. And it is a child. State to state, varies, some allow paddling in school. But new york state allows it within an open hand. It is so primitive. My one regret about the coverage so far that we have ben doien d covering it heavily and well. This is one of those actual, teachable moment. What we are doing is relying on a cultural stereotype about how we make people good people. That just doesnt hold waltter y more. Thats what i mean by extreme. How you make people good people. Doesnt mean you are a bad person or good person because you dont listen. Thats really not it. In the moment, people react. As i said you have to do what you have to do. You dent hatont have to do . You should examine. You dont have to do it. Then i fall down the stairs and break my head. You think the thing that keeps you from falling down stairs, because some one beat your you didnt fall down the stairs. [ both talking at once ] you said some one beat my ass, some one didnt beat my ass. My mom spanked me. That is not a beating. Children will mimic whatever behavior. Whatever behavior you model for them. So if you spank them. Then you as an adult will spank your children. If you yell at them. You will yell at the kids on the playground. Thats my point in fact. They say the heightens aggression. Of course it does. Kids subjected to corporal. A beating does. A spanking doesnt. If you ignore their bad behavior they will ignore you. Same thing. Yes, whatever you model for them. If you ignore their bad behavior, usually curtails it. Usually bad behavior is reaching out for attention. If you spank them in the moment it scares them. In the moment they dont want to do it. In the moment they dont want to happen again. Let me ask you, don lemon. When you were a kid after one of those episodes would happen would you never do it again . Or would you think to yourself i have to figure out how to do this where i dont get another spanking . Honestly . Honest. Probably never do it again. Knowing how bad i was, probably a combination. Not kidding you. You are hedging it undercuts your position. We are being honest. Just told you, i evolved over the past couple days. I wouldnt do it again. Because i didnt want to getten trouble. But you must have done it again. Because you kept getting in trouble. For different things. Thats the point. Done is interesting. 48 hours ago he started with, it worked on me. I fell in line. It works on us. This is our culture. And now tonight you are, saying different. I wish everybody was evolving as quickly as don is. Theyre not. Of i want to got this clear. It is prevalent in have riff the africanamerican community. It is prevalent everywhere. Not just socioeconomics. This guy, alan kazden, it is yale. R i did go to yale. He said this to me. You want to spank your kid. Go ahead. Spank your kid. Know this, you are doing it because it makes you feel better, it does nothing good for the kid. I dont think there is anything that makes a parent feel good in their right mind. When you are angry, you want to hit. That doesnt come from anger. I dont want to see what happens itch ive dont didnt. See you tomorrow morning on new day. Thank you, chris cuomo, anchor from new day. We will be right back. Missed you guys, good to see you. A good talk. I haits tough, but severive managed. Ease. Think i carried you eunmy body for 9 months so you can roll your eyes at me. I will roll that little head of yours down on the floor. You dont know who you are fooling with. I will beat you until you cant grow anymore. A lot of parents are at hope, going amen, brother. Well you, know, that was from a concert in 1983, bill cosby himself that led directly to the cosby show. His whole point of view parenthood in that film was the basis for the show.
