Confirmed cases. The director general says, this is not a time for fear. This is a time for taking action to prevent infection is and save looifrz n lives now. At a News Conference yesterday, President Trump said we are prepared and he hopes it doesnt spread, but the Health Officials say it has the potential to spread quickly. There are no deaths in the 60 cases across the country, but with a virus like this, it is unknown how many people may have it and not know it right now. In sacramento, california there is evidence of a first patient contracting the virus without traveling to a foreign country, and this is important, because experts say this kind of Community Spread can be the Tipping Point that leads to a pandemic. In the meantime, other countries are taking drastic measures. In japan, they are closing schools for all of march in an effort to protect vulnerable children. And iran has closed its borders to all chinese citizens. We have a team of korncorrespons and analysts who are standing by with new reporting on this. Lets talk about the coronavirus and how its hitting the global economy, because in the u. S. , the stock market is on pace for its worst week in october of 2008 when finances caused the worst week in stock history, the dow and the nasdaq down again for the sixth day, and alison kosik is on wall street for us. Tell us how the dow is getting so much attention and having so much impact. Reporter u. S. Companies this year are expected to post zero Profit Growth this year. Now, Goldman Sachs basing its forecast on the likelihood that the impact of the coronavirus could be more widespread than first thought. That is what its basing its estimates on. Its saying s p 500 companies could post a 13 plunge this year in profits, and its not ruling out a recession, either. Now, not everyone is that bearish. Fact researchers found analysts who expect earnings to rise 17. 7 . Were already hearing from a lot of Big Name Companies like microsoft and Anheuser Busch saying supply chain disruptions could cause companies to miss their estimates. Of course, we did hear from apple last week saying msimilar that they will miss their targets because of it, and there could be a shortage of iphones as well. It looks like estimates are bullish on meds. I want to talk about how this is affecting the economy, this coronavirus, with the editor of the washington post. This assessment by Goldman Sachs is pretty groundshaking here. Its really hitting home that the danger of the coronavirus isnt just what do i do to make sure i dont get it, but its a danger to the economy and its a danger to the pocketbooks of americans. Thats right, and when you mentioned the Global Financial crisis, its kind of the same thing in terms of community fear. When people see their portfolios and 401 k s go down this quickly, theyre going to pull back. They wont redo their kitchen and might not buy that new car. That snowballs and has a big impact on the country, and maybe they stop investing and it becomes a big mess. This all happened within the last couple weeks. When youre looking at industries that are being affected, and some are actually having positive effects of this makes sense, right, if theyre a pharmaceutical company. Who is getting hit here . The big manufacturers who rely on the Global Supply chain, maybe they import a lot of parts overseas or they count on sales overseas. We were counting on shipping a lot of products in this china trade deal. Obviously travel companies are being hit really hard, Cruise Companies as well. Its going to start in the Consumer Spending area, and then its going to snowball out more and more to other companies, especially the manufacturers who rely on this supply chain and getting products quickly. I think what most people care about is, is my job stable . How does this trickle down, and when does it, when do you expect it would start hitting that . Weve had such low unemployment and the stock market has been so high that you wouldnt think it would take much to have an impact in those areas. We havent heard companies having to resort to that yet. The real pain in the stock market has only happened in the last few days. But if there is no growth in the next year, if this Goldman Sachs prediction is correct, what do you expect . It will have a negative effect on the labor market, and people are not out spending money. If restaurants are not having customers as much, then of course those employers will let those workers go, they will stop spending money, and they will lose money, too, because it can snowball quickly when you have the Unemployment Rate at 3 where its at right now. Damian, we really appreciate your insight on this. Thank you. Thank you. The big concern among Health Officials is the Community Spread. This is when a virus spreads from person to person in a new Community Without any travel link to an affected region. Thats what were seeing in california. Lets talk to elizabeth cohen. Shes our senior medical correspondent. This particular patient were talking about, elizabeth, is a single patient, but this also means the virus has made a very important leap. Right, this is the day people will remember when they write the history of this outbreak, brianna. This patient showed up at uc davis in sacramento, california, ask davis, rightly so, quickly on the day they were admitted said, wow, we have a patient with pneumonia, a cough, theyve been sick for a while. They ordered a test from the cdc and the cdc did not do it initially. The cdc has been focused on testing people who traveled to china or are in close contact with someone who traveled to china, and this patient did not fit this definition. The cdc did, after a few days, do the testing, and it took a while when they reported the results. Some time passed s, and that is not good. That is hopefully changing quickly. Today there are more labs able to do the testing than just a few days ago. In the next couple days, there will be even more labs that can do this testing so you wont have this kind of wait, hopefully. Certainly what this points out is that people can get this virus even if they havent traveled to china, even if they dont know anyone who has traveled to china or any of the coronavirus hot spots. That means, really, that anyone could potentially be at risk. All right, elizabeth cohen, thank you so much for that update. Were joined now by amy compton phillips. She oversees Clinical Care at 51 hospitals and she is part of the team that created coronavirus patient 1 in the u. S. Doctor, thank you so much for coming on to talk about this. Your hospital, st. Josephs, which is just outside seattle confirmed the first case of the coronavirus in the u. S. Your team has treated additional patients. What is your biggest concern as you hear there is this first u. S. Case of unknown origin . Well, the biggest concern is we have to be ready, right . So in the health system, were First Responders in this world, and we see a lot of patients during flu season, which is still is right now with cough, fever, shortness of breath. And the challenge is going to be how do we tease out people with just the regular cold with the flu and with coronavirus. Its going to be real critical getting access to that testing ability sooner rather than later. Were hearing some labs arent even online today, right . Theyre coming online quickly, which is key. But, as is the case with this individual in california, it is missed and there is this extensive incubation period, what would you expect to see for people contracting the coronavirus . The risk is going to quickly accelerate. Were advising people what they know they need to do, anyway, but its not in our culture to do it, and that is, if youre sick, stay home. Cover your cough, wash your hands frequently. Make sure youre doing those things that if you have an infection, we dont want you to pass it to other people, and that is raised up to more importance than it is normally, because if what you have is a communityacquired coronavirus, we need to make sure were containing that spread. Thats what places in italy are trying to do right now. Thats why theyre cancelling large gatherings and ensuring we cant have Rapid Transmission of this novel infection because it really is we cant prevent it at this point, but we need to do everything we can to contain. I do think, especially as what were seeing with the stock market, were seeing this case in california, i think people are starting to pay more attention this week to the coronavirus and how this could impact them individually. I know when people think of an outbreak, doctor, they think about recent examples like the Ebola Outbreak which was pretty quickly contained in the u. S. There were two people who died. They also think of sars, which was also relatively quickly contained and it didnt kill anyone here. So put this coronavirus into perspective for us in terms of how quickly it has spread, how often it kills someone and just, i guess, how difficult it is to contain. Its a great question, because we do really need to calibrate our fear, right . Like, ebola is incredibly deadly and if you get it, you had really high odds of having a lifethreatening infection and or dying. In the u. S. People didnt die as often as they did in africa, but still, its a horrible infection. That means because its so lethal, people are not well enough to be out in the community passing it around to others. So one of the challenges with covid19 is that people get it, and often for them its like the flu, its like a bad cold. Its not as severe. So people are out in the community and transmitting it further. It has a higher mortality rate, as we can tell right now from the data particularly coming out of china. The mortality rate is somewhere between 2 and 3 , probably, which is significantly higher than the flu strains out right now, so it is more deadly but its not nearly as deadly as the sars and mers epidemics that had mortality rates at 20 and 30 . What that means is people are out and about more and able to spread the germs further, which makes it harder to contain the epidemic because there is more opportunities for transmission from person to person. Thank you so much. Its an important perspective and we will take your advice. If youre sick, stay home. We appreciate it, dr. Compton phillips. Thank you. Candidates are there hoping for the win on saturday, but others are preparing for super tuesday. Michael bloomberg has rallies in arkansas and utah. If sanders were to win South Carolina it is a long shot, according to the polls but still, this is a race that would consolidate. There would be little to stop him from running up a delegate count next week. Even so senator Elizabeth Warren says shes taking her candidacy all the way to the convention. I was going to spend 100 of my time with folks, and i make my phone calls as other candidates do. And the phone calls i make are the people who pitched in 5 or 25. As long as they want me to stay in this race, im staying in this race. Ive done a lot of pinky promises out there, so i have to stay in there. Cnn correspondent abby phil. Phillip is live for us in greenberg, South Carolina. Set the scene for us ahead of this pivotal primary. Reporter South Carolina seems to be all about what happens with joe biden. This is where his campaign has staked everything in his performance in this state. The campaign is exuding all kinds of confidence going into the primary on saturday, but they are also raising their own bar. Jim clyburn, the congressman from South Carolina, who endorsed joe biden yesterday, saying repeatedly he believes biden needs a significant win if he is going to go into super tuesday with the momentum that he will need in order to stop Bernie Sanders, which has become a big priority for a lot of these other candidates. So all the other candidates are still fighting for votes here on the ground because they know there are quite a few undecided voters here in the state, and there are Big Questions about how big of a margin joe biden wins by if he wins the state, and then what happens with the rest of the candidates . For candidates like Amy Klobuchar and pete buttigieg, the question for them coming out of this state is, can they make progress showing they at least have a pulse with nonwhite, purely africanamerican voters in this state . That is going to be part of the narrative as they head into super tuesday, but brianna, as you pointed out, a lot of these candidates are already in other states. They are signalling to reporters like myself and others that they are in this not just for super tuesday but beyond. I think whatever happens on saturday, every single candidate is going to try to make a case that they ought to be in it at least three days later through super tuesday and even farther beyond that. Its become a question of whether or not they can stay in this race and pick up delegates so that they can make a case that Bernie Sanders is not going to have an insurmountable delegate lead after super tuesday. Thats been the big talk not just among democrats back in washington but among the candidates here on the ground in South Carolina. Brianna . Abby, thank you so much in South Carolina for us. Many delegates in washington are watching the race in South Carolina, theyre watching the upcoming super tuesday races with trepidation. Theyre worried not a single senator has endorsed sanders. Some warning that if sanders becomes the democratic nominee, moderate voters could vote for republicans and wipe out the democratic gains of the last midterm election. I want to bring in congressman seth molton to talk to us now. You actually warned that if the democrats had a liberal platform, it would be hard to beat President Trump. I want to know what you think as you see joe biden and senator sanders lagging behind, even as joe biden leads the race in South Carolina. I think joe biden coming back will start this weekend, its going to start saturday, and were going to see in South Carolina that he can build a Winning Coalition that we need to beat donald trump. We have to turn out the base, we have to also appeal to moderates. Hes the best candidate who can do that. After hesi elected the next president , we need a unifying leader in the white house. We have the exact opposite of that right now in President Trump. Congressman clyburn of South Carolina endorsed biden the other day, an incumbent endorsement, and he said if sanders is in the house, were in trouble. What do you hear from your colleagues who come from more competitive districts saying there . I can certainly tell you my colleagues are concerned. We want a unifying leader at the top of the ticket because we have to build that Diverse Coalition that democrats always need in order to win. Joe biden can clearly do that. Thats why im behind him. Its so important that we beat donald trump, and its so important that we bring this country back together again when we do. When you look at these tough competitive districts, these house seats that i supported in 2018, these are leaders. They have to go out and get independents and republicans to vote for them as well, and they need someone at the top of the ticket that can bring together that coalition, that can not only win the presidency but make sure we hold onto the house and bring back the senate, too. Do you think we lose the house if senator sanders is the nominee . I dont think we lose, but i think its harder. The nonew york times has interviewed delegates and they say that biden has had late campaigning. John grey said arkansas was, in my opinion, going to be a default biden state. He hasnt been here. Of all the campaigns, the least organized in arkansas is biden. What do you think of that . Were looking for an experienced leader who can get the job done both in the election and afterwards. Thats not much more than any other Campaign Organization is on the ground in arkansas right now. I want to talk to you about a moment you had yesterday questioning the defense secretary mark esper. This is a comment you made to him at the end of your questioning. Lets listen. Mr. Secretary, when you took this job, did you take that oath with the president or the constitution . The constitution of the united states. Ive taken that oath many times in the 45 years of my professional life. It must be difficult having to live with the west point honor code. That quote, no cadet shall lie, steal or tolerate those that do when working for this president. Mr. Chairman, i yield back. Thank you. You, of course, are someone who knows a thing or two about combat and about service with your past in the military. I wonder, when you had that moment with him, you clearly have a frustration with him. You have a frustration with the administration. What is it in particular that was, i guess, motivating what you said there to him . If you want to be in this administration, and especially if you want to be on trumps cabinet, youve got to be willing to stand up to him. Obviously, thats not what trump is looking for. He doesnt want ascent. I said, you have big shoes to fill, because youre following secretary mattis. The most important thing secretary mattis did was not just bring a wealth of military knowledge to the job, not the ability to talk about military awareness, it was him standing up to trump. I asked him, mark esper, are you willing to stand up to mr. Trump and tell him what is right for our country and our troops . I dont know if esper is doing that. He told us, for example, there would be no retaliation against Lieutenant Colonel vindman for testifying under oath as he had the constitutional responsibility to do, in the trump investigation, in the impeachment inquiry. He went ahead and fired him. He even fired his brother simply for being his brother. Where was the secretary of defense to stand up for Lieutenant Colonel vindman, one of the Great American heroes who serves your honor the secretary in the department of defense . Congressman, thank you so much for joining us. Congressman seth moulton. So democrats are slamming President Trumps handling of the coronavirus. Leaders are questioning what they call his chaotic response to the outbreak that has now reached the u. S. They say his funding for it falls short, and he is more worried about politics than Public Health. Lauren fox is on capitol hill. Lauren, tell us what youre hearing there. Reporter basically nancy pelosi, speaker of the house, has made it very clear shes been frustrated with the president in terms of his response. And part of that is the fact that republicans, and i will tell you democrats as well, feel a real disconnect from what theyre hearing from public Health Officials in the cdc and hhs and what theyre hearing from President Trump on the podium. Basically their concern is he cares a little bit more about what the markets are doing than he cares about preparing the public for what they could experience here in the u. S. Heres what nancy pelosi had to say earlier today. Unfortunately, up until now the Trump Administration has made a chaotic response to this outbreak. Were coming close to a bipartisan agreement with how we can go forward. That is a good start but we dont know how much we will need, but hopefully not so much more because prevention will work. Reporter and, of course, the bright spot, brianna, has been the fact that appropriaters, republicans and democrats, are working hard behind the scenes. Theyre having conversations with hhs about what they should do on the ground, whether it comes to allocating more money when it comes to the coronavirus. The number theyre aiming for will not be 1. 8 billion. Chuck schumer says it also will not fall to 2. 5 billion, and were told those discussions will continue through the weekend, brianna. Right now airports in the u. S. Are screening only passengers flying in and out of china, but now that theres been a confirmed report of someone contracting the coronavirus without traveling tie fo a fore country, there could be changes. Martin savage is at hartsfieldjackson Atlanta International airport. Martin, tell us what this could mean. It is possible. List could be expanded and the impact for International Travel could be significant. There were talks last night about expanding that check, whether it should include south korea and italy, and they said thats not going to happen. In fact, the cdc is still only monitoring passengers from china. This airport here is one of 11 National Ports of entry where the screening takes place. When a passenger arrives, they are checked with a thermometer. They are also checked to see if they exhibit any symptoms of the coronavirus. If they pass that, then theyre allowed to move on. There is a travel restriction. If youre a Foreign National and youve been in china the last few weeks and youre attempting to come to the u. S. , you will be denied entry. But if youre an american citizen, you will be allowed to go if you pass those checks. Its possible you could be put into quarantine, but thats on a casebycase basis. Some say the checks could expand, and if that happened, the impact would be huge, brianna. It would be gigantic. Martin savage, thank you so much. Empty streets. Iran says its Vice President of women and Family Affairs has tested positive for the virus, and her positive result comes just hours after she attended a Cabinet Meeting on wednesday where she sat feet away from iranian president hussein rouhani. Everyone you see in that Cabinet Meeting is being tested and it will get the results this weekend. Irans Health Minister had already tested positive. His results came one day after he was seen profusely sweating. You see him dabbing his face at a News Conference about the virus. Theres two members of parliament who have also been diagnosed with the virus and a top iranian cleric has died. There are now more than 82,000 confirmed cases of coronavirus around the world. Theres nearly 3,000 people in ma Mainland China who have died from it. In europe, 11 cases of coronavirus that trace back to italys Northern Region where there are 25 confirmed cases. Nicolo joins us from milan. You are outside italys red zone, outside milan. This is an area where it is the worst. So you are outside of that, but daily life has certainly been clearly affected for you. Tell us about what you are dealing with as your sort of red zone neighbors have a 14day quarantine and things that are obviously more extreme. What are you dealing with . Good afternoon. First of all, i would like to send a positive message. I live in the center of milan, so the red zone is around 40 miles out. What i have to say is that the government has been taking some precautions, measures to make sure that we dont have a huge contagion as well in the milan area. Obviously were going through some restrictions, so in my area, we dont have, you know, very significant ones in the sense that at this moment, theyve been closing some bars, pubs and movie theaters and theaters in general. What also the government is trying to do is to sort of avoid having people gather in places where its quite crowded, so to make sure the contagion doesnt get worse. Were seeing pictures of places outside of milan where normally you would expect more people to be gathered. Is it strange to see the streets emptier than they are, and give us a sense of how worried are you at this point in time and if you feel like yeah, just how worried are you at this point in time . I think the people here in milan are a little bit worried in the sense that obviously we follow the news and try to see how the situation is evolving. But in the end you see people walking in the streets. Its not like milan is a ghost town, not at all. People are trying to live almost as normal. Also bewere changing a little t our behaviors. You dont see a lot of people using public transportation, you see people wearing masks, you see these sort of things, but i would say in general, we feel like obviously this is going to be we have some restrictions, and they will be temporary. We just have to go through this period of time, but no one you dont see, like, any sort of panic around. Everyone is i mean, we also have to think about the fact that in general we know that the people with the virus, were talking about less than. 01 of the population that is currently in quarantine. Were not talking about huge numbers, so people are worried but no one is panicking, and now as we get here, we know that the government and all the doctors are trying to take care of the situation here in the north of italy. Were slowly trying to adapt to these new situations. So, for example, this weekend last weekend many sports events, for example, were canceled. Right now gyms are closed as well, and companies are asking employees to work from home if they can. So this is sort of a new situation for us, and were trying to adjust to it. But i would say that really there is no nothing to really panic. People are worried, obviously, but we hoped we would get back to a regular and normal situation. As you said, worried but not panicking. Nicol spooirks vezzoso, thank you from milan. Thank you. Plus, teachers and children among those killed in airstrikes on nearly a dozen schools in syria. Vo while other candidates argue about health care, Mike Bloomberg has a record of doing something. As mayor, he protected womens reproductive rights. Expanded Health Coverage to 700,000 new yorkers. Mike bloomberg a record on Health Care Nobody can argue about. Mike im Mike Bloomberg and i approve this message. It is a divisive time in american politics, but there are four lawmakers who have crossed party lines to get americans out of their homes and into the their communities. They have introduced a bill that would provide instate tuition for ameri corp. Volunteers, this proposal also offers hiring incentives for those willing to serve, the military yes, but it also means the government, philanthropic and faith based groups as well. Lets bring in congresswoman chrissy hulihan, an air force veteran who worked through teach for america and congressman michael walds who is the first green beret in congress. Thank you so much to both of you for coming on to talk about this. You clearly as you broaden this idea of service here beyond the military, beyond military service, are stressing that there isnt enough service and i wonder why you think that is a problem that you want to change. Well, look, i think theres all kinds of goodness that came from previous generations that came from the draft. This bill does not propose to make it mandatory. Incentivizin ways you laid out. Young people learn leadership, teamwork, discipline, and importantly it helped us see past our differences in that you brought together all aspects of American Society whether you were from the inner city or a farm on indiana or jewish kid from brooklyn, how do we broaden that to whether youre serving in National Parks or inner city tutoring to get back to that goodness we had in previous generations. Its so interesting to hear from you on this because you have served in the military and also in other ways. Service comes in all forms, and if couldnt be more important right now where our nation really needs some healing and to be brought together that we recognize that military service is not the only way to help people, and i did serve through teach through america. I was a chemistry teacher and my analogy is that molecules need to collide in order to react with one another. Right now were not colliding with each other at all in our society. Were largely sitting on our couches in our cyber bubbles, and were not able to see that everybody is really genuinely pretty much the same and we all need to be more mission focused rather than divisive. If i could just add to that, this really came home to me when a veteran that i became very close with, an older veteran coming from the segregated south told me that the first africanamerican, the first black man he ever spoke to in his life was his bunk mate in the navy, right, and then they became lifelong friends. Again, its that forcing function in our society that weve gotten away from now that weve moved away from the draft. I dont think we should go back to that. How do we incentivize all americans to come together. I think im a much better person and im a much better servant because i grew up in a military and served and served again in teach for america. The multiplying effect of that individual person of service on all the other lives they touch as they reach out to their communities is impactful for the nation at large. I agree with you on that. I am part of a military family myself, i am a better citizen and a better journalist because of being part of that. We appreciate you both for coming on to talk about this. Thank you, guys. Thank you so much. Thank you for having us. If you have a comment or a story idea for homefront, please email them to me at homefront cnn. Com.
