Why trump and kim jongun are taking a break for now. Joe biden is taking to defend his recent drop in the polls. Im still leading nationally. If you come in third or fourth in the first two, a caucus and a primary, that doesnt just knock you out of the box. Were just getting going. Nevertheless, the former Vice President seems to be feeling the pressure. He has unleashed a fresh new set of attacks against senator Bernie Sanders. Hes also got a blistering campaign out against Pete Buttigieg in which he criticizes the former south bend, indiana mayor for his lack of experience on the world stage. Both Vice President biden and former mayor buttigieg have taken on top threats. Under threat of nuclear iran, joe biden helped negotiate the iran deal. And biden helped regulate pet chip scanners. In the meantime, klobuchar hauling in her polling, and shes also saying buttigieg doesnt have the experience to be president. I think the added experience i have is 12 years in the u. S. Senate. It is actually passing bills. The sharpened attacks continue as Bernie Sanders maintains a lead in New Hampshire followed by Pete Buttigieg. Jessica dean is in New Hampshire. Jessica, were that would people want to see joe biden. Tell us about that. Reporter yes, people want to see a more aggressive joe biden and they want to point out that Bernie Sanders and Pete Buttigieg are unelectable. Therefore, cheering joe biden for pushing back. He made a lot of ads which we saw this weekend. Its the first time weve seen joe biden go this hard against his rivals. Up until this time, hes stopped himself from going that hard at them, but certainly attacking Pete Buttigieg on his experience, and also Bernie Sanders coming back to medicare for all, coming back to how do you pay for it, things like that that weve heard over the campaign trail, but it certainly got more concentrated this weekend. And look, the Biden Campaign is ready, brianna, to move to South Carolina and nevada where they think theyre in much better positions there where its a more diverse electorate, but they have to get through New Hampshire first, and well see how that all comes together tomorrow when everybody starts voting. All right. Its almost here. Jessica dean, thank you for that report. This just in to cnn, were learning that senator Bernie Sanders has officially challenged part of the results out of iowa. Right now the updated vote numbers from last weeks caucuses show former mayor Pete Buttigieg maintaining a narrow lead winning most delegates while senator sanders remains in second place. We have ryan nobles who has been following the Sanders Campaign. Tell us what youre hearing, ryan. Reporter brianna, this does not come as a surprise. A Sanders Campaigner told us last night they fully intend to look at some of these precincts and ask for a partial recanvass of the final vote totals in iowa. These vote totals show Pete Buttigieg with a slight edge in the number of democrats that go to the National Democratic convention. That shows who ends up being the democratic nominee. In a statement that came out a few minutes ago, the Sanders Campaign officially confirmed they filed a protest in that democratic party. In that statement, a Senior Adviser to Bernie Sanders and his Campaign Said that they believe that once this full accounting of the discrepancies that they find in the idps results that ultimately the Sanders Campaign and the Buttigieg Campaign will leave iowa with the exact same number of delegates. So, brianna, the question is, is this worth all the trouble . The Sanders Campaign believe it does and it is important because we dont know how this delegate math is going to work out. Certainly there are thousands of delegates that are at stake in the course of this very lengthy primary practice, but they do not want to let even one delegate slip away. Theyve invested millions of dollars and millions of hours from their volunteers and paid staff in iowa, and they want to see that come to fruition. Theyre committed to making sure a full and accurate count of iowa takes place. But while theyre not giving up on iowa, theyre very much focused on what happens here in New Hampshire. A very busy schedule today. They feel like theyre in a strong position and theyre hoping to come out with a victory here tomorrow night. Brianna . Very friendly toward sanders is New Hampshire. Ryan, thank you very much for that report. There is scrutiny in these first races. Who won, who is going to win, how much did they win by, will they win by . We thought we would visit some past primaries to look at the outcomes. We have Senior Analyst mark preston to put all of this in context for us. Mark . Brianna, what they say is whats old is new, but like ryan was saying, lets take a look at the results from iowa, and this is why youre seeing the Bernie SandersCampaign Come out and challenge part of those results. It is. 1 difference right now between buttigieg and sanders, and in battle for delegates, that could be consequential. Thats why were seeing the Bernie Sanders campaign make a challenge on some of those delegates. Lets go back to 1992. When were talking about how long could this race go, what could happen . Go to tom harkin, favored in the center of the state, he wins iowa. Paul songus of massachusetts, he takes New Hampshire. Bob kerrey from nebraska, he takes south dakota. Bill clinton described himself as the comeback kid because at that time he was under an incredible amount of scrutiny because of the Gennifer Flowers controversy and also deference of the draft. He would not win his first primary until the third, when he won it in georgia, but that kicked off a whole spate of wins. From there he went on to win South Carolina and then he went on to win the super states. In that battle, brianna, as were talking, we shouldnt be looking alone at iowa and New Hampshire and say the race is over. This race could go on and on and on. What we should know as well, in this election, superdelegates. These are elected officials, governors, senators. Their vote is not as consequential this time as it has been in last elections. Theyve been deemphasized a little bit. Bill clinton used those superdelegates to help him win in 92. We wont see that this time around, but i tell you what, brianna, this race is far from over. It sure is, and thats a very good point about the superdelegates, mark. Thanks so much. I always love going back to the 90s, so i really appreciate that. 2020 candidate Michael Bloomberg is pulling out all the stops to win the election, and that would be money. We learned they spent more than 350 million in ads. Thats nearly double than what businessman tom steyer has spent. Its nearly 30 times more than what joe biden has spent. Joining me to discuss this is amy stoddard for real clear politics. How much of an advantage is this for bloomberg . Well, the money is always an advantage. When a week ago we hear that he wakes up, sees the iowa result and says, this is such a mess, this is clearly an opportunity. Lets double our staff and double our ad spending. Its stunning to us, right . But we knew he had the means and hes showing us his intention. As for the way hes doing it, this is a man that looked at the race many, many, many times in the past. Hes been a republican longer than donald trump, hes been an independent. He has assessed running for president many times and we knew that money would buy him effectiveness and buy him buzz. Everywhere a trump supporter will say, i keep seeing those bloomberg ads on facebook. The fact is, as mark said, this race is really fluid. People are not coalescing behind two choices. The moderate vote is much bigger than bernie, so its behind bloomberg and buttigieg. These delegates in these few early states, this is nothing, brianna. You dont start counting the real piles until march, and thats going to be the hugest, most significant four weeks, and thats where Mike Bloomberg is so well positioned. He gets lost in the conversation but hell soon be a factor. Bidens fourth place wins really wont hurt him if he rebounds to South Carolina and nevada and is a contender in march. Lets talk about this attack by senator Bernie Sanders on former mayor Pete Buttigieg for accepting big money donations from billionaires. This is how Pete Buttigieg is explaining himself. Well, bernie is pretty rich, and i would happily accept a contribution from him. Look, this is about making sure we bring everybody into the fight at a moment when were going to be going up against donald trump who, with his allies, are raising i think the other day they raised 25 million bucks in one day. This is the fight of our lives. Im not a fan of the Current Campaign finance system, but im also insistent that weve got to go into this with all of the support we can get. I wonder how effective of an attack line by Bernie Sanders do you think that is . Elizabeth warren tried this, and weve actually talked about this before. When she was trying to come from behind, she attacked buttigieg for having raised money in a wine cave and it completely boomeranged. The idea that this is a general election message is ridiculous. Its for a very small percentage of purists within the progressive wing of the democratic primary electorate. It makes Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren voters very happy. I think a lot of people agree with mayor pete, that if theyre supportive and they want him to beat trump in the fall, they say, thats right, we need every last dollar. It just doesnt resonate with a few in the left wing. Bernie sanders is attached to it. The Campaign Finance is a huge thing for him and for warren. And it reminds him of small donors so he can tout that. In the final decision for people to support him, i dont think it is. New calls to investigate President Trump firing impeachment witnesses and whether its retaliation for telling the truth. Plus, remember when republicans were furious over the suggestion that President Trump would retaliate against those who voted against him . Well, now that he is, why are they silent . And just in, the number of u. S. Servicemembers who suffered from traumatic brain injuries in the iran strike in iraq are rising sharply. We are live from the pentagon, next. Everything your trip needs, for everyone you love. Expedia. A book that youre ready to share with the world . Get published now, call for your free publisher kit today we ever breaking news now. Cnn is learning more than 100 servicemembers have been diagnosed with mild traumatic brain injury following irans missile attack on the alassad base in iraq last month. Thats at least 36 more cases than the pentagons most recent disclosure. Following the attack, President Trump said he didnt consider the injuries to be serious. He downplayed them as, quote, headaches. Lets bring in Barbara Starr now from the pentagon. Barbara, just tell us, do we have an idea of the extent of these injuries with these newer cases . Brianna, the pentagon so far basically referring to it as mild traumatic brain injury, but look, it can grow worse over time. We dont know. We dont even know at this point in terms of the more than 100 diagnosed cases how many troops have been able to stay on duty, how many had to be pulled off to get medical treatment, how many have been returned to duty. The pentagon not offering the Details Behind that number, though we are learning they do expect to announce this afternoon more than 100 diagnosed with this brain injury. I think its really important to point out, this is more than a month after the iranian Ballistic Missile attack on the alassad base in attack and it was that attack that sent huge blasts across the base. Troops were sheltered in bunkers, but the blast wave were so overwhelming, those bunkers were not sufficient to prevent these kinds of injuries. So what do you have here . What you have is more than 100 American Forces injured at the hands of the iranians. That by any measure would be a mass casualty, a mass injury attack, and the key question besides getting these folks treatment is what comes next . Howe do you prevent this from happening again . The u. S. , by all accounts, does not have yet permission from it ra the iraqis to put missile defenses at these bases if it were to happen again, and they need to work on the bunkers to protect these troops. These are old bunkers, very out of date, and there is a feeling that more defenses are needed and needed urgently. Brianna . So clear. Barbara. Thank you very much for this report from the pentagon for us. During his impeachment, republicans were offended that the president would retaliate for those who voted against him. The ambassador who testified under subpoena that there was a quid pro quo now fired. The decorated Lieutenant Colonel serving on the president s own Foreign Policy staff who testified about trumps phone call with the president of ukraine escorted off white house grounds. His twin brother also ousted from his white house job despite playing a role in the hearings. And the lone republican senator who voted to acquit the president of abuse of power now facing threats from his own party to smear him. Perhaps you are one who predicted some of this retaliation. Cnn reported last night that a trump confidant said that the gop said vote against the president and your head will be on a pike. That is, of course, democratic congressman and the lead adam schiff who told of a confidant and unleashed on the republicans for it. Head on a pike. Did anyone say anything close to that to you . Of course not. Ive never been more embarrassed about being in the United States senate than i am now. I think every Single Member of the Senate Republican conference, all 53 of us, simultaneously audibly groaned. Many of the senators who they were trying to communicate to were really upset about this. Hes saying ignore all the facts and youre only doing this because youre afraid of the president. Senator romney might differ with his colleagues. The white house sent out talking points after his vote, including this. Mitt romney threw aside principles to seek adulation from the left. Sadly, it was surprising as expedience has come to define his political career. Romney has a long history of flipflopping with no signs of principles to be found and the established media has been so consumed by their hatred of President Trump that for now they have anointed romney a resistance darling after bashing him for years. Then theres the tweets. Romneys judgment has been questioned. Romney has hurt Many Republican senators and the republicans for romney have left the gop, twisting in the wind. Joe mansion in West Virginia called him weak and corrupt. Mansion seemed the likely democrat to vote for impeaacqui but in the end he voted to impeach. Alexander vindman, a purple heart recipient, and u. N. Ambassador to the eu, gordon sondland, a donor who was handpicked by trump for that role. Republicans are standing by silently watching as their heads roll but just dont say their head is on a pike. Carrie cordero, former counsel to the u. S. Assistant attorney general. Lets talk about Chuck Schumer because obviously hes the top democrat in the senate, and right now he is asking for an investigation. He sent a letter to 74 different inspe inspectors general, requesting that there are investigations into this, quote, any and all instances of retaliation against witnesses who made protected disclosures of president ial misconduct. I wonder if any of you think it will go anywhere. What do you think . Im sure many has fallen on deaf ears. Remember schumer back in october wrote a letter to the army chief and chief of staff saying, listen, you have to put protections in place for people. They fear whats actually going to happen. His brother and no one could see that coming, but the notion of saying, look, if you want to encourage people to be forthcoming about the abuses of power, about corruption, about waste, anything, this is not the way to go to encourage people to be forthcoming. Everything is on the line, everything is at stake. Some of the inspectors general have shown themselves to be independent. Theyre supposed to be independent, they appear to be independent. I wonder if they do look into this, carrie, and something comes of this, does that do anything for future players . Thats the question. Lets say an Inspector General of one of these agencies, a department general, for example, says theres someone who wants to come forward with information to blow the whether i say he will on something going on in the administration, or retribution, what would develop . Remember, it was initiated by a whistleblower that went to the Inspector General, filed a report and then the white house tried to bury that report from ever getting into the hands of congress. So its appropriate for senator schumer to try to encourage the Inspector Generals to do their job, basically, and make sure that the work force that is in their agencies feels protected. But when people see whats happening, when they see the vindmans details being withdrawn, their detail to the National Security council being withdrawn and then being sent back to the department of defense, when people see an ambassador who is a political appointee immediately recalled the week after the verdict, individuals in these agencies are going to wonder whether their snp or jenz are legitimate vehicles for them to provide complaints. Republicans have been very silent about the firing. Some have defended them, senator Lindsey Graham among them. He suggested that vindman had some sort of deep state agenda. Lets listen. I think his reassignment was justified. I dont think he could be effective with the nfc. As much as i support our military people telling the truth when asked, its important they do. What have i learned in the last two years . Cia agents, department of justice lawyers, fbi agents have a political agenda and they acted on it. Hes never been asked questions, did you leak or did the whistleblower . People in his chain of command has been suspicious of him regarding his political point of view. I find this really an interesting line of attack, because vindman is a career military officer who has served his country with distinction. There is no sign that he has a political agenda. He has served both republican under both republican and democratic commanders in chief. He was working in the Trump White House as what was supposed to be very much an independent on loan from the defense department, right . And i think i find it especially interesting coming from graham. Hes got a legal background, of course, right, and hes not active Duty Air Force anymore, but hes in the reserves. Hes a military officer who clearly does have an agenda. I wonder what you think about this criticism. I think its unfair and hes conflating the last two years. Hes trying to work in the mueller report, things about the dossier, things about lisa and peter strzok, being somebody to talk about what he knew about that telephone call, and the conflation serves only one goal, to say, listen, this is all part of one great conspiracy witch hunt. Without that hes a very distinct and separate part of a question and answer session. He came forward on a subpoena, which is what youre supposed to do. So being conflated, they said this only really serves the president , not common sense. So there is some legitimacy to the point that lieutenant vindman would not have been able to be effective in his role in the white house anymore. What was completely inappropriate and vindictive and showing retribution is the fact they dismissed him immediately after the verdict, that according to reporting, they escorted him out of the white house grounds along with his brother who had no role, as far as we know publicly, in anything regarding the impeachment trial, at least. He was not a witness. And so its that retribution piece that was completely inappropriate. Whats surprising to me watching senator graham over these last couple years, as someone who worked in government with the National Security community throughout the 2000s and watching senator graham as such a defender of National Security agencies and a defender of the Justice Department and the rule of law, his adoption of these conspiracy theories about the deep state has been surprising to so many. Cnn is learning that President Trump does not want another summit with kim jongun before the election. Last time trump walked away emptyhanded and other delegate efforts have not come up with anything, either. Were joined by joseph eun and kylie atwood. Kylie, lets start with your reporting. What have you learned . We learned that President Trump told top advisers that he does not want another summit with kim jongun ahead of the president ial elections in november. These comments came at the end of last year after he was frustrated when the working level negotiations between the u. S. And north korea essentially fell apart with north korea pointing fingers at the u. S. , saying they hadnt come ready to negotiate. Both sides walked away nothing accomplished. They havent returned to the table. We saw an indication that President Trump is still disinterested in this summit last week when he gave lhis stae of the union address. He didnt mention north korea or kim jongun at all. Thats a stark contrast to last year, because youll remember President Trump used that address to the nation to announce he was going to be having his second summit with kim jongun. The important thing to consider is that he has his upcoming Reelection Campaign ongoing. And im told that the campaign doesnt feel that focusing on north korea is crucial to President Trump winning reelection. So that is an important piece of this puzzle. The other thing to consider, however, is that north korea continues to work on and perfect its Nuclear Program. We are hearing about a lot of testing, but just last month, a pentagon official said theyre developing new weapons and new Nuclear Capabilities as fast as anybody. So the threat still remains even though President Trumps thirst for diplomacy is not as keen as it once was. It has to be dealt with, ambassador, but it appears clearly this is an impasse. I wonder just how big of one it is. Is this dead, in your view . I think it is completely dead. I think kylies reports are really spot on. I would, in fact, go further and say this is almost still an initiative, because weve had, what, three summits so far, and theyve all been theater. You pull back the occcurtain an there is nothing there. So, really, the big question now is, if it is dead now and trump accepts it is dead and says so, what will be kim jonguns reaction . He wont be happy, because the only thing thats been keeping it alive, thats been checking kim jongun is trump keeps on saying, hes my good friend, i believe him, i trust him, i believe they will denuclearize. Now if trump says that out in public, i think you would see a very, very unhappy north korean leader. How do you think hes going to react when we look at what hes done in recent months, testfiring missiles and really ratcheting up his rhetoric . I think hes going to ratchet up pressure even before the elections. If the Administration Officials or if the trump folks believe that kim jongun will do nothing, i think theyre mistaken. Kim jongun needs to put the pressure on, so i do think the next move is with kim jongun, and you might see him do an icbm test or you might even see him do a nuclear test. So we could be in a very, very difficult situation even before the election. I wonder to both of you, as you look ahead here, is this, kylie, something where north korea is just sort of waiting . Theyre working on a Nuclear Program and waiting to see what the election brings . It could very well be that. I mean, they have turned down the heat when it comes to their tests recently. Theyre able to continue working on their program. We also know that North Koreans track domestic progress in the u. S. Extremely closely. Whoever is the president dictates what the policy is and dictates how the u. S. Treats the North Koreans. When i went to north korea just about a year and a half ago, they asked a lot about if President Trump had support from congress, and a number of political questions which sort of shocked me, but the reality is that it is a determining factor when it comes to their country and what theyre able to do with regard to their Nuclear Program. And i wonder, ambassador, to that point with so much curiousty about where his Political Support is just how significant this election is going to be for north korea and what they want to see. Oh, it is very, very significant. I think, as kylie said, they follow u. S. Politics very closely. They would, of course, hope that President Trump wins, because only he, i believe, can promise so much for them. But Election Results in u. S. Are very uncertain and a number of progress agreements with north korea have broken off as a result of changing administration. So North Koreans are calculating very carefully what happens. Another point, brianna, is that North Koreans are also worried. Even if President Trump wins, will he continue with the existing policy of engaging north korea, or will he veer off again back to fire and fury if President Trump doesnt get his way . Either way, they realize this is a tremendous gamble for them, which is why i think there will be further Development Even before the u. S. Elections in november. Well be watching along with you, ambassador yun. You and kylie, thank you so much. A purple heart recipient who testified in the impeachment investigation. Well talk about that next. An adviser to President Trump said the firing of two major impeachment witnesses was meant to send a message, that citing against the president is not permitted. Vindman and sondland were both fired on friday. I want to bring in mike jason who has served 24 hours, active duty in the army, and he commanded combat units in iraq and afghanistan and now a defense consultant at the pentagon. You have written about this before. You have heard the news of the firings and i wonder what your reaction is to this now . You defended vindman before, and what do you think . First off, thank you for having me. I think its important to clarify the language, firing. He is not out of the army, and that narrative is out there and its an accurate narrative and this is an officer that did his duty because he was told to do that, and hes there based on his skills, and this is a highly rated and experienced officer at the pinnacle of his career. Taking those two combined and what we saw last week, the optics very much snack of a punitive unnecessary humiliation, and not only that, his brother. Thats what i saw occur and the reaction i take away. His brother is also a Lieutenant Colonel, right . Yeah, thats right. They are both gone from the white house. I hear what you are saying, its not being fired, but this is not how you want to leave this post, right . Thats right. Seems like it would have been difficult for certainly Lieutenant Colonel vindman to handle the post. How do you think he should have handled it . Lets not kid ourselves on what really happened on friday. We saw the ambassador recalled at the same time, and things happen and we have details and soldiers all over the interagency serving, and sometimes things dont work out but they have clearances and they are active Duty Officers and you set a date and work out a transition, but you can walk out holding your head high on both sides. To me it looked designed to inflict humiliation, and thats what it looks like, cant vouch for that for sure. We have reporting that backs up that assessment as well. You and your family have personal experience with, and i want to ask you, we saw the pentagon is resizing upwards its number of Service Members who are suffering from traumatic brain injuries, and they are being called mild, but its 100, and its a number that keeps going up since the attack on the air base in iraq, and what do you think about this and what should people understand as we see this number revised upward . Tell us about your experience. Sure, technically, its significant because of the ballistics, and the military and department of defense takes this stuff very seriously. We have come a long way from the early iraq and afghanistan wars, and my kid brother was a rocket propelled grenade explosion and from the chain of command, it was to walk it off and take motrin, and describe the symptoms. Sure, its everything from you can get headaches to loss of feeling and numbness, and even affects to a great degree decision making, and short term memory and possibly long term memory, so it could be very significant if left untreated. We have learned from that, and so every soldier is screened for a baseline of brain activity prior to deployment and when an incide incide incident happens we check against that baseline. When you are watching the number be resized upward, are you inheartened, making you feel like they are taking it seriously . They are taking it seriously, and our soldiers are at risk and we need to make sure we have the right gear and intelligence and protection available. Appreciate you coming in. Thank you so much.
