Life. That is a tragedy. A Hardworking Police officer with a family man who took this job to do good, to make a difference in his Home Community, has now lost his chosen career. And that is a different kind of tragedy. In this case, the unintended consequence of mr. Garners death must have a consequence of its own. Therefore, i agree with the Deputy Commissioner of trials legal findings and recommendations. It is clear that Daniel Pantaleo can no longer effectively serve as a new york city Police Officer. Our reporter is falling all of the developments. Were there at what is this press conference that we saw. I think one of the things is we were expecting this. He said that he agreed with this police judge basically who recommended that he be fired. But hearing the Police Commissioner describe his rational and also what he thought Police Officers would think about this, it was incredibly insightful. I think some people are going to take issue with what they heard. Absolutely. People are going to take issue with what he heard. And you have to understand, the Police Commissioner here is someone who has been a Police Officer, was a Police Officer for 34 years. He wore a uniform. He patrolled in the streets of the bronx. He knows this city well. He has a unique relationship with many of the Police Officers at the nypd. He himself was a cop for so many years. He just went through the ranks. And he became the Police Commissioner. So what he is doing here is hes talking to really the members of the nypd. As much as this is for us and for the community, but he is also very concerned about what the rank and file is going to think of this decision. And i know as does brynn who has been talking to sources and Police Officers no one on the nypd, the rank and file certainly, theyre not happy with this decision. And he is concerned about what effect that will have on their every day jobs. Said i know many will disagree with this decision and that is their right. He is talking to the Police Officers, the people who serve this city. And the people who work for him. And he says, you know, he goes on to say there are absolutely no victors here. Not the Garner Family, not the kmu community at large and not the courageous men and women of this police department. That was a big point for him. Important to stand there and take as many questions as we saw. This was a very, very difficult decision for this Police Commissioner. I know some might disagree with that. This seems kind of clear cut. It slu been an easy decision for him. Certainly as we saw there from him, he was emotional at times. This was not an easy decision for him. I wonder if one thing that got lost in this was that, yes, this was about Daniel Pantaleos behavior and n. 2014 when he used a prohibited choke hold. But what are the things that we saw from this 46 page decision from this Department Investigation that recommended he be fired . Was this also about what the officer told investigators that he actually told internal affairs that he did not use a choke hold. So she said he was untruthful in how he went through this investigation internally. Yeah. And that is something that the Police Commissioner said he took into account all 46 pages of that report. Really going even before his decision the tick to being of the event that happened on that day from the second from the, you know, the time before this incident even happened in the area of Staten Island to the time this went down. Literally every minute that occurred. And then the fact he said he watched the video over and over and over again and could specifically point out the fact where it went wrong, where officer pantaleo was not in the right which was, of course, the judges decision. I want to echo for you, brianna. Ive been here in the room. I want to echo what he said. Sh was such a difficult decision. I mean, i can just feel it. You feel it in this room. He was emotional. I was sitting next to the executive staff here with the nypd. Some had their heads down when he said he was going to be determine natured. This is a decisioner the commissioner said he didnt make within, you know, the last couple of weeks. He said he made it just within the last couple of days taking into account all that he could but sticking to the facts like, of course, any cap has to do, right . All right. Stand by. I want to bring in Cheryl Dorsey to talk about all of this. She brings vast perspective, 20 years in the Los Angeles Police department before she retired as a sergeant bringing that to this conversation. What did you think of this decision today . Well, you know, this seems to be the final chapter but we dont know for sure. We dont know if pantaleo will be given an opportunity to get hired by another job like shelby did after she shot and killed two people after he shot and killed others. I understand the angst that the officers are feeling. You know, im a street cop. I no he that we want our leaders, our chiefs and commissioners to back us. But pantaleo made a decision. His refusal to let go of that choke hold, hes been terminated. He can no longer do that job on nypd or any other police department. You know, i think family members of eric garner watching that press conference, they are not going to walk away necessarily feeling good about this. To them, they lost the loved one. They dont really feel like even someone being fired is enough of a response. What do you say to them . Thankfully something was done right. There was a refusal to indict. So there is no criminal penalty for this. But there are truly no winners. This is not going to give the family any closure. While hell lows his jse his jo lives. He gets to enjoy his family, something the Garner Family has forever lost. All right. Cheryl, thank you so much. Cheryl dorsey with us there. I do want to talk now about three potential mass shooting plots that were stopped by law enforcement. Three young men, one in ohio, one in florida, one in connecticut and police say that some had the weaponry and all had the desire to try and kill as many people as possible. Lets go to jessica schneider. She has details on all three cases. In all three of these cases, officers were able to move in and make those arrests after tips from concerned citizens and people close to the defendants and in the next few minutes, were expecting to see 20yearold James Patrick riordans arraignment in ohio. He is charged with threatening to carry out a shooting inside a Jewish Community center. Its in a post where he showed himself as the gunman in a potential upcoming shooting at that community center. Now when a Police Officer was on an unrelated call that a girl approached that officer, showed him the Instagram Post and then set in motion this arrest. And reardons account also included White Nationalist content. Even attended the rallies in charlottesville in 2017 and he talked there to National Geographic in their documentary and his desire to build a white homeland. Then there is the arrest of brandon wagshaw. He is in nor wau, connecticut. He made mass shooting threats on facebook. Its the fbi tip line where he got that tip. He was trying to purchase large capacity rifle magazines from out of state. The fbi and local police in connecticut that launched an investigation and they discovered that wagshol was buying rifle parts online and then attempting to build his own rifle. When they searched his residence, they found a large number of weapons there. They were registered to his father and now wagshol is charged with four possessions of large magazines. Finally, an arrest in daytona beach, florida. This is Tristan Scott wikz. His exgirlfriend said he sent her a series of disturbing test messages where he threatened to commit a mass shooting. In the misaejessaged, he wanted open fire on a large group of people and already had a location in mind. Once police found the apartment, they found a hunting rifle and four rounds of ammunition. Right now wix is being held without bond n all of these cases, it was tips that alerted police to the potential danger and the threats from these men. And thats what enabled authorities to move in and thwart any plot before it was launched. Thank you so much for walking us through that. As republicans feel the pressure from americans who Want Congress to toughen gun laws in the midst a spate of Mass Shootings lawmakers are trying to blame left. They on tabled a memo of talking points put out by the House Republican conference. This instructs members to deflect questions about the rolfe White Nationalism and Mass Shootings even though the facts tell us something very different and so does the director of the fbi chris ray. This is what he told Congress Last month. I will take a majority of the domestic terrorism cases that we have investigated are motivated by some version of what you might call white supremacist violence. Nkt fin fact, 73 of extremi murders have been carried out by rightwing extremists. He is the Political Editor for the tampa bay times. You reported on this memo. Steve, why dont House Republican leaders want the rank and file conceding that White Nationalism is at play when facts bear out that obviously it is . If you look at the memo, its clear that the talking points they put forward is to shift the conversation from White Nationalism and the rise in extremism to more of an argument of both sides. The question is you are concerned about the rise in shootings by White Nationalists . They acknowledge that White National six a problem and something that, you know, the country needs to face. But then i also shifts to the conversation to quote violence from the left. So the shooting of congresswoman gabby giffords. Lets tut bsh we have a graphic of that that you just referenced this quote from the talking points. This is what it says here exactly what steve just laid out. So a spokes wwoman told you told the times that el paso part is a typo. It was supposed to say dayton. You point out in your report that aside, this isnt even correct when it comes to dayton or when it comes to these other events that are referenced here in this defense and this shift away from White Nationalism. Tell us about what you found. Yeah. You know, i think there is an important difference to make someones personal politics do not motivate the shootings or the actions. In the case of what happened in el paso, there is clear evidence that individual committed that crime because of, you know, his beliefs about antiimmigration and the rhetoric that he was spewing was echoing a lot of White National sentments. But in a lot of the other cases, there is evidence that someone may have, you know, voted for a democrat or supported certain politicians, the motivations of the crime are much less clear. And that certainly the case so far in dayton. And it has been the case as we have investigated incidents in colorado, arizona and these other ones that have been adescribed to the left in this memo. Any reaction from the House Republican conference you . Noted in your story you didnt get one at that point when it went to publish. I hadnt received one. The story got a lot of traction over the weekend. I didnt hear anything since. The spokesperson for the congressman who sent out the talking points to his constituents said, you know, these are we are concerned about violence on the left. There are shootings that are going on there and motivated from left as well. We just want to make sure that issue is raised and thats why we decided to share this with our kbints. Constituents. Steve, thank you. We really appreciate it does the president down play fears of a recession . Hear directly from economist whats they see happening. Appearing to be waging a full on assault on the idea that the u. S. Could be headed for recession. I dont see a recession. The world is in a recession right now. I dont think were having a recession. Were doing tremendously well. Our consumers are rich. I gave a tremendous tax cut. And theyre loaded up with money. Theyre buying. I saw the walmart numbers were through the roof two days ago. That is better than any poll. Thats better than any economist. In addition to a Global Economic slowdown thats going on, there are other signs of uncertainty including the bond market which is blasting out a warning last week when investors became concerned showing a lack of confidence by ditching out a short term bonds for longer term ones. And there you see the Dow Jones Industrial average is up right now about 300 points. At this point, it erased much of last weeks selloff. There are concerns over the trade war with china that sent markets plunging. With me to make sense of it is ken simonson. He is from the National Association for business economics and your new var numbers show that economists are split about it when you ask them is a recession likely to hit in 38 say next year. 34 say it wont happen until 2021. Tell us about this survey. The professional group of people that use economics in the workplace every day, and that would probably include you, that we do this twice a year. They have gotten more optimistic about the short term. 10 thought there would be a recession this year. Now only 2 . And for 2020, also got a little more optimistic. But for 2021, as you say, there are more there are people that think theyll see a recession that year. 38 think it will happen in 2020. 34 think it will happen in 2021. Why are they more optimistic about the near term . I think the consumers are indeed in good shape. Weve had job growth for a decade now. And that still seems to be quite strong. Inflation is small. People are taking home more and they spend that money. But at the same time, there are real reasons to be cautious or concerned about the outlook. This survey found that peoples expectation of the Global Economic growth path is slowing down. I think generally they expect u. S. Economic growth to be slower than it has been. And in particular, housing is one thing that is really lagging behind. Right. Ken, thank you so much. Really appreciate it. Ken simonson with us here. In what appears to be a veiled threat, President Trump is reminding foven news he calls the shots after the network comes out with a sppoll comes o showing the president in an unfavorable light. Chris, the president seems to have a lovehate relationship with fox. He loves them when they say good things about him. But he condemns them when they dont. Its important to remember with trum whap yp what you said. He only has two lenses on the world, for and against trump. So why fox and why now . Well, they released a poll last week. It showed the Approval Rating in the low 40s. That is consistent with all the other polling. It shows this graphic. Steve king is demanding an apology from the media and republicans after he made comments that humanity would not exist if it were not for rape or for incest. King says that he was misquoted. King defended himself over the weekend as he held town Hall Meetings including a town hall that only one person showed up for and here she is. Thank you so much for being here. I want to talk to you about this very unique experience. But first, lets have a listen to part of how this town hall that you attended went. You have the best audience ive ever had. Not one person has ever individually contributed so much to a town hall meeting as you, jessica. If i had a certificate, id bring you up here and give you an award today. I appreciate you being here. I appreciate the press being here today. I appreciate my staff who does a great job every day. Well close this thing out and go on to the next one. Thank you so much for being here, jessica. So jessica birch, thats how this town hall ended. Take us through your morning and your decision to attend this event because i think some people might maybe who are not familiar with iowa nice might be surprised to learn youre not actually a sport of king. So take us through your decision to go to this event. So earlier on friday i just saw the event against my across my facebook feed. And i just glanced at it. Then i went out that night. I was like, you know what . I should show up and just i didnt really plan on saying anything. I just wanted to be there and support of just the opposition of his latest remarks. So when i showed up there and i sat at the back of the room and no one else was there and he came back and shook my hand and i sat down and im like okay, well, im not going to leave. So i guess ill have to speak up. So you arrived at this community center. You only saw a few cars in the parking lot. You were the only person who was not part of his staff that was there sitting in the audience. So you decide to engage. So what did you hear from him . What did you want to talk to him about . So i know that hes been in the news and hes very controversial figure for his latest remarks. I was a little nervous to con front him on that. Just being the only person there. Also i just i just knew i had this opportunity and having him alone for an hour to ask him about issues a cared about. The first thing he talked about trade a little bit. But after that, i really got into the issues that i cared about. Such as talking about Affordable Housing and then kind of just snowballed into regular conversation and we talked about recreations and then i think i finished talking and asking about student loan debt. What did you think about what you heard from him . It was very different from i think maybe what you wanted to hear or what you think on the issues. It was different. A few times he would answer some of the questions in a round about way and not get to an answer. But since i was the only person there, i could actually just follow up directly and just ask him to clarify or ask him for more information. So i just had the unique opportunity to just try to get some more answers out of him than i guess other people would usually get. So what did you i know there was security there. Tell us what you said to the security folks as you left. It was really funny. I was leaving. I made a little joke. I was like oh, yeah, im sorry you had to come out this morning because im just such a rowdy person. The whole time i would say the whole town hall is just very peaceful. And sometimes it got a little, like, my questions were we would have an honest conversation about things. I didnt like his answers sometimes. But i didnt i just kept my cool and didnt get mad and they didnt find it funny that i was just they didnt laugh at my joke. The security. And tell us about what your friends thought. You tweeted out while you were at this event, at this town hall. And then you went home to kind of sleep off your late night the night before. Because you did have fun the night before. Which we learned its pretty funny in this article that we read about you. But what was the reaction from your friends . Because you had such a civil engagement from him. But what did they want . Yeah. Actually, it was funny. After this happened, i called my mother like ten times. She something was terribly wrong. I just had this hour conversation with steve king. I went home and i ate some Breakfast Pizza and went back to bed. And then when i went out that night, i was just like oh, there is all these posts about it. And they told me just that they were there and they would have kind of maybe engaged more, kind of they would have been more upset. I think it is easier to say things when youre not personally there and not alone. So i just kind of i conducted myself at the town hall the way i try to conduct myself all the time. So it wasnt any different for me. What did they want . What would they have gotten upset about . What did they tell you . They would have gotten i know a lot of people are upset with his remarks lately. Im not supportive of them in any aspect. That is just it. I dont support that stuff at all. But i just kind of want to use my opportunity to ask him about things i cared about. All right. We appreciate you coming on and joining us from cedar falls, iowa. Thank you. We have a fascinating new profile on the president s most loyal soldiers that used to be one of his biggest critics. Plus, dozens of democrats under fire for participating in a book by journalist mark halpern. He was accused biSexual Assault by at least a dozen women. Today we hagot the decision d the commissioner decided to fire the officer. I think rev sharpton has stood by us for the past five years. I dont believe that if we if reverend sharpton was not standing beside us, we wouldnt get this far. I thank everyone that sois on t front line. We won this fight. And for, you know, commissioner oneal, i thank you for doing the right thing. I truly, sincerely thank you for firing the officer. Regardless of however you came to your decision, you finally made a decision that should have been made five years ago. Thats right. And its unfortunate we went from one administration to the next. We cant talk about what happened in the past. We can only talk about what were going to do moving forward. Well be going for the congressional hearings. We will be trying to reopen the case. Well be going after the rest of the officers involved because its not over. Justice for new york city means pantaleo is fired and there is no murdering cop on the police force. So commissioner oneal, while we appreciate you making your decision, we are definitely still calling for eric garner law which will ban the choke hold and ban officers being protected by a shield and not held accountable for their actions. Eric garner was killed five years ago. It took five years for the officer to be fired. I dont want another eric garner. I will do everything in my power to never see another eric garner. I dont even want to see another video of a person being choked out. Because its not supposed to happen. I should not be here standing with my brother fatherless. I should be standing here with my father. But officer pantaleo took that away from me. Yes, hes fired. But the fight is not over. We will continue to fight. Thank you. That is eric garners daughter speaking after they fired the officer involved in her fathers death who performed that prohibited choke hold. Daniel pantaleo. She said the family will pursue action against the other officers who were involved and that work to pursue the ban of that choke hold by officers with a law. Now democrats are facing fierce backlash for participating in a book by mark halpern. He was exiled from the news industry in 2017 after at least a dozen women accused him of Sexual Harassment and assault. He apologized for his actions in a way but he denied the more serious allegations against him including groping and pressing himself against women despite that more than 75 Top Democrats spoke with halpern for his jum upcoming book, how to beat trump americas top political strategist on what will take. I want to bring in oliver darcy. He is following the story for us. He reported on this story when it happened on cnn. Com. This, oliver, is a story thats been lighting up my phone here in the last day or. So women that i know professionally are incredulous that so many prominent officials sat down with mark halpern despite what they see as a lack of real acknowledgement or atonement for what hes been accused of. What do you know from people that were interviewed for his book . Yeah, if you talk to people who have been accusing mark halpern and accused him of Sexual Assault and Sexual Harassment, youll quickly get the sense that they are not pleased with the Top Democrats to speak to mark halpern for this book. I spoke on the phone yesterday with one woman who has accused mark halpern and she said this only serves to retrauma ties the people he affected and enable someone who has been accuse of will Sexual Assault and harassment. They want answers. They want to know why the Top Democrats sat down or spoke on the phone with mark halpern. A political analyst did express regret yesterday. He wrote on twitter after this outrage and overtook social immediate yashgs he wrote by answering halperns questions, i did not in any way mean to excuse his past egregious behavior and in retrospect, i regret responding at all. But hes actually one of the few prominent democrats who is expressing regret. He has a very powerful firm that does work with times up, the organization that formed after the me too movement to fight against Sexual Harassment. She spoke to mark halpern for this book. I was interested in why she would do that given the work she zoz z. F does for times up. No response from her on this issue. A spokesperson did tell me she is interested in beating donald trump and that is why she decided to speak with them. Probably not most satisfying answer to a the lot of the accusers. The wuone person standing next mark halpern is his publisher. She said i do not in any way, shape, form condone any harm done by one human being to another. I have also lived long enough to believe in the power of forgiveness, Second Chances and offering human being a path forward through redemption. She is standing by him in lifgt all this backlash. Shes not taking any additional questions from the media outside that statement. All right. Oliver, thank you so much for that reporting. Any moment new york mayor bill diblasio is going to speak about the eric garner case and this decision to fire the officer accused of putting a prohibited choke hold on him that led to his death in 2014. Why the republican as well this is a story were following, why the republican who may challenge the president in 2020 would still vote for him. Upbeat music no coverup spray here. In the latest edition of the new yorker, Susan Glasser has a revealing new profile about the secretary of state and she is joining us now to talk about her new reporting. This is a fascinating piece, susan. I do want to take a look back at what pompeo said in march of 2016 thvenlt is something that you this is prominently featured in your piece. This is when he actually supported marco rubio for president. You know, trump said that if he tells a soldier to commit a war crime, the soldier will just do it. He said theyll do as i tell them to do. We have spent 7 1 2 years with authoritarian president who ignored our constitution. We dont need four more years of that. Now is the time for this campaign to pivot. Its time to turn down the lights on the circus. And a very different story, susan. The quote that is getting a lot of attention in your piece is from a former American Ambassador who told you hes like a heat seeking missile for trumps ass. So the question is, how did pompeo change his tune so drastically . Well, thats right. Look, first of all, we didnt turn down the lights on the circus after all. I was really struck by listen to mike pompeos voice. It is not something that got a lot of attention in march of 2016. He was an obscure congressman from witch that. Not only did he change his tune about President Trump as soon as trump was elected, he was pursuing trying to get a job in the administration. He was trying to become cia director of secretary of the army. Trump appointed had imtwo days after they met each other for the first time. He seemed to know nothing at all about him when he was reminded that this was the guy who attacked him back in march. He seemed furious and said well, gee, you know, i let Vice President pence pick all the people. Its a reminder of the breath taking flipflopping that we have seen from the Republican Party on the question of donald trump. We got used to it in a way. When you hear words like that, you are reminded. And mike pompeo according to everyone i spoke with is perhaps one of the most of his advisors. That is the straight ji he deployed to stay in the president s good graces and to be promoted to secretary of state. Its not like any secretary of state ive ever seen or covered. I interviewed all the living former secretaries of state. Im writing a book on jim baker. He has neither the background nor many of the attributes that weve seen in republican or democratic secretaries of state. Hes about serving the president in a way that is just very different than others have defind. The job is serving the national interests. You tried to the thesis of your part of the thesis of the piece is, yes, this is a larger this is about something larger than mike pompeo. This is about how the party changed to embrace trump. You also make sense of this change talking about the representation of his business background. Tell us about that. Well, thank you. I was trying to answer fa question for myself. How does somebody change their mind on what appears to be such an issue of principle . And i realize that in this immediate orric rise of mike pompeo, ten years ago he was unknown. He finished three of three candidates to be the chairman of the candidates Republican Party. He reinvented his life several times including covering up what appears to be an embarrassing business failure in kansas when he moved there. This was raised early in his political career. He denied it. But the allegations were true. He also told the Washington Post that the coke brothers were not nearly as instrumental in his rise in his business as in fact they turn out to be. And those were kind of fascinating pivots to me. So its not the first time hes reinvented himself by switching from a trump basher to a trump loyalist. We have 30 seconds here. What do you think the long game is . What do you think mike pompeos aspirations are . Everyone i spoke with felt he was an extraordinarily ambitious politician, that he saw his future in politics. That he was interested in one day running for president of the United States. Hes been talked about for Kansas Senate next year in the open seat. He said no at this time. But he was interested in running for senate. So well see. It depends if he can survive in jumps cabinet. So far hes doing well. Susan, great piece. Thank you so much.
