America. Up first, pomp, pageantry and political insults. President trump beginning his state visit to the uk by getting into a war of words with the mayor of london and trying to walk back calling the duchess of sussex nasty. Ahead of the visit the president spoke with the spoke about the domestic issues of brexit, saying to walk away if british officials dont get the brexit deal that they want. Pamela brown is traveling with the president. Tell us, pam are a, whats unfolded so far. Reporter certainly been a stately welcome, brianna, for President Trump and first lady melania. Its also been filled with a little bit of controversy as you pointed out. Theres been a war of words between President Trump and the mayor here in london, President Trump tweeting about the mayor saying he was foolishly stupid, something to that effect as he was landing here in london, but if the royal family was bothered at all by this, they certainly didnt show it. They were very welcoming to President Trump and the first lady here as they arrived on the helicopter. Prince charles, his wife camila greeted them, and later they were able to meet with the queen, had a lunch at Buckingham Palace and President Trump looked really engaged as they looked at royal artifacts and from there they went to Westminster Abbey and laid a wreath and had tea at Clarence House and then, of course, this evening theres a state banquet where the president will be attending with his children and also prince harry will be there. The person who is not going to be there is, of course, meghan markle, his wife on maternity leave, and as you know as weve been talking about just recently, the president called her nasty in response to a reporter who told him about the critical comments she had made about President Trump in 2016. Now the president had then denied he called her nasty even after theres audio of that, but, again, the royal family isnt showing that they are bothered at all, though it is worth noting that prince harry kept his distance from the president today. We didnt see the two talking at all, so all of this is playing out, brianna, against this backdrop of a country that really is in political turmoil right now. Its grappling with its identity it is a figures out what to do with pulling out of eu. As you know the Prime Minister theresa may will be stepping aside in just a couple of days, and the president himself breaking with protocol and weighing in on all of this in a recent interview. The president said that if the uk doesnt get the deal that it wants with the eu, it should just leave, that there should be Nodeal Brexit which will have a tremendous impact on businesses as well as trade, so theres really a lot going on during this trip. Yes, this is a state visit. Only third u. S. President to be afforded the honor of a state visit by the kweerngs an outstanding invitation for a couple of years, but at the same time there is this tenuous time right now here in the uk and the president will be meeting with the Prime Minister theresa may tomorrow. Brianna . Pamela, thank you so much for that report from london. Next hour the president and the first lady will return from Buckingham Palace for a state banquet. White house reporter kate bennett is outside of Buckingham Palace for all of this, and that is trip, kate, that involves a lot of pomp and circumstance it is a always does, and it appears today so far that the president is actually sticking to protocol. Reporter it does. He seems to have not made the gaffe he made last summer when they went to windsor palace and he walked ahead of the queen while inspecting the troops. Seemed like they okay today. Of course, all eyes are on the first couple. Melania trump actually studies up pretty hard for these sorts of trips, brianna. She meets with her staff and the Protocol Team with the state department making sure weeks in advance everything is done right and handled appropriately and titles are bestowed properly. These are the tricky moments with the first lady and the queen, of course. The queen has been hosting first ladies all the way back to Jackie Kennedy and has been a guest at the white house and many, many played itties from Michelle Obama who put her arm around her to barbara bush who asked hear question, many first ladies have felt that near vows moment of meeting the queen, and i dont think melania is any different. A few moments where we caught her laughing and smiling and holding on to the hat in the wind with camila and the queen seems very relaxed as she often is on the global stage. Shes done a lot of planning. Tomorrow night when they reciprocate the state dinner she was planning it back to washington, the seating arrangements, the china, the whole menu, everything, so shes definitely part of todays activities and keeping an eye on the president , too, i would imagine. The banquet tonight real seems ripe for awkward moments. The president has had an encounter and has been around prince harry, and the president , of course, called his wife the duchess of suction ses nasty, and he says he didnt, and if thats not a sticky wicket, kate, im not sure what it is. I mean, i think certainly it is, and we have to remember, harry met melania back in 2017 in canada, so they kind of knew each other ahead of time and today prince harry walked a lot with ivanka and hang back a bit and maybe that helped with the tension. Tonight its going to be interesting with young royals with Prince William and kate with the younger trumps, the Adult Children of donald trump who are also on this trip, who have decided to come along and join the president and their stepmother Melania Trump for this event and dinner tonight and tomorrow night and well see Tiffany Trump who we dont usually she. Well see done jr. And eric trump and their interactions with the royal family should be interesting as well. Yeah. I think it was not you know, we anticipate that had prince hair and the president wouldnt be so buddy buddy today considering the head lines recent days with meghan markle. Certainly they seemed to keep their distance. Prince hair lagging behind and spending more time with ivanka so well see how that plays out, too. Very interesting visual. Kate ben net landon, thank you. The unit king sdom in a state of disarray as britain is planning on exiting the european union. Ten downing street tried to stop the president from meeting with top brexit supporters. The Prime Ministers office brushed this off saying who the president meets during his visit is a matter for him and keep inminute the support set to meet theresa may tomorrow. We have anne berry with us, and youve been up on this. Why would this be a problem for trump to meet with the men vying for theresa mays job . I think its an unusual situation to have a for leader weighing in at a moment of time when youve got the unit kingdom extremely conflicted about how to have a path forward. I think the controversy is more around the protocol as opposed to the substance of what those meetings entail. Its worth remembering that theresa may is lame duck Prime Minister at this point so the president meeting with her is part of the pomp and circumstance that weve seen on this trip, but its very unclear that anything substantive can come out of this meeting with her or other candidates standing to replace her. Also weighed in ahead of the trip saying that britain should walk away if they dont get what they want from the eu. Why is that something that really sticks out to you . Well, i think its interesting because it supports taking a very hard stance on what is an incredibly complicated issue, and at this point in time youve got experts within with the uk who very explicitly said a Nodeal Brexit is the worst possible outcome for the british economy and the bank of england came out last year and said that could lead to a recession as bad as what we saw after the financial cries so the idea of setting precedent in the United States could come out and support an action to lead to such dire consequences for one before its biggest allies is by many a big mistake. We saw the president trading insults with londons mayor and watching that play out yesterday wasnt as surprising because they have a long history but a lot of political british leaders declined the i invitation to dinner tonight and the president was not invited to speak at parliament. Jeremy corbyn declined to participate and thats extremely unorthodox and when you look at what that means in the grand scheme of things between the relationship between the uk and u. S. , that special relationship transcends any one set of individuals. I think youve seen that the way the royal family has continued to comport itself throughout the early part of the visit with theresa may meeting with the president despite the fact that shes out going and this trip is real befriendship and collaboration between two countries and nations rather than friendships between two individual politicians. Thanks for being with us. President trumps soninlaw and Senior AdviserJared Kushner, he bombed side stepping questions about the Birther Movement as well as russian interference in the allegations. He was trying to defend President Trump about allegations of racism and refused to discuss one of his fatherinlaws most rates of acts. Was birtherism racist . Look, i wasnt really involved in that. I know you werent. It was racist . Like i said, i wasnt involved in that. I know you werent. Was it rates of . Look, i know who the president is, and ive not seen anything in him that is racist, so, again, i was not involved in that. Did you wish that he wouldnt do that . I was not involved in that. That was a long time ago. The other issue that often gets brought up in this conversation is that he campaigned on ban is muslims. Would you describe that as religiously bigoted. Look, i think the president did his campaign the way he did his campaign. He did, do you wish he didnt make that speech . I think hes here today and i think hes doing a lot of great things for the country and thats what im proud of. Chief political analyst Gloria Borger is here with us. I mean, not only what did you think that have answer, but it was the interplay of the question and the answer. Well, the question kept coming do you wish he didnt do it. Because he said hes not safeties. Thats what Jared Kushner is saying. Hes not rates of, okay. And and you werent involved. Okay. We get that, but, what do you think of it . You know, what do you say . Completely evasive. And and i think kushner was trying very hard not to answer the question directly which he refused to answer. I wasnt involved in that. Its not real an answer. When somebody is asking you a direct question, what do you think about birtherism . What do you think about your fatherinlaw saying that barack obama wasnt born in the United States . It was racist . Well, i wasnt involved in that. Thats not the question. And its germane because even if he was not involved in that. Of course. He is there almost as a character witness when it comes to racism for his fatherinlaw. Always. So those questions are completely fair game, the followup less. Theres a character question on a lot of issues whether it comes to the muslim ban or whatever. When youre a Senior Adviser to the president and youre asked a question like that, you dont get a pass because oh, im his soninlaw and i dont want to get him angry at me and i think thats what was going on. He knew if he had answered the question by saying, yeah, i think it was inappropriate, i mean, to use a weasel word, but i think it was inappropriate, which would not be Strong Enough obviously, but even if he had said that, he would have been in trouble at 1600 pennsylvania avenue so he wasnt going to do it, and i think his answer was offensive, incomplete, whatever you want to call it will. All kinds of sglings yeah. There are so many moments and one of them is when Jared Kushner would not say whether he would alert fbi if there was a meeting request from russia, there is a was was the Infamous Trump tower meeting and downmade significance. I shoipd at the meeting, 15 minutes, its a clown show. Let me finish this. I text and said can i get me a call, let me get out of here, this is a waste of time. I never would have thought about that meeting again. Had there been something nefarious at that meeting that came up maybe we would have done Something Different but the meeting was a total waste of. Does it not set off at least some alarm bell when you see an email that the russian government wants to the email that i got on my iphone at the time said show up at 4 00. I never would have thought about if. Had russia in the subject line. I would get about 250 emails a day so i literally showed up at 4 00, i showed up at 4 00. Would you call the fbi if it happened again . We were not given anything that was salacious. Hard to do hypotheticals. What does that tell you . Why is it hard . It seems pretty easy. What does that tell but his concern its not a hypothetical and heres, why because the Intel Community says that russia continues to meddle in american elections. Right. Going to keep doing it in 2020. This is ongoing, and this has happened before with the request from russia. What does that tell but his level concern . Well, remember, he also gave another interview in which he downplayed and dismissed russian interference as a few facebook ads, remember, that and im looking what the bob mueller said last week wand when he said there were multiple systematic efforts to interfere in our allegation and that allegation deserves the attention of every american, he was talking about the russians and when Jared Kushner who doesnt know as much about this as mueller. Im assuming he might have read the Mueller Report would say, you know, i dont know if i would alert the fbi . What . Somebody from russia says that they have got dirt on an opponent and you wouldnt say would i go to the general counsel of the campaign and pick up the phone and let the general counsel deal with it . Is there a Lesson Learned here . Hes concerned about it looking like he did something wrong. Thats right. That the meeting was wrong. Of course, and what hes thinking about in his own head is his own legal culpability here and the fact that he has always said that he didnt know what the meeting was about. You just heard that i didnt scroll down on my email. I showed up. It was ridiculous. There was nothing there, but thats not the point. The point wasnt that the meeting turned out to be nothing. The point was that they took the meeting. Correct. And that is the problem and why not say, look, if we had to do it all over again, i think wed call the general counsel, by the way, don mcgahn. I think we would call the began counsel and say they didnt go too far and hes still worried about his own legal issues. Its not so hard to say that, you know, maybe we made an innocent mistake and we should done it differently, and i wouldnt have attended the meeting, but none of that. None that have. Gloria, thank you so much. Sure. If healthcare will be a deciding issue for the 2020 election a new poll just in essentially confirms that. In Virginia Beach, city offices are back open today with the exception of the municipal center, the scene of fridays shooting where 12 people died. The building is going to remain closed indefinitely while investigators continue their work there, and there was also a vigil that was held just a short time ago to honor these 11 city workers and the local contractor who was in the building getting a permit at the time of the shooting. Among victims being remembered is a grandmother who worked at the city for 24 years, an engineer known for playing in the local bagpipe band and a supervisor who was hoping to retire later this year. Police still have no apparent motive for the shooting, but what we do know is that the gunman was a City Engineer with almost 15 Years Experience who submitted his resignation the dave his rampage. Shimon prokupecz is following this investigation sand in Virginia Beach for us. What are investigators there learning . Reporter yeah. So this is the big question here, and that is something thats on everyones mind and something that investigators say they dont yet know why this happened. They are still working through interviewing wednesday and people who knew the shooter, his Family Members, people who may have had interactions with him leading into friday when all this happened. They are trying to figure out what exactly set him off. They say, according to at least city officials, that right now they have found nothing that indicates that he was having any problems here at work. He didnt have any any disciplinary issues that they know of, so they dont see that necessarily right now as being the motive. It could be several things that were going on in his life that ultimately led to this, but thats still very much unknown, and it could be that they may never know why exactly why he did this, but nonetheless thats their priority. They do want to figure out exactly why this happened. The other thing thats going on here today is that theres still dozens of fbi employees here, crime scene analysts and agents who are working behind us, going through the area where all this happened, and one other thing i want to tell you brianna is Family Members, you talk with some of the Family Members and victims here, some have been showing up to the scene here behind me. One family came over because they were looking for some closure. They wanted to touch the car, the car that their loved one had driven to work the car still behind me. There are other cars here belonging to victims that are still in the parking lot, but Family Members are showing up here trying to do whatever they can to find closure. That one Family Member said they may never get closure because with the shooter dled will never be a day in court for them to be able to face him. And they may not understand why as investigators there are searching for a motive. Shimon, thank you for that report from Virginia Beach. Healthcare is a dominant issue in the 2020 race for the white house, and a new poll just into cnn shows some of the reasons y. According to the new Monmouth University poll, almost half of americans say their healthcare costs have gone up over the past two years. 21 say their costs have increased a lot. 25 say they have gone up somewhat. Patrick mur set director of the Monmouth UniversityPolling Institute so, what trick, what does this is poll show us about the financial burden of healthcare costs . Something that weve been fracking all along because every time we ask a question in our poll whats a top issue that affects your family and keeps you up at nights its always healthcare at the top . 46 say their healthcare costs have continued to go up over the past two years. That number is slightly lower than it was two years ago when we first asked, it and that shows that theres just a march that healthcare is not getting any better, that we have nearly half of the public who is saying, and another question we ask, that it continues to be very difficult for them to pay for their healthcare costs. So theres healthcare costs in general. What does it is say about the difficulty of paying more specifically for healthcare premiums and deductibles. Yeah. Premiums and deductibles the premiums are the one thing. We have 47 say its basically easy. 40 say its hard for them to do that. But part that have is because the economy has gotten bertha little bit over the past couple of years so that number has gone up, but its gone up for other things like for groceries and rent and mortgages as well, too. It suggests theres a huge number of people. 47 say their premiums are bad and 45 say its difficult to pay for their deductibles and outofpocket expenses and things that are really driving them more so than almost any other type of household expense that they have. It was real interesting that the that this found this poll found that he can sear a factor on whether people decide if they start a business or even if they are going to change a job. 49 said this is a major factor and 29 a minor factor and 26 say its not a factor. Whats the Economic Impact of that . You think about that. The whole idea behind a growing economy is theres supposed to be opportunities for people to go out there and look for jobs and half of them are saying one of the things ill look at is the healthcare coverage and we also asked has this ever happened to you before, and 20 of americans say that there has been a time where they did not seek out a job that they might have wanted or did not start business in that entrepreneurial spirit because they needed to stick with the healthcare that they already have through their Current Employer so they kind of felt stuck in their job, one in five americans feel stuck in their jobs because of healthcare coverage. 20, wow past trick murray, thank you for walking us through that poll. Sure, my pleasure. Centrist democrats come under fire at the democratic california convention. Listen to the reaction John Hickenlooper got when he warned against socialism. Socialism is not the answer. [ booing ] i was reelected i was reelected in a purple state in 2014, one of the worst years for democrats in a quarter century. [ continued booing ] and this is president ial hopeful john delaney getting a similar response when he challenged the issue of medicare for all. Medicare for all may sound good, but its actually not good policy nor is it good politics. [ booing ] im telling you im telling you. He cant tell them because he cant be heard, karan demirjian. What does this tell us about whether theres room for centrist democrats in a democratic primary . It tells you that the Democratic Party has definitely moved more to the left than i think hickenlooper realized, both of them realized, and theres a lesson of knowing your audience. Yes, they come from purple states but they are in california right now. Much of the Democratic Party has talked about wanting these Healthcare Systems that look like medicare for all if youre not going to give it that title and beware of what you call socialism i guess because theres more Party Positions than a few years ago that the gop is calling socialist now. You wouldnt expect a democrat to do that as they did. What does this mean for people like know your audience, joe biden. What does it is do for his audience . He did not attend did, not go to the Democratic State convention and senator Bernie Sanders actually took a few swipes at him. Listen. As you all know, there is a debate among president ial candidates who have spoken to you here in this room and those who have chosen for whatever reason not to be in this room. We cannot go back to the old ways. We have got to go forward with a new and Progressive Agenda what do you make of this, especially in the context of Bernie Sanders has not been shy about taking on joe biden, with real punches. Hes not pulling punches. These are real hits. Throwing the punches and taking a victory lap on the fact more democrats who are running for president have adopte platforms that he put up there that made him seem like a renegade in 2016. Biden has had the privilege, i suppose, of being the face and name that everybody knows, seems like the safer option when it comes to challenging President Trump but he hasnt detailed his policy positions in a way that could alienate people and if the progressive conditioned dates force him to enter that debate they feel like they can take shots at him in a way they are clearly able to do so with the other centrists who enter the fray. He could risk not being this consensus candidate that everybody can agree and feel comfortable with and the people not biden, trailing him by that much, numbers two, three, four et cetera in the poll want to start that fight now because they think they might be able to win it and chip away at some of his lead. Its part of the secondary Flight Control and what it does is reshapes the wing allowing it to flow at a lower altitude or lower speed and like during takeoff or landing so that the wing allows the pilot to have more control over the aircraft. Thats really what this slat does on the front of the wing. The New York Times did this expose recently of a of the boeing plant in South Carolina that made the dreamliner. A whistleblower exposed shoddy Manufacturing Processes there. When youre looking at boeing now, this company, companywide, does it have an endemic problem with the way its building airplanes and Quality Control . You know, i think its too early to say that. I did inspections on Aircraft Manufacturing Companies and airlines for 18 years with the faa. Its not uncommon to find certain things, particularly when they are under the microscope right now and theres things that are going to come up and be issues. To determine whether its systemic or endemic that would take a lot more data and a lot more information, but right now there are issues of concern and whether boeing is responding appropriately, thats really what the next step to determine right now is. What do you think as youre watching. You have this issue with the slats, right . I think part of this its not happening in a vacuum, right . Youve got the mcas system which they are now saying that things are sort of they are correcting the issue there and that pilots are prepared, but they are not doing any Flight Simulator time for that. What do you think about boeings response here . What do you think about liability issues for boeing . Well, those are two separate. Is there something going on within boeing and allowing these things to continue to happen . I believe there is. What i believe is going on is that if looking at their responses, i think theyre miscalculating or misclassifying issues. Lets thing this slap track issue. The slap track, theyre saying it cant bring down on aircraft even if it failed completely. In 2007 a 737 was crashed and landed safely and broke into a fire. The slap track broke lose and punctured a hole in the slap track can. It ruptured into a fuel cell. It caused a fire and destroyed the aircraft. Luckily no one was killed on that accident. That tells me when theyre addressing the impact, what could happen, theyre preemptively saying what could happen is this but dont worry about it. The fact is there is a risk. The its not properly treated, it would crack and the stop, the same as on the China Airlines would have come loose and got wedged in the can and caused a fuel leak. Theyre not assessing the impact of what happens. The likelihood is rare, but when youre comparng likelihood with impact of what could happen if it happened, this falls as something thats safety critical. Theyre giving them ten days to inspect it. That is not sufficient to me. What is sufficient . I think all the aircraft need to be inspected immediately before the next flight. David, thank you so much. Behind closed doors mike pompeo is painting a grim picture of the administrations middle east peace plan. I think any fair person would describe as a very detailed one might argue unexecutable because no one no one believes that this will be easy. Can we find enough space where theres enough in there that everybody says thats something to begin to work on . I get why people think this is going to be a deal that only the israelis could love. I understand the perception of that. I hope everyone will just give the space to listen and let it settle in a little bit. A short time ago the secretary of state disputed the account despite the audio recording of him. We have james spider marks here with us. What did you think when youre listening to it sounds like a very candid description he has. Now hes saying thats not the case. Its a very candid behind closed doors. Im sure the secretary was hopeful that by thinking out loud hed be able to kind of be a little more honest with those that were in the room. The big story to me is that can you have private conversations like that anymore . Can you actually close the door and say look, this is where im really struggling with . But what it goes to, that aside, is you set vision which is what this administration is trying to do and all administrations have tried to do specifically with this challenge. Trying to recognize the palestinians and how does that work with israel . How try to establish that vision with a notion of poetry, if you will. Aspirational stretch goals. You the tension between that very broad, very grand ideas about what the best might look like. And then the practical solution is going to end up that might be as secretary pompeo said, pieces of this thing might be unexecutable. Which is common i mean, thats common sense for a lot of people as they look at the plan. Sure. I want to ask about duncan hunter. He said as an officer in iraq his unit, quote, killed probably hundreds of civilians, end quote. Youre a retired general officer. What is your reactions to hearing that . I would say never miss an opportunity to keep your mouth shut. The congressman is trying to draw a comparison between his actions in combat and god bless him for serving the nation honorably both in uniform and now in congress. Theres nothing but good about what hes trying to achieve, but he is comparing his actions in combat that have not been confirmed. These are his recollections, a biassed view. We all have our own filters from combat. You and i were standing next to each other. We would see two Different Things in filthy, nasty world called combat. The congressman has said should i be held accountable for actions i took in combat hes been talking about a sale . Yes. A seal who has been accused and is going through a Legal Process of having conducted war crimes. Of shooting shooting civilians purposefully. Correct. A young woman, an old man. Someone in his custody. The Legal Process needs to play itself out. Now, granted, we could take this to the far end and say the president has great flexibility and discretion in order to pardon someone, but we are not at that point at all. The congressman should have remained quiet. General, thank you so much. That is it. News room with Brooke Baldwin starts right now. Hi, im Brooke Baldwin. Thank you for joining me.
