The senate. That could also involve some other members of the president s legal team. And trump is also considering putting some of his fiercest defenders in the house on that team to present a minority response to whatever the Democratic House members lay out in terms of their argument for the articles of impeachment. As you mentioned, President Trump is growing increasingly agitated about this extended state of limbo surrounding his senate trial. He is eager to get his symbolic day in court. He does not just want to be acquitted by the senate, he wants to be vindicated. And so he has been looking forward to his senate trial. But while trump is growing impatient, Senate Majority leader Mitch Mcconnell is expressing ambivalence saying this week hes not anxious to get this process rolling. And Speaker Nancy Pelosi is showing no signs of budging in her position of withholding the articles of impeachment from the senate. That has obviously frustrated the president as hes about halfway through his trip to maralago here. Hes been firing off missives on an almost daily basis at speaker pelosi, tweeting just recently, so interesting to see nancy pelosi demanding fairness from Senate Majority leader Mitch Mcconnell when she presided over the most unfair hearing in the history of the United States congress. Now, pelosi, of course, is withholding those articles until she feels comfortable that Senate Republicans in her eyes are going to hold what she and democrats would consider a fair trial. Democrats want to have witnesses, they want more document collection. She fired back on twitter writing the facts are clear and every witness told the same story, despite the president s attempts to cover it up. President trump abused his power for his own personal gain. Defendourdemocracy. Of course the president is surrounded by a rotating cast of white house aides. There is more expected to join him in the coming days so maybe there will be more discussion about what the white house strategy will look like on the back half of this trip to maralago. Sarah westwood for us there in south florida. Thank you. Whats getting attention isnt just what the president is tweeting, its who hes retweeting. And some of these arent really even people. Hes retweeted bots and fan accounts of a Conspiracy Group qanon. Brian stelter joins us now. Brian, were not going to show the tweets because we dont want to aid in the spread of that junk. But the president has been on a bit of a tear recently. Yeah, misinformation and disinformation coming from the president of the United States from his twitter feed. This is not brand new, hes been doing it for years but it is still galling and still shocking. Frankly it is unpresident ial to see dozens of these kinds of posts, antidemocrat, antiwhistleblower, all of this content that would offend anybody who believes in the basic principles of our democracy. Let me give an example of what hes been sharing. For the first time late on friday night he posted the alleged name, unsubstantiated name of the Intelligence Community whistleblower. Now, hes posted more than 100 times about the alleged whistleblower but never actually published what he may think is the name of this person. But thats what he did late on friday night, sharing a random twitter users post that contained this name. Now, of course cnn and other news outlets do not know the identity of the whistleblower and are not speculating about the persons identity but clearly the president of the United States wants that to be happening. Apparently overnight he unshared, unretweeted that post along with dozens of other tweets, antidemocrat, protrump messages, comparing democrats to rats, calling nancy pelosi crazy. Let me show you what one of the whistleblowers lawyers said overnight in response to the president s unhinged tweets. He said i guarantee you republicans will wanting whistleblowers during the next Democrat Administration whenever that may be. They likely wont have many given their continual attacks on the integrity of the lawful whistleblower system. He actually called out senator Chuck Grassley specifically saying why isnt grassley speaking out because grassley has been such a defender of the whistleblower system for so many years. But this is the president s many tweets of the conspiratorial posts overnight, calling out the whistleblower, trying to claim he knows the identity when in fact he does not nor do Media Outlets that is the most noteworthy. But citing qanon accounts, citing conspiracy theories. It shows that the president s sources of information are often very unreliable sources. Brian, are you surprised that the president deleted some of those tweets . I mean its curious. Its unusual, isnt it . It is. Its kind liesk of like we know president doesnt drink, but its the kind of thing that if you have too much at night and then have regrets in the morning, thats what it reminds me of when you see someone going online in the morning and deleting what they did the night before. Again, the president is sober but it makes you wonder what was he thinking late friday night, 11 00 p. M. , midnight, sharing these memes and messages. Many of these accounts are semi or totally anonymous with handles like trump girl or pet lovers for trump. Some of these accounts show signs of being run by spam operations, bot operations. Others are actual american individuals who really support the president. But you get into this kind of swamp of social media where these are random accounts suddenly being promoted by the most powerful person in the world and it makes you wonder where hes getting this information and why he seems to need to share these kinds of really hateful messages toward democrats, really positive messages for him. I would argue its a sign of weakness, not a sign of strength on the president s part. All righty. Brian stelter, thank you so much for coming in this morning. Thanks. Good to have you, as always. We spoke with the former Massachusetts Governor a little earlier this morning. Heres what he told us. And i want to put up on the screen what we heard from the michigan board of canvassers. They decided on friday that your name will not be on the ballot. Heres part of what they said. They wrote of your petition that it includes 474 signatures of dubious authenticity where the signature appeared to be written in handwriting that was substantially the same as handwriting from multiple petition entries appearing on the same petition sheet. So lets start here. Did someone from your campaign forge signatures, falsify anything on that petition . And whats the effort to try to figure that out . Well, first of all, of course there are no forged or madeup signatures. Were going to sort out what our options are. It is a peculiar outcome, i must say, because there were two candidates who had not announced at the point when the state party chair submitted names of candidates for the ballot. One was included, mayor bloomberg, and one was not, my own. So theres something that smells funny there, but we submitted more than enough signatures by the deadline and well have to sort out what our options are Going Forward. This is clearly a setback, but its not going to stop us. The people of michigan wanting me on the ballot. The people of the other states where we are competing have been very, very warm in their welcome and were building our team and building our campaign to be competitive. You said something smells odd there. Are you cuttisuggesting that ths something foul going on in michigan . Well, i want to understand that. I think it is strange that the way the process works there, the state party chair writes to the secretary of state, if i understand it correctly, saying who should be on the ballot, who are the Democratic Candidates for the ballot . Two candidates had not announced at that point, myself and mayor bloomberg. They included mayor bloomberg who announced after i did, but not me. So that is something were trying to sort out. There hasnt really been a good enough explanation. We were the only ones as a result who had to go get signatures. We got more than enough signatures, and now we have this decision, preliminary or otherwise, out of the secretary of state. We have to sort that out. Lets turn now to the pending impeachment trial in the senate because it too is looming over the 2020 race. Senators bernie sanders, elizabeth warren, amy klobuchar, cory booker, michael bennet, would serve as jurors in the trial. Joining me now howard franklin, a democratic strategist and republican strategist alice stewart. Howard, let me start with you. The Vice President told the Des Moines Register yesterday that he would not comply if hes subpoenaed to testify during the senate trial. He says he doesnt want to be part of the distraction. Im paraphrasing there. Whats your thought on that . Well, i think its important to note that he has not been called to testify. There have been no witnesses called to testify by Mitch Mcconnell and by the senate for this particular trial. I think he does want to get out in front of the discussion about whether or not he would or wouldnt. I think he makes a valid point of someone whos taught constitutional law and has for a number of years that any actual attempts to call him would rest on showing that he evidence to do with this. I dont think anybody is alleging that joe biden has anything to do with the collusion or the trial that the president is facing. But thats up to the members of the senate, right . After months of hearing from members of the house that subpoenas are not optional, that these people who are subpoenaed must show, now a former senator, former president of the senate, a candidate for the presidency will say im not showing up, doesnt matter if you speep you me or not. I think thats a political message and i think that may be telegraphing to the senate heres what i expect. But i think this is a nonissue until an actual subpoena is issued. If one were issued, i think he would have to reconsider his position. From an american citizen standpoint, we should all get to the bottom and get the answers on both sides. I would like to hear from joe biden and his son, hunter biden, about the arrangement with ukraine. Do you want to hear from mick mulvan mulvaney . Yes, i would like to hear from President Trump, Mick Mulvaney and all of those who have firsthand knowledge of the phone call with President Trump and the ukrainian leader. But from a communications standpoint, absolutely not. I do not blame joe biden for not wanting to agree to a potential subpoena. On the other side from a communications standpoint, the president , mulvaney and others not testifying i think is the proper position to take given there was 11 months out from an election and the Collateral Damage of coming forth on the record under oath could be very damaging. Lets look at it from a communications standpoint, not the political stand point. If his goal is not to become part of the distraction, hes now by saying im not going to comply if subpoenaed when he has not been, he changes the entire narrative by saying joe biden is going to flout a subpoena from the senate. This is when youre out on the campaign trail and youre getting off message based on doing an interview session with the he had to know that was coming. Absolutely. But this is the correct answer. This is where you pivot back to heres where i am on health care, heres where i am onnedcation, heres where i am on the economy. At the end of the day youre at the whim of whoever is doing your interview but the best message is this one and pivot back. His comments were the moment that i agree to this, then i have to deal with the fallout of whatever i say, not the president or other folks in the white house being held to account for whatever their involvement was in this potential trial. So i think hes aware but its a damned if you do and if you dont scenario. I want to play for you part of a conversation with my colleague last night, this is representative dan kilde and what he said about the potential of this standoff between nancy pelosi and Mitch Mcconnell to drag on for weeks. I think we have to wait until we have some assurance that the trial is not going to be some sort of sham or joke. Im talking extremes here, like into february . Well, thats certainly possible, but im not going to get ahead of the speaker. You think thats a good idea, to hold these out until february . Unfortunately there are probably no good ideas left in this particular scenario. I do think its important if were going to call this a real trial that they that the senate lay out the rules that they expect this trial to proceed by. This is the little leverage that the speaker has shes trying to apply to her best ability and shes got to be careful not to get too far out of her skis because this could backfire for democrats. What leverage fair enough. What leverage does she have . She eventually has to pass them onto the senate, although mcconnell has said i dont know what leverage you have by holding something we dont want. The president wants a quick and speedy trial. He knows hes got the numbers in the senate to put this to bed and go back to the campaign trail and say no impeachment, no collusion. Obviously i was exonerated. The longer this is out there, the longer this opens up interest from other americans that may not have taken interest in it whatsoever. The reality is nancy pelosi does not control the rules of the senate any more than Mitch Mcconnell controls the rules of the house. The house conducted their investigation under the rules that they wanted and the same goes for the senate. I think what this really shows is if the house was so confident in the information they had and the rules of impeachment and the Impeachment Vote that they had, they would be running with their pants on fire over to the senate to get this onto the senate floor. The fact that they are so hesitant and theyre actually still trying to encourage members of the senate to interview more witnesses, that goes to me in my mind and the optics shows that theyre not confident in the articles that they are planning to put forward. Let me ask you this, is it necessarily a bad thing for the president to go into the House Chamber on february 4th to deliver the state of the Union Address and nancy pelosi still has the articles of impeachment . Does that give him some cudgel . Does that give him some advantage . Any time the president can go onto the house floor or anywhere and have full control of the house and the senate and the attention of washington, the United States and the world and deliver his message specifically in a reelection year, he absolutely should go down there with the full faith and confidence of the American People to deliver not only the accomplishments he has to date but the vision he has for the future. I think its a great opportunity. But youre a communication expert. Can he spin it . Youve had these now for six weeks now, seven weeks and have not handed them over . Given the fact that Public Opinion has not moved really any degree, victor, since they have started, were still about 5050 with regard to who wants to move forward, that right there is information and all he needs to show, look, your articles of impeachment are not swaying voters. He can use that information to make the case that we need to put this behind us and lets move on to really campaigning and talking about health care and education and the economy, which americans want. Speaking of campaigning and moving on, lets talk about 2020 and this reporting from the Washington Post. They reported that no Democratic Candidates returned questionnaires to the Latino Community foundation. The Buttigieg Campaign declined an invitation from the league of united latin american citizens. Biden and booker declined two invitations from the National Association of latino elected and appointed officials. Little discussion or focus on latino americans in the last debate in california. Are democrats ignoring latino voters . This is a terrible it is, it is, but it feels a bit cherry picked. Weve got two dozen Democratic Candidates. Im sure i could give you a list of what they have done to engage latinx voters across the country. If i were to compare the 2020 race thus far to 2016 where you had 17 republican candidates, im sure theres much more outreach and engagement to that community than we would have seen in 2016 from the other side of the aisle. Secondarily, because there are so many candidates, theres so much noise, i think youre going to see very supportive outreach to that community when we settle on a nominee. Unfortunately, it will be easy to cherry pick in the meantime. That may be a little too late. Let me come to you with the president s challenge. He ran on immigration. Weve got the reporting that twice as many judges this year, Immigration Judges have left. 45 in 2019. There were 24 who left the bench in 2018. And in 20172, 21. A million plus cases backlogged now. His success sfotory and his message to spanish and hispanic numbers are the unemployment numbers. 4. 2 unemployment in the hispanic community. That is a strong number. And look, the president has also made outreach to the hispanic community. He has launched his main effort in florida. Which has a tremendous hispanic community. The key to remember is engaging with these communities, filling out these forms, getting them engaged in this process is instrumental. If you can get them engaged and have communication with them now, they will carry that all the way onto election day. Its important to engage them early and follow through at the end. That is what the president and republicans are doing is engaging now and showing them what we can do. Weve got to wrap it, but the promise of building the wall. Theres not an inch of new wall. They are refurbishing walls and he still has a million case backlog. Well see what the case that the president makes. Alice, howard, thank you both. Thank you. Democrats and former diplomats sound the alarm on russia trying to interfere with u. S. Elections yet again. There is a fresh report detailing a new u. S. Military operation that could combat russian hackers. Sam vinograd will join us to talk about it. U. S. Cyber command says they have a plan to stop russia from messing with the 2020 election. The Washington Post reporting that the military could w weaponize the web. Russian president Vladimir Putin will likely be off limits. They say it would be considered too provocative. Joining us now to discuss, Cnn National Security analyst samantha vinograd. Cyber command, we know thats a military entity. Much of what they do is classified. What can you tell us about this mission and the capabilities of it . This is cyber psy ops. What we have seen under President Trump is really the modernization of Information Warfare and the use of cyberspace to again reach specific target audiences. Its worth noting, of course, that russia has used cyberspace and the internet to target americans through Information Warfare. They have done that through bots and trolls and hacking and they have successfully gotten into our critical infrastructure, whether thats electric grids, hospitals and private residences. Were seeing the United States taking reciprocal action and engaging in warfare via cyberspace to target specific actors within the russian system with the goal of changing the cost benefit calculation for those actors such that they cease and desist what theyre doing with the overarching goal of stopping russias interference in our elections. I want to ask you real quickly before we let you go, so much has been made about or with south korea and the u. S. Military exercises that they have, north korea none too happy with it. Now we know of these exercises between iran, russia and china. Do we know how strong that alliance is, samantha, and how significant is this . Well, its strengthening by the minute. From irans perspective, this is a great example of friends with benefits. Its Solid Alliance with both russia and with china means that these joint exercises serve as a deterrent to any really enhanced u. S. Action with our own allies in the region. But the longer term issue, christi, is twofold. In the first instance it is that china is showing that it wants to be a global naval power. It has invested a lot in the modernization of its own navy. Its doing its exercises outside of the region and also a sign of the growing russia china lines. They are not natural friends. They were enemies for a long time. Now president xi jinping is calling putin his best and bosom buddy and well see them draw closer together to ally against us Going Forward in the military, diplomatic and security realms. Always good to get your perspective. Thank you so much. From streaming wars to the war on truth, 2019 was a battleground for the media. Were in it, but were also counting down some of the biggest media stories of the year. Youre so excited. Cnns chief media correspondent Brian Stelter is here with our list. A misinformation mine field feeding a war on truth. Plus an abrupt departure, shocking investigations and an alleged corporate coverup. Here are the top nine media stories of 2019. Number nine, jeff bezos versus the National Enquirer. In january the tabloid published a bombshell about the amazon founders love life. A month later, the tech billionaire, who also owns the Washington Post went public with a stunning allegation. Breaking new, amazon founder jeff bezos accusing the National Enquirer of blackmail and extortion. Ami, the parent company, denied trying to exextort bezos. Federal prosecutors began looking into the claim. Later the Hedge Fund Owner announced a sale of the tabloid after becoming disgusted with the enquirers tactics. So will the company pay a legal price for tangling with jeff bezos . That is still an open question. Number eight, the fall of local news. While many big papers are gaining digital subscribers, local papers are struggling and some are even going out of print. Across the country newsrooms are being hollowed out, leaving behind ghost papers that are shells of their former selves. Americas biggest newspaper chains, gatehouse and ginnett just merged and are making more cuts. More people are subscribing to digital outlets, but local papers are critically important. Its where some of the best watchdog reporting comes from, which brings us to number seven. A triumph of investigative journalism. The Jeffrey Epstein scandal was forced onto the National News radar thanks to one newspaper, the miami herald. Intrepid reporting from julie k. Brown effectively caused the case to be reopened. I will say we were assisted by excellent investigative journalism. And the reporting didnt just lead to epsteins arrest, it also forced the exit of a trump cabinet member. Alexander acosta resigning after the fallout from the sweetheart deal he gave to Jeffrey Epstein as a prosecutor a decade ago. Its why local journalism is so crucial. It holds the powerful to account. Number six is me too, two years later. Women journalists are keeping the pressure on powerful men. Gayle king kept her composure as r. Kelly ranted. The Bbcs Emily Maitlis was praised for her interview of prince andrew. There was an explosive Rape Allegation against matt lauer, anning aization lauer categorically denied. Farrow pointed to nbc alleging a corporate coverup. Nbc dismissed his book as distorted and inaccurate. Fun five, in hollywood, the streaming wars are on. Apple tv plus launched in november with programming from alist talent. Disney plus followed two weeks later and 10 million subscribers signed up on the first day, crashing the platform early on. Warner media unveiled its plans for hbomax and all of these companies are chasing netflix which doubled no, tripled down on original content. It funded the irishman mostly bypassing a traditional theatrical release. Number four, it is fox versus fox. With news being squeezed out and protrump opinion winning the day. At fox news, the tensions built all year long. Attacking our colleague, whos here to offer legal assessments on our air in our work home is repugnant. Repugnant not clear if that was you or me, but someone is repugnant. Adding to the pressure, President Trump lashed out whenever democrats or dissenters appeared on fox. Theres something going on at fox, ill tell you right now, and im not happy with it. The ultimate flash point came in october when Shepard Smith resigned. Even in our currently polarized nation, its my hope that the facts will win the day, that the truth will always matter. Smith provided a reality check to foxs viewers who pretty much hear protrump talking points all day long. Now reporters at fox are worried that foxs exit has left a giant hole. That feeds right into number three. Impeachments dueling media bunkers. The networks went walltowall for the hearings. On day one two career diplomats testified for six hours. In foxs alternate universe, viewers heard it was a disaster and boring. It was such a disaster. A triple full disaster for the democrats. A complete and utter disaster. All across the protrump media universe, farright websites hyped clips of jim jordan and devin nunes. Experts said that this echo chamber really helped protect trump and exacerbated the countrys divisions. All of this gets amplified on the web which brings us to number two, the misinformation age with deep fakes and bots and trolls making it harder and harder to know what is true. Like a video of nancy pelosi slowed down to make it seem like she was slurring her words. It racked up millions of views on facebook which refused to take it down. Why keep it up . We think its important for people to make their own informed choice about what to believe. And its only getting worse heading into 2020. Facebook is sparking outrage for allowing lie in political ads. Do you a potential problem with Fact Checking on political advertisements . Facebook claims its job is not to determine whether an ad is true or false, although they are said to be considering some changes. Google had a few tweaks limiting how theyre microtargeted to people and twitter has stopped taking political ads entirely. But the big tech backlash is growing. The constant haze of misinformation brings us to number one, the war on truth and the trump administrations daily assault on facts. The deep state and the failed ruling class. The democrats, the media and the deep state are desperate to stop us. The opponents, the opposition, the democrats, the radical left, deep state, whatever you want to call them. More gas lighting. There is no deep state conspiracy. Nope. Trumps message is dont believe your eyes, dont believe your ears, only believe me. It has undermined trust in everything. Remember sharpiegate . As Hurricane Dorian approached, trump said alabama was at risk when it wasnt. Even after weather officials tweeted a correction, the president persisted, holding up an altered map. Agency staffers reportedly felt pressure to support his lies. To say this allowed sounds ludicrous, but as you point out, we have federal employees getting reprimanded for accurately disclosing scientific truth. That is a war on truth. And we see it again now with the assertion that ukraine, not russia, interfered in the 2016 election. Theres only one reason theyre changing this story for you right now and its to confuse you and distract you and make you not care about it because it doesnt make sense anymore because nothing is true. Does anyone know what to believe anymore . And what does it mean for our democracy if we can no longer agree on objective truth . That is the challenge heading into 2020. Brian stelter, cnn, new york. Thank you. So we had some video that you look at and you think how did anybody survive this. We want to show you one of these videos that you really cant believe anybody walked away alive after watching this. All of it stemming from this winter storm that weve been watching across the country, travel nightmare for people. One of the big problems and more dangerous effects of the storm has been to heavy fog that led to an unforgettable scene. This is the side of the highway in etexas and we get the story from amanda ruiz, from affiliate kcbd. I couldnt remember if i was recording at the time or how the camera was framed. I just i saw that trailer coming and knew i had to run away from it. Reporter caleb holder has been a photographer for kcbd news channel 11 for nine years. Part of my job as a news photographer is to go out to breaking news and shoot video of whatever it is. That includes car crashes sometimes. Reporter so he went to a crash on highway 84 and county road 3600. I was looking that direction. Thats where i was focused. Reporter little did he know another crash was about to happen right in front of him, and he was going to capture it all on camera. Thats when you could hear more tires screeching and then just barely see headlights coming through the fog. Reporter a semi truck coming straight at him. Thats when the semi overturns and then slid on its side onto the shoulder and on top of that pickup. Reporter but caleb wasnt the only one there. Take a look at the video again. Watch as this trooper runs for his life and ends up tripping. I remember looking back and seeing the trooper also running. I could see that he had fallen down and the trailer was coming really close to him. Reporter the trooper was hit by the semi. The trooper that was struck is going to be okay. He does have some serious injuries but nothing life threatening. Reporter also in the video, you can see a man jump into his car right before he was pinned underneath the trail for a few hours. He was eventually saved by officials who had to use the jaws the life to free him from the wreckage. Ive never seen anything like that in person. And again, thankfully nobody was killed in that crash. At least 10 Million People are under a dense fog advisory, nine states including other parts of texas. Almost 20 million americans are under Winter Weather alerts from minneapolis to new mexico. Allison chinchar is tracking the storms for us now. Were heading into the new year. Weve got a lot of cities that are going to have moderate or major delays today. The worst spots will be denver and minneapolis. Some other bad spots likely going to be chicago, st. Louis, stretching down towards memphis and even portions of daelllas a houston. For sunday actually as many cities looking at delays, youll start to notice that push off to the east. Now youre talking detroit, cincinnati, washington, d. C. , new york, places like that, all from the same system as it makes its way to the east. Lets break down that system were talking about thats causing so many of these big problems here across the u. S. Again, thats one of the big concerns is what is it actually pushing out. For a lot of the southern regions youre talking mostly rain. The northern and western regions its mostly going to be snow. In between youve got sleet, freezing rain and ice mixed in. Places like fargo, rapid city and duluth mostly going to be snow. The southern edge of that storm is mostly going to be in the form of rain. But look at the amount of winter storm warnings, even ice storm warnings that you have in effect for portions of the midwest. Were also now starting to see winter storm watches pop up across the northeast because that system is heading there tomorrow. On the southern edge, youve already got pretty impressive thunderstorms firing up across oklahoma as well as texas that concern later today once you get the heating of the day that mixes in, the potential for strauchk to even severe thunderstorms are possible. The main threats will be damagidamag damaging winds and isolated tornados. A lot of cities, chicago, cincinnati, theyre going to be looking at pretty intense storms. That system, victor and christi, pushes into the northeast and the midatlantic for tomorrow. All right, allison chinchar, thanks for watching it for us.
