The process on that front, you know, its been slow. As of yesterday, more than 2,000 children are still in the governments care rather than with their parents. Stop this separation of families along the border and eliminate President Trumps zero tolerance policy. This just the latest in a series of protests that we have seen across the country. A week ago we were on the u. S. mexico border and saw just how passionate people are about this subject here, and i think its something were going to see here today in new york, one of the most culturally diverse cities in the world. Certainly expecting a large turnout. Were going to be marching with these folks and bringing you regular updates throughout the day. Thank you so much. Lafayette park is directly across the street from the white house. You can see the north lawn there. You can see the front of the white house. Of course, President Trump not at the white house this weekend. Hes up at his gulf club in bedminster, new jersey. But nevertheless, were expecting to see thousands of people out here who will look to send their message directly to the president , to the trump administration. This all begins here at Lafayette Park at 11 00 a. M. There will be speakers on the stage behind me. Were expecting weve got some protesters here. Well move over this way. Were expecting many different speakers. Were expecting America Ferreira, alicia keys, some of the big superstars that will be reading out the affidavits from some of the people who have been separated from their families and children. We also expect to hear from lynn well manuel miranda, creator of the musical hamilton. Were going to hear from a few kids ages 7 to 10. Well read letters. Theyre in some of those shelters all across the country. So those kids will be out here in what no doubt will be a poignant reading of those letters. A lot going on at Lafayette Park. Again, just across the streetz from the white house. No President Trump there today, but still theyre trying to send their message out loud and clear. After that rally in Lafayette Park, theyll be going up pennsylvania avenue toward the capitol and making their way to the mall to maybe get that message to congress as well. Victor and christy . Reporter the Mcallen Processing Center is the biggest along the southern border including bringing the families in and processing them out. So many galvanized around the country. Mothers and fathers and sons and daughters essentially in cages. Those are taken right here. Thats the last place those families are together before theyre separated. Weve seen protests weekly if not daily. Were not expecting today to see the kind of numbers that youre going to get in d. C. Or new york in part because of population. At this point, the people who live in the mcallen airy and some of the border communities are allowing the larger groups to express their voices right now because this is something they do day in and day out. Were not expecting to see a march. According to organizers, this is going to be a rally more in front of the border patrol. Instead we should see them doing what theyve been doing for the past few weeks, the past few months, and some say the past few years, victor, christi. All right, dianne, thank you. It shows you how many cities and even small towns are taking part in this. I want to show you whats happening in miami as well as a lot of the people came out. You can see a man Walking Around with a bullhorn. We cant hear what hes saying, but a lot of signs and a lot of people who want to make sure that the government hears what they have to say today. You just returned from the border and from what ive read, youve seen some things not heard from the conditions with the people being held. Thats right, victor. First of all, im thrilled that americans from all kind ofrs backgrounds, all kinds of cultures are raising their voices today because what we have been seeing from the zero tolerance policy is incredibly inhumane, it is indeserjts and it is unamerican. And today were going to hear from so Many Americans across the country about how this is not going to be tolerated. So that is terrific. On my visit to the border, victor, it was heartwrenching, to see what these families have been through. Most of the ones that i saw and talked to were the lucky ones because they had been reunited with their families, with their children, after days and sometimes weeks of having been separated. But what these families have been through is something that i hope no one ever either has to see or experience themselves. I talked to toddlers who had not 4yearolds who had not been fed in days. A nursing mother who had not eaten in a week. These were families who had envelopes, carrying envelopes saying, please help me, i do not speed english. What bus do i get on . Thanks for your help. The respite was run by a nonprofit who was receiving these families after they had been through their ordeal. You know, there was a mother whose child, whose baby had been given to her after days of not having changed their diaper. It was it was i juftz dont have words to describe it, victor. This is not how we should be treating families and children. Were seeing video here. These are live pictures. That was atlanta, one of the protests across the country. Well show you as we get those live signals up, the rallies and marches and protests from large and small cities. Scott, let me come to you. Weve learned more. First reported by nbc news, but were learning more about the Pilot Program that was run in el paso between july and october of last year. The zero tolerance Pilot Program where we know that there were families that were separated. I want you to listen to what attorney general Jeff Sessions said in the recent weeks of this broader zero tolerance about those separations. The American People dont like the idea that were separating families. We never really intended to do that. What we intended to do was to make sure that adults who bring children into the country are charged with the crime theyve committed. But a Pilot Program launched almost a year ago, scott, how is it credible for the attorney general to now say, gee, we didnt know the families were going to be separated. We didnt intend for that to happen, when thats what happened in el paso. Yeah. The administration has had a lot of different stories, frankly, on this whole issue. And agree with maria that the families need to be kept together. I think most republicans agreed with that and i think thats why donald trump signed the executive order and why Congress Needs to go ahead and pass the law and put in the u. S. Koeds not to separate families. I think what the Administration Needs to do moving forward is get these Families Together as soon as they can and do what the American People expect them to do, which is to send them back to their country of origin. I think theres a big debate about getting these Families Together and what do we do with them. Thats the next frontier. Do we leave them here or send them home. Most people want them sent home. But they need to do this as quickly as possible. I think maria is right. Americans look at these situations, their families, they look at their own kids and say if this were happening to me, i certainly wouldnt want to be separated from family. That goes for people in both parties. Scott, what were learning from court filings, the administration did not have freechb the pie lot program, they didnt veechb a plan. How do you implement something many would say is as dramatic as separating children from their parents without a plan to get them back together . Yeah, i dont know, and im not going to answer for it. Im sure they regret doing this. Im sure its been a painful for the administration. Although i think their instincts on immigration and Border Control is correct. In 2015, americans wanted Border Security, they think the immigration system is broken. They think people are allowed to come into this country and stay here and not have to face the same laws that people who come in legally do. All of these issues are true. Trump made some political use of it in 2016, and those things still exist. So i think his instincts on getting a secure border and reforming immigration are correct, but i think this particular decision made inside the administration is not ultimately helpful in getting the reform most people want to see. We have allowed this president to move forward with outright lies with whats going on on the border, which has allowed him to dehumanize and to demonize these mieg grand families who are only coming here seeking not just a better life, victor, but a chance at a life for their children when back home they are facing certain death by ironically the same gangs that the president says are marauding American Communities here in the United States, which is another lie. So i think what democrats need to do is to focus on facts. The border has been safer today than it has been in decades. Yes, we are focused on Border Security. Democrats want Border Securitying and the way to fix our immigration system is by passing immigration reform, which we were on the verge of doing in 2013, but republicans refused to do it in the house of representatives, and that is what 2020 should be about. Obviously maryland is not a border state but governors across the country are having to make decisions whether to send National Guard members to the border as the president requested or accept i. C. E. With detainees . What have you seen across the country and what weve learned from nbc news of this program and that they T Administration had no plan to reunite these families after being separated. That last line is a killer. I mean as a parent of small children, knowing how deeply small children miss their parents, how a week can feel like a monday and a month a year, and yet that seems to be the case. We have to get back to the core values of our country. As governor, aisle make sure we remain a refuge and that we protect all of our families. Ive sat with families in rural parts of the state. These immigrants say their kids wake up in a cold sweat each night to see if im still here. That shouldnt be possible in our country. You know, the reality is that we do need some surface working it. I do think we need to not encourage them. We dont need something calling for tolerance. And, again, you know, as a country, we have been a beacon for immigrants. We need to remain that city on the hill and, quite frankly, we have fallen far and we need to get back up that hill. I dont believe in abolishes ice or prisons. I dont know where that gets us. Im the second generation, baptized in my church, fourth to attend, and folks will get to know the whole me. Well, i think its a moment of mass confusion for them. They dont understand whats happening. All the people around them are strangers, ant theyre similarly focused on one thing, which is to get back with their parents and the people they love. The marches are trying to ask the government to stop this, stop this policy of cruelness to families. Keeping Families Together doesnt mean keeping them in cages indefinitely. It means insisting on due process, itz means people who come here are treated with dignity and treated through a due process that allows them to assert their rights.
