Rudy giuliani saying President Trump personally attempted to block an 85 billion merger, a claim the president previously denied. Now giuliani walking back some of those claims. The administration also refusing to comment or apologize of a staffer joked about senator john mccains death while the veteran and pow fights brain cancer. Plus, scott pruitt dined with a vatican official accused of sexual abuse, despite his claims that the trip was focused on a summit with world leaders. Also secretary of Homeland Security threatening to quit after an explosive argument with President Trump over immigration. And chief of staff john kelly tried to correct his comments but is a distracted commander in chief better than a an embarrassed one . Abby, what are you learning . Reporter thank you, christi and victor. Rudy giuliani has repeatedly, it seems, put the president in a tough spot by making statements that he then has to walk back. He told the Huffington Post yesterday that the president denied the at t time warner merger, a contradiction from what the white houses position has been all along on this situation. And this morning we asked the white house about that contradiction. Sarah Huckabee Sanders told me pretty clearly the department of justice made that decision and that their original statement that President Trump had no involvement still stands. And so now Rudy Giuliani is speaking to dana bash this morning, has fully walked back his original statement. He said to dana he told me directly he didnt interfere. He said he has now spoken to President Trump about this situation and, despite what he said to the Huffington Post last night, that in an effort to make the point that the president wasnt influenced by his personal lawyers lobbying on behalf of at t, giuliani now says the president did not interfere in that merger. Its unclear why he decided to go out there and say that but clearly he is walking it back now. The white house wants to clean this up as quickly as possible, victor and christi. Thats what he told the Huffington Post. He told me directly he did not interfere. Brian, your take. Let me take ten or 15 steps backwards. This deal was announced 18 months ago. At at t, giant Wireless Company needs to get bigger and needs to buy this channel and other channel owned by time warner. The president on the campaign trail comes out right away says hes against the deal. All year long, they thought the deal would get approved. Most deals like this in the past have been approved by the federal government. When the doj, Justice Department, sued to block the deal, lots of questions about political interference. Did trump somehow engineer this to block the deal, did he whisper to the Justice Department to stop the deal . What happened here . All along the white house and the doj denied that trump was involved. They denied that his disdain for cnn was a factor in the decision. This, of course, is important, because the Justice Department is traditionally independent, free of political inference like that. This even came up in the pretrial briefs, this case actually went to trial a few months ago. At t was going to try to argue that maybe trump was involved, that he was interfering. The judge wouldnt accept that wouldnt allow that part of the argument to go forward. So here we are now. Its may. A month from now a judge in d. C. Will decide if at t can buy this channel and the rest of time warner. All of a sudden, Rudy Giuliani is out here, contradicting everything weve been told about how this was a normal process, a decision by career officials, this was a traditional process. It is really remarkable, once again, giuliani is contradicting trumps own white house. Andrew, he has contradicted many things, Stormy Daniels information, iran, detainees and now this at t time warner thing. What is the scope of his job . The president has to be green lighting when he does these interviews. Right. Youve written about Rudy Giuliani. What do you make of this . I cant remember trump ever having to clean up so many messes for an aide. This morning, he tweeted about it. This cant go on much longer. Its obvious that trump has affection for Rudy Giuliani but this is a pattern now, almost a cycle where junialy goes out there, says something he shouldnt, the white house has to walk it back and trump looks embarrassed. As much as trump values giulianis advice and values his worth as kind of an attack dog on television, which im sure trump does, this is untenable for a president. Let me ask you this. Daniels earlier today said watching Rudy Giuliani right now, its almost as if hes trying to act as secretary of state. We know at one point he wanted that job. Do you have those same feelings . Well, if he is, its not a very good audition. Giuliani i mean, when this all began, giuliani said well, im just going to be here for a short time. Im just going to try to, you know, resolve the mueller situation. But it was clear to me right away that that was never going to happen. Once giuliani is in, hes in. Hes now out there, making comments about far more than just mueller. Hey, brian, you know, we have heard so much about Rudy Giuliani and why hes coming out here and saying all of this. I want to ask you the same thing. The president green lights these interviews. How is it going off the rails at this point . And how long is there any indication how long the president will essentially put up with this . Rudy has lasted two or three mooch cycles, that period that Anthony Scara muchmucci was communications director. Comeys firing, muellers appointment. The president doesnt give interviews to nonfox outlets. He is in the form of a bunker and views rudy as a colleague right in that bunker with him, helping him through these various crises and controversies. Im not sure that trump dislikes it. At t, rudy either accidentally told the truth, which is possible, or stepped in it big time and contradicted the white house and the doj. Either way its bad, its ugly. Rudy giuliani was trying to say Michael Cohen was not influential to the administration. Rudy giuliani was saying if you were trying to pay to get your deal approved it didnt work because the president denied the merger. Thats what he was trying to say. By saying that, he contradicted everything weve been told. Theres even a sworn affidavit from the doj, antitrust chief swearing that trump had nothing to do with this deal being blocked. This may end up in court again. Time and time again weve seen the president s words used against him in court and maybe well see giulianis words used against him in court. Good point. Let me start with you, brian. How is Rudy Giuliani helping . I think rudy has missed being on television. He said in the New York Times it had been a year and a half and frankly i really missed it. I think he is playing the role that should be played by sarah Huckabee Sanders, who does a great job being nimble and not going too far, knowing that the president will come in with his own opinion that may be contradictory. Shes figured out the scheme. Communications director who they dont have right now maybe. Do they need one . No one has lasted very long in that job. What that suggests is that its not something that fits within the current structure of the current white house. They always say that President Trump is his own best spokesman. To avoid mixed messages, just let the president speak for himself as much as possible. Youve seen sarah Huckabee Sanders take that she has changed her strategy from when sean spicer was press secretary. You didnt see her yesterday, for example, when they asked about the mccain comments, she wouldnt condemn them or comment. Or acknowledge them. Well talk about that later on in the show. What do you think . I think its canhaotic. Ive never seen a lawyer lets not forget he is a lawyer hired to handle legal matters for this president. But to brians point, i think he wants to continue to deceive the american public. He goes out and says these things and then President Trump comes back and says i didnt really say it that way or rudy basically dont have all his facts. Now hes getting into legal matters and totally misrepresenting this president. I think its sort of an organized way to deceive the american public, to say hey, smoke is on this side when theres really more going on. You think hes doing the job he was sent in to do, to muddy the waters . Kind of what brian has alluded to, hired to come on nonfox outlets and basically have us talking about this on and on and on when there are more important issues going on. When he says these outlandish things it puts the press secretary in a tough position. She then has to figure out which side am i going to be on. I think the president needs a communications director. I think this government and white house needs a working relationship with the media to make sure that the truth is being given to the American People about a lot of issues. Sarah sanders says theres no coordination between what giuliani says in his interviews and the white house. Let me come to this element. When he was added to the team back in late april, giuliani told dana bash that his role, and he used this work, ironically now, limited, to interfacing with the mueller team. That doesnt really require him to be on television, right . Nochlt and for the most part where he really erred here was going into government policy and administration policy. It has nothing to do with the case and the team that hes on. Hes not a government lawyer in this particular situation. He should not be speaking on behalf of the government. Look, how long is he going to last . Theres no life span thats too long on this legal team. Theres been a lot of cycle already. When the president starts saying he will get it back, those are sheer signs that your time may be nye. He when he starts talking about you, its not good. One thing we know for sure, President Trump does not like rocks that burn too hot around him. He is the sun around which everyone else orbits. You try to be your own son he gets to you really quickly. Guess what were not talking about, which why i think this is an organized chaotic move. Were not talking about Michael Cohen or Stormy Daniels anymore. Were not really talking about this ongoing russia investigation. At a time when the president is supposed to have all of his staff talking about this new economy, this new tax deal as he prepares to go meet with north korea, were talking about a lawyer who is now another lawyer who is basically misleading the American People and saying things that the administration has not authorized him to say. I think rudy will last longer than we think, because i think the president had an hunkered down in his little group of people that will take directives from him and will continue to cause this chaos. Were not talking about the first half of the sentence where he says the efforts were not successful with that at t merger. The back half of the sentence is because the president denied the deal. However, we dont need to do things thats going to cause further turbulence in the area. And by pulling out of the jcp, i think weve done just that. Everybody. All of our allies, everyone that was a partner to the agreement agree that iran had not violated anything in the jcpoa. So that should its sole focus and purpose was to prevent them from having a nuclear weapon. What we should have done then and should do now is confront iran on some of its other aggressions not dealing with the jcpoa. Just pulling out, leaving our allies on their own kaurksing the unrest were starting to see take place now in the middle east, you know, im hopeful that we can get back to the table. Theres no plan b that this administration has put out in regards to what replaces the jcpoa and how do we make sure we have a scenario that doesnt spiral out of control. When you look at not only the jcpoa, you look at climate control. You look at tpp. So all of it is that what the rest of the world is looking at us and saying weve got to look at other alternatives to the united states. The president s policies of America First or america only, whatever that is, is a policy that would isolate us from the rest of the world and we will lose our leadership that we should have as far as leading the world in an ever smaller global economy, et cetera. Can the Administration Still claim that the policies are unchanged in that region with that on the front of the embassy . Yeah. What is coming into question now is whether or not this administration agrees with a twostate solution to ultimately have real peace in the middle east. The objectives should be for both the definitely for the israelis and palestinians, that we have real peace in the middle east and not a scenario where we are continuing in to spiraling into violence, et cetera. Have you this scenario. You have the saudi arabia, syria, russians who are also in syria. Its just a combustion that, you know, if we just looked at almost hopefully im hopeful that there should be some reason, dialogue and conversations that can deescalate. Im waiting to hear this president talk about another plan, plan b to the jcpoa. I havent heard that yet, and what will happen with with our allies. Sanctions on them also . I dont know what the president has sort of left this big void. Do you believe Rudy Giuliani is really misspeaking or is there Something Else going on here . Well, i think that Rudy Giuliani is in private meetings. He hears whats going on. He knows what the facts are. He goes out and articulates them and then is pulled back. Its a diversion to a degree. I also think that giuliani has always liked the limelight for himself also. He did that as the mayor of the city of new york. I think he might have been fired already, but for the fact that the president is losing lawyers left and right and cant get anyone else to come in. I would like to know who is paying him, whether its the government or the president is paying him personally.
