Despite saying it would be released soon. Lets get straight soon to abby phillips. Reporter the president was expected to make that decision yesterday and was expected according to our sources to release it and decided not to despite saying in a letter that he was inclined. He tweeted this morning, the reason, he believes there were aspectses of the memo that needed to be redakted. The democrats sent a very long response memo which they knew because of sources, methods or more they would have to be redakted. Told them to redo and send back in proper form. The president here, also saying that hes listening to his intelligence community, listening to the fbi and the National Security advisers saying that there were aspects of the memo that needed to be redacted. Listen to what adam schiff, the democrat on the house intelligence committee, said about what he thinks is going on with President Trump and this democratic memo. Last week, over the objections of the fbi and the department of justice who said dont release this, its extraordinarily wreckless, its misleading, he said, i dont care its going on. That was the nunes memo. This week, the white house apparently has a newfound admiration for the fbi. Well, two quick points on that, the democratic memo is quite a bit longer than the republican one. Its ten pages long. The republican one was 3 1 2 pages. There may be things that are sensitive nature in that document, its also true that the fbi made a very Public Statement directed at the white house and president believe that the memo was misleading and should not be released. Cnn political reporter rebecca is with us. Rebecca, walk us through this latest development here about David Sorensen, the speechwriter who has now been accused of d Domestic Violence and is now out at the white house. Reporter the white house announced yesterday he was resigning the position, he left the white house or was on the cusp of leaving the white house. They noted in their statement they made this decision before they received any press questions, any press interests in his case, they wanted to make the point, of course, they take these allegations very seriously, they werent waiting to act, trying to rebut some of the criticism they received in light of the way they handled rob porter and the allegations against him. Of course the white house knew about the allegations against rob porter for months and didnt act on them even when they were Getting Press questions. Clearly, with this the latest departure due to these abuse allegations the white house is trying to show they do take these very seriously, a very different story with rob porter who was working at a much senior level in this white house. Katie, i know that your hot line does some pretty incredible work and the things that you hear and deal with and the way you try to help people, it is grueling. And it is heartbreaking, i know. What are your thoughts that we hear that yet another white house official has been let go because of Domestic Violence accusations, we should point out, no convictions here. Help people understand why this is so hard for people to watch. Yeah, i mean, i wish i could say i was surprised to hear, unfortunately, working in the field of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault were all too familiar with the statistics. So, we know its highly prevalent. We hear often times from people who reach out to the national Domestic Violence hot line theyre feeling very much alone. They reached out to family and friends who didnt believe them and theyre turning to confidential resource to be able to check out, am i at fault here . Should i be doing Something Different . So, i want to listen the president , what he said yesterday when he finally addressed, as people were waiting for him to address the rob porter situation. Certainly wish him well. Obviously, its a tough time for him, he did a very good job when he was in the white house. And we hope he has a wonderful career and hopefully, hell have a great career ahead of him. But, it was very sad when we heard about it and certainly hes also very sad now, he also, as you probably know, he said e hes innocent and i think you have to remember that. You have to remember that hes innocent, he says. Taken a lot of criticism for that because he never mentioned the women, rebecca, where do you think this is going . Immediate resignation of sorensen, is it a reaction to it . I would have to conclude, yes. The timing is clearly related. Potentially these allegations against sorensen came to light as a result of the rob porter situation. But you can see the contrast in the way the white house is addressing this issue and talking about this issue versus the way they handled the rob porter situation. The statement you played from the president , really complicates any cleanup that the white house is trying to do at this moment. The white house is trying to send a message they do take these allegations seriously, they have a zero tolerance policy for this kind of behavior. At the same time, the president himself is saying that he feels bad for rob porter, that hes very sad about him leaving. Focusing on his talents instead of the abuse he was alleged to have can committed and not expressing any sympathy for the women who were the subject of the violence and abuse. So it sends mixed messages from the white house. Former Vice President joe biden had a reaction to the president as well. Lets listen. Walked on stage, a statement from the president saying he wishes him luck, he has so much talent. Thats like saying that ax murderer out there is a great painter. Translate this into everyday terms. Is there any other crime and it is a crime. Where there would be an explanation, the reason we shouldnt Pay Attention to the transgression is because theyre good at something . The reason that we dont Pay Attention to transgression is because theyre good at something. Lot of people, katie, have come out and say, we never would have expected this of rob porter. We know that theres a true dr. Jekyll and mr. Hyde personality out there and his exwife, porters exwife talked about the secoecrecy about this. I think the conversation weve been hearing across media and social media the last few days really illustrates the difficulty that bystanders have when theyre hearing stories about Domestic Violence. Dr. Jekyyl and mr. Hyde that you describe, christi, is spot on. Women will often tell us and men as well who are survivors, their partner was this great person on the outside. They go to church, theyre respected in the community, they do great at their job. Behind closed doors theyre someone different. The victim in that situation often internalizes that and blames themselves. If they can be this great person on the outside to the public, what must i be doing to create that situation where theyre becoming someone different in private . I think we all need to understand the complexities of Domestic Violence and the terror and the fear that people are living in, in their homes, at the hands of someone who says they love them and we have a real opportunity to engage in conversation and help someone visualize and realize a different life. Remember, people who say, you should just leave, we know that anybody whos been abused by somebody the most dangerous time for them is when they try to leave. Rebecca and katie rayjones, thank you so much. Thank you. An olive branch from south korea. Whats kim jonguns sisters role in the north korean hierarchy. History is being made at the Winter Olympics not only on the o ice but off the ice. Kim jonguns sister is vi t visiting the games. Were live from pyeongchang. You broke this story about this historic invitation. Tell us more about this potential meeting in pyeongchang. She was clearly sent here on a diplomatic mission, to visit north korea at some point later this year for a historic summit between the two leaders. This is the biggest did diplomatic breakthrough. From the north korean side, the biggest obstacle that could kill the summit is the joint military drills, if they happen and theyre full scale that could put the brakes on everything. So, south korea may try to push the United States to reduce the size of the drills or perhaps postpone them beyond the start date, some time after the para limb pi limb paralympics. There are still many obstacles in place. The United States has called on south korea to disengage completely but clear ly he has photo ops with kim jonguns sister. They attended a hockey game this evening, in which korea lost to switzerland. This is certainly something that the two countries have been theyre going to have to work out a lot of details. Will, give us some indication of how the north and the south are receiving Vice President pence there . Reporter well, Vice President pence had a tricky job because he came here, he met with north korean defectors, he spoke about the north korean regime and some people blamed him for spoiling the spirit of the olympics. A number of protesters on the ground here who are very loud in their support of the United States who are actually holding up american flags and korean flags. They have accused north korea of hijacking these olympics making them all about north korea and not south krorea who have worke hard in putting on these games. President trump is defending his decision to deny the release of a democratic memo on the fbi in connection to the russia probe. He says the democrats knew that he had too much Sensitive Information and would have to be redacted. Keep in mind, republicans were able to get their memo released just last week against the wishes of the fbi. The president also having to deal with more departures from his white house today. Lets start at the Justice Department, the third person in line from the top is jumping shes leaving the Justice Department for a job at walmart. And at the white house, the second staffer in just three days has been accused of Domestic Abuse. That person is now gone. Chief of staff john kelly said he would be willing to follow them thats if the president wants that from him. Theres been no official offer to resign, according to cnn. Talking election cybersecurity this week, the meeting is going to have days after a home land security official said they were able to break into the rolls back in 2016 i cant talk about classified information publicly. We saw targeted of 26 states. 21 were successfully penetrated. Here to discuss what steps officials should be taking to protect elections. Alex holderman and jack bartsky. Gentlemen, good morning to both of you. Good morning. Good morning. Alex, lets start with you, senators will be hearing about the role they should have about protecting elections. The defense, is is that the right department to handle this . Home land security do, what can defense do that Homeland Security doesnt do is the better question . Thats for alex first. Im sorry. This is a problem for everyone. Not just a defense problem or a Homeland Security problem. Its one that really spans the federal departments, the states, everybody has a share in responsibility in protecting the foundations of our democracy. Jack, you wanted to respond. I agree 100 . I dont care whos helping to defend the country. As a matter of fact, right now, theres a war going on. Cold war 2. On were right in the middle of it. Its constantly happening. I think the Defense Department as well as intelligence agencies as well as the public have a role to play here. Jack, you have said in the past that you do believe that russia was involved in this way do you believe that russia has changed any tactics now that the usa has more information about what happened in 2016 . No, the pattern has always been the historically that the russians will probe, theyll look for weak spots and unfortunately, there are plenty of weak spots. This topic is so rich we could spend the next day talking about this, i dont know where to start. The tactics havent changed, no. Alex, does the federal government have a handle on their opponent here, the enemy in this, what jack calls, cold war 2. 0, they have come out with some guidelines here, prevents unauthorized access or manipulation of communication data, audit records, are they approaching this wholistically. Were starting to see the beginnings of serious erts efforts that could prevent foreign hacking of Voting Machines. Talking about cold war 2. 0, it might not be russia next time. Plenty of very sophisticated cyberattack cyberattackers, the problem is our election infrastructure is so reliant on computers that are obsolete. States are using machines are ten years old. We need action on the federal level, on the state level, in order to make these machines are upgraded in order to make sure that we have paper records of every vote. Paper is something that doesnt really seem hightech but, its a record of the vote that as President Trump himself said before the election, cant be changed in a cyberattack. Jack, everybody many people have said, look, we know that this happened in 2016, but we dont know if there was a true impact to the election from this meddling. As we head into the midterms, what are your thoughts in that regard . Correct and i agree with the professor hes 100 right. I checked out his website. His thoughts are right on the money. I used to operate in the same space. We need to secure our devices, our electronic devices. Another side of the coin thats important and possibly more important is behavior, we are not a cybersecured country. From far it. I think the government is going in the right direction, are we really at risk to, you know, to be turned upsidedown by Election Hacking . I dont believe so. But we need to look at the long term to make sure that this will not happen. But, when you say behavior, what specifically do you mean. Behavior, i give you one thing, i dont know if you guys can see this, this is a potential cyberweapon, every child 6 years or older have Something Like this. People dont know how to operate these things. That includes people like at the highest level in politics and government, remember the famous hack john podesta, his pass word was password. Enough said. Alex, what were seeing this weekend with the denial from the white house to release the democrats memo, i wonder what you see when you know the work that has to be done to protect the 2018, 2020 elections and the role that the House Intel Committee could have in that, and the back and forth just these two memos with all thats on their todo list. What we need badly is resources to the states in order to apply cybersecurity best practices, implement Voting Machines that have paper records and implement audits of those paper records. A bill now being considered in the senate that has been cosponsored by three republicans and three democrats thats just in an early stage, i think it has a lot of potential. The fact that we have democrats and republicans coming together to support it really highlights that this is not a political issue, this issue thats going to the core of our security and our democracy. Anything that congress can get its act together to move on and really make a big impact in our National Security, its going to be securing our elections in time for 2018 and 2020. All right, lets see if they do it. Alex and jack, thank you both. Thank you. Thank you, gentlemen. Listen to these words, dont ram him just shoot him. All right, the president now weighing in after the resignation from rob porter and now David Sorensen, the second white house official as it relates to Domestic Abuse allegations. The president here has tweeted, peoples lives are being shattered and destroyed by a mere allegation. Some are true and some are false. Some are old and some are new. There is no recovery for someone falsely accused life and career are gone. Is there no such thing any longer as due process . And the argument could be made that due process was made in regards to rob porter the fbi talked to both of the exwives, one of the exwives Jennifer Willoughby filed a complaint. Credible sources, there were credible information that this had happened. The white house chose to keep rob porter on board. Thats the point. This is the process. This is the process, this is due process and the fact that is, again in this tweet this morning, no mention of the women. No mention of the women. Somebodys life who is ruined, talk a lot of women who are Strong Enough to talk about it like Jennifer Willoughby. The white house has defended rob porter, roy moore in alabama and those allegations of child molestation, allegations against steve bannon of violence. Of course, the largest picture in the center is the president himself who has been accused of sexual advances, unwanted advances to more than a dozen women. Again, this is the response from the president weighing in now. Is there no such thing any longer as due process . No mention of the women now these allegations of domestic abusz. Coming right after speech writer David Sorensen left in the last 12 hours because of similar allegations. We want to talk about something something in toronto.
