Groups just like this. Twitter has even removed a tweet from the president s covid19 adviser scott atlas, which undermined masks. Twitters decision welcomed by key members of the white houses own task force. That is the contradiction we have between what we know and bizarre claims out there. Lets start with the state of cases here in the u. S. Elizabeth cohen joins us now. We watched that map and i suppose this is what experts have been warning about for months as that we come into the fall, as people get exhausted with coronavirus restrictions, we might see a rise like this. Jim, i think were seeing two things. One as you mentioned exhaustion with the restrictions. Its hard to keep this up month after month. Also the weather is getting colder. Before you could go outside and have a pick thick with your friends socially distanced. Its hard to have that picnic or that barbecue. Its just getting too cold. People head inside and that means the virus can spread more easily. Lets look at a map that we have that shows that the cases are rising, heading back in the direction to the peak that we had last summer, that is the wrong direction. That is not the direction we want to be heading in and while all of this is happening, the president of the United States is making fun of people who wear masks. Last night dr. Jonathan lapook on cbs asked dr. Anthony fauci about this. He asked him, what do you think about what the president has had to say about masks . He hasnt worn masks consistently. Hes pushed back against what you said. I think thats less antiscience and more a statement. What kind of a statement . A statement of strength, like were strong. We dont need a mask. That kind of thing. Sometimes equates wearing a mask with weakness. Does that make sense to you . No, it doesnt of course not. Of course wearing a mask being associated with weakness is ridiculous. Masks are what protect people, good, strong people want to protect other people. They want to wear masks. So that whole association with weakness i think dr. Fauci is right, and it is quite ridiculous. Also dr. Scott atlas, an adviser to the president , twit her to remove a tweet that he made saying people shouldnt wear masks. Jim, poppy . Thats a big deal because hes a member of the task force and someone the president repeatedly cites in interviews, even though this is not his area of expertise. Before you go, you have new reporting on john sson johnso and their vaccine trial paused. The trial was paused a week ago. We asked Johnson Johnson two very basic questions. We asked them is this the first pause for your trial and we asked them the participant who became ill that illness is what prompted the pause. The participant who became ill, did they get the placebo for the vaccine and Johnson Johnson would not answer the questions. Thats a problem when questions dont get answered, that makes americans suspicious about vaccines, and we want americans to roll up their sleeves and get the vaccine. The more success spish thspicio the more theyll hesitate to get the vaccine. Thank you, elizabeth, important reporting. As this virus continues to spread, the president is Still Holding these rallies. Two more rallies in arizona today, in fact. Exactly the kind of events crowds, not a lot of social distancing or masking that Health Experts say are dangerous. Cnn White House Correspondent john harwood join us now. President trump, listen, hes doubling, tripling, quintupling down, i dont know where we are right now on this attack on the facts and the science, and now mocking joe biden by saying he will listen to the scientists. What is the strategy here for the president . Jim, at this point, the dangerous rallies that the president is having the same function as the dangerous advice hes getting from dr. Scott atlas, that is to say at a time when most americans are rejecting President Trumps performance as president , theyre rejecting his handling of the coronavirus, they provide a pocket of minority view that comforts the president , makes him feel good about having given up on the fight against the coronavirus. Hes gone so far away from reason and rationality thats mocking joe biden for listening to the genuine experts on this pandemic. Hes going to lock down. Hes going to want to us lock down. Hell listen to the scientists. If i listened totally to the scientists, we would right now have a country that would be in a massive depression. Reporter now of course thats false on a couple of levels. Joe biden has said he would only move to lock down if the scientists recommend it. Secondly, it is understood by all in Public Health that if you can get control of the pandemic, thats how you have a sustainable recovery. Look at whats happening in china, which is going to have a growing economy this year. Thats very hard for the United States to get a handle on the virus, as long as trumps dividing the country. Joe biden says hes going to bring the country together. Umhum. Right, and the question is how do you do that . If he wins, how do you bring republicans who didnt support him into the fold for a unified strategy here . Before you go, what is his message on the trail today . Joe bidens message on the trail is were going to end this divide that is caused as elizabeth just saying a chunk of the country to think that mask wearing is a sign of weakness, and get, try to get everyone on the same page. Not going to be easy, but thats joe bidens call. Thanks, john, reporting for us from the white house this morning. Lets bring in dr. Chris benal, at new york City Hospital and volunteer in modernas phase three vaccine trial and dean of tropical medical medicine at Baylor College of medicine, dr. Parnell, not only are you in the final stages of this vaccine trial, your family members have had this. I mean, its heartbreaking what your father went through, and dr. Atlas, who is on the president s task force tweeting over the weekend that masks dont work. I mean, its so untrue that twitter had to take it down. Poppy, that antiscience behavior is detrimental to this nation, and i stand by the statement that the Public Health is really a threat. The white house, this president , this administration threatened Public Health. I was speaking with a High School Classmate the other day who lost her husband, who was a Police Officer in glen ridge, new jersey, to covid19. So when we continually pose winners versus losers, were only further deepening the skepticism and further deepening the suspicion and we need to stop that. Dr. Hotez, lets look ahead here if we can, 15 days after the election, you have a second trump term or you have a president biden. If you sat down with either one of them to recommend what is necessary to get this growing outbreak under control, what would that be . Would it be a national lockdown, more targeted lockdowns in areas where you have severe outbreaks . What exactly would be on your todo list for the new president or second trump term . Well, jim, the first thing i would do is explain to either president or president elect where were at nationally. We are seeing now a steep acceleration where yesterday i believe we were over 70,000 new cases a day. It goes up and down on a daily basis, but when you look at the sevenday trends, its quite ominous. We will be easily by 70,000 new cases per day by the end of the week, and who knows where it goes from there. If you look at some of the models of the institute for Health Metrics or some of the philadelphia models, in some cases they look almost apocalyptic in terms of numbers of new cases per day and deaths. So we are headed into a very scary place indeed, one of the worst parts of the epidemic as dr. Ostorholm said earlier. The question what should we be doing . One, getting americans ready. There is good news. We will have vaccines by the middle of next year or the Third Quarter of next year. Im pretty confident of that. Were developing a vaccine as well so were not asking for americans to do this forever, but at least get ready for the next few months, and if things go as bad as some of the models suggest, yes, its possible in some parts of the country, we will have to do aggressive social distancing measures. I would not take that off the table, and remind the president when he says, when he mocks joe biden for listening to the scientists, if the president had listened to the scientists this year, we could have averted most of those 200,000 american deaths, deaths of americans who perished during this epidemic, and averted Public Health catastrophe, which is now declining further into Homeland Security threat, because people are so scared and upset. So this is going to be a tough winter, and ive been talking to a lot of americans about looking for some Mental Health counseling this winter as well, and think about who youre going to social distance, try to avoid living alone if you can. This is going to be a tough time for us. Yes. To your point about the president , lets play for our viewers what dr. Fauci said last night on 60 minutes when he was asked are you surprised the president contracted covid. Were you surprised that President Trump got sick . Absolutely not. I was worried that he was going to get sick when i saw him in a completely precarious situation of crowded no separation between people and almost nobody wearing a mask. When i saw that on tv, i said, oh my goodness. Nothing good can come out of that. Thats gotta be a problem and then sure enough, it turned out to be a super spreader event. Dr. Pernnell, after governor christie contracted covid he had an awakening, i should be wearing masks, i made a big mistake. We vnts heard thathavent hear president. What are the Public Health consequences of of are of that . Those consequences are devastating. It will take some time for us to restore faith in our public institution, some time to restore faith in our Public Health infrastructure. Thats concerning. Right now coronavirus is tracking to be the third leading cause of death in 2020, and if we had followed the science, if we had leaders who exemplify smart leadership and truth prevailed, we wouldnt be in the predicament were in now. Whatever we can do as a Public Health community to beat back the false notions and the false narratives, its imperative that we do it it will take the American People listening and reading those facts, not get snowed by all the disinformation out there. Dr. Chris pernell and dr. Peter hotez thanks to are both. President trump is amplifying his attacks on the governor of michigan, gretchen whitmer, just days after authorities foiled an alleged plot to kidnap her. Governor whitmer and the president have clashed over her response to the pandemic. Over the weekend, the president compared her to a prison warden, accused her of needlessly locking down the state. That led to crowds breaking out in chants of lock her up. Its similar to the language used by those accused in the kidnapping plot, and here is a response from governor whitmer. It falls on deaf ears every time. They havent done a darned thing, and in fact, ten days after a plot to kidnap, to put me on trial and then to murder me, ten days later, theyre back in michigan using the same rhetoric ive been asking them to turn the heat down. It is dangerous. Now were seeing new evidence in this alleged plot including what Authorities Say is video of Field Training exercises, as well as encrypted messages laying out the scheme. Our sara sidner reports. Reporter you are looking at evidence that was played in federal court of the Field Training exercises federal prosecutors say were carried out in a plot to storm michigans capitol and kidnap governor gretchen whitmer. Over the weekend she announced a 48hour deadline as Senate Republicans prepare to vote again on a plan that democrats have flat out reject ed opinion lauren fox is on capitol hill. The speaker is going to talk in a few hours. I no he shes had a big issue with the language changes from the white house on testing, but what are, is the bigger Sticking Point the top line number here or does she sound like shell agree to 1. 8 trillion . The biggest Sticking Point is what weve been talking about all summer long. There are a myriad of them. Theres not just one anymore and i think one thing to remember is this testing language is a perfect example of just how tough it is to come to some kind of an agreement over the next 24 to 36 hours. Remember, pelosi essentially thought they had some kind of deal in terms of the testing large wan language. She argued the changes made to the language were much more substantial and have an adverse effect especially on minority communities and thats just one of the Sticking Points. Other Sticking Points include top line number like you said. The other ones include things like unemployment insurance, something weve been talking about all summer long. Child care credits, another issue that weve been talking about, state and local government funding. So these remain some key Sticking Points and thats before we get to republicans red line, liability insurance, something the democrats have been fighting in these negotiations. So while there is a deadline, because thats whats going to be needed if theyre going to get a deal before the election, poppy, its hard to imagine how you get even pelosi and the white house on the same page, before you introduce this to Senate Republicans who have been very clear, there is no interest in going above 1. 8 trillion in a deal like this. So thats where things remain, and yes, there is a deadline. There is a time line at this point, but whether or not they can come to some kind of an agreement, even now that they have that time clock, still remains to be seen, poppy. Okay, lets hope they can for everyone out there. Lauren, thanks for the reporting. To wisconsin, where cases of covid are surging. It was one of ten states that reported their highest single day case count on friday. Yet the president Still Holding a Campaign Rally there, just the kinds of events crowded, no social distancing, very few masks, that doctors say are dangerous, help spread the virus. Dr. Paul casey medical director at belland Health Department in green bay, wisconsin. Good to have you on the program again, doctor. More than half, this figure caught my attention, more than half of all positive coronavirus tests infections in wisconsin have been reported since september 1st, just in the last two months, less than two months. You heard the president , i just want to quote him for our viewers, heres what he said about the outbreak, have a listen. Were rounding the corner. Youll see it. Were rounding the corner, but you got to open up. You got to open up. You got to get the place going. Are you rounding the corner in wisconsin and do you agree the answer to what youre seeing now is simply to open up . Absolutely not. We are not rounding the corner. Over the last 30 days weve seen an alarming rise in the number of coronavirus cases. On friday as you mentioned we had the highest single day count of 3,800 new coronavirus cases in our state. We know that 6 of those patients will ultimately need to be admitted, so thats just from one day, so in two weeks when people typically need to be admitted were going to have 228 patients across the state who are going to need to be admitted. We are not seeing, were not rounding the coroner this area. This will seem like a dumb question to you maybe but if im wondering, i think others might be wondering. You look at wisconsin battling the worst outbreak in america as of friday, there was a reporting glitch over the weekend where we dont have the weekend numbers, why in wisconsin . Why now . There are several reasons. One, unfortunately theres an alarming lack of understanding about this disease, and unfortunately a lot of people still think its a hoax, so 50 of the population refuses to wear a mask, and we know the current wave is being spread in small family gatherings, lunches with friends, that type of thing, so the biggest thing were battling is people just understanding that this is a deadly disease, and you can catch it very easily. Its highly contagious. Thats the biggest thing were battling right now. And as i understand it, reading this weekend, republican lawmakers in the state that are still backing a lawsuit fighting the mask mandate, jim. I just thought given what we heard that was shocking. Its amazing months in, you still have to battle for people to accept the facts of this. Yes. Dr. Casey, ive been asking folks, because we try to look ahead here, right, because the sad fact of the Current Situation were in, its not the president is not going to change his rhetoric it seems and the numbers are rising. What would you recommend on november 4th to either a newly reelected President Trump or a new president elect in joe biden thats necessary for wisconsin to get a handle on this . Jim, its not only in wisconsin. We need a unified National Response to the worst Global Pandemic weve seen since 19171918. Part of the problem has been we have not had a uniform response. The states have been disorganized. The federal government has been disorganized, leaving it to local Public Health departments to battle for their communities. It would be wonderful to have a unified National Response to the worst Health Crisis weve seen in over 100 years. Yes. What about the Field Hospital . We were reporting last week that you guys were setting up a Field Hospital on the state fairgrounds, and youve talked about beds being placed in the hallways of other hospitals to handle the load. So the Field Hospital is set up to take care of Covid Patients when hospitals become overwhelmed. We have not yet reached that point in our hospital. We look at our daily census, and identify patients who might be candidates to go to that hospital. A couple problems with the Field Hospital. The first is its 120 miles away. We are facing difficulties with transportation by ambulances. We had a patient yesterday who needed transportation to crater Medical Center in milwaukee for a different reason and struggling to find an ambulance to take that patient. They were estimating it would take five hours until they could pick the patient up and take that patient to milwaukee. So thats going to be a challenge as well. The other problem with the Field Hospital is really they cant take the sickest patients. Patients have to be ambulatory, they have to be able to check their own blood glucose. They cant do all the fancy treatments we do in the hospital, so although the bed dp capacity is helpful, its somewhat limited in the services they can provide there. We will use that if we need to as a last resort, but theres some difficulties with the Field Hospital. We got another holiday coming up, and the data is very clear that holiday weekends over the summer memorial day, july 4th, labor day, people traveled more, and infection rates went up, thanksgiving. What do folks need to know going into this holiday, what would you recommend they do and dont do . So family gatherings as ive mentioned are currently the biggest thing were seeing as vectors of infection for covid19. So i mean, thanksgiving is an american tradition. We all look forward to it. This year is different, and people just need to understand, if you get together with 20 people who dont live in your household, theres a very good chance of one of those people who does not have covid symptoms may be infectious and several people in that gathering could get infected, and the stats are rather staggering. Currently were seeing a lot of elderly people admitted. We know that one in three patients above the age of 70 who contract covid will need to be admitted, and then one in three of those patients who do get admitted will die over the age of 70. So those are pretty staggering statistics in my mind. So i urge families to think long and hard about holding personal gatherings around thanksgiving, because theres medical risk to that. Dr. Casey, we appreciate you giving the unvarnished advice there. Thanks so much for joining us, always. Youre welcome. You differed with him on issues such as Climate Change and the Emergency Declaration on building the wall and transgender military ban. Were 15 days from an important election november 3rd. Will you be supporting President Trump on election day . Im still ruminating about that. This crazy world were in every day brings some new dialogue, commentary and so im going to study everything the next couple of week but youre right, probably no republicans disagreed with the president more than me. The Emergency Declarations were unconstitutional. I was the only republican to reaffirm the twostate solution with israel, been our policy since 1948 and i had an open mind about impeachment. I spoke extensively with the speaker running a more exhaustive process to really get all the information, more like a watergate program which would have probably raised the level of concern over who the president have done. Those are enormous differences theyre describing there. The wall funding declaration emergency was unconstitutional, saying you disagree on a fundamental issue of Foreign Policy and National Security, the twostate solution for israel and the west bank. Were 15 days out. Were four years into the president s administration, isnt that enough, dont you have enough material to make that decision at this point . Probably do but id prefer not to say what its going to be and i want to see what happens. Who would have thought some of the events of the past week would have taken place and the more we go down the road resisting masks and distance and tracing and the things that the scientists are telling us, i think the more concerned i get about our management of the covid situation. Okay, well who do you think would better manage the covid outbreak based on their public statements, the president still denying the science and Vice President biden who says he will follow the science. Who, biden or trump, would better handle the outbreak . I dont think theres any doubt that Vice President biden has the right approach, and theres a lot of republicans that would agree with that as well. Unfortunately there is a few republican governors who do not, like North Carolina north dakota guy that was in the news this morning. Looking at the broader response to this, and i know that no ones been perfect about it, in no country, but do you believe that the president and this administration has let down the American People on its response to the virus . In many respects, yes. My understanding is that he was briefed by the Intelligence Services on as early as the 3rd of january and 11 other times in january and february, and the fact that we didnt act on it while countries like singapore and south korea were acting on it, and australia is a little troublesome, because we had the information. Understood. The president spoke to your constituents over the weekend in ft. Myers, florida, and during it, he attempted to strike a more emphatic tone, knowing that there were a lot of seniors there who have suffered through this outbreak. I wonder, in your view, has he already lost them . He will do well in my area. Its a very strong republican area. I think he has a lot of support. For whatever reason, they turned out 57,000 more votes for trump in 2016 than they had for mitt romney in 2012. So its going to be very interesting to see how much enthusiasm there is this time. Okay. I want to ask about the plot up against governor whitmer, which of course included a plot against another democratic governor in virginia. The video of their training, and i think were going to show a short clip here now, and all the things they were planning here, to kidnap and possibly kill. Ive seen a lot of terrorist videos in my time as a National Security correspondent, iceis video, al qaeda videos. This is as bad as any ive seen here. The governor of michigan says that by calling her a dictator, by calling her a prison warden, by egging on his crowds to say lock her up that the president is in effect inciting these groups, and i wonder if you agree . Yes, i do. Yes, i do. I think that a more president ial, compassionate tone, as weve seen out of president bush, clinton, bush, reagan, et cetera, would calm the fires a little bit, and prevent some of these people on both sides of the political spectra from committing or threatening violence. Thats a remarkable statement to say that the sitting president you believe is inciting this kind of violence and i just wonder how you could then cast your vote for him in 15 days time. Well, like i say, ive got a very open mind about that, and im continuing to study it, and i have some disagreements with the way the administration has conduc conducted things in the last three and a half, four years. Youve heard some of your republican colleagues, among them ben sasse in a conversation with constituents say they fear a republican blood bath on election day, and i know these things are hard to predict. Youre a politician. Youve talked to a lot of voters. Do you have a similar fear coming up in two weeks time . First of all, i really dont want to be a politician. I like being a business leader. I know, twoto your credit. Much more interesting careers, but the fact is, we got slayed pretty good in the suburbs and among women and things in 2018, and i dont see anything thats going to change that now. The same positions that got us the thrashing we got then still maintain. Understood. Congressman, we always enjoy speaking to you on this broadcast. Youre always welcome.
