Voices. Its a shame and with hydroxy, all i want to do is save lives. I dont care if its hydroxy or anything else. All i want to do is save lives. If we can save lives, thats great. One thing, were doing very well on vaccines and very well on therapeutics. Thats very important, but i happen to be a believer in hydroxy. I used it. I had no problems. I happen to be a believer. Many, many people agree with me. A great test just came out from the clinic and it is very respected and well see how it is. [ inaudible question ] im thinking about it, but were thinking of a location very soon and well let you know. [ inaudible question ] back to germany [ inaudible question ] youre right. Theyre there to protect europe. Theyre there to protect germany, right . And germany is supposed to pay for it. Germany is not paying for it so why should we leave them we dont want to be disrupters anymore. The United States has been taken advantage of for 25 years both on trade and on the military. We are protecting germany. We are reducing the force because theyre not paying their bill. Its very simple. Theyre delinquent. Very simple and there are other nato countries also. Right now youre eight out of 28 countries that are paid up. I got them to pay 130 billion a year more going up to 400. Most of them will be uptodate. It wasnt easy, but most of them will be uptodate. The one that wont be uptodate is germany as we spend a lot of money on germany. They take advantage of us on trade and they take advantage of the military so were reducing the troops. I would think about it. [ inaudible question ] we talked to putin about a lot of different things. Were working on a vaccine. Oxford is doing very well. Pfizer is doing very well. We have a lot of good options. Is there information about a vaccine . I can hear everybody but you. I can hear everybody, but you. Were in formal negotiations with russia. On nuclear arms control. Well talk about that later. China right now is a nuclear power. You understand that. Right now we are the Great Nuclear power and we upgraded our nuclear tremendously. We have the most power. Russia is [ inaudible ] we thought that we would do it first. I dont know if it would work out, but we will do it first and we will go to china together. Did you talk to Robert Obrien . I did. I wished him well. I havent seen him in a while and he came back. He tested positive and hes doing very, very well. I said hes doing very well. I spoke to him yesterday. Mr. President , are you concerned about reports that americans no. Im not childrened. Im a therapeutic person, too, to be honest. I love the idea of therapeutics. You give someone a transfusion or shot and they get better, but were doing very well on vaccines and therapeutics, okay . As far as portland is concerned, weve taken a very strong stance. They are anarchists. Theyre radical, crazy people and theyre either going to straighten it out for themselves, portland, the police and maybe if the state catches up, that means the governor and the mayor, but theyre very weak people. Theyre very weak people. Hes radical and these anarchists are controlling and the governors and the mayor and the mayor went into a rally and it was recorded by cnn by nbc and he went into a rally and he thought hed be their buddy. They excoriated him. Lucky he had five bodyguard, but they excoriated him. Nbc, i didnt see it on cnn because i dont watch cnn, nbc absolutely covered it like he was their big buddy. He was in great danger of dying. He would have been dead if he didnt have his bodyguards. These are bad people. These are anarchists. Theyre agitators, and either they do something or were going to do it. In the meantime, our purpose there is only to protect our Federal Building which were doing with no problem. I mean, theyre nasty and our people are powerful people, very powerful. Theyll clean up portland, too and the federal government is cleaning up or well do it for them. The governor and the mayor who are weak, either they clean up portland or well do it. Okay. Thank you very much. The president speaking there moments ago on his departure from the white house. It is always necessary to fact check the president after moments like this. Just a few and well have to take some time to do it. One, he says that colin powell said the intelligence regarding russian bounties regarding soldiers in afghanistan wasnt true. Thats not what he said. He said he did not think it was as serious as portrayed in the media. We should note that the u. S. Military did act on it by increasing force protection in afghanistan. Other points here, poppy, notable that he doubles down on list support for the doctor who he retweeted regarding disinformation about masks and so on. This, of course, the doctor who had other portions involving alien, et cetera. He is very impressed with her and also i think poppy notable there to see deep disagreements not just on the party on additional stimulus and not just with the other party and democrats on additional stimulus, but within the republican party. Those divisions still seem to stand. Absolutely. Important fact checks and a lot more that we need to do. Lets bring in our team of experts to help us do that. Weve got john harwood, lauren fox, dr. Seema yasmin, Josh Campbell and the political reporter for axios. Can everyone hear me . I can hear you. All right. Just looking for you guys on the screen. Jonathan swan, if i could begin with you because we just heard the president. Youre the one who did the interview with the president and he finally said in eight phone calls with vladimir putin, eight of them since this intel was in his Daily Briefing never once did he bring up the fact that intelligence showing russian bounties paid to the taliban could have cost the lives of at least three American Service members. He said do you unequivocally and hes doubling down and what did you make of his response really questioning the intel itself. Well, he doubled down and to me there are two important things to point out, and theyre distinct and they feed under the same umbrella. The first is that its not just that hes skeptical of this intelligence. There is reasonable it is reasonable to be skeptical of any sort of intelligence and certainly we know that theres not consensus on this which is not unusual and its serious intelience and it was taken seriously inside the pentagon as you pointed out and it was shared with allies, but whats really remarkable is he shows no interest in getting to the bottom of this intelligence. He has dismissed it on its face. He is incurious about it, and instantly jumped to the conclusion that it was quote, unquote, fake news. This is an intelienligence prod. The other thing thats notable. I pressed him on another question, i said fine. You dont believe in this particular piece of intelligence, but what about the fact that you know russia is arming the taliban and your own head of forces and former head of forces in afghanistan general John Nicholson said this on the record while he worked for you and President Trump said i havent heard this, you say theyre arming them. I said yes. Theyre giving them weapons and it hasnt reached my desk. Thats a stunning comment from a commander in chief. A truly stunning comment. Yeah. The other part of that stunning comment, jonathan, was for him to equate the u. S. To russia in his answer saying that we, the u. S. , armed fighters in afghanistan during russias occupation in the 1980s which by the way, is a russian talking point often repeated by the russian president himself. John harwood, the president in terms of fact checking, he repeats a phrase that he and his allies often do, that no one has been tougher on russia than trump. Easily disputed. It happened on the day that he withdraw 12,000 forces, and its something celebrated by russia and as jonathan, as we saw in his interview with jonathan, refusing twice to even warn the russian president away from targeting u. S. Forces in afghanistan. Why does the president continue to repeat that phrase no one has been tougher on russia than trump when it has been so easily disproven . Jim, the president is actively advancing the interest of russia. Lets step back for a minute. Long before he was president. Russia and russians were Donald Trumps financial benefactors. They assisted as Robert Mueller told us, his campaign in 2016. Helped him get elected. He welcomed that assistance. As president he has consistently acted in ways that has divided and weakening nato and the western alliance. The withdrawal of troops from germany is in piece with that. He is indifference to american soldiers and this intelligence about potential bounties on the heads of american soldiers is also of appease with that, and jonathan did a good job of pressing him on that interview, but i think if you step back from this, what weve seen in the president in the last 24 hours and in the Briefing Room in his comments today and in his interview with jonathan, he is affirming the judgment that weve gotten from jim mattis, john bolton and his senior former aides and his niece, President Trump is not psychologically of doing the job of president right now. You saw it. Other misinformation. Him asserting in that talk with reporters just now that germany has not paid its nato fees. There is no such thing as nato fees. He said weve protected germany. The u. S. Troops in europe are there to protect the United States as well as the free countries of europe. The president does not understand his job and it is not clear that he is particularly interested in doing his job in protecting the American People. Either with the pandemic or with respect to national security. Dr. Yasmin to you and very important point, jo knohn harwo thank you for that. It appears to be a doctor that the president is listening to, her name is dr. Emanuel. Dr. Stella emanuel. I bring this up because she is in one of the videos that the president retweeted touting hydro hydroxychloroquine and the president was asked about her and he said shes, quote, very impressive after multiple reporting outlets put out more about her history including the fact that she has proposed that sex dreams involving demons cause illness. Im not making this up and that alien dna is used in medication according to the daily beast. The fact that he didnt listen or bring up what dr. Fauci brought up this week about hydroxychloroquine and hes still impressed by this doctor, and what are the medical implications for the American People . This is extremely dangerous that the height of this first wave in america that we cant seem to get out of where were seeing hundreds of americans die every day. The president continues to push out false information about this virus, about potential treatments for this virus. It is so important that people watching right now understand that this hydroxychloroquine medicine who has been a long time treating malaria, lupus, arthritis, it has been studied against covid19 and we know enough now to know it doesnt work and it can damage the hearts of people with covid19 and it can elevate their liver enzymes. Its not a placebo. This is a medicine with very real side effects and we dont want people at home to think we can just take that and this video, and the president retweeted it and it went viral on monday and theyre making claims that are completely false and also telling people not to wear a mask. Yeah. Of course, the president s son ended up with his twitter account being limited because he had uploaded this video and shared it, but again, we want people wearing masks. In fact, we need a National Mask mandate at this point to control the spread of the virus. The last thing we need amid so much suffering and death is the president and other highranking officials putting forward the work of quacks and not working on the advice of dr. Fauci. Listen to the science. Its what we will focus on. All of you stay there, and there were a lot of outrageous claims made by the president and we want to continue fact checking. Stay with us. Ongoing protests and elsewhere describing them to be anarchists. I know that not to be true because ive spoken to mothers who were in peaceful protests. We all know there have been violent interactions between demonstrators and police. Tell us what the true scene on the ground is there from your perspective. Well, what we just heard from the president , jim, is part of this Ongoing Campaign to mislead the public, i think, and describing what is going on on the ground. The froms and his allies are trying to portray portland as a city under siege. Weve heard it from him, and officials at the top of dhs, the department of Homeland Security and we heard it yesterday from attorney general william barr talking about the an,ists aarch. To be fair there is violence outside this courthouse which has served as the epicenter of the protest, but the Larger Movement is overwhelmingly peaceful and its important to note that distinction. You do have Peaceful Protesters and you do have violent protesters and House Republicans are playing this misleading video showing a mashup of reporters talking about the Peaceful Movement leaving out what we have described about the violence and what we hear from in talking with protesters and people on the ground in portland is that the idea is the president can paint the city as under siege. We know that hes attacked the democratic leadership of the city and that then boosts his law and order message that trying to provide that dichotomy between him and others on the ground. One thing i will note and this was so interesting and i was talking to a federal Law Enforcement source that pointed out that the group of people that actually lose in this situation that are harmed the most are the federal agents inside that courthouse protecting it every night. Some of their actions are under investigation, but in the main, you look at those agents and this one source telling me that the president describes this as under siege that is fueling a lot of the outrage and fueling a lot of the anger from these protesters and the violent protesters who come there night after night. This is an Endless Campaign and the portland mayor said that there have been discussions going on behind the scenes between his office and federal officials. He didnt provide details and he expects an announcement soon and hes getting very personal with the mayor and tries to broad brush the city as in a state of bedlam. Josh, to your important point. You cant have it both ways. The president cant have it both ways. You cant say im a law and order president , reelect me, and i will bring law and order to the streets when on your watch that is not whats happened for 60 straight nights in portland. Not encouraging that theres going to be a deal here in the nearterm, lauren. Secretary mnuchin saying we are very far apart and the president making this claim and i wonder if you can fact check it for us, quote, the democrats arent taking care of people. The payments arent enough and theyre not making it high enough. Correct me if im wrong, but its the democrats who want more in terms of weekly stimulus to people, not less. It is unclear what the program is the president is talking about. We are talking about multiple different provisions and one of the key Sticking Points has been this issue of federal Unemployment Benefits and essentially they run out at the end of the week and some people got their last checks last week and democrats have been fighting to keep the amount of money that individuals receive from the federal government at 600. Republicans in their proposal cut that down to 200 with eventually moving to 70 of what someone made while they were working. Obviously that reveals that the democrats are more supportive of a more robust payment than the republicans are. So it was unclear whether the president was talking about that unemployment benefit in his comments, but that has been a key Sticking Point up here, and you heard the president sort of floating this short term idea. He basically was arguing we can get to other Sticking Points later. Lets deal with that Unemployment Insurance piece by the end of the week except the problem is democrats and republicans as i just explained are very far apart on that issue. It might be one of their top Sticking Points so to pretend that you can gloss over this in a matter of days, poppy, it doesnt speak to the issues and negotiations that are happening every day behind closed doors. Jonathan, in yesterday another day with just a tsunami of news by the minute. I think just to draw attention back to your interview and the remarkable fact that the u. S. Commander in chief admits that he has repeatedly refused to even warn russia away either in 2020 or going back to 2018 from killing u. S. Forces in afghanistan or threatening to do so. I wonder, a consistent message from john bolton and jim mattis and others who serve the president and ive spoken to senior advisers who detail how he does not, will not stand up to russia and often accepts putins view of the world and position on things. Is there anyone that remains in the administration because all of those people are gone. Is there anyone in the administration that presses this president to stand up to russia and challenge putin or are they all gone . Well, you have a fairly hawkish secretary of state in mike pompeo, but i dont see a huge amount of evidence of influence on this matter. In fact, i dont really see any. Obviously, the president has imposed sanctions on russia, but he did so very reluctantly. He actually put out a statement complaining about it in 2017 when congress forced his hand. Every time it has been congress pushing him to take these actions and he hasnt wanted to do it and with afghanistan, he just wants to get out and its that simple and hes incredibly frustrated right now i am told by my sources because what he now is sort of grappling with, he doesnt want to say this publicly, but its true. He roughly has the same number of u. S. Troops in afghanistan that he did when obama took over and trump hates that idea going into reelections. Trump increased the numbers to 14,000 and theyre back down to 8,500 and you will see some pretty rapid and potentially stunning withdrawal from afghanistan between now and november which will have political overtones. Remarkable. Thats a remarkable warning there on the way out, jonathan swan. We will be watching for that closely. Everyone, thanks to all of you. Its been a lot to go over here. Youve all been very patient. We appreciate you joining us and sharing your wisdom this morning. A failure to extend enhanced Unemployment Benefits in the next stimulus package could be devastating for millions of americans, maybe some of you watching especially latino families across this country. Our cnns layla santiago joins us more with the high unemployment numbers. I am so glad youre highlighting this among latino women and how much more economic pain many will be in if nothing gets done quickly. Jim and poppy, ive spent quite a bit of time speaking to latino women and they dont know what they fear more, the virus itself as they have seen many latina women struggle with it or the impact, and the struggle to survive daily life in this economy. Lourdes hasnt paid the rent here for four months. She now owes 12,000 in rent. As a caretaker and a housekeeper in san francisco, she has lost all of her clients at the hands of covid19, and shes not just worried about the virus. She tells us she also worries about ending up on the streets, not having something to eat or a place like this to live. Making matters more difficult for her, lourdes is caring for her 23yearold son that has a brain injury. With so much at stake, she fears losing it all in a state where the economy has taken a substantial hit. The way she sees it, shes a fundamental part of that economy. We make it possible for others to work, she tells us. We take care of the child so that the doctor can go to work. Lourdes is one of more than 1. 8 million Hispanic Women out of work in the United States. The Unemployment Rate for latinas now stands at a staggering 15 partly because latin as are more likely to work in leisure and hospitality services. Weve heard from people just like lourdes who told us that they are not able to come back even to some of their oldest clients just because people are really worried about safety. Reporter Jess Morales Rocketto is with the National Domestic Workers Alliance whose members are largely latina. Do you see this Getting Better or worse for latina women . Think its possible it gets worse. Many are working more hours and getting paid less than they ever have. A study examined factors behind covid19 risks for latino communities highlighted housing and frontline jobs like Domestic Workers. The risk for women were different for some because they were at the front line and exposed to the virus very early and for others that had to assume different rules and different risks based on their job experience. Risks that people like lourdes know all too well. Latina women, she says, should not be ignored, rather valued and listened to by the government and the people. She wants both to take into account that it is women like her among the hard hit essential workers that the u. S. Is depending on during the pandemic and for the wellbeing of the countrys economy. And lourdes tells me she really worries about the catchup, when things get back to normal, whenever that may be. She worries that the debt will be too much and she worries about what she will have to pay just to live as she does normally. Now the National Workers the National Domestic Workers Alliance materie alliance tells me they established a Coronavirus Care Fund to give Domestic Workers 400 in assistance and that gives perspective on the need for relief among them. They tell us that they have raised about 30 million and they believe that will be only enough to assist about 5 of Domestic Workers largely latina. Its good that youre looking at that closely. In just a few hours, for the First Time Ever, the ceos of amazon, apple, facebook and google will get together and theyll face critical questions and this is critical for a number of reasons. It is the biggest tech hearing of its kind since 1998, remember when bill gates faced those antitrust questions about microsoft. These companies together account for 5 trillion of the u. S. Economy and this is the First Time Ever that amazon founder and Ceo Jeff Bezos will testify before congress. With me now is amy web, quantitative futurist and the author of a fascinating tech book called the big nine. Its good to have you, amy. Thanks. Thanks, poppy. Good morning. Of course. Lets start with facebook, we know from his opening remarks Mark Zuckerberg will make an America First pitch and hell warn about the threat from china and say facebook is a Successful Company now and we got there with the american way and we started with nothing and we provided better products that people find valuable. Hes going to have to answer a lot of questions about misinformation. He was so adept at handling congress when he testified and the landscape has changed a lot when it comes to the spread of disinformation on facebook. What should they ask him . Thats right. So of the four ceos who are gathering today, Mark Zuckerberg is certainly the veteran and facebook has the most to lose. Facebooks market dominance is tethered very much to Online Advertising and the effectiveness of Online Advertising is tethered to our information and just as zuckerberg testifies this morning there is a new state of covidrelated misinformation rapidly spreading around facebook, you know, which presents a Public Health risk. So my expectation is that while hell try to stick to the script today, the challenge is that facebook is heading into a 2020 election season with few safeguards under control and the american electorate is concerned about whats next. So on amazon, its going to be fascinating. A lot of publications saying, look, the wild card here is jeff bezos because weve literally never seen him answer questions from lawmakers under oath to congress. So its even rare that he does hard pressing interviews, right, amy . And one of the key issues that theyre facing on amazon is what do they do from the data that sell their stuff on amazon. Do they use that to prop up their own products and make more money themselves . I asked the man right below jeff bezos that, jeff wilke and heres what he said. We dont use specific items thats not available to the world just by looking at our website. Does amazon give prioritize its private label in search. We prioritize the things that customers want. What answer do lawmakers need to push for here . Right. So just by virtue of the fact that jeff bezos has never appeared before i expect his portion of the hearing to get the most attention, but heres the issue. I know that congressional leaders want to know what data amazon is collecting, but the bottom line is that amazon. Com is far more is far less than the entire amazon ecosystem. Amazon has nearly surpassed walmart as the Worlds Largest retailer. It also runs aws which is the Cloud Infrastructure that by the way, the federal government relies on. It has a Prescription Drug company in kilpack and operates the Biggest Online streaming system in the world, twitch, plus it is doing the lion share of research in artificial intelligence. The reason that this matters to everyday people is because amazon is the invisible infrastructure along with google and microsoft powering business in everyday life and if you look at the antitrust issues on their own, i dont know that amazon meets those criteria because it is so incredibly diverse. Unlike google, it doesnt have market dominance in just one area. Thats a good point and it brings up the question of, you know, do we need to redefine antitrust at this point, and thats a whole other conversation and you bring up google and antitrust is relevant here because the broad reporting is that theyre expecting to file an antitrust this summer and last june i sat down and asked sundar and heres what he said to see how he might be going into this hearing. Its perfectly fine as Companies Get to a big scale there is scrutiny, and i think its important to make sure that we are also able to create a healthy, competent ecosystem in which other companies are able to emerge. Can you answer for the American People because you will hear lawmakers say its time to break up big tech, right . But they cant just do that . Its a lot more complex than that. Thats right. And the other analogy that you will hear a lot is big tobacco. This is not the same thing as bringing together big tobacco. These are complex, sprawling organizations and they cannot be easily broken up from a technical point of view and i certainly dont know if the legal definitions that we have meet the criteria to even begin that process. Look, we are in a situation where a free market economy eventually squashes competition. Weve seen this all over the place and there are hundreds of Big Pharma Companies in the u. S. There are six and so it is with technology. So i understand the concerns that everybody has especially as it relates to data, but we have to think through the next order of outcomes and implications in our futures. Amy webb, thank you. It is so good to have you and for anyone who hasnt read the big nine its totally fascinating and will bring your minds to all sorts of places so amy, thank you for breaking it down for us. You got it. Several baseball teams face scheduling changes and other big challenges after more than a dozen Miami Marlins players test positive for coronavirus. Can the season go on . Big challenges. Rising cases of coronavirus are now forcing the mlb, Major League Baseball, the pause on the season at least for one team. Andy, do we believe this is just about the marlins or about the major League Protocols and the ramifications here could be much broader than just the marlins. Jim and poppy, right now Major League Baseball is saying this is strictly a marlins problem. Theyre the only team with a number of confirmed coronavirus cases. Four more players testing positive over the weekend according to multiple reports. That now gives the marlins 17 total members of the team to have tested positive for covid19. Major League Baseball announcing it was postponing the teams games through sunday in order for the marlins to focus on providing care for all of those players. Officials say everyone who tested positive is currently in isolation. The teams still there in philadelphia and the marlins ceo derek jeter announced the team has moved to a daily testing schedule now and we continue to take this entire situation very seriously. All of our players, coaches and staff are understandably having a difficult time enduring this experience. The marlins are next scheduled to play on monday against the phillies in miami. Well wait and see if that game ends up taking place. The phillies were the team that miami was playing against when the outbreak hit and Major League Baseball postponing their games until friday just to be safe and since the already shortened schedule was quickly becoming a mess in order to add flexibility down the line. The yankees, who were supposed to play the phillies will now travel to play the orioles. The orioles were supposed to be playing the marlins and those two games will take place today and tomorrow. Major League Baseball, as i said earlier, they said this outbreak problem right now, its strictly a marlins problem and over 6400 tests conducted since friday there have been zero new positive tests from onfield personnel from the other 29 clubs. Nfl Training Camps are now open. The Union Announced that 21 players had tested positive since they started reporting at camp last week. After arriving at Training Camp players must have two negative tests before theyre allowed to enter the training facility. So far, 25 nfl players have exercised their option to opt out of the 2020 season. Packers receiver Devin Funches saying family is first, always has been and always will be. And newly acquired eagles receiver and goodwin and his wife have a daughter and they lost their unborn twins in 2018 so definitely understand why goodwin decided to opt out of this season, but jim and poppy. The next ten days will be very important for the nfl. Once those players start getting on the field together and start working out in close quarters, well have to hopefully hold our breath and no situations like the marlins occur around the nfl. Football is a lot different sport than baseball. You can stop high fiving after a home run in baseball and its tackle football. Its hard to imagine. This will not be flag football.
