Strained, and critical supplies running low once again. In florida, a staggering 15,000 cases reported on sunday alone, and florida just one of 35 states now seeing a spike in infections. It is time that our nation get the facts and just the facts. They need them now more than ever. So why is the president accusing the cdc, the agency Many Americans rely on for guidance of lying about the virus . The cdc is part of his own administration and by the way the president appoints the director of the cdc. What about dr. Fauci . A key voice in the task force the white house tapped . He and the president not speaking. The question today, why . Were covering all of it this morning. Lets get to rosa flores, she joins us in miami with the latest numbers out of florida, breaking a new record in terms of new cases . Reporter you know, poppy, its not getting any better. Florida shattering its daily record of coronavirus cases with more than 15,000 cases just yesterday. Here in Miamidade County, this is the epicenter of the crisis in this state. It accounts for 24 of the states nearly 270,000 cases. If you look at all the metrics, theyre not going in the right direction. Its not getting any better. When you look at the 14day average positivity rate, its at 26 . The goal for Miamidade County is not to exceed 10 . The county exceeded 22 for the past 14 days. During that same time period, hospitalizations are up 65 . Icu units 67 , and ventilators 129 . This of course very concerning to local leaders here including city of miami mayor francis suarez. Take a listen. So its inevitable that were going to see deaths rising in the state, and you know, were going to, were hoping to see things improve over the next couple of weeks, because we are reaching a critical level. Reporter despite all of these metrics, despite the fact these numbers keep surging, the state of florida still requiring schools to reopen next month for inperson instruction. Poppy, you and i have been updating our viewers regarding schools and i want to leave you with this quote from the Orange CountyClassroom Teachers association, because its very telling. They wrote on their Facebook Page in the past 24 hours wha kind of alternative universe are we living in when teachers are spending the last days of their Summer Vacation writing wills the Teachers Union helping refer them to attorneys. Remarkable. Rosa flores in florida, thanks very much. To georgia, another state where new cases are surging and hospitals now are finding beds running short. This has prompted the governor to reactivate a makeshift hospital in downtown atlanta. Cnns Dianne Gallagher has more. This is the concern here. You see cases rise soon after the science shows us you see hospitalizations rise as people get sicker. Tell us about the numbers were seeing in georgia. Jim, this hospital makeshift hospital the Georgia World Congress center originally opened back in april. It shut down about a month later. The governor determined on friday they needed to reactivate it due to the high number of hospitalizations, and Record Number of new cases. Nearly 4,500 on friday alone in georgia. Georgia also experiencing a Record Number of deaths last week, as the numbers just continue to go up. If you remember, the state of georgia was one of the first to open up early, way ahead of many others to the point that President Trump at one point said that he didnt agree with how quickly it was happening in the state of georgia. Since then, weve seen the numbers slide in the wrong direction especially in the past recent weeks. Now here in atlanta, the governor enacted a mask mandate. The governor said, sorry, the mayor enacted a mask mandate. The governor said thats not enforceable even as he flies around the state saying people should wear masks. Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms pushed us back to stage one. The governor again said thats something he doesnt really understand why she would need to do that. The mayor said she hasnt really gotten much guidance from the governor. Dianne, thank you. In the crosshairs is the schools, the teachers and parents and children and whats going to happen. Jim, come a few weeks in some states these schools are going to open maybe. Not arizona, where several mayors are urging the governor there to expand statewide restrictions to help try to control the spike of covid cases theyve seen there, and evan mcmorrissantoro reports from phoenix and the mayor says the city has been plagued by recordsetting ventilator usage. How are they coping . Well, poppy, the real story in arizona is one of the medical system really being plagued by shortages. When you look at the numbers in arizona overall, it looks smaller in texas or florida because its a smaller state but there are two important figures you need to keep track of in arizona. The first one is 89 . Thats the number of icu beds currently excuse me with this mask 89 the number of icu beds currently in use and the second number is 86 , the number of total hospital beds currently in use in arizona. So just the Hospital System under pressure here, and to talk about it, i have the president of the Arizona Medical Association dr. Ross goldberg. Doctor, thanks for talking to me. Can you tell us quickly what is the situation for medical professionals in arizona right now . You kind of talked about the numbers. The system is under a lot of pressure right now because we have so many patients in the hospital. People say you always run at a high number. The difference is a lot of the Covid Patients are here for a long period of time. In the hospital our goal is to take care of someone, get them better and out of the hospital. Here is a longer hospital stay which takes thatsi circulation. People coming in and coming in, adds pressure on the system. Reporter are you running out of things and supplies are getting short . Not yet. In my hospital here the great thing is we track that every day. Theres transparency about what we have and what we dont. Weve been able to get stuff in but again, you want to be really, really cautious and careful about it. Reporter what do you need . Everything and anything we need available. We need testing. We need ppe. We need everything as much as we can, especially as our protocols go up for safety well burn through more ppe. The more stuff we keep on getting in the better off well be. Reporter got it. Poppy and jim, as you mentioned, local officials here are pressing for more statewide regulations involving trying to bring this curve, the curve down on this pandemic here. For example, masks which im struggling with this morning, masks are not required statewide. Some places you have to wear them, some places dont. Its things like that, that people who are Public Health officials i spoke to say could be helpful in making some of the numbers here that are so high start to come down. Jim . Folks, its in the science. Every scientist knows it in the day ta. The masks work. Evan mcmorrissantoro, thanks so much. As cases surge around the country, President Trump is accusing members and agencies of his own administration lying about the pandemic as poppy said. Leaders of the president himself appointed. He has retweeted a false claim this morning from a former Game Show Host, chuck woolery, saying the cdc and most doctors have been lying about the virus for the sake of winning the election. The white house is attempting to undermine the reputation of the nations and one of the worlds top Infectious Disease doctors, dr. Anthony fauci. It sent out a list of misleading talking points attacking fauci over the weekend, including comments completely taken out of context or just unfinished statements and frankly, jim, this looks a whole lot like Opposition Research in a Political Campaign but against one of their own. Its a tact tick weve seen before from the white house. We go to john harwood. You look at the talking points and many deliberately taken out of context here to undermine the reputation of dr. Fauci. Can you walk us through, because we dont want to give any more oxygen to these talking points than necessary, but walk us through one example here, where they deliberately cut off the second half of a statement that fauci made about the outbreak early on. Jim, this was part of the Opposition Research that the administration sent out about anthony fauci, and it alludes to a february 29th interview that he gave to nbcs today show in which he said at that point, there was no reason for americans to change their routines. Take a listen. No, right now, at this moment, there is no need to change anything that youre doing on a daybyday basis. Right now, the risk is still low, but this could change. Reporter this could change. That is the key point. Anthony fauci went on to say in part of the remarks not shared by the white house this could still become a major pandemic. What you see from anthony fauci, even in those early stages when he was being cautious is an attempt to grapple with the facts, grapple with the science, and adjust as the facts and the science led him to different conclusions. That is not what President Trump has done. President trump has consistently tried to gloss over the facts, as you can see from this set of clips from the president earlier. To that point, john, one of the major differences, there are so many, between dr. Fauci and the president , is what you said, right . As we learn more about this virus, dr. Fauci has quickly and adeptly navigated and said okay, heres what we know and heres how this changes what i may have said a week ago, et cetera. Thats not what the president has done consistently no. What the president has done consistently is to try to downplay in the interests of preserving confidence in the economy, which he thought was his ticket to reelection and the thing that made him feel good about his presidency, try to gloss over the facts, and so youve seen this from the beginning all the way through the springtime. Take a listen. By april, you know, in theory, when it gets a little warmer, miraculously goes away. The coronavirus, which is, you know, very well under control in our country. We have very few people with it. Were going down, not up. Were going substantially down, not up. Again when you have 15 people and the 15 within a couple of days is going to be down to close to zero, thats a pretty good job weve done. Reporter what weve got now is a situation where the facts have turned unambiguously bad, not just in blue states which had a problem early on and have done somewhat better but its now fully engaged the red states in the country that early on the president could try to deny what was going on, because they hadnt had outbreaks. Hes now going to war on the facts. The people delivering the facts, but that is a game that ultimately is not going to work when Peoples Health and when peoples ability to reopen schools and their livelihoods are affected. This is slowing down the economic recovery trump was trying to protect in the first place. Going to war on the facts. John harwood, captures it in this case, no question. Thank you, john. Lets talk about the medical side of all of this. Dr. Kent septowicz is with ust. Just the facts that save lives or end up in more people dying, what is your reaction to the way the white house is going after dr. Fauci, not just the president s comments saying hes a nice guy but gets stuff wrong a lot, the list is like Opposition Research. Its very disappointing. Dr. Fauci is a hero for many of us. Hes kept his integrity from reagans administration on but doctors are used to giving bad news. Its part of what we do. We know we are wrong a lot of the time but we try to correct things as we go, so this is a very stupid strategy i think of the president , but it doesnt change the facts. So those of us in the medical community are bothered by this side show, but the facts are the facts. Were in a crisis, and the president cant talk his way out of this one. Dr. Sepkowitz, the sad fact is at takthe attacks on the fack for a certain portion of the population. People are told and believe it, its not a real threat or masks are an infringement on freedom and dont work and democratic conspiracy, et cetera, it changes behaviors, does it not. Does that attack on the facts weaken the response to the outbreak . Surely, but you know, arguing rationally against people who hold an irrational belief is never going to work. Screaming louder that, for example, seat belts work, stopping smoking works, it doesnt sink in everywhere. So at a certain point, you know, trying to get the last person to agree is not a good strategy. The strategy is to stress masks, testing, social isolation, and just keep hammering it and people are going to do what people do. How much as we talk, doctor, about reopening schools physically or not, how much do we know or do we not know about children and how they spread this disease . We know many of them are asymptomatic. They dont have severe symptoms. Do we know enough about how they spread it . We dont know enough to be a thousand percent sure or 100 sure, but we know about respiratory viruses in kids. We know that they are thus spreaders of influenza. It appears that coronavirus isnt spread as efficiently by kids but of course theyre going to spread it. Theyre kids. Theyve got snotty noses, they crawl over each other, grab stuff and stick it in their mouth. Theres no question but this will happen. It will put teachers at risk. It will put whoever is carpooling that day at risk. Its going to be a disaster. Theres nothing, theres no softening this. Its odd that were pretending that there might be a slight variati variation. Its just so far off the pace for what the problem is. Were nibbling on the edges here. Dr. Sepkowitz, thank you very much for being with us. We appreciate the facts from you this morning. Thank you. Texas is getting hit very hard still by coronavirus. Hospitals nearing capacity there, and more help coming to the state from the military. Do they have what they need at this point to wrestle with this spike . As brazil nears 1. 9 million cases of coronavirus, some of the hardest hit in that country are indigenous tribes. Well have reporting on that ahead. Plus as the debate over sending kids back to the school in the fall intensifies, teachers are speaking out. One says i love my students but i dont want to be next. Stay with us as we discuss. [narrator] the shark vacmop combines powerful suction with spray mopping to lock away debris and absorb wet messes, all in one disposable pad. Just vacuum, spray mop, and toss. The shark vacmop, a complete clean all in one pad. Welcome back. In texas, many hospitals are now nearing capacity and the governor who resisted controls on the outbreak initially admits things will get worse in the coming week. Today more than 500 medical personnel from the department of defense arrive in the state to help with the response to coronavirus. Meanwhile, testing sites in at least one county were forced to close early over the weekend, because of the extreme heat there. Joining me is the mayor of austin, texas, steve adler. Mayor, thank you for taking the time this morning. Jim, good to be with you. So first an update from where you stand, on cnn just over a week ago you issued a dire warning that hospitals in your city would soon be overwhelmed. Where do things stand this morning . Were right on the edge. Two weeks ago i said we needed to do something here locally to change the trajectory we were on or we would be overwhelmed in our icus probably today. What that meant is the community really needed to fully adopt wearing face coverings and doing social distancing. About two and a half, three weeks ago, the community did that. We have, you know, had our trajectory taper off. Weve bought some more time, but if anybodys listening now from austin, now is not the time to take the foot off the break. We are on the edge. We had 17 more people admitted into our icus last night. Thats a 10 increase. So were still in a rough place. Okay. Well the fact is, state leaders in texas did take their foot off the brakes for a number of weeks, resisting stayathome orders, mask mandates, et cetera, and thereby violating the cdc and guidelines for reopening. Do you blame state leaders . Do you hold them responsible for the outbreak that texas is currently seeing . I think the Lesson Learned in texas is you cannot open up the economy in ways that looked like the economy was opened before. So yes, i do believe that the failure at the statewide level to have a mandate on masking, reopen up the economy is one of the chief reasons where we are today. The governor was better than many governors around the country. He was encouraging people to use masking. He would even be photographed wearing masks, but theres a difference between saying that and actually making it mandatory. It conveys an entirely different message, and a message coming out of washington, it is harmful, and its dangerous and causing problems right now across the country. There needs to be a very clear message that masks are mandatory and have to be worn. The fact is, youre getting even worse disinformation from washington. Today you have the president retweeting a former Game Show Host claiming that the cdc is lying about cases of this disease. Do you find in your community that people buy that and therefore do not act to control the spread of the virus . Take simple measures like wearing a mask . Fortunately most people in austin dont buy that, but the bad part is still a material and significant number of people do, and it just shouldnt be something thats debated. If you look at the states right now that are doing well, theyre the states where people are wearing masks. Even in austin, if you look at the stra jectry that we were on to make mask wearing immediate, that is the lesson to be learned. Those conflicting messaging even if its not being bought by most people if theres a significant number of people that do it works against the entire community and puts Peoples Health, puts peoples lives at risk. Final question. Hearing reports in corpus christi, Health Care Workers are being told they can only use one n95 mask per day, an indicator of a shortage once again of key ppe, personal protective equipment. Quickly, do you see any similar shortages where you are . Not quite where we are yet but were beginning to hear the stories and frankly, what happens around the state impacts us. Were contacted by hospitals in the valley asking us if we have space in our icus for their patients, and we have been calculating our need based on our need and now we realize that its going to be coming from all over the state. This needs a statewide and a National Wide response. Folks, ive been saying it for a long time and hasnt come, that National Response and plan. Mayor steve adler, thanks very much. Thank you, jim. Be safe. Some of the hardesthit communities in brazil, where they are just getting slammed by covid19 may be the least equipped to handle this pandemic. So right now in brazil, police there in rio are apparently ticketing people for not wearing face masks on the famous beaches there. The country is approaching 2 million covid cases and that number includes brazils president , who is in somewhat of a semiisolation, after testing positive for the virus last week. U. S. President trump repeatedly downplayed the threat of the virus and the Science Behind it. Bill weir is live in brazil. The virus is taxing Health Care Systems across brazil, and at the same time of course you have a Disinformation Campaign coming from the highest levels there. How are officials there, people there balancing that . Reporter well, its interesting, jim. Theres a real tugofwar between governors, mayors and the federal government. Very reminiscent of whats happening in the united states. We talk about protecting the most vulnerable populations. Hard to imagine a more vulnerable population than the original brazilians, increasingly squeezed by the modern world, fighting this modern disease but they have enough knowledge of this world to have real resentment for the man in charge. A long lens found brazils most famous covid19 patient up and about this weekend and this twitter selfie was part of a post that informed the nation they are on the verge of recession as he calls for families to depoliticize the pandemic after so much misinformation was used as a weapon. To his critics, that is outrageous, since president bolsonaro defied a judges orders to wear a mask in public. And pushed out two Health Ministers who disagreed with him. While he now has a team of doctors and his own palace icu at the ready, hospitals across his country are jammed. Here in the Geographic Center of brazil, a husband and wife suffer in adjoining beds. Be better. Reporter oh, my gosh. And not respond to chloroquine. Reporter chloroquine is among the cheap abundant antimalarial drugs pushed by bolsonaro as a covid cure, along with vitamins, steroids, and medication for parasitic worms. The doctor has tried them all with wildly mixed results. I dont know what to do, what i do. Water. Reporter yes, water. Yes. Reporter youre trying everything you can. Yes, yes. Its a new disease. Its a new pandemic. So we dont have things to do. Reporter right. He says its even more challenging treating the Indigenous Brazilians who once had this edge of the amazon to themselves but are now surrounded by farms and ranches. A soybean trucker first brought covid19 to this region, and it is tearing through a community, already struggling with vulnerable immune systems, diabetes, and a deep mistrust of the outside world. I would like Jair Bolsonaro to stop talking stupid nonsense chryst chrystian araujo tells me. The doctors have to prescribe, not the president. His government did not take prevention seriously. It did mott prepare. The indigenous leader was on a ventilator when his mother died of covid19. We have a very strong spirituality, so she was there and took my hand and told me that ill get out of this, to take care of my people. Five days later, my father died. As the pandemic spread, Brazils Congress passed a bill that would provide clean water, disinfectant and hospital beds for this countrys 850,000 indigenous natives. Last week those efforts were vetoed by Jair Bolsonaro. Theres a chance congress could override that veto. In the meantime the mayor here is pleading with them to set up a Field Hospital for the indigenous, so they can at least come together and its so heartbreaking you realize a lot of the folks dont come to the hospital because they dont want to die in a place where they dont know anyone or even the language. Jim and poppy . Important reporting, bill, were glad youre there. Thanks a lot. Arkansas is the latest state to push back the start of school there. In atlanta leaders vote on a plan to start digital only for the first nine weeks of school. And in arizona, state hit hard now, were learning a teacher there she is, died of coronavirus. Kimberly byrd and two other teachers contracted the virus while working in a classroom together this summer. All of this as the education secretary betsy devos refuses to say whether or not schools should follow cdc guidelines, talking about them as recommendations, but not mandates, and the president threatens to pull funding from schools that do not physically reopen. With us now, two teachers alana rabinowtiz teacher of esl in new york and its very nice to have you both. Obviously were thankful youre here but thanks for teaching our kids each and every day and your dedication to the field. Alana, let me begin with you. You wrote specifically about this and i think everyone can agree they want kids in school for sure, but they dont want anyone contracting covid or anyone dying as we saw with that teacher in arizona. What would you need to see to feel safe going to school . Right now, im not seeing all the things that i do need to see. I like to see an action plan and a contingency plan on what would happen if children got sick or teachers got sick. Id like to know there was an ample supply for once of masks, sanitizer, hand sanitizer, proper equipment, but id also like it to be in a situation where i wouldnt have to go inside. Im not really comfortable right now. New york city itself just barely passed phase two. So if there is a way to do it we were able to set up tents outside, close off streets, if there was a way for to us go back, where we felt safe, then i think that we could Work Together to figure out a solution on how to make the kids feel safer as well. Mercedes, you Teach High School english in louisiana. Were in a bizarre situation here, where we have the data about health and School Reopening coming from actual scientists and agencies such as the cdc and then we have disinformation, much of it coming from the president , contradicts the science. I just wonder where you are, what is guiding the decisionmaking there . Is it the science, the facts, what we know about this virus at this point, or is it Something Else . Jim, thank you for having me. No, i feel very much like all of American Education is an experiment right now, but not even a scientific experiment. It is a political roll of the dice for us, and we are the dice, the teachers in the classrooms. If it were not, if there were not the issue and i wrote about this, it was carried in the washington post, if there were not the issue of well parents need to go to work, then there would not be this great pressure coming on us to open schools. If that were not the case, and what i added was, you know, if i am sick, if i am quarantined, and my class is quarantined, on and on, and if we must do blended learning, which i dont see how there can be anything, any best Case Scenario right now for most districts other than a blended situation, were not going to be able to have school, and so the idea that its going to be business as usual, where your child comes to school for seven or eighthour school day and maybe some kind of auxiliary care and that you can rely on that as a parent, that is just not realistic. Alana . Yes. Online learn something reain tough. I went through it with a 4yearold this year, and its not easy and i had the ability to be around in the afternoon to help. What the data show is that from education, one in five students were essentially not participating in the Online Program in march and beyond when schools closed this past year and the number higher of those not participating in lowincome communities, and then you look at the data out of the National Center for Education Statistics that 14 of schoolaged children dont have access to wifi or broadband, so they cant participate. If school doesnt reopen, where does that leave those children . What are some Creative Solutions to make sure every child gets online instruction . Im glad you mentioned that, because i think the key is the last part of what you said, Creative Solutions, and while were in such a rush to go back and start the economy, what were forgetting is the chances are a great amount of time is going to be spent in Digital Learning and we should be focusing our resources on coming one Creative Solutions. I think that we need to include the teachers, give them a seat at the table and give us a chance to help come one some Creative Solutions. For example, we need areas where kids, if their homes dont have it available, where they can go for better wifi. What kinds of programs can we come up with that havent been created already . Ive heard of things where kids go to school and the teachers are home or if there are different kinds of programs that we can come up with, then i think if we had a consortium of teachers, if we were involved in this process, we are creative, we are problem solvers, we can come up with Better Solutions than are going on right now, especially, my heart goes out to the low income communities, that is the community that i serve, and i dont want to see them suffer any more than they have to. Listen, i hope folks are listening to your voices as these decisions are made, because of course you know what youre talking about in terms of how education is done. Alana rabinowitz, mercedes schneider, wish you luck in the coming days and months. Thank you, everyone. A few names in sports are as controversial as that of washingtons football team. Chicago police will be speaking in the next hour after another violent weekend in that city. Authorities say that at least 60 people were shot, 8 of them killed. Our ryan young joins us from chicago. This follows what weve seen over the last few weeks including children being shot and killed. What are police saying about this past weekend . Reporter yeah. That really is the tough part here. Can you see several members of the community upset about the young lives that are being lost. Youre talking about 63 shooting victims over the weekend. Of course, eight murders and thats on end of last weekend when you think about what happened over fourth of july where over 70 people were shot. I spent half an hour on the phone with Community Activists who say they are at their wits end right now. They believe the community is also facing several different stressors. Theres not as many jobs out there in the public as there used to be. People are home, but one of the things they are she lighting here is that the community no longer believes in the Police Department so they are not helping them with some of these cases. They are actually not talking to officers, even though they may know the shooters. That comes down to protection that is being provided. So the other part of of this conversation is the Police Department will be talking about some of the efforts they have. They have been out in the community a lot stronger in the last few weeks trying to get that trust is back. Of course, thats been a constant conversation over the last few years. Theres also this belief sometimes across the country that people in these neighborhoods dont care. There were three antiviolence marches this weekend. Of course, that didnt help with these numbers. A deadly weekend here in chicago. Okay. Ryan young, thank you very much for that very sad reporting and important update. The nfl team in the Nations Capital will no longer be known by the name the redskins as they were known for for so long. Yeah. Follows decades of opposition to what the team officially changing its name, announced just in the last hour. Cnns andy scholles joins us now to explain. They announced there will be a change but if im correct they have not announced what it will be changed to. Thats correct, jim. Good morning to you and poppy. They have not announced the new name yet, but the team put out a statement just moments ago saying after reviewing the name and logo of the redskins they are deciding to retire it after using it for the past 87 years. Now the team also saying in that statement that they sent out that dan snyder and coach rivera are working closely to develop a new name and design approach that will enhance the standing of our proud traditionrich franchise and fans and community. You might remember back in 2013 snyder once said, print it all caps, im never changing the name, but after growing pressure from sponsors like fedex and nike, snyder has decided its finally time to make the move. The nick neighboring red tails has been gaining steam, red tails, tuskegee afternoon can american airmen, a movie man of them, a fan made of that mock logo. Became pretty popular as this name.
